American Forces Travel Privileges Extended to Eligible Veterans

The Department of Defense announced today a policy change to the current shopping privileges on the American Forces Travel website. As directed by acting Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness Virginia S. Penrod in a memo signed April 12, 2021, the department will extend online access to the website to honorably discharged veterans of the uniformed services.

On average, customers save 35-40% compared to commercial travel pricing by using AFT. This includes discounted rates on hotels (up to 60%), airfare, rental cars, vacation packages, event tickets, and cruises.

“Sixteen million veterans will now be able to access the American Forces Travel website, joining the 10 million active duty, Guard and reserve service members, family members, DOD civilians, and other patrons who are already receiving the benefit,” said Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Military Community and Family Policy Patricia “Patty” Montes Barron. “We are committed to providing quality-of-life programs to our military community, which includes our honorably discharged veterans.”

The change will not affect access for existing patrons, and the increased customer base will allow AFT to negotiate better prices for its customers. 

AFT launched in 2019 as the only official joint service morale, welfare, and recreation leisure travel website exclusively for DOD patrons. In addition to improving access to DOD’s MWR benefits, every booking on American Forces Travel generates revenue to support critical quality-of-life programs for service members and families.

There is a wide range of continuing and promotional discounts and incentives available, and these can often be found via resources like travel clubs, booking websites, attraction websites, and airline, hotel, and cruise websites.

Here is a comprehensive guide to getting recognition for your military service in the form of discounts, special offers, and incentives.

There are a number of organizations and programs that military service members and veterans can join to get special access to travel benefits and other advantages. These programs are often free for those who are eligible, and applications can be submitted online. Here are several organizations to choose from:

• Armed Forces Vacation Club (AFVC) — The AFVC is a membership organization for active duty, guard, reserve, and retired military employees. It offers weeklong resort vacations at thousands of resorts in over 100 countries starting at very low prices, including last-minute vacation deals, “space available” deals, and short-stay deals. Members can also buy travel certificates to be redeemed at affiliated resorts. For travelers in need of inspiration, the AFVC features a Vacation Planning Resource Center full of vacation ideas and travel tips.
• In Honor of our Troops Foundation (IHOOT)  — This organization originally started by offering veterans 1 free vacation per year. They have also added another program — the IHOOT Acquisition Program — that offers discounted accommodation rates to members all year round. You can apply for free vacations that are aimed at offering rest, recuperation, and healing to help military families reconnect with each other. There are 100 locations, including accommodations in places like Hawaii, California, and Mexico. Although the stay is free, airfare is not included. It is also suggested you apply at least 6 weeks before your intended vacation date.
• The Military Wallet — Sign up for a free newsletter to stay up to date with some of the latest deals and incentives available to veterans and check out the Travel Discounts page to get information on tickets and other travel options at reduced costs.
• Operation We Are Here   — This website has a variety of air travel assistance links for the military community.
• SMART RVing — This site aims to source the most competitive RV rental and accommodation prices available for military veterans, and there are regular rallies throughout the country that you might want to attend.
• United Services Automobile Association (USAA) Travel Deals  — USAA offers insurance, banking, investment, and retirement services to both active and former military service members and their families. In addition to the free financial resources that USAA members receive, veterans can also check out the special travel deals. On the organization’s  Travel Deals  page, visitors can explore  car rental services  as well as deals on flights, hotels, cruises, and travel insurance that can only be accessed by registering online as a member.
• Vacation for Warriors — Specifically aimed at providing free vacations for soldiers who are injured during combat, Vacations for Warriors is a non-profit that was set up in 2014. These vacations are made possible with the help of commercial organizations like American Airlines, which donated 1 million AAdvantage miles, along with other transferable hotel points and timeshare options.

Many travel discounts are available to military service members and veterans even if they do not belong to an organization. The following websites offer military travel deals online:

• American Forces Travel — This Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) program is for active military, Guard or Reserve, U.S. Coast Guard, retired military, and all eligible MWR patrons. Hotel, flight, and rental car deals are supported by Priceline , cruise and vacation packages are on offer, and event tickets are bookable through TicketNetwork.
• CheapTickets — By visiting the CheapTickets military page, active-duty service members, those on reserve, National Guard members, and veterans can sign up to verify their military or veterans status to get discounts of up to 18% off.
• Hotwire — Active, retired, and veterans of the U.S. military, and their spouses and minor children get $10 off Hot Rate hotel bookings
• ID.me Shop — See specific military rates for a variety of travel categories, including hotels, flights, cruises, car rentals, theme parks, tours, and more.
• Military.com — Military.com is a website dedicated to providing military service members, veterans, and families with community support and information on the benefits they might have access to. Visitors can find advice on military travel, getting military deals, and military lodging options. The website also gives travel advice and has a large section of travel discounts.
• Military Fares  — Military Fares is a website that allows users to search a variety of airlines, hotels, and car rental for military rates. The platform is a Priceline Partner Network that provides an extensive offering of flights. Recent military deals that users have purchased are displayed so visitors can get an idea of what rates might be on offer when they’re searching.
• Travelation — This search page dedicated to military travel deals makes it easy to book flights with military and veteran discounts. There is also a military promotional code for additional savings.
• Veterans Advantage — Enroll with Veterans Advantage and get access to a number of travel discounts, special offers, and medical/insurance services that are included as part of the membership package. Qualification includes anyone who served in the military and immediate family members. There is an annual membership plan available for $4.99 per month, but if you take advantage of the various offers and discounts, the savings should be far greater than this fee. Plus, the $55,000 insurance coverage that comes as part of the deal is worth having.

Keep in mind that sometimes when you book through a site that offers discounts to military and veterans, you might not receive miles or points for your flight or stay or on-site benefits that may come with elite status.

Most major airlines offer discounts like reduced flight costs, but you might also be offered a free checked bag or other incentives. If you are booking direct, many airlines don’t often advertise military rates on their website, so you might have to call to ask if a discount is available.

Here are some airlines that offer discounts or benefits to active-duty service members or veterans :

• Air Canada —Eligible active and retired members of the Canadian and U.S. military are able to check up to 3 bags.
• Alaska Airlines — Receive 5% off through the Veterans Advantage program. Those on orders receive 5 complimentary checked bags, as well as free Alaska Board Room access. Other benefits include priority boarding for those in uniform and a 15% discount on food purchased inflight with an active ID.
• Allegiant Airlines — Receive up to 5 free checked bags, free boarding pass printing, and free advanced seat selection.
• American Airline s   — Active-duty military on orders receive 5 free checked bags, or 3 checked bags on all other itineraries. Uniformed service members also receive Group 1 boarding on all flights.
• Delta Air Lines — Active-duty service members are allowed up to 5 free checked bags.
• Frontier Airlines — Baggage fees are waived if you are on active duty.
• Hawaiian Airlines — Receive up to 5 free checked bags for military on active orders, or 2 checked bags for those on leisure travel, and 5% off airfares with the Veterans Advantage program.
• JetBlue — Receive up to a 5% discount with the Veterans Advantage program or by booking directly through JetBlue for service members on active orders. Up to 5 checked bags are free when flying on orders.
• Southwest Airlines — Special rates are available at 800-1-FLY-SWA (not online).
• Spirit Airlines — Active-duty military are allowed 2 free checked bags and a free carry-on, in addition to the already free personal item.
• United Airlines — A discount of up to 5% off of tickets is offered via the Veterans Advantage program.

Bottom Line: You may have to call the airline you’re booking with directly to inquire about military fares and special benefits, as many times these rates aren’t published publicly online. You may also want to compare the rates offered against the best websites for booking flights at the cheapest prices .

Before or after your flight, having access to an airline lounge is a great place to relax, use the restroom, or grab a quick bite to eat.

These are the opportunities for military or veteran access to airport lounges:

• American Airlines Admirals Club — If you’re in uniform and flying American, you and your immediate family can enter the lounge without any cost.
• United Club — If you’re flying United and are in uniform or have active military orders, you can access the lounge.
• USO Lounges — There are approximately 300 locations both in and out of airports that active duty, guard, reserve military and their dependents, and retired military can access with a valid ID.

• Aqua Hotels and Resorts — Both short-stay and long-stay military discounts for these Hawaiian resorts are available.
• Beaches and Sandals — Military members get an additional 10% off on top of special promotions for these family-friendly all-inclusive Caribbean resorts.
• Best Western — Veterans, military, and government personnel are eligible for a discount at or below per diem and can also apply for the Best Western Service Rewards Program.
• Caesars Entertainment — Eligible military and veterans can save up to 35% on rooms.
• Choice Hotels  — Receive lifetime Gold elite status and a military discount on hotel stays.
• Hilton Hotels  — Depending on the hotel, you’ll receive a military or government discount.
• Hyatt Hotels  — Book with the military rate and receive a discount.
• IHG Hotels — Active-duty service members will receive a military and government discount.

It is worth mentioning that if you are trying to save on costs, you might be able to find military lodging near your chosen destination.

You can find accommodation if you plan your trip in advance and allow time to reserve a place at least 60 days in advance. Visit DOD Lodging to see what options are available. There are centralized reservation systems available to book accommodations with the U.S. Army (866-363-5771), the U.S. Navy (800-628-9466), or the U.S. Air Force (888-235-6343). If you want to stay at a U.S. Marine Corps or a Coast Guard lodge, you will have to search for the lodge closest to your destination and contact them directly.

• Avis — A 25% discount on car rentals is provided for service members.
• Alamo — Military members receive a discount, including a damage waiver, and there are no additional driver or underage fees.
• Budget — U.S. military veterans, active-duty military, National Guard and Reservists, and their families receive up to 25% off with a Veterans Advantage membership.
• Dollar — A 5% discount is offered to Veterans Advantage members.
• Enterprise — Active-duty members and veterans are eligible for a discount.
• Hertz — Receive discounted rates, 1-class car upgrades, and membership in the Hertz Gold Plus Rewards program .

The Information, Tickets and Travel (ITT) office on local installations also offers savings on area attractions and special events, and can even help with hotel and cruise bookings.

• Busch Gardens and SeaWorld — Active and retired military save on tickets by credentialing through ID.com and then purchasing tickets through that portal.
• Cedar Point — Single-day admission tickets are offered at a discount off of the front gate price.
• Dollywood — U.S. active or retired military, veterans, and military reservists, spouses, and dependents with valid military personnel IDs are eligible for a 30% discount on 1-day admission tickets, and you can upgrade this ticket for a discounted military Season Pass.
• LEGOLAND — Active-duty military can receive free admission to LEGOLAND Florida Resort & Water Park . Veterans, non-active military, and military families are eligible for discounts of 10% to 25%. At LEGOLAND California Resort , a discount of 25% to 50% is offered.
• Schlitterbahn New Braunfels — A special discount is offered through local installations or online.
• Undercover Tourist — This is a popular website for purchasing discount tickets to parks like Walt Disney World, Universal, or SeaWorld. Military discounts are not offered, but this is a great site to check to see if you’re getting the best deal!
• Universal Orlando Resort — Special pricing is available for active and retired members of the U.S. military. Members can also access special vacation packages that include hotel accommodations, theme park tickets, and early park admission.
• Universal Studios Hollywood — Active and retired U.S. military personnel are eligible for discounts through their participating military ticket office. An in-person discount of $3 off is offered at the gate with credentials.
• Walt Disney World — Active and retired members of the U.S. military are eligible for special deals but must contact their participating U.S. military base ticket office.

Space-A travel is available to those who are on active duty. These flights can be limited, but they allow service members the ability to catch flights for free.

Space-A travel is also available to certain veterans. This includes retired veterans and those who are permanently 100% disabled.

Veteran airline discounts abound, but Space-A travel is among the best. Note that veterans flying Space-A are limited in their destinations and lower on the priority list than active-duty members.

Honor Flights

Honor Flight Network is a nonprofit organization that offers flights for veterans. Those who have served in the military can receive a complimentary trip to Washington, D.C., to be honored for their service.

Airline discounts

Many airlines offer discounts to veterans. Most of these are via Veterans Advantage, whose VetRewards program costs money but provides 5% discounts on airfare with many airlines.

You don’t have to be a disabled veteran to get flight discounts with Veterans Advantage. You can be active duty, a veteran or even an immediate family member of someone who’s served.

Veteran discounts on hotels

It’s easy to find hotels with veteran discounts and even free vacations for disabled veterans — though that’s not usually a requirement.

American Forces Travel

American Forces Travel is a website offering comprehensive travel discounts to those who are or have been in the military. You’ll need to verify your information before accessing the website, after which you’ll be entitled to exclusive discounts on hotels, flights, rental cars, and even event tickets.

Armed Forces Vacation Club

The Armed Forces Vacation Club is available to active-duty members and veterans and can provide great discounts on vacations.

Once registered, you can book hotels and vacation rentals for cheap — and we mean really cheap. Think “seven nights in a condo near Orlando, Florida for $400” cheap. There’s a standard membership for free, but premium members are entitled to bigger discounts.

Nonprofit organizations

Many organizations in the United States enjoy recognizing veterans, which is why you’ll find many offering free retreats, resorts and hotel stays around the world.

In Honor of Our Troops (IHOOT) is just one of these; eligible service members and veterans can enjoy a free stay at participating properties.

MWR properties

Those who’ve been in the military will no doubt remember the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) program. Whether you hung out in its rec room or rented low-cost camping equipment, stopping by the MWR office was probably a common occurrence.

Eligible veterans will be happy to know that Armed Forces Recreation Center resorts (AFRC) are bookable even after they leave the military. Popular options include the Shades of Green resort at Walt Disney World and the Hale Koa Hotel in Hawaii.

Other hotel discounts

Veterans Advantage also has a list of hotel chains available for discounts, including Wyndham, Marriott and Hilton.

Other travel discounts

Travel costs aren’t limited to flights and accommodations. If you’re looking to go on vacation, here are some other veteran-specific discounts to look out for.

Many cellphone providers give discounts to active-duty military and veterans. T-Mobile’s veteran discount is among the best. You’ll have access to military-specific phone plans with pricing up to 40% off standard rates.

Verizon also offers a military discount that extends to veterans, but it’s not quite as generous. Once verified, planholders can save up to $25 per month on eligible plans.

Finally, AT&T offers military members and veterans 25% off phone plans.

While most airlines are willing to offer benefits only to active-duty military personnel, Allegiant Air stands out . This is thanks to the incredible perks that veterans (and active-duty members) receive.

As a low-cost airline, Allegiant charges for overhead carry-ons and checked bags. However, veterans are entitled to two free checked bags, a free carry-on and a free pet in the cabin when flying with Allegiant.

Tickets, tours and other attractions

American Forces Travel offers discounted tickets to all veterans, whether or not they’re disabled. The same is true of GOVX, which discounts tickets and other items, including travel purchases.

If you’re a veteran with a disability, you have access to the MWR program and its ticket office, which can provide incredible savings on tickets, tours and other activities.

Depending on your level of service connection, you can save up to half off popular attractions such as Walt Disney World and Universal Studios Orlando.

What Are Space-A Flights (AKA, Military Hops)?

Are you eligible for a space-a flight, how does space-a travel work.

Update: On April 22, 2022, the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense lifted all restrictions on Space-A travel. These restrictions were put in place in March 2020 to limit the spread of Covid-19. Mask mandates and medical screening protocols may still apply.

Looking for a way to save money on travel ? Flying space-available (Space-A) on a military flight can be a fun and inexpensive way to see the world, as airfare to and from U.S. military bases can cost you next to nothing.

Flying Space-A on military aircraft is very different from using commercial air travel, and you can’t just call a military passenger terminal and book your flight. It’s worth learning how Space-A travel works so you can take advantage of this incredible privilege available to eligible members of the military community.

After military flights accommodate all required passengers and cargo, they often release extra seats to service members, retirees and their families. These eligible passengers can “hop” on the flights on a space-available (Space-A) basis. This is where the term “military hop” comes from.

Because these are military, not commercial, flights, the military mission is always the priority. You may fly on a commercial plane, but you could also be in a cargo plane or fuel tanker.

There are six categories, or “cats,” of eligible Space-A travelers, depending on their duty status and the reason they are traveling.

Those in lower-numbered categories receive higher priority for available seats.

Here is a summary of the Space-A travel categories, according to the Military OneSource website :

Cat 1: Emergency leave unfunded travel

Cat 2: Accompanied environmental and morale leave (EML)

Cat 3: Ordinary leave, service members’ relatives, house-hunting permissive temporary duty (TDY), Medal of Honor holders , and foreign military; also includes unaccompanied dependents of service members deployed for more than 365 consecutive days.

Cat 4: Unaccompanied EML; also includes dependents of service members deployed between 30 and 364 consecutive days

Cat 5: Permissive TDY (non-house-hunting), student travel, and post-deployment/mobilization respite absence; also includes unaccompanied dependents of service members stationed outside the continental U.S. (OCONUS)

Cat 6: Military retirees, their dependents, military reserve, Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) members and veterans who are 100% disabled

It is important to know your category when planning your Space-A travel because your category determines when you can sign up, what paperwork you need, and where you are eligible to fly. Table 3 in Section 4.11 of Department of Defense Instruction 4515.13 has more details on eligibility by category and approved geographical travel segments.

Eligibility Note for Veterans with a 100% Disability Rating :

According to the AF.mil website , “veterans with a service-connected, permanent disability rating of 100 percent will be able to travel in the Continental United States or directly between the CONUS and Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, and American Samoa (Guam and American Samoa travelers may transit Hawaii or Alaska); or traveling within Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands on flights operated by Air Mobility Command.”

Disabled veterans must have a DD Form 2765, Defense Department ID Card (Tan), to fly Space-A.

The better you understand how to fly Space-A, the greater your chances of having a successful trip.

The first step is to learn which bases have regular flights to where you want to travel. This list of worldwide destinations where Space-A travel may be available includes profiles of some of the terminals and information about typical flight destinations. You’ll want to begin following some of their Space-A flight schedules, which we’ll discuss in the next step.

You may find several possible routes to your desired destination. For example, if you are on the East Coast and want to fly to one of the common destinations, including Spain or Germany, you will likely be able to travel from several nearby bases. Travelers from other parts of the U.S. may need to take two or more hops to get there.

The Space-A Travelers Facebook group can help you put together a flight plan to your destination. You can ask questions and find information about flying to and from specific locations.

You may have to combine Space-A travel with other transportation. For example, you may need to fly or drive to a base with regular Space-A flights to your desired destination. Or you may need to take a train or flight from an overseas base to your final destination.

The Air Mobility Command website maintains a list of all the military passenger terminals , as well as their contact info and links to their websites and Facebook pages.

You’ll find a 72-hour flight schedule for most terminals on their Facebook pages or the AMC website. The schedules include trip destinations, the number of Space-A seats and the “roll call” time. The roll call time is when terminal staff announces who has been selected for the flight.

You may also find information about recently departed flights, including how the number of Space-A seats and how many passengers competed for those seats.

When you monitor the flights that depart from your target passenger over several weeks or months, you’ll notice patterns in the location and frequency of their missions.

Determine all the terminals you could depart from to reach your desired destination. You’ll increase your chances of success by signing up to fly from all of them. Signing up is free and takes only a few minutes.

The AMC website details the sign-up options, including the required information. You can sign up through their website, by email or in person at the terminal. You can also use the Take-A-Hop app (which costs $6.99). If you’re signing up for several terminals, email and the Take-A-Hop app are the easiest ways to do so.

The sooner you can sign up, the better, as priority within each category is based on the sign-up date and time. So sign up as early as possible. At most terminals, your sign-up is valid for up to 60 days.

Keep in mind that your category may affect how early you can sign up for Space-A travel. For example, active-duty service members (Cat 3) must be on leave before they can sign up. Those in Cat 3, however, have precedence over those in Cats 4 through 6, regardless of when they signed up.

You must mark yourself present at the terminal before roll call to let the staff know that you are competing for the flight. You can do so anytime within 24 hours of the scheduled roll call. Note: roll call times can change unexpectedly, so continually monitor the terminal’s 72-hour flight schedule to ensure you get there in time or, better yet, call the terminal to confirm.

Bring your military ID and any necessary documents, such as your passport, your leave form or your EML orders. If you are an unaccompanied dependent, you’ll need a memo from your sponsor’s command. Also bring a copy of your sign-up email as a backup to prove your sign-up date and time.

At roll call, terminal staff will announce how many Space-A seats are available for the flight and then the names of the selected passengers,  beginning with those in the highest-priority category.

If they call your name, go to the desk and confirm that you and any dependents traveling with you are present. You’ll need to show your military ID and any required paperwork, as well as ID cards for passengers older than 10 years old. For younger passengers,  bring their passports or MilConnect printouts that show the Department of Defense ID numbers.

If they don’t call your name, don’t leave the terminal just yet. Sometimes last-minute Space-A seats become available, so stay at the terminal until boarding time.

Once you and all members of your traveling party, along with all your luggage, must be present when the baggage check begins. This may be right after roll call, or it may be several hours later. You will need to stay in the terminal, as boarding times, like roll call times, can change without notice.

The AMC website’s FAQ page includes detailed information on baggage allowances. Because smaller aircraft may have different weight limits for luggage, it’s best to check ahead of time.

You will generally be allowed to check two pieces of luggage weighing up to 70 lbs each. Similar to many commercial flights, you can also bring one piece of carry-on luggage that fits under your seat or in the overhead compartment. You can usually check car seats and strollers, and they won’t count toward your baggage allowance.

AMC terminals follow the Transportation Security Administration’s baggage screening guidelines , so check their website ahead of time to see what you can bring in your carry-on bag, and what you must put in checked luggage.

Check if meals are available on the flight, as you’ll pay for these when you check your luggage. Some locations offer simple box lunches for a nominal cost.

If you are flying Space-A on a Patriot Express flight , your boarding pass will list your assigned seat.

When terminal staff announces boarding, you’ll go through security and wait in a secure area. With most flights, a bus will take you to the aircraft, and you’ll board from the tarmac.

On most Space-A flights, you’ll choose your seat when you board. On Patriot Express flights, your boarding pass will list your assigned seat.

Patriot Express flights offer amenities, including meals and in-flight movies. 

Other Space-A flights do not. Snacks and water may be available, but it’s best to be prepared and bring your own.

Seating depends on the type of aircraft. Some have seats that are comparable to commercial airlines. Others have web seating along the sides of the plane. If this is the case, you can stretch out if there’s room.

Patriot Express flights are climate-controlled, but other military aircraft are not. They are often cold or hot, so dress in layers. They can also be loud. The crew usually provides foam earplugs, but it’s a good idea to bring your own.

There are advantages and disadvantages to Space-A travel.

Space-A flights can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars over commercial airlines, which is a clear advantage. The only costs you might incur are a low per-passenger fee on Patriot Express flights, and you may be able to purchase low-cost meals at some terminals that offer meals for purchase.

When you land, you’ll be able to access base resources, including overnight base lodging and the commissary. You may even be able to purchase discount tickets to local events and attractions through the base’s Information, Tickets and Travel office (ITT).

Being able to stretch out on some aircraft can be another advantage over flying economy in a commercial plane. 

If you’re traveling with small children, you may also find that other passengers are more supportive than with a commercial airline.

And, of course, there may be a greater sense of adventure with Space-A travel.

• Free or low-cost air travel
• Access to base amenities (Base Exchange, Commissary, MWR, ITT, etc.)
• Possibly more space to spread out compared to commercial airlines
• It’s an adventure!

Space-A travel is less predictable than flying commercially. Passenger terminals post flight schedules only 72 hours in advance, and you won’t know if you got a seat until the last minute. 

Peak travel times, including summer, winter holidays, and even spring break, are even more competitive. You may need to be more flexible about when you travel and even where you’ll go.

You may incur other costs with Space-A travel, such as transportation to the base you’ll be flying from. You may need to wait for a flight home–possibly for days–and the costs of lodging and meals can quickly add up.

Finally, Space-A travel, unless you’re on a Patriot Express flight, is bare bones. You may find it cold, loud, and uncomfortable. 

• Travel and schedules can vary.
• Seats aren’t guaranteed — you must have flexible travel plans!
• Travel can be difficult during busy times (summer PCS season, holidays, etc.).
• Lodging, meals and transportation costs can add up.
• Military aircraft can be cold and uncomfortable.

If you have the time, flexibility, and patience to wait for a flight, Space-A travel can offer you an adventure while saving you a lot of money. If you’re traveling for an event, such as a wedding, and must arrive by a specific time, Space-A is not the best way to travel, especially if it’s during the peak seasons of summer, winter holidays, and spring break.

Flying Space-A requires planning, patience, and flexibility. Learn as much as you can about the process, and also research desired destinations and passenger terminals so that you can put together a successful flight plan.

When you are ready to leave, make sure you always have a backup plan and ensure you have enough money to pay for commercial transportation if Space-A doesn’t work out. Also, be prepared for a multi-legged journey–several shorter hops that bring you closer to your destination rather than one long direct flight.

Military Veterans Gain Access to Priceline-Run Discount Travel Website

Armed forces travel program offers cheaper flights, hotels, rental cars, cruises, more.

A recent policy change makes 16 million veterans eligible to receive travel discounts of up to 60 percent off through the American Forces Travel (AFT) website, according to an announcement from the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD).

Previously, only active duty, National Guard, reservists, their families and DOD civilians were eligible. Now, all honorably discharged veterans from any branch of service are granted access.

AARP Membership — $12 for your first year when you sign up for Automatic Renewal

AARP Travel Benefits

AARP members, regardless of military service, have access to  a variety of travel benefits  including 10 percent off at select hotels, up to 30 percent off select car rentals, up to $300 in extra onboard credits for select cruises, and a 5 percent rebate (up to $350) on eligible group hotel bookings. Visit the  AARP Travel Center  Powered by Expedia or call 800-675-4318 to book travel.

The AFT website offers over 1.2 million hotels in 71,000 global destinations along with flights, rental cars, cruises, vacation packages and event tickets. Discounts can range from 35 percent to 60 percent off traditional pricing, according to AFT.

AFT launched in 2019 as a Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) program designed to provide travel benefits to the military community. The website is operated by Priceline, the online travel agency, at no cost to the DOD. Meanwhile, the program generates revenue to support quality-of-life programs for service members and families, according to DOD.

First-time users are required to  provide their service information  to determine eligibility through the DOD's Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS). Once verified, trips can be booked at any time.

Those who are eligible for American Forces Travel discounts include:

• All current active duty military (Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force and Coast Guard)
• All members of the reserve components and National Guard
• Coast Guard Auxiliary Active Duty
• All current active duty and retired National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
• All current active duty and retired U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS)
• All retired military, including those in the Reserves and National Guard who are retirement eligible
• All Medal of Honor recipients

• Eligible family members who are officially sponsored (ID card holder) by authorized patrons in the above categories
• All Department of Defense and Coast Guard civilians, including appropriated funds (APF) employees and nonappropriated funds (NAF) employees
• Full-time, paid employees of the American Red Cross and United Service Organizations (USO) hired in the United States and serving at U.S. DOD installations overseas

9/11 Memorial and Museum -- Throughout Salute to Service, November 8 through 12 , military veterans, active military, retired military, and their guests may reserve complimentary tickets.

Akron Zoo  -- Veterans receive free admission with valid military ID, and immediate family members receive 50% off admission, November 8 through 12 . Go to the ticket counter to purchase tickets.

Aquarium of the Pacific -- Veterans and active-duty military personnel get free admission on November 11 .

Arizona State Parks -- Veterans, active-duty military, and National Guard get free entrance on November 11 .

Army Corp of Engineers Recreation Areas -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will waive day use fees at its recreation areas nationwide November 11.

B&Bs for Vets -- Hundreds of inns and B&Bs will honor active-duty military and veterans for Veterans Day with free stays. Most of the inns are offering one free room night on November 10 or 11 , but offers may vary.

Birmingham Zoo -- Veterans, active-duty military and five dependents (up to six total) get free admission November 11 through 12 . Guests must show proof of military service.

Capital Wheel -- Active and retired military can experience The Capital Wheel for free on November 11 with a valid military ID.

CheapOair   -- Use the promo code VTRN25 and save up to $25 off CheapOair's fees on flights when you book October 6 through November 15 .

Cincinnati Zoo  -- All members of the military will receive free admission on November 11 . The offer also allows military personnel to purchase up to six half-price admission tickets for members of their immediate family.

Colonial Williamsburg -- For the entire Veterans Day Weekend, November 10 through 12 , active-duty military, Reservists, retirees, veterans, National Guardsmen and their immediate dependents get free admission.

Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum -- On November 11 veterans and active–duty military members get free museum admission alongside up to three immediate family members. Proof of military affiliation must be presented.

Dave & Buster's -- Veterans get a free entree (up to $20) and a free $10 Power Card with a valid veterans ID card on November 11 .

Durham Museum -- Veterans and their families get free admission on November 11 . Veterans can also enjoy a free hot dog meal at the Soda Fountain.

Gilroy Gardens -- Gilroy Gardens offers free admission for active-duty and retired military with valid ID November 10 to 12 . Military can also get up to 6 free tickets for friends and family. 

Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden   --   Veterans get free admission on November 11 .

Hagley Museum and Library -- Current military members, veterans, and their families get free admission on November 11 .

Killington Resort -- Active-duty, retired and honorably discharged members of the military receive a free lift ticket on November 11 .

Knott's Berry Farm -- Active-duty military and veterans receive discounted admission for themselves and up to 5 guests during Military Tribute Days, November 1 through 16 and November 27 through December 14 . Tickets can be purchased online or at the Knott’s Berry Farm ticket booths.

La Quinta by Wyndham -- Eligible military members enjoy 12% off Best Available Rate at participating La Quinta by Wyndham hotels. Plus, Wyndham Rewards members receive 1,000 bonus points for one qualified stay booked direct by December 8 and completed by December 11, 2023.

Main Event -- On November 11 , active-duty military and veterans get a free double cheeseburger and 30 minute Fun Card with ID.

Mammoth Mountain -- Veterans and active-duty military members can ski or ride for free on November 11 . To redeem your free lift ticket, visit the ticket window at Main Lodge and present a valid military ID.

Montgomery Zoo  -- Veterans, active-duty military personnel, and their dependent family members receive a 50% discount on regular daytime admission to the Montgomery Zoo and Mann Wildlife Learning Museum, November 5 through 11 .

Monticello -- Veterans get complimentary admission November 10 through 12 .

Montpelier -- Veterans and active-duty service members get a free "Highlights of Montpelier" tour and Museum Shop discount on November 10 and 11 .

Mount Vernon -- All active-duty, former, or retired military personnel are admitted for free on November 11 .

Museum of the Bible -- Active-duty service members and veterans, and their spouses and children receive free admission from November 11 through 18 . Present your military or veteran ID cards at Ticketing.

Nashville Zoo -- Active-duty military personnel, veterans and their immediate families receive free admission on November 12 . Advance reservations are not required.

National Parks -- On November 11 , get free admission to all National Park Service sites that charge an entrance fee.

National WWI Museum and Memorial -- Admission is free for veterans and active-duty military personnel, November 10 through 12 .

Natural History Museum of Utah -- From November 10 through 12 , the Natural History Museum of Utah offers free admission to former members of the U.S. military, plus one additional guest each.

NEW Zoo & Adventure Park  -- Veterans, active-duty military personnel, and their immediate families get free zoo admission on November 11 .

North Carolina Zoo -- Military personnel, veterans and one accompanying guest get free admission November 6 through 12 .

Northwest Trek Wildlife Park -- Veterans and active-duty military members can enjoy the Northwest Trek for free on November 11 . Immediate family members receive half-off general admission. Offer is not valid on online purchases or premier tours (Wild Drives/Keeper Adventure Tours).

NY Waterway -- Active-duty military and veterans ride the ferry for free on November 11 .

OTL Seat Fillers -- Los Angeles Area military, veterans, and military families can register as a new Los Angeles Seat Filler before November 12 for two free months of seat filling tickets for two. No credit card needed. Various shows like plays, musicals, comedy shows, and special events.

Pickleball Kingdom -- From November 11 to 13 , veterans play for free.

Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium -- On November 11 , veterans and active-duty service members get free admission, and their families get half-off general admission. This offer is valid at the Zoo admission window and not valid on online purchases. 

Pro Football Hall of Fame -- Veterans plus one guest get free admission and parking to the Veterans Day Event & Expo on November 11 . A 20% off discount in the Hall of Fame Store will also be offered.

San Antonio Zoo -- Active-duty, retired, veteran members of the military, National Guard and Reserves get free admission throughout November . Plus, up to four immediate family members can receive 50% off single day tickets on date of visit.

Sedgwick County Zoo -- Veterans, military personnel, and their families get free admission for their entire party on November 11 . Must present valid military ID or proof of active deployment. Offer is also valid for Gold Star families. Includes daily admission only, not applicable for Wild Lights tickets.

Six Flags Discovery Kingdom -- Veterans and active-duty military personnel will be given complimentary park admission with valid military ID, November 10 to 12 . Family members are eligible to receive $19.99 park admission (up to 4 in group). All redemptions will take place at the front gate.

St. Louis Wheel -- Veterans and active-duty military ride for free on November 11 .

Southwest ® is committed to making the military travel experience as easy as possible, in and out of uniform. That's why we're updating our military boarding policy to include out of uniform military travelers. Beginning September 22, 2022, we invite all active-duty military members with I.D. who did not receive an “A” boarding group to board between the A and B groups.

Patriotism runs deep at Southwest Airlines ® , and we are proud of all those who serve. When it comes to our military boarding policy, we invite active-duty members of the U.S. Military (with valid military I.D.) who did not receive an “A” boarding pass to board between the A and B groups.

Military baggage and cargo

Military Exception: Exceptions are made for active-duty military Customers. No fee is charged for additional pieces of baggage. Active-duty military Customers must have their current, valid military I.D. to receive the exemption.

Military Customers traveling on active duty will be exempt from the two-piece baggage limit and will not be subject to excess, oversize, or overweight baggage charges, provided that none of the pieces of baggage exceeds 100 pounds in weight and 80 inches in size (L+W+H). Bags in excess of 80 inches cannot be checked as baggage but can be shipped as cargo if the Customer is a TSA Known Shipper.

• A valid United States Uniformed Services Active Duty Identification Card must be presented at the time of check-in for military personnel.
• In total, a ticketed Customer (including military Customers) may not check more than 20 pieces of baggage per flight.
• Note: Dependents traveling without the active-duty military member are subject to normal excess, oversized, and overweight charges .

Southwest Airlines is proud to offer military and government fares. To book a military fare, please call 1-800-I-FLY-SWA (1-800-435-9792) or visit a Southwest ticket counter, as these fares are not available on Southwest.com. Rapid Rewards points cannot be redeemed to purchase government and military fares.

Military fares

• United States military personnel on active duty (including reservists, National Guard members, and Coast Guard members with active orders, cadets/midshipmen attending the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Military Academy [West Point], and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy) and their authorized dependents are eligible for Military fares.

Government fares

• Enjoy automatic check-in 36 hours in advance of your scheduled departure with EarlyBird Check-In, now included in our YCA government fare.*
• Federal Government (GVT) Fares are not available on Southwest.com and may only be purchased through an eligible federal government personnel’s authorized travel management system, travel agency, or commercial travel office or through the Southwest Government Reservation Desk by calling 1-888-871-8167. Eligible federal government personnel should utilize their agency’s preferred channel for purchasing a ticket.
• State Government (GST) Fares are not available on Southwest.com and may only be purchased through an eligible state government personnel’s authorized travel agency or through the Southwest Government Reservation Desk by calling 1-888-871-8167. Eligible state government personnel should utilize their agency’s preferred channel for purchasing a ticket.

*EarlyBird Check-In means you will automatically be checked in to your flight 36 hours prior to scheduled departure. YCA fares must be ticketed 36 or more hours prior to scheduled departure in order to receive EarlyBird Check-In. For Anytime fares purchased between 36 and 24 hours, the boarding position assignment process has begun so this may impact the boarding position assigned to you. If you purchase an Anytime fare within 24 hours of your flight’s scheduled departure, you will not receive the EarlyBird Check-In benefit. In an irregular operation situation, the boarding position is not guaranteed.

Traveling with military working dogs

Military working dogs.

• Military working dogs (MWDs) can travel on Southwest as part of a military working dog team (MWDT). A MWDT includes a trained military handler and a trained canine.

Law enforcement/search and rescue dogs

• Southwest Airlines accepts fully trained law enforcement service dogs trained in explosives or drug detection (or other specific functions) and search and rescue dogs for transportation, without charge, when accompanied by their respective handlers on official business. Each Customer traveling with a law enforcement or search and rescue dog must present a letter of mission and a copy of the animal’s certification. In accordance with federal safety regulations, the dog(s) must be positioned so as not to obstruct Customers’ prompt evacuation in the unlikely event of an emergency. In addition, law enforcement and search and rescue dogs may not occupy a seat or sit in an emergency exit row.

Does southwest offer military and government fares.

Yes. Southwest Airlines is proud to offer military and government fares. To book a military fare, please call 1-800-I-FLY-SWA (1-800-435-9792) or visit a Southwest ticket counter, as these fares are not available on Southwest.com. Rapid Rewards points cannot be redeemed to purchase Government and Military fares.

• Military dependents ages two through 11 years old must be accompanied by a military Customer or a military-dependent Customer at least 12 years of age.
• Note: Customers must carry and present a valid United States Armed Forces identification at the time of check-in. A military-dependent Customer 12 years or older must carry and present a card that displays their status as an active-duty military dependent.

What’s your military baggage policy?

For all Southwest Customers, two bags fly free*! Military Exception: Exceptions are made for active-duty military Customers. No fee is charged for additional pieces of baggage. Active-duty military Customers must have their current, valid military I.D. to receive the exemption.

What’s your military boarding policy?

When it comes to our military boarding policy, we invite active-duty members of the U.S. military with valid military I.D. who did not receive an “A” boarding pass to board between the A and B groups.

Can Southwest help transport a fallen soldier?

Yes. We are proud to honor our fallen soldiers.

Please fill out the military human remains booking form so that we can coordinate the security screening of any escorts and/or honor guards and clearance for planeside hearse access. After completing this form, please call the human remains booking line to make your booking at 1 (888) 922-9525.

All bookings must be made 24 hours before the requested departure time.

Can I bring a military working dog (MWD) with me?

Breed types and travel.

Southwest has no restrictions of the primary breeds (Belgian Malinios, Dutch Shepherd, Labrador, and German Shepherd) used in the military working dog (MWD) program.

MWDs can travel on Southwest as part of a Military Working Dog Team (MWDT). A MWDT includes a trained military handler and a trained canine.

Carrier retains the right, at its sole discretion, to refuse to transport any dog that exhibits aggressive behavior or any other characteristics that appear to Carrier to be incompatible with air travel at the airport, in the boarding gate area, or onboard the aircraft.

Reservations and staff interaction

Once tasked with a mission requiring airline travel, the assigned handler utilizes the online Defense Travel System (DTS) to schedule MWDT travel and generate orders. Handlers making the reservation, or an assisting kennel master/supervisor, will follow up directly with Southwest Customer Service to confirm the reservation and verify the traveling MWD's information.

• The military member can contact Southwest Customer Service directly or ask their commercial travel office (CTO) or travel management company (TMC) to contact Southwest via the Government Hotline 877-633-4425 to verify the reservations. Southwest can only support a CTO or TMC representative when using the hotline.
• Only refer to the canine as a military working dog. Do not use “service animal” or other terminology to describe the MWD. The reservation notes must include the MWD's name and tattoo number.

When speaking with Customer Service, the handler may purchase a second seat for the MWD. The second seat allows additional floor space for the MWD and improved readiness upon arrival at the mission location. The MWD will not occupy the seat.

At check-in, the handler provides their Department of Defense (DOD) I.D. and a copy (paper or electronic) of their DD Form 1610 (Request and Authorization for Temporary Duty Travel of DOD Personnel) or Permanent Change of Station (PCS Order), which will include the MWD's name and tattoo number.

• A Temporary Duty (TDY) or PCS Order, DOD I.D., and government reservation together serve as indicators of official travel for the handler and MWD. The handler is not required to provide additional identification to validate official travel or status as an MWDT.
• The handler is responsible for having appropriate health certifications and supporting documentation required for MWDT travel.

Labeling and uniform travel requirements

The MWD may wear a harness with "Do not pet" and will wear a boxed muzzle, which are travel uniform items for a DOD MWD. Southwest does not require a muzzle for behaved animals and recognizes the MWD's muzzle does not indicate negative behavior but rather a DOD requirement. Likewise, DOD MWD labeling conventions for kennels/crates of "Danger" or "Caution" do not indicate a behavior issue but rather a DOD requirement. Planning resources

Southwest only allows animal in-cabin travel. For this reason, mission planning using Southwest flights mitigates risks associated with weather/heat embargo concerns associated with underwing/cargo animal transport.

Contacting Southwest Customer Service is the primary means to access assistance. In addition, Southwest.com provides 24/7 access to current requirements for MWD travel.

DOD MWD and Southwest recognize that unique circumstances may present themselves and encourage members/Staff to elevate concerns or opportunities using appropriate company or MWD functional leadership channels.

Many theme parks offer military members and veterans free admission (in some cases, throughout the year) and some extend that offer to their family members, including:

• Legoland (Florida) : Active-duty service members receive free admission every day of the year; veterans and military family members receive 60% off tickets.
• Legoland (California) : Active military members can receive a 10% discount on admission throughout the year.
• Colonial Williamsburg : (Virginia.) Veterans, active-duty military and their immediate dependents receive free admission on either Memorial Day weekend or Veterans Day weekend, in addition to a 25% discount off a single-day admission ticket for themselves and dependents throughout the year.
• Mystic Aquarium : (Mystic, Conn.) Active-duty military receive free admission.
• Crayola Experience : (Plano, Texas.). All veterans, active and retired military members receive free admission throughout November; immediate family members receive 25% off admission.
• Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Gardens : All members of the military — active and retired — receive free admission to the zoo on Veterans Day, in addition to $5 off adults and child admission.
• Birmingham Zoo : Free admission for military and dependents on both Memorial Day weekend and Nov. 9-11 for Veterans Day .
• Aquarium of the Pacific : (Long Beach, Calif.) On Nov. 11, all veterans and military personnel receive free admission.

Free admission to national parks

Any visitors to any one of the 400 National Parks will receive free entry on Nov. 11, not just veterans. Additionally, many of the parks host Veterans Day-related events, including in-person and virtual ceremonies, parades, concerts and service projects, a list of which can be found here .

Free haircuts and car washes

Veterans and active, inactive or retired military personnel can get a free haircut on Veterans Day at Great Clips, which has more than 4,400 franchises in the U.S. and Canada. If you are not quite due for another haircut, stop in at the shop to pick up a certificate that you can redeem from Nov. 12 through Dec. 10, 2021.

If your car is in need of a nice cleaning, there are more than 1,600 car washes that will wash your car for free for veterans and service personnel thanks to the nonprofit Grace For Vets, which has given more than 3 million free car washes since 2003.

Many restaurants honor active military members and veterans by offering discounted or free meals, including the following national chains:

• Applebee's : Active-duty military and veterans and their families receive 10% off their bill year-round, but veterans get a free meal annually on Veterans Day.
• BJ's Restaurant Brewhouse : On Veterans Day, all current and former military will receive a free entree plus a free Dr. Pepper.
• Chili's : On Nov. 11, all veterans and active-duty military members will receive a free Veterans Day meal.
• Denny's : All active, non-active and retired military personnel will receive a free Grand Slam breakfast on Veterans Day.
• Fogo de Chão : Military veterans and active-duty personnel will receive 50% off their meal – and up to three guests dining will get 10% off their meal – on Nov. 11.
• Ninety Nine Restaurant & Pub : On Veterans Day, between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., all veterans and active-duty military will receive a free lunch from a special Veterans Day menu.
• Olive Garden : Olive Garden will offer veterans and active-duty military personnel who dine in a free entrée from a special menu on Nov. 11.
• Outback Steakhouse : All servicemen and women receive a 10% heroes discount daily, in addition to a free Bloomin' Onion and Coca-Cola product on Nov. 11 for active and retired military.
• Red Lobster : On Nov. 11, all veterans, active-duty military and reservists will receive a free appetizer or dessert, in addition to Military Mondays, where all active-duty military personnel receive 10% off their meal every Monday.
• Texas de Brazil : Veterans get 25% off dinner between Nov. 8-11.

Discounted hotel rates

U.S. military personnel are offered discounted rates at many hotels throughout the entire year:

• Best Western : Veterans, military and government personnel enjoy discounts at or below per diem rates at Best Western Hotels & Resorts throughout North America.
• Choice Hotels : Active-duty or reserve military members, retired military, National Guard and U.S. Coast Guard members are all eligible for Lifetime Gold Elite status with the Choice Privileges rewards program. The hotel will also award military 2,500 bonus points after their next qualifying stay. They can also save up to 15% on your next hotel stay by booking in advance through their Feed a Vet program , which provides free meals to current and past members.
• Hilton Hotels & Resorts : State, federal and U.S. military employees can take advantage of the Government/Military rate box and receive discounted hotel rates. The hotel chain also offers 10% savings for active and retired military, veterans and their families on leisure stays.
• InterContinental Hotels Group : With the IHG Military Appreciation Rate, active or retired U.S. or Canadian military personnel, or dependent family members, will receive discounted rates at participating IHG hotels across Canada, the United States, Central and South America.
• Wyndham Hotels & Resorts : Military members, veterans and their families receive up to 15% off the best available rate at participating Wyndham Hotel Group locations. Additionally, military guests are automatically upgraded to Wyndham Rewards Gold membership and get 1,000 bonus points after completing their first qualifying stay.
• Marriott : Discounted federal, state and local government rates are available to government and military personnel.
• Motel 6 : All active and retired military personnel and their families can receive up to a 10% discount at over 1,400 locations.
• Red Roof Inn : Government employees, military, veterans and retired military receive 10% off for government and military official travel as well as leisure travel.

Airfare discounts and benefits

Similar to discounted hotel rates, military personnel also receive discounted airfare on select major carriers. Just note these discounts are typically discluded from promotional or web fares, where you might actually find less expensive prices. Many airlines will also extend free checked bags or other benefits to military personnel.

Alaska Airlines : Active-duty personnel and their dependents get up to five free checked bags up to 70 pounds each, in addition to other benefits, including preboarding privileges and a 15% discount on food purchased in flight, complimentary Alaska Lounge day passes for active-duty U.S. military personnel who are traveling on orders and a Veterans Advantage discount in booking flights.

American Airlines : Government or military fares are offered in some markets, but you will have to call to book. Veterans and their families can save up to 10% on domestic and international flights by enrolling in VetRewards and booking through Veterans Advantage. Active U.S. military personnel, traveling on orders, can check five bags for free; those traveling for leisure can check three bags for free. Active military members can also receive special perks such as early boarding and access to the Admirals Club . TPG has even been told that American Airlines allows active U.S. military members (and their family members traveling on the same reservation) to receive complimentary access to preferred seats and main cabin extra seats from an airport agent, if available.

Delta Air Lines : For active-duty members of the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard, Delta provides exclusive discounts on travel. To book personal travel or travel on military orders, call the Delta Military and Government desk at 800-221-1212. On military orders, you can check up to five bags for free and two to three bags for personal travel (two bags if traveling on in Basic Economy, Main Cabin, or Delta Comfort; three bags if traveling in first class, Delta Premium Select, or Delta One). Active-duty military personnel will also receive preboarding access and military members and U.S. State Department foreign service officers can check their pets as baggage when traveling on active transfer orders.

Frontier Airlines : U.S. military passengers with active-duty status will receive one free personal item, one free carry-on bag and two free checked bags.

Hawaiian Airlines : Baggage fees are waived for U.S. military personnel — travelers on military orders (including qualified dependents) will receive up to five bags for free; those on personal travel will receive up to two bags for free.

JetBlue : U.S. active-duty military, retired military veterans, National Guard and Reserve members can receive a 5% discount on all JetBlue flights. There are two offers: Veterans Advantage and Active Duty Military Personnel . Active-duty personnel traveling for duty (and their dependents) can check up to five bags for free. Active-duty personnel traveling for leisure (and their dependents) can check up to two bags for free.

Southwest : Southwest offers special tickets for military and government personnel, but you must call to book. All Southwest passengers receive two checked bags for free, but military passengers traveling on active duty or permanent change of stations orders will not be subject to excess, oversize, or overweight baggage charges, as long as none of the pieces exceed 100 pounds and 80 inches.

Spirit Airlines : For active-duty military, Spirit will provide two free checked bags and a free carry-on, in addition to the included free personal item .

United Airlines : U.S. military veterans, active-duty military, National Guard and Reserve members and their families will receive up to a 5% discount on tickets purchased on United.com (the flight must be operated by United or United Express). You must register with Veterans Advantage first to take advantage of this discount. Active-duty military personnel traveling on official orders or for pleasure can also check extra baggage free of charge. In some cases, military dependents will also be included. Additionally, active-duty members will receive preboarding and access to United Club locations .

 Veterans 

Injured service members/veterans requesting assistance will have their travel information and type of assistance required provided to the departing/arriving U.S. airports to ensure they receive proper assistance at the security checkpoint. Veterans who are not enrolled in TSA PreCheck™ will be screened in standard screening lanes.

Yes. Members of the U.S. Armed Forces and DoD Federal civilians can use TSA PreCheck® benefits for both official and personal travel. Be sure to update all travel reservations with your DoD ID number listed as the Known Traveler Number (KTN)  to enjoy benefits. The KTN also can be added when booking reservations online via a participating airline website, by phone with an airline reservation agent or with the travel management company making reservations. Save your KTN to any frequent flyer profiles, employer booking systems or online travel websites that you use.

 Yes. Cadets and midshipmen of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, and U.S. Coast Guard Academy receive free TSA PreCheck® benefits. Add your DoD ID number in the "Known Traveler Number" (KTN) field when booking flight reservations.

No. All members of the U.S. Armed Forces must include their DoD ID number in the Known Traveler Number field when making flight reservations and a TSA PreCheck® indicator must be visible on your boarding pass. The airlines will print a TSA PreCheck® indicator (such as TSAPRECHK, TSA PRE, or TSA PreCheck®) on boarding passes to help you recognize when you are eligible for TSA PreCheck® on your flight.

You cannot access the TSA PreCheck® lane by presenting your CAC or other documentation.

Yes, U.S. citizens and/or lawful permanent resident cadets and students of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and six State Maritime Academies are eligible to receive free TSA PreCheck benefits through the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) program.  Students enrolled at these academies are eligible to enroll for TWIC, and most U.S. Merchant Mariners are required to maintain a valid TWIC to obtain their Merchant Mariner Credential. When making an airline reservation, enter the Credential Identification Number (CIN) which is the eight-digit number printed under the bottom left of the barcode on the back of the TWIC® card in the Known Traveler Number (KTN) field. For cardholders with the newest version of the TWIC card, the CIN is also embossed on the front of the card.

No, TSA PreCheck® benefits do not continue after leaving DoD.  Be sure to enroll upon retirement or leaving DoD to continue enjoying TSA PreCheck® benefits .

DoD federal civilian employees must opt-in to TSA PreCheck® by visiting the milConnect website. After selecting the “My Profile” and the “CIV” menu tab when logged into the website, users will be guided through the opt-in process for TSA PreCheck®. Civilian employees need to opt-in only once. Members of the U.S. Armed Forces do not need to opt-in.

Enter the DoD ID number from the back of your common access card (CAC) into the “Known Traveler Number” field of your flight reservations or when updating your Defense Travel System profile for official travel.

DoD federal civilian employees must opt-in via milConnect before using their Known Traveler Number.  

• The unit must declare weapons and ammunition to the aircraft operator. 
• Weapons must be unloaded. 
• Weapons must be collectively secured in a crate and banded or individually locked in a hard-sided case. 
• Ammunition must also be securely packed in fiber (such as cardboard), wood or metal boxes, or other packaging specifically designed to carry small amounts of ammunition. 
• Firearm magazines/clips for packing ammunition must be completely and securely enclosing any ammunition (e.g., by securely covering the exposed portions of the magazine or by securely placing the magazine in a pouch, holder or holster). 
• You may carry ammunition in the same hard-sided case as the firearm, if you pack it as described above. 
• A unit representative must submit the unit's official travel orders and an inventory of weapons and ammunition being transported. 
• The unit representative must certify to TSA in writing that the weapons are unloaded. 
• Contact AskTSA or TSA Contact Center with questions you have regarding TSA firearm regulations and for clarification on what you may or may not transport in your carry-on or checked baggage.

Still, there are many programs and perks that exist for veterans. Some of them fly a bit more under the radar, so we've highlighted them below to make sure every veteran has a chance to explore their options.

1. Free Tax Prep

Not only can veterans take advantage of property tax exemptions , but they can also reap a few other tax-related benefits. The IRS partners with the VA to offer free tax preparation services for veterans, and they take it a step further with free filing. 

2. Disney World's Shades of Green

Disney World has expanded its reach so much that it really does seem to be living up to its name. With so many resorts under its moniker, not everyone knows about Shades of Green  — Disney's resort that's dedicated exclusively to military members and their families. Eligibility for the resort includes different tiers, but at its root, it exists as a place for veterans to enjoy a Disney vacation at a lower price point. 

If you're planning to take advantage of the resort's discount rates, you'll want to plan ahead, paying close attention to what offers are available. The resort's "Salute to Our Veterans" promotion, for instance, allows any honorably discharged veterans to vacation at Shades of Green during January and September.

3. Free Space-A Travel

Veterans and their families can travel with Space-A flights – formally known as Military Airlift Command or MAC flights – to take advantage of cheaper flights. Military flights can be more unpredictable than standard commercial flights, but for travelers who have room for flexibility and a desire to save money, they are worth looking into.

4. National Parks Pass

Current military members and their dependents, veterans, and Gold Star Families (family members of fallen soldiers who died in the line of duty) can get into national parks for free through the National Park Service's Free Access Program . Eligible applicants can receive annual or lifetime passes.

5. Long-Term Care

Many veterans qualify for valuable long-term care benefits through the VA . These benefits can help with daily living activities, medical care, and support, whether needed at home, in a community setting, or in a nursing home. Depending on your needs and eligibility, options may include skilled home health care, adult day health programs, homebound meal delivery, or assistance with bathing, dressing, and medication management. 

For veterans with service-connected disabilities, financial assistance may be available to cover some or all of these costs. Just remember that enrollment in VA healthcare is necessary to access most long-term care services.

6. Mortgage Help

There are a variety of programs to help veterans secure a mortgage, and the cornerstone of this support is the VA Home Loan program . The program offers competitive rates, no down payment requirements, and waived insurance, making it significantly more accessible than traditional loans. 

State and local programs, along with veterans service organizations, provide down payment grants, homebuyer education, and advocacy specific to veterans' needs.

Deported veterans struggle to access VA services, study finds

Deported veterans face significant barriers accessing a variety of veteran-centric services, including health care benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs , according to a study by the University of California-Berkeley School of Law.

The study, released on April 8 by the Veterans Law Practicum at UC-Berkeley, noted deficiencies in two pathways that allow deported veterans to access VA programs: humanitarian parole and the VA Foreign Medical Program .

“The law promises veterans access to the benefits and care many need to survive, no matter where they are in the world,” the report states. “To breathe life into this promise, we urgently need change. Otherwise, deported veterans will continue to suffer and die in exile.”

Humanitarian parole granted by the Department of Homeland Security allows deported veterans temporary reentry to the United States to access VA health care. However, applications for humanitarian parole are often denied and the cost of travel can be “prohibitive,” according to the report.

“There are a lot of deported veterans who are not able to subsist in the countries to which they’re deported,” Eric Provost, a Navy veteran and one of the authors of the report, told Military Times. “They don’t have access to things like VA health care, which they may be entitled to. A year just isn’t enough to ensure continuity of care and that they’re getting the treatment they need.”

The VA’s Foreign Medical Program, which provides health care from non-VA providers overseas, presents another opportunity for deported veterans to receive care. However, the report noted the program only covers treatment for “disabilities previously recognized as service-connected by the VA,” and many veterans are deported before they complete the disability compensation process.

There is also the question of the program’s reach in smaller countries, Provost added. While veterans have more options to apply for the program in larger countries, such as Mexico, other veterans, such as those residing in smaller nations — Honduras or El Salvador, for example — struggle to apply, Provost said.

“All veterans have access to [VA] benefits, regardless of their immigration status,” Provost told Military Times. “The fact that they’re deported has no bearing on whether they should be getting those benefits.”

The report recommended granting humanitarian parole more liberally, expanding the Foreign Medical program to include non-service-connected conditions and not requiring upfront payment for care, among other suggestions.

Mixed policies for non-citizen vets

The Immigration and Nationality Act allows for non-citizen service members to acquire citizenship if they are “lawful permanent residents” — also known as green card holders.

However, some veterans do not apply for citizenship — or satisfy the criteria for it, according to a 2019 Government Accountability Office report . “Bureaucratic and logistical obstacles” also hinder some veterans’ abilities to file for citizenship, the report stated.

Approximately 94,000 veterans do not have U.S. citizenship, leaving them vulnerable to deportation if they violate certain laws, regardless of their service record, according to the National Immigration Forum .

Historically, policies involving the deportation of veterans have not always been closely followed.

The 2019 GAO report found that Immigration and Customs Enforcement did not follow its own policies on tracking cases of non-citizen veterans who may be deported. Between fiscal year 2013 and 2018, 250 veterans were under threat of deportation , and another 92 had been deported.

The GAO recommended that ICE collect and maintain complete data on veterans currently under threat of deportation, or who have already been deported.

President Joe Biden in February 2021 signed an executive order mandating government agencies to review their immigration policies and propose new changes. In July 2021, the Department of Homeland Security and the VA announced the creation of the Immigrant Military Members and Veterans Initiative .

As of December 2023, 93 deported veterans have returned to the U.S. through the program, according to the Veterans Law Practicum report.

There are legislative opportunities, too, to solve the gaps in accessing benefits for deported veterans, researchers noted. The report’s authors specifically call for the passage of the Veteran Service Recognition Act. Some provisions in the legislation include conducting a study on the number of veterans deported from the U.S. and better equipping military procedures to naturalize service members, according to the report.

So far, lawmakers have not voted on the legislation. The bill passed the House in 2022, but did not receive a vote in the Senate. It was reintroduced by a bipartisan group of House lawmakers in July 2023, although it has yet to receive a vote in the lower chamber.

State-of-the-art veterans clinic in West Oahu seen as a game changer for military families

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Friday is the grand opening of the long-awaited Daniel Kahikina Akaka Veterans Affairs Clinic in Kapolei.

HNN got an exclusive first look at the modern facility more than a decade in the making.

Veterans advocates say the clinic is a life changer for military families on the leeward side and across the Pacific.

“Our investment in this new 88,000 square foot facility, the $130 million that is taken to build this. This is our commitment to veterans in the Pacific Islands for the 21st century. This is our commitment to make sure that we honor our veterans, that we give them the care that they need,” said Veterans Affairs Pacific Islands Health Care System (VAPIHCS) Director Dr. Adam Robinson, Jr.

The new site means veterans like James Sewell of Kapolei won’t have to drive two hours to the VA clinic at Tripler Army Medical Center anymore.

“Traffic is bad in the morning, and in the evening. So it’s better that it’s here. I can just come from work and come right over here and get my services,” Sewell said.

It’s a huge relief for many who rely on the VA and have been frustrated with service wait times, traffic and parking challenges.

Parking shouldn’t be an issue at the Akaka clinic, with 528 parking spots total — 43 are reserved for disabled veterans and 19 are for electric vehicle charging. Patients can also use the clinic’s free valet service.

“We’ll have our red coat ambassadors here, and they can actually help them out of their car and into the facility. But one of their main functions is to guide them to where they need to be since it’s a new facility,” said clinic chief April Seghorn, who gave HNN a tour.

The clinic offers primary care and specialty services, including mental healthcare, eyecare, dental, prosthetics, women’s health, pharmacy and audiology.

“We have four state of the art audiology booths for hearing testing for the veterans. And so we’re going to have six audiologists here,” Seghorn said. “Our wait times right now are about 78 days. So this will cut down tremendously time to be seen.”

“Most veterans do come out with some type of hearing loss due to being in combat or just going to the range and all of the loud noises that they’re around,” she said.

The physical therapy areas include modern equipment, such as an anti-gravity treadmill, and outdoor recreation.

Radiology will also house the VA’s first MRI scanner in the Pacific, minimizing the need to travel to the continent.

Named after the first U.S. Senator of Native Hawaiian ancestry and fellow veteran, Daniel Akaka, the clinic serves veterans from across the region, including Guam, Saipan, Tinian, Rota and American Samoa.

“Now that we have authority through COFA legislation that Congress recently passed, we can actually have veterans from the freely associated states here,” Dr. Robinson said. “That includes Marshall Islands, that includes Palau, and that also includes Micronesia. So this is a big deal.”

Akaka’s son Dr. Gerard Akaka, a veteran and physician, said the West Oahu clinic is badly needed.

“Access is a thing,” he said. “It’s not easy to get transportation. If you don’t have it, and if you’re dependent on others, like your kids who have full time jobs, it’s just not easy. To provide such a facility with such capability and beauty in that area close to home for them, where they don’t have to deal with traffic and parking and other things that are really our barriers, I think it’s a real blessing for them.”

When asked what he hopes the center will mean for the future of healthcare in Hawaii and the Pacific, Akaka said: “I’ll put it in a way that maybe Dad would say it. My hope is that when they know they’re going to go to that center, they will smile. They will look forward to it. Because they know that they’ll be greeted with aloha, that they’ll feel safe in that place. And that the ‘ano or the feeling in the spirit of that place will be a reflection of him, which was one of aloha and and care and love.”

“For those who have been injured, from war or in the line of duty, thank you so much on behalf of our family and for the people of Hawaii, because they did help to protect us at various times of need so big thanks to them. And again, my hope and our family’s hope and Dad’s hope is that this will be a place of safety of healing, a place that will help them,” Akaka added.

The grand opening starts at 10 a.m. Friday, followed by a public open house and VA enrollment opportunity from 1-4 p.m.

Patient services begin on Monday, April 8. Hours are Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

The Akaka clinic is located at 91-1051 Franklin D. Roosevelt Ave. in Kapolei, across from the Costco. The VA clinic in Queen’s West will close on Friday.

There’s a free courtesy shuttle for veterans to/from select landmarks, while Veteran Transportation Services (VTS) offers free pick-up from eligible veterans’ homes who live as far out as Mililani going north and into Waikiki, though not past Hawaii Kai. For more information, call 808-433-7982.
