Maren Morris Says 2023 Was a Year of 'Letting Go': 'I'm on This Precipice of Massive, Massive Change'

Last year, the "My Church" singer split from ex-husband Ryan Hurd and announced she was stepping away from aspects of the country genre

Maren Morris is reflecting on 2023 as she looks toward the future.

Before the "My Church" singer is honored with the visionary award at the upcoming  2024  Billboard  Women in Music  ceremony, she spoke to the outlet about the past year of her life and career — during which she's gotten divorced from ex-husband Ryan Hurd and announced she's stepping away from many aspects of the country genre.

Explaining what 2023 was about for her, Morris, 33, said, "I’m going to sound so Pinterest, but I think just letting go. Or changeover."

"I feel like I’m on this precipice of massive, massive change. And the music’s certainly reflecting that," added the Grammy winner, who's working on new music with the likes of producer Jack Antonoff .

"In 2024, not that I’ve got an album done yet, but by the week [it’s] getting clearer and clearer what the theme and the sonics are," teased Morris. "I’m not overthinking. I’m not trying to be micromanage-y like I typically am."

Many changes have occurred in Morris' life over the last 12 months. In a September 2023 interview with the Los Angeles Times , the "'80s Mercedes" performer announced she was planning to "take a step back" from country music , explaining that she’s felt “very, very distanced” from industry and its politics.

Leading up to the announcement, Morris had caught flack from some conservative listeners for supporting the  LGBTQ+ community , taking a stand for the  Black Lives Matter movement , and  critiquing  people like  Jason Aldean ’s wife  Brittany Kerr Aldean  for making transphobic comments.

During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live  with  Andy Cohen two months after the LA Times interview, she clarified that she’s “not left country music” entirely because the genre will always fuel her sound. However, she explained that she wants to “leave behind” the “toxic parts” of the industry.

In October 2023, Morris filed in Tennessee for  a dissolution of marriage  from Hurd, and the filing cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the divorce. After the pair (who share son Hayes, 4 this month) reached a settlement agreement in early January, their divorce was finalized  by a judge at the end of the same month.

Elsewhere in the new interview with Billboard , Morris expressed hope to find "joy and inner peace" after a period of time where she felt they were out of reach. "I wish it wasn’t such a struggle for me. Not that I think so highly of myself, but I wish I didn’t have such a throbbing heartbeat for world suffering," she said.

"I sometimes wish I could just put my head in the sand and enjoy my privilege, but I don’t want to do that. That’s not the life for me," added the star. "But I think I’m letting go of having everyone around me put their feet to the fire. I can only focus on myself and align myself with people that have the same wants and morals."

Morris then declared, "I want this year to be about my own happiness — becoming a better mom and boss and human and writer and all the things."

At the 2024  Billboard  Women in Music event at YouTube Theater in Los Angeles on March 6, Morris will be honored alongside  Kylie Minogue ,  Ice Spice , Charli XCX , Young Miko, Victoria Monét, NewJeans, TEMS and Luísa Sonza.

When Maren Morris' 'My Church' started popping onto radio stations in 2016, country fans could've never known that this petite little blonde girl from Texas would seen establish herself as one of the leading ladies in the genre.

Across her discography, she's issued three full-length albums – two of which have topped the country albums chart – and sent 11 singles to both pop and country radio, many of them soaring to impressive heights and securing her three No. 1s.

With more than 30 awards and accolades to her name, including ACMs, CMAs, Billboard Awards and a prestigious Grammy trophy, Morris has also spent much of the last decade rigorously touring the world both on her own headlining treks and as support for the likes of Keith Urban, Sam Hunt, Niall Horan, Miranda Lambert and The Chicks.

With nearly a decade worth of music at her disposal, Morris has developed a live show chock full of arena ready singalongs, tearjerker ballads and plenty of her beloved country hits.

Usually ending the night on the high note of her aforementioned debut single, Morris' sets traditionally take attendees through a masterful cross-section of the singer-songwriter's catalogue, including some of her early hits that have nearly become Morris standards, including 'Rich,' '80s Mercedes' and the screamable 'Drunk Girls Don't Cry.'

Not to mention the record-breaking 2018 smash hit of 'The Middle,' which features DJs Zedd and Grey and would be deeply remiss if not included in her live show.

While there's plenty of upbeat and energized zingers across her albums, Morris artistry also excels when it comes to the heart wrenching gut punches. From older weepers like 'I Wish I Was,' 'Once' and 'I Could Use A Love Song,' the country crooner also provides plenty of newer heartbreakingly beautiful tunes, including 'I Can't Love You Anymore' and the more hopeful 'To Hell & Back.'

For fans who are newer to jump on the Maren Morris train, there's plenty of newer material on display at her headlining shows, too. Standout tunes from her newest record, Humble Quest , are alive and well on her 2023 dates, including 'Circles Around This Town,' 'Nervous' and 'Detour.'

Morris' award-winning album, Girl , also gets its much-deserved moment in the spotlight, often showcasing some of its many career-defining hits such as the title track, 'The Bones,' 'RSVP' and the Brothers Osborne-graced 'All My Favorite People.'

For the remainder of 2023, Morris will join country trio The Chicks on their Canadian dates . She will also be on the bill for a handful of festivals and one-offs, including Coastal Country Jam, GoldenSky Festival and more.

Since the release of their debut album, WIDE OPEN SPACES in 1998, The Chicks music has stirred emotions in fans around the world, making them one of the biggest and most influential bands of our time.

Their on-stage reputation has catapulted them to sell over $100 million worth of concert tickets, while outspoken songs like "Goodbye, Earl" and "Not Ready To Make Nice" make it clear that this power trio plays by their own rules.

In November 2016, The Chicks performed "Daddy Lessons" alongside Beyoncé at the 50th Anniversary of the Country Music Association Awards and released a studio version of the track to digital outlets the following day.

In 2019, The Chicks returned to the airwaves as a feature on Taylor Swift's "Soon You'll Get Better," one of the leading tracks off Swift's seventh studio album, LOVER. After 14 nearly years, The Chicks released their fifth studio album GASLIGHTER, on July 17, 2020.

Amazing show.

Raelynn was fabulous and I really enjoyed the lyrics of her songs.

Maren was outstanding and although grander and less personal than when she played the O2 Shepherds Bush, she made sure fans got what they came to see. Great night

Be ready for a sing along because she's big on audience involvement!

I had an amazing time and definitely plan on seeing her next time she's in town.

I met some really nice strangers at the show and we even danced together.

I had a blast! Casideepope has a killer voice and two really fun songs. Maren was a freaking goddess and knew how to run the show. Even the guitarists were fun to watch and into it. Loved the show but wished more of the crowed would have moved or done anything than standing straight still - my group sang and swayed which was fun! Maren is so good and the show went so well I would see her again. My only complaint is the show started late and on a tuesday annoyed me because i’m a student and had school the next day.

'The Chicks World Tour 2023' Is Kicking Off With Maren Morris & More

By Kelly Fisher

February 14, 2023

maren morris australia tour 2023

The Chicks are officially set to kick off a massive world tour in 2023. The iconic trio posted a lengthy list of performance stops on their social media channels on Tuesday morning (February 14), and revealed a star-studded list of special guests who are set to join them on select dates.

“Thank you to all our fans for making last Summer so fun! It’s time to get the party going again! We can’t wait to see everyone!” The Chicks — Natalie Maines ,  Martie Maguire  and  Emily Strayer  — said as they announced “The Chicks World Tour 2023” on Instagram on Tuesday.

Special guests on the tour include Wild Rivers (a Canadian trio already “counting down the days” until the tour kicks off), Ben Harper and Maren Morris , who deemed The Chicks her “heroes” and celebrated the announcement with a TikTok set to The Chicks’ iconic 1990s revenge anthem , “Goodbye Earl.”

The world tour is set to kick off in June, shortly after the “Ready to Run” artists take part in Willie Nelson ’s all-star 90th birthday celebration and perform a six-show residency in Las Vegas. The Chicks are set to take the stage at Zappos Theater, at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, the same 7,000-seat venue where other country artists — including  Keith Urban  and  Miranda Lambert  — have also hosted residencies. The Chicks said when they announced the Zappos Theater shows that they “hope our fans are ready for more in 2023 because we are not done! There is a lot more to come this year , and we are excited to get it all started in Las Vegas at the Zappos Theater this Spring.”

Here Is The Chicks’ World Tour Setlist For 2023

Megan Armstrong

In late July, The Chicks began the North American leg of their 2023 world tour with Ben Harper , Maren Morris , and Wild Rivers taking turns as the opener.

Unfortunately, shows in Nashville, Tennessee (which was supposed to take place on July 27), Knoxville, Tennessee (July 29), Greensboro, North Carolina (July 30), and Columbia, Maryland (August 2) have had to be rescheduled “due to an ongoing illness.” The Chicks were also forced to cancel their scheduled stop at Bethel Woods Center For The Arts in Bethel, New York.

The band revealed on Instagram that they will now visit Greensboro on August 8, Columbia on September 20, Knoxville on September 21, and Nashville on September 23. All forthcoming dates can be found here .

Maren Morris is reflecting on the past year of her life and career as she prepares to receive the visionary award at the upcoming 2024 Billboard Women in Music ceremony. The 33-year-old singer recently went through a divorce from ex-husband Ryan Hurd and announced her decision to step away from certain aspects of the country music genre.

Describing 2023 as a year of change and letting go, Morris shared her thoughts on the significant shifts happening in her life. She mentioned that she feels on the brink of massive change, with her music reflecting this transition as she collaborates with producer Jack Antonoff on new projects.

In a September 2023 interview, Morris revealed her intention to distance herself from the country music industry due to feeling disconnected from its politics. Despite facing criticism for her support of the LGBTQ+ community and the Black Lives Matter movement, Morris clarified that while she won't completely abandon country music, she aims to leave behind its toxic elements.

Following her divorce filing in October 2023, citing irreconcilable differences, Morris and Hurd finalized their divorce in January after reaching a settlement agreement. The couple shares a son, Hayes, who turned four years old recently.

In her latest interview with Billboard, Morris expressed a desire to find joy and inner peace after a challenging period. She emphasized the importance of focusing on her own happiness, striving to be a better mother, leader, and artist. Morris also highlighted her commitment to aligning herself with individuals who share similar values and aspirations.

Looking ahead to the Women in Music event in March 2024, where she will be honored alongside other notable artists, Morris is optimistic about the future and the creative opportunities that lie ahead.

Ice Spice Reveals Lana Del Rey Is One of Her All-Time Favorite Hitmakers: 'I'm Obsessed with Her'

The "Munch (Feelin' U)" rapper detailed some of her favorite artists in a 'Billboard' interview ahead of the publication's annual Women in Music event

Did you know that there's an Ice Spice in Lana Del Rey 's fanbase?

Before she's honored as the 2024 Billboard Women in Music Hitmaker at the upcoming March 6 ceremony, the "Munch (Feelin' U)" rapper opened up to the publication about her rise to fame and fellow hitmakers she admires as a fan — including Del Rey.

After offering a "shout-out" to past "iconic" Hitmaker honorees Charli XCX and Dolly Parton , Ice Spice named one of her favorites. "I would say Lana Del Rey," the Grammy nominee, 24, told Billboard . "I’m obsessed with her, and I feel like all of her songs are hits, even the ones that aren’t as big as the others."

She also mentioned Rihanna as an artist whose music she listens to, explaining that she owns vinyl records by both the "Umbrella" icon and Del Rey. However, her list of favorite artists didn't end there: "Taylor Swift. Of course, Nicki Minaj . Drake . The list is long!"

Last month, Ice Spice got to spend some time with Del Rey, 38, at a pre-Grammys gala honoring Jon Platt at the Beverly Hilton. Both stars also watched the 2024 Super Bowl from a suite at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas alongside stars including Swift, Blake Lively, Jason Kelce, RIOTUSA and Miles Teller .

Elsewhere in the "Deli" rapper's Billboard interview, she spoke about advice she's received from Swift, 34, with whom she collaborated on the remix of Midnights single "Karma" last year.

"When I was in the studio with Taylor, like, I’ll never forget that," said Ice Spice. "She told me, 'No matter what, just keep making music and everything’s going to be fine.'"

Since her debut in 2021, the "In Ha Mood" star has earned four top-10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and notched collabs with Swift, Minaj and PinkPantheress — but fans are awaiting her debut album, Y2K .

Ice Spice teased the upcoming project as some of her "best work," explaining that she's been looking for "a really hard beat" during the creative process.

"If the beat doesn’t instantly move me — like if I don’t physically feel the beat of the speakers — then I’m just going to keep moving on to the next one," she told the outlet. "But as soon as I know, I  know  I have that beat. It’s up from there."

At the 2024 Billboard Women in Music event at YouTube Theater in Los Angeles on March 6, Ice Spice will be honored alongside Kylie Minogue , Maren Morris , Charli XCX, Young Miko, Victoria Monét, NewJeans, TEMS and Luísa Sonza.

The Chicks Announce Massive 2023 World Tour with Maren Morris, Ben Harper, and More

On Tuesday (February 14th), country music group The Chicks announced their 2023 summer world tour.

The group revealed that the tour’s special guests will be Maren Morris , Wild Rivers, and Ben Harper. “Thank you to all our fans for making last Summer so fun! It’s time to get the party going again! We can’t wait to see everyone!” the band declared.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Chicks (@thechicks)

In a statement , The Chicks spoke about making their way to the UK and Europe during the 2023 tour. “We can’t wait to see everyone and play for all our fans across the pond,” the group gushed. “It’s been a long time coming and we can’t wait to get back!”

The tour is scheduled to kick off in Oslo, Norway on June 20th. The Chicks will perform throughout the UK and Europe through July 4th before heading to the U.S. for the tour’s North American leg. They will wrap up in the states on September 1st before heading to Canada for shows between September 5th and September 18th.

Morris is currently scheduled to open for The Chicks in the UK, Europe, and Canada. The U.S. leg will have Harper at nine shows while Wild Rivers will be at 12 shows. Tickets for the majority of U.S. dates will go on Saturday Thursday (February 16th) at 10 a.m. local time. The shows in Bethel, New York; Hershey, Pennsylvania; Columbus, Ohio; and Sioux Falls, North Dakota shows will go on sale next Friday (February 24th).

Prior to heading on the 2023 world tour, The Chicks are to perform their first-ever concert residency, The Chicks: Six Nights in Vegas. The performances will be at the Zappos Theater at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino on May 3rd, 5th, 6th, 10th, 12th, and 13th.

The Chicks’ Bandmates Martie Maguire and Emily Strayer Open Up About How They Approach Social Media These Days

During an October 2022 interview with the Austin Chronicle, The Chicks’ bandmates Martie Maguire and Emily Strayer spoke about how they, as well as fellow bandmate Natalie Maines, handle social media these days.

“Natalie has completely removed herself from not only social media, but email,” Maguire explained. “I’m so jealous because I hate how many emails I get.”

However, Maguire revealed that Strayer gets “sucked” into people directly messaging her and commenting on social media posts. “That can be good and bad,” Maguire said. When it comes to her approach to social media, Maguire admitted she just ignores everything. “I don’t really read comments. You know, I’m too sensitive. There are people out there just trolling to troll and being mean, and I don’t like when people are mean.”

Meanwhile, Strayer says the main issue she has with social media is getting sucked into home interior remodels. She also described Twitter as being a really mean place. “ thought I was off for like three years, but our management informed me that it didn’t take, so I’m on there, but haven’t done anything. I feel like Instagram is happy people being creative, for the most part – animal videos, kitty cats.”

Every surprise song Taylor Swift has performed on the ‘Eras Tour’ so far

During every "Eras Tour" concert, there comes a time that audiences are always waiting for: surprise song o'clock.

The Swiftie shorthand term refers to the point when Taylor Swift ditches the production of each era and returns to the stage with just a guitar and a piano. Onstage, Swift often refers to this as the "acoustic set." Usually, this consists of two songs that aren't part of the show's set list and differ each night of the tour.

At her latest show March 3 in Singapore, Swift wowed fans in the audience with a performance of "Long Story Short" from "Evermore" as a mashup with "The Story of Us" from "Speak Now."

For her second surprise song, she performed another mashup, this time combining "Clean" with "Evermore" on the piano.

Originally, Swift said she'd aim not to repeat surprise songs during the "Eras Tour," leaving fans to track each night's performances like detectives, watching their favorite songs get picked off in the lead up to their own concert date.

But after Swift announced that she " reset" the eligibility of all songs for 2024 and introduced twists — like three surprise songs or mashup performances — it's impossible to predict what she'll do next.

Intrepid Swifties keeping record of all the songs Swift has performed have noted that, while there are several songs that have been played multiple times, there are some songs that the singer has not played as a surprise track. Those include:

  • "Mary's Song"
  • "A Perfectly Good Heart"
  • "The Way I Loved You"
  • "Superstar"
  • "We Were Happy"
  • "That's When"
  • "Don't You"
  • "Bye Bye Baby"
  • "Girl At Home"
  • "Forever Winter"
  • "Sweeter Than Fiction"
  • "I Did Something Bad"
  • "London Boy"
  • "Soon You'll Get Better"
  • "It's Nice To Have a Friend"
  • "Only the Young"
  • "Beautiful Ghosts"
  • "Happiness"

Here's a list of all the surprise songs Swift has performed since the start of the "Eras Tour" in March 2023.
