Star Cruises fleet

Star pisces, review of star cruises.

Star Cruises (starcruises.com/sg/en) is owned by Genting Hong Kong (GHK) and is ranked world's 3rd biggest cruise company, following Carnival Corporation and Royal Caribbean Cruises LTD . The company dominates the Asia-Pacific market and is listed on the Singapore Exchange and Hong Kong Stock Exchange. In 2015, GHK introduced the corporation's newest cruise line brand - Dream Cruises . The new company started with 2 newbuilds - both top-luxury mega-liners, built specifically for the Asian / Chinese market.

Another large Chinese cruise brand is the new company (2015-founded) Adora Cruises/CSSC Carnival China Cruise Shipping . At the following link can be found listed all CruiseMapper's news related to Star Cruises owner Genting Hong Kong .

IMPORTANT : On January 19, 2022, the parent company GHK-Genting Hong Kong Ltd (Malaysia) filed for bankruptcy. On Jan 10th, for insolvency filed the two GHK-owned shipbuilding companies in Germany - MV Werften and Lloyd Werft. On Jan 27th, Dream Cruises filed a winding-up petition with the Bermuda Court for liquidation. and the appointment of the provisional liquidators working with GHK.

NEWS : In late-April 2022, was announced that the docked in Malaysia ships Star Pisces (1990-built), SuperStar Gemini (1992) and SuperStar Aquarius (1993) are listed for scrapping and soon to the beached at Alang India . SuperStar Libra (1988) was last AIS reported on April 7th (in Wismar Germany). The three liners' last crew signed off on May 17th, as new/skeleton crew were hired to take them to the scrapyard for dismantling and recycling.

On August 31, 2022, GHK's Star Cruises Asia Holding Ltd announced entering into a SPA/Share Purchase Agreement to sell its wholly-owned Star Market Ltd (100% of its shares) for US$3,5M/RM15,84M to the company Resorts World Inc Pte Ltd. Resorts World is 50-50 owned by Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay (GHK's former Executive Director) and Genting Berhad (Genting Group's parent company, if which Lim Kok Thay holds ~30% shares). Star Market owns trademarks and intellectual property rights.

Company history

The company's introduction on the global cruise shipping market allowed Star Cruises to tap into profitable and more mature markets in Europe and North America. Its services cater to Asian guests, as well as to Europeans, Australians and North Americans, interested in Asian destinations. Star Cruises chairman was Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay, son of the late Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong (founder of Genting Highlands, Malaysia).

Genting Star Cruises (Asia) logo

Star Cruises was established as an associate of Genting Group of Malaysia, incorporated on November 10, 1993, in Bermuda, with corporate headquarters in Hong Kong China . The first ships of the company were two cruise ferries bought from the bankrupted estate of Swedish Rederi AB Slite. Star Cruises was the world's first major cruise company to recruit Filipinos for its ships.

The company purchased several other used vessels in the following years. In 1998, it took delivery of the first newbuild - SuperStar Leo (now Norwegian Spirit) . Sistership SuperStar Virgo (Explorer Dream/Resorts World One) followed in 1999. The same year Star Cruises acquired Sun Cruises.

In 2000, Star Cruises also acquired NCL (Norwegian Cruise Line) , including the subsidiaries "Norwegian Capricorn Line" and "Orient Lines", becoming the biggest global cruise line in the world. Norwegian Capricorn Line's operations were soon merged into Star Cruises. Before the NCL purchase, Star Cruises had several other newbuilds (either under construction or planned), but following the merger, most of them joined NCL's fleet. However, in August 2007, Star Cruises sold 50% of NCL (for USD 1 billion) to Apollo Management, retaining just 28% stake in NCL.

In 2001, Star Cruises founded the sister company "Cruise Ferries", which started operations in July with the passenger ferry Wasa Queen on short itineraries between Hong Kong and Xiamen. These were followed by overnight gambling cruises - roundtrip from Hong Kong and from Port Klang (Kuala Lumpur). Wasa Queen stopped operating and was sold to another company in 2007, and eventually was scrapped in 2013.

The then-largest ship in the fleet - SuperStar Leo - was transferred in 2004 to Norwegian Cruise Line to take over Norwegian Sky voyages. Since 2006, the trend has been that newbuilds were to be constructed for NCL, and the old ships in the Norwegian fleet would be transferred to Star Cruises fleet in Asia.

In 2008, both Orient Lines and NCL America brands were discontinued, with Orient's sole ship, ms Marco Polo, sold to the Greece-based Global Maritime. The same year, the first ship from NCL Norwegian was transferred to the fleet of Star Cruises as SuperStar Libra .

In 2011, Star Cruises received a brand new hull art. SuperStar Aquarius , Star Pisces , and SuperStar Virgo won their new attire. On April 27, 2012, it was announced that Norwegian Dream will join Star Cruises fleet and be renamed to SuperStar Gemini starting service in 2012.

On October 7, 2013, Star Cruises announced that together with their parent company, Genting Hong Kong had entered into an agreement with Meyer Werft, Germany for the construction of one new vessel. The vessel will be able to accommodate 3,364 passengers at double occupancy and will be delivered in Fall 2016.

On February 10, 2014, Star Cruises announced that a second ship was ordered and scheduled for delivery by Fall 2017. On February 9, 2015, the first steel cutting ceremony was held for Genting World at Meyer Werft shipyard. Both newbuilds will weigh 150,000 GT.

In May 2018, Genting Cruise Lines signed a partnership deal with Wirecard (digital payments / online shop development company) for implementing a fleetwide onboard payment system. The system ("Quick Pay") was first installed on World Dream and Genting Dream, then launched on SuperStar Virgo. "Quick Pay" allows the passenger to be in full control of their onboard money spending - including pre-authorized limits, account management, monitoring, paying the total bill at disembarkation. The technology is based on scanning individual QR codes (during check-in, in staterooms or via the ship's intranet network, then selecting the "Quick Pay" option. Payments can be made via Alipay (Chinese online payment platform) and the credit cards Visa, American Express, Mastercard, Diners Club, JCB, UnionPay. The mobile app allows passengers to set up pre-authorized amounts for themselves, as well as for friends and family members.

On March 2, 2018, via letters and emails sent to all booked customers, GHK announced that the liner SuperStar Libra ends its passenger shipping operations for Star Cruises on June 27, 2018. Since August 2018, the vessel serves as a hotel ship in Wismar (Germany) for the shipbuilding company MV Werften. SuperStar Libra is permanently docked (moored) at MV Werften Wismar shipyard's quay. Since April 2016, GHK fully owns MV WERFTEN - a new company incorporating the 3 Nordic Yards in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern - the shipyards in Rostock , Stralsund , and Wismar.

(new) Genting Global-Class cruise ships

On May 10, 2016, the parent company GHK (Genting Hong) signed with Lloyd Werft Group in Wismar Germany a shipbuilding contract for all 10 new cruise vessels . In 2015, GHK purchased a majority stake in Lloyd Werft (dockyard in Bremerhaven Germany ). In 2016, GHK purchased Lloyd Werft's remaining 30%, plus the three shipyards owned by Nordic Yards (Wismar, Warnemunde, Stralsund), thus forming Lloyd Werft Group.

Genting Star Cruises new ship (Global-Class)

Of the 10 newbuilds, 6 are riverboats plus 2 ocean-going (all 8 for the GHK's subsidiary Crystal Cruises ) and 2 are mega liners (for Star Cruises and Dream Cruises). The new GHK liners are sisterships of the Global-Class, each with gross tonnage 204,000 GT tons, LOA length 341 m (1120 ft) and passenger capacity 5000 (lower berths). Ship deliveries were scheduled for 2020 (for Dream Cruises) and 2021 (for Star Cruises). The ship-order has optional 2 more vessels of the same class.

Global Class ships feature artificial intelligence technologies (including facial and voice recognition for expedited passenger services - boarding, disembarkation, payments), robots (performing mundane tasks), Cineplex (theme park), Asian spa complex, multiple Asian dining venues (including fast food), both affordable and premium retail shopping facilities, roller coaster, water park (with 5 slides), surf simulator. Staterooms are designed for Asian families and can sleep up to 2-4 persons. Most cabins are with two (split) bathrooms. Each liner has 8 sets of escalators and 28 elevators.

Vessel's waste and water management system was provided by Evac (world's leading company building integrated waste-wastewater-water management systems). The company's Complete Cleantech Solution package includes a vacuum collection system, wastewater treatment plant, dry and wet waste treatment plant, freshwater desalination plants (based on reverse osmosis). The freshwater generation plants have the capacity to produce over 3000 m3 of freshwater per day. The contract with Evac was signed on January 3, 2017.

On January 9, 2017, was signed a contract with ABB for delivery of Azipods (power-propulsion units), automation systems and the marine software for all 5 new Genting cruise ships ordered for both brands - Crystal and Star. The 3x Crystal vessels are from the Crystal Endeavor series (polar-class expedition yachts).

These are the first purpose-built ships for the contemporary Chinese market regarding onboard amenities and services (food, cultural events, shows, enrichment programs, shopping, tours/excursions. Cruise ticket prices will be affordable. In May 2019 were unveiled more Global-Class vessel details. The ships will have industry's first theme park at sea, largest cinema at sea, world's longest roller coaster at sea, self-guided robotic assistants, industry's largest standard staterooms (sized 20 m2), Bluetooth cabin door locks, touch-screen control panel, smartphone-control of different en-suite functions (mood lighting, air-conditioning, etc).

On March 8, 2018, at MV Werften shipyard ( Bremerhaven Germany ) started the construction of the first of the two Global-Class Genting cruise liners.

Genting Star Cruises new ship (Global-Class)

The GHK-owned Lloyd Werft Group has the capacity to produce annually 2 mega liners (over 200,000 GT tons each) plus 1 mid-sized vessel (around 50,000 GT tons). Lloyd Werft has 2 new covered drydocks, a new ship launching platform and over 0,5 million m2 of covered fabrication halls.

In December 2018, Genting Cruise Lines announced plans to build smaller-sized (Contemporary-class) ships for Star Cruises from the German shipbuilder MV Werften. The first liner will be delivered in 2023. In 2019, SuperStar Virgo was renamed "Explorer Dream" and transferred to Dream Cruises in April 2019.

Star Cruises shipboard experience

The big appeal to western clients of Star Cruises is that its ships not only take guests around Asia but also let you experience an Asian lifestyle.

"SuperStar" ships were the first to offer the largest number of restaurants afloat. This innovation later passed on to Norwegian's "freestyle dining". SuperStars Virgo and Leo offer Italian, Asian, Japanese and Chinese restaurants. Virgo also has the only Indian restaurant afloat. Naturally, Star Cruises ships offer the usual formal dining room, casual buffets, and poolside grills. All dining venues offer open seating for ultimate flexibility.

Shipboard entertainment features spectacular shows by Chinese acrobats, card rooms (Mah Jong), private rooms for parties, karaoke rooms. Onboard service is friendly, impeccable, discreet. Star Cruises has a no-tipping policy and brags with one of Asian cruising industry's highest crew-to-passenger ratios - one staff member for every two passengers.

Star Cruises predominantly markets Asian travelers. The internationally focused SuperStar Virgo attracted passengers from Japan, Malaysia, Australia New Zealand, as well as adventurous-spirited North Americans and Europeans.

In 2018, Genting Cruise Lines signed an agreement with Okinawa Agricultural Cooperatives Association and Leospo Inc. Following the partnership, on select GHK-owned cruise liners is offered Okinawa-sourced food and local produce.

  • The new onboard dining options include the famous Okinawa Wagyu beef and Okinawa Agu pork. The offer is available on select ships and during summer when they cruise to Okinawa.
  • In 2018 (April through November), these premium food specialties were available on three boats (World Dream, SuperStar Aquarius, SuperStar Gemini, SuperStar Virgo). The exclusive gourmet dishes were served via specially designed theme menus. They also included the traditional Japanese dishes Shabu Shabu (with ingredients stirred in cooking pot) and Teppanyaki (iron griddle cooked food), as well as BBQ Okinawa Agu Pork and the wok-fried Okinawa beef (with bitter gourd garlic) and Okinawa beef rib eye (with sweet plum sauce).

Genting fly-cruise deals

In June 2017, Genting Cruise Lines (grouping the companies Dream Cruises and Star Cruises) and Asia's largest airline "China Southern Airlines" signed a Memorandum of Understanding/MoU on an exclusive "flight and cruise" partnership in China.

  • The deal is for discounted fly-cruise deals on cruises leaving from homeport Guangzhou-Nansha - a premium travel hub and cruise homeport in Asia.
  • By this strategic agreement, both China Southern Airlines and Genting combined their resources in sales, marketing, promotions, and product development, creating a competitive travel product by the new "Air+Cruise+Travel" program. The program targets both individual and group travelers.

Free Birthday cruise

Star Cruises offers free Birthday cruise deals on select ships and departure dates. Company's "Free Birthday Celebrant Package" consists of:

  • Cabin decorations (set up on the embarkation day)
  • 0,5 kg chocolate cake
  • Birthday card
  • Cruise voucher (at the ship's Reception) is applicable at onboard retail shops and spa/wellness outlets. To use the voucher, you need to swipe your access card at the outlets. When you settle your bill during checkout, the voucher's value is deducted from the total amount due.
  • Free Wifi vouchers for 2 passengers for the entire cruise (at the ship's Reception). Wi-Fi connections on Start Cruises ships are available in all public areas and in staterooms.

Genting Cruises Private Island Resort

In early November 2017, GHK corporation signed an agreement with the Macleod Island 's owner "Tint Tint Myanmar Group" (headquartered in Yangon Burma ) to jointly built new cruise ship facilities on this private island.

Cruise line private Islands are among the best-known assets of the world's largest cruise shipping companies ( Carnival Corporation , RCCL-Royal Caribbean , NCL , MSC ). However, most such private island resorts are located in the Caribbean.

GHK's partnering with Tint Tint Myanmar Group makes Macleod Island the first Asian private cruise resort destination. It is opened exclusively for Genting cruise ship tourists visiting the island via ships operated by the GHK-owned Dream Cruises and Star Cruises. Among GHK's other Asian projects are Guangzhou-Nansha Port development (in China) and Port Danang (in Vietnam).

Macleod Island was first visited by a Star Cruises ship (SuperStar Libra) on November 3, 2017. The 5-night / 6-day itinerary also included Penang Malaysia  and Phuket Thailand .

(Coronavirus crisis) passenger shipping pause 2020-2021

Despite the global Coronavirus crisis , Genting Cruise Lines (shipowner) didn't suspend its fleet's passenger shipping operations. Instead, the company (parent of Dream Cruises and Star Cruises) expanded its cancellation policy with "Cruise As You Wish". It allowed all existing and new bookings made before or on October 30, 2020 (initially July 31), to be canceled penalty-free up to 48 hours (prior departure).

These bookings were fully refunded (100%) via FCC (future cruise credit). With rebooking, the amount of the fare paid is automatically transferred to any Dream Cruises or Star Cruises itinerary starting before or on March 31, 2021 (initially December 31 2020).

Itinerary of Star Cruises

Following on Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit held in Qingdao, Star Cruises celebrated the inaugural cruise of SuperStar Aquarius from her new homeport Qingdao on June 13, 2018. Guests from the Shandong peninsula and neighboring cities are now able to enjoy journeys to Japanese destinations like Beppu , Fukuoka City , Nagasaki , and Sasebo . The flagship SuperStar Virgo also offered Qingdao homeport itineraries (November 2018 through March 2019).

Star Cruises officially set a record number of homeport deployments done by the same brand in Port Qingdao. By homeporting here SuperStar Virgo, the company became the only cruise line in history to have 2 ships homeported in Qingdao during the same year.

While cruising at sea, passengers enjoy a hassle-free experience onboard SuperStar Aquarius, complemented by Asian hospitality and delicacies unique to Star Cruises. The flagship of Star Cruises, SuperStar Virgo, calls Qingdao homeport starting in November 2018, taking passengers on 4-night voyages to Kagoshima , Fukuoka, and Nagasaki.

Note: Starting operations for Dream Cruises in mid-April 2019, SuperStar Virgo was renamed "MS Explorer Dream" and homeported in Shanghai (China). For the winter season 2020, Explorer Dream was deployed in Australia-New Zealand.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Deals Guide

When it comes to planning the ultimate getaway, there are so many reasons why cruise vacations rank among the most popular travel options. First of all, they’re completely stress-free. On a cruise vacation, all the planning is taken care of by the cruise line — from the destinations you sail to and the shore excursions available at each port, to a full range of entertainment and activities happening onboard every day. If you’re not a planner, or if the only things you’re looking to focus on during your getaway is savoring great food, relaxing, and soaking up the sights, cruise vacations are the way to go. A cruise vacation is also a great option if you’re traveling with the whole family, especially when you opt for a Royal Caribbean cruise. All of the ships in this cruise line’s fleet offer family-friendly experiences for guests of all ages. Even little ones will find plenty of ways to play with spaces and activities designed for tots to tweens. One of the top reasons savvy travelers love cruising, though, is because of the incredible value it offers. With Royal Caribbean, your cruise fare includes access to most of the ship’s attractions, select dining venues and all of the entertainment onboard. If you want to make your experience even more all-inclusive, you can opt for beverage and specialty dining packages that cover drinks and dinner at some of the most exclusive restaurants in the fleet. On top of all that, the cruise line presents frequent limited-time offers and seasonal sales, making it easy to score big savings when booking your vacation.

I’m ready to start planning my cruise — how can I score the best deals?

Whether you’re looking to book a short getaway or a longer adventure to far-flung destinations, Royal Caribbean makes it easy to save big on everything from your cruise fare to special experiences onboard and onshore. The first step to making sure you get the best deals is to join the cruise line’s email list. Once you’ve signed up, you’ll receive regular updates on all the latest offers, like deals by destination , kids sail free promotions and flash sales. The savings don’t end when you book your cruise, though. Once you’ve made a reservation, you’ll also receive notifications about special offers for onboard experiences — like discounts on beverage and specialty dining packages, shore excursions, spa services, and more via My Royal Cruise .

Does it pay to plan ahead, or should I wait until the last minute?

It’s an age-old question — does the early bird really get the worm, or are there perks to taking a “wait-and-see” approach? If you’re booking a cruise vacation, you’ll find there are benefits to both strategies. Planning ahead is a great way to score big savings , as Royal Caribbean often runs early saver deals to guests booking well in advance. It’s also pretty safe to assume prices usually go up as availability goes down the closer you get to your sail date, so booking ahead is a surefire way to lock in a great rate. That said, booking a cruise at the last minute can also yield some unexpected savings — but only if the itinerary you’re interested in hasn’t sold out yet.

If you can be flexible when it comes to your travel dates, you’ll have your pick of unbeatable savings. Popular vacation dates — like the holidays , spring break , summer vacation and week long cruises — sometimes see the highest prices (though you might get lucky with a seasonal sale). If you have the flexibility to travel during the shoulder season or off season, you’ll likely enjoy big savings on popular stateroom categories , like Balconies and even Suites. The deals don’t only apply to your cruise fare, though. Once you’ve booked your vacation, you could easily unlock discounts and specials on add-ons, including beverage and dining packages , Voom® high speed internet, shore excursions, and amazing experiences not included in your cruise fare — like a day of pampering at Vitality SM Spa, a behind-the-scenes tour of the ship’s galley followed by brunch, VIP seating at shows, and much more.

How can I maximize the value of my cruise vacation?

There are plenty of ways to get more bang for your buck when you sail on a Royal Caribbean cruise. Every ship in the fleet offers a range of delicious complimentary dining options , but you can dig into even more crave-worthy flavor by purchasing a Specialty Dining Package for less ahead of your cruise. Add a Specialty Beverage Package — which includes unlimited alcoholic beverages, soda, and more — and your experience is as close to all-inclusive as it gets. And with so many complimentary shows and attractions onboard, you can easily fill every sea day without spending a single dollar extra.

Royal Caribbean also offers deals based on departure ports  and destinations, so if you’re a flexible traveler looking for great savings, you can plan your next vacation around which itineraries are on sale. Just check your email or visit RoyalCaribbean.com/cruise-deals to stay up to date on promotions, sales and special offers. You can even browse sailings and deals by homeport, destination and season, so you can rest assured you’re getting the best possible deal no matter when or where in the world you choose to set sai.

Port of Call Port of Call (Arrival, Departure)

Rome/Civitavecchia

star cruise offer

Located about 80 kilometers northwest of Rome, the Port of Civitavecchia is the port of Rome and a busy ferry and cargo port serving Italy and southern Europe. Lying on Italy’s eastern shores on the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Port of Civitavecchia has excellent direct connections to Rome. It is an important cruise and ferry port with regular passage to Sardinia, Malta, Sicily, Tunis, and Barcelona. Fishing is of secondary importance to the Port of Civitavecchia. In addition to ocean-going traffic, the Port of Civitavecchia also contains a thermoelectric center and metallurgical works. In 2006, over 51 thousand people called the Port of Civitavecchia home. The Port of Civitavecchia was built on an earlier Etruscan settlement. Emperor Trajan founded the Port of Civitavecchia in the early 2nd Century, calling it Centumcellae. Today, Trajan’s Port is preserved within today’s Port of Civitavecchia. A busy growing town during the late Roman era, the Port of Civitavecchia was attacked by Vandals and then destroyed by the Saracens in 828 AD. Residents escaped to the nearby Allumiere Mountains where Pope Leo IV built a walled town in 854. Eventually, the people returned to Civitavecchia (the name means “old city”). At the end of the 15th Century, the Port of Civitavecchia was under frequent attack by pirates. The naval arsenal was constructed in 1508. Pope Paul III commissioned the building of the keep, which was designed by Donato Bramante and then finished by Michelangelo in 1537, to protect the Port of Civitavecchia from the pirate attacks. In 1696, Civitavecchia became a free port under Pope Innocent XII. Because it was Rome’s main port, the French occupied the Port of Civitavecchia in 1849. The Port of Civitavecchia was linked to Rome by the Rome and Civitavecchia Rail Road in 1859. When the Port of Civitavecchia became part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1870, it was one of the Papal State’s most strongly-fortified towns when Papal troops welcomed General Nino Bixio on behalf of the Italian unification forces into the Port of Civitavecchia fortress. World War II brought destruction to as much as three-quarters of the Port of Civitavecchia. Reconstruction enlarged the Port of Civitavecchia beyond its pre-war area. The Autorita Portuale Civitavecchia (Port of Rome) is responsible for managing and operating the Port of Civitavecchia as well as the ports of Fiumicino and Gaeta. The modern Port of Civitavecchia is at the center of rail, road, and air networks that link it with central Italy and the world. The Port of Civitavecchia has capacity to handle about 11 million tons of cargo per year and over 1.5 million passengers. Cargoes include forest products, cereals, iron and steel, chemicals, automobiles, containers, and liquid bulk. In 2007, the Port of Civitavecchia welcomed 856 cruise vessels carrying 1.6 million passengers, and the total number of passengers using ferries and cruise vessels was 3.8 million. In 2007, the Port of Civitavecchia handled a total of 7.7 million tons of cargo. This total included 1.5 million tons of liquid bulk, 1.7 million tons of solid bulk, 4.6 million tons of packages, and 31.1 thousand TEUs of containerized cargo. The Port of Civitavecchia contains 28 berths of a total 5.6 thousand meters in length with alongside depths from 6 to 18 meters. Port properties include five warehouses containing 36 thousand square meters for handling and storing cargoes. The intermodal terminal includes seven thousand square meters of storage space and 12.5 thousand square meters for loading/unloading rail cars and parking. The Port of Civitavecchia is one of the busiest ferry ports in the world. Just 80 kilometers northwest of Rome, it is the main tourist destination for people traveling to the Eternal City. Corfu Town (Kerkyra) is a principal port and the largest town in the Ionian islands. It is built between two Venetian castles, having its own unique atmosphere. It is a thriving mass of shops and businesses, set amongst a captivating and charming assortment of elegant buildings, churches, imposing fortresses and narrow alleyways leading to hidden squares. The tall buildings with the 'volta' (arches), the 'cantounia' (narrow flagstoned streets), the 'mouragia' (sea-walls) are showing all a clear Italian influence. One of the most beautiful walks in the town is around the Esplanade (Spianada square), one of the biggest squares in Europe which is the hub of the Corfiot's life. Here you can walk around or sit in one of the many cafe bars underneath the arches of the 'Liston', a name probably derived from a similar promenade in Venice. Liston was built during the imperial French occupation and is reminiscent of the larger 'Arcades' of the Rue de Rivoli in Paris. On the upper side of Esplanade stands a memorial to the British Lord High Commissioner Sir Thomas Maitland, built in 1816 in the shape of a circular building with Ionian columns. The Corfiots call this building 'sterna' (cistern) because this was where the entrance to the largest underground cistern of the town was to be found. Near the Maitland's monument, in front of the building where the Ionian Academy was housed, stands the statue of John Capodistrias, the first President of Greece. It is a work from the end of the 19th century showing the Governor standing deep in thought. Opposite the Liston is the the Old Fortress and 'Anthonas', the Municipal Gardens. In the gardens is the statue of Lord Guilford, showing the founder of the Ionian Academy in his academic robes holding an open book. Nearby are the busts of two famous Corfiots, the poet Lorenzo Mavilis and the writer Dinos Theotokis. At the northern end of Esplanade stands the Palace of St. Michael and St. George, one of the most elegant buildings in Corfu. Opposite the west front of the palace is a beautiful building which now houses the Reading Society of Corfu, the oldest cultural institute in modern Greece, founded in 1836. The Reading Society contains a unique library of Greek and foreign books as well as a large collection of manuscripts, newspapers, periodicals, paintings, maps and engravings mostly related to the Ionian islands. As one's gaze leaves the Esplanade, after lingering on the palace, it embraces a magnificent view towards the coastal road (Arseniou Street) with its sea-walls. Following along this road will take you to the Old Harbour of Corfu and the other Venetian castle, the one called the New Fortress. Along this road the narrow lanes ('cantounia') lead to the Campielo, the oldest quarter of the town. Here the visitor can find the oldest houses and many of the historic churches in Corfu. At the northern end of Capodistria Street stands the Capodistria Mansion, an excellent example of neo-classical architecture. It was built in 1835 by the Corfiot architect John Chronis and is considered one of the most beautiful buildings in Greece. Here John Capodistrias, the first President of Greece, was born. Another notable landmark in the old town is the central market. The most interesting street here is Nickiforou Theotoki as the rows upon rows of 'volta' standing on their stone columns and the tall buildings form one of the most characteristic aspects of Corfu Town. In a little square on Nickiforou Theotoki Street stands the building of the Ionian Bank, which was built in 1846 displaying a well-proportioned facade with finely detailed Ionian pilasters and pediment. On the first floor of the building the Paper Money Museum is housed. At the far end of the square is the Church of St. Spyridon. It shelters the body of St. Spyridon, the patron saint of Corfu and one of the great Saints of Greek Orthodoxy and draws a constant stream of pilgrims from all over Greece every year. On the Evgeniou Voulgareos Street stands the crenellated belfry of the Roman Catholic Church of the Annunciation a venerable building from the end of the 14th century. The whole building was destroyed in the World War II bombing, and the only remains are the belfry, two inscriptions and a bas-relief representing war trophies. Between Evgeniou Voulgareos Street and a modern square stands the most elegant of the Venetian buildings in Corfu, the Town Hall in baroque style. At the end of Moustoxydi Street stands another building of the period of British rule, the historic the Ionian Parliament. At the junction of the Garitsa coastal road and Alexandras Avenue stands the Douglas Obelisk, which also belongs to the same period, erected in honour of the Lord High Commissioner Sir Howard Douglas, to whom Corfu owes a lot of public works and philanthropic institutions.

Thira/Santorini

star cruise offer

Fira is a comparatively modern town, with houses built mostly during the 19th century when the old Venetian capital at Skaros became untenable due to earthquakes. The architecture is a jumble of Cycladic and Venetian, side by side, the similarities between the two being the stark whiteness. The impact of Aegean tourism has made itself felt in Fira, judging from the abundance of taverns, hotels, discotheques and shops. It is the largest town on the island and has gained preference with travelers because it is central and access to other parts of Santorini is made easy by either taxi or bus. From there you can indulge in some inspiring coastal walks. Wandering through the white cobbled streets of Fira, a town of about 2,000 inhabitants, one gets the feel of the old-world charm blended in with the modern day comforts. The town's archaeological museum is crammed with finds from excavations at Akrotiri. But besides being so interesting archaeologically, Santorini is essentially a beauty spot, an island whose cliffs seem to glow under an exceptionally clear light all day, but which at sunset glow redly, evoking that vast explosion more than 3000 years ago.

This seaside resort town has grown immensely in the last 30 years, and is especially popular with package holiday-makers from Europe. From a population of 6000 in the 1970s, it is now closer to 50,000, although a high proportion of this are part of the tourist industry and here only for the summer. Many cruising ships travelling around the Aegean Islands stop here, especially because of its close proximity (20km) to Selcuk. Kusadasi is a good base to explore this and other ancient cities like Priene and Didyma. Although there is little of historical interest in Kusadasi itself, the town is popular predominantly because of its many hotels, restaurants, souvenir and carpet shops, and lively nightlife. The Kale district has some old traditional houses and narrow streets, and gives some indication of what the town used to be like. The most famous beach is Kadinlar Plaji, 2.5km south of the town, dominated by huge hotels and can get very crowded in summer. There are several small beaches further south, and closer to town is Yilanci Burnu, the peninsular.

Athens/Piraeus

star cruise offer

Today Piraeus is the home base of Greek shipping, the largest commercial fleet in the world, apace bound to the sea like few others. The harbours of Zea and Mikrolimano as well as Phaliro play host to countless yachts and sailing craft throughout the year. Piraeus was known in medieval times as Porto Leone, a name due to the enormous stone lion, which guarded the port's entrance. Today, the life of Piraeus is centred on its three ports: the main, central one and those of Zea and Mikrolimano. You can walk around the central harbour, shared by cargo and passenger ships alike, and watch the constant comings and goings of goods and people from around the world. Having completed your tour of the central harbour of Piraeus you will then head south traversing the peninsula and arrive at Peiraiki, one of the most picturesque neighbour hoods in the city. Here one finds the harbour of Zea, one of the largest marinas in the Mediterranean. If the night finds you in the area, you can try one of the many bars found nearby. You can continue your tour along the waterfront heading towards Kastella but a small deviation toward the city centre will be useful for then you can visit the verdant square of the municipal Theatre with cafeterias and shops of all kinds surrounding it. The magnificent building housing the Municipal Theatre as well as the Town Hall and the Library complete the picture presented by the main square in the city. Piraeus's little natural harbours are among its busiest and most touristy areas: Mikrolimano, Passalimani, Zea, Freatida and Hatzikiriakio. Countless seaside tavernas provide delicious seafood washed down with the uniquely Greek drink, ouzo. The fresh smell of the sea and the sounds made by the assortment of caiques, yachts and sailing ships, which are moored next to the tables, complete the enjoyment of the food Beyond the port, the most impressive spots are the hills of Profitis Ilias and Kastela with their neoclassical mansions and modern buildings which look as they are hanging over the sea.

Messina is a harbor city in northeast Sicily, separated from mainland Italy by the Strait of Messina. It’s known for the Norman Messina Cathedral, with its Gothic portal, 15th-century windows and an astronomical clock on the bell tower. Nearby are marble fountains decorated with mythological figures, like the Fontana di Orione, with its carved inscriptions, and the Neptune Fountain, topped by a statue of the sea god.

Naples, a city in southern Italy, sits on the Bay of Naples. Nearby is Mount Vesuvius, the still-active volcano that destroyed nearby Roman town Pompeii. Dating to the 2nd millennium B.C., Naples has centuries of important art and architecture. The city's cathedral, the Duomo di San Gennaro, is filled with frescoes. Other major landmarks include the lavish Royal Palace and Castel Nuovo, a 13th-century castle.

Is It Worth It?

It's hard to say if this experience will be worth the cost.

If you are a hard core Star Wars fan, knowing that this price includes not only the room, but also food and drinks, park tickets to Hollywood Studios, and entertainment, this could definitely be something worth spending money on.

I do wonder if discounts for Annual Passholders will be provided, since a free park ticket to Hollywood Studios is not an incentive.

I also question if families with younger kids would get their monies worth out of this type of experience.

We'll find out more and update this article when this experience opens in March of 2022!

Reservations open on October 28, 2021.

Is Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser Worth the $5,000+ Cost?

star cruise offer

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser at Walt Disney World is undeniably expensive, with prices starting at ~$5,000 for two people and only increasing from there. We’re here to help you decide whether the new resort is “worth it” for you with comparisons to other theme park and cruise vacations, followed by commentary on whether we felt it offered sufficient value for money to us.

One of the difficulties in assessing the cost of Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is that there are no easy comparisons. This is unlike anything Walt Disney World has ever done, an amalgamation of a bunch of different entertainment offerings. Rather than being comparable to a theme park visit, it’s more like a cruise on land, with all-inclusive (mostly) food & drinks, similar staterooms, and comparable programming.

But wait, there’s more . Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser also has an immersive ‘choose-your-own-adventure’ style story layered on top, as well as opportunities for nearly-endless show elements. It’s an unprecedented hospitality and entertainment endeavor, with the end product being awesome or alienating, depending upon your perspective. As a threshold matter, you should determine whether this is good fit for your party by reading our spoiler-free Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Review .

To be frank, it’s difficult to argue that a lot of what Disney offers is “worth it” from an objective perspective. Rack rates for the Grand Floridian or Contemporary Resorts are usually higher than the Four Seasons Orlando, and Disney hotels don’t offer a commensurate caliber of service or quality to their real world counterparts. Disney Cruise Line is often exponentially more expensive than its counterparts for nearly-identical (or sometimes inferior) itineraries. The list goes on and on.

When it comes to all things Disney, there’s always  an inarticulable x-factor. An emotional or nostalgic pull that causes many people to overlook objective on-paper comparisons. We justify it on the basis of location, perks, theme, or other perceived advantages. But it boils down to something far more nebulous, intangible, or–dare we say– magical .

star cruise offer

This is true not just with Disney super fans, either. A large swath of the public is willing to pay premium pricing for Disney’s product and that’s in large part because there’s the perception that there’s no “substitute good” for what Disney offers. Never has that been more true than with Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser.

Cruises and luxury resorts, even those with the Disney brand or location attached obviously do have substitute goods. They may not have to compete on price for some consumers because of the aforementioned brand power, but they do have analogous alternatives. There are other (better) opulent hotels in Central Florida or cruise itineraries to the Caribbean or wherever.

star cruise offer

There is nothing else like Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser. Despite there being no reasonable baseline for comparison, people want one even more than normal since it’s so expensive and because they can’t fully comprehend just what the not-really-a-resort is and is not. Before plopping down so much money on such a big unknown, people want to know whether Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is worth it.

It should go without saying, but value is in the eye of the beholder. Moreover, not everyone is equally cost-conscious. If you’re some hotshot running a frozen banana stand empire, the price of going to play a star war is chump change for you. Meanwhile, if you’re a middle class family, the cost of doing 2 nights at Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser might exceed your annual vacation budget.

It’s impossible for us to put ourselves into everyone’s shoes and account for all financial circumstances and perceptions of value. The best we can do is offer our viewpoint and how it compares for us. Hopefully, this is useful for regular readers who are already familiar with how we do and don’t spend money.

For those who are not, we are generally frugal and try to save money wherever possible, while also having a willingness (and ability) to splurge on travel that we feel will be unique and memorable, and for which discounting or cost-cutting is not possible. We almost always avoid paying rack rates at Walt Disney World, but have done extravagant experiences and extensively traveled, usually on a budget or with the help of travel hacking.

Our voyage aboard Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser cost $6,634.32, but that was for a party of 4. We shared the room with another couple, friends of ours with whom we’ve previously traveled to Europe, Japan, and pretty much everywhere. Sarah and I paid a total of $3,317.16 for Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser–or $1,658.58 per person. (We could break that down by day, hour, or whatever other unit, but presumably you also have the calculator app on your phone.)

Obviously, sharing a room won’t be possible for everyone–or even most people–reading this. We did it both because of our aforementioned frugality, and also to see how comfortable or uncomfortable the close quarters of the cabin would be. (More on that soon.)

star cruise offer

As such, rather than attempting to give an up or down “worth it” proclamation, we’re going to put Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser into context relative to other Disney and real-world destinations. Along with each comparison, we’ll offer our personal preference–which we’d rather do again, and would recommend to someone who hasn’t done either.

Note that the math isn’t perfect on any of these. Actual costs of the alternatives range from around $4,400 to $6,200. This shouldn’t be an issue, because Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser doesn’t charge a flat-rate fee. A lot of reporting has called it a $5,000 experience, which is because that’s (roughly) what Walt Disney World advertises as the starting rate ($4,809) for the off-season. Opening month prices haven’t deviated from that by too much.

star cruise offer

Since you can’t price out Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser without calling and dealing with a multi-hour hold time on the phone, we don’t yet know what peak season rates are around Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve. My guess is that they’ll end up being a lot more than $5,000 for a party of two.

Other unknowns is whether discounts will be offered for Annual Passholders, Disney Vacation Club members, and other select guests during the off-season when bookings might be lower. Alternatively, will prices quickly increase if most voyages sell out at the current price points. We hesitate to make any predictions, as this is incredibly supply-constrained, but also incredibly niche.

With all of that out of the way, here’s how we’d compare various Disney and real-world destinations to a stay at Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser for those who have not done the respective experiences. It should go without saying, but this is an imperfect exercise. There’s no way to precisely account for discrepancies in seasonality, discounts, or airfare (this is especially true with the international destinations, which can vary wildly).

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser v. 8-Night Eastern Caribbean Cruise

For the same price as Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, you could choose from a variety of one-week or longer itineraries aboard Disney Cruise Line’s legacy ships (e.g. all but the Disney Wish). Among the more approachable options for many Americans will be the various Caribbean sailings. We’ve done a couple of these, but always of a shorter duration.

With that in mind, I would choose Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser over even the lengthier Eastern Caribbean cruise. As with so much of the titular question and these comparisons, this is going to vary highly from person to person. The biggest reason for my choice is that Galactic Starcruiser offers a wholly immersive experience, and while good, the entertainment aboard DCL doesn’t even begin to touch this–even 7 nights’ worth as compared to 2. I’m also far less keen on the Caribbean than other destinations.

Conversely, Sarah would choose the cruise–but it would be a close call. She enjoys the standard DCL programming more than I do, and also would like to explore some of the ports of call on this itinerary.

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser v. 7-Night Norwegian Fjords Cruise

Both of us would choose the Norwegian Fjords cruise over Galactic Starcruiser. We did Disney Cruise Line’s Norway itinerary a few years ago (albeit at a deep discount due to booking last minute) and it was one of the best trips we’ve ever taken, Disney or otherwise. It also felt surprisingly “Disney” (beyond just the ship), as we visited numerous destinations represented in Epcot’s World Showcase and that were the real world inspiration for  Frozen .

For me, neither of these first two comparisons are close calls. I’d choose Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser without hesitation over the Eastern Caribbean itinerary, and the Norwegian Fjords option would be an easy pick over Galactic Starcruiser. If anything, this should demonstrate that all of these comparisons are highly personal. You may have zero interest in Norway, but a strong desire to see the Caribbean.

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser v. 8-Night Tokyo Disneyland & Japan

We’ve spent significant time in Japan, doing month-long Airbnb stays in Kyoto for around $1,200 total . That’s not really a relevant comparison here, as most families considering 2 nights at Galactic Starcruiser aren’t going to consider 30 nights in Japan as a viable alternative.

With that said, Tokyo Disneyland plus Japan is a great comparison here because that trip would offer a high-caliber level of service, attention to detail, and immersion. As noted elsewhere, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser feels like “old school” Disney…in many of the same ways as Tokyo Disneyland. In addition to superior service, maintenance, entertainment, etc., the Tokyo parks are also less expensive, with cheaper ticket, monorail loop hotel, and food prices. (We joke that all of this is “subsidized” by Duffy merchandise, which is ridiculously expensive.)

For us, there’s absolutely no contest–Tokyo Disneyland and Japan win in a landslide. We’ve been  pleading with Walt Disney World fans to visit the Tokyo parks for years . Anyone with the means should prioritize that over Galactic Starcruiser unless they are hardcore Star Wars fans who don’t really care about theme parks.

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser v. 9-Night Disneyland Paris & France

While we love Disneyland Paris, it is most certainly not “old school” Disney. It’s the most mismanaged resort complex in the world, and is a great place in spite of itself. Similarly, France is not particularly renowned for its high-caliber of service. It’s a different culture, and you take the good with the bad, just like anywhere. (We have zero issues with French culture or service standards, but you might. Check out “ Is Disneyland Paris Right for You? ” for more insight.)

We would both choose Disneyland Paris plus France over Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser. Admittedly, this is less about the Disney side of the ledger than with the Tokyo Disneyland comparison below. Paris is one of our favorite cities in the world and we’d spend the bulk of our time there. With that said, a first-timer could easily do several days at Disneyland Paris. If you’re the type of fan who collects coffee table books about Imagineering or the design and architecture of the parks, Disneyland Paris is an absolute treasure trove.

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser v. 4-Night Disneyland (Deluxe Accommodations)

For around the same cost as Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, you could stay at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa for 4-nights and do Disneyland and Disney California Adventure for 5 days. The flagship Grand Californian has its own entrance into DCA and is like a more luxurious version of Wilderness Lodge. (They’re actually quite different thematically, but the core architecture invites that obvious comparison.)

The similarity between Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser and Disneyland Resort is that both are similarly lower-stress. We wouldn’t call either “laid back” (to the contrary, both can be exhausting), but neither are on the same level as the core Walt Disney World experience. That alone invites the comparison.

As far bigger fans of theme parks than Star Wars, we’d pick Disneyland in a heartbeat. If you’ve yet to visit Walt Disney’s  original magic kingdom, it’s something every Disney fan should do.

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser v. 5-Nights at Walt Disney World (Moderate Accommodations)

Whereas the prior examples are aimed at first-timers to those respective destinations, both of these Walt Disney World comparisons apply to repeat visitors. This apples to oranges comparison is for a simple reason: this blog’s primary readership is Walt Disney World fans. In other words, people who have visited the Florida parks but are less likely to have been to Disneyland and beyond.

If you’re planning a first-time Florida vacation, the following does not apply to you. Walt Disney World is a rite-of-passage destination for a reason. For us “old-timers,” it’s easier to compare today’s guest experience to the superior one of two years ago, or take for granted just how envelope-pushing Walt Disney World is–like Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, except more mainstream. If you don’t have the burden of knowledge, so to speak, about what’s missing or compromised, you will still almost certainly be blown away by Walt Disney World.

With that out of the way, we used the calculations in How Much Does a Walt Disney World Vacation Cost in 2022?   I redid the math in light of recently-released promotions, and found the numbers didn’t differ too much given actual resort availability (which is limited) and price increases in the last few months.

star cruise offer

Obviously, this comparison is relevant since both Galactic Starcruiser and Moderate Resorts are located at Walt Disney World. Despite that, the two still differ significantly–an interactive adventure is not the same thing as a theme park with rides, and each will appeal to different people.

With that said, the biggest question from our perspective is whether the standard Walt Disney World trip can deliver something as consistently enjoyable as Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser. Don’t get us wrong, we love Walt Disney World. But reader feedback in the last few months makes us wince, and not because you all are particularly cringeworthy. It’s because the baseline guest experience can be hit or miss right now.

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser does not have that. Again, this is old school Disney. The level of service is impeccable, with guest needs being anticipated and everyone treated as if they’re special. Just like the parks, it can be exhausting and isn’t a “vacation” in the traditional sense of the term, but it’s not  stressful  like Walt Disney World can be currently.

Honestly, this one is a toss-up. We are well-versed in visiting Walt Disney World, making it relatively stress-free for us since we can beat the crowds with ease. (We’re also able to operate on minimal sleep, which is incredibly advantageous at Walt Disney World.) This is a double-edged sword, as being well-versed in Walt Disney World also means it’s not as novel to us, whereas Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is. On balance, all of that makes it impossible for us to answer. It’s an incredibly close call, which alone should speak volumes.

star cruise offer

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser v. 3-Nights at Walt Disney World (Deluxe Accommodations)

Basically, this is the same comparison as above. There are two key differences here, though. First, it’s two nights shorter and only one longer than the stay at Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser. Second, it includes a Deluxe Resort stay rather than one at a Moderate.

With this comes the implicit assumption that guests desiring a shorter trip but more well-appointed accommodations are looking for luxury. Although Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is absolutely not a luxury resort, it is a luxurious overall experience with greater attention to detail and service. It’s more individualized and less mass market, which presumably gives it greater appeal to that type of guest–even though it is, yet again, absolutely unlike the archetype of a luxury hotel.

In this scenario, it’s an easier call–Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser. Even on the resort side, Deluxes at Walt Disney World aren’t really luxurious, and those guests will have the same theme park experience (and accompanying headaches) as everyone else. To get the true white glove treatment in the parks, you’re looking at spending up to $850 per hour for a VIP tour on top of everything else. In other words, a day at Walt Disney World might end up costing as much or more as 2-nights in Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser. Obviously, that’s not an apples to apples comparison, but literally none of this is.

Was Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Worth It For Us?

Maybe? Even now, we have mixed feelings about it. We’ll put it this way: we felt incredibly satisfied by our time aboard the Halcyon and are glad we did it. So I guess, yes, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser was worth it for us. A total cost of over $3,000 for the two of us (after splitting the the room with another couple) for 2 days of immersive entertainment, quality food, superlative service, incredible attention to detail, and the most envelope-pushing experience we’ve had at Walt Disney World in years.

All of that makes us happy that we did Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser. Part of that might be that it felt like we were part of something special, witnessing first hand Imagineering swing for the fences with an ambitious but quirky experience.

star cruise offer

However, I’m not sure that’s the same as saying Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is worth that high cost. It’s fair to say there are splurges we all make that bring us joy in the moment, but maybe we look back on with the “clarity” of hindsight and realize that, objectively, the money could’ve been spent better.

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser was more money than what we’ve spent on anything in recent memory. During the moment-to-moment action, we had zero regrets. Immediately after leaving the Halcyon, we were still on cloud nine, feeling a sense of euphoria and energy from what we had just been a part of. If you asked me then whether it was worth it, I would’ve given an emphatic “YES!” in response. It’s only upon ruminating on it for over a week that results in this more measured response.

star cruise offer

We also feel more comfortable with the cost because we were able to reduce the expense by sharing a room. (Doing it with another couple also greatly enhanced the voyage, and relieved us of some “interactivity pressures.”) Not everyone is going to be willing or able to do the same.

Had we paid $5,000 for the two of us, neither of us would’ve felt Galactic Starcruiser was worth it. That’s just us, and that’s how we feel with more careful consideration and reflection, removed from the actual experience. It also comes from the perspective of that $5,000 coming at the opportunity cost of other travel we could do throughout this year. (Hence the above comparisons.)

star cruise offer

To that end, we are not in a rush to do Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser again. Even with more story options that we’d love to explore, we feel satisfied with how our voyage and personal adventures, or whatever you want to call them, played out. I’m incredibly curious about what we did not see, but not “drop another few grand” curious. Maybe I’ll feel differently in 6 months or a year, especially if story elements have been tweaked or off-season discounts are offered. For now, that price-barrier outweighs what would otherwise be a repeatable experience.

This assessment could also vary considerably if our demographics differed. Kids are unquestionably the biggest wild card, and this really goes for “children of all ages.” If your kids are too young to actively participate or your group wouldn’t “buy into” the story elements, the value simply is not here. If viewed as a passive Star Wars cruise on land, Galactic Starcruiser won’t even come close to measuring up for your family–do something different.

star cruise offer

Conversely, if your party is full of impressionable and imaginative minds, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser could be more memorable and formative of an experience than anything in Walt Disney World’s theme parks. (You know how some kids remember the resort pools more fondly than any rides? This feels like it could be that times one-hundred.)

Obviously, we can’t offer an armchair assessment of your children or you–but if we had kids in the ‘sweet spot’ age range of around 7-14 years old who were forming an interest in Star Wars, many of the above comparisons go out the window. We’d book Galactic Starcruiser even if our personal preferences lied elsewhere.

star cruise offer

At the end of the day, that’s the tricky thing with assessing whether Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is worth it. Beyond it simply costing a lot, which presents an unfortunate barrier to entry for many middle class families, there are a ton of other considerations that might make it a good or bad option for a lot of other parties. It’s impossible for us to give a simple and concise answer to the titular question (hence all of this rambling).

About the only other thing we can add is that, from our perspective, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser comes very close to being the best conceivable version of whatever this hard-to-define thing is. Not everyone will love it, but the target audience will absolutely adore it. Assuming for the sake of argument that something like this could ever be worth $5,000 (a bold assumption), Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is the version of that thing.

I know I’m late to comment, but want to say this is probably the best article I have come across on this. I think it is unfortunate it is priced so high and out of reach like many. Disney did this with Aulani in Hawaii, also. Keeping in mind that the entire Disney model is based on repeat trips, not a “one and done” in order to have future revenue, I don’t think they are priced for the return crowd. once those with the income do this once, will they really want to come back at that price, or will they seek out other experiences of similar cost? (I really liked the comparison to other Disney resort properties). If the demand drops off, I could see the cost dropping by 25% which might bring it into that sweet spot for attracting new travellers, and for repeat visits. Or, if they combine with a really, really low price for adding on 5 days at a WDW resort hotel to make a seven day package (e.g. 50% off room rate plus discounted meal package). At their current price point, their saving grace is that it is still new, and it is low capacity. but is it profitable and sustainable in the long run? time will tell.

I have noticed that the dates do not seem to be selling out for the Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser on Walt Disney World’s website. One article I read, claims that Walt Disney World is having trouble selling them. I realize that may just be one person’s spin on it, so I was wondering what your take on that is, Tom. Do you think they will struggle to fill the resort? Will that cause a change in the experience and the pricing? I would like to try it some day, but after this review, I have decided not to make it top priority. I am a big fan of WDW and Star Wars, but I may focus my attention elsewhere for a while. I will admit though, if the Starcruiser does not sell out as expected, it would provide a rather satisfying answer to Bob Chapek’s “pricing power” comment.

' src=

Did the room feel too small for four adults?

' src=

This is an amazing, well-thought out analysis. Thank you for your work! I was reading previous comments about whether you are given a wardrobe or not, and it got me thinking. We are almost in Westworld territory are we not? Yes, this is a premium Star Wars experience for those who can, and want to pay–but what other similar, different genre experiences are out there for the creating?! This is both exciting and scary. I think Walt would be all over this. Kudos to the Imagineers and Castmembers. I’m thrilled that this level of Imaginnering is happening. I probably won’t travel aboard the Starcruiser soon, as I have a teenager who has yet to see Europe–and that’s a priority, but to know this level of immersion exists is exciting.

Analogy: weddings. People spend Thousands. 10, 20, more even. For a single day. Some people can afford it. Some go into debt. Most maybe can cover it, but would be better set up for their new life together using money for down payment on a house, beginning of a retirement account, or a healthy savings. Everyone has their own threshold for what’s ridiculous, or worth it. We can debate over the value of the memories made on a backyard BBQ wedding vs the Ritz. If it’s “for my friends and family” or “only doing it once” makes spending more necessary. Our family has no plans for a Stracruiser trip. We didn’t have plans for a Disney cruise either. But we found an incredible value a few years ago, and LOVED IT. So I appreciate all Disney’s options being there for ‘someday’.

As long as they are maintaining or exceeding the old school magic of even 2 years ago. Letting Disney off the hook, coasting on the fumes of old goodwill, will never be a value. But that’s another topic.

' src=

I need to know about that month long Kyoto AirBNB for $1,200 more than I need to hear the Galactic Starcruiser! I need you to book all my trips.

“If … your group wouldn’t “buy into” the story elements, the value simply is not here. If viewed as a passive Star Wars cruise on land, Galactic Starcruiser won’t even come close to measuring up for your family–do something different.”

Thank you for this. My teens are 16 and 18, and I could see either of them doing this with friends at some point (both are interested in DCP, so maybe during that. Ha.) but for the 4 of us it would be a nightmare. We are all pretty introverted, but apart from that, 3 out of 4 of us are incredibly self-conscious. As in Prime Time Cafe is too awkward for us. I may have started to hyperventilate a bit just reading your narrative of your experience. Ha. Thanks for providing such good information and thoughts.

' src=

Is anything Disney “worth it”? You are paying a surcharge for the Disney name for anything you do. You do it because if you want to experience Disney, there is no other choice.

' src=

Great report as usual – and I wholeheartedly agree it’s not a one size fits all answer….

Please note: We live 12 hours away and since flying costs roughly between 800-1000+ it’s just easier/cheaper for us to drive to Orlando, even with ridiculous gas prices. For us, that makes anything on the East Coast likely to be more strongly considered. Would we love to go to many of places you mentioned, yes, but the flights for 5 usually scare us away.

My 17 year old son would take offense to leaving him out of the sweet spot. He and his 14 and 8 year old brothers have been talking about this since we surprised them with the idea at Christmas. Coincidentally, we had a 7 night Eastern DCL cruise booked for the same week, for nearly a year at this point. But the family of 5 tax got us (limited choice in stateroom types) and that was actually $2K more then the Starcruiser. When asked repeatedly which they would prefer they hands down chose Star Wars. When shown the price difference and clearly explained the night difference they still chose Star Wars. Dad as a fellow Star Wars nerd was only happy to oblige. So I cancelled the cruise and am already strategizing if we spent X on this, what is getting cut/adjusted from the rest of Spring Break. We are beyond thrilled for this opportunity. We realize just how few months we have left with the oldest before he leaves the nest. Excuse me as I go cry in a corner.

' src=

When Walt Disney opened his park he wanted it to be affordable for the average family. Increasingly Disney has been creating a class system in the parks that I feel gets away from its core values and is bordering on corporate greed. Spare me your comments on how they are a publicly traded company. They could have made an experience that was more affordable to middle class families and choose not to intentionally. Its great you and all of these other bloggers got to go and use it as a tax ride off but it will still be out of reach for 80% or more of guests. I wish the stories were more about how a family company is saving their best stuff for the more well off families. I think the glare of the Halcyon is blinding those who cover Disney to see what is really happening.

' src=

I totally get what you’re saying but I disagree that they could have made this affordable for the average family. An “affordable” version of this is a Star Wars themed hotel without the entertainment. They could – and should – do that. But that’s not even close to what’s being offered here. There simply is no such thing as an inexpensive version of this experience. A 100-room hotel filled with state of the art technology, staffed by actors who are working 12 hour days, was always going to be super expensive. And adding rooms wouldn’t have helped because they would’ve needed to hire more actors to keep the cast to guest ratio similar to what it is now. Otherwise, it would ruin the intimacy that is integral to the experience. The cast members remember your name and backstory and use it in your interactions with them. How could they do that if there were 4,000 guests instead of 400? I think if Disney priced this “fairly” it would still be at least $3,000 per trip during the off-season instead of $5,000. A little more affordable, yes, but still out of reach for most working folks. So, really, the question becomes, “Should this experience exist for those who can afford it or should no one get to experience it because it’s not affordable for all?”

' src=

Exceptionally well-said, Brent.

' src=

I’ll add that Club 33 was Walt’s idea. More exclusive experiences have always been part of the Disney brand and the Starcruiser is just the latest.

' src=

Ummm… if one thinks that the actors working at any Disney property are making beaucoup bucks, you’re sorely mistaken. The profit margin for Disney is astronomical on this venture – provided they can fill the house 50% of the time. They planned on it not filling up – that’s why you’re paying through the nose. It’s an old luxury hotel trick – charge more for services that are seasonal. And this is a fiscally seasonal venture. Only the very wealthy can afford it – they will probably only see it once – so there is a built in wall that the hotel will face. Either the prices will come down (along with the services) or it will close eventually. I also heard they slashed the budget for the hotel two years ago during the Pandemic so many of the original ideas had to be scrapped. Which I think is obvious in the reviews. 6K for two nights? Nope I’m sorry – the summer stock actors who know your name aren’t getting big checks from that big bill.

' src=

EXCELLENT Arrested Development reference. Absolute perfection the way you grooved that in there. Bravo, sir.

' src=

Dang, I’m one of the cringey commenters I think, so here we go: If anyone is a party of 3 and needs a fourth to help split their stay, I am game, just know that 1) As Tom might phrase it, I haven’t seen a star war, 2) I am wee and can curl up at the foot of a bed or bunk, if need be, 3) I suffer from less flatulence than most people my age, and 4) I don’t snore but might sleepwalk into a cuddle (safe to push away without waking). Contact me if it’s possible to make friends in the Disney chat.

Stargazing Cruises

The starry night sky is lost to city dwellers. Only the light from the Moon, a few planets, and a number of bright stars can piece the glow of a city’s light-polluted sky. To see the stars, you have to get away and travel to a dark-sky site. But that can be challenging. The site could be several hours away, you might need to camp overnight, and you’ll have to hope that the sky doesn’t cloud over once you’re set up, thereby wasting your drive into the country. Fortunately, there is a better way—take a stargazing vacation on a cruise ship.

Stargazing at sea has a long history, one that’s directly tied to navigation. During ancient times, knowledge of the constellations and bright stars played a key wayfinding role when sailors ventured out of sight of land. The Minoans, who lived on the island of Crete between 3,600 BC and 1,400 BC, used their knowledge of the sky to help them navigate the waters of the Mediterranean. At about the same time, the Polynesians were using the stars to guide them as they sailed from island to island across the vast Pacific Ocean. In all cases, these ancient mariners used the positions of the constellations, and the rising and setting points of certain bright stars, to ensure they stayed on course during the night. During the past 1,500 years or so, sailors in the Northern Hemisphere had a handy celestial guide—Polaris, the North Star or pole star. The height of the pole star above the northern horizon equals the latitude of the observer, making sailing east or west along lines of latitude reasonably easy for Viking, Spanish, and Portuguese navigators.

Today’s sailors have satellites, GPS, compasses, and other modern devices to help guide them across Earth’s oceans. Even so, it’s fun to stand near the bow of a ship, contemplate the dark, star-filled night sky, and imagine what it was like to navigate the ocean thousands of years ago. A stargazing cruise can take you back to those ancient times, with no consequences if you don’t know your stars or constellations!

A stargazing cruise is one of the most enjoyable ways to see the stars. No need to drive to, or camp at, a remote dark-sky site. Once you’re on board, you unpack in your cabin, and your floating hotel becomes your mobile stargazing base camp for a week or so. Meals are provided, there’s usually entertainment or informative talks each evening, and there are excursions. On small expedition ships sailing in quiet waters, some day trips may involve a Zodiac ride to shore so you can discover the local flora and fauna. Other excursions are on the sea itself, experiencing whales up close and personal, as well as watching for dolphins, sea lions, and other forms of aquatic life. There are also water sports off the boat itself—scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking and so on. You can relax or participate in these activities as much (or as little) as suits you. While many of these activities apply to most small-ship cruises, stargazing is an evening event not usually included on a regular voyage.

When a ship is at sea, the only light anywhere comes from the ship itself. On a stargazing cruise, the captain will dim as many of the ship’s lights as is legally permissible. On the ocean, the night sky is incredibly dark. The stars, constellations, and even the Milky Way shine forth, much as in ancient times.

To help you make the most of our stargazing cruise, TravelQuest’s trip astronomer prepares you beforehand by describing the stars and constellations you’ll be able to spot that evening, weather permitting, of course. The ship is in motion, so using a telescope onboard isn’t practical. Instead, we encourage clients to bring binoculars for stargazing and, of course, to birdwatch and check out other wildlife during the cruise.

From the decks of our cruise ship, our astronomer will lead observing sessions of the spectacular night sky, outlining the constellations, identifying the bright stars, and pointing out where to aim your binoculars. Away from city lights, we see the unspoiled splendor of our Milky Way galaxy, the amazing celestial dome of stars, and many remarkable sky sights that are too dim to be seen in light-polluted city skies.

Stargazing from a Cruise Ship

TravelQuest specializes in astronomy-themed excursions. So it’s not surprising that we offer stargazing from a cruise ship. Every year we plan for a stargazing cruise, combined with another ocean-based activity such as whale watching. For stars and whales, sailing the Sea of Cortez in the spring is one of our favorite destinations.

We also combine different types of cruises with stargazing. In Norway, we take the Hurtigruten coastal ships up the coast of Norway, each evening watching for the appearance of the northern lights. When the lights are not visible, our trip astronomer leads stargazing activities from the deck of the ship. And on solar eclipse cruises, we try to include several evenings on the ship dedicated to stargazing, often from the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

If seeing a dark, star-filled night sky from the deck of a cruise ship appeals, contact TravelQuest to learn about either our next stargazing cruise, or any of our upcoming cruises that include a stargazing component.

These 3 lesser-known cruise lines offer amazing voyages on sail-powered ships

Gene Sloan

There is nothing quite as magical — or romantic — as a cruise on a sailing ship.

To stand on the deck of a vessel topped with dozens of billowing sails, propelled through the waves by the power of the wind alone, is to go back in time to an earlier age of travel, when crossing the world's oceans was as adventurous as it was challenging.

It's an experience that's all about the feeling of the wind in your hair, the lean of the vessel (known as the heel) as it's pushed by the wind and the sway from the waves (which is actually smoother than what you get on a motor ship).

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

In contrast to what you'll find on so many motor-powered ships, cruising on a masted ship is about the simple thrill of traveling across the sea and not about all the many attractions you'll find on board.

Only a handful of small cruise brands — so small that you might never have heard of them — offer trips on sailing ships. Here, we look at the three biggest players in this niche subset of the cruise industry.

Sea Cloud Cruises

If it's an authentic, old-style sailing experience you want, then Sea Cloud Cruises is the line for you. The Germany-based company operates three large sailing ships where the sails are unfurled by hand, just as they were on sailing ships centuries ago.

On the biggest of these three vessels, the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit , 18 deckhands scurry high into the rigging on sea days to manually untie and prepare the sails, an amazing sight. Unveiled in 2021 , it's a full-rigged, three-masted sailing ship of the sort that hasn't been common on the world's oceans for more than a century.

Related: Why Sea Cloud Spirit is a sailing vessel you'll want to try

Sea Cloud Cruises' two other vessels — Sea Cloud 2 and Sea Cloud — are smaller but offer a similar show as the sails are set by hand the old-fashioned way. The former is a 23-year-old, three-masted barque propelled by 23 sails (five fewer than Sea Cloud Spirit); the latter is a 93-year-old, four-masted barque with 30 sails and a storied past.

Now configured to carry 64 paying passengers, Sea Cloud was originally the private yacht of Postum Cereals heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post and her husband, the famed financier E. F. Hutton. At the time, the vessel was the largest private yacht in the world. It later served the U.S. Navy as a weather ship during World War II, after which it became the presidential yacht for the Dominican Republic. It only began sailing as a cruise vessel in the 1980s.

If you have money to spare, you can still book Post's opulent private quarters on Sea Cloud, now its owner's suite. It'll set you back around $5,000 per day per couple. Her husband's slightly smaller quarters are also available to book at a similar rate.

Post, the wealthiest woman in the U.S. during her lifetime, notably also built Mar-a-Lago, the massive estate in Florida that is now the official residence of Donald Trump.

Sea Cloud Cruises is the most all-inclusive and upscale of the three brands listed in this story, with pricing to match. Expect to pay nearly $1,000 per person per day or more for many sailings.

Sea Cloud Cruises' three vessels offer a diverse array of sailings in the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, the Canary Islands and Morocco, the Caribbean or along the west coast of Central America.

Windstar Cruises

star cruise offer

Founded in the 1980s, Windstar Cruises got its start as a sailing ship line. While it now operates traditional motor-powered ships, too, voyages on sailing ships are still a big part of its business.

Three of the Seattle-based brand's six vessels — Wind Spirit, Wind Star and Wind Surf — are sailing vessels, and they all offer a similar yacht-like, small-ship experience.

Two of the three vessels (Wind Spirit and Wind Star) are particularly intimate, measuring 5,407 tons and carrying just 148 passengers with every berth full.

Related: The 2 types of Windstar ships, explained

The line's third sailing vessel, Wind Surf, is nearly three times the size at 14,745 tons. It's one of the biggest sailing ships in the world (only a sister vessel that sails for Club Med is bigger). Wind Surf carries 342 people, an enormous number for a sailing ship.

star cruise offer

Unlike on the vessels operated by Sea Cloud, the sails on Windstar's sailing ships aren't unfurled by hand in the old-fashioned way but by the push of a button from the bridge. It's a fully automated system that is much more modern, if less dramatic.

Still, the experience of slicing through the waves by the power of the wind alone on Windstar ships is as glorious and romantic as it is on the Sea Cloud ships.

Windstar Cruises is less all-inclusive and pricey than Sea Cloud but still offers a relatively upscale experience. Its dining program is done in partnership with the food-focused James Beard Foundation, which also brings James Beard Award-winning chefs to the ships regularly for food-themed itineraries.

For an extra $89 per person per day, passengers can also make the experience more all-inclusive with included Wi-Fi, unlimited beer, wine and cocktails, and gratuities (three things that aren't included in regular fares).

The line's three vessels typically spend nearly all of their time sailing in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean or along the west coast of Central America.

Star Clippers

star cruise offer

Like Sea Cloud and Windstar, Star Clippers operates three sailing vessels that are among the biggest and most elegant sailing vessels in the world.

The belle of the ball at the line is Royal Clipper, a stunning five-masted ship that is billed as the largest square-rigged ship in the world. Its enormous array of 42 sails has a sail area of 56,000 square feet — significantly more than the sails atop any of the Sea Cloud or Windstar vessels. (Only Sea Cloud Spirit comes relatively close with a sail area of 44,100 square feet spread across 28 sails.)

Built to resemble Preussen, a legendary tall ship of the 19th century, the 24-year-old Royal Clipper shares the spotlight at Star Clippers with two smaller sister vessels, Star Flyer and Star Clipper.

Carrying 166 passengers apiece, the smaller vessels were designed to resemble the speedy clipper ships of the 19th century, which were known for their narrow profile and large sail area. Each vessel has a sail area of 36,000 square feet spread across 16 sails, a large amount for the size.

star cruise offer

When it comes to the setting of sails, Star Clippers vessels offer a level of old-style authenticity that is in between the ships of Sea Cloud and Windstar. Like on Sea Cloud vessels, the sails are pulled into position by a team of deckhands using hand power and winches to tighten the "sheets," or ropes.

Unlike on Sea Cloud vessels, the deck hands don't climb high into the rigging to untie and prepare the sails for winching. That part is done automatically at the push of a button from the bridge, as it is on Windstar vessels.

In one key difference, though, Star Clippers lets passengers harness up and climb into the crow's nest of its vessels — a thrilling experience. Just be prepared for your knees to go a bit wobbly as you get to the top; it's way up there.

Star Clippers sailings are the most affordable option among the three sailing brands, in part because the onboard experience is less all-inclusive and upscale.

The three Star Clippers vessels mostly operate sailings in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands, the Caribbean and along the west coast of Central America.

Bottom line

It's still possible to get a taste of what traveling the world's oceans was like in the days before motor power. Three small cruise companies — Sea Cloud Cruises, Windstar Cruises and Star Clippers — offer voyages on large sailing ships that are as majestic as anything that has sailed the seas in centuries past.

Complete List: Here’s What Happened to the Star Cruises Fleet

  • March 15, 2023

SuperStar Aquarius

With the sales of the SuperStar Aquarius and the SuperStar Gemini in late 2022, the entire Star Cruises fleet has had its fate sealed.

Here’s what happened to the ships operated by the cruise line before its collapse:

SuperStar Aquarius Year Built: 1993 Capacity: 1,529 guests Location: Alang, India Fate: Scrapped

In November, the SuperStar Aquarius became the latest cruise ship formerly owned by Star Cruises to be sold to a scrapyard.

Renamed Arius, the 1993-built vessel spent several months laid up in Sri Lanka before departing on its final voyage to India – where it’s currently being dismantled .

SuperStar Gemini Year Built: 1992 Capacity: 1,472 guests Location: Alang, India Fate: Scrapped

The former SuperStar Gemini also ended up beached for scrapping in November. Like its sister ship SuperStar Aquarius, the 1992-built vessel spent several months docked in Sri Lanka before heading to India.

Renamed Gem, the former Norwegian Dream is now being recycled at the Alang Shipbreaking Yard , with its building materials and fixtures being sold off or repurposed.

Star Pisces Year Built: 1991 Capacity: 1,384 guests Location: Alang, India Fate: Scrapped

In mid-2022, the Star Pisces became the second cruise ship of the former Star Cruises fleet to be sold to a scrapyard.

One of the company’s original vessels, the cruise ferry ended its 31-year sailing career after being beached at India’s Alang Ship Breaking Yard in July .

The Taipan Year Built: 1989 Capacity: 64 guests Location: Singapore Fate: Sold for further service

In May 2022, the Taipan became the only cruise ship in the former Star Cruises fleet to find a new operator.

Previously being used for charters and incentive cruises in Southeast Asia, the 32-cabin mega yacht was acquired by OM Ships , a German religious organization who plans to transform it into a missionary ship and floating bookshop.

SuperStar Libra Year Built: 1988 Capacity: 1,494 guests Location: Aliaga, Turkey Fate: Scrapped

The SuperStar Libra was also sold for scrapping in 2022. After ending its public operations in 2018, the former Star Cruises vessel arrived at the Aliaga Ship Breaking Yard in May .

Before ending its sailing career, the 1988-built cruise ship spent its last years serving as a floating hotel at the MV Werften – a Genting-owned shipyard in Wismar, Germany.

Work from a cruise ship: Virgin Voyages launches season pass aimed at remote workers

star cruise offer

Virgin Voyages will help take remote work to the next level later this year.

The adults-only cruise line will offer a Scarlet Summer Season Pass on its Scarlet Lady ship, allowing guests to take four back-to-back cruises – without using all their vacation days. Travelers can book consecutive Mediterranean sailings between June and September at a discounted rate.

“No longer does working from home mean being tied to a desk or home office and eating leftovers for lunch,” Virgin Voyages CEO Nirmal Saverimuttu said in a news release.

What is the best time to take a cruise? We broke it down by region.

“With our latest WiFi upgrades, Virgin Voyages can now offer our Sailors the chance to see the world while working from a daybed at The Dock (outdoor lounge) and sampling Mediterranean mezzes, then hopping off the ship in between calls to make the most of our incredible ports of call.”

Wi-Fi is already included in the fare on Virgin cruises, but passholders will get the line’s Premium Wi-Fi at no additional cost (though passengers don’t have to be working to take advantage of the pass).

What are the terms of the Scarlet Summer Season Pass?

Travelers can choose from one of four predetermined windows, each made up of four cruises:

  • June 9-July 7
  • July 7-Aug. 4
  • Aug. 4-Sept. 1

There are no blackout dates, and the cruises will feature stops in Cannes and Ajaccio in France; Civitavecchia, Italy; Ibiza and more, though exact itineraries vary by sailing date.

How much does the Scarlet Summer Season Pass cost?

The pass starts at $9,990 for two passengers in a cabin. The price is a “savings of up to 30% compared to travelers booking four independent voyages,” Virgin said in the release.

The pass is good for a Central Sea Terrace cabin, and the cost also includes food from more than 20 eateries; gratuities; wash and fold laundry service; a daily $10 coffee credit per cabin; priority booking for dining and shore excursions; access to Richard’s Rooftop – normally only accessible suite guests – and more.

Travelers can fill out a form on Virgin’s website or contact their travel advisor to book.

12 Top Cruises on Small Ships

From wildlife viewing in the remote polar regions to magical sunsets in the Indian Ocean, these ships offer unforgettable voyages.

Even if you're sailing in chilly Antarctica, cruising on a small ship offers comfort and coziness.

If you are feeling a sense of wanderlust and ready to explore off-the-beaten-path destinations in far-flung corners of the world, consider booking a small ship cruise. These luxury mega-yachts, expedition-style vessels and sailing ships can visit tucked-away harbors, exotic locales and pristine beaches that larger ships can't reach. And if you opt for a cruise on a rigged sailing vessel, there's nothing more romantic than watching the sun set into the ocean while the wind fills the sails of a tall ship at sea.

Smaller ships offer an intimate onboard vibe where the experience is highly personalized with a higher crew to passenger ratio – and where you'll get to know many of your fellow passengers. Smaller ships are often more fuel-efficient and eco-friendly than traditional cruise ships, using either wind power or the latest technologies. With the addition of new or existing cruise lines entering this market along with other lines investing in upgrading older ships, there are many more vessels in these smaller ship classes to choose from when considering your cruise options.

If you're seeking an adventure of a lifetime – whether to meet the penguins in Antarctica, people- and yacht watch in glamorous ports of call in the Mediterranean, or go island hopping in paradise in Hawaii – then plan your voyage to set sail on one of these small ships.

Star Clippers: Royal Clipper

Inspired by the legendary 1902 Preussen, the first five-masted ship, Royal Clipper was launched in 2000 as a true sailing vessel at 439 feet in length with 54,000 square feet of sails across 42 sails. With five fully rigged masts, the ship is recognized in Guinness World Records as the largest square rigger in service today.

Modeled after the historic clipper ships, Royal Clipper travels under full sail – and by wind power – for up to 80% of its voyages. When the vessel does navigate under power, the energy-efficient engines only use high-quality, low-sulfur gas oil, earning Star Clippers the International Air Pollution Prevention Certificate for all three of its clipper ships.

The ship can accommodate as many as 227 passengers in 114 staterooms, along with 106 crew. While on board, guests will enjoy 19,000 square feet of open teak deck, three swimming pools and hidden balconies on either side of the bow, where you can view wildlife like dolphins swimming alongside the ship. You can also relax in the bowsprit net overlooking the ocean and keeping an eye out for whales. For the more adventurous sailor, climbing the mast to 75 feet above the water affords unforgettable ocean views from your perch in one of the passenger crow's nests. Other features of Royal Clipper are its three-story atrium, trilevel dining room, and unique spa and health club with underwater portholes called the Captain Nemo Lounge.

The ship's seven-night Windward Islands itinerary sails round trip from Barbados with stops in Antigua , Martinique , St. Kitts, Îles Des Saintes and St. Lucia. You'll even have an opportunity to sail alongside one of the line's sister ships and another tall ship – Star Flyer – to the island of Dominica . Royal Clipper's longer itineraries include several Grand Voyages: The 19-night cruise from Cannes in France to Lisbon in Portugal, for example, calls on other ports in France, Italy, Spain, Gibraltar and Morocco.

Silversea Cruises: Silver Wind

Launched in 1995, Silver Wind was Silversea's second of four vessels that the line built for the ultra-luxury market. This ship underwent a significant upgrade in 2018, followed by another refurbishment in 2021 that included an enhanced ice-class hull. This new addition allows Silver Wind to be one of the most adaptable ships in the fleet, sailing from the polar regions like Antarctica to sunny island climates in the Caribbean and cruising picturesque shorelines along the Mediterranean Sea.

Silver Wind measures about 515 feet in length and has 149 all ocean-view suites, more than 80% of which boast a private veranda. The ship carries 274 guests and 239 crew and features elegant public rooms, including lounges for gazing out at the ocean or watching onboard entertainment. There's also an upscale bar, shipboard boutiques and a spa.

Dining is a highlight, with four venues spanning international cuisine such as Italian, regional specialties and seasonally inspired menus. For an evening under the stars, The Grill features fine steaks and seafood or vegetables that guests can cook at the table on 400 degrees Celsius lava stones. After dinner, spend time chatting with fellow passengers at Connoisseur's Corner, where you can sip cognac and enjoy a cigar.

Silver Wind offers an epic 20-night expedition cruise from Tromsø, Norway, to Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, visiting various destinations in Iceland as well as remote regions and glaciers in Greenland. For a warmer voyage, the 10-night Puntarenas to Guayaquil itinerary takes you from Costa Rica to Ecuador in South America, with stops at the remote Darien Jungle in Panama, the Utría National Natural Park in Colombia and several ports in Ecuador, including the city of Guayaquil.

Sea Cloud Cruises: Sea Cloud

Exterior of Sea Cloud ship on the water.

Courtesy of Sea Cloud Cruises

Built in 1931 as a private yacht for Wall Street broker Edward Francis Hutton and his wife Marjorie Merriweather Post, an American socialite and philanthropist, this legendary windjammer maintains the elegance of a time gone by.

Originally named Hussar, the 360-foot Sea Cloud has a fascinating history – while the ship started as a private yacht, it later became a floating palace of diplomacy and then a warship. Today, Sea Cloud accommodates up to 64 passengers in 32 outside cabins and carries about 60 crew. The ship also boasts 29 sails, with the height of the main mast towering 184 feet above the water.

If you've never been on this type of vessel, cruising under full sail on a tall ship is unlike any other experience. Sea Cloud does not rely on motors (though they are installed just in case), allowing the wind and sea to determine the ship's course whenever possible, guided by the skills and seamanship of the crew for navigation. This setup provides an opportunity to teach the art of sailing to the passengers. The captain of Sea Cloud and guests prefer to cruise under full sail, which is the lure of sailing on a windjammer. Life on board the ship is intimate and relaxed – just as you would find on a private yacht.

Amenities on Sea Cloud include a lido bar and deck and a restaurant serving cuisine inspired by the destination, which features local products, fresh fish and regional wines.

One of Sea Cloud's top itineraries, Between Lifestyles and Nature's Paradises, sails for seven nights from Monte Carlo, Monaco , to the Spanish island of Palma de Mallorca , with calls on less visited ports along the Mediterranean coast in southern France like La Ciotat and Collioure. You can also join the jet-setters in St. Barts with a front-row seat from your sailing ship for the Bucket Regatta. This 10-night adventure includes two days in the French West Indies island of St. Barts and other picturesque ports of call in the Caribbean.

Atlas Ocean Voyages' first luxury expedition ship, World Navigator, launched in August 2021. The quiet alternate hydro-jet propulsion system allows for up-close viewing of marine animals and other wildlife.

The 98 beautifully appointed staterooms and suites feature upscale amenities like Egyptian linens and a menu to personalize your selection of a pillow. Some accommodations also have Juliet-style or walk-out balconies, and certain suites come with butler service. For dining options, you'll find Portuguese-inspired Porto, which is the main dining room, or the New York-style 7-Aft Grill for steaks and seafood. Passengers can also opt to have lunch poolside or enjoy light bites at the Dome Observation Lounge, which offers panoramic views of the sea.

Other ship amenities include three bars and lounges, the SeaSpa by L'Occitane, an auditorium, a mud room, a pool and two hot tubs, a boutique and a fitness center. To wind down after a day of exploring destinations in far corners of the globe, convene with other passengers to relive the experience during Àpres Sea.

For the ultimate bucket list adventure, book the nine-night round-trip expedition from Ushuaia, Argentina, to the southernmost continent. Highlights of this venture to Antarctica include navigating the Drake Passage; embarking on water safaris to Deception Island or Yankee Harbour; encountering wildlife like penguins, seals and whales; and even camping on land overnight. For a less adventurous itinerary, history enthusiasts will appreciate the 12-night Western Europe voyage sailing from Hamburg in Germany to London , with an overnight in Amsterdam and ports of call in cities like Antwerp and Bruges , Belgium; Plymouth, U.K.; and Honfleur, France.

Windstar Cruises: Wind Star

Dining at the Star Grill on the Wind Star.

Michel Verdure | Courtesy of Windstar Cruises

When it first launched in Le Havre, France, in November 1985, Wind Star was the world's largest sailing vessel and the flagship for the line. While this schooner may not be the largest tall ship on the seas today, Wind Star is an elegant four-masted sailing yacht and the cruise line's namesake. Since its launch, this ship has been through a few renovations, with the most recent one in 2018. The 360-foot vessel features 73 deluxe ocean-view staterooms that accommodate 148 passengers, and it can carry 101 crew. Four masts stand at 204 feet tall, and six triangular Dacron sails, which are self-furling and computerized, make up a surface area of 21,500 square feet.

As with other Windstar vessels, you'll find the same casual elegance on board this sailing ship. Guests will get to sail away to the music Windstar traditionally plays while raising the flag during every port departure – Vangelis' song "1492: Conquest of Paradise," which is the musical score to the movie of the same name. The culinary program on Windstar's fleet is in partnership with the James Beard Foundation, so dining is a real treat. The three restaurant venues on Wind Star include Amphora, whose contemporary, international menu was created by James Beard-affiliated chefs. The romantic Candles offers an alfresco dining experience with grilled steaks and skewers, while the Veranda is the ship's casual breakfast and lunch buffet with outdoor seating.

Other onboard amenities include a lounge, the Yacht Club Café, a pool bar, a salon and spa, a boutique, a library, a fitness center, a water sports platform and an open bridge where you can enjoy a chat over coffee with the captain.

Treasures of the Greek Isles is a seven-night voyage that sails round trip from Athens to several Greek islands, including Mykonos and Santorini . This itinerary also includes a stop in Kusadasi, Turkey, where you'll be able to visit the fascinating ancient city of Ephesus. For a South America adventure to transit the Panama Canal and explore destinations in the region like rainforests, reserve the seven-night Costa Rica & Panama Canal voyage.

Built in 2022, Viking's new Polar Class 6 ship, Viking Octantis, is 665 feet in length and accommodates 378 guests in 189 staterooms and 256 crew. The purpose-built expedition ship boasts more indoor and outdoor viewing areas than many other expedition vessels, providing guests with up-close views of some of the most incredible scenery in the world. The energy-efficient design of this ship and the line's other expedition vessel, Viking Polaris, exceeds the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) requirements by 36%. The cruise line is also recognized for receiving one of the first highest-level certifications for quiet ship propulsion, minimizing underwater noise pollution.

Cruisers familiar with Viking Ocean Cruises' ships will recognize familiar spaces and dining venues such as The Living Room, The Explorers' Lounge, The Nordic Spa, Manfredi's, The Restaurant and The World Cafe. New spaces on Viking Octantis include The Aula, a panoramic auditorium designed for lectures and daily briefings, and the adjacent Finse Terrace. This outdoor lounge area sits just above sea level and boasts recessed, heated couches and lava rock "fire pits." Passengers will also find the industry-first in-ship marina, The Hangar, where guests can easily embark and disembark the ship, and three pools offering varying temperatures with an inside-outside passage. In addition, all staterooms feature Nordic balconies that convert from a sunroom to an alfresco viewing area.

For a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, book the 12-night Antarctic itinerary sailing from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia, Argentina. This expedition includes the Drake "rite of" Passage, scenic sailing around Cape Horn and wildlife viewing in the icy waters of the "White Continent." For U.S. travelers interested in staying closer to home, the seven-night Great Lakes Explorer departs Milwaukee for Thunder Bay in Ontario, Canada. Cruisers will enjoy a stop in Mackinac Island in Michigan, scenic sailing along the St. Mary's River and transit from the U.S. into Canada through the Soo Locks.

Emerald Cruises' luxurious 360-foot superyacht, Emerald Azzurra, launched in May 2022. The boutique ship carries just 100 passengers and is designed for cruising the waters of the Mediterranean, Adriatic Coast and the Red Sea. Its sister ship, Emerald Sakara, will debut in 2023. On board Emerald Azzurra, you can expect to be pampered by 68 crew members while soaking in the sun poolside or relaxing indoors during a day at sea.

The 50 spacious modern staterooms and suites, most with balconies, offer spectacular views of off-the-beaten-path destinations and smaller ports and harbors. The ship also features several dining, bar and lounge venues; quiet spaces for relaxing or reading a book; a wellness area; a hot tub with a view and an infinity-style pool; a boutique; and a fitness center. The marina platform on the ship's stern offers paddleboarding, snorkeling and other water sports activities.

The seven-night Gems of the Arabian Peninsula sails from Doha, Qatar, to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. This cruise calls on Sir Bani Yas Island and Abu Dhabi , United Arab Emirates, as well as two ports in the country of Oman. For unforgettable ocean and island views and a vacation in paradise, book the seven-night Tropical Charms of the Seychelles, sailing round trip from Victoria, Mahé , which is the capital of the Seychelles .

Lindblad Expeditions: National Geographic Endurance

Launched in July 2021 as one of two new polar vessels and a sister ship to National Geographic Resolution (November 2021), this extraordinary vessel can explore deeper and further into the Earth's polar regions. National Geographic Endurance is the first new polar build in the company's 50-year history, and its name honors the ship of renowned Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton. The elegant Scandinavian-inspired design also features the patented X-Bow, offering eco-friendly benefits and a smoother, quieter ride.

National Geographic Endurance is 407 feet in length and has 69 spacious staterooms with large windows or balconies to accommodate up to 126 passengers. The ship also carries 112 crew. Unique onboard amenities include the first polar art exhibit at sea, curated by environmental artist Zaria Forman, and the first igloos at sea. Guests can arrange to spend an evening under the stars in these glass domes, which are available to reserve on a first-come, first-served basis.

Passengers can also enjoy one complimentary evening at the Chef's Table, sustainable cuisine during their voyage, a lounge and bar area, outdoor infinity-style hot tubs, a yoga studio, saunas with a view of the sea, and state-of-the-art facilities for presentations and films. Every expedition also has a National Geographic photographer and a certified photo instructor and video chronicler.

For an unforgettable rendezvous with nature, book a 10-night cruise called Land of the Ice Bears. This adventure sails to the best place in the world to view polar bears: the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard in the Arctic Ocean. In addition to many opportunities to see those amazing animals, you'll also encounter walruses, reindeer, arctic foxes and fur seals. Another incredible journey for the extreme adventurer is the 35-day Epic Antarctica sailing. This expedition will venture to remote West Antarctica and explore the sub-Antarctic islands of New Zealand and Australia, traveling to destinations where possibly few – or even no – humans have set foot before.

UnCruise Adventures: Safari Explorer

Built in 1998, Safari Explorer is 145 feet in length and one of UnCruise Adventures' four Safari-class ships in its expedition-style fleet. Nicknamed "the Bulldog," this ship transports passengers to wild and remote areas that larger ships can't navigate. The 36-passenger yacht was recently renovated with interior refinishes, touch-ups and upgrades. There are just 18 cabins and 18 crew.

The lifestyle is casual on board, and guests have access to three decks with a library, dining room, rooftop sun lounge and exercise equipment. You'll find common areas on the main deck such as the salon, bar and wine bar. When it's time to hit the water or go ashore, the vessel is equipped with expedition gear, including kayaks, inflatable skiffs, paddleboards, snorkel equipment and more.

In the summer months, Safari Explorer sets off in search of humpback whales in Alaska and spends winters island hopping in Hawaii. The seven-night Hawaiian Seascapes sailing cruises to four islands, including stops in Molokai, Lanai , Maui and the Big Island of Hawaii . There are two itineraries in Alaska. The seven-night Alaska Glacier Cruise itinerary sails one way from Juneau to Sitka through the northern passages. For an extended expedition that includes wilderness areas with even more opportunities for wildlife and whale viewing, book the 12-night Cruise to Alaska voyage from Seattle to Juneau.

Ponant: Le Commandant Charcot

Ponant's first high polar expedition vessel, Le Commandant Charcot, launched in September 2021. The 492-foot-long ship is eco-friendly and powered by liquefied natural gas with the latest innovations and technologies. Le Commandant Charcot is also the first luxury hybrid electric polar exploration vessel.

All of the 123 staterooms and suites have a private balcony or terrace. The atmosphere for the 245 passengers on board is much like that of a private yacht, given an extraordinary ratio of passengers to crew with 215 crew members. Two culinary options, gastronomic restaurant Nuna and casual dining concept Sila, are part of a collaboration with Ducasse Conseil and Michelin-starred chef Alain Ducasse; the menus are designed by the renowned French chef. Guests can enjoy complimentary French wine, Veuve Clicquot Champagne and Ladurée macarons throughout their voyage.

You'll also find beautiful public spaces, a boutique, a theater, expedition rooms and a promenade deck where you can access the bow. Not to be missed is the wellness area, which is a partnership with Biologique Recherche and features amenities like a 14 degrees Fahrenheit snow room with fresh powder snow, a sauna and an indoor pool. On the pool deck, passengers can enjoy a sunroom, a heated outdoor blue lagoon, a giant fire pit, an outdoor bar and the Blue Lagoon bar.

Le Commandant Charcot sails to the farthest points in the Northern and Southern hemispheres, including Antarctica and the North Pole. The 24-night Northwest Passage cruise takes guests from Reykjavik in Iceland to Nome, Alaska, and features polar activities like kayaking between the ice floes, snowshoeing, ice fishing or even exploring with a naturalist guide by hovercraft. The 15-night Geographic North Pole expedition sailing from Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen, in Norway pushes the limit of sailing to the northernmost point in the world. Le Commandant Charcot is the only passenger ship able to reach the geographic North Pole.

Aurora Expeditions: Greg Mortimer

Australian-owned Greg Mortimer is a 341-foot-long purpose-built expedition ship, and the first passenger ship designed with the Ulstein X-Bow. This state-of-the-art design offers environmental benefits such as producing fewer emissions and requiring less fuel. The unique bow design also provides a smoother cruise experience when crossing rough seas like the Drake Passage en route to Antarctica. In addition, the ship's Rolls Royce dynamic stabilizers contribute to the vessel's stability and lower its fuel consumption.

The vessel was built in 2019, features 79 cabins with ocean views – 85% of which have balconies – and can accommodate an average of 132 passengers and 74 crew. Onboard amenities include bars and lounges, the main dining room, lecture facilities, a library, a mudroom to store wet expedition gear, a spa, a sauna and a gym. The ship also has hydraulic viewing platforms offering unobstructed views of the local marine and wildlife, as well as 15 Zodiac boats that launch from four platforms.

With Greg Mortimer and its new sister ship, Sylvia Earle, Aurora Expeditions travels to wild and remote destinations around the world. Popular itineraries include its nine- to 23-day Antarctica voyages, navigating icy waters on the 17-day Northwest Passage expedition from Canada or on the 11-day Iceland Circumnavigation cruise, which sails round trip from Reykjavik.

Tom Cruise makes Mission: Impossible 8 crew bold offer to meet filming deadlines

Tom Cruise has taken it upon himself to ensure Mission: Impossible 8 stays on schedule in England with a fittingly-Cruise offer to the crew.

Deadlines are normal for any line of work and the film industry is no different, with multiple deadlines across multiple departments to bring films together in time to meet release dates. Some deadlines can be stricter than others, though, and it could be the case for Mission: Impossible 8 as Tom Cruise has seemingly taken it upon himself to keep filming on schedule with a fittingly-Cruise offer to keep it on schedule.

Mission: Impossible 8 has been busy filming in England , near the city of Derby, but has reportedly run into some possible hiccups due to closures and roadwork being conducted on the nearby M25 motorway, according to Yahoo News. In an effort to avoid delays, Cruise has reportedly taken it upon himself to help transport cast and crew to and from set by offering to fly them via helicopter over the roadwork.

A helipad has reportedly been prepared in the Battersea district of southwest London for these flights.

Mission: Impossible, Tom Cruise

Some fans online were quick to point out Cruise's reported solution to the closures was befitting the Mission: Impossible series and the actor's many famous stunts across the franchise's history. It also helps Cruise is a licensed pilot who regularly pilots planes and helicopters both in his personal life and in his films.

Additionally, Cruise has been very hands on with the Mission: Impossible series as one of the series' principle producers since the original 1996 film. One infamous example of this became public while filming Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning , when a recording of Cruise berating a crew member who tested positive for COVID-19 and continued working was released online.

Originally billed as Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part 2, the film's subtitle was dropped and a new subtitle has not been announced for the eighth film in the franchise. The film picks up shortly after the events of Dead Reckoning and will follow Ethan Hunt as he works to hunt down the artificial intelligence dubbed The Entity before it can fall into the wrong hands.

Mission: Impossible 8 is scheduled to release in theaters on May 23, 2025.
