Tour de Romandie 2023 route

Six stages across the high alpine mountains of Switzerland and parts of France

Route map for 2023 Tour de Romandie

The Tour de Romandie returns for a 76th edition, April 25-30, 2023, with six days of racing across the high alpine mountains of Switzerland that serve as a proving ground for teams looking for climbing and time trialling to prepare for the Grand Tours.

Similar to last year, there are 702.5 kilometres of racing, but 25.5 of that comes across two time trials, an opening prologue in Le Bouveret on the southern shore of Lake Geneva and 18.75 on stage 3.

Last year Aleksandr Vlasov  (Bora-Hansgrohe) unseated Rohan Dennis (Jumbo-Visma) in an uphill time trial on the final day of racing to secure the title. This year the moves in the ITT may be negated by big mountains, as the 18.75km race against the clock comes mid-race at Châtel-Saint-Denis to the north-east of Lake Geneva.

Not only are the races against the clock enticing for conditioning prior to the Giro d'Italia as well as the Tour de France , but Romandie packs in 12,991 metres of elevation gain across the six days. After the second ITT a giant mountain contest looms from Sion to Thyon 2000 for the penultimate day that finishes at 2,000 metres. The decisive stage 5 is a hilly finale that leads to Geneva.

Prologue: Le Bouveret, Port Valais to Le Bouveret, Port Valais

The week begins with a long but flat prologue, 6.8km in the village of Le Bouveret, tucked on the southernmost end of Lake Geneva in Port-Valais.

The opening kilometres head south and then turn after 2.5km to follow the Rhône River as it empties into the lake. Like the river waters, the riders will rush to the finish on the banks of Lake Geneva and set early GC expectations in the city centre of Le Bouveret.

Stage 1: Crissier to Vallée de Joux

The second day of racing is a hilly day of 170.9km from Crissier to La Vallée de Joux (Le Sentier) that the sprinters may survive.

The first set of category 2 climbs hit just 7.5km apart in the first half of racing, the Fontanezier (4.5km at 7.8%) and the Mauborget (5.4km at 7.9%), the second reaching 1,190 metres. Another 50km later, with a long descent from Sainte-Croix leading to Vallorbe, the Col Mont d’Orzeires (3.8km at 6.9%) must be crested to clear the way for the finale.

It is a relatively flat 48km to thesouth shore of Lac de Joux, the largest body of water in the Jura mountains. Look for a bunch finish in Le Sentier.

Stage 2: Morteau to La Chaux-de-Fonds

Stage 2 begins in Morteau, France and covers 162.7km of rugged terrain to the Swiss finish in La Chaux-de-Fonds. The first 73km are on French soil and provide rolling terrain to warm the legs for a second half packed with five categorised climbs that provide the bulk of 3,172 metres of elevation gain on the day.

Once crossing the Franco-Swiss river in the tranquil setting of Biaufond, the Swiss roads turn skyward at Basset (7.6km at 7.6%). The first of two ascents of Le Communal (1.6km at 7.6%) come 14km later, with intermediate sprint points on the initial crest. From Col de la Vue des Alpes (5.4km at 4.6%), there is along descent  back to the mountains of Neuchâtel via La Tourne (4.6km at 7.1%), then the Communal hill a second time.

The final 10.7km lead directly to the finish at La Chaux-de-Fonds, which organisers have set as a stunning punctuation for their version of  ‘Champs-Elysées’.

Stage 3: Châtel-Saint-Denis to Châtel-Saint-Denis (ITT)

Unlike past years when the individual time trial stage stopped the time and GC outcome on the final day, the ITT is now a mid-race affair. The 18.75km race against the clock is set in Châtel-St-Denis, located between Lake Geneva and the Friborg mountains.

It is a demanding ride that begins with a few flat kilometres. Then, a challenging but not severe climb hits mid-way from Frasse to Les Paccots followed by a technical descent on the final 5.5km to finish.

Stage 4: Sion to Thyon 2000

There is a total of 4,345 metres of elevation gain for the queen stage on Saturday. Stage 4, 161.6km, combines a pair of third-category climbs with a pair of first-category climbs in the lead up to a mountaintop finish at Thyon 2000 ski area, located on the western slope of the Val d'Hérens in central Valais with a  final 20km all uphill.

Two towering castles of Valère and Tourbillon overlook the start in Sion, which only provides 4km of flat roads before the punchyl category 3 ascent of Chamoson (2km at 7.3%). The road flattens for the next 20km in the approach to Anzère, a long 14.5km ascent that averages 7% and should serve for attacks. Another 10km later is the climb of Lens (3.5km at 6.5%), and then a long descent and valley section with an intermediate sprint leading to the Suen climb, 13.6km with almost a 7% average gradient.

There is another chance for sprint points on the descent, then the signature climb of a little more than 20km to the top of Thyon 2000.

Stage 5: Vufflens-la-Ville to Geneva

The final day of racing begins in Vufflens-la-Ville in the south-west district of Gros-de Vaud. The valleys and hills set the stage for the sprinters by the end of the 170.8km

Stage 5. It’s a rolling day with 2,506 metres of climbing, but only two classified climbs, the toughest at Grand Fuey (5.8km at 7.4%) just beyond the mid-point of the race. Le Molard (3.7% at 6.3%) follows 25km later, with a few uncategorised hills that lead to the final intermediate sprint just beyond Trélex. From there it is a fast 32km to the finish in Geneva on the Quai du Mont-Blanc.

2023 Tour de Romandie Stage 1 Preview

Crissier > Vallée de Joux 170km

tour de romandie 2023 odds

Stage 1 is a day for the sprinters, it could be the only chance they get this week. The sprint teams will ensure an easy break goes up the road, no doubt featuring riders from the Swiss national team and Tudor. They’ll gradually bring it back together and set up a bunch sprint.

Cloudy, but it should stay dry.

The bunch stay on a straight road from 13km to go until 2.3km remaining. At this point they take a tight right-hand bend, and then it’s full gas to the finish. I’ve seen wider finishing straights, being in a good position for the turn will be very important.

Mark Cavendish  – yet again, he arrives at a big race without a recognised sprint train, Astana’s approach to this season makes no sense to me. If it was me, I would have him riding with the same three or four riders at every race, they need time for the sprint train to click, but this can’t happen as whoever is charge of the race schedules doesn’t seem to understand how to bed in a sprint train. With almost no help in the finale, I don’t see Cav getting close, but I hope to be proven wrong.

Fernando Gaviria  – some riders don’t need a sprint train; Gaviria falls into that category. He’s posted some decent results this year, normally he gets a good position with 5km to go and uses all his track sense to jump from train to train. This approach is fraught with danger, and requires a bit of luck, but he seems at ease with it.

Ethan Vernon  – at last, someone who arrives with a sprint train. He’ll have Pedersen as his final man, and with Cavagna, Devenyns and maybe Černy to help with position, he should be starting the sprint from an excellent position. He’s not had many chances to ride for himself this season, this is an opportunity he would like to take.

Elia Viviani  – he’s had a great career, but he seems to be on the slide, especially as he’s fully focussed on the next Olympics.

Alberto Dainese  – wasn’t meant to be doing this race but was drafted in at the last minute. He doesn’t have much of a sprint train but has the speed to surprise.

Niccolò Bonifazio  – took an excellent win in Giro di Sicilia, his first for Intermarché. He’s another without specialist help in the closing kilometres, but he’s good at looking after himself.

Milan Menten  – he’ll have Sweeny to help guide but could do with a little more help. Menten has enjoyed a good season, if he gets a good spot for the sprint, he has the speed to challenge for the win.

Giacomo Nizzolo  – 6 th  in the final stage of Tirreno, then 10 th  in Scheldeprijs shows that there’s still life in the legs. He prefers a tougher finish, but with Zabel as final man, he should be up there.

Magnus Cort – he’s been getting involved in bunch sprints more than he used to but still not on every occasion. The cat 3 climb doesn’t look long enough for EF to think about hitting it hard, and it’s a long way from home. Winning this sprint will be tricky for Cort, I think he’ll have one eye on Thursday.

Prediction Time

Sprint trains make a difference.

I’ll take a win for  Ethan Vernon , and he’ll move into the race lead too. I see it as a fight between him and whoever manages to get on his wheel.

tour de romandie 2023 odds

We felt that the previous winners didn't quite tell the story of last year. Here's the three stages of last year's tour, with similar stature (medium mountain, high mountain and then a medium mountain stage.). All the time gap was made on the high mountain stage and held until the end.

It will likely be the same this year after taking a look at both parcours. The time bonuses of 10,6 and 4 likely won't be enough to factor in. To be fair though last year they had to climb Thyon 2000 which is 17.6km @ 6.6% compared to Torgon this year at 10.6km @ 6.6%. They're basically losing 7km of space where they can gain time.

So let's say we cut the potential time gained by roughly 56% of what they were last year. Can time bonuses actually make a difference? Yes. If someone placed first on stage one and stage three and came second or third on stage two then they'd win. But there's no likely candidates to be able to hold onto that second or third on stage two while still winning stage one and three.

Projections

The startlist isn't fully up but we expect most of the big names to arrive. If Niewiadoma shows, the climb isn't as hard as last year and we expect she may be able to hang on, while also making dents in stage one and three. But the same can be said for Kopecky - especially after her epic climbing in the Tour de France Femme. And for what it's worth, we'd lean Kopecky any day of the week.

Vollering has been climbing much better than last year, and given the shorter climb may end up cleaning this. It will be an interesting race to say the least!

Weather at the finish city of Thyon at 2:50 PM, local time: 8C (46F), showers in the area, with the wind from the southwest at 6 km/hr (4 mph). Through 4:00 PM there is an 80% chance of rain, declining to 30% in the late afternoon.

The race: There were three non-starters: Tobias Foss (Jumbo-Visma), Robert Gesink (Jumbo-Visma) & Kobe Goossens (Intermarche-Circus-Wanty)

Here's the report from stage winner and new GC leader Adam Yates' UAE Team Emirates:

UAE Team Emirates strike again at the Tour de Romandie.

After the success in yesterday’s time trial from Juan Ayuso, today it has been Adam Yates’ turn to take victory in Suisse by ruling the queen stage, 161,6 km from Sion to the summit arrival of Thyon 2000. It is the 22nd victory for UAE Team Emirates in 2023.

The British rider also becomes the new leader of the race.

Stage four, run under bad weather conditions, was led by a ten men breakaway, whose effort was neutralized on the final climb, 20.9 km at 7.6%.

Juan Ayuso, leader of the general classification, dropped from the main group at 8 km to the arrival, but UAE Team Emirates could rely on Rafal Majka and Adam Yates: the English cyclist attacked at 4.6 km to go and no one could prevent him taking the double stage victory plus leader jersey.

Second place went to Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) at 7” and third position for Damiano Caruso (Bahrain-Victorious) at 19”; Majka was 11th at 54”.

In the overall classification, Yates has an advantage of 19” on Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar), Majka is 8th at 1’47”.

The final stage will take the group from Vufflens la Ville to Geneve over 170,8 km with a 2nd category climb and a 3rd category climb at 50 km to the arrival.

Yates :   “I am very happy. It was a really good performance from the team. From the beginning, we knew Ayuso would have tried to fight to keep the jersey as long as possible and we helped him. Then Juan gave me the green light to go for the win, so I tried and I pushed hard until the finish line.

"It has been important for me to win, especially after the bad luck in the last couple of races: I had a big crash in Catalunya, I took time to recover and now I am here celebrating this success”.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner and new GC leader Juan Ayuso's UAE Team Emirates.

Juan Ayuso returned to racing and did it in the best way possible, winning the third stage of the Tour de Romandie and his first World Tour stage with a perfect time trial performance.

The stage saw riders individually race against the clock along 18.7km with the start and finish in Châtel-Saint-Denis.

UAE Team Emirates was a major protagonist on the stage with several riders occupying the top positions both in the first intermediate and in the final top 10. Mikkel Bjerg finished today’s race in seventh position and Adam Yates in third.

Following the advice of his teammates who had faced the time trial before him, Juan Ayuso passed the first intermediate with the third-best time, unleashing his power in the second part of the race until the finish line where he stopped the clock at 25’15”.

Ayuso: “I am in disbelief but obviously happy. It is my first victory in a World Tour race and in a time trial, and when I realized I had won, it was fantastic. I was only able to train for three weeks and half, so tomorrow will be a decisive test to see my condition. In case I can’t give my best, we still have Adam who did a great job and is in a good position in the General Classification, and we can count on him. Surely I will give my best tomorrow to continue wearing this yellow jersey.”

Thanks to the seconds gained, the Spaniard now leads the General Classification with an 18" advantage over Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar Team) and 19" over Tobias Foss (Jumbo-Visma), awaiting the penultimate stage scheduled for tomorrow, the only one suited for climbers, which will take riders up to 2090 meters in Thyon 2000 after 161.6 km starting from Sion.

The race: There were two non-starters: Sean Quinn (EF Education-EasyPost) & James Knox (Soudal Quick-Step).

Here's the report from stage winner & new GC leader Ethan Hayter's Team INEOS Grenadiers:

Ethan Hayter powered to a comprehensive sprint victory on stage two to move into the overall race lead at Tour de Romandie.

Hayter rounded off an excellent team performance after a lead out from Egan Bernal and Jhonatan Narvaez on a tricky finish in La Chaux-de-Fonds.

The British national time trial champion had weathered a number of attacks on the categorised climbs approaching the finish, with only half the peloton making it to the final climb - Le Communal.

The Grenadiers came together after the final ascent, working together well to navigate a technical finale with a lot of road furniture in the last kilometres.

After coming through the final roundabout, Bernal and Narvaez timed their leadout to perfection, dropping Hayter at the front of the bunch. The London rider calmy waited for his rivals to make the first move before putting an impressive acceleration in to win the stage and move into the race lead.

Ethan Hayter: "I was climbing quite well yesterday and maybe if there had been another climb nearer the finish I would have done better yesterday, but I was quietly confident today.

"The sprint wasn’t so close, but to get there was the hard part. It was a pretty hard stage, Jumbo made a pretty hard pace on all the final climbs and there were a fair few attacks at the end. I survived and we got to the front at the perfect time.

"We had to go a little bit early, but I think it was best with all the roundabout to stay out of trouble. Then I was waiting for the guys to come behind, because Jhonatan Narvaez came a long, long way to join the front. I saw someone was coming and then opened up the sprint.

Weather at the finish city of Le Sentier at 2:15 PM, local time: 9C (50F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the southwest at 11 km/hr (6 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Testing positive for Covid-19, Alexey Lutsenko (Astana Qazaqstan), did not start.

Here's the report from stage winner and new GC leader Ethan Vernon's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Ethan Vernon scored a crushing sprint victory on stage 1 of the Swiss race, after a great lead-out of Casper Pedersen, who placed him in a perfect position with 300 meters to go. A winner of three races in the first couple of weeks of the season, Ethan remained calm in a hectic finale, before launching down the middle of the road and stomping his sprinting authority in Vallée de Joux.

“It’s the second World Tour success of my career after the one in the Volta a Catalunya last year, and just like back then, it feels great to win at this level”, said one of the youngest riders to take a Tour de Romandie stage victory this century.

The day contained three classified climbs, but a flawless teamwork of his Soudal Quick-Step teammates helped the Brit make it over the stage’s difficulties, where many of the other sprinters got dropped. Dries Devenyns did a fabulous job, keeping things together for most of the stage, before Rémi Cavagna and even overall leader Josef Cerny took over in the closing kilometres, making sure Vernon remained well-positioned under the flamme rouge.

Following this victory and the bonus seconds it brought, the 22-year-old went straight to the top of the general classification, ahead of Josef, and will sport the yellow jersey on the hilly stage to La Chaux-de-Fonds.

“It was difficult on the climbs, as some teams upped the tempo and pushed hard, but I survived thanks to the boys. I am grateful to them, not just for their help there, but also for the mammoth work they put in the entire day. I already had three victories this season before today, but the last of these came two months ago, so it feels good to win again. Leading this race is a bonus, and I will enjoy wearing yellow on Thursday”, added Ethan after Soudal Quick-Step’s 21st victory of the year.

Bicycle History

Weather at the race city of Le Bouveret at 1:50 PM, local time: 9C (48F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the north at 8 km/hr (5 mph). During the afternoon there is a 24% chance of rain.

The race: First rider scheduled to roll off is Jonathan Bogli (Swiss Cycling) at 2:50 PM.

Here's the report from stage winner Josef Cerny's Team Soudal Quick-Step:

Josef Cerny became the tenth different Soudal Quick-Step rider to put his name on the winners’ list of this season, after an impressive display of strength on the 6.8km flat course around Le Bouveret. The 30-year-old came at the start of the longest Tour de Romandie prologue in a decade with the hope of racking up a top 10 finish, but he exceeded any expectations beating a host of specialists to net Soudal Quick-Step’s 20th victory of the year.

Multiple national champion of the discipline, Cerny averaged a whooping 55.17km/h despite the wet roads, setting a time of 7:25, which put him in the hot seat, where he remained for the slimmest of margins, only three tenths of a seconds separating him from runner-up Tobias Foss (Jumbo-Visma). Another Soudal Quick-Step rider, Rémi Cavagna, also came very close, concluding just a second behind his teammate. Our team had three men in the top 10 at the end of the day, after Ethan Vernon – making his first appearance in a month – produced a solid effort to take the best young rider jersey.

Cerny, now the first Czech rider in 14 years to win a stage and wear the Tour de Romandie yellow jersey, was over the moon with his victory: “It was a fast course, but I gave everything and did a good prologue. It was very close, but in the end I was the lucky one. I worked hard in the time trial, had good legs and a very good bike, and now I’m happy with this win. I wasn’t the favourite. I was hoping for a top 10 or a top 5, so to get the victory is just fantastic. It was a fast course, I did a good prologue, I was very close, but in the end I was the lucky one and I’m happy with this victory.”

“I worked hard in the time trial, had good legs today and a very good bike. I knew I wasn’t the favourite, I was more hoping for a top 10 or top 5, so to win is fantastic. It gives me a lot of joy to have the yellow jersey in such a prestigious race”, said Josef, who also leads the points and KOM classification.

Tour de Romandie 2023 Route stage 2: Morteau - La Chaux-de-Fonds

The finale looks promising for the puncheurs. Three editions ago Primoz Roglic powered to victory on the same finish in La Chaux-de-Fonds. The Slovene outgunned David Gaudu and Rui Costa.

At an elevation of 992 meters, La Chaux-de-Fonds is the second highest located town of Switzerland. Small wonder the route is far from flat.

With almost 50 kilometres remaining the riders reach the summit of the Col de la Vue des Alpes after 5.1 kilometres of climbing at 4.8%. The route then descends into the valley to continue for some 10 kilometers on the flat before the Col de Tourne begins. The 4.2 kilometres climb at 7.2% peaks out with 25 kilometres to go.

The finale includes a 1.5 kilometres climb at 8.1%. Right after the descent the riders tackle a 1 kilometre climb at 6% to enter the last 5.5 kilometres on the flat.

The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds.

2024 Cognizant Classic odds, picks, predictions, field: Proven golf expert fading Rory McIlroy at PGA National

Sia nejad reveals his cognizant classic 2024 picks, props and sleepers as the pga tour begins its florida swing.

rorymcilorycbs.jpg

Veteran Ryan Palmer will make his 500th career start on the PGA Tour when he tees off it the 2024 Cognizant Classic beginning on Thursday at PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. The 47-year-old Palmer has four wins, 11 runner-up finishes and more than $33.5 million in earnings since his rookie season. He has made only one cut in three starts this season, but that came last week at the Mexico Open at Vidanta.

This week, Palmer is a +20000 longshot to win the 2024 Cognizant Classic. World No. 2 Rory McIlroy is the overwhelming favorite in the 2024 Cognizant Classic odds at +700. Cameron Young (+2200), Russell Henley (+2500), Eric Cole (+2500), Matt Fitzpatrick (+2800), Tom Kim (+2800) and Byeong Hun An (+2800) round out the top seven choices in the Cognizant Classic 2024 field. Before locking in any 2024 Cognizant Classic picks, make sure you  see the PGA Tour predictions and best bets from golf betting and fantasy expert Sia Nejad .

Nejad specializes in betting and DFS in golf, among other sports. He's had incredible success in the outright and first-round leader markets and in betting head-to-head matchups. He also has been on fire with his head-to-head matchups since last year's Charles Schwab Challenge, going 32-18-1 and returning 10.70 units over that span. That's a $1,070 profit for $100 bettors since May 2023.

Nejad also nailed 75-1 longshot Wyndham Clark as the outright winner at the Wells Fargo Championship. In 2023, SportsLine debuted "The Early Wedge," and in the first three months of the show, he hit two first-round leaders and three outright winners.

Now, Nejad has focused his attention on the 2024 Cognizant Classic field and has locked in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. See who they are at SportsLine .

Top 2024 Cognizant Classic expert picks

One surprise: Nejad is completely fading the clear favorite in Rory McIlroy. Listed at +700, McIlroy enters the week ranked No. 2 in the world. He will be making his 10th start at PGA National but first since 2018.

Nejad doesn't like how McIlroy has played so far this season on the PGA Tour. He finished 66th in the rain-shortened AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am before coming in 24th at The Genesis Invitational. In the latter, he lost 3.809 strokes to the field around the green. "He is too short a number to back given his recent play," Nejad told SportsLine.

However, Nejad is high on the chances of Keith Mitchell, who's going off as a +3500 longshot. Ranked No. 50 in the FedEx Cup standings, Mitchell is coming off a tremendous ball-striking year. Last season, he ranked second in total driving (62), seventh in strokes gained: off the tee (0.743) and 14th in driving distance (313.7).

Mitchell also secured a top-20 finish at the Mexico Open last week. In that tournament, he gained 8.079 strokes approaching the green, which ranked second in the field. "He won this tournament in 2019, was ninth in 2022 and has a game that is really coming around, particularly in the ball-striking department," Nejad said.  See whom else to back at SportsLine .

How to make 2024 Cognizant Classic picks

Nejad has locked in his best bets for the 2024 Cognizant Classic and is backing several longshots, including one that is priced at more than 50-1. This player "is gaining strokes across all metrics in a big way" and is a longshot who could surprise. You can see Nejad's PGA Tour picks only at SportsLine .

So which players should you target or avoid for the 2024 Cognizant Classic, and which player in the   Cognizant Classic 2024 field could bring a huge payday at more than 50-1? Check out the odds below, then visit SportsLine to see Sia Nejad's top picks for the 2024 Cognizant Classic , all from the expert who is 32-18-1 on his last 51 head-to-head picks.

2024 cognizant classic friday tee times, how to watch pga tour, share this article.

Jake Knapp, fresh off his maiden PGA Tour win in Mexico a five days ago, has primo tee times for the first two rounds of the Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches.

His playing partners for the first two days? World No. 1 and 2012 Cognizant Classic winner Rory McIlroy and defending Cognizant Classic champion Chris Kirk.

Knapp opened with a 3-under 68 to start his week at PGA National. That puts him tied for 30th but he’s also only four shots off the lead held by Chad Ramey and S.H. Kim.

Meanwhile, prior to starting play this week, McIlroy acknowledged that he’s on the back nine in his career.

“Yeah, I would say I’m pretty close to the turn at this point, if not a little bit after. Maybe on the 10th green or 11th tee.”

McIlroy then went out and did Knapp one better, posting a 4-under 67. McIlroy is gunning to break Mark Calcavecchia’s record of most time between wins in the event. Calc went 11 years (1987 and 1998) between his two wins there.

PGA National’s The Champion course is a par-71 layout measuring 7,147 yards. The Champion ranks No. 7 in Florida on  Golfweek’s Best list of public-access courses  in each state, and it ties for No. 69 on the list of top resort courses in the U.S.

The purse at the Cognizant Classic is $9 million with $1.62 million going to the winner. The winner will also receive 500 FedEx Cup points.
