Evening walking tour through ancient Rome

Walk along the exterior of the Roman Forum

A super knowledgeable English-speaking guide

After booking this epic underground tour, you’ll hear from our friendly Travel Experts who’ll ask for your name and birthday. Each ticket is reserved specifically for you since you're a VIP. Don’t forget to bring your ID to the Colosseum to confirm your ticket! This product includes an entry ticket to the Colosseum + Underground + Arena, Forum and Palatine, for which our cost is 25 Euro per person.

The Best Views of Ancient Rome

Your evening begins with a walking tour through ancient Rome, discovering the iconic areas near the Colosseum such as the Roman Forum, Trajan’s Market, and Trajan’s Column. While most of these sites will be closed for the day, your guide knows all the perfect vantage points for taking jaw-dropping photos in the evening light. Learn all about how the epicenter of the Roman Empire used to look, who lived there, and why the Roman Forum was so important to the people of ancient Rome.

Piazza del Campidoglio

You'll stroll through the beautiful Piazza del Campidoglio—the first modern square in Rome that happened to be designed by Michelangelo. Yep, the same man who painted the Sistine Chapel and carved the magnificent David statue in Florence! In addition, you'll climb the massive staircase in front of the Palazzo Senatorio that was also created by the Renaissance master.

The Roman Forum

This amazing archaeological site was once the social and political heart of ancient Rome, where public gatherings took place, and the decisions that shaped the Roman Empire were made. While the site itself is closed in the evenings, your guide will lead you along the exterior for a great view if the sites inside, and you'll learn about the seismic events that once occurred here.

Trajan’s Market

As you get closer to the Colosseum itself, your guide will take you past more of Rome's ancient sites. Constructed sometime between 107-110 AD, and considered the oldest shopping mall in the world, Trajan’s Market epitomizes the sophistication of the Roman Empire. It stands as a multi-level structure at the north end of the Imperial Forum, which once housed around 150 Roman shops and offices.

Trajan’s Column

This 126-foot column tells the story of Emperor Trajan's victory over a barbarian army through 155 carefully-sculpted scenes. Like modern-day comic strips, battle depictions from the war between Rome and Dacia wrap around the triumphal column. After more than 1,900 years, the column is one of the most distinctive sculptures to survive the fall of Rome. Hear about how archaeologists have scrutinized the scenes to learn more about how the Roman army dressed and fought so many centuries ago.

Explore the Colosseum and Underground After Dark

You'll need to have your ID handy to enter the Colosseum Underground. Here a knowledgeable Colosseum guide will be assigned to you once you pass through security and arrive at the ticket office inside the Colosseum. But this is your chance to see the Colosseum like most tourists never will!

Arriving here in the cool of the night with your local guide and small group of no more than 24 people, you'll first enter the Colosseum Underground or the dungeons. Used for housing slaves and animals, the Colosseum Underground featured two levels, an elaborate networks of tunnels, and 60-80 elevators operated by up to 640 slaves. Explore this restricted, behind-the-scenes area with your local guide, and imagine the experiences that once unfolded down here.

The Arena Floor Experience

Finally, you'll walk next to the great Gate of Life, which was used by triumphant gladiators. This leads out onto the reconstructed Arena Floor where the savage games once took place. This entrance is different from the Gate of Death which earned its name because only the dead passed through that exit after losing their lives in battle. Standing on the Arena Floor under the glow of moonlight without the crowds is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

This is the first floor of the arena where you can appreciate a view of the arena glowing against the night sky. You'll stand right where emperors of Rome and the wealthy and noble classes would look down upon the bloody battles below.

You'll also have time to watch some of a short film that offers colorful historical details about the life of a Roman gladiator taken from the writings of ancient historians and the gladiators themselves. This night will be one to remember!

Informative but disorganised

Tour was interesting, however we were late starting and late to the Colosseum so the staff there were annoyed with our group and really rude to us.

Our guide, Fiona, was amazing! She had so much knowledge to share with us and was excellent with our kids (17, 12, 10). I highly recommend this tour. Not only did we enjoy Ancient Rome at night but we got to be in the Colosseum with only 20 people.

Frequently Asked Questions

What to bring?

Please make sure to bring your passport or government ID! We also recommend comfortable shoes for walking on uneven terrain. Bring sunscreen and a water bottle for hot summer months.

Is the Colosseum tour totally dark or will there be any lights where we walk?

For safety reasons, the Colosseum's lights will be on for the majority of your tour so you can see where you're walking. However, it's possible that the Colosseum will turn off the floodlights during a portion of your tour to show a video. Your guide will alert you before that happens as it is a part of the tour. Otherwise, you will still get to experience the ambiance of the Colosseum at dusk or dark, depending on the time of year.

How much walking does this tour involve?

You'll be walking throughout this 2-hour tour that visits archaeological sites only accessible on foot, and with somewhat uneven terrain. Remember to wear comfortable shoes. If you have concerns about your mobility, you might prefer to take a private Colosseum tour .

Is it always dark during the tour?

The sun sets at different times, but it can stay light until quite late in the summer. This means it might not be fully dark during your Colosseum night tour.

What happens if it rains?

We run our Colosseum tours rain or shine. If rainfall is extremely heavy, the Colosseum management sometimes closes the restricted areas for safety reasons. In this case, we will refund €18 back to each person.

Why can't I book a ticket for a child who is 6 years old or younger?

For safety reasons, children 6 and under are not allowed on night tours of the Colosseum.

Why do you need my full name and birthday?

The Colosseum management recently changed their rules, which means tickets will be reserved specifically for the actual ticket holder. We'll use your name and birthday to reserve a ticket just for you, so don't forget to bring your passport or ID to the Colosseum to confirm your ticket!

Can my tour be canceled or moved to a different day?

Yes. Colosseum Underground tours are exclusive and require additional effort, but we’re experts in this field and have a large staff dedicated to customer success. If we are unable to acquire tickets on your behalf, we will let you know at least 14 days before your tour date in which case we'll add you to a comparable tour or offer a full refund.

Does this tour include Roman Forum tickets?

It doesn't since the Roman Forum will be closed at this time of day (as will Trajan Market). However, you guide will walk you along these historic sites, so you'll still get a great view and lots of interesting stories about their history.

Will there be a guide with me the whole time?

Yes, this is a guided tour, but you will have two guides. The Colosseum management will assign one of their knowledgeable guides to these evening tours and escort you safely through the Underground.

Preview the experience

Tour description, tour the colosseum in vip fashion as you visit the highly exclusive underground area..

Feel the fear and hear the roar of the crowd above you on this once-in-a-lifetime Colosseum underground tour. Accompanied by a knowledgeable local guide, you'll have the opportunity to delve into the gory history of the gladiators while exploring the tunnels of the Colosseum underground and stepping out onto the famed arena floor.

While admiring the awe-inspiring architecture of the Colosseum, which has withstood the test of time for almost two millennia, your intimate group will be captivated by your guide's explanation of the truth behind the stadium and the games that once took place here—which isn't quite like what you might have seen in movies!

The cherry on top of your Colosseum underground tour comes as you step away from the crowds in the general access areas and make your way to the underground tunnels beneath the arena. Walk in the footsteps of gladiators who waited here before battle and hear stories about their real lives as you explore the underbelly of one of history's most spectacular stadiums. Our parent company, the Hornblower Group, worked with the Colosseum Archaeological Park to bring this experience to life, and we're so excited to share it with you as part of this once-in-a-lifetime tour.

As part of your experience, you'll explore one of the most incredible recent additions to the Colosseum: a brand-new exhibition that brings ancient Rome's most iconic figures to life. Marvel at a fascinating collection of artifacts and see firsthand how a gladiator's journey from the training area to the arena floor would have looked through lifelike digital projections.

You'll continue your gladiator's journey out onto the arena floor, which provides one of the most unforgettable vantage points of the ancient arena.

Hear tales that shock and entertain at the Roman Forum & Palatine Hill.

After your Colosseum underground tour, you'll experience the very heart of ancient Rome: the Roman Forum. This was the social and political heart of the empire, which stretched over more than 2.5 million square miles and was home to 65 million people.

Stroll beneath the Arch of Constantine and see the Senate house where toga-clad elites decided on behalf of all of those millions. Learn the story of the Temple of the Vestal Virgins, where a special cult of women kept Rome’s sacred flame alive. Your guide will share captivating tales of the ancient empire, full of love, betrayal, and larger-than-life characters (Caesar, Cleopatra and Mark Antony to name a few). They'll even come prepared with great visual aids and reconstructions to show you how it all would have looked 2,000 years ago.

Finally, at the Palatine Hill, you’ll discover the origins of ancient Rome. Legend has it that this is the spot where Remus and Romulus were found by the she-wolf and where they battled to decide who would have the privilege of building their own town. Hear how this mythical battle impacted the world you know today. We owe the ancient Romans more than you’d believe…

Benefit from privileged entrance, small groups and the best guides in the business on your Colosseum underground tour.

Traveling in small groups means you’ll find it easier to get around busy sites and to hear and engage with your guide. A good thing too, since they're bursting with captivating stories just waiting to be told! To help you get the most from the time you spend with us, we also have privileged access at the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, so you won’t have to wait in line. Because Colosseum underground tours are so limited, this tour often sells out months in advance—so book now to be sure that your place is secured!

A number of our Colosseum tours also have special access, including our Gladiator's Gate Tour , which gets you onto the Colosseum arena floor.

Please note: Due to high demand and restricted access to certain areas of the Colosseum, the entrance time for the Colosseum Underground may be granted between 9:00am and 4:00pm the day of your tour. We will confirm the start time of your tour about 30 days prior to the tour date.

This tour is fully refundable up to 7 days prior to the event. Within 7 days, this tour is 100% non-refundable.

A very thorough tour of the Colosseum and Palatine Hill & Roman Forum. I didn't catch our guides name but he was fabulous. He explained everything in depth as we went, explained the process along the way and also was happy any questions the group had along the way. Would highly recommend this underground tour.

Tour Description

Tour the colosseum at night.

There are many different ways to get the most out of your visit to the Colosseum. We offer different Colosseum tours which include a visit of Ancient Rome, because only by understanding the original backdrop of Roman society can you truly appreciate what the gladiator games were and make sense of their popularity. Amongst the various solutions we offer our  Colosseum at Night Tour  has an added value: you’ll have the unique opportunity to experience this imposing structure in the magical atmosphere of the Roman night - a totally different experience to seeing it during the daytime. During these exclusive evening openings, you will be amongst a small number of visitors able to witness the Colosseum at its most nostalgic, revealing the full sense of its past glory. The great artists of the Renaissance, such as Brunelleschi and Michelangelo, were fascinated by the cultural legacy of Imperial Rome – for them visiting the Colosseum was a sort of pilgrimage of classical art. Percy Shelley summed up his own visit to the Colosseum writing about its impressively huge walls topped by a forest of shrubs with wild olive and myrtle trees. It was moreover often at night that travellers would discover the Colosseum: it’s no coincidence that Henry James used a  night-time Colosseum  walk for an episode of his novella "Daisy Miller".

Our  night tour   of the   Colosseum  is a thrilling journey into the most fascinating arena of Imperial Rome. We’ll recount the life and stories that animated the largest metropolis of the ancient world, home to over one million inhabitants at the end of the first century A.D. Our guide will walk with you through the very crowd of Romans who made the gladiator fights so popular, recreating their lives in fascinating detail. You will learn about the incredible organisation that went into staging these highly orchestrated violent spectacles, framed by spectacular scenery and sophisticated machinery that totally captivated the Colosseum’s vast audiences.

Visit the Capitoline Hill

Our  Colosseum tour at night  begins in the magnificent Piazza del Campidoglio, a wonderful square built by Michelangelo that stands out as a symbol of the elegance and beauty of the Renaissance. This square is an ideal point to begin your tour, brilliantly showcasing the nostalgic inspiration that the artists of the Renaissance drew from the rediscovered sights of antiquity and the journey the city has taken through the centuries – from oblivion to re-birth. This beautiful piazza is also home to the fascinating Capitoline museums, one of the world’s greatest collections of ancient art.

Enjoy panoramic views over the Roman Forum

Our tour continues with a walk, or ‘passeggiata’ as the Italians say, down the Via dei Fori Imperiali. At night this is a truly wonderful experience - imagine that you’re in the midst of an outdoor museum, a fascinating time capsule bathed in moonlight beneath the stars. On one side are the majestic ruins of the Forum of Augustus and the striking concave architecture of Trajan's Market, dominated by the enormous columns of the Basilica Ulpia. On the other side of the Roman Forum we’ll walk up to the back of the Capitoline hill to see the stunning ruins of the Roman Forum from an elevated viewpoint - the Temple of Saturn, the Temple of the Vestal Virgins and other spectacular buildings all spreading out before us. Our guide will remain on hand throughout to help you understand the importance of these buildings in the context of Imperial Rome and the rituals that took place here as daily life unfolded all around them.

Visit the Colosseum beneath the stars

At the end of beautiful Via dei Fori Imperiali we’ll reach the iconic Colosseum. Our tour here begins on the first level, where you can take in the original structure of the building – built by the labor of hundreds of slaves who worked with travertine brought from quarries at nearby Tivoli. Enter the minds of the remarkable architects who gave birth to the project and somehow made the construction possible in just ten years. The Colosseum was the largest amphitheater of the Roman Empire, which at the time boasted more than 200 similar structures. The area where the Colosseum now stands was once the site of an artificial lake on the grounds Nero’s Golden House. The emperor Vespasian, a member of the Flavian dynasty, wanted to return the area to the Roman people; and so after Nero’s death the lake was filled in to make way for the amphitheater, with the giant statue of Nero in the guise of the sun god placed near the arena’s entrance. The statue stood at over 30m in height and it was its ‘colossal’ that gradually led to the amphitheater being known as the Colosseum. To learn more about the statue of Nero and his controversial life, we recommend our  Domus Aurea Tour .

Discover the secrets of the ancient world's most iconic edifice

The ellipse of the Colosseum had eighty numbered arches along the perimeter to facilitate the flow of spectators and this number was printed on the free ticket that the Romans were given before the games. The various entrances led the Romans through separate paths at different levels of the structure, arranged according to their social status. Along the minor axis of the ellipse were the portals for the authorities; between the underground passages lay the so-called "passage of Commodus," where the Emperor reached the Imperial podium, located near the present cross. Along the major axis was the Triumphalis entrance, where the procession of gladiators entered the arena accompanied by musicians. The Porta Libitinensis instead was where the gladiators would exit the arena, dead or alive. A series of underground tunnels linked the Colosseum to the support buildings that made the games possible. One of the most important of these was the Ludus Magnus, the accommodation and training area of the gladiators which you will also have the opportunity to visit.

From the Porta Libitinensis you will access the arena itself, today a wooden platform covering the underlying underground structures of the Colosseum that was in the past covered with layers of sand. The arena was enormous, and was often transformed into recreations of distant lands and exotic locations for the purposes of the games – satisfying an insatiable public appetite for novelty. The gladiatorial games were a carefully staged form of propaganda, reaffirming the absolute power of the emperor and at the same time demonstrating his generosity towards the people and Rome itself.

Explore the underground tunnels of the Colosseum at night

The night descent to the Colosseum’s underground is evocative to say the least. The underground, known in Latin as the hypogeum , consisted of a sequence of high-tech tunnels that were remarkable for the era. We’ll learn about the series of coordinated pulleys and gears that served the lifts for the arena: through access hatches, caged animals were brought up and down like cargo in a modern elevator. Our guide will help you unravel the wealth of archaeological evidence relating to the apparatus used, as well as show you beautiful contemporary engravings and mosaics found inside the Colosseum. You’ll also see how gladiators and animals were placed side by side in special cages - just imagine how they would have stared into one another’s eyes for the last time before their fateful ascent into the arena above. You'll also see that the labyrinthine underground area below the arena of the Colosseum was almost totally dark, illuminated only by the light of hundreds of gloomy lanterns - many of which have been found during archaeological excavations.

Unravel the story of the Hypogeum with our expert guide

Down here our guide will also give you the facts behind one the most intractable mysteries that has puzzled enthusiasts and historians of the ancient world for centuries. Were naval battles really recreated in the Colosseum? And if so, how was it possible to remove the underlying structures of the arena in order to make room for the ships' hulls? Contemporary historians do describe how recreated naval battles were staged as forms of entertainment, but they don’t specify exactly where or when these spectacles occurred. We know that when the Colosseum was inaugurated in 80 A.D., it hosted 100 consecutive days of shows; we also know that during this time the Colosseum’s underground areas were still under construction. At this stage they were in fact probably just wooden structures, and certainly not the mighty travertine structures that were built in a subsequent stage of the works – it was probably during this “beta phase” that the Colosseum hosted some these dramatic sea battles.

Get the real story behind the gladiators

First and foremost, you will discover just how varied the gladiator contests were. The most important were so-called ‘Munera’, fights between pairs of gladiators, and ‘Venationes’ - animal hunts that took place mainly in the morning. The hunts were followed by bizarre and tragic re-enactments of Greek myths such as the story of Icarus, in which men who had been sentenced to death were brutally massacred. The afternoon shows were dedicated entirely to the Munera, eagerly anticipated by the public. These involved exotic animals that were captured and brought to Rome from the most remote provinces of the empire. These shows represented an open window into the heart of the empire and its wonders, despite being from such distant lands, and provided a place where narratives and legends were created. The animals selected were of course usually fierce and fatal - tigers, lions and leopards for example. But milder beasts like giraffes, camels and elephants also made appearances.

Aside from the animals, the famous gladiatorial figures themselves provided a very effective form of propaganda. Many of the men came from distant lands and from Italy's isolated hinterlands. They showed the public archaic forms of fighting with strange weapons and combat techniques that the Roman audience would never have seen before. These would have been very curious and even bizarre sights for the public, making them very popular. We know all this from the hundreds of images depicting the games that have survived in the form of mosaics, funerary inscriptions and engravings on objects such as helmets and lamps. The word "gladiator" incidentally comes from "gladius," which meant sword in Latin.

Please note that the availability of timed entrances to the Colosseum's underground area are extremely limited. As a result, the exact time at which we we will enter the underground varies on each date.

Your tour will begin as you approach the Colosseum, exploring its architecture and discovering why the Emperor Vespasian took the unusual step of building an amphitheater within the city walls. With LivTours, you won’t have to wait in line for tickets, just a quick security check before you are standing inside the Colosseum, under the arches where spectators used to enter to experience the most brutal of entertainments.

This tour will take you to two restricted access areas inside the Colosseum: the underground area and the Arena Floor. You’ll understand what it was like for the gladiators underground in the semi-darkness, surrounded by terrified animals, waiting to be hoisted up to stand in front of the crowds. From the Arena Floor, you’ll have an incredible view of the entire amphitheater, as the gladiators did when they walked through the Gladiator Gate to the deafening roar of 50,000 cheering spectators.

And what about the people who came to watch the games at the Colosseum? In the part of the Colosseum open to the general public, you’ll visit the first tier and look down onto the arena, get your first glimpse of the Forum, and visit the Imperial box.

Outside, you’ll pass the Arch of Constantine and skip the line into the Roman Forum. With stories that educate and entertain, your guide will bring the complexity of more than 2000 years of history to life. You will see the most famous sites of the Forum, including the Arch of Titus, the Temple of the Vestal Virgins and the spot where Julius Caesar was cremated.

The guided tour of the Colosseum, including the hypogeum, was fascinating. Our guide Rebecca was both very knowledgeable and very pleasant and friendly, and her informed commentary enhanced the experience. It is not a cheap tour, but it was worth paying a higher price to be in a private group of just five people (maximum six) rather than following a red flag in a party of thirty or more. Particularly helpful was the use of radio receivers with an earpiece, enabling us to hear Rebecca chatting away without her having to shout over other people, and also enabling us to now and then disengage from the group by a few metres in order to take photos without missing any of the commentary. Email communications with LivTours before the day were good - although their website ought to make it clear that the Colosseum ticket also provides entry to the Forum without extra charge (ask the guide for the ticket on the day). Overall, highly recommended.

Best tour while in Rome

We booked the Colosseum and Forum tour with access to underground colosseum in August 2022. Barbara was our guide in a small group of 6 and was amazing! It was the best tour we had taken while staying in Rome, she was very knowledgeable about the Ancient city and was so nice in helping us stay hydrated and cool in the shade during the summer heat. I would recommend seeing the underground and will book again with Liv Tours and Barbara.

Great guide

We booked the Colosseum and Ancient Rome tour with LivTours. Ribal, our guide, was very knowledgeable and was a great guide who explained things really well. We also did the underground option which is a MUST!!! Small group which made things much more personal. Thankyou LivTours

Amazing tour

Dennis, our guide on the Colosseum tour, was incredible! His tour was the highlight of my trip! He was so detailed and made sure to answer any questions we had. He took his time to make sure we saw everything we wanted to see. I would highly recommend him! I would absolutely book another tour with Dennis and with LivTours.

Amazing experience

Our tour of the Colosseum and The Forum was truly amazing. What made our tour was our incredible guide Sabrina. She was highly knowledge and so enthusiastic about all aspects of the tour. Having the small group of only 6 people is a must. It gives a personal touch and learn so much more. Thank you for an amazing experience .

About Colosseum Underground Tour

When you visit the Colosseum, make sure to delve beneath its surface and follow the footsteps of the Gladiators on your Colosseum Dungeons Tour! The tour starts at the special entrance to the “backstage” of the arena.

First, you’ll descend into the Colosseum basement section. This is where your expert guide will show you its inner workings and mechanisms of how the chambers were lifted up and the Gladiators tensely awaited their fate. This is also the area where the animals were held to be released during the show. Tigers, elephants and other exotic creatures were made to fight other animals as well as the gladiators at the Colosseum’s crowded stands.

Following the Colosseum underground visit, your guide will take you up into the stands where spectators would sit and watch the bloodbath take place on the Colosseum’s arena floor. By now you’ll be able to understand the magnitude and aura of the amphitheater.

The Colosseum Dungeons tour comes with a skip-the-line access ticket to the Roman Forum, Ancient Rome’s civic center. Here you will walk along the Via Sacra , the same road where legionnaires walked as they returned home from war.

Admire the Palatine Hill and discover the story of violent conflicts carried out by rulers throughout the history of the Roman Empire. You will follow in the footsteps of emperors as you explore what remains of their ancient palaces and enjoy breathtaking views of Rome.

In just two and a half hours, you will learn the legend behind the birth of Rome and how it rose from a mere swampland to become the ancient world’s greatest superpower , all due to aggressive combat and superior organization. Your guide will lead you through the Ancient City where you will visit the oldest part of Rome. And, of course, the highlight will be when you descend into the Colosseum basement to explore what lies beneath.

Colosseum Underground Tour Highlights

This tour gives you a chance to step back in time and enter the Colosseum dungeons as you make your way underneath the Colosseum.

You will get to explore this incredible monument alongside an expert guide with a small group. With breathtaking views, sordid tales and humorous anecdotes, your guide will keep you entertained and engaged throughout the tour. The underground chambers of the Colosseum had various purposes. Some were used to store stage props while others housed exotic animals that were to be used in the gladiator battles.

Via this incredible Colosseum underground tour you have exclusive access to areas of the Colosseum that are often unexplored . You will get to stand where gladiators once did as they awaited battle and see where wild animals were kept during the show. The underbelly of the Colosseum was where all of the behind-the-scenes action would take place during a spectacle on the arena floor above. Hundreds of men worked tirelessly to move props and animals from the underground chambers to the elevator. Using the trap doors connected to elevators, the animals would be released into the arena. These surprises were much to the delight of crowds and to the dismay of those on the arena stage.

After your guide has taken you through the Colosseum’s underground chambers you will have a chance to explore the first and second level of the monument. As you walk the vast corridors your guide will detail how, in a matter of minutes, the Colosseum could fill the more than 50,000 seats. From the balcony on the second level you will have a breathtaking view of the Ancient City.

Book your Colosseum underground tour early to ensure your spot and explore the fascinating aspects of ancient Roman history. You will make memories that last forever with this once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience the iconic underground chambers of Rome’s Colosseum. Don’t miss your chance to see where it all began!

Visitor Highlights

  • The Colosseum Underground tour offers exclusive access to the most restricted areas of the Colosseum. These tickets have a tendency to sell out, so make sure to book early to ensure your spot.
  • As you descend into the Colosseum dungeons, your guide will point out the various chambers used to isolate the wild animals before sending them onto the arena stage.
  • One thing most visitors are surprised to see are the square arches used in the tunnel that leads to the underground elevator system. The clever pulley system that was used to operate the trap doors is also of particular interest.
  • The Colosseum dungeons were a flurry of activity during the shows on the arena stage. There would be a type of conductor that was directing all of the action and hundreds of men would be running around the area. All of the chaos was hidden in the Colosseum underground and the crowds above were blissfully unaware of what was going on.
  • With skip-the-line tickets you won’t have to worry about waiting in the ticket line. Your guide will lead you past the crowds waiting to get in and straight to your special VIP Colosseum dungeons entrance.
  • With a small group and individual headsets, you’ll find it easier to get around sites and hear interesting stories from your guide. Being part of a smaller group means you get to have more interaction and conversation with your tour guide. You can also ask questions of your guide as well as make friends with your fellow travellers.
  • If you are at all interested in Rome’s history, be sure to book a Colosseum dungeons tour that includes a visit to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. You will learn the legend of Romulus and Remus, hear stories about infamous emperors and be immersed in stunning ancient architecture .

First things first, it’s important to understand a little about this incredible structure’s history, and just why the Roman Colosseum is so important to Rome.

The Colosseum is one of the most famous structures ever built. Recognisable worldwide today for its worn, weathered stone and its distinct, crooked shape due to the collapse of some of its upper levels on one side, the Colosseum didn’t always appear as thus.

In its heyday it was a perfect sphere, adorned in gleaming white marble, with its now empty arches filled with statues. It was capped by a gargantuan, retractable velarium (or awning), which kept its 50,000 spectators shaded from the intense heat of the summer sun.

Built by Vespasian in 72 AD, the Colosseum was originally known as the Flavian Amphitheater and was the scene of many bloody spectacles.

Games were organised and paid for by the ‘editor’, often the emperor himself, and were used at the time to curry political favour with the people (it was free to attend) or to celebrate great events, such as victory in war.

A day at the games would kick off with the wild beast hunt, where exotic animals like elephants, leopards and lions would be pitted against one another, or against highly skilled hunters. Either way, the animals were always the real victims in this line up.

In 80 AD for the Flavian Amphitheater’s inauguration, the series of games held by the Emperor Titus resulted in the death of 9,000 animals.

Astonishingly, the statistics grew even worse – a mere 30 years later, Trajan held a series of games to celebrate his conquest of the Dacians, and sadly, some 11,000 animals were slaughtered.

At midday, it was time for public executions. Some of the condemned were set upon by wild animals; others had to fight each other with swords.

Sometimes, the deaths were even more elaborate, with scenes from Greek mythology reenacted, where the victims played the part of a character – such as the part of Hercules, who was burnt to death before becoming a god. Heart-warming stuff.

Finally, came the main event – the gladiatorial fights. Gladiators were highly skilled fighters. The best gladiators were rewarded with riches and fame, but they were also slaves, otherwise forced into servitude until their retirement age.

In the centuries following the fall of the Roman Empire, the Colosseum was used for a number of purposes. Primarily, it was used as a quarry and was stripped of its marble, statues and stone for other building projects.

In fact, much of the marble from Ancient Roman constructions was used to build many of Rome’s most famous churches and palaces, including the Vatican.

The Colosseum was also effected by earthquakes and lightning strikes and over time, its great hypogeum (the underground part that acted as ‘backstage’ for the games) was filled with rubble, and used as a store and dump.

The passageways above ground become home to blacksmiths, cobblers and priests and the Colosseum even found itself acting as a fortress for the 12th century Frangipane warlords.

Preservation of the Colosseum only really started in the 19th century, under efforts led by Pope Pius VIII.

In the 1930’s, in one of Mussolini’s less abhorrent moves, the hypogeum was cleared of earth as part of his drive for the glorification of Classical Rome and in the 1990’s, a large restoration project was undertaken.

Today, the Colosseum is one of Rome’s most important tourist attractions, along with being one of the most famous ones in the world to boot.

It stands as an important relic of Ancient Rome’s power and might, as well as evidencing its impressive engineering prowess. Receiving over 7 million visitors a year before the pandemic, it is also a huge source of revenue to Italian tourism.

The best time to visit the Colosseum is when it is at its quietest. There are two times of day that win out. The second quietest time of day to visit the Colosseum is first thing in the morning.

If you queue for security about half an hour before they begin operating, you’ll likely be amongst the first visitors to the Colosseum that day, so you’ll get a good 15 – 20 mins in relative peace and quiet before it starts to fill up.

The absolute quietest time of day is after hours, at night , when general admission has ended and when privately led Colosseum night tours are the only ones permitted inside.

You’re not side-stepping other tourists and there is really time to look at things properly, and to take it all in. It’s all quite thrilling, really, especially if you’ve visited the Colosseum before during the day and can attest to how busy it gets.

There’s an almost eerie calm and the only sounds you can hear are your group’s footsteps, your guide’s voice and the humdrum of distant traffic from beyond the Colosseum’s great walls.

Without the clamour of the Colosseum’s crowds during the day, your imagination can really fire into action and you can imagine the clang of swords, the excited roars of the crowd and all the glamour and gore that were part of a day at the games in Ancient Rome.

In my opinion, visiting the Roman Colosseum at night wins out to visiting during the day.

Colosseum by night tour review – my experience with TakeWalks

So you can understand what a night time Colosseum tour entails, the best way is to take you through the tour I took with TakeWalks, from start to finish.

The specific tour I took was the VIP Colosseum At Night Tour With Underground & Arena Floor , which is a circa 2.5 hour group tour of a maximum of 19 people. It might sound like a slightly larger group, but in a space as large as the Colosseum, it didn’t feel like there were that many other people at all.

We met outside a café close to the Marcello Theatre, where we were handed headsets so that we could hear our guide properly. Then, the tour began!

First stop on our Rome Colosseum at night tour was the Marcello Theatre, or Teatro di Marcello .

Located to the side of Piazza Venezia and close to the steps that lead to the top of the Capitoline hill and museum, if you haven’t seen the Colosseum before you may be forgiven for thinking that the Marcello Theatre is it.

Here, our guide Michela imparted some interesting facts about the theatre; including how it is still in use today as apartments and is under the ownership of a noble Italian family.

We then made our way across the road to the impressive set of steps that lead up to the Piazza del Campidoglio. Here, we learned how Michelangelo restored harmony to the square, making an awkward shape symmetrical by designing two of the palazzo that now form part of the Capitoline Museum.

We looked down upon the Roman Forum from the back of the square, learning about Rome’s origins and some of its most important buildings and streets during the time of Ancient Rome.

All these tales were regaled with great enthusiasm and humour and we then made our way down a winding road from the back of the hill towards the ground level of the Forum, and the Via dei Fori Imperiali .

While we made our approach towards the Colosseum, we stopped to take in some important sights along the way. We learned why local Romans don’t like the Alter of the Fatherland on Piazza Venezia, before pausing at the the former Trajan’s Market.

Here, I came to the conclusion that ancient Roman shopping and commercial centres weren’t a whole lot different to our own today!

As the dramatic, spot lit mass of the Colosseum loomed larger and larger as we made our way along the pavement, we made our penultimate stop of the night at the Basilica of Maxentius before making our way towards the entrance for the main event of our Roman Colosseum night tour – the Colosseum itself.

We checked in through security and Michela handed us over to archaeologist, Gianluca. Once inside the walls of the Colosseum, all TakeWalks Colosseum tours at night are led by an expert that specialises in Roman history and architecture.

We made our way down a gangway, moving deep inside the hypogeum on the lowest level of the Colosseum, which really made it feel like we were descending into the belly of a beast.

It is only when you are deep inside the structure when you really get a sense of the sheer scale and complexity in its design.

The last time I visited the Colosseum was before the hypogeum had been exposed and opened to the public – there had been a fully intact arena floor in place. Now, there is a completely different proposition on offer.

As part of a Colosseum underground night tour , visitors can now access the part of the Colosseum that formed the backstage to its great events and receive a behind the scenes look at how the spectacle that were the games was made possible.

The hypogeum is a veritable warren of passageways, lined with cells that would have held gladiators, captors and animals as they prepared to face combat on the arena floor above.

It’s absolutely incredible to be granted such access and I felt compelled to touch the walls that so many would have passed through and which are so significant historically.

From an engineering perspective, the Colosseum underground area is absolutely fascinating, too. Peppered in amongst the cells and passageways are horizontal channels and semicircular slices in the walls beside them.

The horizontal channels served as ancient elevator shafts and the semicircular spaces contained capstans, which would have been turned by hand to raise compartments and cages to the arena.

Some of these have been recreated, so you can see in person what these would have looked like. This elevator system would have raised men, animals and scenery to the arena floor, keeping spectators and fighters guessing as to where the next challenge may spring from.

At its peak, there were sixty capstans in operation – forty of which lifted animal cages to the arena floor, with the remaining twenty used to move scenery.

If the notion of the games in the way they are described seemed in any way fantastical to you before visiting the hypogeum, all doubts will be put to rest when you do see it, as you can see the level of ingenuity that went into the construction of the Colosseum.

Having taken in the mind-boggling hypogeum, we made our way to ground level for a more birds-eye look of maze that lay below, which really helped but into perspective how the whole event was orchestrated.

We learned about the experience at the games for the crowd and where different levels of society would have been seated.

I won’t go into too much detail in telling you all the facts learnt at this stage of the tour, but there was ample time to consider the Colosseum from where the gladiators would have stood.

It’s really not too different from our stadiums of today (and in fact, was probably a whole lot glitzier than then) and you can’t help but imagine the swell of the crowd, the excited roars and suspense-ridden gasps, together with the clang of metal on metal when taking it all in.

In my opinion, yes – a Colosseum by night tour is definitely worth it . You don’t have to deal with the daytime crowds and while the only way you can visit the Colosseum at night is with a tour guide, this is also an added bonus in itself as you’ll take far more from your visit than you would if visiting on your own.

So, is the Colosseum better at day or night? The answer to this one is not as straightforward and depends on whether you have visited the Colosseum before, want to combine the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill in the same visit, or want a more extensive tour of the Colosseum.

During the day, you’ll get to see the upper level of the Colosseum too (we didn’t visit this as part of our Colosseum at night tour) and while you’re not missing out on too much, you will miss out on a great view of the Roman Forum from some of the arches of the upper tiers.

To help you make your choice, I’ve included a list of pros and cons below.

  • You’re one of a very small few in the Colosseum at the time, so you escape the crowds of daytime
  • You’ll have to visit with a guide, which I think is a bonus in itself due to what you’ll learn
  • You have time to take everything in
  • You also pass through some other key sights of Ancient Rome
  • Perfect if you’re looking for a unique & memorable experience
  • You are tied to visiting with a guide, at a set time. This might not work for everyone.
  • If you wish to visit the Forum, you’ll have to do so separately and will need to purchase a ticket.
  • You won’t get to visit the upper levels of the Colosseum
  • Expense – as part of a guided tour, this is more expensive than visiting on your own.

I’d highly recommend the Rome Colosseum tour at night that I took with TakeWalks . TakeWalks are true experts in their field and offer great tours within Italy . I took this Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel tour with them during the same trip and it’s one of the best tours I’ve ever done.

All TakeWalk tours are led by a highly accomplished, English-speaking guide and many have qualifications in the fields of history, architecture, archeology and art history.

From my experience of TakeWalks tours to date, their passionate guides have brought their subjects to life, imparting stories about people and places with humour, intelligence and sensitivity where required, resulting in some unforgettable travel experiences.

My research (and subsequent experience) has led me to the conclusion that TakeWalks offers the best Colosseum night tour, but if, however, you would like to compare the TakeWalks tours against some other Colosseum by night tours , you can check out this tour by City Wonders:

Alternatives to a Colosseum night tour – some other ways to visit the Colosseum

Besides from Colosseum at night tours, the majority of Colosseum visits happen during the day. There are two main ways that you can visit the Colosseum during daytime:

  • Visit the Colosseum on your own in a self-guided way
  • Visit the Colosseum as part of a guided tour

If, having read my review above, you’ve decided that a self-guided daytime trip wins out over a night at the Colosseum, then I’d strongly urge you to a) visit first thing in the morning and; b) to purchase your tickets in advance.

This especially goes for if you are tied to visiting later in the day, as queues can grow very large and you’ll save yourself the hassle of joining the crowds by being able to just show up and waltz through security at your allotted time.

How to purchase skip the line tickets to the Colosseum

Tickets to the Colosseum also include admission for the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. I’d recommend that you purchase your tickets via Tiqets . Tiqets is a highly reputable ticket booking platform that I use regularly that provides entrance to iconic attractions and experiences.

It has a clean user interface and is great for booking tickets to multiple attractions in one destination, as you can keep them all in one place.

Booking skip the line tickets for the Colosseum

Your first option is to book skip-the-line tickets to the Colosseum. This includes entry to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill also.

If you’re planning on visiting multiple attractions in Rome, then it may make sense to purchase a combi-ticket that includes entry to a number of sights. The Roma Super Pass includes entry to the Vatican, the Colosseum and St. Peter’s Basilica.

There are several different types of guided tours of the Colosseum that you can do.

Underground + Roman Forum and Palatine Hill

Firstly, if you’re going to visit the Colosseum, then it’s highly likely that you’ll also visit the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, so try choose a tour that incorporates both.

Secondly, is a Colosseum underground tour worth it? I’d be inclined say that visiting the underground is unmissable – it’s the most interesting part of the Colosseum in my opinion – so I’d also choose a tour that incorporates both.

This TakeWalks tour fits the bill: Skip the Line: VIP Colosseum Underground Tour with Roman Forum & Palatine Hill

Gladiators Gate + Roman Forum and Palatine Hill

Offering an alternative Colosseum experience to the above, on this tour you will enter the arena via the Gladiator’s Gate, where combatants would have made their way onto the area floor of the ancient amphitheatre.

This is a special-access area that will be closed off to other visitors, from which you can really absorb the fascinating history of this truly iconic monument.

Again, TakeWalks runs a great tour: Gladiator’s Gate: Special Access Colosseum Tour with Arena Floor

Express Colosseum Tour

Lastly, is the best option for when you’re in a hurry. This express tour of the Colosseum is 1.5 hours long and focusses only on the famous monument itself. It also includes entry via the Gladiator’s Gate, from which you will get to experience the arena floor.

Visiting the Colosseum at night is an altogether different one to visiting during the day. The arena is quiet and still, devoid of the daytime crowds and you really get a chance to examine the structure and imagine what it was like in its heyday. It’s a thoroughly unique experience.
