Touring the Mount Baker Highway is an extraordinary day trip packed with breathtaking scenery. Officially, it is both a Washington State Scenic Highway and a National Forest Scenic Byway. Be prepared with a full tank of gas. There are no services such as food, gas, or flushing toilets beyond the town of Glacier at Mile 33, so be sure to bring snacks and plenty of water.

Choose your trails carefully if you have a dog. Dogs on leashes are permitted on most, but not all, trails.

A recreation pass is required. If you don't have the appropriate annual pass , you can purchase a day-use pass at the Glacier Public Service Center, located at Mile 34.

Where to Stop Along the Way

A great road trip combines ever-changing scenery with lots of fun stops where you can get out and explore. You'll find dozens of stopping places along the Mount Baker Highway, both inside and outside the National Forest. Among the many options, these are highly recommended:

Glacier Public Service Center  (mile 34)

Open seasonally, this official Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest station is the place to talk to expert rangers about current trail and road conditions, to get maps and guidebooks, and to purchase recreation passes. And there are bathrooms! This is the last public restroom along the highway with flush toilets, so take advantage of this opportunity. It is also the last place to fill your water bottles.

Nooksack Falls (mile 40)

A short drive off the main highway along Wells Creek Road (a well-maintained dirt road) takes you to the viewing area for this charming misty waterfall.

Picture Lake (mile 55)

For much of the year, this extremely photogenic little lake is as far as you can travel along the Mount Baker Highway. The road circles the lake, as does a flat and accessible half-mile trail. From the trail (or your parking spot) you can enjoy an amazing view of Mt. Shuksan, made all the more lovely reflected in the still lake.

Heather Meadows Visitor Center Area (mile 56)

While the visitor center is charming and historic, it's the surrounding scenery, including Table Mountain and Bagley Lakes, that make this stop a must-see. You can explore the area on the easy Fire & Ice Trail, the moderate Bagley Lakes Trail, or the more ambitious Chain Lakes loop.

Artist Point (mile 58)

After you've wound your way up Mount Baker Highway, all the gorgeous mountain scenery comes to an extraordinary climax at Artist Point. A short hike takes you to grand views of Mount Baker itself, the volcanic peak to the southwest of Artist Point. You don't even have to leave the parking lot to take in the breathtaking sight of Mt. Shuksan and the North Cascade Range. Hiking trails, including the short Artist Ridge trail, allow you to savor the views in all directions.

Recommended Day Hikes Along the Mount Baker Highway

One of the things that makes a Mount Baker Highway day trip so enjoyable is that's it's easy to break up the "road" part with time on nature trails or short day hikes. Maps and details for these hikes and more can be found at Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest  website . Don't forget to ask about current trail conditions at the Glacier Public Service Center.

Short and Easy Day Hikes Even if you are more of a walker than a hiker, there are some picturesque places to get out and stretch your legs. Be sure and take your camera

• Picture Lake (1/2 mile loop)
• Fire & Ice (1/2 mile loop)
• Artist Ridge (1 mile)
• Boyd Creek (1/4 mile)

More Challenging Day Hikes Be sure and plan extra time for these challenging hikes. While the distances don't seem long, for the average hiker, the terrain may slow you down. And then, of course, there are the stop-worthy views. 

• Chain Lakes (6.5-mile loop)
• Heliotrope Ridge (5.5 miles round trip)
• Skyline Divide (9 miles round trip)

Food and Drink Along the Mount Baker Highway

There's some great food and drink to be had along State Highway 542. The bad news is that it's concentrated along the first half of the route. The good news: You'll get to take advantage of it each way, fueling yourself early in the journey and satisfying the appetite you worked up during the day on the way down. Here are some recommendations:

• The North Fork Brewery  (mile 20) This "beer shrine," pizzeria, and wedding chapel offers microbrews crafted on-site as well as tasty pizza, calzones, grinders, and salads.
• Grahams Restaurant  (mile 33) Under new ownership since 2011, Grahams Restaurant in Glacier continues to offer burgers, beer, and other house specialties.
• Milano's Pasta Fresca (mile 33) This family-run restaurant features fresh and authentic Italian cuisine as well as deli-style sandwiches and desserts. Their Foriana pasta dish, with anchovies and raisins, is a unique and tasty dish.

Salish Sea Oyster Road Trip

Slurp your way through local farms and restaurants during this Salish Sea oyster road trip.

Washington State is renowned for its variety of oysters, and a scenic road trip is the perfect way to experience these tasty bivalves. This four-day Salish Sea oyster road trip will take you from Blaine near the Canadian border down into the San Juan Islands, with an optional extension to Whidbey Island.

Just like with wine, the subtle taste profile of an oyster can vary by location. The salinity, temperature, and food sources create each oyster’s unique flavor, whether it be briny, sweet, creamy, mineral, vegetal, or sharp. Explore these flavors as you slurp your way through local restaurants, visit oyster farms, and enjoy excursions like sea kayaking or whale watching in postcard-worthy settings.

Salish Sea Oyster Road Trip Itinerary

This road trip can be done in either direction. If heading out from the Seattle area, consider starting on Whidbey Island and following the itinerary in reverse, ending in Blaine.

Day 1: Blaine to Bellingham

Start your oyster road trip near the Canadian border in the coastal town of Blaine, where you can grab lunch at family-owned Drayton Harbor Oyster Company. The bar and nearby oyster farm are operated by a father-son duo with backgrounds in fisheries biology.

Enjoy sustainably cultivated Drayton Harbor Pacific oysters grilled, stewed, or raw on an idyllic patio overlooking the water. For beer fans, don’t miss the Dark Harbor Oyster Stout, a “black beer and bivalve” collaboration with Atwood Ales, which uses the oyster shell, meat, and brine in the brewing process.

Afterward, cruise south to Bellingham, stopping at Birch Bay State Park. There, the Terrell Marsh Interpretive Trail leads to a rare saltwater and freshwater estuary frequented by great blue herons.

Once in Bellingham, hang your hat at the Heliotrope Hotel, a modernized vintage motel with outdoor communal spaces featuring cornhole and a fire pit. If you want to be near the water, consider the Hotel Bellwether, a luxury boutique hotel next to the marina on Bellingham Bay where guests can snag complimentary bikes to pedal around the bay. 

Work up an appetite with a stroll along the boardwalk from Boulevard Park to the Fairhaven neighborhood and back, taking in water views. This is also a great spot to catch sunset.

For dinner, continue your quest for oysters at Rock and Rye Oyster House in downtown. The menu changes with the seasons and highlights local sustainable seafood. In addition to a raw menu of Washington oysters, guests can expect options such as oyster chowder and oysters Rockefeller with pork belly. Don’t overlook their craft cocktails. Try the Garden of Eternal Sunshine–snap pea vodka or gin, atxa blanco, falernum, and lime bitters.

Day 2: Bellingham to San Juan Island

Fuel up at Narrative Coffee with a latte and homemade buttermilk-biscuit egg sandwich with arugula and aioli before making your way to nearby Larrabee State Park for a leisurely kayak ride. Moondance Sea Kayak offers half-day excursions and will take care of all the logistics.

Next, take the stunning Chuckanut Drive Scenic Byway toward Anacortes, where ferries depart to the San Juan Islands (make sure to check the ferry schedule, make reservations in advance, and show up early). The drive takes around an hour, so there’s time to enjoy the views of Samish Bay with the San Juan Islands in the distance. And, of course, stop for oysters.

In Bow, Taylor Shellfish Farms’  Samish Oyster Bar and Shellfish Market is great for a casual lunch of freshly shucked oysters. Visit on the weekdays to avoid a crush of shellfish lovers. You might get to try an Olympia oyster (known as the Oly) – a smaller, more sensitive species than the common Pacific oyster.

Until the 1900s, Olys ruled the West Coast and played an important part in Native American culture. Overharvesting and pollution almost drove them into extinction. Today, Taylor Shellfish Farms is working to help bring back the Oly by participating in the Supporting Oyster Aquaculture and Restoration initiative. The program procures Oly spawn and Pacific oyster shells from shellfish farmers to create new Oly beds.

If upscale dining is more your style, consider stopping at  The Oyster Bar , also located along Chuckanut Drive. Diners can enjoy six different kinds of oysters offered at its raw bar, all sourced from Washington and British Columbia waters.

Continue your northern Salish Sea oyster road trip through Skagit County’s rich farmland. If passing through in the fall, you might be lucky enough to catch the Festival of Family Farms, which features Taylor Shellfish. Meet shellfish farmers, tour the farm’s oyster beds in the tidelands, and watch shucking demonstrations.

Once in Anacortes, catch a ferry to San Juan Island. After arriving on the island, consider basing yourself at Lakedale. Set in the interior of the island on 82 acres of forest and lakes, this resort has accommodations for all preferences and budgets. For those looking to stay near the water, Roche Harbor Resort offers views of the marina and a scenic garden.

Day 3 and 4: San Juan Islands

Start your first day in the islands with a morning farm tour at Westcott Bay Shellfish Co. , a family-run aquaculture farm near Roche Harbor. Tours take place during low tide and include six raw oysters and a drink. A staff member will answer questions and give a behind-the-scenes look at shellfish cultivation and harvesting. Westcott farms both the Pacific oyster and the Olympia, and they invest in clean water and sustainability practices.

Afterward, head to The Tide Tables, Westcott’s lunch restaurant. From the water’s edge seating, you can watch the shellfish farmers working the tidal beds. Waitstaff can provide instructions on how to shuck your own oysters. Don’t miss the kitchen’s specialty: barbecue grilled oysters served with a variety of scratch butter compounds.

After lunch, stretch your legs by exploring the tide pools at Grandma’s Cove in San Juan National Park. The half-mile shallow shelf hosts anemones, sculpin, mussels, crabs, and a variety of seaweeds. Be sure to be gentle while exploring and practice good  tide pool etiquette .

If you want to get out on the water, consider a whale-watching tour. San Juan Outfitters offers wildlife tours where naturalists not only point out orcas, but also porpoises, humpback whales, and bald eagles. A portion of each ticket goes into a fund for salmon and orca conservation. Alternatively, strike out on your own to Lime Kiln Point State Park, considered by many as one of the best places in the world to view whales from land.

Orcas can be sighted throughout the year, but your best bet for spotting the three Southern Resident pods is usually from May through September.

For dinner, check out Duck Soup. Nestled into a forest overlooking idyllic ponds, this upscale restaurant puts the bounty of the islands on display, from local produce and wild-harvested botanicals to fresh seafood. In the summer, lounge on the deck. In the winter, cozy up by their stone firepit.

Orcas Island Excursion

On day two, either stay on San Juan Island and explore its art galleries, beaches, and natural beauty or continue your Salish Sea oyster road trip by catching a morning ferry to Orcas Island, the home of  Buck Bay Shellfish Farm . The farm’s casual market and restaurant boasts buoy-forward décor and picnic tables right on the bay. They serve Buck Bay oysters, as well as crab mac and cheese and margaritas by the pint. When possible, they harvest ingredients from their 4-acre garden and prioritize local ingredients.

Pass the hours exploring Eastsound, the island’s main town, or drive to the summit of Mount Constitution for sweeping views before catching the ferry back to San Juan Island. After a day of adventures, head to Friday Harbor for dinner at Friday’s Crabhouse. It’s the perfect stop to wait for a ferry and watch the hustle and bustle of Friday Harbor’s waterfront. Oysters are served breaded, barbecued, and raw. Their crabcakes and fish tacos are delicious choices as well.

Day 5: Optional Extension to Whidbey Island

Have extra time? Once you’re back on the mainland, continue your Salish Sea oyster road trip south to Whidbey Island. Drive across the stunning Deception Pass Bridge on the northern side of the island and make your way to Coupeville. Located on Penn Cove, The Oyster Catcher serves oysters broiled, raw, and fried. The rest of their menu is thoughtful and creative—think beet salad with nasturtium leaves and goat milk mascarpone or ceviche with octopus, scallops, halibut, and kohlrabi.

Around the corner, stroll the grounds at the Captain Whidbey, a historic lodge tucked away in old-growth forest along the coastline. Lounge in a hammock or enjoy a drink on the waterfront deck.

In addition to oysters, visitors can dine on mussels, a bivalve for which Penn Cove is famous. In March, the Penn Cove Musselfest celebrates shellfish with chowder-tasting competitions and boat tours out to the mussel beds.

Head south along the island, stopping for a stroll around Meerkerk Gardens, which boasts 10 acres of display gardens and is famous for its rhododendrons. Alternatively, hike under the canopy of an old-growth forest at South Whidbey State Park . The day-use park has a trail that accesses a beach with panoramas of the Olympic Mountains.

At the southern end of the island in Langley, grab a bite at the Saltwater Fish House and Oyster Bar , which has a daily chalkboard of raw oyster offerings, not to mention its fried oysters and chips basket. The menu also leans heavily into Penn Cove mussels.

For those who want to base themselves in Langley, the Inn at Langley offers water views within walking distance to downtown, where you can grab breakfast before heading home.

Home to Semiahmoo County Park, Semiahmoo Resort-Golf-Spa, Semiahmoo Marina and the beach at the M.V. Plover Dock

Walking the trail system on Semiahmoo Spit is a very popular regional activity, and city attraction. Some of the many highlights include; the trail’s easy access, a variety of birding and wildlife viewing, and highly regarded scenic vistas of the harbor and the Salish Sea. The entire length of the main trail that spans from Semiahmoo Parkway to the Resort is paved, and features a primitive trail through state parklands with an entrance located just past the narrowest part of the Spit. Semiahmoo Resort features public boardwalks that extend over the water, and there is an inviting gravel trail that connects to the Semiahmoo Marina. Walking the entire loop, following the path from Semiahmoo Resort to Semiahmoo County Park and back, is a little farther than 2½ miles, and farther still if you walk on the beach. The M.V. Plover Dock connects directly to the trail at the end of the Spit where passengers can board the Historic M.V. Plover Passenger Ferry for a special voyage to Blaine Harbor during the Spring and Summer seasons. You’ll find spectacular scenic vistas on all sides of the Semiahmoo Spit, and facilities available at Semiahmoo County Park and Semiahmoo Resort.

Drayton Cove trail begins at Semiahmoo County Park and travels southeast along the inside of Drayton Harbor. The trail, which used to be a part of Drayton Harbor Road, follows the eastern shoreline of the harbor through the forest. You’ll experience stunning views along the way and a covering of large trees to help keep you stay cool on warmer days. Here, you’ll decide to either walk back to Semiahmoo County Park along the shoreline, or head up the hill along a short dirt switchback trail beside a small babbling creek. Continue uphill, and the trail leads to a sidewalk where you’ll take a right onto Drayton Harbor Road and follow the 10-foot wide, paved path to Semiahmoo Parkway. Take another right and walk down the hill to Semiahmoo County Park, towards Semiahmoo Resort. The entire loop up the hill and back to Semiahmoo County Park is a distance just over 2 miles.

Semiahmoo Parkway Trail is a high standard, paved multimode trail that is well maintained by the City of Blaine, and follows Semiahmoo Parkway. Since parking is not permitted along the Parkway, the trail is best accessed by parking at the Semiahmoo County Park. The distance from the county park to the gate at the Horizon Neighborhood, near the edge of the city limits is just over 2¼ miles, or just under 5 miles round trip. This spacious trail is detached from the roadway as it traverses the Semiahmoo Uplands and surrounding residential neighborhoods. Please note, side roads along this trail lead to private, gated communities and no facilities are available.

Marine Park is a perfect destination for outdoor fun! Its stunning half-mile waterfront trail provides great views of the International Peace Arch and White Rock B.C. to the north, while its eastern half is dedicated to wildlife viewing with excellent habitat for overwintering water fowl. Guests can also enjoy pocket beaches, a large nautical themed playground, and public restrooms on the western side of the park. There are plenty of amenities such as picnic shelters, barbecue stands and benches along the entire waterfront trail. Additionally, there is a separate paved trail alongside Marine Drive that is great for strollers and cyclists. The ultimate experience awaits at the end of Marine Drive at Jorgensen Pier with more fun activities! What to find in Blaine Marine Park:

Take a stroll through Peace Arch State Park for a delightful pairing of tall luscious trees, expansive lawns, a playground, interpretive wayside signage, and fascinating art sculptures during the year-round International Peace Arch Sculpture Exhibit . Follow the paved trail from the parking lot toward the towering International Peace Arch. Constructed in 1921, the Arch commemorates the 100th anniversary of the peace accords between the United States and Britain, ending the War of 1812. The 67-foot Peace Arch is on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors to the park will need a Discover Pass or pay $10 for day-use parking.

International Peace Arch Sculpture Exhibit

 Peace Arch State Park’s picturesque landscape and magnificent gardens host the International Peace Arch Sculpture Exhibit every year.

Blaine’s popular Jorgensen Public Pier is accessible by a walkway located at the end of Marine Drive. Currently closed to vehicles, guests are welcome to visit the pier by walking one-block from the parking lot on Marine Drive to this prominent, overwater pier that sits on the mouth of Drayton Harbor. Jorgensen Pier has excellent views of our stunning waterfront and an array of maritime activity and is a popular crabbing and fishing spot for local families and visitors alike. Typically, you’ll find a cart at the end of Marine Drive to assist you with transporting your gear from the public parking area on the south side of Marine Drive in the Port of Bellingham’s parking lot.

Blaine Marina

The Wharf Loop Trail is an approximate 2-mile loop from the Blaine Welcome Center that connects Marine Park, Jorgensen Public Pier and the Blaine Marina trails. Blaine is still considered an active commercial fishing harbor. This loop is a great way to see Marine Park and the working commercial and recreational waterfront.

Peace Portal Community Trail is a paved separated multimodal trail that starts at the south end of downtown Blaine. From the Cherry Street Parklet on Peace Portal Drive south to Hughes Avenue, the 10-foot wide paved trail is approximately 1.1 miles with scenic vistas over Drayton Harbor. Roundtrip it’s 2.2 miles that take you past old Victorian homes and the Salishan Neighborhood. Future plans will extend the trail to the City limits near Dakota Creek, and then on to Birch Bay.

Lincoln Park is 27 acres of wandering trails through majestic old growth forest. Although most of the trails are constructed from compacted natural earth, you’ll also find a nice, wide paved trail on the north side of the park (both are accessible from D. or E. Streets). The perimeter loop around the park showcases a wide variety of old trees, and you’ll find the trails on the eastern loop to be more primitive with a more challenging terrain. The primary entrances to the park are on H. Street and D. Street, and both provide parking. Please note, there are no public restrooms available in the park. Lincoln Park is an off-leash dog park and home to an 18-hole championship caliber disk golf course.

I have a European passport, is there a lot of hassle crossing the border a) into Canada and b) back into the US?

A friend recommended driving from Blaine to a closer city and then taking a "Sky Train" to get into Vancouver city. Has anyone taken this train?

Has anyone got experience with doing a day trip to Vancouver? Did you drive? Take the train? What was the border crossing like, how long did it take etc?

The border crossing won't be a big hassle but the wait to come back to the US can be hrs long. You could also take the train from Bellingham to Vanc BC which is quite scenic but the times may not work for you. Post on the Vancouver BC forum and you'll get better results.

Make sure you bring all your paperwork. For EU countries the US visa does it, but bring whatever you've got.

Parking in vanc is aggravating, but if there is a group of you it is still probably cheaper than the sky train. Especially if you want to go to the Lynn Canyon Bridge, tour Stanley Park, or have (awesome) Chinese food in Richmond.
