Bassist Roger Glover (L) and singer Ian Gillan of Deep Purple perform together onstage.

Have you always wanted to air guitar to “Smoke On The Water” performed live?

Now’s your chance.

Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Deep Purple are midway through a sprawling international tour.

Yes, you read that right.

The group that’s been together since 1968 and featuring original members like vocalist Ian Gillan, bassist Roger Glover and Ian Paice are still giving their all on the road 55 years after their pre-Moon landing formation in London.

However, you have to hurry — the classic rockers only have five North American shows remaining this year and they all take place from Feb. 10 through Feb. 21.

That includes huge concerts at Bensalem, PA’s Parx Casino on Friday, Feb. 10 and New Brunswick, NJ’s State Theatre on Saturday, Feb. 11.

So, if you want to hear “Hush,” “Highway Star,” “Perfect Strangers,” Child In Time” and, of course, “Smoke On The Water” live, here’s everything you need to know before it’s too late.

Deep Purple 2023 tour schedule

A complete calendar featuring all of Deep Purple’s tour dates, venues, show start times and links to buy tickets can be found below.

Deep Purple new music

Being together for 55 years doesn’t mean Deep Purple doesn’t have more to give to the world.

In 2022, the band reached deep into their archives and dug out “ Extras: The Infinite B Sides and Bonus Songs” which is a must for any Purple superfan.

However, what we found most interesting was the band’s latest record of original music, 2021’s bluesy, New Orleans-y “Turning To Crime.”

Featuring epic rock (“7 and 7 Is”) as well as lively party startin’ tunes (“Rockin’ Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu”) and two covers from B.B. King (“Let the Good Times Roll”) and Cream (“White Room”), the album is certainly a departure from the hard rockers’ heavy fare they’re famous for.

Still, for our money, the best track on the record is the Southern-fried rock and roll number “Oh Well.”

We’ve been listening to it on repeat all day.

You can hear the jubilant “Turning To Crime” album in its entirety here .

Classic rockers on tour in 2023

It’s hard to believe the ’60s were over 50 years ago now.

Still, many acts that defined the sound of the groundbreaking musical era are still kicking it and on the road this year.

Here are just five of our favorite acts that have been rocking out since Nixon was in office that you can see live in the next few months.

•  Ringo Starr

•  Dead and Company featuring John Mayer

•  Tom Jones

•  Graham Nash

•  Santana

Deep Purple are an English rock band, formed in Hertford, Hertfordshire in 1968, and active since their reformation in 1984.

Over the course of a career that’s lasted almost forty years - and that’s not allowing for an eight-year break after an initial split in 1976 - Deep Purple have cemented their position as one of the most influential rock and roll bands in the history of the genre. Furthermore, they’re considered genuine pioneers of both hard rock and heavy metal after having moved away from initial roots in progressive rock, and have the commercial clout to back up their towering status within the rock community; they’ve sold in excess of one hundred million albums internationally. The current lineup features just one original member, Ian Paice on drums, although frontman Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover both joined the band shortly after they began, in 1969. Steve Morse, on guitar, and Don Airey on keys round out the five-piece as they stand today, and they continue to tour and record; their latest album, “Now What?!”, was released in April of 2013, and flirted with progressive metal.

That album might not have been as successful as the records that defined them back in their seventies heyday - March 1972’s “Machine Head”, which features their signature song “Smoke on the Water”, frequently features on countdowns of the greatest rock records ever - but they still pack out arenas the world over; their status as bona fide rock legends has long since been secure.

Live reviews

Perhaps it’s because their one and only split, in 1984, seems so long ago now, or perhaps because they lacked an iconic character of Ozzy Osbourne or Jimmy Page’s standing, but Deep Purple are the one member of the ‘unholy trinity,’ alongside Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, who seem to have the lowest public profile. Sure, they still tour arenas, but Sabbath have been playing stadiums this summer, and as for Zeppelin, the number of applications for tickets for their one-off reunion at the O2 stretched into seven figures. Quietly, though - as unsuitable a phrasing as that is - the biggest band ever to come out of Hertford are continuing to do quite nicely for themselves. Their most recent UK jaunt had them mixing things up, playing some arenas and some theatres, and doing their best to avoid accusations that they’re trading off of former glories; of the seventeen tracks making the setlist each night, seven were plucked from last year’s 'Now What?!' record. The classics made the cut, too, of course, as did all the trappings of the classic rock show - extensive soloing and plentiful crowd participation included. Stadium tours any time soon? Probably not, but if we’re talking about the preservation of their legacy, Deep Purple are certainly doing it justice.

Wonderfull concert by Amsterdam Ziggo Dome last Night of 2 june 2017.

Whole members of Deep Purple are playing very well ! Roger Clover, Don Airy, Steve Morse , Ian Paice and off course Ian Gillian himself . I was dissopointed not playing "Child in Time" . Everybody was expected this song. I was very happy to see this guys.

One of my favorite leadguitar Ritchie Blackmore was not present. Well Deep Purple , thank you all , to coming to Holland.

I was proud to see you again and my evening was best performance!

Thank you Deep Purple keep at going.

Greetings from Horn ( little village in Netherlands)

Deep Purple exploded onto the stage at the Fox Theater in Detroit with their opening song,"Highway Star!" From then on they gave a blistering and thunderous performance!

The visual effects and lighting were spectacular! Their stage presence was commanding and presentation very tight and spot on!

I have seen Deep Purple multiple times over the years. I must say this show found them in their finest form!

The crowd was ravenous to eat up every note! Detroit is the best place in the world for a concert!

This tour is title,"The Long Goodbye."

I sincerely hope this isn't so. Hopefully in the future they will tour as,"Hello Again!"

It was my first time seeing Deep Purple and they did not disappoint. The band was extremely tight and witnessing Steve Morse shred the guitar was worth the price of admission alone. They ripped through two hours of classics including a couple of new tunes off their latest album which was just as strong. Don't miss what may be one of your last chances to see these guys in such strong form. At my show in South Florida, Nicko McBrain from Iron Maiden came out to see the band and introduced them. Their influence can be heard throughout the Rock world and they should be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Besides being a fan of Deep Purple I have to criticize the show. Sorry! Mainly the sound technician did a bad work. Sound was way too loud that it was overlapping. Sometimes it was difficult to recognize the song and hear a melody. Members of the band, the musicians, worked hard and well, unfortunately, Ian Gillan has to retire. It was hard to hear him singing, he often was disappearing from stage. That, to say, in my opinion, he used to be "the Nail" of the shows with his high notes.

I was expecting more pleasant evening from the band I like.

seen DEEP PURPLE with edgar winter warm up, Alice Cooper warm up (why they did this is ridiculous !Deep Purple on a farewell tour played 7 songs off their latest album? they had an organ solo. Ian Gillian spent half the show going bejind the wall probably to get high. no encore song. Alice Cooper should have played the whole 3 hours because he was the best. always a good show. Edgar winter smoked Deep Purple. they need Ritchie blackmore back and david coverdale. Glover and pace the only stars. deep purple needs to retire for good.

Smashing gig!

Suppirt act Cats In Space were a great surprise with their pop rock style that was heavier than expected.

Europe were really good. Joey Tempest was his usual 80s flamboyant self, and the sound was cracking!

Depp Purple were superb. This line-up is tight and settled, with some excellent playing in the original Purple vein. Ian Gillan looked like he'd just wandered in off his sofa, he was so chilled.

All in all, a superb gig that crossed a massive item off my own bucket list

Well it was 47 years since I first saw them and 32 years since I sat in a bin bag in a field at Knebworth. They blew me and my son-in-law away last night.

The new albums songs from Infinite were fantastic especially The Surprising and Birds of Prey interspersed with some old favourites such as Fireball, Perfect Strangers and Smoke on the Water.

Bit disappointed no Highway Star.

As much as I loved it I think it's time to call it quits for playing live - go out on a high with your new album.

I didn't know what to expect. I have seen many bands the last few years, but I had forgotten what good musicians sound like. I remember now after seeing Deep Purple last night. What a fantastic display of musicianship by each member. At some point each of them wee featured and that's why we go! Performers who really love to perform. You don't get that much anymore. And the songs.......well they were awesome as well. I recommend highly if you get the opportunity.

What an incredible show. Starlight Theatre in Kansas City is a beautiful venue and it was a beautiful night. Judas Priest played before Deep Purple and blew the (non-existent) roof off the place. Their experience and chops were on full display. Deep Purple headlined and played lots of the crowd favorites. They may be old and the lineups may have changed, but if you grew up listening to this stuff, don't miss out on seeing them now.

GLENN HUGHES Announces Early 2024 'Classic Deep Purple Live' USA Tour

Glenn Hughes , the former bassist, and singer of DEEP PURPLE , known to millions as the "Voice Of Rock", Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductee, and the frontman for rock super group BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION , has announced that he will be performing DEEP PURPLE -only material with his "Glenn Hughes Performs Classic Deep Purple Live" nationwide USA tour beginning in February 2024. Support on the trek will come from ENUFF Z'NUFF and BAD MARRIAGE .

The tour promises to be a dynamic, turn-back-the-clocks, two-hour live extravaganza homage to his tenure in MKIII and MKIV incarnations of DEEP PURPLE — one of music history’s most seminal and influential rock and roll groups.

Glenn comments: "2024 will be the year that I concentrate on North America and I'm announcing my headline tour for February. Let's turn up the [heat] on this winter run. Can't wait to be with you".

Tour dates:

Feb. 02 - Whisky A Go Go - W. Hollywood, CA Feb. 03 - Coach House - San Juan Capistrano, CA Feb. 05 - Wild Goose - Denver, CO Feb. 07 - Widley Theater - Edwardsville, IL (On Sale Soon) Feb. 09 - Token Lounge - Westland, MI Feb. 10 - Arcada Theater - St. Charles, IL Feb. 13 - Hobart Art Theater - Hobart, IN Feb. 14 - Blue Note - Harrison, OH Feb. 16 - Tupelo Music Hall - Derry, NH Feb. 17 - Penns Peak - Jim Thorpe, PA Feb. 19 - Sellersville Theater - Sellersville, PA Feb. 21 - Victory North - Savannah, GA Feb. 23 - Culture Room - W. Palm Beach, FL Feb. 24 - Occ Roadhouse - Clearwater, FL Feb. 27 - The Ranch - Ft. Myers, FL Mar. 02 - Mar. 07 - Monsters Of Rock Cruise - Miami, FL Apr. 05 - Apr. 10 - On The Blue Cruise - Miami, FL

Glenn kicked off his summer 2023 U.S. tour on August 16 at The Landis in Vineland, New Jersey. Two days later, he teamed up with legendary Swedish guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen for a U.S. co-headlining run. On that tour, Glenn performed DEEP PURPLE 's legendary rock album "Burn" and also played DEEP PURPLE MKIII and MKIV songs.

Glenn 's band features Søren Andersen (guitar), Ash Sheehan (drums) and Bob Fridzema (keyboards).

Hughes spent key years of his career as the beloved bassist and vocalist of DEEP PURPLE , appearing on the classic albums "Burn" , "Stormbringer" and "Come Taste the Band" . More recently, he played various hits and deep cuts from the DEEP PURPLE catalog, including "Burn" , "Stormbringer" , "Sail Away" and "Smoke On The Water" , as part of his "Glenn Hughes Performs Classic Deep Purple Live" tour, which was launched in 2017.

In late 2020, Hughes told Eonmusic that DEEP PURPLE 's 2016 induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame , where he was honored along with other former and current members of the band, "was a little difficult, because of, let's call it personality problems. It was David [ Coverdale , former DEEP PURPLE singer] and I holding hands, and the other guys, unfortunately," he said. "We just don't get along with the other guys at all. So, we kept ourselves to ourselves — David and Glenn , with our wives — and it was great. David and I, what a great time. And we closed the show with CHEAP TRICK and Sheryl Crow , and our friends in CHICAGO .

"You know, it's a touchy subject," he continued. "It was not an easy night for us. If you look at the body language, it's pretty obvious. But again, David and I have been thick and thin for so long; I just dearly love him. Regarding DEEP PURPLE , I have no idea what they're doing, and I don't really care."

Hughes 's comments came less than two months after David expressed his exasperation at PURPLE over how he and Glenn were treated by their former band ahead of the Rock Hall induction. The singer, who played with DEEP PURPLE along with Hughes from 1973 to 1976, said: " Glenn Hughes and I were told, 'Well, we don't want you singing with us.' Initially, I'd spoken to Ian [ Gillan ] about coming up and singing the backgrounds of 'Smoke On The Water' , because originally they were going to close the show. So, that suddenly was pulled. They tried to stop us doing speeches, and my wife was fucking furious, apart from the fact she spent a fortune on posh dresses. [ Laughs ]"

DEEP PURPLE 's first three lineups were inducted into the Rock Hall , including guitarist Ritchie Blackmore , drummer Ian Paice , keyboardist Jon Lord , and various singers and bassists — Rod Evans , Gillan , Roger Glover , Coverdale and Hughes .

DEEP PURPLE 's acceptance speeches included turns from Gillan , Glover , Paice , Coverdale and Hughes before the then-lineup of DEEP PURPLE — Gillan , Glover , Paice , guitarist Steve Morse and keyboardist Don Airey — took the stage and played a short set consisting of "Highway Star" , "Green Onions" (with an image of Lord behind them), "Hush" and "Smoke On The Water" .

DEEP PURPLE LIVE REVIEW

Deep Purple | February 20, 2023 | Mahaffey Theater, St. Petersburg, FL

Formed in 1968, Deep Purple have long been considered among the forefathers of the heavy metal that I have grown up with and come to love, including its evolution to today’s modern metal. They put on one hell of a performance before my eyes and a very nearly sold out crowd in St. Petersburg, FL. This was my first time seeing either Deep Purple or their opening act, The Marshall Tucker Band and with a combined one hundred and six years of musical history between the two bands, I knew going into the show that this was going to be a night of music to my ears. Entering their seventh decade in the rock world, you can imagine the band has gone through some lineup changes over the years, with their longest tenured lineup of twenty years changing last year when Steve Morse retired and Simon McBride took the reins as lead axe man. It is easy to say that some of the previous members include some definitive royalty across the rock & roll family tree, boasting the likes of Ritchie Blackmore, David Coverdale, Glenn Hughes, Joe Lynn Turner and Joe Satriani. “Deep Purple, together with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, have been referred to as the “unholy trinity of British hard rock and heavy metal in the early to mid-seventies”. They were listed in the 1975 Guinness Book of World Records as “the globe’s loudest band” for a 1972 concert at London’s Rainbow Theatre and have sold over 100 million albums worldwide.”

Once my friend Joe and I arrived at the venue and breezed through security, as I do with every show I attend I took in the demographics of the crowd and as expected it was more of an older audience. I did notice a few younger faces in the crowd. Honestly, I was expecting at least a few more younger attendees as Deep Purple has a couple of songs included in the Rock Band video game series, which usually helps to broaden the audience to a younger generation. The best way I can describe the crowd gathered for the show was I do not think anyone got carded buying brinks at the bar this evening.

Reading up on the opening act, I learned that “The “Marshall Tucker” in the band’s name does not refer to a band member, but rather a blind piano tuner from Columbia, South Carolina. While the band was discussing possible band names one evening in an old warehouse they had rented for rehearsal space, someone noticed that the warehouse’s door key had the name “Marshall Tucker” inscribed on it, and suggested they call themselves “The Marshall Tucker Band,” not realizing it referred to an actual person. Later it came to light that Marshall Tucker, the blind piano tuner, had tuned a piano in that rented space before the band and his name was inscribed on the key. Music historian Joel Whitburn erroneously attributes “Marshall Tucker” to the owner of the band’s rehearsal hall in his book Top Pop Singles, 1955-2002. Marshall Tucker died on January 20, 2023, at the age of 99.”

I surprised myself by recognizing more music from The Marshall Tucker Band than I expected. I knew they would play several radio staples that I have heard over the decades, but I always find myself amazed when I say to myself “I did not know they played this song!” Their hit “Can’t You See” was and remains a song that if I come across while flipping the radio dial I always stop on and listen to until its conclusion but to see and hear this classic song live was the special moment for me in their set. Combined with a triple lead guitar attack, founding member and lead vocalist Doug Gray led us through a musical journey that the crowd did not want to end. Gray said just prior to their last song of the evening that their band was “…here to get you loosened up — music is supposed to make you feel good…” before receiving a standing ovation at the end of their set. The night was already off to a great start.

As the lights went out the crowd gave an enthusiastic cheer for the main event and the band launched into their opening song “Highway Star.” Within the first few notes, fans were up and out of their seats walking down memory lane with cherished tunes from their (and my) younger days. After my three songs behind the lens and checking my camera with the venue staff, I made my way to my seat during ‘Nothing at All’ and settled in to sit back and enjoy this musical journey. Watching the crowd rock out I had a thought that made me laugh to myself a couple of different times. After the show, I shared with Joe how those in attendance this evening, and every night along the tour, that these were the ‘metalheads’ of yesteryear, how these were the rebellious kids who cranked up their music and had their parents say “turn down that darn rock music!!!” It just made me laugh how this comes full circle to every generation and here were the pioneers that paved the way and influenced my generation. True to form, there was no way to share this tidbit with Joe during the songs as the volume was definitely cranked up to TEN!

I love how it was such a simple stage layout, no gimmicks or anything, just a drum set and plenty of room for guitarist Simon McBride and bassist Roger Glover to roam. Lead singer Ian Gillan was masterful throughout the entire set in his facial expressions as he belted out these legendary tunes and showed us fans his full emotion he puts into his vocal delivery. There was a video display behind drummer (and the only remaining original member) Ian Paice and keyboardist Don Airey that displayed psychedelic images and swirls that mesmerized my mind in tune with the tunes being played and literally pulled me in as part of the show.

As the set list progressed through the night, Ian certainly welcomed the fans to sing along, but in no way needed us to carry the tunes as he still has an amazing vocal range. In fact, for his intro to ‘Space Truckin’’ he held the “e” in “Space” for so long, even I was gasping for breath waiting for that note to conclude – we in the crowd recognized and roared our approval as the band tore into one of their most recognizable hits. Once the famous intro riff to “Smoke on the Water” hit our ears there was not a single person still seated that I could tell from my vantage point. Again that funny thought of “turn that rock music down” brought a smile to my lips as there were many horns raised and fists were in the air throughout the entire crowd. Their setlist covered six of their twenty two studio albums and featured an extended keyboard solo leading into ‘Lazy’ which was part of my mesmerized journey mentioned previously.

My friend Sima who also attended the show said afterward “…guitarist Simon McBride played Ritchie Blackmore’s parts to a T, adding his own flair and modern sound which may have some Richie Blackmore fans’ heads spinning.” Sima also added …” we could not stop talking about how amazing the legendary Don Airey was on keyboards. That is the same guy that brought us the intro to Mr. Crowley and the masterpiece that is Revelation (Mother Earth) off of (Ozzy Osbourne’s solo debut release) Blizzard of Oz…”. I would say that I am 100 percent in agreement with both of Sima’s statements as there was more than once when I was fixated on Don Airey working his magic over the keys and we had incredible views on the video screen above and behind the band of his hands dancing over those keys. Which in turn brought many people up and out of their seats and dancing to the rhythm. When a band has that long of a musical history to pull from, it was apparent that every song played was someone’s favorite.

One funny thing to note after the show concluded, I saw two couples who met up in the lobby after the show and one of the men pulled out his earplugs, not realizing they were still in. Upon seeing his hearing protection, one of the women said something like “I sure could have used those in there!” and as I can attest, I was glad to have brought mine. The sound crew need props for how great the quality was for both bands. That is one of my favorite reasons for this venue as the acoustics are out of this world awesome every show I have ever seen here.

I saw nothing but smiling faces as we were leaving the venue. The consensus between myself and Joe on the drive home and after conversing with Sima the next day was that it was a phenomenal show and how I should not have waited all this time to finally see these living legends live. While this was the next to last American show on this tour and the band heads overseas with international dates starting in March, I highly recommend to anyone who has not seen these legends live to see them before at some point inevitably concluding their touring career. However, after the raw energy I witnessed at the show I attended, I think that touring conclusion is a long way off as Deep Purple absolutely kicked-ass live! \m/

18 rock bands named after songs by other bands, including deep purple:, judas priest.

British heavy metal legends Judas Priest took inspiration for their brilliant name from the Bob Dylan song 'The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest' from his 1967 album 'John Wesley Harding.' The moniker was the idea of early Judas Priest bassist Brian 'Bruno' Stapenhill who exited the band in 1970 before they had laid down any recordings.

Deep Purple

Initially called Roundabout, the rock legends initially toyed with band names including Orpheus, Concrete God and Sugarlump but eventually settled on Deep Purple; taken from the 1933 Peter DeRose piano composition. The song was a huge favourite of Ritchie Blackmore's grandmother and she would often perform it on piano throughout Ritchie's childhood.

In 1988, Eric Martin, Billy Sheehan, Paul Gilbert and the late-great Pat Torpey named their new band after the Free song 'Mr. Big', which appeared on their breakthrough 1970 album 'Fire and Water'. Mr. Big later covered 'Mr. Big' on their third studio album 'Bump Ahead' in 1993.

After being dismissed from Hawkwind in 1975 following an arrest for drug possession in Canada, Lemmy started his own self-professed "fast and vicious" band and took the name Motörhead from the final song he had penned for Hawkwind just a few months earlier, 'Motorhead'. Two years later, Motörhead re-recorded 'Motorhead' as the opening track on their eponymous debut album.

Originally called Paris upon their formation in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania in 1983, singer Bret Michaels, guitarist Matt Smith, bassist Bobby Dall and drummer Rikki Rockett wisely ditched their tame sounding band name in favour of 'Poison'; a nod to the 1981 track 'Poison' by glam metallers 'Sinner'.

The Scottish hard rock veterans were called the Shadettes upon their formation in the late 1960s but were unhappy with what they perceived to be a 'lightweight' name. They decided to hit a boozer to discuss a new name when 'The Weight' by The Band started playing through the bar's soundsystem. Upon hearing the opening line "I pulled into Nazareth, was feelin' about half past dead" , bassist Pete Agnew suggested 'Nazareth' and the band agreed. The rest, they say, is history.

Danish rockers Volbeat took their name from the 1997 studio album 'Vol.Beat' by singer Michael Poulsen's previous band, the death metal act Dominus.

The Rolling Stones

Founder and original band leader Brian Jones gave The Rolling Stones their moniker after the 1950 Muddy Waters track 'Rollin' Stone'. The fledgling group played their first show as The Rolling Stones on 12th July 1962, at the famous Marquee Club in London.

The idea of former guitarist, singer and co-founding band member Max Cavalera, the Brazilian metallers called themselves Sepultura, which is the Portuguese word for "grave". Max took inspiration from one of his favourite songs, Motörhead's 'Dancing On Your Grave.'

Founded in Oxford in mid-1980s, Radiohead were originally called On A Friday in reference to their music rehearsal day at Abingdon School. When they signed a six-album deal with EMI in 1991, the imprint implored them to change their name and they ultimately took their band name from the song 'Radio Head' from Talking Heads' 1986 album 'True Stories'.

Washington DC punks Bad Brains named themselves after the Ramones track 'Bad Brain', which appears on their 1978 album 'Road To Ruin'.

Stefani Germanotta's stage name is derived from the Queen classic 'Radio Ga Ga'. Producer Rob Fusari claims to have been the person who coined 'Lady Gaga' in the mid-noughties when they worked together.

At The Drive-In

Influential post-hardcore noisemakers At The Drive-In got their moniker from a line in Poison's 1987 single 'Talk Dirty To Me' – "Cause baby we'll be / At the drive-in / In the old man's ford / Behind the bushes / Till I'm screamin' for more." The name was guitartist Jim Ward's suggestion shortly after the band former in 1993.

Formed in South Africa in 1999 as Saron Gas, the band ditched the name as their US label Wind-up Records noted its similarity to the toxic synthetic organophosphorus compound, sarin gas. Ultimately they settled on Seether after the 1994 Veruca Salt single 'Seether'.

The Sisters of Mercy

When they formed 40 years ago in Leeds, the gothic rockers took their name from the Leonard Cohen track 'Sisters of Mercy' from his seminal 1967 album 'Songs of Leonard Cohen.' The Sisters of Mercy took inspiration from Robert Altman's 1971 movie McCabe & Mrs Miller thats' soundtracked by three Leonard Cohen songs.

Stiff Little Fingers

Previously called Highway Star and The Fast, the Belfast punks eventually decided to call themselves Stiff Little Fingers after the 1977 Vibrators song of the same name.

Wisely abandoning the prospective band name Virgin Killer (a nod to the Scorpions), New Jersey thrash metallers Overkill ultimately honoured their other musical heroes Motörhead by naming themselves after the trio's 1979 album 'Overkill' and the single of the same name.

Panic! at the Disco

Although many people erroneously think that Panic! at the Disco are named after The Smiths' song 'Panic' and its chorus of "burn down the disco", former band leader Brendon Urie has said in multiple interviews that they take their name from a track also called 'Panic' by Californian emo band Name Taken. The song's lyrics read: "Panic at the disco/Sat back and took it so slow/Are you nervous?/Are you shaking?".

THE LONG GOODBYE NORTH AMERICA TOUR

Today, Deep Purple – comprised of Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Ian Paice, Steve Morse and Don Airey – announce The Long Goodbye Tour presented by Live Nation. The tour will include over 25+ dates across North America, kicking off on September 3 in Riverside, CA before concluding in Minneapolis, MN on October 19. See below for the full tour itinerary.

With a body of work spanning seven decades, Deep Purple has helped pioneer and define the hard rock genre whilst progressively moving into new areas to keep their sound fresh and attract new fans to the legions who have remained loyal since the band’s inception.

Known as one of the hardest working bands ever, Purple has released 6 studio albums since 1996 alone and has toured globally since forming in 1968 with little rest. In 2007 (almost 40 years after being formed) the band performed 40 dates in France to an award-winning audience of 150,000 whilst this summer, across the US and Canada, the band partnered with fellow hard rockers ‘Judas Priest’ embarking on a wildly successful 25 city tour!

Purple has stayed true to its musical roots taking from an eclectic mix of styles to create a distinctive sound that defines the band today, but which in turn, has created a legacy that very few bands could ever hope to replicate.  The band has written and produced so many “classic” songs that its audience ranges widely in age and background, something the band has embraced and caters to, with its concert setlists.

There simply aren’t enough superlatives to properly acknowledge the contribution Deep Purple has made to rock music.  Having sold more than 100 million albums and filled global arenas for decades, it’s little wonder respected British radio station Planet Rock named the group the ‘5th Most Influential Band Ever’, whilst VH1 ranked them #22 on its ‘Greatest Artists of Hard Rock’ list. Additionally, Deep Purple was given the ‘Legend Award’ at the 2008 World Music Awards and, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.  These guys truly are ‘rock royalty’

VIP package for the tour will go on presale starting Tuesday, May 7th at 10am local time. The general public onsale begins starting this Friday, May 10 at 10am local time.
