The pristine beaches, natural attractions and no-passport-required status at these top spots make them appealing island escapes.

While many Americans assume they can't visit any Caribbean island without a passport, that couldn't be further from the truth. Thanks to the passport-free status of certain Caribbean destinations, you can easily visit tropical destinations with simply a government-issued form of identification, such as a driver's license or a birth certificate. And since passports cost $110 per person – and there's been an uptick in passport renewal requests this year – this distinction is crucial to note for families on a budget who are seeking a convenient and cost-effective vacation destination.

But that's not the only reason you'll want to visit one of these island hideaways. With white-sand beaches, mountainous landscapes, fascinating cultures and heart-pumping activities for thrill-seekers, each of these island destinations offers its own benefits and allures. Whether you have a passport or not, you should consider these tropical spots for your next getaway.

Just 1,100 miles southeast of Miami, you'll find the U.S. Virgin Islands – a tropical paradise comprised of three islands – St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix – filled with curvy roads that wind up and around dramatic mountains, pristine beaches and plenty of activities for both water enthusiasts and landlubbers. One of those islands is St. Thomas. While you're there, you can explore the bustling capital of Charlotte Amalie, take in the unbelievable views of St. John from Sapphire Beach or savor a high-end dinner in Red Hook, the island's entertainment hub.

Travelers seeking all-inclusive digs can check out Bolongo Bay Beach Resort on the southern tip of St. Thomas, and plenty of traditional hotels and vacation condos dot the island, offering spacious suites and striking views.

Just a quick ferry ride from St. Thomas sits St. John – an island that's mostly comprised of the lush Virgin Islands National Park. Explore the isle's secluded beaches, take a snorkeling lesson in one of the area's crystal clear bays or take one of the famous hikes around the island.

Guests seeking luxury should check out the Westin St. John Resort & Villas for a special treat, while everyday travelers can rent a vacation condo or stay at a luxury hotel like the Caneel Bay Resort, which sits on the southern part of the island.

As the U.S. Virgin Island's largest island, St. Croix has plenty to offer tourists. Not only is St. Croix known for its unique culture and array of festivals, but it's also renowned for its unspoiled beaches, fine dining, gambling and wealth of golf sites across the island.

Plus, you won't find a shortage of places to stay in St. Croix. If you're craving a hotel with a bit of history, consider The Buccaneer , the Caribbean's oldest hotel, which sits just south of Martel Bay. Plus, you can choose from hundreds of small hotels, cottages and vacations rentals that cater to different party sizes and travel styles.

Puerto Rico

With its own tropical rainforest, some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean and plenty of exciting activities for outdoor enthusiasts, Puerto Rico is one of the most convenient places to plan a vacation without a passport. From its bioluminescent bays to its hiking trails and cultural events, this island nation has something for everyone.

When in  Puerto Rico , you can span the world's tallest zip line at the famed Toro Verde Nature Adventure Park, eat delicious local seafood specialties at some amazing mom and pop diners and cafes and visit a real-life fort in scenic San Juan.

And when it comes to accommodations, El Conquistador Resort, A Waldorf Astoria Resort, offers some of the most luxurious rooms in Puerto Rico. And in downtown San Juan, you can find accommodations that span from the high-end Ritz-Carlton, San Juan to small local hotels and even boutique hotels. The Olive Boutique Hotel, for example, features expansive oceanfront views and a rooftop bar, and caters to younger guests with family-friendly amenities.

The Bottom Line

If you want to get a feel for the Caribbean without the headache of carrying a passport and going through customs, these four islands are the best place to start. Not only can you experience some of the most beautiful spots in all of the Caribbean, but you can do so without a lot of planning – and without waiting up to six weeks for your renewed passport to arrive in the mail. And with some of the world's most beautiful beaches, postcard-worthy scenery and plenty to do, you won't regret splurging for a getaway to these convenient – and hassle-free – locales.

The luxury destination of St. Croix is overflowing with Dutch influence and is renowned for its excellent diving and world-class underwater trails. There is plenty to see and do in the beautiful St. Croix.  Lovely beaches like Rainbow Beach and Pelican Cove Beach are as pretty as the names suggest. The main town of Christiansted has a picturesque boardwalk lined with fancy boutiques, restaurants and bars overlooking the water.

Water Island, US Virgin Islands

Water Island

Water Island is the smallest and most laid-back of the four US Virgin Islands, with less than 500 acres. Less than 200 people live there so everyone knows everyone. And when you arrive on the island, everyone is so friendly you instantly feel part of their tight-knit island.

Enjoy lazy days relaxing days on the beach, going kayaking, exploring scenic stretches of coastline, a fishing excursion, boat trip, or hiking. There are interesting remains of military fortifications to see and a little shopping that you might not get anywhere else.  While you probably don’t want to spend your entire vacation on Water Island, it is a nice place to spend a few days in combination with one or two of the other US Virgin Islands.

You can’t go to the neighboring British Virgin Islands, but those four gems in the US Virgin Islands have plenty to keep you entertained.

Watch out for the stunning fortresses of La Fortaleza and El Morro, that come with scenic ocean views. Also, walk along the Paseo de la Princesa bayside promenade and stop to take photos at the fountain and statues overlooking the water.

Puerto Rico, like many other places in the Caribbean, is blessed with countless beautiful beaches.

If we’ve learned anything over the years, it’s that some of the best things are in our own backyards. For Americans, that includes Puerto Rico and the three major territories of the U.S. Virgin Islands (St. John, St. Thomas, and St. Croix).

Although all of these places have great weather and beautiful beaches, each destination has its own distinct activities and attractions. Travelers can go bar hopping in Puerto Rico, diving in St. Croix, ziplining in St. Thomas, and hiking through the sprawling Virgin Islands National Park in St. John. (Cruisers visiting the Caribbean can even consider going beyond these destinations on a closed-loop cruise, which allows U.S. travelers to sail to some international destinations without a passport.)

If you’re ready for a weekend getaway or a weeklong recharge, check out this guide to the best islands in the Caribbean that don’t require a U.S. passport.

1. Puerto Rico

Each year, Puerto Rico sees millions of visitors, and many head straight to San Juan , the island’s capital. No wonder: Colorful Old San Juan is home to the 16th-century Spanish colonial fortress Castillo San Cristobal and other UNESCO World Heritage sites , and fantastic restaurants like Santaella or La Casita Blanca, where the tostones and mofongo are not to be missed. For after-hours drinks, San Juan’s most popular bar La Factoria is a standout: The James Beard Award–nominee is a maze of six different themed bars and dance rooms. For more options, check out El Batey ’s laid-back dive bar ambience or the Mezzanine’s cocktails and fine wines served on cozy balconies overlooking Old San Juan.

There’s also lots to do outside the capital city. Consider renting a car and driving out to El Yunque , Puerto Rico’s tropical rain forest, or head south to hike the Guanica State Forest . Rincon, a town on the island’s west end, is a surfer’s paradise with smaller boutique hotels scattered along the coast—travelers can catch a wave or a gorgeous sunset on one of its beaches . To experience one of Puerto Rico’s bioluminescent bays, head to Laguna Grande in Fajardo, about an hour east from San Juan.

Where to stay

  • Book Now: Fairmont El San Juan Hotel

The famed Fairmont El San Juan was completely renovated in 2017, but still retains many of its original details from its 1958 debut, including the 7,000-piece hand-blown chandelier in the hotel’s ornate lobby. The 388-room beachfront resort is less than 10 minutes from the Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport and offers four pools, cabanas with bottle service, and a stellar steakhouse, the Meat Market.

  • Book Now: El Pretexto

Located one hour from San Juan, El Pretexto is a mini farm and bed-and-breakfast tucked in the Cordillera Central mountains. The 2018-opened property offers bright and minimalist rooms alongside pop-up dinners, a wraparound deck, and a resident rooster named Santiago.

How to get to Puerto Rico

You can take an airplane or cruise ship to get to Puerto Rico. While the cruise ships stop at San Juan, there are plenty of direct nonstop flights from many hubs on the East Coast, including Hartford, Connecticut, and Tampa. There are even international nonstop routes from cities like Montreal and Frankfurt.

2. St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands

Sandy Point is the island’s most attractive white-sand beach, but it’s only open on the weekends. It also closes from mid-April to August for nesting sea turtles, so consider yourself lucky if you get a chance to enjoy this two-mile stretch of paradise. Other good beach options include Buccaneer’s Beach and Rainbow Beach near Frederiksted. Only 28 miles long and 7 miles wide, St. Croix can also be explored by horseback or on an ATV or dune buggy. For water activities, Buck Island Reef National Monument is a top choice for snorkeling and diving, and St. Croix’s bioluminescent bay, Salt River Bay National Historical Park , is best experienced at night in a glass-bottom kayak.

St. Croix is also full of historical sites and has two major towns to explore. Christiansted is a harbor-front district where visitors can tour the St. George Village Botanical Garden. Frederiksted, on the west of the island, is a cruise port home to Fort Frederiksted , a Danish 18th-century fort, and the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts .

After working up an appetite, head to Le Reine Chicken Shack for rotisserie-style chicken and delicious johnnycakes, or visit Savant for seafood right off the boat in an intimate patio setting.

  • Book Now: The Buccaneer Beach and Golf Resort

Overlooking the Christiansted harbor, the Wyndham-owned resort has a golf course, two pools, a water sports center, and access to three different beaches. Inside, guest rooms have huge four-poster beds and soaring ceilings; select rooms have balconies with direct views of the ocean.

  • Book Now: The Fred

The Fred , an adults-only waterfront property in Frederiksted, is one of the island’s newest properties since its opening in late 2017. Each of the 22 rooms is designed in bold colors, giving a modern contrast to the historic structures that house the rooms. Its hotel bar has a long list of inventive cocktails that include the Painkiller, a concoction of light rum, dark rum, coconut juice, pineapple juice, and orange juice.

How to get to St. Croix

You can reach St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, via direct flights from several cities on the U.S. mainland.

3. St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

For beaches, you can’t go wrong with the turquoise waters of Magen’s Bay or with Sapphire Beach, which has views of neighboring St. John. Take advantage of St. Thomas’s hilly terrain by hiking up to Drake’s Seat, a lookout spot that offers sweeping views of the Caribbean, or by ziplining at Tree Limin’ Extreme Zipline Park . Culinary options on St. Thomas range from Duffy’s Loveshack , a lively watering hole in Red Hook, to Old Stone Farmhouse , an elegant restaurant with an extensive wine list.

There’s lots to do in St. Thomas’s capital, Charlotte Amalie: Visit the Frenchtown Brewing Company for a tour of the microbrewery and a beer flight with four seasonal brews. Next, climb the historic 99-step staircase (technically there are 103 steps) in the city for fantastic views. Finally, set aside an hour to two for a self-guided tour of Fort Christian . The red- and green-hued 300-year-old fortress is the oldest standing structure on the Virgin Islands and has served as a prison, government building, and a governor’s residence.

  • Book Now: Bolongo Bay Beach Resort

One of the few all-inclusive resorts in the U.S. Virgin Islands, the 74-room Bolongo Bay Beach Resort still feels intimate. The guest rooms have views of either the ocean or the tropical gardens, and the resort sits on 1,000 feet of secluded beachfront. Hop aboard its 53-foot catamaran , Heavenly Days, for day sails and epic sunsets.

  • Book Now: Emerald Beach Resort

Emerald Beach Resort overlooks Lindbergh Bay, one of the most picturesque beaches in St. Thomas. All 90 guest rooms have an ocean view, and the resort has a partnership with JetskiVI for jet skiing and kayak rentals.

How to get to St. Thomas

St. Thomas is home to the capital of the U.S. Virgin Islands, Charlotte Amalie, which is also a popular cruise port. It’s the most developed of the three major islands and can be reached by regularly scheduled flights from the mainland.

4. St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands

Things to do.

About 60 percent of the isle is a designated national park , and travelers flock to St. John for its green, rugged landscape. The relatively quiet island is ideal for travelers who truly want to unplug. Visitors head to Trunk Bay for its powdery white sand, and Cinnamon Bay is ideal for water activities like windsurfing, snorkeling, and kayaking.

St. John has a collection of restaurants sprinkled around Cruz Bay, the island’s main shopping and restaurant district. The Longboard is a bright and airy Caribbean cantina serving tacos, sushi wraps, poke bowls, and half-price drinks during happy hour. Skinny Legs Bar and Grill is a long-standing dive bar good for a burger and a cold beer, and one of the best dishes on the island is the clam chowder at Lime Inn.

Book Now: The Westin St. John Resort Villas

One of the largest resorts on the island, the Westin St. John overlooks Great Cruz Bay. The 252-room family resort has a 10,000-square-foot pool and private beach—and ferry service from St. Thomas is included in your stay.

Book Now: Gallows Point Resort

Offering 60 one-bedroom villas, Gallows Point Resort is a short walk to all the restaurants and shopping in Cruz Bay. The hotel’s on-site restaurant, Ocean 362 , sources fresh ingredients from its garden beds, and the third-floor bar offers sunset views.

How to get to St. John

As the smallest and least developed of the three main U.S. Virgin Islands, St. John doesn’t have an airport. Instead, you’ll have to fly into nearby St. Thomas and ferry over to the island, which takes about 45 minutes.

America’s Best Island Vacations (No Passport Required)

Island getaways are typically reserved for all-inclusive Caribbean idylls, but we've got plenty of sensational stays right in our backyard. From the New England summer colonies favored by socialites and celebs, to miles of tropical sugar-sand beaches off of Florida's west coast, here are the best island vacations in the US of A.

A Brooklyn-based writer and editor, Chelsea's work has appeared in Matador Network, The Huffington Post, the TripAdvisor blog, and more. When not planning her next trip, you'll usually find her drinking way too much iced coffee (always iced—she’s from New England) or bingeing a Netflix original series.

Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts

Martha’s Vineyard has made quite the name for itself as a New England summer staple for affluent locals, socialites, celebs, and democratic bigwigs-alike (we see you, Obamas and Clintons). That said, what’s all the hype about? Well, barring a lengthy laundry list of accolades, MV wows with high-end gastronomic options, a rich history and pure scenic beauty throughout it’s six towns. Food options here are endless, but ask around and you’ll find Among the Flowers Cafe , in Edgartown, is the place for breakfast and you can guess what Larsen’s Fish Market, in Menemsha, is good for. This summer, for a midnight snack, traipse to the actual back door of Martha’s Vineyard Gourmet Café & Bakery for Back Door Donuts . The treats are served from 7:00 pm to 1:00 am on the dot. Ride that sugar high through till morning when you storm the island by moped. Wednesdays and Saturdays are reserved for sifting through vintage finds at the Chilmark Flea Market , while the shops and gingerbread cottages on Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs are always there when you have time. Keep things cozy at the Harbor View Hotel , a collection of seaside-chic cottages just a stone’s throw from the historic mansions of downtown Edgartown.

Marco Island, Florida

Not far from the Everglades and Naples, connected to the mainland by a series of bridges, Marco Island is the largest developed chunk of Florida’s “Ten Thousand Islands.” Poised in the Gulf of Mexico, it has all of the Floridian mainstays holiday-seekers are accustomed to finding: luxury resorts, sun-washed beaches and a tropical climate that hovers in the 80s, rarely dipping into the 50s, even in the dead of winter. For an Everglades experience without actually stepping foot in the Everglades, hit the mile-long boardwalk at Collier-Seminole State Park . The system of mangrove swamps and salt marshes is home to rare flora and fauna like the royal palm, American alligators and crocodiles, and Florida black bears. For a gourmet bite, La Tavola serves up a mean grilled Spanish octopus with andouille sausage, red peppers, fig balsamic, fresh herbs and greens. When it comes to choosing a stay, your pick is between a slew of well-known mega-resorts, and tiny inns, but you’ll be comfortable whether you retire at the massive Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort Golf Club & Spa, or mini Marco Island Lakeside Inn .

Nantucket, Massachusetts

Nantucket joins Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts’ roster of highly-flocked to summer colonies. Thirty miles off the coast of Cape Cod, the seaport stunner doesn’t have to clamor for attention, but just sits back and reels it all in with its perfectly-worn wharves, shingled family homes, cobblestoned streets and sandy dunes. Drop your bags in your own apartment-style loft at the harbor-front White Elephant and take to the island by bike , or board with a little aid from the Nantucket Island Surf School . Energy spent, direct your remaining attention to Oran Mar where exquisitely plated, incredibly colorful dishes are the name of the game. Not ordering the entire menu is an exercise in self constraint, but we wouldn’t fault you for going for a couple plates, say the garlic-laced roasted Pocmo Meadow oysters, black truffle bucatini and Berkshire pork belly.

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

Just 45 minutes from Savannah and Beaufort, this low-country island is all about southern hospitality. Between hitting the links – the resort town is lauded for its world-class golf courses (it does host the PGA tour Heritage Golf Classic) – you can hit the sands at Coligny Beach , or stop in Harbour Town , marked by its eponymous and iconic red and white-striped lighthouse, to take a gander at the yacht basin and peruse the shops, ice cream cone in hand. When it comes time to really chow down, a l ow-country inspired meal at Live Oak is always the answer. If you catch them during Saturday or Sunday brunch, you can recline with $8 unlimited Mimosas and $10 bottomless Bloody Marys (living in NYC, it pains me to write this). Otherwise, start with skillet bacon cornbread with pimento cheese, honey butter and jalapeno marmalade, then go for something classic like shrimp and grits or southern fried chicken. In the Palmetto Dunes neighborhood of Hilton Head, fresh off of a $17 million redesign, the Omni Hilton Head Oceanfront Resort waits with spacious, brightly-appointed suites and 11-miles of lagoon ready for kayaking.

Maui, Hawaii

Ask nearly anyone and they’ll tell you that Maui doesn’t just land the list of America’s most beautiful islands, but the world’s, too. Luxury resorts and plush guest homes meet every watersport imaginable (the diving is a must) sprawling gardens right on the ocean’s edge, volcanic landscapes pocketed by dormant craters, and the food isn’t too shabby, either. At the Lumeria Maui , a restored, elegant 1909 estate, six manicured acres of lush garden cocoon yoga, meditation, and gardening classes along with an expansive indoor/outdoor wellbeing center and saltwater pool. For a meal that hasn't failed to impress locals and visitors for the last 26 years, head west to the Lahaina Grill . A menu spilling over with contemporary bistro cuisine means you'll be eating your weight in ahi poke, crisp Shanghai spring rolls, and Kona coffee roasted rack of lamb.

Mackinac Island, Michigan

Stepping onto the resort Mackinac Island is like stepping back in time. The 3.8 miles of land floating in Michigan’s Lake Huron is home to less than 500 year-round residents, but that's just the start of its small town feel. Visitors are instantly captivated by the unmistakable Americana and early 1900s atmosphere the island evinces, due in large part to horse buggies (the island’s car-free), monumental historic hotels (that happen to have the longest porch in America ) and a Main Street brimming with the bright, columned facades of general stores, inns, and artist markets. Despite a count-them-all-on-one-hand populace, the island has a wealth of tasty restaurants. The waterfront patio at the Pink Pony slings a pretty good bistro burger and rum runner (that’s the talk of the island). If you’re looking to keep the night going, the Cuppola Bar at the top of the Grand Hotel is what follows. Grab a drink and sit back to enjoy the live music, but beware, the one-of-a-kind Carleton Varney decor might just steal the show (get a load of the chandelier). Head home at the end of the day to The Inn At Stonecliffe , a Tudor Revival mansion kitted out with new and old-world touches like original stained glass windows, clawfoot tubs and a former-library-turned bar.

San Juan Islands, Washington

The San Juan Islands off the northwest corner of Washington state comprise some 172 land masses and reef bodies, but it’s Orcas, Lopez, Shaw and San Juan (singular) that hold all the goods. Hopping a quick ferry or flight from Seattle, Bellingham, or Vancouver, you’ll be mesmerized by the archipelago’s rugged Pacific Northwest landscape – subalpine forests, rocky beaches and reef-studded bays. Your trip calls for a stay at the Friday Harbor House in San Juan where after days of exploring the island’s thriving art scene, covering the streets of the seaport inch by inch (it’s only a mile) and visiting the Pelindaba Lavender Farm during the “peak of purpleness” (July and August), you’ll lounge fireside in your own oversized tub, taking in the island’s bluffs through your room’s picture window. Dedicate a day to the San Juan Islands Scenic Byway which connects the beaches, alpaca farms, mountains, harbors and vineyards of the archipelago’s many hamlets and fit in a whale watching excursion as the island's are famous for their three pods of killer whales. When hunger strikes, find a table at Coho Restaurant where seasonal Pacific-style meals are spun with a Mediterranean twist.

Block Island, Rhode Island

Just about 14-miles equidistance off the coasts of Montauk and mainland Rhode Island, Block Island is an enchanting summer destination chock full of New England-style inns, B&Bs and guesthouses. Ringing in at around 9 miles – but with 17 beachy miles of coastline – the island tempts guests with bicycling, yachting, specialty boutiques and art galleries. Since the tiny slice of land is home to only 900 year-round residents, it maintains a level of rustic simplicity with steep ocean bluffs, winding roads and stoic 18th-century lighthouses (which were once architectural marvels). Scarf down the freshest lobster rolls at Southeast Light Delights on the Mohegan Bluffs near Southeast Lighthouse , or if you’re anti-seafood, try out a ricotta grilled cheese on sourdough, stuffed with local blueberries, blackberries and strawberries, and then drizzled with honey. For a sweet stay that’s removed from the 24/7 comings and goings of downtown – but don’t worry, you’re only a mile off the beaten path – tuck your things away at waterfront Payne’s Harbor View Inn . The three-story retreat has just 10 rooms and 3 grand balconies with sweeping views of the ocean and New Harbor.

Catalina Island, California

Santa Catalina, or just Catalina, as it’s known to those who frequent it, has everything the jetsetting elite are keen on (Marilyn Monroe herself once called the island home) – namely swaying palms, white sandy beaches, exquisite dive sites, and a soothing island vibe. Getting there is a cinch, with ferries regularly leaving from Long Beach, Dana Point, Newport Beach and San Pedro, and once you’re on the island, in main town Avalon, which is only a mile, you’ll see everyone gets around on foot (no joke, there’s a 14-year wait list for residents to get a car on the island). Take lunch at the Inn on Mt. Ada where your meal will be met with panoramic views of Avalon Bay, the island’s blissful backcountry and a clear view of chewing gum-tycoon William Wrigley Jr.'s mansion. If you’re planning an overnight, Snug Harbor Inn should serve as your temporary home base. The Cape Cod-style charmer is a favorite among celebs trying to avoid having their vacay splashed across the homepages of TMZ and Perez Hilton.

20 Tropical Places to Travel to Without A Passport

islands to visit with passport

Americans, there are many tropical places to travel to without a passport. Thankfully, you don’t have to travel internationally to find sandy beaches, palm trees, and exceptional weather. Get inspired for your next vacation destination with these no-hassle tropical getaways.

20 Tropical Places to Travel to Without a Passport

These days international travel is becoming more and more of a hassle. Between entry requirements, pre-flight documentation, and unreliable airlines, travelers just want a hassle-free vacation. These destinations are all open and easily accessible to American travelers, no passport or costly visas are needed.

When you’re ready to book your flight, follow these three easy steps to get the best price.

Below are the 20 best tropical places to travel to without a passport.

1. Key West, Florida

Get a Caribbean-inspired vacation without leaving the mainland. Key West is so far south that it sits closer to Cuba than it does Miami. Key West is also home to the third-largest coral reef in the world and the largest in North America.

islands to visit with passport

Travelers can get up close and personal with Florida’s marine life such as dolphins, turtles, and manatees while snorkeling, kayaking, and diving. However, the most popular tour is the Key West Sunset Sail with a full bar, live music, and hors d’oeuvres.

No passport necessary destinations have helped Americans travel during the pandemic. – The Budget Savvy Travelers

Tip : Whether you’re visiting Key West, Hawaii, or Puerto Rico, make sure to visit Sailo.com . Basically, it’s the Airbnb of boat rentals. Find and book the perfect boat rental for an afternoon or charter a yacht for a week with a licensed captain, all in a matter of minutes.

Key West maintains its popularity because it checks off so many boxes for the ideal getaway —beaches, nightlife, a walkable downtown strip, and numerous exciting tours and attractions.

3 Most Popular Tours in Key West

  • 🌅 Sunset Sail with Full Bar, Live Music & Hors D’oeuvres
  • 🤿 Florida Reef Half-Day Snorkeling Excursion
  • ⛵ Sunset Dinner Cruise with Tropical Buffet Dinner

🏨 Recommended Key West Accommodation >   The Marker Key West

2. Catalina Island, California

Missing the sunny beaches and Mediterranean breezes of the Greek Islands? Consider ferrying to Catalina Island to pretend you’re in Greece for an island getaway. With a similar temperate climate, the holiday experiences are surprisingly quite similar. Upon arrival, warm waters, white-sand beaches, and palm trees welcome all visitors.

islands to visit with passport

Catalina Island is located just 22 miles off the Southern California coast. The idyllic location is so beautiful that over 500 movies were filmed here. Some of the most notable productions include Jaws, Treasure Island, Waterworld, and The Hunt for Red October.

A day on the island typically consists of snorkeling, sunbathing, and sipping on cool cocktails. However, there are plenty of organized activities too. For example, there are boat tours, sunset cruises, semi-submersible vessel tours , and wildlife eco-adventures. Those who like to stay active can hike, golf, kayak, or even go zip-lining.

3. bahia honda key, florida.

Bahia Honda is an island located in the lower Florida Keys, at mile marker 37. This particular key is special because it is often uninhabited, providing the ultimate feeling of an escape to a tropical deserted island. In reality, the key’s serenity is due to it being home to Bahia Honda State Park . Although there are fees to enter the state park, it keeps the masses away and allows the beaches to stay more secluded.

Bahia Honda State Park offers three beaches: Calusa Beach near the Bahia Honda Bridge on Florida Bay, Sandspur Beach, and Loggerhead Beach on the Atlantic Oceanside.

islands to visit with passport

The state park’s token attraction is Sandspur Beach. It stretches for 2½ miles and is popular for swimming and snorkeling. Some consider it the most scenic stretch of the coastline of the Florida Keys. Loggerhead is a great beach for families because off-shore reefs calm the waves and the bay’s long shallow sandbar.

The island paradise also features an oceanside trail that weaves around a lagoon, picnicking sites, and a long, paved cycling path. Boat trip tours to snorkeling trips to the reef are popular excursions.

Stay here : Captain Pip’s Marina & Hideaway (from $146)

For the record, this is the one thing in our luggage that keeps us from losing our minds.

4. st. thomas, u.s. virgin islands.

Unlike the British Virgin Islands where a passport is needed, the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) is an organized, unincorporated territory of the United States. This means that it follows U.S. law and Americans are welcome with no passport needed. It also helps that the currency is the U.S. dollar, making travel that much easier.

Popular Marco Island attractions include Collier Seminole National Park, the Briggs Nature Center, and the Florida Domes. Another point of interest is the Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refugee .

Marco Island is the largest and only developed island in Florida’s Ten Thousand Islands. Despite the name, the small islets number in the hundreds. These sandbars and uninhabited islands sit between mangrove estuaries and are full of extraordinary Florida wildlife. Accessible by boat, kayak, and canoe, the cost to explore is free.

Stay here : Marco Island Lakeside Inn (from $219) or Marriott’s Crystal Shores (jaw-dropping!!)

19. Vieques, Puerto Rico

Vieques is one of the last destinations that remain like the Caribbean of the past—lush, uncrowded, quiet, and undeveloped. The reason the island remains a blissful escape is that it is located 7 miles off the Puerto Rico coast.

islands to visit with passport

Subsequently, when most tourists plan a vacation to Puerto Rico, many don’t opt to take the costly second 10-minute flight to Vieques or subject themselves to the more budget-friendly but unreliable ferry. This slight separation of mainland Puerto Rico from Vieques helps keep the offshore island an exotic, unique escape.

Travel tip : Out of the five bioluminescent bays in the world, Puerto Rico hosts three of them . Two are located on the mainland and the most famous one is located in Mosquito Bay on the southern coast of Vieques.

  • Budget: Casa de Tortuga Guesthouse (pool from $115) or Isla Hermosa Guesthouse (great central location from $107)
  • Mid-Range: The Vieques Guesthouse (close to the beach from $156)
  • Luxury: Finca Victoria (pool, free breakfast, beautiful property from $199)

St. Croix is the largest of the US Virgin Islands. The entire island lies in the Caribbean Sea, essentially making it one of the ultimate tropical places to travel without a passport. Of course, it has all the warmth and beauty of a tropical destination.

islands to visit with passport

What sets St. Croix apart from the other U.S Virgin Islands is its distinct history and cultural heritage—apparent in its cuisine , architecture, national parks, music, and traditions. One of the most significant events in St. Croix’s history was the landing of Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to America in 1493.

Stay here : Sand Castle on the Beach (from $219)

US Territories No Longer Passport Free

While there are plenty of tropical places to travel to without a passport, unfortunately, there are still a few destinations that are not allowed. For instance, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands are territories of the United States, and Americans must now present passports and onward tickets upon arrival.

My husband and I had cruise credit to use up and since we got the original vaccine from Pfizer, figured we would go ahead and try to use it. We had to do two COVID tests, one 48 hours before and one on the day of. Several ports turned us back for made up reasons (the cartel took over the town, it’s too dangerous!). And all of them required masks even outdoors in the blazing sun. Bahamas have armed police enforcing masks. Puerto Rico made the entire boat disembark and go through customs… it just felt hostile everywhere we went. Don’t recommend. I’m starting a travel blog also, just my personal experiences, if you would like to check it out, I would love that.

No Passport Required: 7 Incredible Island Getaways in the U.S.

author image

See recent posts by Erin Raub

We love to dream about incredible vacations in far-flung locales. It's all so alluring: tropical weather, international cuisine, and never-seen-before sights, offered in exotic destinations with even more exotic languages. Swoon.

But that allure fizzles quickly, as soon as we start researching prices. Because often, before you've even gotten past the airfare, your credit card is straight-up cowering in a corner. And even though you've only practiced how to say, "does this have snail in it," you're already frustrated with the language barrier.

Friends, welcome to what we call "No Passport Required" travel: vacations to absolutely amazing places you can visit with just your U.S. driver's license. Because lest you forget, there are tropical islands and lakeside locales and seaside towns to be found here in the U.S. -- all perfect for your next big trip. To get your research started, here are seven of our favorite islands in the U.S.

1. Puerto Rico

Villa Montana Beach Resort in Puerto Rico; the CDC advises that pregnant women do not travel to Puerto Rico.

Beach at Villa Montana Beach

It’s probably no surprise that Puerto Rico makes our list of U.S. islands: it’s spectacularly beautiful, it’s just a few hours’ flight from the East Coast, and it’s a U.S. territory. And while the  Isla del Encanto feels like another world (or at least another country), the official language is English and the U.S. dollar the currency. In this scenic port-of-call, a salty island breeze perfectly compliments the 80-degree average year-round temperature. We love the miles and miles of white-sand beaches, Spanish colonial architecture, and breathtaking natural wonders, including a beachfront rainforest and phosphorescent bay.

2. Nantucket Island, Massachusetts

View of The Wauwinet from the beach

If you like a little more New England in your island, you’re going to love the small enclave of Nantucket . Thirty miles south of Cape Cod and decibels quieter than Martha’s Vineyard, its popular neighbor, Nantucket is an island escape in the northeastern U.S. With more than 100 miles of sandy coastline, a ridiculously quaint downtown, postcard-perfect colonial architecture and the softest, most photogenic sand dunes, Nantucket is one charming addition to our list.

3. Florida Keys

Beach at Chesapeake Beach Resort

Slow down. No, slower. There you go — total tranquility. Because in the Florida Keys – also known as the “Winter White House,” thanks to its popularity with U.S. presidents — life moves at its own pace. Slowly, in other words. It’s just the right speed to leisurely stroll miles of powder sands, ankle-deep in aquamarine sea. For spending an entire day diving or exploring or sunbathing or swimming. For visiting art galleries or dolphin-watching or fishing or restaurant-hopping. For doing everything or nothing at all.

Pro Tip:  For a less kitschy, more authentic Florida Keys experience, stay somewhere other than Key West or Key Largo .

4. Mackinac Island, Michigan

You may think you know the tropical side of our lovely nation, but you haven’t seen paradise until you’ve visited the U.S. Virgin Islands . This Caribbean trio —  St. Thomas , St. Croix , and St. John , to be specific — are home to transparent turquoise waters, lush greenery and pillow-soft beaches white enough to be called pearlescent. And did we mention, the weather in the U.S. Virgin Islands is perfect: 77 to 83 degrees on average, and slightly warmer (86 to 91 degrees) at the beach — just the right inducement to take a dip in the Caribbean. And if you like shopping, the capital city of Charlotte Amalie offers excellent duty-free goods.

6. Outer Banks, North Carolina

If you grew up on the East Coast, chances are you have at least heard of North Carolina’s Outer Banks . But for those who live mid- or west-, and for those who haven’t ever visited, welcome to a slice of pure, seaside Americana. The Outer Banks are a nostalgic string of islands enamored with their own mountainous sea dunes, iconic lighthouses, wide beaches and fabled history. And what a history it is: not only did the pirate Blackbeard fight his last battle on Ocracoke, and not only did the Wright Brothers take their first flight at Kitty Hawk, but the OBX are also said to have been home to the Lost Colony — the stateside version of Atlantis, if you will.

Visiting the Caribbean Without a Passport

islands to visit with passport

J Aaron Farr / Flickr /  CC BY 2.0

U.S. travelers to the Caribbean really should  get a passport as soon as possible ; it's the best way to avoid hassles when reentering the U.S. But if you want to travel soon and don't have a passport, don't worry: It's still possible to have a fabulous Caribbean vacation even if you don't yet have a valid passport. Here are your options for traveling to the Caribbean with just a birth certificate and driver's license or another form of primary ID.

No Passport Needed to Visit Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is a Commonwealth of the United States, making travel here just like crossing a state border: no passport is required for U.S. citizens; just a government issued form of ID. Plus, you don't have to clear customs!  Puerto Rico  has the best air service in the Caribbean, with international flights into San Juan, Aguadilla, and Ponce, and can provide a wide range of experiences from the urban sophistication and history of  San Juan  to the wilds of the  El Yunque rainforest . Add in a side trip to  Vieques  and/or  Culebra , and you'll get to experience three Caribbean islands without ever leaving the U.S.

Visit the U.S. Virgin Islands With Just a Driver's License ID

The U.S. Virgin Islands—St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix—are U.S. territories that are passport-free for U.S. citizens. St. Croix, the largest of the islands, has two major towns (Christiansted and Frederiksted), a rainforest, and preserved historic plantation homes. Bustling Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas is the most popular cruise port and shopping destination in the Caribbean, while two-thirds of St. John is preserved as a tropical national park.

*Note: when exiting the Islands, you may need to show a valid form of government issued ID before boarding your flight back to the mainland U.S.A.

The  British Virgin Islands  are a mere stone's throw away from St. Thomas and St. John, and accessible by ferry or private boat. However, you will need a valid U.S. passport to visit the BVI.

Take a "Closed Loop" Cruise

You can still cruise to the Caribbean without a U.S. passport if you are a U.S. citizen, but only if you take what is known as a "closed loop" cruise. That means that your cruise ship needs to start and end at the same U.S. port. The good news is that most cruises originating in the U.S. operate as closed loops (the exception would be something like a  Panama Canal  cruise that starts in Miami, for example, and ends in San Diego).

However, there are a couple of caveats. Some Caribbean countries— Barbados ,  Guadeloupe ,  Haiti ,  Martinique ,  St. Barths ,  St. Martin  (but not Dutch St. Maarten), and  Trinidad & Tobago —will require you to have a passport to enter or exit. Always check with your cruise line first to see if this applies to any of your ports of call unless you want to be stuck on the ship. Also, if something goes wrong with your cruise and you have to fly home, not having a passport could be a problem.

If you're taking a closed-loop cruise without a passport you'll need proof of citizenship and, if you are over age 16, a government-issued photo ID. But again, your best and safest route is to spend the money to get a passport before you travel.

Get a U.S. Passport Card

Think of a  U.S. Passport Card  as something falling between a Passport and a government-issued photo ID. It costs half the price of a passport, but can only be used for land and sea entry into the U.S. from  Canada ,  Bermuda , the Caribbean, and  Mexico . It cannot be used for air travel.

Practically speaking, that makes it not much more useful than a driver's license for Caribbean travel. Technically, you could use it to cross the Mexican border and drive to the Riviera Maya. But that's 1,400 miles each way, so we're pretty sure you'd rather get the passport and book a flight, instead!

16 Best Islands In The USA You Can Visit Without A Passport

November 23, 2021 //  by  Follow Me Away //   Leave a Comment

Have you been wondering what some of the best islands in the USA to visit are? On this list, we’ve found our favorite USA islands to visit, and you don’t need a passport! The US is a large country, so it’s no surprise that there are quite a few islands in the United States as well. You can explore tropical islands, Midwestern islands, and even islands in the Northeast or Southeast.

All of these amazing islands are considered US soil, so you won’t ever need a passport to visit them. Some of them are really close to mainland USA, and others do require a bit longer flight. But that also depends on where you’re traveling from. We’ve tried to find the best American islands throughout the whole country. So no matter where you are located, you’ll find an island in the USA to visit near you.

Some of our favorites are the many tropical islands in the USA. But if that’s not your thing, don’t worry. There are plenty of different types of islands in America. That means that no matter what kind of island vacation you’re interested in, there’s a perfect island getaway for you. So, let’s take a look at 16 of the best islands in the USA!

A man and a woman standing on a white sand beach looking towards the ocean. It is an aerial view and you can see a lush green island in the distance. One of the best islands in the USA.

Dry Tortugas, Florida

Dry Tortugas is actually a National Park in Florida. It is about 70 miles west of Key West, one of the most popular of the Florida Keys. Because it’s a National Park, the only option for staying on Dry Tortugas is camping. If that’s something you’re up for, it’s a really fun experience. Otherwise, you’ll want to stay in Key West and travel to Dry Tortugas.

Included in Dry Tortugas National Park is a series of smaller keys. They all make up the larger collection of islands simply known as Dry Tortugas. The islands all have different attractions. You can explore a historic fort, see local wildlife, go snorkeling, ride a seaplane, and there is also a ferry around the islands. Dry Tortugas is one of the coolest islands in the USA to explore.

Saint Croix, US Virgin Islands

If you want to go to the Caribbean, but you don’t have a passport, then you need to check out the US Virgin Islands. The US Virgin Islands is a series of islands that are considered US territory. So even though they are in the Caribbean, US citizens can visit them without needing any type of passport. One of our favorite tropical islands in the USA is Saint Croix. From Florida, it is about a 3-hour nonstop flight and there are so many things to do in Saint Croix!

15 Beautiful US Islands That'll Make You Forget All About Traveling Abroad

Who needs Martinique when you've got Marco Island?

Evie Carrick

BuzzFeed Contributor

The coronavirus pandemic is still impacting travel, and destinations around the world have different COVID-19 restrictions in place. Always check and adhere to local government policies, and use our content to dream about a future trip.

1. San Juan Island — Washington

A lighthouse on the cliffs of Lime Kiln Point overlooking Dead Man's Bay

You don’t have to visit British Columbia to see killer whales in the wild — a pod of orcas live year-round in the San Juan Islands archipelago, just off the northwest coast of Washington. You can spot these giant, black-and-white mammals from Lime Kiln Point State Park on San Juan Island — or better yet, from a kayak. If whales aren’t your thing, there's plenty of hiking, biking, and fishing to keep you entertained.

2. Martha’s Vineyard — Massachusetts

gentle waves lapping against a rocky shoreline

You’ve probably heard of this Massachusetts island, which is frequented by stars, politicians, and ~socialites~. And there’s a good reason why: The food scene is top notch — try the chowder from Martha’s Vineyard Chowder Company and a donut from Back Door Donuts (not necessarily together) — and the beaches are clean and broad. For views, ride your bike along the clay Aquinnah Cliffs , which were carved by glaciers a loooong time ago.

3. Oahu — Hawaii

islands to visit with passport

The island of Oahu may be home to the state’s capital, but don’t be fooled into thinking the island is all about the city. You can benefit from Honolulu’s food and nightlife (and Waikiki’s surf) before heading to the quieter north shore where you can swim, cage-free with sharks . Yes, you read that right.

4. Hilton Head Island — South Carolina

If you golf — even a little — chances are you know of this island, which is just barely off the coast of South Carolina. When you're not hitting the greens, check out Coligny Beach or visit the iconic lighthouse (with ice cream in hand) in Harbour Town.

5. Nantucket — Massachusetts

a row of cute houses along the waterfront at dusk

Just 30 miles off the coast of Cape Cod, you’ll find the the dunes and beaches of Nantucket. This tiny, remote island is a true summer destination, boasting excellent fishing and Nantucket Bay scallops. You can explore the island by bike, go for a hike, or brave the waters with a lesson at Nantucket Island Surf School .

6. Block Island — Rhode Island

rocky cliffs by the ocean

An easy 45-minute ferry ride from the mainland will bring you to Block Island, home to miles of beaches and the Mohegan Bluffs , impressive clay cliffs that rise almost 200 feet above the sea. Spend the morning boogie boarding at Mansion Beach before refueling with a lobster roll from Southeast Light Delights , and finish off the day watching the sun drop from Charlestown Beach.

7. Mackinac Island — Michigan

Mackinac Island is a bit different to most other islands on this list. Rather than being in the middle of the salty ocean, it's found floating in Lake Huron and surrounded by freshwater. And since the island is car-free, don’t be surprised if you see horses trotting the streets downtown — that’s the norm on Mackinac.

8. Maui — Hawaii

sandy, colorful, volcanic landscape of Haleakala Crater

Maui is home to the Haleakala volcano, the scenic Hana Highway, and the waterfalls of Oheo Gulch . Oh, and there's also 30 miles of beaches . ‘Nuff said.

9. Roanoke Island — North Carolina

A lit up pier with a building at the end and soft dusk light

Roanoke Island has captivated the imaginations of visitors for centuries. The 12-mile long island in North Carolina’s Outer Banks was the landing place of a group of English settlers who mysteriously disappeared in 1590. The result is an island destination with an edge — you can't help but feel a twinge of excitement in knowing that the beach you sit on may have played a part in the island's great unsolved mystery.

10. Fire Island — New York

A colorful sunrise scene with a distinct pink stripe against the Fire Island Lighthhouse

Just off Long Island’s southern shore is a long, thin spit of land called Fire Island. On the west end you’ll find Robert Moses State Park and its iconic 5-mile stretch of beach, while Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness — the only federally designated wilderness area in the state — is to the east. In between are a handful of tranquil, car-free communities only accessible by ferry.

11. Marco Island — Florida

a sunset over the still water with palm trees in the shadows

Sandwiched between Naples and the Everglades on the Gulf Coast is Marco Island — a barrier island full of canals and wide, sugar-sand beaches. You can search for shells on Tigertail Beach and South Beach, or simply bask in the near-perfect tropical climate , where the water temperature at the beach averages a balmy 78 degrees, and the weather rarely drops below 50.

12. Mount Desert Island — Maine

Rocks and trees leading down to the water at Schooner Head

For a Maine coastal experience (hello, lobster rolls!) head to Mount Desert Island, home to the iconic Acadia National Park . The 47,000-acre park has enough terrain to keep you entertained for hours, and, if you're lucky, you might even spot a rare whale, moose, or bear while you're there. When you’ve had enough exploring, retreat to the town of Bar Harbor for some serious R&R.

13. Channel Islands — California

Inspiration Point, Anacapa Island

Okay so technically this is a group of islands, but if you’re up for a true adventure, look no further. This unassuming archipelago is found off the coast of Los Angeles , but unlike Catalina Island, which gets all the attention (and all the tourists), the Channel Islands are delightfully remote. Often referred to as the “Galapagos of America,” the eight islands — five of which are part of Channel Islands National Park — are home to animals and plants found nowhere else on Earth thanks to the islands’ isolated locale.

14. Captiva Island — Florida

a beautiful sunset and pathway to the beach

Off the coast of Fort Myers, Florida, is a series of barrier and coastal islands in the Gulf’s warm waters. Among these is Captiva Island, a beach-y sliver of land that spans just 5 miles in length. The tiny island is all about the outdoors — bird watching, biking, sailing, fishing — and remains surprisingly tranquil considering the ease of access from the neighboring Sanibel Island.

15. Isla Vieques — Puerto Rico

islands to visit with passport

Puerto Rico is obviously a small island in and of itself, but Vieques is an even tinier island just of Puerto Rico's eastern coast. It's got all the appeal of a trip to the tropics: gorgeous beaches, warm weather, rainforest vegetation, and truly incredible food (seriously). But Vieques is also home to one of the few natural bioluminescent bays in the world, Mosquito Bay . Visit at night on a kayak for an aquatic light show you'll never forget.

Introduction

Welcome to the beautiful and vibrant Caribbean! With its stunning turquoise waters, white sand beaches, and tropical climate, it’s no wonder that the Caribbean is a dream destination for many travelers. One of the key considerations when planning a trip to the Caribbean is whether a passport is required for entry. While many countries around the world do require a passport, there are some Caribbean islands that have more relaxed entry requirements. In this article, we’ll explore the Caribbean islands that do not require a passport, as well as the alternative forms of identification that can be used.

For those who prefer a quick and convenient getaway without having to go through the passport application process, these destinations can be the perfect choice. Whether you’re a spontaneous traveler looking for a last-minute escape or simply want to avoid the hassle of obtaining a passport, these passport-free Caribbean islands offer a range of experiences to suit every taste.

But before we dive into the specific islands that don’t require a passport, let’s first discuss the methodology used to compile this list. It’s important to note that travel requirements can change and vary depending on your citizenship, so it’s always best to double-check with the relevant authorities before planning your trip.

Methodology

In order to compile a list of Caribbean islands that do not require a passport for entry, we conducted extensive research using official government websites, travel resources, and reputable travel blogs. We sought information from reliable sources to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the data presented in this article.

Our primary focus was on the entry requirements for international travelers, specifically for individuals who hold citizenship in countries that typically require a passport for international travel. We considered the specific islands within the Caribbean region that have specific arrangements in place allowing visitors to enter without a passport.

It’s important to note that while some Caribbean islands may not require a passport for entry, they may still require other forms of identification, such as a government-issued ID card or a driver’s license. Additionally, the specific entry requirements may vary depending on the traveler’s citizenship, length of stay, and purpose of visit.

We also took into consideration the overall accessibility of these passport-free destinations. We factored in the availability of direct flights or easy connections from major international airports to ensure that travelers have convenient options for reaching these Caribbean islands without a passport.

While we strive to provide up-to-date and accurate information, it’s essential to remember that travel regulations can change. Therefore, it’s recommended to check with the official government websites or consult with the respective embassies or consulates of the Caribbean islands you plan to visit to obtain the most recent and accurate entry requirements.

Caribbean Islands that Do Not Require a Passport

If you’re looking for a Caribbean getaway without the hassle of obtaining a passport, here are some stunning islands that allow entry with alternative forms of identification:

  • U.S. Virgin Islands: As a U.S. territory, the U.S. Virgin Islands, including St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix, do not require U.S. citizens to present a passport for entry. A government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, is sufficient.
  • Puerto Rico: Another U.S. territory, Puerto Rico offers a tropical escape without the need for a passport. U.S. citizens can travel to Puerto Rico with a government-issued ID.
  • British Virgin Islands: The British Virgin Islands, including Tortola, Virgin Gorda, and Jost Van Dyke, allow U.S. citizens to enter with a government-issued ID and proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or naturalization certificate.
  • Cayman Islands: The Cayman Islands welcomes U.S. citizens with a government-issued ID and proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or naturalization certificate.
  • Aruba: Located in the southern Caribbean, Aruba allows U.S. citizens to enter with a government-issued ID and proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or naturalization certificate.

These islands offer a range of attractions, from stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters to vibrant nightlife and cultural experiences. Whether you’re seeking relaxation, adventure, or a mix of both, these passport-free Caribbean destinations have something for everyone.

It’s important to note that while these islands may not require a passport for entry, other nationalities may have different entry requirements. Therefore, it is crucial to check the specific entry regulations for your country of citizenship before planning your trip.

Alternative Forms of Identification

If you’re planning to visit a Caribbean island that does not require a passport, it’s important to have the appropriate alternative forms of identification. Here are some commonly accepted identification documents:

  • Government-Issued ID: Many Caribbean islands accept government-issued photo IDs as a valid form of identification. This can include driver’s licenses, state ID cards, or national identity cards. Ensure that your ID is current and not expired.
  • Birth Certificate: Some islands may require a government-issued birth certificate as proof of citizenship. It is essential to have an original or certified copy of your birth certificate, preferably with a raised seal.
  • Naturalization Certificate: If you’re a naturalized citizen, a naturalization certificate can be used as proof of citizenship. Make sure to bring an original or certified copy.
  • Enhanced Driver’s License: For U.S. citizens, an enhanced driver’s license can be used as an alternative to a passport. These licenses are available in select U.S. states and are specifically designed for border crossings.
  • PASS Card: The U.S. Passport Card, also known as the PASS card, is a wallet-sized alternative to a traditional passport book. It can be used for land and sea travel to certain Caribbean countries.

It’s important to note that while these alternative forms of identification may be accepted, it’s always advisable to check the entry requirements specific to the Caribbean island you plan to visit. Some islands may have additional requirements or restrictions based on your country of citizenship.

Remember to carry multiple copies of your identification documents and store them in separate locations while traveling. In the event of loss or theft, having backup copies can make the process of obtaining replacements much smoother.

Additional Travel Requirements

While some Caribbean islands may not require a passport for entry, it’s important to be aware of any additional travel requirements that may apply. These requirements can vary depending on your citizenship, purpose of visit, and length of stay. Here are some common additional travel requirements you should consider:

  • Visa Requirements: Even if a passport is not required, certain Caribbean islands may still require visitors to obtain a visa. It’s crucial to check the visa requirements for your specific country of citizenship before traveling.
  • Proof of Return or Onward Travel: Some islands may require visitors to provide proof of return or onward travel, such as a confirmed airline ticket or travel itinerary. This is to ensure that visitors have plans to leave the island within the designated timeframe.
  • Proof of Sufficient Funds: Some Caribbean islands may require visitors to demonstrate that they have sufficient funds to support themselves during their stay. This can be in the form of a bank statement or a credit card with a sufficient credit limit.
  • Health Requirements: Certain islands may have specific health requirements, such as proof of vaccination or a recent negative COVID-19 test. Check the destination’s official government website or consult with a healthcare professional to ensure compliance with any health-related entry requirements.
  • Customs and Immigration Forms: Upon arrival, you may be required to fill out customs and immigration forms. These forms collect basic information about your travel plans, intended length of stay, and any items you are bringing with you. Ensure you have a pen and complete these forms accurately and legibly.

It’s essential to research and familiarize yourself with the specific travel requirements of the Caribbean island you plan to visit. This will ensure a smooth and hassle-free entry process and help you avoid any unexpected complications during your trip.

Lastly, keep in mind that travel requirements can change, so it’s a good practice to double-check the official government websites or consult with the respective embassies or consulates of the Caribbean islands to stay updated on any changes to entry requirements.

Planning a trip to the Caribbean can be an exciting and fulfilling experience. Knowing which Caribbean islands do not require a passport can be incredibly helpful for travelers looking for a quick and hassle-free getaway. Whether you’re a U.S. citizen or hold citizenship in a country with similar entry arrangements, these passport-free destinations offer stunning beaches, rich cultural experiences, and a chance to unwind in paradise.

While the specific islands that do not require a passport may vary, destinations such as the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, and Aruba provide opportunities to explore the Caribbean without the need for a passport. It’s important to verify the specific entry requirements for your country of citizenship and familiarize yourself with the alternative forms of identification that are accepted.

However, it’s crucial to remember that even if a passport is not required, additional travel requirements such as visas, proof of return or onward travel, proof of sufficient funds, and health requirements may still apply. Be sure to research and understand these requirements before your trip to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.

Lastly, it’s always recommended to stay informed of any changes in travel regulations by checking the official government websites or consulting with the relevant embassies or consulates. The travel landscape can evolve, and it’s essential to be prepared and up to date with the latest information.

So, whether you’re seeking relaxation on the beaches of the U.S. Virgin Islands or exploring the natural beauty of the British Virgin Islands, these passport-free Caribbean destinations can fulfill your tropical getaway dreams. Pack your bags, prepare your alternative identification, and get ready to experience the beauty and charm of the Caribbean without the worry of a passport.

"Otherwise, you must be prepared to show evidence of citizenship when departing the islands, such as a raised-seal birth certificate and government-issued photo ID."

Closed-loop cruise passport requirements

Travelers on closed-loop cruises – sailings that depart and end at the same U.S. port and travel within the Western Hemisphere – do not need a passport, according to Customs and Border Protection.

U.S. citizens can enter the country with a birth certificate and government-issued photo ID. If under 16, a U.S. citizen can present their birth certificate , certificate of naturalization or consular birth report abroad.

Customs and Border Protection says U.S. citizens on closed-loop cruises can enter or depart a country on the cruise with proof of citizenship, but some destination countries "may require" a passport.

"In those instances, the cruise lines would require passengers to have a valid passport to board even if it is not a U.S. requirement," the agency's website reads. "You should check with your cruise ship, travel agent, and destination country to confirm the requirements to enter the foreign countries you will visit."
