7 years ago. Save. There is nothing that says you have to visit a destination just because it is popular. It took me a while to visit Alcatraz after I lived here and many locals haven't gone there. I've enjoyed visiting Alcatraz, but there are certainly other things to do in San Francisco. If you're not interested, then skip it.

For our return visit, we purchased Alcatraz Island tour tickets over a month in advance (you can purchase tickets up to 90 days in advance). Alcatraz is a big island and you have to climb a steep hill to get to the prison. There is a shuttle you can take to get up and down the hill. So at least that part will be easier. The behind-the-scenes tour adds a lot of territory to the tour so the walking is at least doubled. Stairs to the dungeon.
