Visitors to Dubai will no longer be granted a 10-day grace period if their tourist visa expires, according to local travel agents and call centre workers.

Previously, anyone who stayed beyond the validity of their visa were allowed to stay an extra 10 days in the emirate before fines were levied.

Now those who overstay their visa will have to pay a fine of Dh50 per day.

A statement on the removal on the grace period is expected from the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) on Thursday.

An ICP call centre agent on Wednesday confirmed the end of the grace period for visit visas issued in the UAE. Other emirates had already removed the grace period for visit visas, with Dubai the last emirate to have it in force.

“The 10-day grace period for visit visa holders is not applicable any more. The new rules were implemented recently,” the agent told The National on Wednesday.

“If the visit visa holder stays after the expiry date then overstay fines will be implemented. People should apply for a 30-day extension visa to stay legally in the country.”

A Dubai-based travel agent also said the 10-day grace period is no longer available.

“Recently we noticed that Dubai scrapped the 10-day grace period for visit visa holders,” a representative of the travel agent told The National .

A customer service agent at Amer service centre in Dubai similarly confirmed the end of the grace period.

“Holders of visit visas issued by Dubai immigration should apply for an extension to their visa before the expiry date or leave the country. They can apply for 30 days extension for Dh800,” the agent said.

ICP in October revised the daily fine from Dh100 down to Dh50 .

A new set of visas were introduced in October last year to allow holidaymakers to stay for 60 days at a time.

The decision to make all entry visas valid for 60 days from the date of issue ― double the previous allowance ― was one of a series of visa changes approved by the UAE Cabinet in April.

Previously, there was no specific visa for tourists and those wishing to visit the UAE applied for 30-, 60- or 90-day visas.

All entry visas are available for single or multiple entry and can be renewed for a further 60 days.

Visitors who stay beyond the time allowed without renewing their visas can also be arrested for staying in the country illegally. Inspection campaigns are regularly carried out to catch offenders.

How to Check My Visit Visa Expiry Date in UAE?

Do you know the status of your UAE Visit Visa? It is important to know when your UAE Visit visa will expire and its validity. In addition, it is important to know how you check the UAE Visit Visa application status.

The government of the United Arab Emirates has made it easy to check UAE Visit Visa Validity through the UAE government website. After entering your details, it is a one-stop place where you check all about the UAE Visit Visa.

Therefore, if you want to check your UAE visit visa validity, visit the Federal Authority for Identity & Citizenship, Customs & Port Security website.

Whether you are in UAE on a residence or visit visa, don't forget to check your visa status and if you need to update the visa before its expiry.

If you fail to check your visa status and it expires while in UAE, you will be required to pay fines and penalties for overstaying. You can avoid all this by visiting the website mentioned above and updating your visa because the UAE government offers a grace period after the visa expires to set things straight.

UAE Government Types of Visit Visas

There are two types of UAE visit visas;

  • Single Entry: For single entry visas, you can choose between 1 month and 3 months, with 30 + 10 days or 60 + 10 grace period days beginning on the date of entry to UAE.
  • Multiple Entries: Multiple entry visit visa allowed is valid for 30 or 60 days, and you can leave the country and enter again using the same visa, provided it is still valid. There is no grace period, and you will get fines for overstaying if your visa expires. Hence, it is important to check the status of your visa and note the expiry date.

If you have noticed your UAE visit visa is about to expire, worry not because you can extend your UAE visit visa . The process of extending the visa is hassle-free by even visiting the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICA) website.

Visitors can now enjoy a 30-day visa extension twice (for a total of 60 days), thanks to the most recent reforms passed by the UAE visa system. That means that tourists do not need to leave the country at any point throughout their stay.

The whole process of extending the visit visa will be done while in UAE. You must pay an additional AED 600 for each new extension

If your visit visa expires as a tourist, note you have 10 days grace period to extend your visa or leave the country. After the 10 days are over, you will get fins for overstaying, and each day you will be required to pay 125.00 AED first day and each consecutive day AED 100.

Exception for UAE Visit Visa Extension

There are certain categories of visitors who, even though they are required to have a UAE visit visa while entering the country, are not obliged by the law to extend their visit visa even though it expires. These categories of people are;

  • residents of GCC countries
  • special entry permits
  • 96-hour permit for special missions

All who overstay their visas are subject to fines in the United Arab Emirates. The government of the UAE recognizes that individuals may sometimes have legitimate reasons for overstaying their visas. Therefore rather than blacklisting them and making matters more complicated, they have decided not to do so.

They also acknowledge that these individuals were previously granted permission to reside in the country legally. There is no reason to criminalize or treat them if they have no history of known provocative behavior or criminal activity.

The government of the UAE recognizes and respects the fact that you have a deep affection for their nation and feel the need to remain there for a longer period. So, go ahead and stay. Just so you're aware, you committed some infringement, and as a result, you'll have to pay for it.

Before leaving, all that is required of you is to pay the costs automatically computed for you depending on the number of days you overstayed. After the expiration of the visit visa, everyone is given a grace period of ten extra days.

You are required to leave the state before the 10th day after the visa has expired, or else you will be subject to a penalty of 125.00 AED for the first day and then 100 AED for each day afterward.

If you have overstayed and want to know how much you have been fined, you can visit the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai (GDRFA-Dubai) . We strongly advise that you don't overstay your visit. However, if you do, make the most of it and don't break the law.

How to Check My Visit Visa Expiry Date in UAE?

A visit visa to the UAE can be procured for either 30 or 60 days and converted into either an employment visa or a residency visa.

In the event of a visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), in addition to the payment for the visa itself, a deposit from a local sponsor, relative, or any resident is also necessary. This deposit will be repaid when the tourist has successfully exited the country.

When it comes to employment visas, the decision rests with your company. Within two to five working days after signing the offer letter, your company needs to submit your details, including a copy of your passport, to apply for a residency visa and an Emirates ID on your behalf.

Once this is done, your organization will receive an application form (finished with barcodes and everything), which you will use for a medical fitness exam once it is made available. If your organization chooses to pay for the "VIP" application, the test should be ready within twenty-four hours, but if it is standard, it should be ready between three and five days.

The government of the UAE is continuously making investments in automated systems, and the process is getting better every day. If you pass the physical exam, the results are forwarded to the immigration department responsible for processing your resident visa.

A grace period to exit the UAE for visit visas issued in Dubai is no longer applicable, Khaleej Times can reveal. Travel agents have shared notices about the new directive with their clients.

“There is no grace period anymore. From the date of entry, the stay duration is as per the type of visa (30 days or 60 days),” a travel agent told its clients.

Firosekhan, operation manager at Arabian Business Centre (Amer Centre – Sheikh Zayed Road), told Khaleej Times that all emirates except Dubai had done away with the 10-day grace period for visit visas. The grace period only applied to visas issued in Dubai. From May 15, authorities in Dubai have also removed the grace period. This means a visitor or tourist must exit the country before their visas expire. Failing this, overstay fines will apply.

In separate enquiries, call centre executives from the Federal Authority For Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP) and the GDRFA confirmed that there is no grace period for visit visas issued anywhere in the UAE. Fines are calculated as soon as the document expires.

Grace period used to apply by default

Mir Wasim Raja, manager for MICE and holidays at Galadari International Travel Services, explained how the grace period was calculated and applied previously.

“The moment a visitor enters the country, it is updated on the system by default and a grace period of 10 days was added to both 30 days and 60 days visit visas. However, not the grace period will not be added and the person should exit before the last day of the visa,”

He further said that the system now shows the validity of "30 days" or "60 days" without the grace period for certain visas. “We normally don’t check the number of days left for a visitor to exit the country. We do it only upon request,” said Raja.

Absconding charges

Another travel agent explained that they are compelled to file absconding charges against overstayers. "The visas that an agent issues provide sponsorship for any visitor entering the UAE on a visit visa of either 30 days or 60 days. It causes us difficulties and financial losses when a visitor exceeds the duration of their visa. Therefore, we are compelled to report them for our protection,” said Subair Thekepurathvalappil, senior manager for inbound and outbound operations at Regal Tours Worldwide.

Previously, overstay fines are imposed on agents and then later retrieved from visitors. Back then, the minimum absconding penalty is Dh2,000, which would increase every day, according to experts in the travel industry.

Now, however, travel agents are no longer involved. Visitors will have to pay penalties themselves before exiting the country.

Fines explained

Travel experts urge visitors to exit the country before their visit visa expires. “People feel that it’s okay to extend a day or two and pay relevant fines, which a few of them think are minimal. But it comes with a cost,” said Subair.

Overstaying one's visa is a serious offence and can get a traveller stopped at airports' immigration counters.

“Many visitors are unaware of their visa validity status and overstay a few days. They learn about the overstaying status only when they reach the airport. One must be in touch with the agent and seek information on the visa expiry,” said Raja.

“A person overstaying the visa term will have to pay Dh50 for a day, along with Dh320 for relevant charges and exit permits. A person overstaying for 10 days will have to pay Dh500 plus Dh320, which is Dh820,” said Subair.

Where to pay fees?

“One can pay online at the ICP website before leaving for the airport,” said Subair.

However, if one wishes to pay at the airport, “the immigration officer will stop the overstaying visitor to pay the fine with the relevant fees at the counter,” said Raja.

How long can you stay in UAE after your visit visa expires?

This legal article discusses the recent removal of the grace period for visit visas issued in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). As of May 15, the UAE government has abolished the 10-day grace period that previously applied to visit visas issued in Dubai. Consequently, visitors and tourists are no longer allowed any additional time beyond the visa’s expiration date to exit the country. This article analyzes the legal implications of the new directive and the imposition of fines for overstaying the visa duration.

Introduction

The United Arab Emirates has been a popular destination for tourists and visitors from around the world. To facilitate travel, visit visas were previously accompanied by a grace period, allowing individuals to stay in the country for a limited period even after the visa’s expiration. However, recent developments have led to the elimination of this grace period for visit visas issued in Dubai, and this article aims to explore the legal implications of this change.

Removal of Grace Period for Visit Visas

As of May 15, the UAE authorities, including Dubai, have ceased providing a grace period for visit visas. Travel agents have been informed of this new directive and have been advising their clients accordingly. Visitors are now required to strictly adhere to the duration specified in their visa , which is typically either 30 days or 60 days from the date of entry.

What happens if you overstay your tourist visa in UAE?

Previously, the grace period provided some flexibility for visit visa holders, granting them a few extra days to arrange their departure from the country. With the removal of this grace period, visitors and tourists must now exit the UAE before their visa expires. Failure to comply with this requirement will result in overstay fines being levied upon them.

The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security has implemented uniform fines for overstaying in the country. The recently introduced rules, as part of comprehensive visa reforms announced last month, have resulted in a reduction and standardization of overstaying fees to Dh50. Moreover, individuals who overstay on a residency visa will now be subject to double fines for each day, amounting to Dh50 per day instead of the previous Dh25.

How to Pay Overstay fines for Visit Visa in Dubai?

Overstay fines can be conveniently settled through two options: by visiting customer happiness centers in person or by using the authority’s website and smart application for online payment.

It’s essential to note that any additional days spent on the process of requesting documents or updating information will be considered part of the overstay period. Moreover, applicants must exercise caution during the visa renewal process. If an application is initiated but the correct documents are not uploaded within 30 days or if the wrong documents are uploaded more than three times, the application will be automatically canceled. In such cases, a new application must be filed to proceed with the visa renewal.

Can Tourists on Visit Visa’s extend their stay from within the country?

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has introduced significant reforms to its visa procedures, providing tourists on 30 or 60-day visit visas with the option to extend their stay within the country for an additional 30 days. This move by the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICA) and the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) aims to offer visitors more time to experience the diverse offerings of the UAE. This legal article delves into the details of the recent decision, the extension process, documentation requirements, time duration, fees, and the various purposes the extension serves.

Recent Changes in UAE Visit Visa Procedures

Since October of the previous year, the UAE has witnessed substantial changes in its visa regulations, representing one of the largest reforms in residency and entry permits overseen by the Immigration and Citizenship Program (ICP). Consequently, the visit visa system has also undergone notable developments, giving tourists greater flexibility in extending their stay.

Extension Option and Maximum Duration

As per information available on the ICA website, individuals holding a 30 or 60-day visit visa can now apply for an extension of up to 30 days, subject to a maximum cumulative duration of 120 days within a year. A representative from the Amer Centre’s call center confirmed that multiple extensions can be sought, each lasting up to 30 days.

Initiating the UAE Visit Visa Extension Process

To avail the visa extension, tourists or visitors are advised to get in touch with their travel agent or sponsor. The operation manager at Arabian Business Centre, Firose Khan, emphasized the importance of contacting the visa issuing agent well in advance of the current visa’s expiration to ensure a smooth extension process. The agent or sponsor will provide guidance on the necessary documentation, fees, and other relevant information.

Required Documentation for UAE Visit Visa Extension

To apply for a visit visa extension, tourists need to present their passport. Specific details regarding the required documents will be provided by the issuing agent.

Time Duration for UAE Visit Visa Extension and Fees

The duration of the extension process may take a few days, depending on the travel agent handling the application. However, the ICP website mentions that the service can be completed within 48 hours after all requirements are fulfilled. The cost of extending the visa for one month amounts to Dh1,050, as explained by Khan.

Detailed Visa Extension Charges

The GDRFA has laid out the extension charges on their website, which include:

  • Visa Extension Fee: Dh600 + 5% Value Added Tax (VAT)
  • Knowledge Dirham: Dh10
  • Innovation Dirham: Dh10
  • Fee Inside the Country: Dh500

It’s essential to note that the total visa amount may vary depending on the sponsored person’s circumstances or other relevant factors.

Application Process and Recommendations

The application for an extension of the entry permit for tourism is made through tourism companies. Agents strongly advise visitors to leave the country before their visa expires or extend their visas to avoid penalties or difficulties during the exit process.

The extension caters to various purposes, including tourism, family visits, business meetings, and other personal matters. With this extra time, visitors can explore the UAE’s iconic landmarks, indulge in shopping, enjoy culinary delights, and experience the world-class hospitality offered by the country.

Legal Consequences of Overstaying Visit Visas

Any individual found to be overstaying their visit visa in the UAE will be subject to fines as soon as the visa expires. These fines are calculated based on the number of days the individual has overstayed, and the amounts may vary depending on the visa type and the duration of the overstay.

Compliance and Enforcement

The UAE authorities take visa regulations seriously and have strict measures in place to enforce compliance. Border control officials and immigration authorities are vigilant in monitoring visa expirations and identifying individuals who have overstayed their allowed duration. Once an individual is found to be in violation, the overstay fines will be imposed immediately, and further legal actions may be taken, including deportation and entry bans for future visits.

Clarifications on Applicability

It is important to note that the elimination of the grace period applies specifically to visit visas issued in Dubai. As mentioned earlier, other emirates had already removed the grace period, making Dubai the final emirate to implement this change. Therefore, all visitors and tourists entering the UAE through Dubai must be aware of this modification to the visa regulations.

Recommendation and Conclusion

In light of this new directive, it is crucial for all visitors and tourists planning to enter the UAE to be fully informed about the specific terms and conditions of their visit visas. Travel agents and other relevant parties must ensure that their clients are aware of the elimination of the grace period and the potential consequences of overstaying their visas. Furthermore, visitors should exercise diligence and compliance with the visa regulations to avoid any legal complications or financial penalties.

The UAE’s decision to eliminate the grace period for visit visas issued in Dubai signifies a shift towards stricter enforcement of visa regulations. Visitors and tourists are now required to adhere strictly to the visa duration specified upon entry, and any overstay beyond the visa expiration date will result in fines being imposed. Understanding these legal implications is crucial for ensuring a smooth and compliant travel experience in the UAE.

5 visa updates for 2024 that Indian travellers will benefit from

Panchali Dey , TIMESOFINDIA.COM , TRAVEL NEWS , WORLD Updated : Apr 5, 2024, 09:24 IST

uae visit visa validity period

With the summer holiday season fast approaching, it's time to start mapping out your travel plans. And as you do, it's also essential to stay updated on the latest visa regulations to ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey. Also, staying updated will help you choose your options more wisely, and make the most out of it. In short, knowing the visa requirements and updates can make all the difference.

Here are some noteworthy visa updates for 2024 that every Indian traveller should be aware of.

Japan's introduction of eVisas for Indian travellers

Japan has launched eVisa applications for Indian travellers. Administered by Japan Visa Application Centers operated by VFS Global, this streamlined process retains the familiar steps of submitting documents and applications to VFS. Designed for short-term tourism, the eVisa will be offering a single-entry option allowing stays of up to 90 days. Both Indian nationals and foreigners residing in India are eligible to submit their applications.

Notably, visas will now be issued electronically rather than as physical stickers in passports. Upon approval, travellers must present a visa issuance notice on their mobile device at the airport, necessitating internet access. Do note that alternative formats such as PDFs or printed copies of the eVisa will not be accepted.

Dubai's introduces five-year, multiple-entry tourist visa

Recently, Dubai unveiled a fresh visa initiative designed specifically for Indian tourists, as there was a notable surge in Indian visitor numbers. This visa scheme provides a five-year, multiple-entry permit, allowing travelers to stay for up to 90 days per visit, extendable once, with an annual limit of 180 days.

This visa will cater to both business and leisure trips, and will allow unlimited entries and exits within the five-year period. Requirements will include a passport photo, six months' worth of bank statements showing a balance of at least $4,000 (INR 3,33,447), a valid passport with a minimum validity of six months, health insurance, and round-trip flight tickets. The application process will typically take 2-5 days, with submissions accepted through the GDRFA website or app, or the official ICP website.

Thailand's visa-free option for Indian travellers

The Thai Government recently announced a temporary visa exemption for Indian passport holders from November 10, 2023, to May 10, 2024. During this period, Indian travellers can enter Thailand for tourism purposes without requiring a tourist visa, enjoying a 30-day stay.

Kenya's eliminates visa requirements

Effective January 1, Kenya eliminated visa requirements for not only Indian citizens, but also for all global visitors, in a move aimed at bolstering the nation's vital tourism sector. This visa-free initiative will facilitate seamless travel experiences for visitors keen on wildlife safaris and beach vacations.

Romania and Bulgaria's access to Schengen Visas

Romania and Bulgaria have partially joined the Schengen Area, expanding the scope of the Schengen visa to include 29 countries across continental Europe. This means Indian travellers can now obtain Schengen visas from Romania and Bulgaria, permitting stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. However, do note that visas issued before April 1 by these two countries won't grant access to the entire Schengen area. Travellers from non-Schengen countries may still undergo passport checks when travelling between different Schengen destinations. Visa issuance for Bulgaria and Romania can be processed on their respective official websites.
