The Principality of Liechtenstein has an area of 160 square kilometers, which makes it one of the smallest states in Europe. The princely residence presides high above the little town of Vaduz, which is the capital of the principality and has about 5,000 inhabitants. The medieval castle was upgraded in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Description

The people of Liechtenstein call their main town "Staedtle" or "LIttle Town" and their country "Laendle" or "Little Country". Considering the geographic size of the country, these diminutives are apt, but not at all so if one thinks of the history and importance of Vaduz as a financial center. For hundreds of years culinary specialties have been enjoyed in the Old Town, at the Loewen Inn, for example, which has been in existence since 1380. The Art Museum (Kunstmuseum) of Liechtenstein houses one of Europe's oldest private collections in a modern, prize-winning museum building. The Regional Museum showcases the history of the principality and a visit to the Stamp Museum is a must for every philatelist. Castle Vaduz is the emblem of Liechtenstein and the residence of the royal family.

As a monarchy in the Alps, Liechtenstein enjoys a special position. The principality’s motto «Simply Princely» reflects the main reason why people visit Liechtenstein and is at the same time a promise of quality. Liechtenstein is also the name of one of the oldest noble families in Europe.

We do things our own way and have the courage and confidence to set new trends. Our appreciation of both humankind and nature keeps our feet on the ground.

Liechtenstein is a reliable partner. Our word is our bond – a quality reflected in the country‘s AAA rating.

Liechtenstein’s small size and streamlined bureaucracy make it possible for the country to be quick and agile. This dynamism is one of the principality’s great qualities.

The Principality of Liechtenstein’s 300-year history has witnessed the country’s transformation into a modern business location with a high standard of living.

The Principality of Liechtenstein

The Principality of Liechtenstein is located in the heart of Europe’s alpine region, between Switzerland and Austria. It is home to around 40,000 inhabitants. Covering an area of 160km², it is the fourth-smallest state in Europe and the sixth-smallest in the world. Yet, despite its compact size, the Principality of Liechtenstein offers everything you could wish for: mighty mountain landscapes, a vibrant cultural scene, charming villages and plenty of opportunities for entrepreneurs.

Travel bucket list Liechtenstein

Although Liechtenstein is the sixth smallest country in the world, it surprises with a wealth of cultural, scenic and historical treasures. Here are our 5 reasons why the Principality of Liechtenstein should be on your travel bucket list.

Did you know that...

... with an area of just 160km² Liechtenstein is the fourth-smallest country in Europe and the sixth-smallest country in the world?

... with one business for every eight citizens, Liechtenstein probably has the highest proportion of companies per capita of any country in the world?

... Liechtenstein has won ten Olympic medals?

... around half of Liechtenstein's territory is mountainous and that Liechtenstein is the only country with 100% of its area in the alpine region?

... industry and manufacturing generate 40% of the country's gross value added?

Vaduz is the capital city of Liechtenstein and has a population of 5,700 (2019). It's home to the prince's castle and his museums, and thus the main point of interest for visitors to this small country. However, some people consider it to be a rather disappointing hodge-podge of unattractive modern buildings, cranes and farmland, so while it is a European capital, it may not be of interest to some visitors for more than a quick stop.

Understand [ edit ]

Vaduz is the capital of Liechtenstein, but not its largest city: Schaan is slightly larger. German language sources like to point out that it lacks Stadtrecht and is thus the only capital of a European state that is legally a village.

By public transit [ edit ]

47.139441 9.511092 1 Intercity bus stop Vaduz Rheinparkstadion . Flixbus stops here and has rides from Munich, Bregenz, Lindau, Milan, Lugano and Chur. From the bus stop it's a 10 min walk to the city centre of Vaduz. ( updated Apr 2024 )

Trains from Vienna, Zurich and Chur arrive at the 47.16837 9.478637 3 train station at Buchs (the main Swiss town on the Liechtenstein border). Buses run every 15 minutes from to Schaan and Vaduz. Tickets can be purchased on the bus for Fr. 3.40 and it only takes about 10 minutes to Schaan and another 5 to Vaduz.

If you're coming by rail from Switzerland, it may be quicker and cheaper to take the train as far as Sargans (rather than Buchs), from where it's possible to catch a bus (see below) straight to Vaduz. Consult the SBB timetable [dead link] to find out what'll be quickest when you're travelling. There are lockers at the Sargans station so you can leave your luggage there. This link provides a plan of the station showing the lockers and where to catch the bus from.

The Liechtenstein Buses number 12 service runs from Sargans railway station to Buchs railway station via central Vaduz and Schaan railway station. It leaves from outside each station approximately every 20 minutes. The buses are yellow-green in colour. A fare to Vaduz is Fr. 5.80 from Sargens and Fr. 3.40 from Buchs. Consider getting a whole network day pass (Fr. 12) or week pass (Fr. 24) if you are making many journeys on Liechtenstein Buses, though two single fares (e.g. from Sargens or Buchs to Vaduz and Vaduz onward to Feldkirch) cost less than a day pass.

From Feldkirch railway station in Austria , look for the distinctive off-yellow Liechtenstein Buses. Numbers 11 and 14 head straight to Vaduz and number 13 goes to Buchs railway station, by-passing Vaduz, so you'll have to change at the Schaan railway station interchange.

By car [ edit ]

You can also drive into the town - it's well signposted. There is plenty of parking.

On foot or bike [ edit ]

Get around [ edit ].

Map

Vaduz is very small and walking around the city and the areas around it will not take very long.

The municipal borders of Vaduz are a delight of European feudalism run amok, as it contains seven exclaves seemingly randomly spread across the national territory. This will have almost no practical importance for most visitors.

  • The Prince's Wine Collection ( a 5-minute walk from the central square ). Available to view by a vineyard on the northern edge of Vaduz. ( updated Jul 2018 )

A short walk towards the river will offer visitors the chance to experience some great views of the mountains surrounding the city. The old covered bridge which spans the Rhine river provides an interesting way to cross the border between Liechtenstein and Switzerland. The unpainted, weathered wooden bridge is rustic in appearance. It accommodates foot or bicycle traffic only, cars are prevented from approaching. Drivers may find it tricky to pull off. Cars on this road are headed to the Swiss Autobahn, a few hundred metres across the river directly west of the bridge. Please use care. These motorists may not tolerate the casual traveller on a busy road. There is no means to access the bridge from the west by car. The road that would appear to lead to the western end of the bridge is the aforementioned Swiss Autobahn.

From the centre of Vaduz follow Zollstrasse (towards the football stadium) until you reach the river. There are no border checks.

Buy [ edit ].

The main shops in Vaduz sell tourist trinkets all branded in Liechtensteinian and Swiss colours. There are plenty of flags, t-shirts and cuckoo clocks available. People who enjoy collecting passport stamps are able to get an official Liechtenstein Tourist Office stamp at the Tourist Information office. The cost was Fr. 3 in July 2018. This is unique as there are no border crossings at either of Liechtenstein's frontiers. Postage stamps and postcards can be bought at the post office opposite the tourist office as well as most other shops.

There is also a small retail village between Vaduz and Balzers. This is home to a McDonalds, and a sports clothes shop among other things.

Eat [ edit ]

The main square is behind the bus station in the middle of Vaduz. There are a number of cafes and restaurants offering hearty Liechtensteinian, Swiss, and Austrian fare at reasonable prices.

Budget [ edit ]

Liechtenstein isn't a cheap place to eat. More low-priced options are in Feldkirch just across the Austrian border. It's 15 km by car. The train departs from Schaan. And the more frequent city bus goes from Vaduz there.

Liechtenstein

What to see and do in vaduz, liechtenstein.

  • Author david
  • Date July 12th, 2016

Nestled along the Rhine River is the small town of Vaduz, the capital of Lichtenstein. The country is landlocked by Austria to the west and Switzerland to the south and east, and is approximately the size of Washington D.C. in terms of square miles.

Despite its size (it is about a half hour’s drive from one end of the country to the other,) Lichtenstein is one of the richest countries in the world and is considered a tax haven for businesses of all kinds. Before we jump into what to see and do in Vaduz, Liechtenstein, we need to learn some of its history.

Vaduz Castle_Liechtenstein_Davidsbeenhere

While the neighboring town of Schaan has a larger population, Vaduz is known for being the financial center of the country and is the seat of the Archdiocese of Vaduz. The town was first mentioned in 12 th century historical document under the name of Farduzes, but historians believe that the Counts of Werdenberg founded Vaduz in the 13 th century. In the early 14 th century, a castle is described as being built but was later sacked in the late 15 th century by the Swiss.

Cathedral of Saint Florin_Vaduz_Liechtenstein_Davidsbeenhere

In the 17 th century, the Liechtenstein family purchased the area, which consisted of the Herrschaft of Schellenberg and the countship of Vaduz. The family sought a seat in the Reichstag, a parliament like group conducted by the Roman Empire, whose seats were given only to landowners. Upon learning of the purchase, the Roman Emperor united the two parcels of land, dubbed them Liechtenstein, and made the territory a member of the Roman Empire. After the dissolution of the Roman Empire, the prince regained full control of the territory and the royal family remains the head of the country to this day. A limited constitution was instituted in the 19 th century creating a government underneath the royal family.

Liechtenstein_Davidsbeenhere2

The most prominent landmarks in Vaduz are the eponymous castle, which houses the royal family, and the Cathedral of St. Florin. Inside their towering shadows lie smaller, but equally popular attractions, such as the National Art Gallery, Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, and the Liechtenstein National Museum, which also attracts tourists.

Liechtenstein_Davidsbeenhere3

The best time to visit is during the milder summer as opposed to the harsh winters, but rain is a year-round fixture of the town. Despite being the capital of Liechtenstein, Vaduz does not have an airport or railway system. The only was to access the city is to fly into a neighboring city, such as Schaan, and take a bus over. Getting around Vaduz does not require long distance travel so I would suggest renting a bicycle or small motorcycle during your stay in the city. Renting one will run you between 15 and 35 Francs per day.

Liechtenstein Center

Liechtenstein Center_Vaduz_Davidsbeenhere

The Liechtenstein Center is the ultimate resource for exploring Liechtenstein. Located on the Städtle Street, this tourist office provides visitors with comprehensive information about the country itself, the hotels, the local art scene, yearly festivals, hiking trails, family events and much more. This center also contains a great souvenir shop, which sells stamps, books, candy tins, tea sets and hats. Directly adjacent to the center is a replica of the original kilometer zero stone. This stone marks the location from where all roads where measured, which occurred in Liechtenstein in 1864.

Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein

Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein_Vaduz_Davidsbeenhere

A sharp contrast to the bucolic meadows and alpine terrain of Vaduz, Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein is a highly modern state museum that houses international contemporary art and the national art collection of Liechtenstein. In 1967, the government of Liechtenstein received a gift of ten paintings, which resulted in the creation of the State Art Collection of Liechtenstein.

Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein_Vaduz_Davidsbeenhere2

The first curator, Dr. Georg Malin, soon added international modern and contemporary art to the collection. The current museum building was constructed through collaboration between a group of private donors, the government of Liechtenstein, and the city of Vaduz. In 2000, the building was gifted to the government of Liechtenstein and the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein officially opened to the public later that year.

tourism office vaduz

The current collection covers artwork from the 19 th century to the present, with a focus on installations and sculptures. In 2006, the museum acquired the collection of Rolf Ricke, which included art by Richard Serra, Fabian Marcaccio, and Jessica Stockholder. There are also special exhibitions that showcase from the personal collection of the Prince of Liechtenstein. The museum is closed on Mondays and admission runs from 8 to 12 CHF. Tours are available. After exploring the museum, stop by the in-house café and sushi bar for some fresh fish and relaxing drinks.

Vaduz Castle

Vaduz Castle_Liechtenstein_Davidsbeenhere2

Perched high above the city is Vaduz Castle , home of the royal family. The Counts of Werdenberg-Sargans are believed to have built the castle, which they later pledged to Ulrich von Matsch. The Chapel of Saint Anna was added during the High Middle Ages and the main altar was constructed in the late-gothic style. During the Swabain War of 1499, Swiss forces burned the castle to the ground. The round tower was added in the early to mid 16 th century and Count Kaspar von Hohenems expanded the western section in the early 17th century.

Liechtenstein_Davidsbeenhere4

The Liechtenstein family acquired the medieval fortress in the 17 th century, when they purchased the countship of Vaduz. The castle was originally used as seat for the imperial administrator but the crumbling fortress soon required renovations to remain standing. From 1905 to 1912, Prince Johann II extensively remodeled the castle and in 1938, Prince Franz Joseph II converted the castle to the official royal residence. The oldest section of the castle is the keep and the buildings on the eastern side, which date back to the 12 th century. Visitors are not allowed to enter the castle but there are wooded footpaths that lead up to a rock terrace. This is the terrace that offers the best and closest view of the castle.

Cathedral of Saint Florin

Cathedral of Saint Florin_Vaduz_Liechtenstein_Davidsbeenhere2

The Cathedral of Saint Florin, also known as the Vaduz Cathedral, is a neo-Gothic church that is seat of the Archdiocese of Vaduz. Located on Sankt Florinsgasse south of Stadtle Street, the church was built as a parish church by Friedrich von Schmidt in 1873 on top of the foundations of older, medieval buildings. During this time period, it housed the Liechtenstein Deanery and was a member of the Swiss Diocese of Chur. Pope John Paul II elevated the church to cathedral status in 1997. Its patron saint is 9 th century Florinus of Remus, a saint of the Vinschgau Valley and not to be confused with the popular French wine bearing the same name. Inside the Cathedral, visitors will find delicate stained glass windows, graceful chandeliers, and high-arching ceilings.

Stadtle Street

Stadtle Street_Vaduz_Liechtenstein_Davidsbeenhere

Lined with shops, restaurants, and other venues, Stadtle Street is the main and only pedestrian street in Vaduz. Take a stroll down this path to soak in the culture of Lichtenstein, which is a twist on the traditional values often seen in Germany, and the other bordering countries. Because of its small size, Lichtenstein has absorbed a lot of the ideas and standards of its neighbors. Art lovers will enjoy the plethora of statues found along the street, as well as the museums, which are all located along Stadtle Street.

Be sure to stop into Liechtenstein’s main post office, Postwert Zeichenstelle der Regierung, which is located on this lively street. The stamps sold at this office are considered treasures to international stamp collectors, and will make for excellent gifts for loved ones.

Malbun_Liechtenstein_Davidsbeenhere3

The only winter skiing destination in Liechtenstein , Malbun offers a sweeping range of snow-covered mountains that have been forgotten by the masses. Because of its small size, the settlement avoids many of the problems that plague more popular skiing locales – crowds, lines, and equipment problems. Malbun is located approximately 9 miles north of Vaduz.

Malbun_Liechtenstein_Davidsbeenhere

The easiest way to access this town is by road.   For drivers who are inexperienced with the mountain terrain or the lack the proper equipment, it is recommended that you take a bus from Vaduz. The [short] drive itself will take you through gorgeous, untamed countryside dotted with small villages. For those planning to stay overnight, there are four hotels in the area, Alpenhotel Malbun, Hotel Galina, Hotel Gorfion, or Hotel Turna. Sareiserjoch Apartments also available and offer more long-term residences. All of these options are within walking distance of the skiing area and the lifts.

Malbun_Liechtenstein_Davidsbeenhere4

The skiing itself is at an altitude of 1600 meters, and the snow conditions are usually pretty good. This terrain is not necessarily for hard-core skiing but for a more romantic stroll through the mountains.

Malbun_Liechtenstein_Davidsbeenhere5

There are three lifts, the Hochegg and Täli lifts on the right side of the valley, and the Sareis lift on the left side. The first two bring skiers to some intermediate runs, with the Hochegg lift also providing access to some more expert, wooded terrain. The Sareis lift offers the most panoramic view of the mountains and surrounding area. These runs are fairly easy and skiers can simply cruise back down to the village. Skiers looking for a more challenging experience can cross the border into Austria and visit either Lech or St. Anton, both of which are about 90 minutes away.

Additionally, you can explore the beautiful town of Krems , which you can easily do in a day or less.

tourism office vaduz

Liechtenstein is a little place, but you are in for a big surprise. Just over 60 square miles, this country is home to very educated and wealthy citizens- they are the second-richest German-speaking people in the world. Unlike other neighboring European countries, Liechtenstein is a constitutional absolute monarchy. However, the country uses Swiss Francs as currency, speaks German as a main language, and has a culture that is largely influenced by Austria, Bavaria, as well as Switzerland. Some historians believe that Liechtenstein’s neutrality during World War II was the country’s smartest move- and has allowed for it to continue flourishing.

The reason why this article contains no nightlife recommendations is because Vaduz is a place where guests tend to retire early after dinnertime. There is not much happening after dark, and sometimes that is just plain nice- to actually get a chance to relax while on vacation. The views around town are stunning, and ordering Fondue at any restaurant you visit is something you won’t regret. Speaking of food, Restaurant Torkel is phenomenal!

No matter what you choose to do during your trip to this mini city, I know you will gain a sense of what luxury is all about. I highly suggest stopping by the main post office for stamps. They make for great gifts and if you buy enough you can frame and hang them on your wall as great memories of your trip. The principalities of the royal family produce some incredible red and white wines. The winemaking history in the area dates back to the Celtic Tribes who inhabited these Alpine lands even before the Roman Empire took over. To make a story short- go ahead and splurge on some Chardonnay or Pinot Noir from the Prince of Liechtenstein’s vineyards. Drink them at your hotel or send a crate home…good wine is a terrible thing to waste.

Day Trip To Vaduz In Liechtenstein – 15 Best Things To Do

Day Trip To Vaduz In Liechtenstein - 15 Best Things To Do

While we were on holiday on  Lake Constance over the Easter break we decided to go on a Liechtenstein on a day trip to Vaduz. As the weather was changeable and we had no plans to ski we opted to visit the capital of Liechtenstein Vaduz. Finding very little information from people that have actually been to the city I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. Let’s put it this way. I am glad we did it ticking off another country from the very long list. Although I have no plans to visit the capital again.

Was it worth the effort? Well on a rainy day, I always think visiting a city is a good option so you can duck in and out of cafes and shops or points of interest. And there was just about enough to do in the center of Vaduz. So yes worth the effort. But surprisingly sparse all the same.

Table of Contents

The principality of Liechtenstein is landlocked and is one of the smallest countries in Europe. And 6th smallest in the world. Despite its small size, Liechtenstein boasts a thriving economy and a high standard of living. Which you can tell from all the designer shops in the city center. Vaduz, is home to the princely family’s castle, which overlooks the picturesque Rhine Valley. The country is also renowned for its impressive art collection housed in the Liechtenstein Museum.

Getting to Liechtenstein for a day trip to Vaduz

We drove from the Bodensee to the capital city of Liechtenstein Vaduz. From where we were staying in  UnterUhldingen  it took around an hour and a half to drive to Vaduz. On route, we went through both  Austria   and  Switzerland . To drive in both these countries you need to purchase a Vinette to avoid being fined. You can read more about how to do this in our  tips for holidaying in the Bodensee  article.

If you want to fly into Liechtenstein then the nearest airport is Zurich which is around an hour and fifteen minutes by car. You can also reach Vaduz by train. The closest train station to the capital is around 3.5km from the city centre, in the town of Schaan. If you are travelling from Zurich on public transportation there is no direct train. Instead, you need to catch a bus ride from Schaan. Depending on the route you take it will be approximately two hours.

Where to park in Vaduz on a day trip

We visited out-of-season on a rainy day in April. So we took our chances and headed into the city centre to find parking. Opting for Zentrum as it was an inside parking garage. Like car parks in the UK, they have digital signs which show you how many car spaces there are. Although once we were in the carpark it was a little confusing. Since a lot of the spaces had reserved signs. The only spaces we could find were a maximum three-hour stays. Unlike the UK where you pay on exit, here you pay before you leave the carpark on foot to sightsee. We paid with Swiss Francs but you could use a card or euros. The machine can operate in English.

By the time we left the central car parks were full. However, there is a large car park on the outskirts of the city. Here we noticed you could also park camper vans. I would anticipate it’s probably only a fifteen-minute walk into the centre from here.

Things to do in Vaduz with Kids

One thing I really struggled to find information on is what you could actually do in Vaduz. And it turns out the reason I was struggling was perhaps because there is not that much! Surprising for the richest country in the world per capita. You can spot this as soon as you walk along the pedestrian shopping street. Which is lined on both sides by jewellery stores and designer shops. However, we did find more than enough to do in our three-hour visit.

The best thing to do in Vaduz – City Train

This is probably the thing to do when visiting Vaduz in Liechtenstein on a day trip with kids. The little city train takes you around the city centre and the old part of Vaduz. It goes past the Red House which is one of the best-known landmarks in the city. With the opportunity to get out and take photos. The train ride is the best way to learn about the small town and the history of the royal family.

There is an audio-guided tour available throughout with local music. Available in lots of different languages. When we visited the train was only operating twice a day. At 1 pm and 4.30 pm. On the website, you can make a booking online. But we ended up buying a train ticket from the ticket office. A family ticket costs 28 CHF. The tour takes around half hour and also includes a drive past the Prince of Liechtenstein Winery. It is a good first stop to try and get your bearings.

The Four Museums

There are also a series of small museums perfect for a day trip to Vaduz. We only went to one which was the Treasure Chamber to see the Faberge egg. Although it is possible to buy a pass for all four which costs 13 CHF for adults with children under 16 being free. The museums are:

  • Liechtenstein National Museum  – Showcases the cultural and historical heritage of the Principality of Liechtenstein. The museum’s exhibits cover a wide range of topics, including archaeology, history, and the development of the country. Visitors can explore artefacts, documents, and displays that provide insight into Liechtenstein’s past and its cultural identity.
  • Liechtenstein Art Museum   (Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein) – Renowned for its impressive collection of modern and contemporary art. It features works by prominent artists, both from Liechtenstein and internationally.
  • Postal Museum   – A fascinating journey through the history of postage and communication at the post museum. Visitors can explore a wide array of philatelic items, including stamps, postcards, and postal equipment. The museum provides insights into the evolution of the postal service and its significance in shaping global connections.
  • Treasure Chamber of the Principality of Liechtenstein  – A unique museum that showcases the rich cultural heritage and historical artefacts of the principality. It houses a remarkable collection of treasures, including precious objects and items of significant cultural value. The museum offers visitors a captivating glimpse into the princely family’s heritage and the history of Liechtenstein.

Tourist Information Center & Liechtenstein Passport Stamp

The tourist office is also on the main shopping street. Here you can pay 3€ each to get your passport stamped with a souvenir stamp. There is also a photo opportunity with a crown and throne. Which the boys really enjoyed posing for. Plus various gifts to purchase from the souvenir shop. There are several information leaflets and free maps which give you more details about the area. A useful place to stop if you are planning on visiting other parts of the country. And take part in the  Liechtenstein Trail.

Wander through the town centre

As well as the museums and tourist office as you wander through the centre you will come across the Parliament Building. Which is the official seat of the country’s legislative body, known as the Landtag. Although the exterior of the building may not showcase intricate historical architecture, its true importance lies in its function as a vital centre for legislative decision-making. And the embodiment of the people’s voice through their elected representatives.

The other point of interest is the town hall and outside it the Tre Cavalli by Nag Arnoldi statue. The artist, born in 1928, is one of Switzerland’s most important sculptors.

Try out a selection of sweet and savoury treats

There are several places to eat in the centre. Some looked very posh indeed. We found a very sweet cafe selling all sorts of baked goods, pretzels, cakes and little open sandwiches which reminded me of when we visited Denmark. Wander a little further and you will also come across a very lovely chocolate shop which the boys could not resist spending their pocket money.

Wine Tasting

Wine is big business in Liechtenstein. You will see and learn about the vines on the city train tour. The vines are owned by the royal family and they produce local wine. This is sold in the tourist shop on the high street but also at the vineyard.

At the winery is possible to try the local wine and learn about how it is made at  The Prince of Liechtenstein Winery in Vaduz. Home to the Herawingert vineyards. With its four hectares of southwest-facing slopes and mild climate influenced by the warm ‘Föhn’ wind. Herawingert is among the best wine-growing regions in the Rhine Valley. Its excellent quality of soil offers ideal conditions for growing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The boys were not thrilled with this idea so we ended up buying a bottle of wine and red to try at a later date. Expect to pay between 20-25€ a bottle.

Views from Vaduz Castle

Schloss Vaduz  is the official residence of the prince of Liechtenstein. It is still occupied and lived in by the Royal family and as such it is not possible to go inside. However, you can visit the wine cellar in the castle grounds. And also park close by to take photos and look at the beautiful views. When we visited the castle was undergoing some extensive restoration work so the closest car park to the castle was shut. However, if you follow the road up the hill you will find more parking on the left-hand side. It is worth visiting to see the natural beauty of the

Day Trip To Vaduz In Liechtenstein - 15 Best Things To Do

Visit Alte Rheinbrücke

We did not do this as the weather was too wet but if you fancy a short walk then you can visit Alte Rheinbrücke. Which is an old wooden bridge built around 1871 that crosses the Rhine River. It is around a twenty-minute walk from the main square with views of the Swiss Alps. Completely undercover you can cross over the Liechtenstein border into Switzerland at the halfway point. The perfect activity for a day trip to Vaduz.

Gutenberg Castle

Okay, so this is technically not in Vaduz. But if you have a car then it is only a fifteen-minute drive. Gutenberg Castle, is a historic landmark located in Balzers. Perched atop a hill overlooking the Rhine Valley, the castle boasts a rich history dating back to the High Middle Ages. It is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in the region and offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into the past. Unlike Vaduz Castle it is not inhabited and so open to the public

How long do you need?

We spent around three and half hours in the capital which included driving up to the castle. We may have stayed slightly longer had our carpark not been limited to three hours. As we only visited one museum, we probably would have visited the other ones too. Since they are all quite small and only a short walk from each other out so keeps the kid’s attention. If you plan to park in one of the car parks on the outskirts and also visit the wine tasting at The Prince of Liechtenstein Winery. Then I would allow five hours to really see it all.

Tips for a day trip to Vaduz

  • Liechtenstein is very close to its neighbour Switzerland and so takes both the Swiss Franc and Euros.
  • Depending on how you get there then you may need both a Swiss and Austrian Vinnette.
  • Take snacks and water as prices are very similar to Switzerland. Liechtenstein is the wealthiest country in the world per capita. Prices and the designer shops reflect this.
  • There’s not a huge amount to Vaduz. It feels like a bit of a nothing place. Despite being a capital city. It makes a good pitstop for exploring the country further. The tourism office will be able to help you with this.
  • English is more widely spoken here than on the Bodensee.
  • Combine a visit with a holiday on Lake Constance in the Summer months as unless you have plans to specifically tour the area a few hours is enough.
  • To make sure you see everything pick up a town map from the information centre.

Have you visited Vaduz in Liechtenstein? I would love to hear about your experiences in the comments below. Did we miss anything in Liechtenstein’s capital?

7 Vaduz spots to visit on a Liechtenstein day trip

author_avatar

Recently updated on October 6th, 2022 at 02:34 pm

For the perfect Europe day trip, look no further than the little Liechtenstein capital of Vaduz. Visit the 6th-smallest country in the world and escape the well-worn tourist path as you explore a range of Vaduz attractions. We’ve scoured the lovely Liechtenstein countryside to find the top Vaduz sightseeing options.

1.  Vaduz Castle

Schloss Castle

It’s hard to miss Schloss Vaduz . Perched on a hillside overlooking Liechtenstein’s capital, this 700-year-old castle is a tale of towers and turrets, knights and legends. Built as a fortress in the 12 th century, it is now the official residence of the Prince of Liechtenstein.

As a result, the castle is closed to visitors. However, walking tours of Vaduz give interesting insights into the history of the castle and a walk to the gates delivers beautiful views of its Alpine backdrop and surrounding countryside.

Those who are lucky enough to visit Vaduz in late summer might just find themselves inside the castle grounds.  Each year, on the 15 th of August – Liechtenstein’s National Day – the Prince opens his home for a public reception and a magnificent fireworks display.

  2. The Cathedral of St. Florin

st.florin cathedral vaduz

Designed by Austrian architect Friederich von Schmidt in the 1870s, this Roman Catholic, neo-Gothic cathedral is best known for its stained glass windows and stunning steeple. One of the most popular Vaduz sightseeing attractions, visitors can also look for the graves of Prince Franz Joseph II, the father of the present ruling Prince, and his wife, Countess Georgina von Wilczek. The cathedral is a beautiful, quiet and contemplative space and a special stop on any Vaduz sightseeing tour.

3. Old Rhine Bridge

old rhine bridge liechtenstein

The rustic, wooden Alte Rheinbrücke crosses the Rhine River to link Lichtenstein and Switzerland. A 135-metre walk gets you across the bridge, and you’ll love the opportunity to stop halfway, planting one foot in Switzerland and the other in Liechtenstein!

Be sure to have a camera at hand, because the walk from the bridge back into Vaduz presents postcard-perfect views of Vaduz Castle and St. Florin Cathedral – iconic images of Liechtenstein.

4. Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein

Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein Vaduz attractions

This black, monolithic block houses the State Art Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art. Its collection of 19 th -century pieces, including sculptures and artwork from the Prince’s private collection, make it one of the most captivating Vaduz sightseeing attractions.

From the imposing exterior (which has river pebbles from the Rhine River Valley embedded in its façade) to the sleek, clean lines of the interior space, the museum is a beautiful canvas celebrating a carefully curated collection of art.

5. The Red House – Mitteldorf

The red house

To get a true sense of how Vaduz once looked, wander around the old neighbourhood of Mitteldorf – just northeast of the town centre.  You’ll discover a huddle of traditional houses, flower boxes and cobblestone streets.

Particularly eye-catching and instantly recognisable is Mitteldorf’s 14 th century Rotes Haus .  With its deep red hue, pretty stone tower and attached vineyard, Red House is a must on your Vaduz sightseeing tour.

Unfortunately you can’t go inside the house (it’s been owned by the same family since 1807), but it’s a wonderful photo opportunity and an enduring memory of your time in this little country.

6 . Parliament Building

liechtenstein Parliament House Vaduz attractions

Another striking building in Vaduz is the Principality’s Parliament Building. Designed by Munich-based architect Hansjörg Göritz, it is situated on the main square. Little known fact? It was built using more than a million bricks! The building has housed Liechtenstein’s parliament, various government offices and the state archives since 2008.

7 . Gutenberg Castle

Gutenberg Castle

Although not strictly in Vaduz, we’re including Burg Gutenberg as a must-see Vaduz attraction, as it is located just south of the capital, in Balzers. This castle, with its astonishing setting, is a sight to behold.

Dating back to the Bronze Age, the castle houses a museum, two chapels and a beautiful rose garden. Happily, Gutenberg Castle is not a royal residence, so it is open to the general public.

In addition, the castle’s inner courtyard hosts cultural presentations, theatre productions and concerts during the summer months, a wonderful way to get a deeper understanding of life in Liechtenstein.

More reasons to visit Vaduz

Landscape of Vaduz attractions

Need another excuse to visit Vaduz? Liechtenstein’s 17,3 km² capital has a few more secrets tucked up its sleeve:

  • Vaduz’s Postage Stamp Museum will delight philatelists and historians alike.
  • Spend some time in the main square, taking in the city’s ‘government quarter’, admiring the mountain views or hunting down a plate of Käsknöpfle , Liechtenstein’s national dish. This traditional cheese pasta is served with apple sauce and crispy onions – a surprisingly delicious combination.
  • Vaduz’s miniature CityTrain is a fun way to explore the town and popular with kids of all ages.
  • The Hofkellerei or Royal Winery is essentially the personal wine cellar of the Prince of Liechtenstein.  Visitors can take a walk through the vineyards, learn a little more about winemaking in the Rhine Valley and sample some of the estate’s celebrated Pinot Noir or Chardonnay. Prost!

Finally, don’t forget to get your passport stamped at Vaduz’s tourist office. Although there are no guards or immigration officials at the border, you’ll want Fürstentum Liechtenstein (Principality of Liechtenstein) stamped in your passport. The tourist office is happy to oblige.

I will be visiting Liechtenstein on an afternoon, my guess on arrival time is between 2pm and 3pm. I am wondering what are the hours for Vaduz's tourist office. I want to get my passport stamped there.

How far is the tourist office from Kunstmuseum? Also, how much is parking at the Kunstmuseum or is it free?

' class=

Vaduz is tiny, to say the least. So walking distance is not an issue! And there is a parking available (not sure about the price). The tourist office is open daily from 9.00 a.m. until 5.00 p.m. This website is very comprehensive and includes a contact box if you have a specific question (such as parking price :-)):

Why should you visit Liechtenstein?

Liechtenstein is one of the smallest countries in the world. There are only 38,000 citizens, and 5,000 of them live in the capital – Vaduz . The country border is around 70 km in total! In our opinion, the main attractions of the country can be seen in one day . However, if you spend your vacation in Austria or Switzerland, it is definitely worth visiting Liechtenstein for a short trip.

Top things to do in Liechtenstein

Print a postage stamp with your photo

what to do in Liechtenstein

Does anyone else, besides us, still send traditional letters or postcards? If you are looking for a unique souvenir, print a set of stamps with your photo at the Liechtenstein Center . These stamps are officially recognized, so you can stick them on your postcard and send it to the world. However, this souvenir is pretty expensive – the basic set of 12 stamps cost 27 CHF .

Colorful postage stamps are one of the most-bought souvenirs. The country of Liechtenstein issued the first series of its stamps in 1912, and it was almost entirely bought by collectors. For years, the sale of postage stamps was an important source of state revenue. A few steps from the tourist center is the free Postal Museum. Even if you are not a fan of philately, it is worth to come here for 15 minutes, see the exhibits and learn more about the history of Liechtenstein’s postal service.

Visit the Vaduz Castle

Vaduz castle

Vaduz Castle is one of the most recognizable castles in Liechtenstein . It is a beautiful, medieval fortification that will take you back in time. It was built in the 16th century, and currently, it is an official residence of the Prince of Liechtenstein. Unfortunately, the inside of the castle is closed to visitors and is only open for special occasions. Tourists can see a part of the tower, castle walls, part of the bridge and the gate. Still, we think it’s worth going uphill, sitting on one of the benches and enjoying the beautiful view.

Walk the main street of the capital city of Liechtenstein, where modern architecture and contemporary sculptures mix with the beautiful view of the castle rising on the hill. The tiny Main Square is proportional to the size of Liechtenstein and it is located at the end of the main street Stadtle, which is full of shops of various types, restaurants, and cafés. While walking on the Stadtle street , don’t miss the charming Landtag building , which is the house of Liechtenstein’s parliament. Karissa hand, press secretary.

Boston — Today, the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism (MOTT) hosted the 2024 Governor’s Conference, a full-day gathering to discuss the latest topics impacting travel and tourism in Massachusetts. The Healey-Driscoll Administration outlined this event as an objective in the 2023 economic development plan, Team Massachusetts: Leading Future Generations. This is the first time the conference has been held in Massachusetts in a decade.

During the event, Governor Healey and Lieutenant Governor Driscoll provided keynote speeches. The conference also included dynamic panels with industry leaders, a presentation of Massachusetts tourism awards, and the new brand reveal for Massachusetts 250, the administration’s marketing plan to commemorate the 250 th anniversary of the American Revolution. The Massachusetts 250 website and social media channels launched today in conjunction with the brand announcement.

"Massachusetts has so much to offer with its natural beauty and outdoor activities, history, world-class arts and culture, sports teams, and a diversity of food and communities. Our tourism industry is one of our greatest assets. That’s why we’re thrilled to relaunch the Governor’s Conference on Travel and Tourism after a decade,” said Governor Maura Healey . “Together, we can further grow our tourism industry by passing our administration’s Mass Leads Act, which dedicates $100 million to our tourism economy – with arts, culture, and the creative economy at the center of the strategy.”

“From the Boston Tea Party, to Lexington and Concord, to Dorchester Heights and beyond – critical engagements of the American Revolution happened right here in Massachusetts. Over the next three years, we’ll be commemorating the history that is the core of the Massachusetts story by celebrating the wins and reflecting on lessons learned,” said Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll . “We’re excited to unveil the Massachusetts 250 logo, website and social media today and we encourage Massachusetts residents to check them out to keep informed all of the events coming up that they won’t want to miss.”

"The travel and tourism industry provides a wide range of employment opportunities, from seasonal jobs to fulfilling lifelong careers, enriching our workforce. It positions Massachusetts on the global stage, attracting diverse visitors from around the globe to experience the beauty of Massachusetts throughout the year,” said Secretary of Economic Development Yvonne Hao. “We’re excited to host the 2024 Governor’s Conference on Travel and Tourism, inviting experts to showcase our state’s talents and collaborate on areas of improvement – together, working towards making Massachusetts a global leader in tourism and culture.”

“We are delighted to bring the Governor’s Conference on Travel & Tourism back to Massachusetts,” said MOTT Executive Director Kate Fox. “Our tourism industry is significant, generating $24.2 billion in visitor spending, $1.9 billion in state and local tax revenue, and employing more than 130,000 people across the state. The conference provides a valuable opportunity for learning, networking, and professional development and we look forward to making it an annual convening that will strengthen the Massachusetts tourism industry.”

The tourism industry employs approximately 130,000 residents and contributes more than $24 billion to the state’s economy. As part of Governor Healey’s new “Mass Leads Act,” the administration commits more than $100 million in capital authorization to growing the state’s tourism economy with an understanding that arts, culture, and the creative economy are part of the solution.

“Travel and tourism is an essential part of our statewide and local economies. Massachusetts has so much to offer the domestic and international visitor. Historic commemorations, literature, arts and cultural organizations, food and farms, our beautiful outdoors with beautiful trails and recreational opportunities, sporting events, scientific and environmental innovation, and more. We have it all,” said State Representative Mindy Domb, Chair of the Joint Committee on Tourism, Arts and Cultural Development . “By bringing our travel and tourism partners together, the Governor’s Conference highlights the depth of the sector’s economic impact, features the variety of experiences available in the commonwealth, and promotes the collaboration that fuels the sector’s growth.”

As part of the Conference, Governor Healey presented four tourism awards on behalf of the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism, recognizing achievement and contributions to the Massachusetts tourism industry.

The Larry D. Meehan Lifetime Achievement Award   Presented to Patti Lloyd, Senior Vice President of Sales at the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce, for her 24 years of promotion of Cape Cod, The Islands, and Massachusetts. As a member of the Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau, Larry Meehan had a remarkable 30-year career in the tourism industry. This award, presented by the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism, is bestowed upon one individual who has made a unique contribution to the growth and vitality of the Massachusetts tourism industry.

The Revolutionary Achievement Award   Presented to Jonathan Lane, Executive Director of Revolution 250, Inc, for his innovative approach to embracing all things commemorating the 250 th Anniversary of the American Revolution. This newly established award will annually recognize an individual who has contributed to the Massachusetts tourism industry in a “revolutionary” way.

The Film Industry Achievement Award   Presented to Charlie Harrington, a location manager who has made outstanding contributions to the Massachusetts film industry over the past 40 years.

The Award of Appreciation   Presented to Tony D’Agostino, who is retiring as MOTT’s Director of Research, for his outstanding commitment to the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism, Regional Tourism Councils, and the Massachusetts tourism industry.

The 2024 Governor Conference sets a new precedent bringing the conference back annually and will expand on efforts to position Massachusetts as a top travel destination.
