How to Be a Green Triathlete

Women and men enjoying outdoor lifestyles.

You're just coming up on mile 10. You've had an amazing race so far. The weather is cool but not cold; the sun is shining but not so brightly it hurts your eyes. The size of the field is perfect -- large enough to feel competitive but not an overwhelming mass of legs and arms. You swam like a champ and were able to get out of the water and onto your bike in one smooth motion. So far, your running has been strong, and you feel great. As you come up to the water station, all the runners begin to jockey for position -- the closer you can get yourself to the outside of the pack, the faster you'll clear the water station. This is key for two reasons: you'll stay on pace and, perhaps most importantly, you won't slip and fall on one of the hundreds of paper cups that were thrown on the ground by the athletes who've passed.

But those discarded cups are hardly the only waste at many triathlons. The amount of garbage left behind at today's races was unheard of in 1974 when the Mission Bay Triathlon first put the multi-sport event on the public's radar [source: Johnstone ]. With a field of just 46 people and a small crowd of spectators, the amount of resources needed to create the race was minimal. Since then, the popularity of triathlons has grown at a quick pace. What started as a small West Coast event has turned into a world-wide sport with hundreds of races each year and thousands of participants [source: USA Triathlon ].

The next sections will explore how race organizers are "greening" their triathlons and what you can do to lesson your impact while participating in one of the most exciting tests of endurance and athleticism out there.

Green Triathlon Events

Green triathlon gear, green triathlon training.

A traditional triathlon consists of three separate events -- swimming, biking and running -- rolled into one race. The rise in the popularity of triathlons brings with it a rise in the amount of waste generated at each event. From paper cups left on the roads to race T-shirts made in factories overseas, triathlons have more of an impact of the environment that you might think.

In addition to pre-race bags filled with plastic and paper promotional materials, other waste includes plastic bottles and food packages strewn along the course, as well as fossil fuels consumed by boats, staging cars, motorcycles and buses for transporting athletes.

This problem hasn't slipped by race organizers and triathletes unnoticed. The awareness of the impact one race has on its immediate environment -- and the waste stream as a whole -- is changing the culture of consumption in triathlons. In 2007, the Council for Responsible Sport was founded by the Directors of the Freshwater Trust Portland Triathlon with the goal of helping race organizers green their events in the categories of waste, climate, equipment and materials, community outreach, health promotion and innovation.

Each category is organized on a point system -- the more green points a triathlon earns, the higher it is ranked as a sustainable sporting event. In order to be certified as "green" by the Council for Responsible Sport, triathlons must satisfy a list of criteria including:

  • Recycling of cardboard, paper, metal, plastic and glass
  • Food waste composted or donated to local charities
  • Reduction of how much waste one participant creates
  • Use of alternative fuels to power race vehicles and transport athletes
  • Consumption of local foods

In 2007, three triathlons in Boulder, Colo., sponsored by Tri Sustainability made huge inroads into building greener races. With a mission of "zero waste, carbon neutral and local," the triathlon organizers worked with local groups to offset the impact of the events on the surrounding environment. The results speak for themselves. Tri Sustainability recycled 3,350 gallons of commingled containers (plastic, paper and metal), more than 4,000 pounds of cardboard (which spared 38 trees) and collected 19,649 pounds of compostable material [source: Turner]. Tri Sustainability plans to increase greening efforts while continuing to refine its approach to creating environmentally friendly triathlons.

Athletes train long and hard to perform to the best of their abilities. Planners of "green" triathlons are now doing the same, setting goals to minimize their impact while promoting environmental awareness. In the next section, we'll learn about the latest trends in athletic gear.

Bikes, running shoes, swim caps and racing clothes all have to be disposed of when you are done using them. Every year, tons of gear wind up in landfills. Here's an example to highlight the problem: Many experts recommend that running shoes be replaced after 300 to 500 miles (483 to 800 kilometers) [source: Runner's World]. When you pull a brand new pair out of the box, it's likely your old ones are headed for the garbage dump. If you run an average of 1,500 miles (2,400 kilometers) a year, that's at least three new pairs a year. If you run for 20 years and throw out each used pair, you'll toss 60 pairs of running shoes into the garbage. Now compound that figure by the millions of runners around the world throwing out three or more pairs a year. That's quite a few shoes going into a landfill.

In recent years, gear for the environmentally conscious has been introduced into the market. For example, there's now a biodegradable running shoe by Brooks. Rather than using ethylene vinyl acetate, which can take up to 1,000 years to decompose, the sole is made using BioMoGo, a material expected to biodegrade over the course of 20 years. The potential result could save 30 million pounds of waste. Brooks is open-sourcing this technology, increasing the likelihood that fewer running shoes will end up in landfills [source: Lebovits ].

Being aware of the racing clothes you wear is another important step in sustainable gear. Many manufacturers use organic dyes (such as mineral dyes) or recycled fabrics. Looking to recycle your worn-out swim caps? EcoAthlete , a group in Seattle, Wash., is happy to take them and turn them into flip-flops.

Racing-bike technology has changed considerably over the years. However, the process of bike manufacturing takes its toll on the environment. Frames made from alloys have replaced heavier aluminum frames, making for a lighter bike. The problem is that alloys are mined, and the waste generated by this process huge. A burgeoning trend is racing bikes made partially from bamboo. Growing bamboo is a more sustainable practice than using metals that require intense manufacturing. These bikes are garnering positive reviews. [source: Charleton ].

Other ways to reduce the impact of your bike include:

  • Using soy-based lubricants on your bike chains
  • Recycling inner tubes -- many eco-friendly products are made from the rubber
  • Recycling bike components
  • Selling your old bike or donating it to a charity

Next up: environmentally friendly ways to train for your triathlon.

One of the most important components of training is food. What you eat plays a large role in your performance. It also is a huge factor on the health of our planet. Food production in the United States consumes an incredible amount of natural resources. In addition, trucking food long distances requires the use of fossil fuels and contributes to carbon emissions [source: Sierra Club ].

Eating locally grown foods is an excellent way to help offset the environmental impact of large-scale farming. However, most athletes depend on "sports foods" to get them through training and racing. Cut down on packaging -- and save money -- by making your own power foods. Ingredients like rolled oats, peanut butter and nuts for sports bars can be found at the grocery store. According to a recent study sponsored by The University of Memphis Exercise and Sports Nutrition Laboratory, honey is "nature's sports gel." It is easy to digest and provides a quick boost of carbohydrates during a race. It also helps your post-training or race recovery by promoting muscle recuperation and glycogen restoration [source: Kraider, et al .]. You can buy honey locally from beekeepers or at farmers markets. For more information on local honey retailers check Bee Culture , a national organization for beekeepers.

Instead of using disposable water bottles, carry one that can be reused. Look for bottles made without BPA (bisphenol A), a plasticizer some scientists contend is linked to health problems [source: Buscher & Shelby]. Stainless steel bottles are another option for your water or sports drink.

If you have safe running or cycling routes that can get you to and from work, ditching the car is a great way to log some miles. As a form of transportation, bikes emit zero carbon emissions, reducing your overall carbon footprint. The same goes for running. A bonus to cycling and running to and from your job is that it helps you fit your workouts into a busy schedule.

With a little planning, triathletes in training can take care of their bodies and the planet.

Some staggering statistics from the United States

  • Americans throw away 2.5 million plastic bottles an hour.
  • Enough aluminum cans are thrown away to rebuild the nation's air fleets every three months.
  • Enough plastic film is made each year to shrink-wrap the state of Texas.

How To Be A Green Triathlete

Fun stuff , triathlons.

running-in-the-high-plains-by-hartvandenburg.jpg

It’s not just a color anymore, but identifies an ecological movement that has risen to the forefront of cultural awareness in recent years.

It’s a mentality and way of life that attempts to reduce an individual’s and society’s use of the Earth’s natural resources.

It’s often referred to as “sustainable living” or “ecological living,” which involves reducing our carbon footprints by such things as altering methods of transportation, energy consumption, and diet.

Being green means living your life in a way that is consistent with sustainability in which the Earth’s resources are used at a rate at which they can be replenished. Being green is being respectful of humanity’s symbiotic relationship with the Earth’s natural ecology and cycles. By minimizing our “ecological footprints” — the extent to which we create an environmental impact — we hope to preserve the Earth for future generations of human beings and other life.

It’s not easy being green, but there are a wealth of resources aimed at educating us about ecological living, and offering practical guidance in this way of life. For example, there is Wikia Green , which is a database of resources related to living green. The singular most practical site I have come across about living green is The Fun Times Guide to Living Green , written by Jeffrey Davis.

So, what does this have to do with the sport of triathlon and you as a triathlete?

Ecological Footprint of Triathlons

For me as a triathlete, I began thinking about this issue while doing a triathlon at a state park in Tennessee.

During the biking portion of the event, a triathlete ahead of me tossed his empty Gu packet to the ground. I wondered if you added up all the sports nutrition packaging tossed to the ground during a triathlon, and multiplied that number by every triathlon that took place across the globe in on year, how large of a landfill would you need to bury all that waste.

Or, what about the hundreds of thousands of plastic water bottles that are given out in triathlon events each year?

Or the hundreds of thousands of plastic goodie bags filled with paper advertisements and event promotion pieces?

There’s no question that the sport of triathlon leaves an ecological footprint.

Sporting events, in general, leave a significant ecological footprint .

Green-Friendly Sports

This past October, runners at the ING Hartford Marathon rehydrated at a 40-person, solar-powered water bubbler engineered specifically for the event. The marathoners, half-marathoners and 5K finishers then filled up on Connecticut grown apples, regionally-based Stonyfield Yogurt, locally made apple crisp or a variety of 100% organic foods including bananas and salads.

These efforts — in addition to aggressive recycling, fuel cell bus transportation, recyclable sugarcane water cups on the course and use of solar-powered generators — add up to what race director Beth Shluger hopes will be the “ healthiest marathon in the country .” The 40-person water bubbler helped eliminate 10,000 water bottles.

The green mentality is growing in endurance sports.

ReSport Standards & Qualifying Events

The Council for Responsible Sport ( ReSport ) was created in 2007, and provides an independent, comprehensive certification for sustainable athletic events.

By defining realistic objectives and providing a framework for achieving them, ReSport enables event directors to incorporate environmental responsibility into their events while informing consumers which events adhere to these standards.

The standards are broken down into 6 primary areas: Waste, Climate, Equipment and Materials, Community and Outreach, Health Promotion, and Innovation. “Credits” are earned by applying these standards, qualifying an event as a ReSport event. In 2008, triathlon events that qualified included:

CB&I Triathlon (Woodlands, TX) (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Keuka Lake Triathlon (Keuka Park, NY) Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon in Fairmount Park (Philadelphia, PA) Deschutes Dash (Bend, OR) Boulder Peak Triathlon (Boulder, CO) Urban Epic (Portland, ME) Oregon Trout City of Portland Triathlon (Portland, OR) San Francisco Triathlon (San Francisco, CA) USA Triathlon Age Group Nationals (Forest Grove, OR) Peregrine Charities Triathlon (Waterloo, IA) Land Rover Pumpkinman Triathlon (Las Vegas, NV) (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Marin County Triathlon (San Rafael, CA)

Athletes Are Going Green Too

earth-hands-by-aussiegall.jpg

For example, here are several tips for becoming a “green runner.”

Triathletes are training, racing, promoting, and living green. Professional triathlete Chris Lieto officially launched The Green Athlete campaign while attending the 2008 Ironman California 70.3 event in Oceanside, CA. The campaign provides information, research, and resources for athletes committed to going green .

Organizations such as Soles4Souls give athletes more green options. In this case, “recycling running shoes” by donating running shoes instead of tossing them in the trash.

Are You A Green Triathlete?

What would it mean for you to become a green triathlete ?

What follows are several “green steps” I offer to you as a starting point.

Here’s the challenge: pick 3 “green steps” off the list and incorporate them into your life as a person and triathlete.

Jim’s Triathlete Green Steps

Sign the ReSport Athlete Petition . Read The Fun Times Guide to Living Green in the month of January. You do a lot of cycling, right? Use your bike twice in January in a case where you would normally drive your car. Watch this brief video . Looking for a creative way to combine strength and endurance, work those back/shoulder muscles and get the heart rate up, oh, and be nicer to the planet and save money on gas? This summer, do it this way . When purchasing your next item of triathlon apparel, choose items that are made of natural or recycled fibers . Don’t throw away those endless number of swim caps you collect from triathlon events. Save and recycle them .

I’m over 40 years old, but I don’t give up easily. It wasn’t too long ago that I was exploring the idea of doing my first triathlon. If I can do it, you can too! I'm proof that with a little determination and training, you can get a great deal of fulfillment participating in marathons, triathlons… even ultramarathons.

Juanpe López wins Tour of the Alps

green tour triathlon

The animated Andalusian climber successfully defended his race lead all the way to the finish in Levico Terme, after five days of racing.

How it happened.

On Stage 3, Juanpe attacked through the icy rain to take a beautiful solo win 38 seconds ahead of his main GC rivals. A solid margin, but by no means comfortable with two more days in the mountains left to race. The next day, proudly wearing the green jersey as race leader, Juanpe stepped up and doggedly defended his lead. With so many riders dangerously close in the overall standings, he had no choice but to follow every move he could, right to the end of the stage.

The final stage, a loop around Levico Terme, presented two more mountains standing in the way of Juanpe and his first stage-race victory. Fortunately, it wasn’t just Juanpe who stepped up to the challenge, but also his teammates who played a vital role in controlling the peloton throughout the day. When the time came for Juanpe to take matters into his own hands, he did, looking as composed and experienced as his nickname ‘El Patrón’ suggests.

As the group of climbers fought for the stage win, Juanpe crossed the line a few meters behind punching the air with elation to celebrate the first overall race victory of his career.

The winner’s words

“I feel super happy because I worked really hard in Tenerife with the team, and being with all my teammates there made me really motivated. Last year I had some hard months after the crash, but now I’m really good, especially in the downhill. I really surprised myself, it was super nice for me.

“Today the team did a good job one by one, the young ones – Nils and Liam – were great from the start, and then Fabio and Dario were really important for me, keeping me calm and giving me confidence. Then, if I said Amanuel and Carlos did their job 100%, that wouldn’t be enough praise. They did a f***ing nice job. This victory is for the whole team.

“The green jersey is extra special because it is the color of Real Betis, my team.”

Nicki minaj's husband begs court to let him go on tour with her outside u.s., nicki minaj's hubby begs court for green light i wanna go on tour too.

4/17 -- 8:28 AM PT -- Kenneth Petty 's request to travel internationally with Nicki Minaj was granted ... a judge signed off on the dates.

Nicki Minaj's husband, Kenneth Petty, is asking a court for permission to travel out of the country so he can join her on tour in Europe ... and he says he'll be needed overseas.

According to court docs, obtained by TMZ, KP says he isn't just looking to globe-trot with Nicki for fun -- on the contrary, he says it's necessary to join her on the European leg of her "Pink Friday 2" world tour for a bunch of reasons, mainly to provide childcare for their son.

The start date he lists for the anticipated travel schedule is April 17, 2024 ... and he says there will be stops in Canada, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Austria, Ireland, Switzerland, and Romania.

Petty says he plans to be back in the U.S. by July 14, 2024, right after the tour wraps up -- and is hoping for a green light to join his wife ASAP.

According to the docs, his probation officer hasn't raised any objections to his travel request. However, if Kenneth's request gets approved, he'll likely need to provide the officer with a detailed travel itinerary and also check in once he's back.

As previously reported, Kenneth is currently serving 3 years probation for failing to register as a sex offender in California. That's the reason he even has to jump through these hoops.

A judge has yet to sign off -- and the court denies his request, Kenneth's gotta stay put.

Escape from alcatraz aquathlon.

June 8, 2024 San Francisco, CA

green tour triathlon

You’ve probably heard of the iconic Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon —where you get to swim with sharks, brave the San Francisco hills, and run up the infamous sand ladder. But what about the Escape Aquathlon?

This event takes place the day before the triathlon and follows a swim-run format with a 750 meter-swim and 5K run. The race begins with a jump off the San Francisco Spirit into the 55-degree waters below that are notorious for strong current, waves, and aquatic life. The swim finishes at the same exit point as the triathlon, just past the St. Francis Yacht Club. Then, athletes head into transition at Marina Green and run a 5K along the San Francisco Bay Trail. No bikes, no hairy descents required, but the race is capped at 400 athletes.

Because the aquathlon is on Saturday and the triathlon is on Sunday, you can do both and conquer the Escape Back-to-Back Challenge. The triathlon is extremely hard to get into, but the aquathlon comes with an added benefit. The top three male and female swim times are automatically granted “The Luck of The Draw,” meaning you get to skip the random draw process for the triathlon and receive an invitation to register for next year’s race.

ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Orcas Island

Sept. 15, 2024 Eastsound, WA

Odyssey SwimRun Casco Bay Islands

Swim-run is an extremely fast growing segment of multisport where athletes team up to traverse varied terrain over land and sea—running and swimming, switching between each multiple times. In some formats, a team of two is tethered in order to maintain contact in the water and on land. Also, gear like swim paddles and giant pull buoys is allowed.

This is part-adventure race as well. The run course is marked by neon pink, survey flags, tree hanging ribbons, and arrow signs. The swim course isn’t usually outlined beyond land markings (there might be a swim buoy, or there might not).

ÖTILLÖ Swimrun has four races in the US in 2024: Casco Bay Islands in Maine, Mackinac Island in Michigan, Orcas Island in Washington, and Austin Pace Bend in Texas. At Orcas Island, there are both short and long course distances with solo and team options. Athletes will swim portions of the race in freshwater mountain lakes and a saltwater bay and run segments on paved and dirt roads, forest trails, and up rock scrambles.

The total swim and run distances covered include 3.5 miles of swimming and 35K of running for the long course and 2 miles of swimming and 17K of running total for the short course. The longest segment distances include a .5-mile swim and 8K run in the long course and a .5-mile swim and 5.25K run in the short course.

In 2023, the plan was to bring SGRAIL to the U.S. – specifically, Big Bear, California – for a new SGRAIL 50 race, consisting of a one-mile swim, 23.9-mile bike, and 6.2-mile run. Sadly, the 2023 event had to be canceled, but news is that it will be back in 2024 with a date to be announced!

The Comprehensive Guide to Moscow Nightlife

green tour triathlon

Moscow’s nightlife scene is thriving, and arguably one of the best the world has to offer – top-notch Russian women, coupled with a never-ending list of venues, Moscow has a little bit of something for everyone’s taste. Moscow nightlife is not for the faint of heart – and if you’re coming, you better be ready to go Friday and Saturday night into the early morning.

This comprehensive guide to Moscow nightlife will run you through the nuts and bolts of all you need to know about Moscow’s nightclubs and give you a solid blueprint to operate with during your time in Moscow.

What you need to know before hitting Moscow nightclubs

Prices in moscow nightlife.

Before you head out and start gaming all the sexy Moscow girls , we have to talk money first. Bring plenty because in Moscow you can never bring a big enough bankroll. Remember, you’re the man so making a fuzz of not paying a drink here or there will not go down well.

Luckily most Moscow clubs don’t do cover fees. Some electro clubs will charge 15-20$, depending on their lineup. There’s the odd club with a minimum spend of 20-30$, which you’ll drop on drinks easily. By and large, you can scope out the venues for free, which is a big plus.

Bottle service is a great deal in Moscow. At top-tier clubs, it starts at 1,000$. That’ll go a long way with premium vodka at 250$, especially if you have three or four guys chipping in. Not to mention that it’s a massive status boost for getting girls, especially at high-end clubs.

Without bottle service, you should estimate a budget of 100-150$ per night. That is if you drink a lot and hit the top clubs with the hottest girls. Scale down for less alcohol and more basic places.

Dress code & Face control

Door policy in Moscow is called “face control” and it’s always the guy behind the two gorillas that gives the green light if you’re in or out.

In Moscow nightlife there’s only one rule when it comes to dress codes:

You can never be underdressed.

People dress A LOT sharper than, say, in the US and that goes for both sexes. For high-end clubs, you definitely want to roll with a sharp blazer and a pocket square, not to mention dress shoes in tip-top condition. Those are the minimum requirements to level the playing field vis a vis with other sharply dressed guys that have a lot more money than you do. Unless you plan to hit explicit electro or underground clubs, which have their own dress code, you are always on the money with that style.

Getting in a Moscow club isn’t as hard as it seems: dress sharp, speak English at the door and look like you’re in the mood to spend all that money that you supposedly have (even if you don’t). That will open almost any door in Moscow’s nightlife for you.

Types of Moscow Nightclubs

In Moscow there are four types of clubs with the accompanying female clientele:

High-end clubs:

These are often crossovers between restaurants and clubs with lots of tables and very little space to dance. Heavy accent on bottle service most of the time but you can work the room from the bar as well. The hottest and most expensive girls in Moscow go there. Bring deep pockets and lots of self-confidence and you have a shot at swooping them.

Regular Mid-level clubs:

They probably resemble more what you’re used to in a nightclub: big dancefloors, stages and more space to roam around. Bottle service will make you stand out more but you can also do well without. You can find all types of girls but most will be in the 6-8 range. Your targets should always be the girls drinking and ideally in pairs. It’s impossible not to swoop if your game is at least half-decent.

Basic clubs/dive bars:

Usually spots with very cheap booze and lax face control. If you’re dressed too sharp and speak no Russian, you might attract the wrong type of attention so be vigilant. If you know the local scene you can swoop 6s and 7s almost at will. Usually students and girls from the suburbs.

Electro/underground clubs:

Home of the hipsters and creatives. Parties there don’t mean meeting girls and getting drunk but doing pills and spacing out to the music. Lots of attractive hipster girls if that is your niche. That is its own scene with a different dress code as well.

green tour triathlon

What time to go out in Moscow

Moscow nightlife starts late. Don’t show up at bars and preparty spots before 11pm because you’ll feel fairly alone. Peak time is between 1am and 3am. That is also the time of Moscow nightlife’s biggest nuisance: concerts by artists you won’t know and who only distract your girls from drinking and being gamed. From 4am to 6am the regular clubs are emptying out but plenty of people, women included, still hit up one of the many afterparty clubs. Those last till well past 10am.

As far as days go: Fridays and Saturdays are peak days. Thursday is an OK day, all other days are fairly weak and you have to know the right venues.

The Ultimate Moscow Nightclub List

Short disclaimer: I didn’t add basic and electro clubs since you’re coming for the girls, not for the music. This list will give you more options than you’ll be able to handle on a weekend.

Preparty – start here at 11PM

Classic restaurant club with lots of tables and a smallish bar and dancefloor. Come here between 11pm and 12am when the concert is over and they start with the actual party. Even early in the night tons of sexy women here, who lean slightly older (25 and up).

The second floor of the Ugolek restaurant is an extra bar with dim lights and house music tunes. Very small and cozy with a slight hipster vibe but generally draws plenty of attractive women too. A bit slower vibe than Valenok.

Very cool, spread-out venue that has a modern library theme. Not always full with people but when it is, it’s brimming with top-tier women. Slow vibe here and better for grabbing contacts and moving on.

green tour triathlon

High-end: err on the side of being too early rather than too late because of face control.

Secret Room

Probably the top venue at the moment in Moscow . Very small but wildly popular club, which is crammed with tables but always packed. They do parties on Thursdays and Sundays as well. This club has a hip-hop/high-end theme, meaning most girls are gold diggers, IG models, and tattooed hip hop chicks. Very unfavorable logistics because there is almost no room no move inside the club but the party vibe makes it worth it. Strict face control.

Close to Secret Room and with a much more favorable and spacious three-part layout. This place attracts very hot women but also lots of ball busters and fakes that will leave you blue-balled. Come early because after 4am it starts getting empty fast. Electronic music.

A slightly kitsch restaurant club that plays Russian pop and is full of gold diggers, semi-pros, and men from the Caucasus republics. Thursday is the strongest night but that dynamic might be changing since Secret Room opened its doors. You can swoop here but it will be a struggle.

green tour triathlon

Mid-level: your sweet spot in terms of ease and attractiveness of girls for an average budget.

Started going downwards in 2018 due to lax face control and this might get even worse with the World Cup. In terms of layout one of the best Moscow nightclubs because it’s very big and bottle service gives you a good edge here. Still attracts lots of cute girls with loose morals but plenty of provincial girls (and guys) as well. Swooping is fairly easy here.

I haven’t been at this place in over a year, ever since it started becoming ground zero for drunken teenagers. Similar clientele to Icon but less chic, younger and drunker. Decent mainstream music that attracts plenty of tourists. Girls are easy here as well.

Sort of a Coyote Ugly (the real one in Moscow sucks) with party music and lots of drunken people licking each others’ faces. Very entertaining with the right amount of alcohol and very easy to pull in there. Don’t think about staying sober in here, you’ll hate it.

Artel Bessonitsa/Shakti Terrace

Electronic music club that is sort of a high-end place with an underground clientele and located between the teenager clubs Icon and Gipsy. Very good music but a bit all over the place with their vibe and their branding. You can swoop almost any type of girl here from high-heeled beauty to coked-up hipsters, provided they’re not too sober.

green tour triathlon

Afterparty: if by 5AM  you haven’t pulled, it’s time to move here.

Best afterparty spot in terms of trying to get girls. Pretty much no one is sober in there and savage gorilla game goes a long way. Lots of very hot and slutty-looking girls but it can be hard to tell apart who is looking for dick and who is just on drugs but not interested. If by 9-10am you haven’t pulled, it is probably better to surrender.

The hipster alternative for afterparties, where even more drugs are in play. Plenty of attractive girls there but you have to know how to work this type of club. A nicer atmosphere and better music but if you’re desperate to pull, you’ll probably go to Miks.

Weekday jokers: if you’re on the hunt for some sexy Russian girls during the week, here are two tips to make your life easier.

Chesterfield

Ladies night on Wednesdays means this place gets pretty packed with smashed teenagers and 6s and 7s. Don’t pull out the three-piece suit in here because it’s a “simpler” crowd. Definitely your best shot on Wednesdays.

If you haven’t pulled at Chesterfield, you can throw a Hail Mary and hit up Garage’s Black Music Wednesdays. Fills up really late but there are some cute Black Music groupies in here. Very small club. Thursday through Saturday they do afterparties and you have an excellent shot and swooping girls that are probably high.

Shishas Sferum

This is pretty much your only shot on Mondays and Tuesdays because they offer free or almost free drinks for women. A fairly low-class club where you should watch your drinks. As always the case in Moscow, there will be cute girls here on any day of the week but it’s nowhere near as good as on the weekend.

green tour triathlon

In a nutshell, that is all you need to know about where to meet Moscow girls in nightlife. There are tons of options, and it all depends on what best fits your style, based on the type of girls that you’re looking for.

Green Bay, Brown County optimistic about chances coal piles will move as White House official tours site

green tour triathlon

GREEN BAY - The Port of Green Bay applied for a $25 million federal grant to cover higher-than-expected costs to build a new port facility, a project key to ongoing community efforts to relocate the coal piles out of the central city.

The port in February applied for a U.S. Department of Transportation RAISE Discretionary Grant to close a budget gap in a plan to develop a new multipurpose port facility on the former Pulliam Power Plant site at the mouth of the Fox River. Cost estimates last fall showed improvements and infrastructure work on the site would cost about $48.7 million , about $19 million more than originally expected.

The RAISE grant program has about $1.5 billion to award in 2024.

Port Director Dean Haen said the community's application included letters of support from 40 businesses, legislators and Gov. Tony Evers that "make our case why it's very important to Green Bay." He said the grant is necessary to ensure construction starts in 2025 on the new port facility along the west shore at the mouth of the Fox River.

Senior aide to President Joe Biden tours Green Bay coal piles site

The port won't find out until summer whether it receives the grant, but a senior White House official toured the coal piles site during a visit to Green Bay on Thursday , giving local officials the opportunity to drive the point home that the city, county, and C. Reiss Coal Co. are "all aligned," said Green Bay Mayor Eric Genrich.

The tour, as much as the guest of honor, carried some import in itself — It was the first time C. Reiss Coal Co. representatives joined city of Green Bay and Brown County officials to tour the site and publicly discuss the relocation since the community first identified an opportunity to relocate the coal yard in 2021.

Keith Haselhoff, CEO of C. Reiss Coal Co. , met with senior adviser to President Joe Biden and Director of the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs Tom Perez, Genrich, Haen and other city and county officials. Perez also toured City East Center , a city- and state-funded affordable housing development and new home of the Brown County United Way .

Perez said the collaborative work of the city, county, business community, and C. Reiss Coal is often a key to securing grants, though he personally does not judge any applications.

"I see potential, remarkable potential," Perez said after touring the C. Reiss site. "There's obviously leadership here."

'We're optimistic this can be a success'

Haselhoff said C. Reiss continues to take its cues from the city and county as they pursue the money necessary to pull off the port expansion, relocation of C. Reiss and redevelopment of the coal yard site. But he said the company is optimistic at this point and continues to discuss its operational needs with the community partners.

"We're optimistic this can be a success," Haselhoff said. "New beginnings are always exciting."

The company has not said much publicly, but that does not mean it hasn't been closely involved, Genrich said. He called the company a "constructive partner" since the county and city got serious.

"They've never said, 'No, we're not interested,'" Genrich said. "They've been at the table figuring out how to make it work for themselves and the community."

Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach said the community and company efforts to date have positioned the region to, after 25 years of talks, "reimagine what the next 100 years will look like" for the riverfront site.

After 4 years of work, Green Bay, Brown County, C. Reiss have community close to plan to relocate coal piles

Brown County in 2021 paid $2.7 million to Wisconsin Public Service Corp. for the former J.P. Pulliam power plant site. WPS generated electricity on the 43.7-acre site from 1927 until 2018 when WPS shut down the two coal-fired power plants and began demolishing them.

The county saw the property as an opportunity to expand port operations in an industrial area of Green Bay on a site with room to relocate the coal piles, a goal community leaders have pursued for decades now. The riverfront site has been a coal yard since 1900, C. Reiss officials said.

Genrich has called the relocation a "once-in-a-city's-lifetime" transformation of the community's waterfront.

But first, the port expansion site needs a lot of costly work and port officials have so far secured about $30.8 million in funding:

  • $15 million in American Rescue Plan Act dollars via Gov. Tony Evers .
  • $10.1 million federal Port Infrastructure Development Program Grant .
  • $500,000 Idle Sites Grant  from Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. to help buy the property.
  • $3.2 million in Brown County American Rescue Plan Act dollars.
  • $2.1 million in WisDOT Harbor Assistance Grants.

The funding and engineering work to design the port expansion enabled the community to accelerate discussions with C. Reiss Coal Co. about relocating the coal piles.

In Depth: A port, a power plant and partnerships: How Green Bay and Brown County could finally relocate the coal piles

What's the Port of Green Bay expansion project?

The site needs improvements and upgrades on land and in the Fox River in order to potentially facilitate a variety of maritime deliveries and pickups. This site would be publicly owned in contrast to the 14 current port terminals that are privately owned and operated. The new port facility on its own could bolster the port's economic impact by as much as $87 million.

A major component of the project would involve dredging along the site and installation of a steel dock wall to enable ships to dock at the site. Construction plans include:

  • Dredge the Fox River along the site and install a steel dock wall to enable ships to access the site.
  • Construct a rail spur.
  • Fill in the docking slip on the Pulliam site.
  • Build a stormwater detention basin.
  • Add mooring facilities and crane pads for port operations.
  • Repair the sea wall.

While some road and infrastructure construction could start still this year, Haen said the community needs to win a RAISE Grant if it wants to start construction on the port-specific improvements in 2025.

Coal piles site could become housing, port site and ... Green Bay's Amtrak station?

City and county officials envision a port/industrial operation, housing and, possibly, an Amtrak station on the coal piles current site. The overall goal would be to activate the riverfront and develop a mix of uses that complements the Shipyard Redevelopment Area housing and recreational amenities coming together just north of the Mason Street bridge.

The northern 10 acres of the site, closest to Mason Street, would be marketed to housing developers.

The southern 20-plus acres would be used to create a new port site to facilitate some industrial uses in order to further bolster the port's current $217 million economic impact .

And with northeastern Wisconsin being awarded $500,000 to study passenger rail expansion from Milwaukee north to Green Bay , Genrich also pitched the coal piles site as a potential location for a new Amtrak terminal. He touted the site as well-located between downtown Green Bay and the rapidly developing Lambeau Field stadium and entertainment district.

"(A train station) can a lot of times be a pretty catalytic presence. We'd love to have a station located here as well," Genrich said.

Sunday at the Masters is about who will don the green jacket. This one was also about Verne Lundquist.

The esteemed CBS broadcaster made his final Masters call Sunday afternoon, his 40th and final Masters on the mic. Lundquist, 83, has voiced several iconic moments at Augusta National, including Tiger Woods' chip-in birdie from behind the par-3 16th green in the 2005 final round, en route to a playoff victory over Chris DiMarco.

The moment wasn't lost on Lundquist, whose dulcet tones have grown synonymous with the Masters’ storied history.

"When I leave here on Sunday, I'll have nine billion memories, and a choked-up voice,” Lundquist told ESPN earlier this week.

Lundquist made his final call at No. 16 for Sunday's final pairing of winner Scottie Scheffler and Collin Morikawa, after which play-by-play commentator Jim Nantz offered a tribute amidst soft music and slow-motion shots of Scheffler walking to glory.

"Verne wrote a book back in 2018 called "Play by Play," and the last line in the book that you wrote, Verne, I’m going to apply it to you. You said thanks, to borrow a phrase, thanks for the memories. Your voice has been a beautiful instrument. Thank you for a wonderful soundtrack for all of our lives," Nantz said.

A clearly emotional Lundquist responded with brevity: "Thank you so much, Jim. My honor. My privilege."

Woods and Lundquist shared a moment Sunday afternoon as Woods played No. 16, a testament to the five-time green jacket winner’s high esteem for the broadcaster.

“I’ve heard that call a couple times,” Woods quipped earlier this week, before turning serious. “That's what I grew up watching. I grew up listening to Verne. He has just an amazing ability to bring in the audience and describe a situation and just be able to narrate it in a way that is poetic but it's also – he describes it with emotionality. He just draws the audience in. It's amazing.

“And he made a nice call there at (hole) 16, and it's one that I've been lucky enough to … I will have that memory with Verne for the rest of my life.”

Lundquist worked nationally for ABC Sports from 1974 to 1981, CBS from 1982 to 1995, and TNT from 1995 to 1997, before returning to CBS from 1998 to 2016. He spent a decade-plus as the radio voice of the Dallas Cowboys, and he has covered everything from the NFL, NBA and Olympics to college football, basketball and even the game show “Bowling for Dollars.” He was lead play-by-play announcer for SEC football on CBS from 2000 to 2016, before retiring from college football broadcasting.

The Masters has been a constant. Lundquist took the mic at Augusta National in 1983, and he maintained the role aside from a two-year hiatus in 1997-98. His first Masters assignment was on the par-5 13th hole, the final leg of Amen Corner, and he was assigned to the 17th-hole tower for 1986 – after longtime 17th-hole announcer Frank Glieber, a close friend, died of a heart attack in 1985. Lundquist eventually moved to the tower at No. 16, the picturesque par 3 known as Redbud with water guarding the green’s left side and a mid-green ridge that tends to funnel balls toward a traditional Sunday hole location tucked near the water’s edge.

Augusta National’s par-3 16th tower was a fitting place for Lundquist’s Masters career to conclude, where he punctuated Scheffler's 10-foot birdie Sunday that extended his lead to four strokes, en route to his second green jacket.
