Berlin is one of the most interesting cities in Europe, and certainly the one that has changed the most in the last 20 years. Cologne is home to one of the most impressive cathedrals in the world with a thriving art scene and some of the most high-spirited locals. Like all popular European destinations, Germany sees visitors throughout the year – rain, snow or shine. And all of these are a possibility depending on when you visit Germany. Every season in this country has its charm, as well as its pitfalls, so when to go depends on your travel type and what activities you`re interested in. Generally speaking, the best time to visit is during the `shoulder seasons` from March through May and from late October through November. The weather may be a bit chilly, but you`ll enjoy lower prices and fewer crowds. The summer months bring warm temperatures and lush landscape, but keep in mind, that it can get uncomfortably crowded. You will also need to be aware of the events and festivities that take place throughout the year that will bring in influx of tourist and increase in hotel rates. There are many ways to explore Germany, depending on your itinerary and budget. Find out how you can best travel around the country from renting a car and driving down the Autobahn (one of the densest and best maintained highway networks on earth), to enjoying a relaxing train ride. All modes of transportation are up to a high modern standard. By Train: One of the best ways to discover Germany (and Europe at large) is by train. Deutsche Bahn or `DB`, the German railway system, is very well developed and reliable, and if you book tickets in advance (180 days before departure at the earliest) it can be surprisingly affordable. You can reach almost every city in Germany by train; not to mention that watching the German landscape stream by your window is a very relaxing and comfortable way to travel. Regional trains are now run by a variety of private operators as well as Deutsche Bahn subsidiaries, but they can all be booked through bahn.com . Long distance trains on the other hand are almost all run by Deutsche Bahn. Those few that aren`t have to be booked through the operating company. By Car: Germany has a world-famous network of excellent roads and Autobahn (motorway) with no toll or fees for cars. Although public transport in Germany is excellent, those who choose to drive will find the road network fast and efficient as well. Like most of Europe, Germany drives on the right-hand side. Check in advance on whether your non-German driving licence is valid in Germany. Otherwise, you may risk a heavy fine or up to one year in jail. For longer stays most foreign licenses are not valid no matter what your residence status is. If you plan on driving on a longer stay (several months or years) try getting a European drivers license that is usually valid throughout the European Union. Germany offers many scenic drives that will lead you past picturesque villages, medieval castles, and unspoiled countryside. Europe has a diverse spectrum of all-inclusive options in locations ranging from the sunny beaches of Spain's Canary Islands to the snow-capped mountains of the Austrian Alps.

For budget travelers , cheap European all-inclusive resorts can be very cost-effective. There's no need to pay for anything else once you arrive at your destination, so you know exactly how much your vacation will cost when you book.

Luxury jet-setters looking to splurge are also in luck: There are high-end, all-inclusive resorts with gourmet degustation dinners, knowledgeable sommeliers, creative cocktail programs and 24-hour room service.

From adult-only options to family-friendly properties , here are the best all-inclusive hotels and resorts in Europe.

Dreams Jardin Tropical Resort & Spa on Tenerife, the largest of Spain's stunning Canary Islands, stands out as soon as it comes into view. Its mix of Mediterranean and North African design is eye-catching. The water features — including a swimming pool spread across several levels, with waterfalls cascading down toward the ocean — create a gorgeous setting for relaxation. Expect to spot a few jealous glances from the general public as they walk past the property.

Like other AMR Collection resorts, the culinary options are abundant at Dreams Jardin Tropical. Guests will find 10 food and beverage outlets serving everything from Spanish tapas to American steakhouse fare and contemporary Italian cuisine. There's even a mammoth breakfast buffet that rivals those in Las Vegas, offering hundreds of options to start your day.

Other amenities include two kids clubs, a spa with a sauna, a beach club and an open-air gym with sweeping ocean views. Travelers keen on exploring the island can also take advantage of the on-site bike facility, where rentals, storage lockers and more are available.

The accommodations are varied, too. Each of the 419 guest rooms and suites — which feature blue-and-white color schemes and natural elements like wood and bamboo — measures at least 300 square feet and overlooks the property's pools or the ocean. All are outfitted with flat-screen TVs, minibars and furnished balconies or terraces.

Overlooking Corfu's beautiful Ionian coast, the 411-room Ikos Dassia doesn't feel like your typical megaresort, thanks to its careful and respectful design. The property's low-rise buildings blend into the surrounding landscape, giving guests the sense that they're fully immersed in Corfu's stunning scenery. If they want to leave the resort to go sightseeing, the hotel's complimentary car service can help.

Rooms and suites feature minibars fully stocked with spirits that are replenished daily; they also have furnished balconies with land or sea views as well as flat-screen TVs with DVD players. Upgrade to a deluxe suite for even more amenities, including high-end Anne Semonin toiletries, a Nespresso machine and access to the exclusive Deluxe Collection Pool. The 220-room property is home to 13 different accommodation types. Options range from 365-square-foot standard doubles with air conditioning and balconies or terraces to 602-square-foot superior suites with sea views and private pools. This variety ensures that all travelers, especially families, will find a configuration that works for them. There's more to this Iberostar property than its plentiful sleeping quarters, though.

Seafood lovers can tuck into local Portuguese delicacies like soberio bacalao (salted cod) prepared fresh to order at live cooking stations. Meanwhile, wellness enthusiasts can break a sweat in the 24-hour fitness center or enjoy a treatment at the property's spa. There are four pools for travelers who'd prefer to spend their vacation lazing in the sun.

Best of all, visitors can rest easy knowing they're staying at an environmentally conscious property. This beachfront hotel no longer distributes single-use plastics, serves as much sustainably sourced seafood at its restaurant as possible and plans to be carbon neutral by 2030.

All-inclusive rates at the Iberostar Selection Lagos Algarve start at 208 euros ($219) per night, based on double occupancy.

The H10 Rubicon Palace on Lanzarote is certainly palatial, with almost 600 rooms and suites. All have air conditioning, minibars and flat-screen TVs tuned into international channels. As a bonus, the hotel is also dog-friendly.

During your stay, you're unlikely to get bored with the food and beverage offerings thanks to the hotel's 13 dining venues specializing in Italian, Asian and American cuisines. Room service is also available 24 hours a day, and there is a poolside food truck for meals on the go.

Despite lacking direct beach access, the H10 Rubicon Palace provides many ways to enjoy the Canary Islands' sublime weather year-round. Families can play miniature golf and splash in the three children's pools (including one with a pirate ship structure with a waterslide); little ones can enjoy the three kids clubs. Older guests can unwind at the five adults-only pools, pamper themselves at the spa, or try on-site activities like dance classes and water aerobics.

All-inclusive rates at the H10 Rubicon Palace start at 250 euros ($263) per night, based on double occupancy.

Whether you're indecisive or prefer having multiple options while on vacation, the Club Med La Palmyre Atlantique will appeal to travelers who want a bit of serendipity with their all-inclusive stay. Situated in Les Mathes, France — a coastal community less than two hours northwest of Bordeaux — this Club Med outpost offers a mix of everything you could want while visiting France: phenomenal food, coastal charm and proximity to top-notch vineyards.

The Atlantic restaurant offers local oysters and shellfish dishes as well as French delicacies like croissants and foie gras. A more casual seafood venue called La Belle Epoque is also available. You can even partake in wine-tasting workshops at La Belle Epoque's wine cellar.

To work off all the gourmet fare and extra pours of vino, sign up for the resort's beach boot camp or try sailing on nearby Bonne Anse Bay. If you'd rather stay on dry land, grab a bike and traverse 18 miles of mountain biking trails through the sprawling La Coubre forest. Or challenge another guest to a tennis match. A kids club and a children's pool are also available for those little vacationers.

When you're ready to retire for the night, expect a serene room with thoughtful amenities. All 392 rooms and suites are mostly white with colorful pops of blue and green — an homage to the surrounding seascape and countryside. In addition to standard features like air conditioning and TVs, they come with little luxuries like heated towel bars in the bathrooms and furnished terraces or balconies.

All-inclusive rates at the Club Med La Palmyre Atlantique start at 474 euros ($499) per night, based on double occupancy. Keep in mind that the resort has a seven-night minimum for all stays.

This beachfront property overlooking the Mediterranean Sea draws inspiration from its location in the Turkish resort city of Antalya. The 183 rooms, suites and villas are housed in buildings with traditional Seljuk architecture (think: towering stone structures with clean lines, grand archways and domed tops).

Accommodations are spacious, measuring at least 409 square feet. In-room amenities include minibars, desks and balconies with views of the hotel gardens, the sea or the two on-site 18-hole golf courses. This adults-only property on Lanzarote in the Canary Islands is ideal for travelers craving time away from kids. At Secrets Lanzarote Resort & Spa, all 335 guest rooms and suites have huge 65-inch smart TVs, minibars, balconies or terraces with garden, mountain or ocean views.

Before You Go

• To make it easier to replace your passport if it’s lost or stolen, in addition to your passport, take a photocopy of your passport information page (keeping it separate from your actual passport).

Visiting Europe On A Budget

Y ou’ve always wanted to see the grand sights of Europe, visiting famous cities like London , Paris , Venice and Rome , among others. You’ve longed to do the Grand European Tour , and you’ve found one of the perfect cheap all-inclusive vacations to take you to those dreamed-of faraway lands. While vacations of this type can have their drawbacks: a bit rushed, never enough time to dwell on a favorite landmark or town, they have fabulous advantages too. Affordable, a way to experience many countries and cities in one major trip, and finding friendships among fellow travelers are just a few good points of cheap all-inclusive vacations. You can find many variations of these packages and line up all the European cities you’ve wanted to visit. Oh, you might not get to one or two that you’ve always wanted to see, but you’ll certainly be able to visit all the rest.

All-inclusive tours

You can find a tour that visits London , Amsterdam, Lucerne, Venice, Rome, Florence, Cannes, Carcassonne, Barcelona, Madrid, Bilbao, Poitiers and Paris.

Imagine visiting all these fantastic cities on cheap all-inclusive vacations. Travel, accommodations, meals, and entrance fees to major attractions and landmarks are all covered in one payment. Usually, travelers ride on luxury motor coaches, relaxing in comfortable seats while they gaze at the lovely land and seascapes on their way.

Do your research online and find the package tour of your dreams. Two summers ago I happened upon a deal with Tour Radar to Turkey that included almost everything including flights within the country for only $800 a person! 

On your own

On the other hand, maybe you’d like to see the best sites in Europe on your own and without a guided, rushed tour. You might even prefer the lesser-known but still lovely sights of a less-traveled Europe. Say you would love to see Paris, Venice, and Barcelona, but you also wish to avoid the horde of harried visitors tromping through all of Europe during the peak season.

Think of heading to your dream holiday destinations during the off-peak season or during what’s called the “shoulder season” of April, May, early June, September, and early October. Other tourists will still be about during these months, but far less of them than during peak season.

Eden and I recently road-tripped part of the Romantic Road in Germany in late May. It’s so easy to drive around Germany and there were hardly any tourists!

Off the beaten path

Or, reflect on the lesser-known destinations in Europe, some of the eastern European countries or cities that are not on every tourist’s must-see list. Some of these towns and cities are significantly more lovely, with more splendid scenery than the more visited European destinations. Like Albania . 

Consider heading to Bled, Slovenia, known as one of the most beautiful towns in all of Europe, located on the edge of the towering Alps at Lake Bled. For a thousand years, pilgrims came to Bled to visit the church of St. Mary on the island in Lake Bled. A mighty castle tops a 100-meter cliff above the lake.

I use Skyscanner to find flights. I use it so much, I wrote an entire guide to finding cheap flights with Skyscanner ! My second favorite site to find flights is Momondo , another great site for finding cheap flights.

Book a Place to Stay

I recommend using Expedia.com or Hotels.com for most hotel bookings. I prefer to book directly with Marriott when I stay there because of their excellent military discount.

If you prefer staying in a vacation rental instead, I recommend VRBO .

Choose Activities and Tours

To find great activities in any area I use Get Your Guide and Viator . If we are visiting a city with lots of popular attractions I always check CityPass and GoCard to see if they have discount cards available.

When I want to book a full-on multi-day tour I use TourRadar . They’ve got fantastic weekly deals. If I am going somewhere in Mexico or the Caribbean I use Apple Vacations .

Rent a Car or Take a Lyft

More often than not Lyft is cheaper than Uber. Use my Lyft link for an $18 credit ! For a car rental in any country, I recommend Discover Cars .
