Arriving from Other Parts of Italy

Tuscany is well-served by Italy’s extensive train network. The high-speed trains from cities like Rome, Milan , and Venice make getting to Tuscany both quick and convenient. Florence’s main station, Firenze Santa Maria Novella, is a major hub connecting Tuscany to the rest of Italy.

Getting Around Tuscany

Public transportation.

Trains: The train network in Tuscany is quite extensive, connecting not only the major cities but also smaller towns. They are generally punctual, affordable, and efficient.

Buses: For some of the smaller towns and villages, bus is the only public transport available. Although they can be less predictable than trains, buses can get you to places trains can’t reach.

Renting a car can be an excellent option if you wish to explore the countryside or visit vineyards at your own pace. Do remember that driving in Italy requires an International Driving Permit along with your regular driver’s license for non-EU citizens. Also, many city centers in Tuscany are limited traffic zones (ZTLs) and are camera-controlled. Driving into these zones without a permit will result in a fine.

Taxis are readily available in cities and larger towns. Uber operates in Florence and is another convenient option for getting around.

Best Time to Visit: Tuscany is a year-round destination, but the ideal times to visit are between April and June, and September and October when the weather is comfortable and the countryside is at its most vibrant.

Language: Italian is the official language. However, English is widely spoken in tourist areas, hotels, and restaurants.

Currency: Euro (€) is the official currency of Italy.

Safety: Tuscany is generally safe for tourists, but like any other tourist destination, be aware of your surroundings, particularly in crowded places.

Electricity: Italy operates on a 220V supply voltage and 50Hz. The power plugs and sockets are of type F and L.

It’s the birthplace of the Renaissance, and home to world-class museums such as the Uffizi Gallery and the Accademia Gallery, where you can admire Michelangelo’s David. The city also has a rich culinary scene, with countless trattorias serving classic Tuscan cuisine. Florence is an ideal base for day trips throughout the region, thanks to its central location and excellent transportation links.

Famous for its medieval cityscape and the historic Palio horse race, Siena is a must-visit. The city’s heart is the Piazza del Campo, a shell-shaped square that hosts the Palio twice every summer. The Siena Cathedral (Duomo di Siena) is another highlight, featuring intricate Gothic architecture. Siena’s historical center has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its preserved medieval city planning and architectural splendor.

Frequently Asked Questions about Wine Tours in Tuscany

What kinds of tuscany wine tours and wine tasting experiences are there.

Tuscany offers a rich variety of wine tours and tastings that cater to all tastes and preferences. For instance, there are full day private tours from Florence, led by a knowledgeable sommelier, offering the chance to visit three different wineries and enjoy an authentic Tuscan lunch. For those looking to combine scenic drives with wine, consider the excursion that pairs a Fiat 500 tour with a visit to a 15th-century wine estate. Alternatively, you can delve into Siena’s surrounding vineyards on a small group tasting tour that educates your palate with the help of a sommelier. For those seeking a unique countryside experience, a horseback riding tour in the Tuscan countryside lets you unwind at a country resort with a full Tuscan lunch and local Chianti wine. These are just a few examples of the range of experiences Tuscany has to offer. Each tour provides a unique way to explore the region’s world-renowned wine culture. To learn more and book a wine tour that suits your preference, please check our detailed guide.

When is the best time of year for a wine tour in Tuscany?

The best time to visit Tuscany for a wine tour largely depends on your personal preferences, but there are a few peak periods that are particularly popular. Spring (April to June) and Fall (September and October) are often considered the ideal times for a Tuscan wine tour. The weather during these seasons is typically mild and pleasant, and the landscape is at its most vibrant – with blooming flowers in spring, and changing leaves in the fall. Fall is also the time of the grape harvest (known as “vendemmia”), which can be a fascinating process to witness. Some wineries even allow visitors to participate in the harvest. Summer (July and August) in Tuscany can be quite hot, and many Italians go on vacation in August, which means some wineries might be closed. However, the region is still beautiful during this time and the wine tours are certainly still operational. Winter (November to March) is the low tourist season in Tuscany. While the weather can be cooler and wetter, there are fewer tourists, making it a good time to visit if you prefer to avoid crowds. Regardless of when you choose to visit, it’s always a good idea to check with individual wineries or tour companies in advance for their operating hours and to book your tour.

What is the main wine region in Tuscany?

The most renowned wine region in Tuscany is the Chianti region, famous for producing Chianti and Chianti Classico wines. It’s characterized by its idyllic rolling hills, historic vineyards, and scenic villages. The Chianti region is situated between Florence and Siena, making it conveniently accessible for tourists and wine lovers. However, Tuscany boasts several other notable wine-producing areas. For example, Montalcino, located south of the Chianti region, is renowned for its Brunello di Montalcino wines. Nearby, Montepulciano produces the famous Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Further west towards the coast, you’ll find the Bolgheri region, known for its superb “Super Tuscan” wines, a term referring to high-quality wines that don’t adhere to traditional Italian wine regulations but have nonetheless achieved worldwide recognition. Each of these areas offers unique variations in climate, soil, and winemaking traditions, contributing to the diversity and richness of Tuscan wines.

Montepulciano is a captivating hilltop town filled with magnificent palazzi, local Tuscan charm, excellent wines, and enthralling views of Valley of Chiana ( Val di Chiana ).

Montepulciano’s history goes back to ancient times as an Etruscan city named Nocera Alfaterna with vestiges of its ancient past still visible today. During Medieval times, Montepulciano was controlled by Florence and Sienna.

Tuscany Wine Tours from Rome limousine Tours RomeCabs

While Tuscany is celebrated for its exceptional wines, Montepulciano was crowned “King of all Wines” in the famous poem, “ Bacchus in Tuscan y” written by 17th-century poet Francesco Red i.

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano  ( Noble Wine of Montepulciano ), was first documented as far back as 789 AD, making it one of Tuscany’s most ancient wines. Since the 15h century, this classic red was considered a sophisticated wine for the table of nobles and preferred by Italy’s aristocracy and royalty.

Pope Paul III ’s cellarman, Sante Lancerio , described Montelcino’s wine as “ very perfect and suit to the taste of gentlemen ”.  Montepulciano’s wine earned its title of “ Noble ” ( Nobile   in Italian) in 1787, a title that still holds firmly to its glory and history. Learn more about the history and characteristics of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano below.

Following your visit to Montepulciano,  you will once again join your driver to journey through the Tuscan countryside to your next destination on this Tuscany, Castles, and Wine Tour: Montalcino .

Visit MONTALCINO - the birthplace of Brunello wine

Montalcino is another majestic hilltop town in Tuscany that boasts spellbinding views of the surrounding Valley of Orcia ( Val d'Orcia ) where many vineyards and olive groves produce the local Brunello wines and silky olive oil. Like Montepulciano, Montalcino’s rich history also extends back to the ancient Etruscans who thrived in this region for centuries until they were conquered by the Romans.

Montalcino’s name derives from its ancient name Monte Ilcinus due to the oak trees that once grew in this area.  It wasn’t until the early 9th century that the first written documents that refer to its modern name “Montalcino”.

Today Montalcino is well regarded for its prestigious Brunello di Montalcino made from the Sangiovese grapevine (also called Brunello grapevine) as well as its historic, artistic, and architectural treasures. The hilltop town is dominated by a magnificent 14th-century fortress that was built over previous fortifications and served as the last bastion of resistance of the Sienese Republic against Medici’s expansion and conquests.

Montalcino’s historic streets are lined with enticing shops and boutiques that sell local crafts and products, delightful cafes, tempting restaurants, and wine shops.  While in Montalcino, you have free time on your own to enjoy a tasty lunch at a local restaurant in town, window shop, or sample and purchase some delicious Brunello di Montalcino wines at the local wine shops.

Brunello wine is a newer “invention” created by Clemente Santi in the mid-1800s to diversify local wine production at this Il Greppo Tuscan estate.  His careful wine experiments produced a rich deep reddish-brown hue “ bruno ” colored wine that was christened Brunello.

Brunello wines are rich medium-bodied reds with pronounced tannins, high acidity, and subtle flavors that can be described as vanilla, wild berry, red plum, spice, chocolate, and sweet tobacco.  The wine’s flavor changes with age, and Brunello is meant to be aged for years making it a more expensive and exclusive wine enjoyed by wine enthusiasts.  Learn more about Brunello di Montalcino wine below.

After your visit in Montalcino, you will join your driver for a short-distance drive through Montalcino's wine country to the enchanting Castello Banfi for a relaxing wine-tasting experience at the castle's elegant wine shop.

CASTELLO BANFI - the majestic wine estate

Nestled amidst 7,000 acres of picturesque vineyards and olive groves south of Montalcino’s wine-producing region is the historic stone castle Castello Banfi , the family-owned vineyard estate and winery that produces some of the region’s most renowned wines.

WINE TASTING IN TUSCANY: Price, information:

** Wine tasting fees at local wine shops in Montepulciano and Montalcino vary depending on the shop.   Some shops such as Ercolani in Montepulciano offer complimentary wine tastings, while other shops may offer them at a price or free with the intention to purchase.  Inquire with the wine shop you visit for their wine-tasting fees.

Wine-tasting prices at Castello Banfi vary depending on the wine options selected which generally include 4 different wines , and wine-tasting prices listed on their wine bar menu range from approximately 16 Euros to 46 Euros per person, with spirits at approximately 15 Euros per person, and Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Balsamico Etrusco at approximately 8 Euros per person.  Wine Tasting is available only at the wine bar inside The Enoteca (the wine shop). HOW IS VINO NOBILE DI MONTEPULCIANO MADE

What is Vino Nobile di Montepulciano

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano wines are generally made from a minimum of 70% Sangiovese and other grape varieties such as up to 20% Canaiolo and other local varieties such as Colorino and Mammolo . The addition of these other grape varieties renders Montepulciano’s wines a little softer when young. Many producers also make their top Nobile wines from 100% Sangiovese grape .

The Sangiovese grape is traced to ancient Roman times and the name Sangiovese is derived from Latin for the “blood of Jove ” (the ancient Roman god, Jupiter).

The aging of Vino Nobile of Montepulciano requires a minimum of  2 years, and 3 years for riserva (of which 12 months are in oak barrels). This aging period provides the wine with balance and roundness. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano has also been exalted to the prestigious DOCG status - Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita , guaranteeing its exceptionally high-quality standard.

This ruby-red wine can be described as dry, smooth, medium-bodied with tannic textures, and balanced with a cleansing of high acidity. There is a notable bouquet of cherry, plum, strawberry, and dark berries, with subtle floral notes of rose and violet with hints of vanilla, cinnamon, spice, white pepper, and earth.

Learn more about the history and characteristics of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano .

WHAT IS BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO

What is Brunello di Montalcino wine

Brunello di Montalcino was created in the 1860s and it quickly became an award-winning select red wine for its powerful flavors, distinctiveness, and inclination towards longevity that set it apart from other Sangiovese grape wines.  The success of this exquisite wine is credited to Ferruccio Biondi Santi who, in the late 19th century, built on the previous invention and created the formula for Brunello made purely from the Sangiovese Grosso grape characterized by a strong robust structure.

Brunello di Montalcino was also the first wine to be granted the coveted Italian DOCG status in 1980 ( Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita ).

Making Brunello di Montalcino is a carefully controlled process. According to production disciplinary, after pressing, the juice from the grapes is left in contact with the skins for an extended period in order to extract the characteristic flavors, tannins, and dark “ bruno ” colors.

Brunello di Montalcino is produced from 100% Sangiovese Grosso grapes and must age a minimum of 2 years in Slavonian oak cask, Frech barriques, or both depending on the producer’s preference as the Slavonian oak barrel imbue the wine with stronger earth and cherry notes and richer tannins, and the French oak barrel allows for more oak flavors and softer tannins with vanilla and sweeter fruits. For reserve wines, the aging requirement is 3 years.

Wine Tasting Tips:

SEE - See the color, depth, and intensity of the wine in your glass.  The color also indicates the types of grapes used or if the wine was aged in wood.

SWIRL -  Swirling aerates the wine and allows oxygen to “open it up” revealing its complexities SNIFF/ SMELL - It’s essential to sniff the wine before tasting it as a wine’s quality can be judged by its aroma. SIP - Take a larger than normal sip and hold it in your mouth for 3-5 seconds to taste the characteristics of the wine’s flavor: sweetness, bitterness, fruitiness, alcohol… SAVOR - The taste doesn’t just stop once you swallow the wine. The finish is the duration of time the essence of the wine lingers and stays with you. A long finish is ideal, especially when the overall taste of the wine leaves you craving another sip.

Tour description

Go beyond the eternal city on this rome to tuscany day trip..

Tuscany is a can't-miss stop on many visitors' Italian itineraries. But trying to make your way there on your own means spending more time worrying about logistics and less time enjoying yourself. On this Tuscany day trip from Rome, we'll handle all the details, including the itinerary and transportation, so you'll be all set for one of the most memorable experiences of your time in Italy.

Explore ancient Tuscan hill towns, both small and large.

Hop aboard your private bus and enjoy a comfortable and picturesque ride to Val D'Orcia, a region of Tuscany most famous for its impressive landscapes. Surrounded by the rolling green hills and twisting roads lined with cypress trees, it will feel like you're in a scene from the movie "Under the Tuscan Sun".

The first stop on our Tuscany day trip from Rome is the beautiful village of Monticchiello. This tiny town makes for the perfect once-in-a-lifetime photo op to kick off your unforgettable day.

From there, it's off to Pienza, which is bursting with artisanal food, wine, and craft stores. Taste the world-famous pecorino cheese at a small business, see beautiful ceramics, and start to learn about typical Tuscan delicacies and regional products.

Sample the best of Tuscany's famous food at a picturesque winery.

The next stop on your Rome to Tuscany day trip is a local family-run winery in Montepulciano. Stroll through the lush vineyards where the grapes are grown and then step into the breathtaking ancient wine cellar with tall arches like a cathedral. Learn about the winemaking process and how the cellar is engineered to maintain a constant temperature and humidity to age the wine. You'll also sit down to a sumptuous pasta lunch featuring seasonal delicacies and the best of what Tuscany has to offer. (And yes, that includes plenty of the region's incredible wine!)

Marvel at a masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance.

Tuscany is famous for its landscapes and architecture, and you'll experience both as you relish some free time to explore the historic town of Montepulciano on your own. Before heading back to Rome, you'll also stop outside the Temple of San Biagio, a gorgeous Renaissance church nestled among the hills just outside the town that will transport you back to the sixteenth century.

With so much to see in this incredible region, stating that we’ve found the best of Tuscany is a bold claim—but one we’re sure you’ll agree with after a delicious day of medieval villages, wine, food, and stunning landscapes. This Rome to Tuscany day trip offers an essential Italian experience that will leave you craving Tuscany long after you’ve returned home.

This was one of the most scenic and informational tours I have experienced in Italy/Europe. The pace of the trip was very relaxing while also fitting in many different experiences. My highlights would be the cheese/vinegar tasting in Pienza as well as the lunch that follows. You also get the feeling that you’re having a unique Italian experience while supporting local businesses and culture. The best part of the tour was definitely our guide, Paris. She had information to share about every aspect of the experience, from the Roman roads and agriculture, as well particularities that make each experience special. She also delivered a considerable amount of information about the history of Tuscany and Italy in general in a very relatable way, which helps the factual and trivial knowledge really set in. I walked away feeling happily full of wine, cheese, and local delicacies AND being much smarter and understanding of general history. This tour was great to get a broad Tuscan experience!

  • macesgirl 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Rome in Limo Saved our Vacation We had a 10 day cruise scheduled in February and booked several of our airport/ cruise port transfers as well as Rome tours and shore excursions with Rome in Limo in the months prior. 4 days before our sailing date, our cruise was cancelled. We pivoted and booked an AirBnB and decided to spend our vacation time day tripping around Italy and exploring Rome. Jany, the booking agent was outstanding with information and ideas over months of planning, and was an absolute gem in helping us pivot and modify our plans when our cruise got cancelled. Nick, was our driver over many days of trips. He greeted us warmly at the airport, escorted us to a beautiful large Mercedes van (which our party of 7 and multiple 6ft+ passengers appreciated) and provided warm and helpful companionship throughout our many times together. We did sightseeing around Rome, a trip down to the Amalfi Coast (Naples, Sorrento, Pompeii), a day trip throughout Tuscany including San Gimignano and wineries). Nick is an expert driver and maneuvered effortlessly through the chaos that is Rome city traffic, and kept us entertained, informed of the sights we saw and offered his services for any questions or help we needed over our extended trip. Our guides were also outstanding…Silvia provided a thorough and expert tour of the Vatican, her personal passion and knowledge were impressive. Guilia provided us a comprehensive and engaging tour of the Colosseum and Palatine Hill sights, taking the time to get to know our family, and exuding warmth and a genuine excitement to share her city’s history with us. She took many family pictures at scenic opportunities along the way, and really made our day. Finally, our guide for Pompeii, Lucio, was also outstanding. Besides revealing the events of the Mt. Vesuvius eruption, he made the site come alive for us, and helped us appreciate the sophisticated engineering, hydraulics, port building and other innovations, as well as the art and culture of the people who made Pompeii their home. Our group was comprised of ages 14, 17, 18, 22, 24, 45, 51. I appreciate the challenge it is to relate to and entertain such a wide range of ages and interests and our kids unanimously enjoyed their first trip to Europe and I appreciate the role Rome in Limo’s team had in salvaging our vacation and helping us make lifelong memories of our time in Italy. Not only is it nice to have a private van driving you around; but more importantly is the tour guide. Our guide, Peter, made our experience so much more enriching. Peter gave us the background and context of all the sites. He also took us to an off-the-beaten path places. In addition to Peter, we had Maximo, as our tour guide for the Vatican. He was hilarious in addition to his deep knowledge of everything Vatican. Highly recommended Romeinlimo Read more Written February 7, 2024

A friend who visited Rome previously gave me the information for the Rome in Limo Tour, so I was happy to see what they had to offer. From the very first encounter, I was extremely impressed. The level of customer service, care, and satisfaction Jany gave me was unmatched. She was so kind and patient as we worked through the plans for my couples trip. We decided to do the 3-Day Rome in Limo Tour. Hands down, the best money spent. We saved time and money and were able to see way more than expected by using their services. There were 4 of us and everyone raved about the locations as well as our tour guides Barbara and Steve. We were VERY pleased with this service and will recommend you book them. Memorable experience with all the pictures to prove it. Thank you so much! Read more Written January 4, 2024

  • CathyL466 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Another great experience!!! We had another great adventure!! I have used Romeinlimo three times and they are top notch. I’m also going back to Italy next June and have tours booked with them already. We had Lucca in Sicily and he was so young and energetic and full of knowledge of his region. He was so fun he also recommended a delicious restaurant off the beaten path in Taormina , which was probably one of our best meals in Italy. Also, a wonderful tasty canolli at Roberto‘s in Taormina. We also went to Castelmola. Cute little town with fun shops and restaurants. In Rome we had Piero which I requested for the second time. So passionate about his country, and it was fun to see an old friend again. We went to Pagnanelli restaurant in Castel Gandolfo, which he had taken us before delicious! What views and the wine cellar is a must. We have been to Rome before and wanted to explore some different sites so he took us to some hidden gems in the area and did not disappoint. We toured with him for two days, visiting the Capuchin monks and the catacombs. We were tired before him. He never would’ve stopped showing us around. Can’t wait to see him again next year. We also booked a airport transfer. The gentleman was very prompt and we got to our airport destination very quickly with all of our many bags. I would always recommend ROMEINLIMO. It’s a fantastic company. They truly care about your experience and also want to keep your business Quote Read more Written November 6, 2023

We did 3 private full day tours-Catania, Naples and Rome. I can not say enough good things about all 3 drivers and the tours . Marcos, Giovanni and Francesco were all amazing. They were professional, friendly and knowledgeable. We saw so much more in the day we had off the cruise ship than if we had done it any other way. They built the day around our schedule and interests. They go above and beyond and Jany makes scheduling via email a breeze. They are extremely communicative and responsive. • shanepL6816TN 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles An amazing experience So let me start by saying the beginning of our trip to Italy was horrible. The airlines, the whole horrible, what you would expect experience. Once we arrived at FCO though, we were picked up by our driver (after having to shift our experience to an evening one, due to the airlines) and it really saved the day!!! Not only did this organization save the day, they set the tone for the rest of the trip. We did a 10 day Med cruise, and at every port (4-5), we utilized this company. EACH and every time, the experience was met with professionalism, knowledge and elegance. We have been home less then 36 hours and we have recommended this company to several friends who will be traveling to Italy soon. I cannot impress the amount of detail and satisfaction we had with this company and the drivers. A true 1st class experience. I would recommend this group to anyone wanting a truly memorable time, in a safe and VIP capacity. Read more Written September 28, 2023

  • Isla H 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fabulous trip to a hidden gem in Tuscany We booked this Alternative Tuscany trip to fill in the gap between disembarking our cruise ship and flying home late evening. It proved to be an excellent experience. Our driver was waiting at the port and after stowing all our bags we set off through the pretty Tuscan countryside to Pitigliano, about 90 minutes away. Our first sight of this incredible hilltop village was a real “wow” moment. The village did not disappoint- one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. Full of amazing architecture, narrow streets ,plenty of places to eat and drink and some lovely shops. We wandered around a while then had a fabulous lunch before heading off to Sorano. It was lovely too but does not have the same appeal as Pitigliano. Our driver Stefano was brilliant and chatted the whole journey with a wonderful knowledge of the history of this beautiful part of the world. We were sad to arrive at the airport after a wonderful day out. Book this tour if you have the time- it is well worth it. Read more Written September 18, 2023

Rome Wine Tasting & Wine Tours FAQ

Yes! While Rome is not widely known as a producer of wine, it offers memorable wine-tasting experiences, both in the surrounding countryside or in trendy enotecas in town.

The best time to visit wineries and vineyards in Italy is during the fall, in the months of September and October, as this is the time of year when the harvest takes place, and there are usually many festivities around it.

In my opinion, the best vineyard tours from Rome for private groups are these:  • Wine Tasting in Frascati Tour from Rome • Frascati Wine Region Tour with Wine Tasting from Rome

The Lazio wine region is the closest wine region to Rome, which is why many wine tours from the Eternal City visit wineries in this area.
