tourist bus simulator xbox review

With a huge array of simulator games from power washing to showering with your dad, there is always a sense of intrigue surrounding experiences where you can conduct real-life tasks. The bus simulation genre became quickly popular around seven years ago. There was suddenly a huge abundance of YouTube and streamed content from big influencers focusing on these adventures, simply driving around inner-city and suburban areas running your own bus company. After four years on the PC platform,  Tourist Bus Simulator  eventually lands on the Xbox platform. Developed by Zero Games Studio and TML Studios and published by Aerosoft GmbH, you now have the opportunity to jet to the iconic holiday of Fuerteventura. Here you’ll be responsible for your very own bus company and reliant on the tourist climate to boost your business. If you’re a fan of Bus Simulator and Bus Simulator 21 which have featured on the Xbox platform previously, then you may just want to keep reading.

Introduction & Tutorial

Starting life in Fuerteventura, you’ll be picking up the keys to start life running your very own bus company. Be prepared for the long haul as there is a very intuitive tutorial which will guide you through how to get started. You aren’t just thrown into the front end of a bus and told to drive. You’ll be shown how to purchase buses, set the routes you cover, how you hire and deploy staff and negotiate your work schedule and calendar. It doesn’t ever really feel like a tutorial but more of a hand holding exercise through the process and function of managing your business. Opening up the map I was surprised at simply how vast in size it was. The entire island is present and features 20 cities and beaches with all roads, dirt tracks and unmarked roads intertwining them together. Now I’ve never been to Fuerteventura, but I’d imagine the development team has ensured that the landmarks and horizons are as true to life as possible. After around five hours, I finally completed the tutorial and was left to my own devices.

The most paramount and important factor of a simulation game with driving involved is obviously the driving mechanics, thankfully it all appeared pretty solid in this area. You have to be mindful as ever about your manoeuvring and how you navigate the roads. Damage to your vehicle fleet will incur a cost from your revenue as you’ll need to maintain repairs. Run through a speed camera over the speed limit and you’ll be expected to pay the cost of the fine. Again, it is totally up to you if you want to adhere to the rules of the highways or drive however you want. I took great pleasure in taking my own car for a spin between driving buses and going as fast as possible. The result was almost $1000 in fines and flipping my vehicle onto the roof.

The majority of the gameplay outside of looking after your booming bus business is simply driving your fleet of buses on several routes that you can choose. The contract offers come in thick and fast when you establish your reputation. Be mindful and cautious of what you’re accepting though as you’ll need staff and functional vehicles to consistently cover the routes. Don’t turn up for a job and you’ll quickly find contracts being pulled. There are different types of routes to choose from when it comes to transporting passengers around the island. You could simply choose trips that are focused on getting people from one end of the island to the other. You’ll also want to capitalise on the tourist market by taking them from the airport to the hotel and offering sightseeing tours around the island provides an opportunity for growth.

Managing the Business

Many may just want to dip into a bus simulator title for the interest in buses and the driving, I became quickly engrossed with other aspects. The obsession with keeping one eye on finances and the other on your fleet and routes becomes quickly addictive. You’ll start the game with around £200,000 which is enough to get you going with a few buses and minimal staff. If this isn’t enough cash then bank loans are available, but be wary of your dedicated repayment plans and other running costs. The fleet of buses will need consistent and constant maintenance as they gain wear and tear, damage and rack the miles up. The responsibility is also yours to keep your eye on insurance payments and select different types according to your requirements.

Staff management is also a fun factor of the game. You’ll be able to purchase property and have some limited interior design options, you can sort this accommodation for your staff members across the length of the island. Recruit drivers, tour guides and mechanics as your empire grows from strength to strength. You can even sort out gym memberships for staff and ensure they relax in their downtime on the plethora of beaches and bars. Aside from this, you can also manage stock levels of onboard snacks and drinks and even WiFi for your customers. You can spend hours looking at screens of analytical data of where your money is coming in and going out, staff wages and much more.

Graphics & Audio

The visual department is probably the biggest letdown in  Tourist Bus Simulator.  If you have played previous titles in the genre, you’ll immediately become accustomed to the overall look of this game. Whilst the map of Fuerteventura is pretty vast in size, it, unfortunately, doesn’t look pretty. Graphics look basic and akin to aesthetics you’d experience on an early generation Xbox One. Passengers look and function almost robotic-like, all walking with the same posture. When your customers have boarded and you look around the bus’s interior, you’ll immediately realise that little work has gone into the character modelling. On one small minibus, I experienced three male passengers with exactly the same face, clothing and hairstyle. Often I saw passengers disappear into the ground or vanish completely whilst gazing from the windscreen.

There’s some good stuff here though. Lighting seemed exceptional, especially when it came to the day and night cycle. Sunlight can beam through the windscreen and really hamper your vision whilst driving in the dark bringing a new wealth of challenges to how you go about the roads. Road signs and markings are clearly marked out and buildings were well illustrated. Often in sim games, you see repeated building types but everything appeared unique here.

Audio is a fairly minimalistic factor in  Tourist Bus Simulator . I was fairly impressed with the woosh sound as cars passed by on the busy high-speed roads. Everything else was as expected, crashes, engine running and horns all did the job. Driving around just got a little stale to the point where some radio music would have been appreciated even if it was unlicensed music on a low volume, it would have added to the atmosphere.

tourist bus simulator xbox review

In Conclusion

You soon realise that there is much more to Tourist Bus Simulator than just ferrying passengers from A to B. It can be an endless experience if you really want it to be, there is no ultimate goal and a deep, rich and engaging management experience. The choice is in the hands of the player, whilst I enjoyed completing the driving elements of the game, I became quickly drawn in by buying and selling buses, hiring and managing staff and purchasing property and stock. The lack of variance in character models and some of the bugs here and there knock the overall experience down a peg or two, but there is a solid playable package here. Whether you’re a bus enthusiast or someone who love simulator games and has played previous Bus Sim titles, you’ll have a blast with it.

  • 70% CX Score - 70%
  • A deep and rich management aspect alongside the bus driving
  • The island is a generous size with lots of roads to drive along
  • Driving mechanics are pretty solid
  • Character models are lacklustre and repeated lots
  • Could do with some in-game radio in the vehicles
  • Visually, it’s not the best

Tourist Bus Simulator Review (PS5) – Seems Like A Bad Port of The PC Version

Has the potential to be an interesting management sim, but there’s just too many issues

Tourist Bus Simulator PS5 Review screensot of bus

This will be a somewhat short review of Tourist Bus simulator on PS5 as I still had progression issues with one of the early missions. As I explained in my Tourist Bus Simulator preview article , I could not seem to progress from ‘The First Trip’ mission. Unfortunately, this meant that I could not really get to experience all that Tourist Bus Simulator on PS5 had to offer.

Tourist Bus Simulator PS5 Review – Has Potential But Too Many Issues

Tourist Bus Simulator is a simulation and management game that takes place on the Spanish island of Fuerteventura. You arrive at the airport and are tasked with essentially building up a Tourist Bus company. To become a successful business, you can buy buses, hire drivers and take tourists on scheduled trips and sightseeing tours.

Tourist Bus Simulator was released on PC in 2018 and the general premise of the game seems perfectly fine. Drive buses around, buy new buses and build up your company to be successful. Unfortunately, though, the game seems like a fairly bad port to console and thus comes with several issues.

Tourist Bus Simulator PS5 Review screenshot

The Good Parts

Before I get into the problems I encountered I will first say that there were some good points about Tourist Bus Simulator on PS5.

The Driving Is Nice

Firstly, before you even get to drive a bus, you have to drive your own car from the airport to your new company offices. The first thing I noticed was that the driving mechanics were pretty solid. Driving feels quite realistic and responsive. The vehicles are also nicely detailed both on the outside and the inside. The dashboards for example are well detailed and feature what you would find in a real bus I presume.

There are different control options that you can choose when you start the game: Basic controls, which are simple driving controls (R2 to accelerate, L2 to brake) and advanced controls. The advanced controls mean you have to go into the game’s cross menu to change gear (into reverse for example), release the parking brake and turn on the engine.

Tourist Bus Simulator, screenshot of the vehicle dashboard

There is also a custom control option where you can check some boxes to have basic controls for some things and advanced for others. I liked the advanced controls and it did make driving and operating the vehicles seem more realistic but my main playtime was spent on the basic controls. Because I am a bit of a noob at simulation games.

The Graphics and Island aren’t too bad either

Tourist Bus Simulator is built on Unreal Engine 4 and although the graphics aren’t of AAA game quality they are pretty nice. The vehicles look great and as I said are pretty nicely detailed. The island also looks great with good amounts of detailing on the buildings and texturing on the landscape elements.

The island of Fuerteventura also seems pretty large, probably not the biggest of game maps but is of an adequate size where it does take a reasonable amount of time to drive from one place to another. The developers have also done a great job with the sound in the game. When driving down a highway you can hear the whooshing sound as other cars and vehicles pass you. It does give you the sense of driving down the open road.

Tourist Bus Simulator in-game map

The Not So Good Parts

Although my playtime with Tourist Bus Simulator was relatively short owing to the progressions problem I faced, I did notice some other problems with the game. I can only imagine I might have found even more issues was I able to progress further and play longer.

Progression Problems

The main negative I had with this game was the fact that I seemingly couldn’t progress further than the “The First Trip” mission. I detailed exactly what the problem was in my preview article so I won’t bother going into detail here. But needless to say, I couldn’t get past this particular mission. Whether it was a glitch or me just being completely dumb I am not entirely sure. But the game didn’t provide any hints or prompts or any other information that may have helped me figure out what was going wrong.

I also contacted the developer via the PR rep about the progression issue. But they were unable to provide any information that could solve the problem. They also stated that there was a patch (launch day patch) but there was no update for the game on PS5. I was still at version 1.000.000

A Seemingly Poor Port That Has A Few Issues

As I mentioned previously the game just seems like a bad port of the PC version. Sure the UI has the PlayStation button icons, but the game menus, in particular, seem like they are probably more suited to a keyboard and mouse rather than a DualSense controller.

There were also a few glitches during my short playthrough. At the start of the game whilst in the airport, I noticed that when I walked up to a certain area that part of the building would disappear and I could see outside. Like the graphics just de-rendered. There were also other graphical glitches present in the game. I (and other players who commented on my YouTube videos ) have noticed some pop-in. And also Things like blank black patches on paths and missing doorframes.

Who Knew You Could Do GTA in Tourist Bus Simulator?

In one of my early restarts of the game to try and fix the progression issue, I also somehow managed to flip my car on its side after a crash. This seemed to break the game a bit. I could enter and exit the car but could not see a way to get the car upright again. Thus leading to yet another new game. During this crazy flipped car incident, I was able to see under the map and even was able to “steal” another car and drive it. Albeit the camera angle was a bit weird, so I am pretty sure you are not supposed to be able to “steal” another car. Check out the video below to see what I mean.

YouTube player

My last major problem with the game was the sun. The sun was way too bright. Driving in the direction of the sun during the day pretty much makes you blind and you cannot see anything in front of you. There also seemed to be no sun visor option. It wasn’t just the sun though, certain areas at night were far too dark so the game definitely has some lighting problems as well.

Tourist Bus Simulator Review screenshot - The sun is far too bright

Conclusion – could potentially be a great simulation and management game but just not on PS5

Tourist Bus Simulator certainly has all the makings of a great simulation and management game with some great driving thrown in. Unfortunately, I just found there to be too many problems, with the biggest being the progression issue I faced. The game does seem to have a lot to offer but sadly the glaring issues let it down badly. There is certainly enough in the game to keep someone playing for hours and hours. Trying to build your business into a booming success does look like it would be pretty fun. But sadly it really does seem like a bad port from the PC version. And even though I only managed to play the early stages of the game, there were too many issues for me to be able to recommend it.

Tourist Bus Simulator is out now for PS5.

Bus Simulator Review

Gareth Brierley

In my head, there are two versions of what a bus driving job entails. The first is the vision of my childhood where the driver is a real-life hero who would pick us up from wherever we would be stood, beckoning us on-board his magical bus full of multiple buttons and gadgets. The other though is the one which I’ve begun to understand the older I’ve got, that of a poor local bus driver driving the night bus on a Saturday night, after the pubs have turned out, and the utter joy that obviously brings. With the release of Bus Simulator, I was interested to find out what version I would become.

bus simulator review xbox one 1

You start things off in Bus Simulator in a large fictional city – Seaside Valley – which comes with 12 different districts that cover areas such as industrial, commercial, and more. Now for some reason, there has been a problem with the public transport system of Seaside Valley in the past so you’ve been brought in to deliver your bus expertise to try and sort the problem out. You start the game with a tutorial that puts you on a small route of just five stops and from there on out, you’re thrown into the world of Bus Simulator with your first day on the buses.

Thankfully you can choose your level of difficulty depending on the skill set and level of detail you feel most comfortable with; amending exactly how realistic you wish your bus driving job to be. You are also given the first of eight different buses which you can collect and customise to your heart’s desire. More decals, a variety of colours and all manner of other details become available as you level up so you can truly pimp your bus out however you see fit. It has to be said though that the buttons, knobs and levers you need to familiarise yourself with whilst in the bus are pretty tricky and complex to understand initially, but they are not in any way as deep as the likes found in Train Sim World . You soon work out how to start the bus, turn off the parking brake and indicate to others that you are on your way.

The bus handles well and driving it becomes second nature after you’ve spent time completing multiple shifts, as you slowly but surely begin to work out what the bus can or can’t do. At the end of the day though you’ll basically be left to drive as safely as you can along a specific bus route which is displayed on your sat nav, pulling up to the curb, opening the doors and letting passengers on for the ride of their lives.

tourist bus simulator xbox review

Half of the passengers will just walk in and sit down because they have a prepaid ticket or travel pass (even though they don’t ever show you these), whilst others will want to buy a ticket there and then. It is here that with a quick touch of a button, you enter into the magical world of ’till mode’. Here you listen to what they want – for example, a one day ticket with a student discount – and you select the right details on the ticket machine screen and print out a ticket. You then give them change according to what is owed by selecting through a number of cash tabs at the bottom of the till. The prices of the tickets are madly varied though and don’t make much sense, which has made me think there must be some kind of high level corruption going on in this city. But hey, who am I to question things, I’m just the bus driver.

When you’ve completed your route, you get money and a star rating. In order to get the very highest rating you need to drive perfectly, avoiding other vehicles, refusing to mow down pedestrians, taking speed bumps carefully, and keeping an eye on a multitude of speed cameras. But the very best bus drivers also have other things to contend with too; sometimes your passengers will be playing loud music and you will have to pull over to tell them off, whilst at other times you’ll need to keep your bus clean from litter, picking up the odd discarded coffee cup and the like.

The money you earn can be used to hire other drivers, getting them to do the work for you, leaving them to drive specific routes that you’ve created. And in regards to that route creation, there is a lovely tool which lets you select and create routes that cover a variety of distances, areas, and bus stops along the way. There is also a pretty decent mission structure that will guide you through the game slowly until you unlock all the features.

tourist bus simulator xbox review

It has to be said that no matter what you hope for, Bus Simulator can become very dull and repetitive after a while. However, there is a strange type of relaxing satisfaction to the gameplay; one that maybe only true sim lovers will understand. Later on in the game the routes get longer and you’ll find yourself putting in huge shifts that seem to last an age. Putting on some music and wondering about life choices is the order of the day here.

There are also moments where the conversion from PC to console hasn’t been entirely successful – particularly in the controls department. See, it’s easy to get lost with the instructions as they are a bit unclear at what you need to do next, and when you combine it with a few bugs, frustration arises. One time a passenger just stood in the doorway of my bus and refused to move so I couldn’t close the door. After a standoff of 30 minutes, I reloaded my save.

I do like the way that Bus Simulator on Xbox One looks though and Seaside Valley is a nice city to drive around, with plenty of different features to take in and some nice weather effects bringing it to life. It’s not like this is going to win awards on the visual front, but driving in the rain sees the general public running around looking for shelter, which is a great little touch. The actual bus looks like, well, a bus, and so that is fine and whilst I have found the animations of the passengers fairly good, there are far too many clones living in this city; it’s like some sort of strange Twin Peaks convention.

The soundtrack is inoffensive too, with some lovely easy listening tracks playing on the radio stations of the bus. One word of advice though is to kickback with Spotify playing over the effects of the game; it makes the night shift on a long route go a lot faster.

tourist bus simulator xbox review

From just looking at the title of the game you will know whether you’re going to love Bus Simulator on Xbox One or not. The gameplay is a slog at times, but the repetitive nature is also sort of soothing to the soul, with the missions bringing a bit of reason to why you are there and allowing you to continue playing in order to unlock things. Yes there are some bugs in terms of the visuals and gameplay mechanics, but even though I’ve had to reload things more than once, it hasn’t dampened my love for this new bus driving career that I’ve taken in.

If you’ve always wanted to be a bus driver but don’t want to leave the house, then you should be checking out Bus Simulator.
