Will the zombies bite/touch me?

Your safety is top of mind – we want you to be scared, but not to be in any real danger! The actors will never touch you in any way.

Can I buy tickets at the door or do I have to buy them online?

While tickets are available at the door, we do advise buying tickets online ahead of time. We have a limited capacity for the number of guests that we can host, so buying at the door is never a guarantee.

I know it's all a trick, but what if the zombies actually do attack?

If zombies do attack in real life, we recommend finding several weapons, and travelling to an area that has a low population density. You may want to start a farm, and start caring for livestock, as the zombie apocalypse is likely to destroy the capitalist nightmare we call society. Viva la revolución!!!

Calgary’s Most Haunted Places

Are you looking for a fright this Halloween? You won’t have to look far, as Calgary is home to several haunted places scattered across the city. Here’s a deeper look at 15 of the most haunted buildings in this city.

The Deane House

Today the Deane House is one of Calgary’s top restaurants, but the building was originally built for the Superintendent of Fort Calgary . At some point in the thirties it became a rooming house, which is where a horrific murder-suicide occurred between a married couple. Ever since, reports of a mysterious man smoking a pipe and the apparition of an Indigenous man have been seen. Other strange occurrences include a disconnected telephone that rings, the unexplained smell of cigars, and a bloodstain in the attic that changes colour and size. There’s also a closet near the bloodstain that won’t stay locked and any objects placed inside are later found scattered about with no logical explanation.

Stampede Grandstand

During the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth , the roar of the crowd is a common sound, however when the stadium is empty strange noises and unexplainable apparitions have been reported. During construction, a worker was killed and the hollow footsteps heard echoing through the stands have been attributed to him.

Rose & Crown

This popular pub just off of 17th Avenue was originally a funeral home, which is the perfect origin for any ghost story. Rose & Crown staff have shared stories of windows opening, lights flickering, and the image of a small boy that hides throughout the pub, but especially in the basement. I have chills just thinking about it!

haunted house tour calgary

Lougheed House

Lougheed House was the former home of Senator James Alexander Lougheed. There are numerous ghostly tales associated with this gorgeous sandstone home, but the most common seems to be a phantom couple dancing across the ballroom.

haunted house tour calgary

Suitor House

The Suitor House is now the home of the Calgary General Surgical Associates, but was a rooming house many years ago. One of the popular ghost stories features a young couple who lived upstairs. The husband was a railway employee who died after slipping and falling from a train. When trail whistles are heard, the ghost of his bride can be seen floating on a balcony waiting for her husband to return home.

haunted house tour calgary

Louis Henry Doll, a jeweller, constructed this building in 1907. After opening his business, Doll’s 10-year-old daughter unexpectedly passed away. Today, passersby on Stephen Avenue have reported seeing a ghostly female figure sitting in the third-storey bay window. Could this be the ghost of Doll’s deceased daughter, wandering the halls of her father’s business?

haunted house tour calgary

Fairmont Palliser

One of Calgary’s most posh hotels, the Fairmont Palliser might be luxurious, but is no stranger to ghostly tales. The most common sighting is that of a pair of ghosts seen meandering down the halls of this century-old historic hotel.

haunted house tour calgary

Bow Valley Ranche

The ranch’s history can be traced back to the 1870’s with the first European settlers along the Bow River. Today the area, in particular the ranch house, is home to several reoccurring incidents. Wayne Meikle, a retired urban park planner and one of the founding members of the Friends of Fish Creek Provincial Park Society , has been present for a variety of these mysterious events. During a guided ghost tour, Wayne explained that motion detectors inside the building will set-off alarms, lights turn on upstairs despite the power being disconnected, tools have moved overnight during construction projects, and when the ranch house was unoccupied the police would attempt to use the space for canine training, but were unsuccessful because the dogs would continually bark at something unseen. Wayne also recounted a story about trying to access the ranch house one evening using several different sets of keys from numerous individuals. None of the keys could unlock the door and the group was unable to enter the house. The next day each key from every set easily succeeded in opening the locked door. Many people attribute the phenomena to Charlie Yuen the longtime cook for the ranch. Charlie was killed in a car accident in 1938 while travelling in China and his dying wish was to be buried at the Bow Valley Ranche . Although he was laid to rest in China, many assume that his spirit still resides in the ranch house and that he’s responsible for all the paranormal activity.

haunted house tour calgary

The Zoo Bridge

One of the most grisly stories in the bunch occurred back in 1946 near the bridge connecting Inglewood to St. George’s Island. Six-year-old Donnie Goss was playing in a park near the bridge when he was lured away by a madman. Poor Donnie was assaulted, beaten, and stabbed repeatedly during this cold-blooded murder. In the years since, emergency services have been called to the site due to reports of a child crying for help.

haunted house tour calgary

Rouge Restaurant

This high-end restaurant occupies the old A.E. Cross house and is no stranger to mysterious occurrences. Chairs moving, doors slamming, and pots falling are all commonplace. Others have reported laughter coming from the basement and a phantom woman floating down the stairs. Many believe these are the spirits of some members of the Cross family who died at an early age. You might be dining with some unexpected guests the next time you visit Rouge .

haunted house tour calgary

Knox United Church

It’s fitting that a place of worship is also home to a collection of friendly spirits. Witnesses have seen apparitions in this century-old church praying, knitting, and travelling through the walls. One unique encounter happened to an organist who reported feeling her wrist slapped when she made a mistake while playing.

haunted house tour calgary

Hose & Hound

The phantom tales from this public house aren’t like any of the others on this list. Before becoming a popular Inglewood pub, the Hose & Hound was a fire station that was operated by the city’s first Fire Chief, Cappy Smart. According to rumours, this building is haunted by Smart’s pet monkey, Barney, who was put down after attacking a child. Staff blame Barney for cans being tossed off shelves, starting the dishwasher unexpectedly, and playing with the billiard balls. The next time you’re in the neighbourhood stop in for a few spirits and keep your eyes open for Barney!

haunted house tour calgary

Prince House

Peter Anthony Prince was a successful businessman who built and operated the Eau Claire sawmill (Prince’s Island Park is named for him), but was unlucky when it came to love. Prince lost three wives in a decade to diabetes, tuberculosis, and cancer and their spirits are rumoured to still be inside the home. This house was originally located in the Eau Claire neighbourhood, but was relocated to Heritage Park and designated a historic building. Female apparitions have been spotted through the windows and bright lights have been reported shining from the third floor, despite there being no electricity on that floor. There’s also a story that a guard dog would pull the security guard to the opposite side of the street whenever they made their nightly rounds past the home.

haunted house tour calgary

Cat ‘N Fiddle

The third and final pub on this list, the Cat ‘N Fiddle has its own share of ghost stories. This well-liked pub was originally a funeral home and crematorium. The spirits who inhabit this building are friendly and include a woman in a red dress who smells of perfume and a well-dressed man decked out in a top hat and tails who frequents the washroom. There’s also a biker who reputedly scared a potential thief from breaking and entering.

haunted house tour calgary

Devil’s Playground

This is probably the most hair-raising story on this list, but also the most challenging to verify. Details are scant and reports are mixed, but the commonalities are this; a small schoolhouse burned down, killing anywhere from three to eight children. Reports of children’s handprints appearing on foggy car windows, animal bones arranged in strange patterns, and the haunting laugh of children echoing across the now-empty field all exist. The legends are so well-known that they were the subject of a documentary called Devil’s Playground that premiered at the Calgary Comic Expo on April 28, 2017.

haunted house tour calgary

This is by no means a comprehensive list of haunted places within Calgary, merely a look at some of the post popular. There are numerous other stories about spirits and paranormal happenings in plenty of other Calgary landmarks, such as Old City Hall, Fire Hall No. 1, James Joyce Irish Pub, Garry Theatre, Bank and Baron Pub, Odd Fellows Hall, Sam’s Food and Drink, and Western Canada High School to name just a few more.

Haunted Houses

field-of-scream-logo.png

Our 6 demonic and diabolical haunted houses and the Death Trap are sure to make your heart skip a beat and have you screaming till your lungs hurt.

Buried Alive

Buried Alive

Welcome to the most dreaded funeral of all... your own. As your mourners lower you into the darkness of eternity you have a secret you must share... You are not dead!  You scream... You beg... No one hears you.  You are entombed underground. The pounding of your own heart is maddening... Worms and maggots are crawling towards you, making their way to your ears to eventually chew your brain... Last... remaining... pockets... of air... almost... gone.

Haunted Mansion

Haunted Mansion

A house that's actually haunted? Pfffft. It's just a building... with old furniture.... and strange creaks... and moans.

Mr. and Mrs. Dudley refuse to stay in the house at night... but what do they know? Just because there have been many violent deaths in the past doesn't mean there are more to come. Or does it?

Mad House

It’s a mad, mad world.

This is a highly specialized mission only a few ever come back from. We picked you because you said you couldn’t be broken – well you are most certainly broke now! Let’s just see if you can drag your sorry ass out of this quagmire without going insane trying to find your way out.

Those little pills won’t do you any good. There are no maps to get you out of this mess. This psychologically paralyzing maze may drive you cuckoo, crazed and delirious. Good luck.

Scary Tales

Scary Tales

Fairy tales take a nightmarish turn in this twisted tale where princesses don't get saved, children don’t escape the woods and when you go down the rabbit hole, you don't ever return.

You're a grownup after all. Prepare for a dark departure from the fairy tales you held so dear when you were a wee one. "Sweet dreams darling!"

Now that you are all grown up, discover what really happened behind the rhymes, riddles and tales. Turns out – there were no good guys. Three little pigs – so cute and so clever. Ha! Raging hogs who know how to use tools on you! Little Red Riding Hood? I’m pretty sure you can guess by now why she’s red. That ain’t no wolf blood. It’s the last guy who signed up for this sh*t!

Yeah, yeah…they all lived (?) crappily ever after.

Aliens

It’s funny how humans feel in charge of this third planet from what you call The Sun. You are so cute! Remember last time we were here? And we showed you how to make fire? Now we’re back for a different kind of lesson: A lesson in humility. Let’s see how top-of-the-food-chain you feel after we test a few of our own early prototypes of cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and implants on you.

Now, don’t blame us. Back home they insist we do this.

No one will buy anything without the label:  LIVE-HUMAN TESTED

Death Trap

Enter this 6000 square foot fence maze! Sounds innocent enough. Just an easy walk through... Except for the dead ends! Did you just trip over an old headstone? Stub your toe on a crypt? Will you ever escape? Alive?

Tread lightly. You’ll be greeted by residents at every dead end. Some will be glad to see you, some not so much. Is that the wind howling or are those blood curdling screams? Why the uneasy feelings? No one’s stalking you, right?

'We’re pretty sure the monkey is the culprit': Calgary’s most haunted houses and spooky stories

Calgary has its fair share of haunted houses and spooky stories that range from fun to frightening:

THE HOSE & HOUND

haunted house tour calgary

Inglewood, Calgary’s oldest neighbourhood, is home to many of them.

Those working at the Hose & Hound say patrons aren’t the only ones playing around.

“We hear all kinds of different sounds. There’s pool cues that move at night, pool balls that move by themselves at night and there’s pictures downstairs and the eyes will follow you around,” said TJ Kastner, a bartender.

The pub was Calgary’s Fire Station No. 3 from 1906 to 1952.

As the city’s first fire chief, James “Cappy” Smart worked in the fire hall part-time.

He loved exotic pets, one of which was a monkey that had to be put down after it attacked and bit a child.

Many believe the ghost of the monkey is still hanging around.

“We’re pretty sure the monkey is the culprit responsible for all the kitchen activity,” Kastner said.

“He turns on the dishwasher back there pretty often and kind of shakes the pots and pans around when people are cooking back there.”

Kastner said his most memorable experience was when he got a helping hand while cleaning.

“I was sweeping up a little mess and every time I’d go back to get the broom, it would be in a new spot. So, I didn’t really know what was going on. I just assumed it was the monkey because we all always kind of do.”

People also claim to hear horse hooves outside and inside the station, along with neighing.

One of them is believed to be Cappy’s horse, Lightning, who died in a fire.

DEANE HOUSE

haunted house tour calgary

One of the city’s most well-known haunted spots is the Deane House.

It was built in 1906 and is closely associated with Richard Burton Deane, superintendent of Fort Calgary from 1906 to 1914.

In 1971, a man murdered his wife at the house then took his own life.

Ever since, the ghost of a man with a tobacco pipe has been seen wandering.

“Also reports of phones ringing that are disconnected, fire alarms going off when there’s no fire or anyone in that space,” said Josh Traptow, CEO of Heritage Calgary.

The Deane House is now a restaurant.

SUITOR HOUSE

haunted house tour calgary

Built in 1908 in the Queen Anne Revival style, the Suitor House was once a boarding house.

During that time, a young couple lived there. The husband, a railroad worker, would jump onto moving train cars nearby, until one day he slipped off and died.

His distraught wife died shortly after of a broken heart.

“The rumour is that it’s his widow that now haunts the Suitor House. People have seen shadows, you know, just ghostly things happening here,” Traptow said.

The Suitor House has since been turned into medical offices.

ALEXANDRA SCHOOL

haunted house tour calgary

Alexandra Centre, which operated as a school from 1902 to 1963, is reportedly haunted by a former caretaker named Joe who died in the building’s stairwell.

“People have reported hearing footsteps, basically this former caretaker doing his rounds when he worked at the school,” Traptow said.

“So, shadows, noises, things being moved around, maybe some jingling of keys.”

AIRDRIE HOUSE

haunted house tour calgary

Heritage Park also boasts paranormal activity.

Behind its old-fashioned charm lie stories of otherworldly encounters and spine-tingling history.

The Airdrie House, built in 1906, is one place no ghost guide dares go in.

“It’s that gut feeling that you get that you’re not supposed to be in here. Hands are really common in this house like feeling as if someone’s trying to push you out of the house, push you down the stairs and out,” said Natalie Heaton, ghost guide at Heritage Park.

“This house in particular does not like women and does not like ghost guides, thus why I don’t go in.”

Heaton said many believe the house itself isn’t haunted, but the artifacts inside, taken from ghost towns in B.C., are.

“The temperature, regardless of if it’s 30 C or -30 C outside, it’s always 10 C in the home. It never changes,” she said.

PRINCE HOUSE

haunted house tour calgary

The Prince House is also said to have a lot of ghost activity.

Peter Prince built the house in 1894, but his wife Margaret died in the house shortly after. He went on to have three other wives who also died. It’s said he, too, died in the house.

Technology often fails or dies in the house, especially on the second floor, and people report hearing footsteps as well as doors opening and closing.

Heaton used to be an interpreter at the house and has enough stories to fill a book.

During one of her first years working there, she was locking up after a tough day and got an unexpected message.

“I had to go upstairs and just wipe down the windows that look into each of the rooms. As I was kneeling in front of the master bedroom, I sprayed the Windex, looked down, ripped the paper towel and when I looked back up, drawn in the freshly sprayed Windex was a little smiley face,” she said.

Heaton said most of her interactions at the Prince House have been positive — something she’s always been mindful of by saying “hello and good morning” each time she enters the house and “thank you and goodnight” when she leaves.

GLEDHILL’S DRUG STORE

haunted house tour calgary

There’s a long dead cat that still walks around meowing inside Gledhill’s Drug Store in Heritage Park.

“Apparently it loves its owner so much that it still walks around in the pharmacy to this day, looking for its owner,” Heaton said.

It goes to show not all cats only have nine lives.

“I always invite people to keep their eye open because you never know when it’ll appear.”
