A Guide to Abu Dhabi's Best Islands

Yas Island

Something that many people don’t know about Abu Dhabi , the capital of the UAE, is that the city is actually comprised of several different islands. Located on the Arabian Gulf, some of the Emirate’s main attractions are located on these islands. Each is extremely different from the other, therefore it’s a great idea to find out what the Abu Dhabi islands have to offer in order to make the most of a visit to the city.

1. dalma island.

For those who love history and archeology, Dalma Island is the perfect destination. The island, only 26 miles away for the coast of Abu Dhabi, is one of the oldest inhabited islands in the region. With easy access via ferry or even by catching a flight there, Dalma island is home to its own museum, the Dalma Museum. There’s evidence of life on the island dating back as far as 10,000 years, making it one of the most relevant historical sites in the UAE .

2. Yas Island

Perhaps the most popular of all Abu Dhabi islands is the world-famous Yas Island. It can easily be accessed by car, which is great news for all who visit Abu Dhabi, as it holds some of the main attractions in the city. Yas Island is home to Ferrari World, Yas Viceroy Hotel and Yas Marina Circuit – places which any visitors coming to the capital simply must see. It’s hard to even notice that this is an Island, considering how massive it is.

For all environmentalists out there, Bu Tinah Island is a place to hold close to the heart. The island is the first and largest UNESCO recognized reserve in the region. Bu Tinah Island is home to an endangered species of turtle, the Hawksbill turtle, the island is perhaps the most important in the entire capital. However small, Bu Tinah island has gained global relevance as a marine life sanctuary.

6. Sir Ban Yas Island

Perhaps the most unique island in the capital, Sir Ban Yas Island can only be accessed by air or water. This man-made island is a wildlife reserve, where visitors can actually go on safari and see anything from ostriches to giraffes, with more than 13,000 animals living in its Arabian Wildlife Park. Visitors can plan day-trips to the island, where they can also enjoy water sports, archery and horse riding; or simply stay overnight at the Anantara Sir Ban Yas Island Resort .

7. Al Lulu Island

Seen from the Abu Dhabi Corniche , Al Lulu Island doesn’t have a form of transport to allow public access. However, anyone on a boat can get to the 1,050-acre manmade island. The island has become popular as people for years have speculated what is to come, with even a Disney Resort being rumored to be constructed on the island in the 1990s. Although there’s not much there now, people continue to anticipate what the breakwater to the city’s corniche will bring.

With breathtaking scenery, rich culture, history and amazing attractions, both the man-made and natural Abu Dhabi islands are worth exploring.

Need to unwind or reconnect with yourself? These top-rated islands in the UAE capital are well worth a visit.

ALL ABOUT SCENIC ABU DHABI ISLANDS

While all islands in the UAE capital have unique attributes, some have grown in more popular thanks to the impressive development initiatives undertaken by the government. The upcoming list of Abu Dhabi islands has venues you can visit or consider for property purchases.

Brimming with clubs, restaurants, hotels and tourist spots, Yas Island is the first entry on the list of Abu Dhabi islands. UAE nationals and expats are drawn to residing on this glamorous island, especially in luxury villas. It’s central location also adds to its appeal, with downtown Abu Dhabi less than half an hour away and Abu Dhabi International Airport in very close proximity.

Life in Yas Island is convenient, luxurious and fun. As for filling up that spare time, there is plenty to do on Yas Island . Ferrari World, Yas Marina, Yas Marina Circuit, Yas Mall, Yas Links are just a few of the many attractions. Yas Bay, in particular, is one of the latest additions to the list and is garnering a great deal of interest.

Those visiting Yas Island for vacations or staycation are spoilt for choice. They’ll find luxury hotels in Yas Island, including W Abu Dhabi, Yas Island Rotana, Park Inn by Radisson and more. And foodies won’t be disappointed with the long list of Yas Island restaurants. Whether it be local cuisine or international flavours, the island’s eateries offer an array of diverse culinary experiences.

13 amazing natural wonders you can visit in Abu Dhabi

Get these on your bucket list….

Abu Dhabi is a land of beautifully blended contrasts. Of worlds old and new, of deserts, island networks, and lush green oases set against hyper-modern towerscape, and future-tech enhanced infrastructure. Contained within its borders there are many marvels, but often less accessible, it’s the stunning natural ones can easily be overlooked.

This is a guide to some of our favourite Abu Dhabi natural wonders, and where to find them.

Al Mirayr forests

Pic Credit: @wonguy974 via IG

Just a stone skim away from the beautiful Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara ( geolocation here ), you’ll find the arresting sight of a desert forest, known as Al Mirayr. It’s unlikely to be the largest wooded expanse you’ll have clapped eyes on, but with its juxtaposition to the saffron-hued desert sands around it, it might just be one of the most impressive. You’ll need a 4WD enabled vehicle to get there, and if you fancy extending the wadi roaming, there are plenty more exciting sights to explore in the surrounding sand. For more off-the-beaten-track adventures, check out our guide to some of the best off-road trips in Abu Dhabi .

Al Ain Oasis

If you’re looking for green, Al Ain AKA ‘The Garden City’ is a pretty good place to start.  This 1,200-hectare desert oasis is found in the middle of Al Ain and attained UNESCO World Heritage status in 2011. It contains more than 147,000 date palms, trees bearing mangos, oranges, bananas, figs, and jujube. With its whimsical shaded pathways beneath fractal canopies it’s a place that provides a shuddering contrast to the urban jungle of Abu Dhabi’s cityscape. There’s also an Eco-Centre that offers insight into the conservation efforts at the oasis, and a look back at its history.

Al Ain, open daily 9am to 5pm. Tel: (03)  711 8251 , take a virtual tour at  visitabudhabi.ae

Al Wathba Fossil Dunes

The desert areas of the UAE hold many wonders, but few can compare to the ethereal beauty of  Al Wathba’s fossil dunes . These naturally occurring monoliths are jutting, jagged reminders of the emirate’s storied geological past, having been forged over the past 120,000 years. Found a short distance away from the (also well-worth a visit) Al Wathba Wildlife Reserve, an expanse covering more than 1,700 of the fossil dunes has now been designated as a protected landmark. The Al Wathba Fossil Dune Protected Area now features a visitor centre, a viewing area, an amphitheatre and 7kms of hike-able trails with educational signage explaining the origins and cultural significance of these magnificent sand relics.

Al Wathba Wetland Reserve

A popular resting spot for flamingos during autumn and spring, this note-worthy site can be found beside the beautiful Al Wathba fossil dunes. Known as Flamingo City, it is home to various wildlife habitats, including freshwater and saltwater lakes. The area hosts over 250 bird species, and 37 plant species, as well as a plethora of marine life. The wetland is a popular place for bird watching and even offers two self-guided walking routes to explore the area. To keep the area as natural as possible, there are no cafes so be sure to pack in your reusable water bottles as the walking routes are quite long.

Desert Lakes

There’s a bit of a catch with this pair of entries… Their location is a trade secret (and, well, the second one probably isn’t ‘natural’ is it?). Both images were captured (well before the current drone ban) by the incredibly talented, intrepid photographer, @amarhabeeb . He’s responsible for the discovery of another lisiting a bit further down, but these finds starkly represent what can happen when you follow that pioneer nomad spirit and explore the desert for hidden wonders. Safely of course, it can be an inhospitable place without modern luxuries. If you’re heading out to the wilds, tell someone, go accompanied, go prepared, take more fuel, water and food than you need, and remember there is currently a ban in place for all non authorised drone flights.

Jebel Hafit

Part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Jebel Hafit is Abu Dhabi’s tallest peak, located in Al Ain, and about 90 minutes’ drive from the capital city. There is a campground that offers tented accommodation and pitches for those that wish to bring their own canvas and poles. You can also rent traditional Bedouin-inspired tents; bubble tents — equipped with panoramic windows that are just perfect for star-gazing; and luxury dome tents which come with AC, a TV and, excitingly a telescope. Prices start from Dhs650. Holiday-makers come here to hike, mountain bike (rental available), dune buggy, ride horses and camels and enjoy the rare fresh air (and lack of light pollution) that contributes to the perfect conditions for astronomy. Wonders above wonders below.

You can book your stay now here or by calling (03) 711 8362.

Jebel Hafit Beehive Tombs

Situated at the foothills of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the ancient tombs mark the beginning of the Bronze Age in the Middle East. 5,000-year-old structures and evidence of ceramic vessels and copper artifacts were found here, indicating the importance of maritime trade across the Arabian Gulf even then. You can visit the park’s majestic natural surroundings on a mountain bike, horse, or camel. Discover archaeological and historical remains that tell stories of this unique area’s ancient habitation.

Mangrove Forests

ubail Mangrove Park opened in January 2020 , offering visitors the opportunity to explore one of this region’s most fascinating natural ecosystems. Found nestled on a quiet outcrop of Jubail Island — the mangroves became an instant hit with locals, residents and tourists. It features a meandering 2.3km boardwalk and sits about 20 minutes drive from Downtown Abu Dhabi. Park inhabitants include herons, flamingos, turtles, gazelle, crabs, as well as some more mysterious creatures. There’s plenty of ways to explore this fascinating turquoise expanse including ranger-led, guided boardwalk (from Dhs50), kayak (Dhs100), and e-canoe tours (from Dhs80) of the mangroves.

Jubail Mangrove Park, Al Jubail Island (next to Saadiyat Island), Abu Dhabi, 8am to 7.30pm daily, Dhs15 for adult, Dhs10. Tel: (05) 63032423.  park.jubailisland.ae

Liwa Oasis and Tal More’eb

Found at the northern edge of Rub’ Al Khali (the Empty Quarter), Liwa Oasis is the ancestral home of the Nahyan family and the Bani Yas tribe. The Liwa Oasis area marks out a 100km stretch of desert, where the dark green of date trees cuts a stark contrast against the amber desert sands. It’s all possible thanks to an elevated water table, close to the surface. There are walled areas, reconstructed forts and watch towers and a collection of truly gigantic dunes, including Tal More’eb , at 300 metres high it’s one of the world’s largest.

Found at the eastern edge of Al Jubail Island, close to Zeera Island and across the water from Khor Laffan, this fluvial feature found amongst the mangroves was given the name ‘Plant Lake’ by the individual that discovered it — Abu Dhabi-based photographer, Amar Habeeb (Insta handle: @amarhabeeb ). The stunning depth of green is no Photoshop trickery, it really is that lucid. When the beguiling natural feature popped up on the digital viewfinder of his drone remote, Habeeb recalls immediately thinking “Emerald Green. I couldn’t believe my eyes”. As mentioned above, the private use of drones is currently prohibited in Abu Dhabi, so you’re unlikely to be able to replicate this epic shot any time soon.

Saadiyat Reef

The emirate’s coral reefs are currently subject to a massive rehabilitation project, supervised by the Environment Agency — Abu Dhabi (EAD). Even with the effort in full swing, there are a number of dive sites across the Abu Dhabi archipelago that offer safe and legal access to coral reefs. You can find multiple dive companies offering chartered trips out to locations such as Philippe’s Reef and Saadiyat Reef (weather and numbers permitting), with prices from around Dhs300 for snorkelling and Dhs500-600 for scuba activities. Whilst the variety and vibrancy of the reef’s colour might not match those found in some other more famous dive spots in the world, the marine life you’ll find navigating them, is truly mask-misting. Turtles, for example, are not an uncommon sight.

Abu Dhabi’s  Salt Lakes  took Instagram by storm last year. Bloggers, influencers and the naturally curious headed out to their location near Al Wathba Wildlife Reserve, to capture snaps with the narrow pastel green lakes filled with crystalline lily pad features. You can find the exact location on  Google Maps , but getting there isn’t easy. Take an SUV, take snacks and back up supplies, tell someone where you are going, do not litter, and make sure you’re all fuelled up. We promise it’s worth it.

Shuweihat Island

This beautifully unique island is surrounded by red rocks and erosion-carved cliffs, with pristine beaches. Unfortunately due to littering and mistreatment, making landfall on the island is currently prohibited for the public. However if you do make the trip, you can enjoy the view from a distance.

Greek oasis in heart of Emirates: Fake Santorini in Abu Dhabi to lure luxury travellers

Seeking a luxurious escape anantara santorini abu dhabi retreat is latest entry in the region’s ultracompetitive hotel scene as an homage to the greek island..

Getting to the Anantara Santorini Abu Dhabi Retreat from Dubai involves driving about 40 minutes past natural gas fields, grazing gazelles and a navy base. Once you’re inside the security gates, a cluster of white buildings rises up like it was transplanted from the Cyclades to the Arabian Peninsula. Noticeably missing, of course, are the blue-domed churches.

Greek oasis in heart of Emirates: Fake Santorini in Abu Dhabi to lure luxury travellers (Photo by Twitter/elite_traveler)

The seafront resort, which opened at the end of February, joins a massively competitive hotel market in the Emirates . There’s the ultraluxury complex where Beyoncé broke the internet (Atlantis the Royal), the feat of engineering that cantilevers a massive infinity pool between two towers (One&Only One Za’abeel), the private-island beach club (Al Maya Island Resort), and a lavish desert getaway (Al Wathba). Now, there’s an homage to the popular honeymoon destination of Santorini.

The adults-only property has 22 keys, starting at around $735 a night, but General Manager Rachid Bakas says he expects 50% of the hotel’s business to come from exclusive-use buyouts for weddings, corporate takeovers and other events. Anantara is targeting locals for the most part—weekends are big business—offering day passes from 1,000 AED ($272) which can be redeemed for food or pool-side drinks.

“We have a wedding booked for October for a local family,” Bakas says. “They wanted to go to Santorini for the photos, but the costs, including flights for everyone, meant it made more sense for them to have the wedding here.”

Read more: Why Now Is the Best Time to Go to Dubai and Eat Like a King

The Anantara brand, which got its start in Thailand, is known for its tranquil resorts in Phuket and Bali. Santorini marks its ongoing expansion in the UAE; properties there include the noted Anantara the Palm Dubai Resort and the Eastern Mangroves Hotel at the edge of Abu Dhabi.

Speaking to Bloomberg during a tour in early March, Bakas says the whole design team flew out to Santorini to get ideas for the property’s interiors, and as a result the rooms wouldn’t look out of place in a luxe Aegean resort, with their neutral earth tones and barrel ceilings. Local fashion publications have already held photoshoots using the Greek-inspired resort as a backdrop, he says.

Most of the rooms have terraces or sprawling white-painted patios, ideal places to have a drink and stare at the tranquil seafront. And every room has a sea view, “so no one can come and complain,” Bakas jokes. There’s also 24/7 access to a butler who can arrange snorkeling excursions, beach picnics or other excursions. As it was an overcast day, no one was enjoying the dazzling infinity pool, but it looked tempting. Room categories are named after villages in Santorini—Fira, Oia and Perissa.

The hotel really goes for it with a circular cocktail bar and cigar lounge that’s ancient Greece-themed, complete with “weathered” wall frescoes and light fixtures modeled after warrior helmets. I had a flashback to the 2006 Gerard Butler film 300. It’s a bold choice, but you can’t call it boring.

Lest you forget you’re in the Middle East in 2024, there’s a beautifully tiled hammam in the spa; it’s not trying to look like the bathhouses of ancient Greece. Of the two restaurants, one has a traditional Greek menu and the other features Arabic cuisine.

Santorini is famous for its fiery technicolor sunsets, glimpsed from cliffside mountain towns that hug the edges of its caldera. While the hotel can’t match that drama—same sun, much flatter vibes—the team at Anantara offers a tribute with daily sundowners. Guests are invited to enjoy cups of Greek mountain tea (made from the medicinal herb Sideritis scardica, aka ironwort) while Helios drives off in his chariot, bringing night.

Of course this isn’t Greece, and that’s not really the point. (Nobody at Epcot actually thinks they’re touring the world.) Anantara Santorini Abu Dhabi Retreat is positioning itself as a serene escape for locals from Dubai and other nearby Emirates. The mood is romantic, and on my tour I saw several couples walking hand in hand on the beach. Among all the region’s modernist megaprojects, bumping beach clubs and $14,000-an-hour party jets, there’s now a $735-a-night tribute to one of Europe’s most-loved island destinations.

“Guests will appreciate that this is something a little different in the region,” Bakas says.

Places to visit in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), offers the best of both worlds. While boasting modern marvels, it also has its array of cultural and historical wonders. If you’re heading to this part of the Middle East, count on this guide, which rounds up the top places to visit in Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi’s tourism strategy

Launched in 2021, the Abu Dhabi strategy aims to boost overnight visits to 23 million per year by 2030.  A thriving tourism sector means more employment opportunities. Statista predicts that by 2026, this sector could generate about 56,400 jobs in Abu Dhabi.

On track to sustained growth, the emirate’s airports welcomed 10.26 million visitors in the first half (H1) of 2023. This represents a 67 percent year-on-year (YoY) increase. The number of flights also jumped 36 percent, from 49,919 in H1 2022 to 67,835 in the same period last year. The Zayed International Airport, which began operations in the last quarter of 2023, is also expected to boost Abu Dhabi’s tourism industry with an enhanced passenger capacity that is expected to reach 65 million in the next decade.

Meanwhile, Abu Dhabi hotels accommodated 2.4 million tourists in H1 2023, according to the Abu Dhabi Division of Culture and Tourism. During this time, the hotels collectively generated over AED3 billion.

According to the World Health Organisation, measles – which is most common in children – is a highly contagious and serious airborne disease caused by a virus that can lead to severe complications. It spreads easily when an infected person breathes, coughs or sneezes. Measles vaccination averted 56 million deaths between 2000 and 2021.

“Etihad Airways has been informed by health authorities in Ireland that a passenger has tested positive for measles after the arrival of flight EY045 from Abu Dhabi to Dublin on March 9, 2024. Etihad Airways is following procedures and guidelines specified by the relevant health authorities and as per government guidelines, all close contact tracing will be carried out by the respective authority,” the spokesperson said in a statement to Khaleej Times on Wednesday.

This was the third case reported in Ireland this year so far.

Etihad Airways spokesperson said the safety and wellbeing of its passengers and crew is the airline's number one priority.

Where to go in Abu Dhabi: the 6 must-visit neighborhoods

Feb 15, 2024 • 5 min read

islands to visit in abu dhabi

For beaches, culture, shopping and theme parks here are the best neighborhoods to explore in Abu Dhabi © frantic00 / Getty Images

Made up of over 200 islands, the UAE’s capital is a vibrant city and boasts a whole variety of neighborhoods, each with its own personality.

At the heart of the city is Downtown Abu Dhabi , from where the emirate began to rise after the discovery of oil in the eighties. Newer neighborhoods have been added as it has evolved, with many of them purpose-built for leisure travel. Yas Island is one such spot and it’s a good choice for families thanks to its multitude of theme parks. Beach lovers will want to head to Saadiyat Island, the capital’s postcard perfect locale which also has a healthy side of culture.

Here’s our guide to the don’t-miss neighborhoods of Abu Dhabi.

Best neighborhood for families

On the eastern edge of the emirate, Yas Island is best known for hosting the annual Abu Dhabi Grand Prix – a spectacle that brings F1 cars, super yachts and motorsports fans to town. But the island is action-packed any time of year, as it is home to several theme parks – including Ferrari World , where you’ll find Formula Rossa, the fastest roller coaster on the planet. The world's first Warner Bros–branded theme park is also here, as well as the first ever Warner Bros hotel, where Bugs Bunny is on hand to deliver room service. On hot days, cool off at Yas Waterworld – a mega-sized Emirati-themed waterpark. Evenings are best spent at Yas Bay , the island’s buzzy waterfront promenade lined with unique dining and drinking spots – The Lighthouse and Art Market come recommended.

Saadiyat Island

Best beachside neighborhood

Saadiyat Island is where you’ll find golden beaches backed by impossibly azure waters – it’s so pristine that beachgoers have spotted dolphins frolicking not far from the shoreline. Peppered with luxury resorts, it’s a place for travelers looking to ease into sun-worship mode. If you don’t have the budget to stay on the island, it’s still worth a visit – Soul Beach is open to the public and the Mamsha waterfront promenade is lined with cafes, bars and restaurants – try Ting Irie for boppy beachside Jamaican vibes.

Beautifully manicured with endless swaying palm trees, Saadiyat Island also has culture covered thanks to Louvre Abu Dhabi – a world-class art museum with 12 curated galleries. Elsewhere, the Abrahamic Family House , opened in 2023, is designed to foster understanding between faiths, and the Islamic-art-latticed Manarat Al Saadiyat boasts a busy calendar of arts events, film screenings and workshops.

Best locale for waterfront vistas

Running the entire length of the northwest shore of Abu Dhabi, the Corniche is a bustling spot and one of the few places in the city where there are always people walking, cycling, swimming, and running (yes, even in the height of summer). On the opposite side of the road, several parks and green spaces come alive in early morning or late afternoon when families venture outside to make the most of cooler climes.

Hotels for every budget are dotted along the length of the Corniche – from Al Ain Palace Hotel , the oldest in the city, to the skyscraper five-star St Regis Abu Dhabi . Just beyond, at the tip of Abu Dhabi Island, is Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental  – famed for its gold-dusted cappuccinos – and Qasr Al Watan , the presidential palace that welcomes visitors to learn more about the country’s fascinating history.

Downtown Abu Dhabi

Best neighborhood for a glimpse of the past

Downtown Abu Dhabi is as close as the emirate has to a city centre and the neighborhood is a melting pot of old and new buildings, resort hotels and budget accommodation, shopping malls, restaurants, bars, cafes and cultural spots. It’s a good pick for travelers visiting for the first time who are keen to glimpse what the city was like before all of its gleaming skyscrapers popped up. Qasr Al Hosn is Abu Dhabi’s oldest building and the traditional heart of the nation’s capital, making it a good pick for history buffs.

Downtown is also the place to find cuisine from nearly every corner of the world – from Indian and Pakistani, to Ethiopian, Filipino, Chinese and more; the culinary tapestry reflects the city’s diverse population. Many of the hotels in this part of town are older and some are showing their age, but room rates reflect this so it can be a good pick if you’re looking for a resort stay on a budget.

Al Maryah Island

Best neighborhood for retail therapy

Al Maryah is the place to go for luxury shopping as The Galleria is the city’s swankiest mall. Home to the Luxury Collection, which boasts boutiques from the likes of Tiffanys and Cartier, it’s also the address for several upscale restaurants including Coya , a sister restaurant of the swanky London outpost. But it’s not all luxury focused – high-street stores are also to be found here, and there’s an outdoor weekend market when the weather allows. This is also the financial district , so it's typically bustling during the week but quieter on weekends. Connected to Al Maryah via a bridge is Al Reem Island, a natural island that’s largely residential and is also home to Snow Abu Dhabi – a sprawling indoor snow park where temperatures are always a chilly -2°C (28°F).

Khor Al Maqta

Best as a base for sightseeing

Located between the bridges that connect Abu Dhabi with its outlying islands, Khor Al Maqta ’s most famous landmark is Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Dominating the skyline, the gleaming white marble structure is an architectural icon and a must-visit for travelers hoping to understand more about the country’s Islamic culture.

A smattering of hotels on the mainland bank command front-row views of the mosque, plus private beaches and turquoise swimming pools. Not far from here is Al Qana – an area of the city that’s been redeveloped and boasts the marine-life-filled National Aquarium Abu Dhabi . The surrounding walkways here come alive in the evening as it’s a popular destination for locals heading out for a stroll or a spot of dinner. Almost equidistant from Downtown Abu Dhabi as it is from Yas Island, Khor Al Maqta’s central position makes it a good pick for those hoping to take in several of the city’s neighborhoods.
