If you have dozens of tabs open in Safari on iPhone or iPad and need to clear them out quickly, it can be tedious to "X" them out one at a time. Luckily, there are two ways to close all your Safari tabs at once, and they also work in Private Browsing mode. Here's how.

First, open "Safari" on your iPhone or iPad. While on any page, locate the tab switcher button, which looks like two overlapping squares. On the iPad, you'll find it in the upper-right corner of the screen.

On the iPhone, it's in the lower-right corner of the screen.

Place your finger on the tab switcher button and hold it there for a moment, preforming a "long press." In the menu that pops up, select "Close All Tabs." (There will be a number in the choice that lists the number of open tabs.)

When Safari asks you to confirm with another pop-up, tap "Close All Tabs" again. After that, all of your browser tabs will close.

There's another way to quickly close all tabs in Safari on iPhone and iPad. First, open "Safari," then tap the tab switcher button once.

On the tab switcher screen, locate the "Done" button, which is located in the upper-right corner of the screen on the iPad and in the lower-right corner of the screen on the iPhone.

Long-press the "Done" button — place and hold your finger there for a moment until a pop-up appears. In the pop-up, select "Close All Tabs." The exact name of the pop-up action will vary, depending on the number of tabs you have open.

Safari will ask you to confirm closing all the tabs with another pop-up message. Select "Close All Tabs" again. Then all of your Safari tabs will close instantly. The same action works in Private Browsing mode. Pretty handy!

If you accidentally closed all of your tabs and would like to get them back, you can retrieve them one at a time as long as you aren't in Private Browsing mode . Just tap the tab switcher button, then long-press the "+" button until a "Recently Closed Tabs" list appears . From there you can tap on entries in the list to open them again in Safari. Good luck!

• Open the Safari app on your iPhone.
• Tap the icon with two squares in the lower right corner to view all your open tabs.
• Optional: If you have any tabs that you want to keep open, press and hold on that tab and select Move to Tab Group , as this process only does one tab group at a time.
• Long press on the thumbnail for an open tab . Pro tip: Use a tab you would like to keep open, as this will be the only tab remaining at the end of the process.
• Tap on Close Other Tabs.

• Select New Empty Tab Group or use the New Tab Group with # Tabs to create a group with the tabs already opened.

How to Close All of Your Safari Tabs at Once on iPhone or iPad

There are some iOS gestures and tricks that have been around forever, but remain relatively hidden because they're hard to find unless you know about them.

Closing all of the tabs in your Safari browser on an iOS device is one such trick -- it's simple if you know how to do it, but it's a gesture you might not know exists.

• Open up Safari.
• Long press on the "Tabs" icon denoted by two squares. On iPhones, it's at the bottom of the browser in portrait mode or at the top in landscape mode. On the iPad, it's at the top.
• Select Close All Tabs.

Alternatively, you can single tap on the Tabs icon to bring up the browser window view, and then long press on "Done" to bring up the same "Close All Tabs" interface.

That's all there is to it. Safari will let you know how many tabs are currently open, and it will close each and every one after the Close All Tabs option is tapped.

Moreover, if you have eighty open tabs, it would be cumbersome to close them one by one. Thankfully, there are multiple ways to manually and automatically close all Safari tabs on iPhone at once.

Note : All the methods here work on iOS 14 and the latest iOS 15 unless stated otherwise. The screenshots are from iOS 15. On iOS 14, things look slightly different.

How to close all open Safari tabs on iPhone

• Launch Safari on your iPhone and long-press the two-square icon from the bottom right. On iPad, this icon may be at the top-right.

How to Close All Open Tabs at Once in iPhone Safari?

It is common to work with multiple tabs in iPhone Safari browser. However, most of us close the open tabs one by one by tapping on the “Tabs” icon and selecting the close icon on the tabs. If you want to close all the tabs at once, here are some options for you.

iPhone Safari Tabs

Safari has multiple options to keep your tabs open.

• Private mode
• Normal mode

Tabs are also maintained for each profile . So, you need to follow the appropriate steps for each profile if you are using multiple profiles.

1. Close All Tabs in Normal Mode

This option will close tabs only opened in a normal mode and will NOT close tabs under Private section and Tab Groups.

• Open Safari browser app and long press on the Tabs icon showing on lower right corner.
• Select “Close All x Tabs” option.
• You will see a prompt and confirm it by tapping on “Close All x Tabs” option.

2. Close Tabs Along in Normal and Private Modes

Use this option to close all tabs in normal mode as well as in Private section. However, items in Tab Groups will not be closed.

• Open Safari and tap on the Bookmarks icon at the bottom.
• Go to “History” tab and tap on “Clear” link showing on bottom right corner.

• Select the “Clear Timeframe” as “Last hour” or any other option.
• Turn on “Close All Tabs” button under “Additional Options” heading.
• Tap on “Clear History” button to close all tabs and delete history for the selected time frame.

2.1. Close Tabs from Safari Settings

This is same as previous method with the difference that you can follow the steps from Settings instead of Safari app.

• Open Settings app and go to “Safari” section.

• Scroll down and tap on “Clear History and Website Data” option.

• Select the timeframe and turn on “Close All Tabs” button.
• Tap on “ Clear History ” button.

3. Close All Tabs in a Tab Group

• Open Safari and tap on the “Tabs” icon.
• Select the “Tab Group” to view all open tabs.
• Long press on the “Done” link showing on bottom right corner.
• Select “Close All Tabs” option.
• Follow the same steps for each Tab Group.

Final Words

If you are only using normal mode of browsing, then the first option is the ideal for closing all tabs without deleting browsing history. You need to use other options for closing tabs under Private mode and Tab Groups.

With the holiday shopping season upon us, it's time to start covering your tracks online lest you spoil a holiday surprise. If you are like me, then you shop or at least research potential gift ideas on your phone. And if you have kids like mine, then they are constantly borrowing your phone. To preserve the magic of the holidays, I suggest you keep a lid on your open tabs.

An open tab left in Safari, Chrome or the Google search app may reveal Santa's secrets if you aren't browsing privately. You can, of course, with enough swiping and tapping close all of your open tabs one by one. A faster way, however, is to close all at once -- if you know where to look.

Close all tabs in Safari

Safari hides the close-all-tabs option. To access it, tap the tabs button in the lower-right corner that opens up a carousel of all of your open tabs. Next, tap and hold the Done button until a menu slides up from the bottom edge with a buttons for open a new tab or Close X Tabs (with X being the number of tabs you currently have open).

Close all tabs in Chrome

Chrome makes is a little easier than Safari to close all tabs. First, tap the tabs button in the upper-right corner that lists the number of your open tabs. Next, tap the triple-dot button in the upper-right corner and tap Close All Tabs from the menu.

Close all tabs in Google search app

I really rack up the open tabs in the Google search app because it opens a new tab each time you tap to open a search result. To close all of the tabs, tap the tabs button to open the carousel of open tabs. (The tabs button sits in the in the upper-right corner of the the Google search home page, but it moves to the bottom-right corner when you are viewing a web page.) The Google search app hides the close-all-tabs option until you swipe to remove one of your open tabs from the carousel. After you swipe to delete a tab, a Clear All button appears in the upper-right corner.

There is one more step to cover your holiday-shopping tracks in the Google search app. When you tap in the search bar to enter a query, it lists your recent searches. Below these suggestions is an option to View search history . Tap that and then you can tap to Clear All of your search history, leaving no trace of your shopping stops.

Close all Safari tabs on Apple Vision Pro?

Just about every day, I close all my Safari tabs on iPad by touching and holding the “display windows” icon in the right upper corner, then selecting “Close all [total number] tabs.” I do something similar on iPhone and Mac.

Unfortunately, I can find no equivalent on my beloved Apple Vision Pro! I have searched both Google and the Apple community, and there seems to be no solution. I’ve tried the iPad gesture and many variants of same, using my Apple Bluetooth keyboard — in vain.

Am I missing something? Is there a shortcut for this? Must I wait for VisionOS 2.1?

The Fastest Ways to Save All Your Open Browser Tabs for Later

T ab hoarders have a strong attachment to all the open tabs in their browsers. For these folks—and if you're reading this, you're probably one of them—open tabs serve as a combination of a read-later service, bookmarks, and an RSS reader. At some point, you're definitely going to get around to all of them. Until then, you're happy to keep holding on to the tabs you opened two years ago.

This is fine, until tab overload beings to slow down your browser, deplete your laptop or phone's battery life, or lead to the worst-case scenario—a crash that will cost you all those all tabs.

To avoid these issues, consider periodically saving all of your open tabs. This way you can still keep them open if you want to, but you'll also have a link dump to fall back on in case things go south. 

How to save open tabs in Safari

Apple makes it really easy to save your Safari tabs on your iPhone and your Mac.

If you have an iPhone , you can open Safari and hit the tabs button in the bottom-right corner of the browser window. Now, press and hold the button showing the number of open tabs. You can press Copy Links and paste all these links in a new note, Google Docs, or email it to yourself.

On your Mac , open Safari and click the sidebar button in the top-left corner of the window. It's to the right of the green maximize icon. In the left pane, you'll see a button that shows the number of open tabs. Right-click this button and select Copy Links . You can now paste all links in one go into any text editing app, or email them to yourself.

Back up open tabs in Chrome

You have two ways to quickly save all of your open tabs in Google Chrome. The first is to bookmark all tabs. On Windows, you can use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl-Shift-D and on Mac, you can try Command-Shift-D. Either will save all open tabs as bookmarks in one fell swoop. 

The other way is to use a Chrome extension called OneTab . Install and run this extension and it'll reduce all open tabs to a list in a single tab. You can then go to More > Copy links to clipboard to save all links and paste them elsewhere. Alternatively, you can use the Share as web page option to create a page with all your copied links. This is great if you want to share your open tabs with others.

These methods will work in all Chromium-based desktop browsers such as Brave, Edge, and Opera.

In Chrome for Android, you can hit the switch tabs icon next to the address bar and press and hold any open tab. Now select the three-dots menu, choose Select tabs , select all of them, tap the three-dots menu again, and select Bookmark tabs to save them or Share tabs to send them to other apps or people.

Save open tabs in Firefox 

Firefox also lets you save all of your open tabs in a similar way. Press Control-Shift-D (Windows) or Command-Shift-D (Mac) to bookmark them all quickly. Alternatively, you can install OneTab for Firefox , run it, and use the copy links or share as webpage options as described above.

Quickly close every tab that is currently open.

The first option in the mobile version of Chrome is the ability to close every tab that's open. This is useful if you leave active tabs open when you exit Chrome. The tabs stay open until you manually close them. However, you can prevent them from piling up if you clear your tabs before leaving Chrome.

To close all of your Chrome tabs, check out these steps:

• Select the tab switcher icon , which shows the number of open tabs.
• Tap the three-dot Chrome menu in the upper right corner.
• Choose the Close all tabs option.
• Tap the Close all tabs button. All your Chrome tabs close.
• Select the Undo option in the lower-right corner to reopen your closed tabs.

Select specific tabs and close them all

If you'd rather not close all tabs, choosing which ones to close as a group is another option. This allows you to keep the important tabs open while removing the ones you can do without.

To close specific tabs at once, do the following:

• Select the tab switcher icon .
• Tap the three-dot Chrome menu in the upper-right corner.
• Choose the Select tabs option.
• Tap each tab you want to close.
• Tap the three-dot menu .
• Select the Close tabs option.
• The tabs you selected close after that.

How to close Chrome tabs on a desktop computer

Like the mobile version of Chrome, the desktop counterpart has more than one way to close Chrome tabs. The sections below show some of these methods.

Use a keyboard shortcut command

When you have a keyboard at your fingertips, using a shortcut is a fast option for closing Chrome tabs. For Windows or ChromeOS devices, press Ctrl + Shift + W to close all your Chrome tabs. This closes all active tabs and shuts down the Chrome browser. Press Command + Shift + W to do this on a Mac computer.

Right-click and close all other inactive tabs

If you want to avoid closing all tabs, there's a separate option to keep one tab open and close everything else. This feature saves the most important tab while eliminating other tabs with minimal effort.

To close all inactive tabs using the right-click option, do this:

• Move the cursor over the tab you want to keep open.
• Right-click that tab, then select the Close other tabs option.
• Every inactive tab closes, and your current one remains open.

Use the Close tabs to the right option to choose a specific tab and close all the tabs to the right of it.

There are multiple different ways to close your Chrome tabs

Whether using the desktop version of Chrome or the app on your mobile device, you have several methods to close your tabs.
