If you're going to ferry, it's a good option

I was nervous because of the reviews but my experience was really pretty good. Things could've been better but was it worth it? Yes. I took the ferry from Cebu to Manila due to an injury where I was unable to fly. The route is 24 hours so I went with a state room so I could sleep lying down comfortably. Purchasing my ticket was painless and after boarding, I was shown my state room which was spacious and comfortable with an en-suite bathroom. If you've got luggage, tip a porter to carry your stuff--just look for the people with numbered shirts and they should weigh your bags and then give you a ticket. I gave them about 250PHP, or 5USD each way--departing, when I got my bags onboard and arriving, after we got off the boat. In Manila, to take my bags down, they wanted to know how much I'd pay them before accepting. The steps to get up and down the ferry are a chore and if you've got more than one bag or anything that's weighty, you'll find it worth it. With a state room, they'll bring it right to your room and pick the bags up from your room. The seas can be a little rough so if you're even slightly prone to motion sickness, have some options with you. The terminal at the Cebu port is crazy! Just be prepared for people running around everywhere, trying to grab your attention for something or other. It also takes ages to depart. My ferry number didn't show up on the departures list so I had to ask and make sure I was in the right place. Despite the departure time, we didn't even start boarding the shuttles until almost an hour later. There's lots of security protocol before leaving the terminal. I didn't count how many shuttles buses it took to board everyone but it took about an hour. Since I had a state room, I wasn't in a rush and just waited until the end. As mentioned, the stairs to board the bus are steep. I don't know what options they have for those who need more assistance. I was nervous about my luggage but once onboard, the porter saw me and showed me my bag. I picked up my key for the room and left my ID as collateral and the porter carried my bag to my room. The room had two twin beds, two closets, a small dining table, large windows, and an en-suite bathroom complete with shower, sink, and toilet. There was also a TV but I couldn't get to work. The Wi-fi was only good for an hour, I think so fairly worthless for a 24-hour journey. The bathroom wasn't the best--the shower didn't spray well and there was some mold--but it was otherwise clean. Food wasn't great and they didn't have a lot in-room dining options but it was very easy to order and they delivered right to your room. Meals were included in my fare. It was quiet and I was able to sleep easily. I didn't even think I had any neighbors in the other state rooms. Departing was pretty easy once we docked in Cebu. It seemed to take forever but not surprising given now long it took to board. The porter didn't come to get my stuff until after nearly everyone else had disembarked. The cleaning staff actually asked if they could come and clean before I even left. The porter took my stuff down the stairs and gave them to another porter to take me out to the ground transportation area. I gave him 200PHP or about 4USD. My resort had sent a driver to meet me and I was able to find him easily. As a solo traveller, I was sure how it would all be so I definitely opted for more "luxury" options to feel more comfortable. While a ferry ride might be an interesting way to sail on the waters and get from Cebu to Manila, it wouldn't be my first choice. The price for a state room was just slightly less than the cost of a flight and the additional 23-hour is more time than I would want to spend on the commute; but being restricted from air travel, this was a good option.

Reschedule, reschedule, reschedule almost 90% of the time. They offer refund but not 100% this is one way of milking their client from surcharge because of 2GO fault. They are greedy, inefficient and inhumane treatment of passenger

We travelled Bohol to Cebu via 2go Travel. 2GO Travel ferry provides an average travel experience, earning a rating of 3 out of 5 stars. The ferry journey offered a decent mode of transportation, but it didn't particularly stand out. While the facilities were satisfactory, the overall comfort level fell short of expectations.

I travelled from Manila to Cebu. The ship was full and the A/C was off for a long time. It was ageing, shabby, and not clean. The food was terrible or over priced, and we were refused access to the cabin class lounge we paid for. There was no running water in the washrooms morning and evening. And there were a lot of additional charges during the trip. First of all when trying to book online I found the classes confusing with no pictures of Business Class on their web site. Only the prices of available classes are shown, so when not able to see pictures of all classes for a particular sailing the price might not help understand which class is best because prices very widely from one vessel to another or perhaps depending on availability. Before booking I called their customer service to find out about the best room we could book and this was not cleared up. I specifically stated the need for an en suite washroom. I was told that business class was the right choice. The disappointments began at check in. I was required to wait for over half an hour because I didn't bring a paper print out of my tickets. I booked online and I don't travel with a printer. I have never found it necessary with airlines to have a paper print out. The booking reference number is usually sufficient and in any case I had the tickets ready to display in full on my mobile. Finally the staff relented on trying to send me out to find a printer and I was asked to provide the URL from the email which pointed to the tickets online. We had primarily chosen to travel by ferry because we had a lot of excess baggage for a local flight and we calculated the ferry would work out considerably cheaper. What we could not calculate was all the extra charges for porters, terminal fees, and even an obligatory medical consultation and forced purchase of overpriced medication that was not needed because my wife was only 2 months pregnant! Why she told them I'll never understand! Any luggage beyond carry-on must be handled by a porter for an extra fee at both ends of your journey because luggage carts or trolleys are not available for travelers to use themselves. On the way to the terminal we were warned by the taxi driver not to allow more than 1 porter to handle our luggage. Apparently things infamously go missing if you do. If you have a lot of luggage, you will have to really insist on only 1 porter. Once on board after learning that there was no en suite washroom for business class, when I specifically asked for the business class washrooms after showing my ticket I was instead shown to the regular super saver washrooms and even when I commented on this I was still not directed to the business class washrooms. We upgraded to cabin class to get a room with an en suite washroom as per my original request when booking. However, we found there was no running water in the evening or the morning when we wanted to have a bath or a shower. We were refused service in the lounge for cabin class and told to leave because we had purchased the upgrade on board even though I had of course paid full price. The lounge was not even busy. The food for business class on down is always a dab of some form of mystery meat, sweet sauce, cup of rice, and cup of soda, no water unless you pay. There was always a line up stretching around the halls of the ship for that. Otherwise you pay maybe 200 PHP for a small meal of semi passable food, not including water. There is no tissue in any of the washrooms and all water for showers was off morning and evening. The windows looked like they had not been cleaned on the outside for a long time. For the last couple hours the A/C was off on the whole ship. When we arrived in Cebu we were quoted 1500 PHP by a porter and I could not be sure this really included getting our luggage from pier 4 to pier 1, maybe only just off the ship. There is a free shuttle but it will accept very little luggage. I carried all our luggage off the ship myself in 5 trips which took about 25 minutes. It mostly took that long because of only one narrow gang plank for everyone going both ways, porters included. So narrow it was clearly safety hazard let alone very uncomfortable trying to negotiate who is going to give way. One or the other must plaster themselves against the rail while the other passes. Then the port had no place for private taxis to stop at all. We had to walk about 4 blocks to catch a taxi on a busy street. Paid 200 PHP for the porters cart and 300 PHP for the taxi. In the end even with our 45 kg of luggage each, and last minute booking we should have flown. It would have only cost about 15% more to save about 24 hours and get a much more pleasant experience with Philippine Airlines. The only plus was my 5 year old daughter's excitement about being on the ship, especially going out on the deck to catch the sea breezes and look at the sea. One can only wonder under what circumstances it would really be better to take this ferry.

16 to almost 24 hrs travel from coron to manila. Food is terrible if you are staying in tourist beds, all item are very costly its like 400X , no free water, charging station is 5p per 10mins. I would not recommend.

LONG DISTANCE TRAVEL IN PHILIPPINES BY SEA We had to go from Manila to Coron for wreck diving and we had a ton of gear and lots of time so decided to go by sea. So booking was a bit complicated as online was confusing for someone who had not taken this ferry in decades. In the end did it by phone and got what we needed. Getting a private cabin for two people seemed complicated but we got it. Itinerary was never too clear as to the routing not even the stops. The route was ridiculously long (52 hours for what should be 10-26 hours) this I would find out later was dictated by cargo. This is a Roll on Roll off transport truck ferry passengers mean nothing freight dictates all operational decisions. But we were in no rush. So vast a majority of poor peeps are on metal bunks in open sided decks (no A/C). Next class is wooden bunks (with A/C). Finally various cabins. Cabins are old but adequate, this is not a cruise ship. Food is whatever the peeps bring on then two levels of service. The bunk people sort of get rice and something. Those of us who paid for a cabin we ate in separate dining area. Basic but it was edible, at least for us who can ruff it. Fancy palates would be offended. Ship is old but fairly maintained, pretty clean and the young accommodation/F&B staff are all pretty helpful. If you have the time and want to taste the Phils go for it nothing wrong with it. BTW our planned 52 hours became 58 when there was a delay to load more trucks, hey no worries.

It can be found on Facebook - their site. I’m sure that if you google Star Awards, Sandals Ochi Rios, December 2018 it will show up. Other than this, I’m not really wanting to get involved but with 25 plus years of Sandals holidays behind me ,I have contacts in this business who will vouch for their credibility. Ultimately , we use them and have done on multiple occasions. We have also recommended them to friends and family. If you want that extra protection, then use a credit card which gives you Section 75 financial protection. For a purchase that size, I always do this anyway plus it gives you air miles.

Got2go travel are real, they have a shop in Standish where I live. My parents have booked their holidays with them every year for probably the last 5 or 6 years as they specialise in Sandals resorts. They have always got good deals.

I was a bit wary as saw it on FB and before we had to pay the balance I wanted to check the ATOL number. I couldn’t find it and when I phoned them they said it was done through another name - phoned them and they confirmed that Got 2 go Travel was covered. Think it was something like Mid Counties Travel - can’t really remember.

Excellent company done many a booking and will be doing many more couldn’t be happier with this family run busy. Yes they do great deals remember it’s the profit that makes holidays expensive.

Ultimate 2.0 Memory Pillow/Neck Support From Go Travel Review

This item was gifted to the reviewer for the purposes of writing the review. all thoughts and opinions are the reviewer's own..

Reviewed by Colin Hewitt

Not too many of us have managed to travel very far over the last couple of years. But, hopefully, there’s a little light at the end of the tunnel. Fingers crossed, very shortly, we’ll soon be boarding planes, trains, and coaches once again, without giving it too much thought.

During long haul flights, when I’ve fallen asleep due to snoozing at an awkward angle, I’ve suffered from a few stiff neck problems when I’ve awoken. In addition, I’ve recently managed to wake up with painful neck cramps after a good night’s sleep at home (the perils of ageing). Therefore, being asked to test a premium neck support pillow was much appreciated.

got 2 go travel reviews

In the past, I’ve tried a few neck support cushions. Inflatable ones, foam ones, I’ve even constructed my own with a wrapped up hand towel. However, the Go Travel Ultimate 2.0 neck support is in a league of its own.

It’s designed to help you sleep in an upright position. It has a substantial solid frame structure. When I removed it from the packaging, I wasn’t convinced it would be an enjoyable experience to wear. However, within the gun-metal grey velvet-like covering, the memory foam makes it extremely comfortable. When wrapped around your neck, it’s like being given a firm but gentle hug. It has a tension strap that can be fixed under your chin if you require even further support. This pulls the item quite tightly all-around your neck, giving you support at the front as well as the back, an ideal technique to avoid those jolts when your head falls forward when dropping off to sleep.

According to Go Travel’s excellent website, the pillow’s rear grip/carrying handle “helps secure the pillow to any headrest”. Unfortunately, I couldn’t quite see how that worked. However, if the user requires that level of support, I’m sure Go travel could provide some further information.

The website is also worth browsing to see many other travel product ideas.

I haven’t been able to test this pillow on a flight yet, but I have used it while sitting upright on the sofa watching a dull film on television. I can happily report that much to the annoyance of my partner, I managed to sleep without any problems whatsoever. We have a couple of long coach trips planned for next year. So I can already appreciate that this pillow will be a handy addition to our luggage.

The item weighs a lightweight 446g, which is quite essential if you’re going to use this on an aircraft. A very useful matching drawstring carry-pouch is provided. Unlike some inferior products, the cover can be removed, allowing the pillow to be hand-washed at 30 degrees C.

This product would make an ideal Christmas gift, not only for those relatives and friends who travel regularly but for anyone who occasionally needs some neck support at home.

There are many cheaper neck pillows available. Go Travel even sells some of them on their website; however, I doubt any would perform like the Ultimate 2.0.

Rating: 5 out of 5

RRP: £29.99

Marvelous 🇲🇦 Morocco

We had an absolutely fabulous experience! We were on the Morocco imperial tour. Our Tour Guide, Omar El Ghaly, was the absolute best guy we’ve ever ever had. He is so knowledgeable about the culture in history. He was so kind and cared so much about each of us. He’s even helping me find some pottery pieces after I return home from my trip. I would honestly take this exact trip again.

Our Magical Morocco trip was a Once in a Lifetime Adventure

Our Magical Morocco trip was incredible! Omar was a wonderful guide, who shared so much historical, cultural and geographical information. His friendliness, sense of humour, kindness and organization made this a once in a lifetime adventure. Our driver Daoud was also wonderful and by the time we finished our private tour, they both felt like family to us. The tour itself encompassed everything we could hope to cover in Morocco. The mosques, kasbahs, souks, national parks, Sahara desert (camel trek and overnight was a bucket list item, and still fills my heart). Through it all, Omar kept everything running smoothly. There is so much to explore in Morocco! The accommodations were comfortable and we felt at home in each one. We loved staying in the riads. Thank you Omar and Daoud, for showing us your beautiful country!

The whole tour was fantastically though out. We stayed in a selection of different accommodations which gave a true Moroccan experience. What an amazing diverse country, we saw and learnt so much. Our guide Jamal was very supportive and funny and the driver really good. I really recommended this tour!

Omar our tour guide in Morocco has been fantastic. He is always keen to help out and offer advice of the best places to go in each city. He suggests a range of options to eat or tour and is very helpful with translating and communicating with the locals. We are halfway through our tour of Morocco and very much enjoying the trip. The highlight so far I think is Chefchaouen. The Blue City is beautiful.

5 day Northern Lights tour in Iceland

My husband and I traveled to Iceland in the beginning of March and were on the 5 day Northern Lights tour with On the Go Travel. We were extremely pleased with our tour guide who was very efficient and knowledgable as we traveled by luxury coach bus along the southwest boarder of Iceland and inland on the Golden Circle. We toured the city of Reykjavik, saw many spectacular waterfalls, hiked on a glacier, met the famous Icelandic horses, and toured a tomato greenhouse. Hotel rooms were clean and the continental breakfast offered was very good and plentiful. This was a wonderful trip that I would highly recommend. We even witnessed the Northern Lights on our last night in Iceland. We could not have asked for a better experience.

Our 5 day Northern Lights Tour was…

Our 5 day Northern Lights Tour was amazing - well organized, saw many sights in a short amount of time - and our tour guide, Thora, was fantastic. She was animated, energetic, well-educated in local lore and the flora and fauna of the area, also gave good advice and recommendations throughout our tour. The hotels on the tour were comfortable and clean and the breakfasts they provided at them were delicious and abundant in choices! We saw all the major sights in the SW part of Iceland and also managed to see the Northern Lights on our last night (and locals said it was the best they had seen all season) We would definitely use On The Go again!

We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay!

Polar Nights Tromso Norway

This trip is advertised as 5 days which is false and misleading. It is only 3 days. Day 1 - meet tour guide in lobby at 6pm. That's it. Next day Sami and reindeer experience and drive by bus to Sommaroy. We could have had the camp-fire on this night had a sleepover , walk around island and gone back to Tromso. This could have been condensed into one day. There is so much time wasted sitting in your room doing nothing. We spent 2 nights and approx 42 hours on Sommaroy Island and during this time there was only one tour. We were taken by van to the (camp-fire tour) at approx 9pm in hopes to see the Northern lights. When we arrive there is no camp-fire but one gets made later (a tiny tin drum). I had pictured a lovely camp-fire with seats all around where we sat and chatted had hot drinks and toasted marshmallows while we waited in hope of seeing the lights. We left at approx 11.30pm. We were all very happy to get to see some lights so this was the highlight. So all in all we went there for 42 hours to spend 3 1/2 hours on a tour. We did a walk on the island for an hour with our guide, but anyone coming to the island could do that. This was at best a day trip. We come back to Tromso and the only thing organised is a bit of a boring walk around Tromso which we have already seen because of so much FREE time and a visit to the Polar Museum, all done by just after lunch time. Nothing to do now until 6.30pm when we get on the boat to chase the lights again. Sadly it was snowing so no chance tonight. Not the tour fault though. Didn't see tour guide on supposedly day 5 of our tour (which was just breakfast) on our own. I should have done my homework. Thoroughly overpriced. I could have done this whole thing easily by myself for way less than half the price.

Date of experience : March 21, 2024

Thank you for posting your feedback. We are confused that you found our information to be misleading as all marketing and documentation clearly outlines each day's activities, and identifies immediately that the start and end days do not include excursions. Scheduling our tours this way allows for multiple international participants to arrive or depart at their leisure on these days, and many travellers take the opportunity to explore on their own. Of course, we are pleased that your group experienced the Northern Lights and are disappointed that your own experience did not meet your expectations.

The 13 day Best of Morocco tour covered…

The 13 day Best of Morocco tour covered a fair bit of the country and our great tour guide, Jamal, was with us throughout. Jamal and his trusty driver Mustafa ensured we travelled safely and comfortably. Jamal reflected the friendly personality of all local Moroccans and he kept us informed and thoroughly entertained. Jamal and all local guides provided local knowledge without being preachy and out to impress. They knew their stuff and answered our questions with ease. Nice people. Great time and we got to see the Stars in the Sahara skies.

Golden Triangle and Kerala - ideal first visit tour

Excellent knowledgeable and organised guides (Sat and Vijesh), a comprehensive itinerary, heritage and 4 star hotels (and a houseboat stay!) made this tour really first class. I would strongly suggest bringing earplugs as the Golden Triangle cities noisy! Hotels offer buffets so you don't have to have curries for breakfast!

Totally Morocco - expectations exceeded

I have to start with our tour guide Jamal. He went above and beyond each day to ensure that our experience was nothing but perfection. He was a complete professional and everyday was an adventure with a vocabulary lesson that I’m going to miss. All my preconceived concerns were vanquished due to his quality of care and understanding in cultural differences. He truly took care of us. I will never forget him! The tour itself was interesting and was an ideal mix of eventful and relaxing. Even though it covers lots of ground, there isn’t a lack of interesting topics to cover while going through it. I would and have been highly recommending this tour with Jamal over and over again. Yala!

Many thanks for the wonderful recommendation! We are so pleased you enjoyed your time in Morocco!

13 Days - Best of Morocco

My husband and I had an amazing time with the tour. It’s not our first time in Morocco but we definitely learned so much more and got to see beautiful places we haven’t been to before. A million thanks to Jamal, our wonderful tour guide, and to Mustafa, who drove us safely and comfortably all throughout. Jamal really took care of all our needs and concerns. The side trips and extra/optional tours were all just great. We’re happy to be in the company of fellow travelers who shared the same passion of exploring new places/countries. Our favorites are the Safari camel ride and the relaxing days in Essaouira. We highly recommend this tour especially Jamal as the tour guide and Mustafa as the driver.

Thank you so much for the awesome feedback!

Totally Morocco - Fantastic!

Just returned from a 9-day tour of Morocco (Totally Morocco) that was put together by On the Go Tours. The itinerary, the food, the shopping, our tour guide - Jamal, our driver – Mustafa, the city tour guides, plus the people on the tour with us made the whole experience amazing. Morocco surprised me - we had so many unexpected great experiences and saw so many great sights. My favorites were camping in the Sahara (which was an unforgettable experience), the arts and crafts in Fez, attending a Hammam, hot air ballooning in Marrakesh and so many more. Some of these were not part of the tour but extras which Jamal organized. I would highly recommend using On The Go Tours to tour Morocco especially with Jamal as the tour guide. Yalla!

We are so pleased you enjoyed your time with us and hope to welcome you on holiday again very soon!

We were part of a South American tour…

We were part of a South American tour from January 8th to January 28th, 2024. We are very happy about this trip, and especially the excellent work of our guide Etienne Frans. He organized everything perfectly, was always ready to support us and made the whole tour very informative. We are very grateful to him!

13 day tour of Morocco - On the go Tours

I did the 13 day tour of Morocco with on the go Tours Feb 24. Tour guide Jamal was the best guide. He was not only our tour guide but our language teacher, history teacher and also a comedian. The tour group was the perfect size (9 in total ) and the vehicle and accommodation was comfortable. I would recommend this tour to anyone especially with Jamal.

We are so pleased you enjoyed your time with us in Morocco!

Bad experience. Would not recommend

We did the Norway Fjords and Charms 8 day tour with Helena (tour guide). Unfortunately, she was disorganized and incompetent and didn’t know anything about Norway. She made us eat in gas stations most of the trip and would tell us about all of the sites that were cool but that we couldn’t see because it would be closed by the time we arrived. I’ll never use this company again because of her. The bus driver (Tomash) was wonderful and the accommodations were good.

We are sincerely sorry to note your disappointment and have passed your feedback to our country manager for review.

What we know about Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse

The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed early Tuesday after being hit by a cargo ship, with large parts of the bridge falling into the Patapsco River.

At least eight people fell into the water, members of a construction crew working on the bridge at the time, officials said. Two were rescued, one uninjured and one in serious condition, and two bodies were recovered on Wednesday. The remaining four are presumed dead. The workers are believed to be the only victims in the disaster.

Here’s what we know so far.

Baltimore bridge collapse

How it happened: Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after being hit by a cargo ship . The container ship lost power shortly before hitting the bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) said. Video shows the bridge collapse in under 40 seconds.

Victims: Divers have recovered the bodies of two construction workers , officials said. They were fathers, husbands and hard workers . A mayday call from the ship prompted first responders to shut down traffic on the four-lane bridge, saving lives.

Economic impact: The collapse of the bridge severed ocean links to the Port of Baltimore, which provides about 20,000 jobs to the area . See how the collapse will disrupt the supply of cars, coal and other goods .

Rebuilding: The bridge, built in the 1970s , will probably take years and cost hundreds of millions of dollars to rebuild , experts said.

March 27, 2024 - Baltimore Key Bridge collapse

By Kathleen Magramo , Antoinette Radford, Alisha Ebrahimji , Maureen Chowdhury , Elise Hammond , Tori B. Powell and Aditi Sangal , CNN

Our live coverage of the Baltimore bridge collapse has moved here .

Here's what you should know about the Key Bridge collapse

From CNN staff

A Marine Emergency Team boat passes the wreckage of the Dali cargo vessel in Baltimore on Tuesday.

Officials recovered the bodies of two construction workers who were on Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge when it collapsed early Tuesday morning after a 984-foot-long cargo ship collided into a pillar.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore called the collapse Wednesday " a global crisis ."

"The national economy and the world's economy depends on the Port of Baltimore. The port handles more cars and more farm equipment than any other port in the country," Moore said.

Here's what you should know:

  • The victims: The six people who are presumed dead were from Mexico Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, according to Col. Roland L. Butler Jr, the superintendent of Maryland State Police. Two bodies were recovered and have been identified as Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes from Mexico and Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera from Guatemala. The two workers were filling potholes on the bridge and were later found trapped in a red pickup truck in about 25 feet of water, Butler said. The FBI is handling notifying the victims' families, Butler said.
  • Recovery efforts: Authorities are pausing search efforts for the four other workers who are presumed dead, because additional vehicles are encased in concrete and other debris, making it unsafe for divers, Butler said. Once salvage operations clear the debris, divers will search for more remains, he said.
  • The investigation: The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the fatal incident, according to the agency's chair Jennifer Homendy. During a Wednesday news conference, Homendy said there were 21 crew members and two pilots on board the Dali cargo ship when it crashed into the bridge. She also said a senior NTSB hazmat investigator identified 56 containers of hazardous material, and that some containers are in the water. The agency received six hours of voyage data from the ship and the investigation could take 12 to 24 months to complete, Homendy said. She emphasized that NTSB will not analyze information collected or provide conclusions while on scene of the collapse.
  • Looking forward: Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said rebuilding the bridge will not be "quick or easy" but that it will get done. He said there are four main focus points ahead: reopening the port, dealing with supply chain issues until its reopening, rebuilding the bridge and dealing with traffic issues until the bridge is rebuilt. Biden  pledged the full support  of the federal government in the response and recovery efforts. His administration has already conveyed a sense of urgency to open up federal funding to remove debris and ultimately rebuild the bridge. Maryland has submitted a request to the Biden administration for emergency relief funds "to assist in our work going forward," Moore said Wednesday.

It's almost impossible to place people on the bow of ship due to the unstable structure, fire official says

 From CNN's Sarah Engel

Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace said Wednesday that the cargo ship's bridge structure and containers at the bow remain unstable.

"It's going to be very difficult, if not impossible, and very dangerous, to place people on the bow of that boat right now," Wallace told CNN's Kaitlan Collins.

"Naturally, we're still very cognizant of the fact that there are hazardous materials on board the vessel itself," Wallace said, alluding to the National Transportation Safety Board saying earlier that 56 containers were carrying hazardous materials.

Wallace said his team is relying heavily on aerial recognizance, including drones. "That's the only way we're able to see in," he said.

He added that the aerial surveillance has "been able to really assure us right now we have no [chemical] reactions on board."

"It's just utter devastation," NTSB chief says of the bridge collapse site

From CNN's Aditi Sangal

Jennifer Homendy, chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, called the site of the Key Bridge collapse "devastating."

"It's pretty devastating, certainly, seeing not just what's going on with the cargo containers, but just looking at what was a bridge span — three bridge spans that is pretty much gone. It's just utter devastation," she said at Wednesday evening's news briefing.

She added that she is thinking of families who lost loved ones and those who are waiting to reunite with their lived ones.

NTSB interviewed the Dali's captain and some other crew members today, agency chief says

The National Transportation Safety Board has interviewed the ship's captain, his mate, the chief engineer and one other engineer today, according to Chair Jennifer Homendy.

The two pilots on board the Dali at the time of collision will be interviewed tomorrow, she added.

Cargo ship's voyage data recorder is basic when compared to an airplane's, NTSB chair says

From CNN's Tori B. Powell

The voyage data recorder on the cargo ship Dali was a "newer model" but is considered basic when compared to that on an airplane, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.

"But it is very basic compared to say, a flight data recorder, where we would have 1,000 parameters," she said at a news conference on Wednesday.

The NTSB chief investigator Marcel Muise added:

"It's not a ship-wide system recorder, so most of the sensors that are being recorded are from the bridge. So things like GPS, the audio, rudder feedback, rudder commands are recorded on there. But not engineering, the temperature of each cylinder, power distribution sensors."

There were no tug boats with Dali at the time of the collision. That's normal, NTSB chief says

People look at the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge while visiting Fort McHenry in Baltimore on Wednesday.

There were no tugs with Dali when the cargo vessel collided with Baltimore's Key Bridge, which is normal protocol, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.

Remember: At 01:26:39 on Tuesday, Dali's pilot made a general very high frequency (VHF) radio call for tugs in the vicinity to assist, the NTSB investigator Marcel Muise had said.

"The tugs help the vessel leave the dock, leave the port and get into the main ship channel. And then they leave. Once it's on its way, it's a straight shot through the channel. So there are no tugs with the vessel at the time. So they were calling for tugs," she said.

NTSB chair says she saw some containers that were carrying hazardous materials in the water

National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy said she did see some of the 56 containers that were carrying hazardous materials in the water.

When asked how many

When asked how many containers of hazardous materials were in the water, Homendy said:

"I did see some containers in the water, and some breached significantly on the vessel itself," she said. "I don't have an exact number, but it's something that we can provide in an update."

Homendy said that a preliminary report should be out in two to four weeks.

This post has been updated with more quotes from Homendy.

Bridge did not have any redundancy, unlike the preferred method for building bridges today, NTSB chair says

Baltimore's Key Bridge did not have any redundancy, which is included in the preferred method of building bridges in the present day, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.

"The bridge is a fracture critical," she explained. "What that means is if a member fails that would likely cause a portion of, or the entire bridge, to collapse, there's no redundancy. The preferred method for building bridges today is that there is redundancy built in, whether that's transmitting loads to another member or some sort of structural redundancy. This bridge did not have redundancy," Homendy said.

There are 17,468 fracture critical bridges in the United States out of 615,000 bridges total, she said, citing the Federal Highway Administration.
