Learn about the Sikh Spring Holiday: Vaisakhi

April 14, 2014 by kidworldcitizen 5 Comments

~Navjot Kaur

Vaisakhi Learn About Sikh- Kid World Citizen

Today I am sharing with Kid World Citizen readers the Sikh celebration of Vaisakhi, celebrated in April. Learn about Vaisakhi, the traditions associated with the holiday, the five core Khalsa values, and some books featuring Sikh families.

Even before becoming a mother, I always wondered how I would raise my child to become a citizen of the world. Teaching learners of the 21 st century certainly played an integral role in nurturing my own awareness of diverse needs and wants. I didn’t quite realize at the time how much that awareness and my own heritage would serve my many personal experiences through motherhood.

As my son has grown, he has embraced many cultural celebrations, from wishing us a Happy Hanukkah to sharing in the joy of Christmas. His curiosity to learn something new has been without bias and that is the way I wish it to remain. Together, we continue to learn about our interconnectedness as global citizens and this month, we will celebrate Vaisakhi.

Spring is a time for renewal and change. Many global cultures celebrate the advent of a New Year during the month of April – Songkran is celebrated in Thailand and Vesak celebrates Buddha’s birthday in places like Nepal.  The Japanese enjoy beautiful cherry blossoms during the festival of Hanami and egg hunts bring smiles for Easter. Vaisakhi is another April celebration, which is often overlooked but is deeply significant for Sikhs around the world.

Vaisakhi originates in the northern Indian state of Panjab. It is known as a time for the harvesting of crops and is celebrated with traditional Bhangra folk dance and festivities. However, this is also a special time for followers of the Sikh faith.  During the month of Vaisakh, in 1699, a new generation of citizens was introduced, called the Khalsa. These initial five citizens represented values of change and social activism and Sikhism was born.

The five core Khalsa values are:

Daya – kindness

Dharam – fairness

Himmat – courage

Mohkem – determination

Sahib – strength

The Khalsa would stand out in a crowd with a distinct visible appearance – their actions would always speak louder than words, since there would be no way to hide their visible identity.

Men (and women) were crowned with turbans to reflect their right to advocate for themselves and for others. The Khalsa raised social consciousness and gave followers an opportunity to experience equality and freedom from the restrictive social class system of the time. Last names would no longer distinguish their social status but instead, the Khalsa community would adopt a shared last name: men would be named Singh (strength of a lion) and women would be named Kaur (strength of a lioness). Sikh women had equal rights hundreds of years ago, and their distinct last name reflected their independence. They did not belong to any man, whether married or unmarried, these women (and men) carried their own identity and value.

This is the strong heritage of Vaisakhi that I choose to share with my son today. I raise him with the values of respecting all citizens, regardless of societal norms. When we learned that our son was Deaf, we knew our world was going to look and sound very different to the norm and that was alright.  We were already strong advocates for change and this would only widen my perspective and understanding of the global world. And it has. Why fit in, when you can stand out!

One of our favourite Vaisakhi traditions is to fly a kite. People in India fill rooftops with their patangs or kites. Some give their kites poetic names and send message of love through the air.

Vaisakhi is celebrated on the 13 th or 14 th of April each year. You can find instructions for constructing your own kites for Vaisakhi here . You can also print out cards and create a lion mask too .  If you are looking to fill more teachable moments, please check out the Countdown to Vaisakhi resource – it is filled with fun and engaging ideas.

Vaisakhi dee Vadayee (Happy Vaisakhi)!

Books Featuring Sikh Families

Here is a claymation video for the children’s book  A Lion’s Mane,   which explains how to tie a patka (dastaar), the turban cloth worn by Sikh boys or young men.

A Lion’s Mane   explores a young boy’s celebration of his Sikh identity: an empowering book for all children wondering “Who Am I?” Here is the trailer:

Born and raised in England and of Sikh-Panjabi heritage, Navjot Kaur is inspired by diverse environments and culture. Her first children’s book, A Lion’s Mane, won the 2010 Skipping Stones Honor Award for Multicultural and International Awareness. An Educator, Children’s author and Mother, she believes that our children can become advocates for social change and uses her writing as a way to inspire them to become active global citizens. To learn more about her, please visit  www.navjotkaur.com . For books, please visit  Saffron Press .  You can f ollow her on Pinterest  and facebook as well.

Beautifully written and well-informed article! “We are more alike than unalike” is definitely the best way to describe our shared cultures and values.

Ask Amy: My friends won’t stop asking to travel with me

vaisakh tours and travels

Dear Amy: I love to travel. It’s almost an obsession, and age (I’m over 80) has not dulled my desire to GO. I had a good job and saved so that I could travel a lot in retirement. My husband, however, has lost a lot of his wanderlust, and will only go if I beg and plead. To keep us both happy, I take one or two trips a year by myself. I have learned to enjoy being alone for a couple of weeks without having to worry about anyone else and what THEY might want to do. I’m happy to get home at the end of each trip, because I do miss my husband after time away.

My problem is with girlfriends who keep asking to come with me. At my age, a large portion of my girlfriends are either divorced or widowed. I like all of them or they wouldn’t be my friends — but there are very few that I’d want to travel and be with for a couple of weeks. Some are inclined to be negative, some talk all the time (I read in the evening), and many complain a lot about their health issues.

What do I say to stop this constant haranguing? We are currently away, and I invited one very easygoing lady, with whom I’ve been friends since the age of three, to join us for part of the trip. I posted a picture of the three of us on FB, and one woman was so upset that SHE hadn’t been invited, that she canceled a visit with her that I had planned long ago. Should I just stop talking about upcoming travels?

S: Overall, it is unwise to post about your travels — while you are away. There are many practical reasons for this (the first being that you should not telegraph the fact that you are away from your home). Being discreet about your travels would also spare you from the burden of your friends’ hurt feelings. Savvy people save their social media posts for after they’ve returned home, unpacked their bags, and edited their photos. You should not let people guilt you into including them on your travels. (You should also not guilt your husband into joining you if he doesn’t want to go.)

You are not a tour guide. You are the travel agent of your own life. If you sincerely believe that people are “constantly haranguing” you, then you should tell them, “I’m firm about this, so I wish you’d stop asking,” but you need to understand that people have the right to ask anything of you. You might have to say, “No, that wouldn’t work for me,” every single time. You might suggest to these friends that they should consider booking a tour or a cruise and travel together. Road Scholar is a nonprofit organization organizing tours and experiences for elders. You might recommend this to your circle of eager travelers.

Dear Amy: My older sister is very successful and kind. She has a habit that makes me feel very resentful, however. Whenever she acquires a new piece of furniture, she pawns off her old stuff on me. Many of the things she has dropped off at my (rental) house were things that were pawned off on her back in the day. I came home from work recently only to be greeted by a 40-year-old floral Barcalounger that we have all hated and made fun of for decades. I swear it was just sitting in my garage.

My sister behaves as if she is doing me a favor, but I have everything I want and need. What should I do?

— Not Sitting Pretty

Not Sitting: You could play this out by photoshopping the Barcalounger in various settings (a meadow, a forest, a beach) and texting your sister taunting photos about how this chair is now living its best life — but not with you. You could post it on Freecycle or Facebook, or call your local Goodwill (or another donation/resale site) and ask them to put it on their pickup schedule. Someone else will be grateful that this monster is still in circulation.

Dear Amy: As someone named Debbie, I believe it is a blight on all Debbie’s, Deb’s, Debra’s, and Deborah’s everywhere for you to refer to them as a “ Debby Downer! ” It is quite upsetting that you would allow and encourage this in your column. Kindly rescind.

— Disappointed Debbie

Debbie: I’m officially rescinding. Also canceling my T-shirt order.

Air travel may be about to get better. Here's what it means for your next flight.

Your next flight may get an upgrade.

No, not as in a bigger seat in the front of the cabin. It's bigger than that -- much bigger.

Air travel in the United States could soon improve dramatically. Here's how:

  • New federal protections for air travelers. The U.S. Senate passed new rules that require better fee disclosure, free family seating, and new ticket refund rights. It also proposed appointing a new Assistant Secretary to handle airline service problems.
  • Better seats. Southwest has announced ambitious plans to overhaul its cabin interiors. It joins other carriers, including Japan Airlines, LOT, and Swiss in rolling out new and more comfortable seats.
  • Upgraded airline performance. Air carriers have canceled fewer flights lately. For the first 11 months of last year, domestic airlines canceled only 1.4 percent of flights, according to the Department of Transportation (DOT). That's way below the 2.5 percent cancellation rate for the first 11 months of 2022 and significantly better than the same period in pre-pandemic 2019.

Check out   Elliott Confidential , the newsletter the travel industry doesn't want you to read. Each issue is filled with breaking news, deep insights, and exclusive strategies for becoming a better traveler. But don't tell anyone!

"There's a sense of optimism for the future of U.S. air travel," said Duncan Greenfield-Turk, the chief travel designer for Global Travel Moments , "The airline industry has an opportunity to rebuild and reimagine air travel, potentially ushering in a new golden age marked by superior service, innovation, and passenger satisfaction."

Passengers want to get off the plane first. Here's how you can do it.

Me first! How passengers are cheating their way onto the plane faster

Is it time to start celebrating a new golden age of air travel?

Hang on, hang on. We're not there yet.

In fact, economy class passengers are still pretty unhappy with their travel experience, according to the latest J. D. Power North American Airline Satisfaction Study . In categories such as ease of travel, onboard experience, and trust, the airlines scored lower than they did last year.

"We’re seeing signs of weakening consumer satisfaction," said Mike Taylor, J.D. Power's managing director for travel and hospitality.

The silver lining: Amid declining fares, passengers say they got more value for their money when they flew compared to 2022.

Hey, it's a start.

But passengers say change is in the air. Alex Beene, a community coordinator from Nashville and a frequent air traveler, said his last few flights were on time and went smoothly. And he hardly had to wait at the TSA screening area.

"I've never felt as good about air travel as I have the last few months," he told me.

He's not alone. I've spoken with many air travelers who share his sense of optimism. It feels like for the first time in years, the stars are aligning for airline passengers.

But are they really?

This golden age could be a fake-out

Reality check: This new golden age could turn out to be fool's gold.

The new luggage fees announced last week felt like a splash of cold water on all that optimism. This year, four domestic airlines have raised their checked baggage fees. United Airlines is the latest to announce an increase. You'll pay $40 for your first checked bag, or $35 if you pay online at least 24 hours before your flight. That's an increase of $5.

And the new Senate provisions for air travel , while positive, still have to be reconciled with the House version of the FAA Reauthorization bill this spring. That probably means some of the more pro-consumer provisions will get stricken by the airline-friendly Congress.

How about those new airline seats? Generally, new aircraft interiors improve the flying experience. But Southwest's new interior design , which debuts next year, has been a little controversial. Critics have hammered its new seats for looking too thin and uncomfortable. One popular TikToker called them "lawn chairs."

That may be unfair. True, the seats cut a slender profile, but they are the result of "careful and extensive" research, according to the airline. Also, none of the critics have sat in one of the seats yet, so there's that.

What about the airline industry's performance? Yes, it's impressive, and the government wastes no opportunity to take full credit for it. But it will only last until the next computer outage or bad weather plunges an airline hub into total chaos.

"Let me be blunt," said Bill McGee, a senior fellow for Aviation at the American Economic Liberties Project . "The airline industry is still broken."

Here's how to protect yourself: Hackers are coming for your travel accounts

Hotel parking fees are out of control. Here's how to fight them.

How to have a better flight anyway

Golden age or not, there's only one thing that really matters: How is your next flight? None of the trends and statistics really matter if an airline cancels your flight and leaves you sleeping on the airport floor. Here's how to sidestep bad service:

  • Book a ticket on an airline that offers excellent service. There's a reason airlines like Delta, Southwest and Alaska keep winning customer service awards. If you cheap out and buy a ticket on a discount airline, you will get what you pay for. No golden age for you!
  • Avoid chaos. Try to avoid weekends and especially the days before and after major holidays. And always try to book the first flight of the day so that if something goes wrong, you won't be stranded at an airport waiting for a connection. If you have to fly on a busy holiday, pack your patience and a good travel insurance policy.
  • Know your rights . Whether Congress passes new laws or not, you still need to know your rights as an air traveler. (Yes, you have some.) For domestic flights, the DOT's Fly Rights page is an excellent resource. You can fly during a difficult time and still get decent service if you know your rights and can advocate for yourself if service goes south.

But perhaps the best advice of all is to keep your expectations modest. No one is turning the clock back to the 1960s, when even the economy class seats had plenty of legroom and the service was stellar. In a deregulated, post-pandemic airline industry, take nothing for granted – and focus on the basics.

"The greatest service of all," said MIT management professor Arnold Barnett, "is getting you to your destination safely."
