Home is a special edition song released exclusively on October 21, 2015, as part of the Perfect EP. While written and produced during the sessions for Made in the A.M. , "Home" does not appear on the album's official tracklist. However, it later included as a bonus track in Japanese version.

Lyrically, "Home" is about unexpectedly finding love with a person, after trying to make a failed relationship with someone else work.

The song has sparked intense fan speculation as to why it was released secretly, why Louis appeared to know the song was going to leak (as the tweets mentioned below were posted just after fans discovered the song on Spotify, and well before any official announcements), and why the lyrics switch from the gender pronoun "she" to a more non-specific "you". Many interpret the song as LGBT-friendly. One Direction have never publicly spoken about the song's meaning.

In 2016, "Home" won the fan voted Teen Choice Award for Choice Music Single: Group, despite not being a single.

Background [ ]

Home was written by Louis and Liam along with Jamie Scott , in April 2015 [1] . Louis confirmed this by favoriting a tweet from a fan asking if a picture taken of him writing with Liam and Jamie in April was the day Home was written. Jamie Scott also confirmed he co-wrote on the track on October 21, 2015. [2]

Liam told People Magazine the song is one of the most meaningful to him because of the way Louis wrote it. "Having seen different things he's gone through and different stuff this year – and obviously I've written a lot of songs with him – he can really get into that sensitive mindset to write songs, which is pretty cool" [3]

[Liam] Make a little conversation So long I've been waiting To let go of myself and feel alive [Niall] So many nights I thought it over Told myself I kind of liked her But there was something missing in her eyes [Harry] I was stumbling, looking in the dark (Ohho) With an empty heart But you say you feel the same Could we ever be enough? (Ohho) Baby we could be enough [All] And it's alright Calling out for somebody to hold tonight When you're lost, I'll find the way I'll be your light You'll never feel like you're alone [Louis] I'll make this feel like home [Niall] So hot that I couldn't take it Want to wake up and see your face And remember how good it was being here last night [Louis] Still high with a little feeling I see the smile as it starts to creep in It was there, I saw it in your eyes [Harry] I was stumbling, looking in the dark (Ohho) With an empty heart But you say you feel the same Could we ever be enough? (Ohho) Baby we could be enough [All] And it's alright Calling out for somebody to hold tonight When you're lost, I'll find the way I'll be your light You'll never feel like you're alone [Louis] I'll make this feel like home I'll make this feel like home [Harry] Baby we could be enough [All] It's alright Calling out for somebody to hold tonight When you're lost, I'll find the way I'll be your light You'll never feel like you're alone [Louis] I'll make this feel like home

Release [ ]

"Home" was released as part of the Perfect EP - a special digital release coinciding with the premiere of the " Perfect " music video. Fans in various countries began to notice the EP was available on Spotify in the early hours of October 21, 2015 (UK time). Shortly after word spread, Louis tweeted the lyric "I'll make this feel like homeeeee" [4] followed by an emoji of a house [5] . As October 21 progressed, the Perfect EP gradually became available on Spotify and iTunes worldwide. "Home" reached top 5 on numerous iTunes charts around the world, and reached #1 in 4 countries.

As of November 4, 2015, "Home" peaked at #74 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Project Home [ ]

On April 23, 2016, fans began a month's worth of online promotion for "Home", focusing on a certain aspect of the song each day. Both Liam Payne and Louis's mother Jay showed early support for the project, liking Instagram posts about it. More information can be found here: Project Home Official Tumblr . The project was a success, with Louis, Niall and Liam all thanking fans for their efforts on Twitter. Due to the amount of tweets and requests, many radio stations worldwide aired the song and some added it to their current playlists. On May 5, 2016, the song was added to One Direction's official Spotify playlist.

Song Released: 2015

Home lyrics, 1 top rated.

This song, to me, is clearly about struggling with your sexuality and finding someone to rely on through all of this. The first verse uses female pronouns, and talks about trying to fit in, to tell yourself you like "her", but it never feels right, you don't feel alive. After this, the song is gender neutral, and talks about finding someone but wondering if you two are enough. A later verse answers the first part about something missing in "her" eyes, saying "I see the smile as it starts to creep in/It was there, I saw it in your eyes". It's a beautiful song.

Louis is an incredible lyricist and this song is a beautiful example of this. Well, this is about freedom to love. The narrator makes it clear in the first stanza: "so long I've been waiting To let go of myself and feel alive " Here it tells us that the person hid his feelings for a long time, especially for himself. Loving makes him alive, soon he does not feel truly happy and full hiding it. "Told myself I kind of liked her But there was something missing in her eyes " In the same stanza he confesses that he tried to fall in love with someone else - in the "she" case - but could not because he was not genuine. The use of the pronouns in this song are primordial, because this resource tells us the story. I was stumbling, looking in the dark With an empty heart But you say the same Could we ever be enough? Baby we could be enough " This whole point becomes too personal, the narrator is no longer talking to a third person, but directly to someone. Here we see a romantic promise, that everything will be all right, for both are enough for each other. Despite the difficulties, they will continue fighting. Well, love is forbidden. You only make promises of this kind if something or someone hinders you. And it's alright Calling out for somebody to hold tonight When you're lost, you'll find a way I will be your light You'll never feel like you're alone I'll make this feel like home " Then the chorus, the narrator changes to neutral pronouns and continues to use the game of driving in the third person vs. talking directly to someone else. He says "and its alright" as a consolation and also as something to be strong. I feel that the first few verses are a message to the listener. (I know louis, you can love anyone you want.) Then comes the great phrase of effect of the song: "I'll make this feel like home." Home is a metaphor, the person you love is your home and your destination. He will always come back to the person and feel welcomed. This metaphor fits perfectly in the context of the story, for usually your home is the one you feel most secure and no matter how hard you try to live elsewhere, "your home" will always be the primary choice. So hot i could not take it I want to wake up and see your face And remember how good it was last night Still with a little feeling I see the smile as it starts to creep in It was there, I saw it in your eyes " Ok, this is totally WOW Because as I said, the pronouns that tell all the great thing happens. This stanza the narrator is finally in the arms of whom he loves, but since it is a forbidden love, he regrets not being able to have so much space and time to love him in the way that he so much wants. (It breaks my heart, actually) But it ends with an answer to the first stanza of the song saying "it was there, I saw it in your eyes" He uses "you", is not "her" and yes, another person. Him maybe? Can be. The fact is that the narrator gave himself to the one he really loves, even with all the barriers preventing him. I know the rumors about Louis and definitely this song is a letter to fans and a promise to whom he loves, in this case, Harry. Louis wanted to demonstrate in the best way that he knows his anguish in loving and not being able to express this love freely: in music. If your fans did not understand, I'm sorry, but it's so obviuos. Ps: sorry my bad grammar, english is not my mother tongue :(

What I believe Louis is trying to say in this song is that after being with that he didn’t actually like, he found another person that he could connect and love. Someone he could make feel like home. In the verse “told myself I kinda liked her, but there was something missing in her eyes”, I believe he is literally talking about a girl he was with. Louis is describing a girl that he made himself like, but he didn’t see any future with: in this case, Elouner. Eventually he found another person that made him feel, a person he could connect with(now using neutral pronouns), and he now thinks that maybe that person is the one: in this case, Harry. Louis wants to give his all to this person. He wants to make them safe and accompanied, like you would feel in a...ahem...HOME.❤️

I see it as finally finding someone who feels the struggle that you do with love and you just hope that love between you will be enough to overshadow any challenges. Maybe this person isn’t the one you or your family/friends had in mind for you and you tried to like someone else, hence why it said ‘told myself I kinda like her.’

Maybe it could be about someone who just got dumped?

This song is probably one of the best ever written by Louis. It expresses so much emotion and tells such a clear story. Tbh I can’t think of what else home could be about other than Larry...

this song is the Larry anthem, Louis wrote this and got emotional. The song sounds like a phone conversation between Harry and Louis with Harry saying "could we ever be enough, baby we could be enough" and at the end Louis says "ill make this feel like home". Also key part with the song starting with a she "Told myself I kind of liked her But there was something missing in her eyes" then it switches to gender neutral when Louis sings "I see the smile as it starts to creep in It was there, I saw it in your eyes."

To me this song is about wanting to be alive and trying to find someone you're easily connected to when Niall sings the verse "told myself I kinda liked her but there was something missing in her eyes" it's talking 'bout how we all seen that one person we can't get off our minds. Then in comes the pre chorus saying "I was stumbling looking in the dark with an empty heart" the focous person doesn't have to see the core in someone's eyes just to be there home. Second verse talks about longing "wanna wake up and see your face and remember how good it was being here last night" Louis follows up by saying "I see that smile that starts to creep in, it was there I saw it in your eyes" something that wasn't found in 'her' eyes is there now the song ends clear and strong by giving a repeated message "I'LL MAKE THIS FEEL LIKE HOME". Hoped I helped

This song is about not being ashamed to need someone to hold. Its about beibg in love, but not everyone aproves maybe, but at the end of te day the person you love is your home. Also this song screams larry

One Direction Members: Where Are They Now?

From global boy band superstars in 2010, to their solo successes today, we can’t get enough of these talented singers!

Share this:

One Direction

The One Direction members, who are known for hits like “Best Song Ever,” ultimately became one of the best-selling boy bands in history. It all started back in 2010, when the band formed — with the help of Simon Cowell — during the reality show “The X Factor UK.”

This British-Irish group immediately shot to super stardom. They created fan frenzies reminiscent of The Beatles . The group that reminded female fans “You Don’t Know You’re Beautiful” put out five albums in 6 years while crisscrossing the globe on world tours. Their first four albums debuted at #1 on the US Billboard 200 chart , making history and cementing the band’s musical legacy.

One Direction sitting in all black

Then One Direction announced they were officially going on hiatus in 2016. And while fans held their breath, the bandmates each went out on their own. They launched solo careers, took on acting roles, became entrepreneurs and started families.

It was a time we didn’t think Harry Styles could get any more famous. Now those five talented teens are all in their 30s. (Sing with me: “ Does it ever drive you crazy just how fast the night changes?” ) If you’re curious where your favorite 1D boys are now, you’ve come to the right place. Keep reading to see your favorite One Direction members, then and now…

Zayn malik, 31 one direction members.

Zayn Malik; one direction band members

Considered by many fans as the member of the band with the most powerful vocal range, Zayn Malik was also the one who broke our hearts by quitting the band early in 2015. But he left us with lots of memorable moments. Like hitting that high note in the solo for “You & I,” getting a plate of spaghetti dumped on his head in the music video for “Night Changes,” or bleaching a strip of his dark hair blonde.

So what has ZAYN been up to since leaving the band? He was the first solo member of One Direction to reach 1 billion streams on Spotify , all without touring. That popularity was driven by solo hits like “Pillow Talk.” And the song “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever,” a collab with Taylor Swift for the film 50 Shades Darker in 2017. (That duet also nabbed him an MTV Video Music Award.) Zayn is considered the only artist to have nabbed the Billboard Music Award in the category of New Artist of the Year twice!

Away from music, Zayn became a father in 2020 to baby girl Khai with former partner, model Gigi Hadid .

Liam Payne, 30

Liam Payne; one direction band members

When the group started, Liam Payne stepped out as an unofficial leader. Since he’d been on the “X Factor” the year before, he was considered an early front runner in the competition. Liam sang the first verse on many of One Direction’s early songs since he didn’t suffer from stage fright.

Fans cheered whenever this band member sang about “five-foot somethin’ with the skinny jeans.” Or confidently flipped his red microphone in the air, one of his trademark dance moves.

Since the band went on hiatus, this 1D alum has experimented with different genres of music including R&B. His song “Strip That Down” is his biggest solo hit to date. Liam also became a father to son Bear in 2017. And he appeared as a guest judge on an episode of “The X Factor UK” in 2018.

Niall Horan, 30, One Direction Members

Niall Horan; one direction band members

Niall Horan is one-of-a-kind. This singer and guitarist is the only member of One Direction who consistently played an instrument in the band. This Irishman is also the only non-English member of the group. And the only bandmate who doesn’t have any tattoos (as far as we know.)

Niall’s fun-loving personality is one reason many fans—called Directioners—adored the band. We can still hear him rocking, “You and me and all our friends. I don’t care how much we spend. This is what the night is foooorrrrrr.”

Niall Horan playing guitar

Since the band members went their separate ways, Niall has launched a successful solo career. He has three #1 solo albums. His hits including “Slow Hands” and “Nice to Meet Ya.” He also joined the cast of the show “The Voice” as a coach, winning his first and second season. But Niall isn’t all music. He has become a savvy businessman, having his hands in several ventures including Modest! Golf , a sports management company. This Irishman loves golf!

Louis Tomlinson, 32

Louis Tomlinson; one direction band members

The One Direction member with the most song-writing credits, Louis Tomlinson is considered the group’s master lyricist. (He wrote fan favorite “No Control,” among others.) His antics and on-stage pranks, whether spraying water or making funny faces, always kept fans engaged. Louis is also the oldest member of One Direction.

In fact, when the band formed, he was the only member with a driver’s license. So you can catch him in many of 1D’s music videos driving vehicles. (Some with more success than others.) Plus, he put the blue-collar town of Doncaster on the map. Louis is rumored to have been the member of the band most resistant to taking a hiatus. But as the tattoo across his chest says, “It Is What It Is.”

Louis Tomlinson singing

Since the band’s break, Louis has been faced with personal tragedy. He lost his mom to leukemia, as well as the unexpected death of his sister. Despite all that, Louis put out two solo albums, “Walls” and “Faith in The Future,” one which hit #1 in the UK.

He also launched a world tour, which was massively successful, especially in South America, where Louis is beloved. During the pandemic, Louis also broke the Guinness World Record for the most livestreamed concert by a male solo artist. As the oldest in a big family, Louis also has a knack for mentoring.

He participated as a judge for the 2018 season of “The X Factor UK,” which he won. And he dabbles in talent management. At home, he is father to son Freddie.

Harry Styles, 30, One Direction Members

Harry Styles

Last but not least… Harry Styles was a fan favorite back during the days of One Direction,  adored for his brown curls and green eyes. And his memorable fashion sense. (Can you picture the red floral Gucci suit ?!)

But since then, Harry’s star has risen even farther. He’s put out three solo albums and launched two world tours. His last two albums “Fine Line” and “Harry’s House” won a combined three Grammy Awards. That’s an elusive prize that he never won even with his success with One Direction.

These days, his solo songs like “Watermelon Sugar” and “As It Was” are on repeat on the radio. And let’s not forget that Taylor Swift’s wildly successful Eras Tour devotes time to her album 1989. That’s the album rumored to be written about Harry. ( “We never go out of Style.” )

Harry Styles performing; one direction band members

In addition to singing, Harry also caught the acting bug. His debut role was starring in Academy-Award-nominated film Dunkirk . He’s also been in two independent films and is hinted to star in the upcoming The Eternals sequel.

Since Harry’s days with 1D, he has continued to show off his unique fashion sense. He often wears sequins and feather boas on stage. He was even a cohost for The Met Gala in 2019. Plus, Harry launched a line of nail polish, called Pleasing. And he preaches love and respect to fans with his TPWK (Treat People With Kindness) anti-bullying platform.

What could be next for the members of One Direction?

So, that’s what the bandmates have been up to in recent years. One thing is for sure, as the band said in their last song together, “you and me gotta whole lot of history.”

But what’s next? Devoted fans still continue to hope for a reunion in the future. (Maybe 2050 in the Las Vegas Sphere?) But until then, we’ll leave you with a lyric from “Walking in the Wind” … “But it’s  not the end , I’ll see your face again.”

One Direction Reveal ‘Take Me Home’ Artwork + Release Date

The boys of One Direction goof around on a British telephone booth for the just-released cover photo of their second album, ' Take Me Home .'

Poor Niall Horan is trying to make a simple call inside the phone booth — though he appears to be using his cell phone, oddly enough — while his bandmates do their best to distract him.

Somehow, Liam Payne ends up atop the booth. He's holding onto Louis Tomlinson while Zayn Malik gives Tomlinson a boost. Meanwhile, the baby of the group, Harry Styles, plays the role of the cool, mature onlooker this time, as he stands back with his arms crossed and a bemused look on his face.

They're all wearing either suit jackets or button-down shirts, looking a little more grown-up than on their 'Up All Night' album cover — but not by much. This is the playful, carefree One Direction that fans everywhere have come to love.

Start the countdown, Directioners: 'Take Me Home' will hit stores on Nov. 13, and pre-orders begin as early as next Monday, Sept. 3. According to a press release, the 1D guys co-wrote several songs on the new album and also worked with Ed Sheeran , Dr. Luke, Shellback and Toby Gad.

The first single, 'Live While We're Young,' debuts on U.S. radio on Sept. 24 and hits iTunes on Oct. 1. The song is already the fastest-selling pre-order in history , and we have a hunch that the album might break some records too. There's no stopping One Direction mania right now!

A London Tour Through One Direction Music Videos

One fun way to experience another country is to get to know it through its music . Music is like a time capsule. It tells you a lot about the identity and interests of a specific period that other experiences may not be able to.

While waiting for travel to become safer, why not take a virtual London tour through the lenses of one of the biggest boy bands of recent times? Who better to take you on an English trip than One Direction, right?

Just a little tip: this trip will be more fun if you sing along. Review the music, watch the music videos, and ready your vocal cords. Kick your preps up a notch by taking singing lessons in the meantime!

But First, Why One Direction?

As one of the most memorable British acts of the 2010s, why not? They have several music videos that prominently feature famous London landmarks that both Directioners and casual tourists will definitely recognize.

Fangirl/fanboy or not, watching One Direction music videos feels a bit like getting to know the London of six to 10 years ago. I think this is even a cause to get more excited about traveling again. It’s interesting to see how places evolve with time.

1D Songs and London Landmarks

Not all 1D music videos were filmed in London. But here is a shortlist of their London-shot videos and a few tips to help you when the time comes to visit.

One Thing: Open-top Bus Tour

The “One Thing” music video saw the boy band taking a London tour on a double-deck bus. Some famous locations you may notice in the video are Millennium Bridge, Trafalgar Square, and the Parliament.

Trafalgar Square is the place where the five members did a live performance in the music video. The area is a historical landmark, made to remember the British victory against French and Spanish troops during the Battle of Trafalgar . The place is riddled with statues and fixtures commemorating historical figures, so take the time to look at them all when you visit.

London bus stop

One Way or Another: 10 Downing Street

“One Way or Another (Teenage Kicks)” is a cover/medley of American band Blondie’s “One Way or Another” and The Undertones’ “Teenage Kicks.” The music video was shot in various locations in Africa, New York, Tokyo, and London. It was released in support of Comic Relief, a British charity.

In one of its scenes, you can see the members up to some funny shenanigans with then-Prime Minister David Cameron. This was filmed in 10 Downing Street, the official residence of the British prime minister. The area is, unfortunately, not open to the public for safety reasons.

But don’t worry because a copy of the 10 Downing Street door exists in London. Just visit 10 Adam Street , which is nearby from The Strand. To the untrained eye, it looks similar to the iconic 10 Downing Street black door!

Midnight Memories: River Thames and Tower Bridge

This is another music video where they go around London, but they do it at night. In this one, they take a boat ride on the River Thames. There are many available cruises with different offerings, but I suggest you go for one that allows you to hop on and hop off at various landmarks. It saves you a lot of walking!

The boys also climb up Tower Bridge, one of the most recognizable London landmarks. Aside from being a stunner from afar, the tower also lets you climb up to get a thrill from its glass-bottom walkways.

Night Changes: Museum of Natural History

Harry Styles’ ice skating scenes were shot at the London’s National History Museum skating rink. Yes, the National History Museum has its own ice skating rink! This place is trendy during the holiday season.

Should you wish to go skating here, I advise you to wear thick socks because the skates may be a little uncomfortable. You are also allowed to bring your own skates if you have a pair.

COVID-19 Setbacks

The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have put a pause in tourism for many countries. The United Kingdom has been similarly affected.

This means temporary closures for tourist attractions and popular landmarks until the situation gets better. Tourists may not even be allowed entry to the country at all. As guidelines can change daily, regularly check airport and airline protocols and the statuses of tourist spots to get accurate information.

While waiting for wide vaccinations and the easing of travel restrictions, feel free to live vicariously through One Direction’s music videos! It’s safe, fun, and will give you a good time until the world returns to normal.

Taking your teen kids to London this summer? You might want them to take the One Direction-themed tour of the city, created by the city’s tourism board.

In a move that capitalises on one of the country’s most influential exports — the popular boy band — London’s tourism board has created an itinerary that allows young fans to trace the footsteps of their favourite members. If there’s ‘one thing’ you have to do, they advise, it’s to hop on an open-top bus tour like the one featured in the band’s video One thing, and take in sites like Big Ben, Trafalgar Square, Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral, Covent Garden and the EDF Energy London Eye. Also read: Though they stop short of recommending that you commandeer a police boat as the band does in their video Midnight memories, an alternative is to hop aboard a speedboat tour on the river Thames. RIB speedboat tours pass by the Houses of Parliament and the Tower Bridge. And for stargazing, check out neighbourhoods like Shoreditch, where band member Harry Styles owns property, and Primrose Hill, where he and bandmate Liam Payne have also been house hunting. Other Styles sightings include the Shoreditch House, and Camden Town, a popular area for strolling and shopping. Meanwhile, at the height of Biebermania, his hometown of Stratford in Canada also rode on the coattails of their most famous export by creating a travel itinerary of Justin’s Stratford.

How to travel around the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore: A look at the traffic impact and alternate routes

By Rohan Mattu

Updated on: March 28, 2024 / 12:07 PM EDT / CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE -- The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday  led to a major traffic impact for the region and cut off a major artery into and out of the port city.

A bridge column was hit by a large container ship around 1:30 a.m., sending bridge workers and vehicles into the Patapsco River. A water search for six missing workers turned to a recovery effort Tuesday night.

Drivers are told to prepare for extra commuting time until further notice.

Locator map showing the typical traffic routes of cargo vessels passing beneath the bridge and the trajectory Dali followed prior to the allision.

Alternate routes after Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse

Maryland transit authorities quickly put detours in place for those traveling through Dundalk or the Curtis Bay/Hawkins Point side of the bridge. The estimated 31,000 who travel the bridge every day will need to find a new route for the foreseeable future.

The outer loop I-695 closure shifted to exit 1/Quarantine Road (past the Curtis Creek Drawbridge) to allow for enhanced local traffic access.

The inner loop of I-695 remains closed at MD 157 (Peninsula Expressway). Additionally, the ramp from MD 157 to the inner loop of I-695 will be closed.

Alternate routes are I-95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or I-895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) for north/south routes.

Commercial vehicles carrying materials that are prohibited in the tunnel crossings, including recreation vehicles carrying propane, should plan on using I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) between Essex and Glen Burnie. This will add significant driving time.

10.jpg

Where is the Francis Scott Key Bridge?

The Key Bridge crosses the Patapsco River, a key waterway that along with the Port of Baltimore serves as a hub for East Coast shipping.

The bridge is the outermost of three toll crossings of Baltimore's Harbor and the final link in Interstate 695, known in the region as the Baltimore Beltway, which links Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

The bridge was built after the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel reached capacity and experienced heavy congestion almost daily, according to the MDTA.

Tractor-trailer inspections

Tractor-trailers that now have clearance to use the tunnels will need to be checked for hazardous materials, which are not permitted in tunnels, and that could further hold up traffic.

The MDTA says vehicles carrying bottled propane gas over 10 pounds per container (maximum of 10 containers), bulk gasoline, explosives, significant amounts of radioactive materials, and other hazardous materials are prohibited from using the Fort McHenry Tunnel (I-95) or the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-895).

Any vehicles transporting hazardous materials should use the western section of I-695 around the tunnels, officials said.

Cruise lines are scrambling to make alternative plans and avoid the Port of Baltimore while officials suspend vessel traffic amid cleanup and rescue efforts around the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse.

Three major cruise lines sail from Baltimore, though no ships were in port Tuesday morning. The next cruise was scheduled to depart Sunday, but its operator confirmed late Tuesday afternoon that the voyage would instead head out from Norfolk.

Amira M. Hairston, a spokeswoman for the Baltimore port, said in an email that the status of the upcoming cruise ship schedule is not yet known.

“At this time we do not know how long vessel traffic will be suspended. As soon as that is determined we will provide an update. Until then please keep those involved in your prayers,” Hairston wrote.

Royal Caribbean International’s Vision of the Seas left Saturday for a 12-night southern Caribbean cruise with plans to return April 4. The cruise line said in a statement that it was “closely monitoring the situation, and our port logistics team is currently working on alternatives for Vision of the Seas’ ongoing and upcoming sailings.”

“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge and extend our heartfelt prayers to all those impacted,” the company said. Royal Caribbean International will contact guests and travel partners once plans are final, the operator said.

Carnival Legend set off Sunday for a seven-day Bahamas cruise; the ship was scheduled to return March 31 and depart for its next sailing the same day. Instead of coming back to Baltimore, Carnival said late Tuesday, it will end its trip in Norfolk, and free buses will bring passengers back to Baltimore.

The ship’s next seven-day cruise will leave Norfolk and return to the port. In a news release , Carnival said it would temporarily move Baltimore operations to Norfolk “while Key Bridge rescue and cleanup efforts continue.”

“Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore,” Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, said in a statement. “We appreciate the pledge made by President Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk.”

Carnival Pride is supposed to start sailing from Baltimore next month, mostly to the Bahamas and eastern Caribbean.

Norwegian Cruise Line does not have cruises scheduled out of the port until later this year. American Cruise Lines, a U.S. river cruise operator, has Chesapeake Bay trips on small vessels scheduled from Baltimore starting in May. The cruise line said it will monitor developments “and make adjustments if needed.”

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) said it was “deeply saddened” by the bridge collapse and was closely following the situation. “Right now, the most important thing to do is to allow the emergency workers to do their work,” the group wrote in a statement.

This year, 12 ships are scheduled to make a total of 115 calls at the Port of Baltimore, the industry association said. With room for roughly 2,000 or 2,100 passengers at double occupancy, most Baltimore-based ships are much smaller than the record-breaking behemoths that sail from Florida ports.

“Any adjustments to current cruise activity at the port will be announced as soon as available by the individual cruise lines,” CLIA said in its statement.

A news release issued last month by Maryland Gov. Wes Moore’s office said that more than 444,000 individuals cruised out of the Port of Baltimore last year, the most since 2012. The Maryland Port Administration said in a news release last year that the cruise industry generates nearly 400 jobs and $63 million in revenue every year for local businesses.

The port positions itself as a convenient option for cruising year-round, thanks to its location off Interstate 95 and plentiful parking. More than 40 million people live within a six-hour drive of the city, the port administration says.

Baltimore bridge collapse

Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after being hit by a cargo ship , sending at least eight people from a construction crew into the water. Follow live updates and see photos from the scene .

How it happened: The container ship lost power shortly before hitting the bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) said. Video shows the bridge collapse in under 40 seconds.

Victims: Divers recovered the bodies of two construction workers who died , while finding other vehicles trapped and probably containing the other victims, officials said. They were fathers, husbands and hard workers . The entire crew aboard the container ship Dali survived . First responders shut down most traffic on the four-lane bridge after the crew issued an urgent mayday call. It saved lives, Moore said.

Economic impact: The collapse of the bridge, which severed ocean links to the Port of Baltimore, adds a fresh headache to already struggling global supply chains . See how the collapse will disrupt the supply of cars, coal and other goods .

History: The Key Bridge was built in the 1970s and spanned the Patapsco River. Rebuilding the bridge will probably take years and cost hundreds of millions of dollars, experts said.

Top 10 things to know before traveling to Ireland

Mar 27, 2024 • 9 min read

one direction visit home

From pub etiquette to catching public transport – here's what you need to know before you to Ireland © Atlantide Phototravel / Getty Images

A lifetime of living in Ireland has given me some insight into the vagaries of my home country, beginning with the number one rule: never assume anything. This is a country that delights in confounding even your most comfortable expectations about pretty much everything, from the weather to the quality of the wifi.

Here are 10 tips that I’m pretty comfortable giving anyone who plans a visit, whether for the first time or the fifth. I’ve got some practical tips around VAT refunds and the most efficient ways to get around, but then there’s a bunch of suggestions on how to crack the mightiest nut of all – the Irish themselves. Because be in no doubt, while Ireland has gorgeous landscapes, a rich history and the best pubs in the world, your visit will only be truly memorable if you get to know the people – friendly and welcoming but often contradictory and inscrutable.

1. Plan on at least seven days to start making sense of the country

Ireland is small, but there’s an awful lot to it. Luckily, distances in Ireland aren’t huge so you can get most anywhere in a few hours, but the list of where to go can get very long, very quickly.

It’ll take you a couple of days to even begin to make a dent in Dublin , but once you go beyond the capital you’ll need at least five days to make a lightening stop tour of the major highlights of the west: Galway and Connemara, Clare (where you’ll find the Cliffs of Moher and the most authentic traditional music in the country), Kerry (you’ll need a whole day just for the Ring of Kerry and another for the Dingle Peninsula ) and Cork , only it’s time to go home so you can only make enough time for Cork City .

Clearly the only solution is to plan for a month; at the end of it, you’ll be wanting to stay a year.

2. Keep it to casual wear

The Irish aren’t big on formal wear and only pull it out for very specific occasions (a wedding, a ball, the opening of a parliamentary session). Which means you can wear pretty much whatever you want: smart casual is the most you'll need for fancy dinners, the theatre or the concert hall.

Irish summers are warm but rarely hot, so you'll want something extra when the temperatures cool, especially in the evening. Ultimately the ever-changeable weather will determine your outfits, but a light waterproof jacket should never be beyond reach for the almost-inevitable rain. If you’re planning on doing a lot of walking – in cities or on hills – a good pair of walking shoes, preferably waterproof, will do the trick.

Add these top beaches around Ireland to your travel itinerary.

3. The land of a 100,000 welcomes

Céad míle fáilte – literally, 100,000 welcomes. The famous Irish greeting suggests a country that is big on displays of affection, but nothing could be further from the truth. A firm handshake – with eye contact – is the appropriate greeting when meeting men, women and older children for the first time. Once a friendship is made, then all bets are off and anything goes, from a hug and a kiss on the cheek (primarily amongst female friends) to an air nod and a casual "hey".

Younger Irish are less formal than their older counterparts, but even they generally eschew effusive greetings: more often than not, a quick handshake and a casual nod is the best way to say hello for the first time.

4. The Irish love to talk, until they don’t

The Irish are renowned for their chat, but with people they don’t know particularly well they generally like to keep it to topics that are light and not likely to embarrass. Despite their gregarious nature, the Irish tend to be reserved when it comes to life’s more serious issues and are very mistrustful of "oversharers".

The old adage that the Irish will talk about anything except sex, religion and politics is something of an over-simplification, but if you do find yourself steering into deeper waters around sensitive topics it’s always better to listen: locals aren’t shy about getting into heated discussion amongst themselves about all kinds of topics but take a dim view of outsiders who express (even legitimate) criticisms of Ireland or the Irish.

5. You’d better learn about the rounds system

It’s a firm rule of drinking with locals. If someone buys you a drink, you’re obliged to buy them one back – this is the bedrock of Irish pub culture. Nothing will hasten your fall from social grace here like the failure to uphold this pub law.

The time to repay the drink you’re drinking? It’s when the person you’re drinking with is just about to finish theirs. It doesn’t matter if you’re halfway through your own drink at that moment: you can’t let your drinking buddy sit in front of an empty glass. Your greatest challenge will probably be trying to keep up with your fellow drinkers, who may keep buying you drinks in every round even when you've still got a collection of unfinished pints in front of you and you're sliding face first down the bar.

6. The best way to visit cities is on foot or by public transport

Driving and parking in Irish cities is a nightmare. There’s no free parking anywhere; the unrelenting traffic will test even the most patient of drivers; and the one-way systems in major urban centres will confound you to the point of madness (although map apps are pretty good at pointing you in the right direction).

The good news is you don’t need a car to visit any Irish city. Dublin, the biggest by far, has a pretty decent system of public transport, but even then most of the major sights are within walking distance of each other. Same goes for Cork, Belfast, Limerick and Galway, which are more easily explored without a car.

Save this guide to the best road trips in Ireland.

7. The easiest way to explore Ireland is by car

If cities are best experienced without a car, the most effective way to explore the rest of the country is with one. The bus network, made up of a mix of public and private operators, is extensive and generally quite competitive, though journey times can be slow and lots of the points of interest outside towns are not served. The rail network is quicker but more limited, serving only some major towns and cities. Both buses and trains get busy during peak times; you'll need to book in advance to be guaranteed a seat.

Cars can be hired in every major town and city. The Irish drive on the left hand side; distances and speed limits in the Republic are measured in kilometres, but once you cross the invisible border into Northern Ireland everything switches to miles.

8. Ireland is good cycling country

Ireland's compact size and scenic landscapes make it a good cycling destination, albeit one you need to prepare for. The weather is unreliable, roads can be very narrow and Irish drivers tend to drive quickly, even on those narrow roads. A growing network of greenways, such as the 42km Great Western Greenway in County Mayo and the Royal Canal Greenway that runs through the midlands, are a great and hassle-free way to see the country from two wheels. A good tip for cyclists in the west is that the prevailing winds make it easier to cycle from south to north.

Buses will carry bikes, but only if there’s room. Intercity trains will also carry bikes, but you’ll need to book a space in advance as there’s limited capacity. Suburban rail services in Dublin won’t take bikes during rush hour (7am to 10am and 4pm to 7pm). A number of Irish companies arrange cycle tours, including Go Visit Ireland  and Cycling Safaris .

A scene from the annual Christmas Day swim, with hundreds of swimmers turning up for a leap into the water at the Forty Foot this morning, in Dun Laoghaire, Dublin.

9. Pick the right season to travel in Ireland

June to mid-September is high season: the weather is at its best and the most popular parts of the country – Dublin , Kerry and the southern and western coasts – are at their busiest. The downside is big crowds and the highest rates for accommodation and car hire.

Rates drop off from mid-September as the crowds start to thin, but most tourist spots are still open to take advantage of the last weeks of the season. Although weather can never be predicted with any degree of accuracy, the weather can be surprisingly lovely right up to mid-October.

Low season runs from November to the middle of March; Irish winter days are short, damp and cold, but the upside is fewer visitors and some terrific accommodation deals. A lot of the west coast goes into winter hibernation, though, with a lot of attractions and hotels closing down; if you’re planning to visit during this time you should check what’s open before you travel.

Ready to head to Ireland? These are the best times to visit.

10. Claim your VAT back if you’re visiting from outside the EU

Most goods come with value-added tax (VAT) of 23%, which non-EU residents can claim back as part of the Retail Export Scheme, so long as the purchase was made with a credit card. Visitors from the UK can also benefit from this, but not visitors from Northern Ireland.

Before making a purchase, check with the retailer that they operate the scheme. If they do, you will be issued an export voucher for the purchase, which you need to get certified by customs when you leave Ireland. The voucher is sent back to the retailer who then refunds you the VAT (minus any processing fee).

Rather than operate the scheme themselves, many retailers use VAT-refunding agencies, whereby you go through the same process of presenting the agency’s own certificate at customs. Some agencies, though, operate a scheme where you don’t pay any VAT upfront, but if you don’t file the paperwork correctly (either sending it back to the agency or presenting it to customs) your card will be charged later. Some goods such as books, children's clothing and educational items are excluded from VAT.

Pennsylvania man in 'Scream' mask killed neighbor with chain saw, then went home to watch a movie, police say

A Pennsylvania man attacked and killed his neighbor this week using a knife and a chain saw while wearing a mask and costume like the one from the movie "Scream," officials said.

The man then returned home and watched a movie until police came, according to a criminal complaint from the Pennsylvania State Police.

Police said Zak Moyer, 30, surrendered after the attack and was taken into custody without incident. He has been charged with criminal homicide and is being held at the Carbon County Correctional Facility.

Lehighton Borough police and later state police responded to an active assault incident Monday in Carbon County, in which a man attacked another man using a knife and a chain saw.

Officials found Edward Whitehead Jr., 59, who lived at the home, had been "struck" in the head with the weapons by a man who was "wearing a mask and a black costume-like garment, consistent with the 'Scream' movie character," according to the criminal complaint.

Whitehead was taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries, state police said. He had cuts on his right arm and on the right side of his head above his eyebrow, wounds on his hands that were "consistent with defensive wounds," and "a large bleeding wound to the right side of the head," the complaint said.

Security video showed the suspect leaving Whitehead's home through the back door and entering the rear door of a home next door, where neighbors said Moyer lived, the complaint said.

Police established a perimeter around Moyer's home and communicated with him through a notebook, the complaint said.

Moyer's sister told police Monday that her brother told her a week ago that he wanted to kill Whitehead, according to the complaint.

According to the complaint, Moyer told police that he had gone to the family's house Monday with a knife and a chain saw while wearing the "Scream" costume to scare them. Asked about the costume and the weapons, police said, Moyer admitted he had planned to kill Whitehead.

Moyer also admitted to stabbing Whitehead in the head, returning to his home to watch a movie until police arrived, and hiding the chain saw in the attic and the knife in his desk drawer, according to the criminal complaint.

Police said in a news release that the investigation is active and there is no threat to the surrounding community.

How the Key Bridge Collapsed in Baltimore: Maps and Photos

By Weiyi Cai ,  Agnes Chang ,  Lauren Leatherby ,  Lazaro Gamio ,  Leanne Abraham and Scott Reinhard

On Tuesday, a major bridge in Baltimore collapsed into the water seconds after it was struck by a cargo ship, sending vehicles on the bridge into the river below. The ship lost power and issued a mayday call shortly before it hit the bridge.

A video shows the cargo ship striking the bridge and the resulting collapse of the bridge.

The ship, a 948-foot-long cargo vessel called Dali, was about a half hour into its journey toward Colombo, Sri Lanka, when it hit a main pillar of the bridge. All crew members are safe, according to the ship’s owners.

Follow our live coverage .

A mayday call from the ship gave officials enough time to stop traffic at both ends of the bridge. The waters where the bridge collapsed are about 50 feet deep. By Tuesday morning, six construction workers who had been fixing potholes on the bridge remained missing as divers and other emergency workers on boats and helicopters continued to search for them. Two others had been rescued, and one was in the hospital.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge was opened in 1977 and carried more than 12.4 million vehicles last year. The bridge was one of the three major ways to cross the Patapsco River and formed part of Baltimore’s beltway.

The Port of Baltimore is a major trade hub that handled a record amount of foreign cargo last year. It is an especially important destination — the nation’s largest by volume last year — for deliveries of cars and light trucks.

Overall, Baltimore was the 17th biggest port in the United States in 2021, ranked by total tons, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The bridge collapse brought marine traffic there to a standstill, with seven cargo or tanker ships stranded in the harbor as of Tuesday afternoon.

Gov. Wes Moore declared a state of emergency for Maryland and said that his office was in close communication with Pete Buttigieg, the U.S. transportation secretary. The White House issued a statement saying that President Biden had been briefed on the collapse.
