White Horses of the Camargue

camargue horse tour

The power, strength and beauty of the distinctive breed of Camargue white horses is on full display in this action-packed, immersive photography experience in Southern France.

camargue horse tour

Based in the heart of the Camargue wetlands, we join professional wildlife photographer Chris Weston for five separate photographic sessions with the white horses over three days, guided by the highly experienced gardians from a traditional, family-run ranch. From the herd galloping in the shallow salt marshes, to stallions running powerfully through the Mediterranean surf and intimate close-up portraits of the horses, there are various photographic opportunities on offer here.

Typical Itinerary

Day 1 : fly to montpellier & transfer to the camargue.

Today we depart the UK on flights to Montpellier. On arrival we transfer to our accommodation near the scenic French town of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer in the Camargue .

Accommodation: Cacharel Hotel, 3-nights

Days 2-3 : Photography sessions with the white horses of the Camargue

Over the course of the next two days we have photographic sessions in the morning and afternoon with the white horses of the Camargue. These sessions will take place at different locations in the Parc Naturel Régional de Camargue and the marshes of the Rhône delta providing opportunities to photograph the horses in different environments.

The Camargue horse is an ancient breed, indigenous to the Camargue region. It’s one of the oldest breeds in the world and for centuries these horses have lived wild in the harsh environment of the Camargue wetlands. During our photographic session, there are multiple opportunities to capture images of the horses in powerful gallops through cascading water, as the gardians “wrangle” them in the shallow marshes. In between runs you can create stunning portraits and capture candid moments as the horses catch their breath. Throughout our time here Chris Weston will be on hand to provide guidance and tuition helping you to get the most out of your images.

Day 4 : Final photography session & return to UK

This morning we have our final sessions with the famous white horses of the Camargue and last chance to add images to our portfolios. Afterwards, it’s time to return to the airport at Montpellier and fly back to the UK.

* Camargue Horses Photo Sessions.

The horses are moving very fast. Therefore we recommend bringing a camera body that shoots at least 5 frames per second (fps) if possible. Magrit and I both had 7 fps in 2017 which seemed sufficient.  I used the 100-400 mm on my full-frame Canon and Magrit used the 70-200 mm on her crop-sensor Canon. We were both pleased with the results. I also had a second body with a 24-70 mm ready to use when the horses got closer. Most of my keepers were from the longer lens.

You will want to use the focus-tracking AF system in your camera. For Canons, this is AI Servo and for Nikon, it is Continuous-servo AF (AF-C). We suggest that you find the correct settings before the tour and practice photographing something moving toward you.

For photographing the running horses you will want to have at least a 1/500th shutter speed. To achieve this you may have to bump up your ISO. I used 640 ISO a lot and this is about the minimum you should use. Some photographers like to set the camera to shutter priority to lock in a fast shutter speed. Using Auto-ISO can help here as well. I shot primarily in manual mode and was pleased with my results. Patrice likes to shoot in Aperture Priority at f8 as he likes to make sure that he achieves enough depth of field.

You may also want to try some panning of the running horses where you use a slower shutter speed, 1/15, 1/30 or 1/60. The desired outcome here is relatively sharp horses and a blurry background.

Temperature range for this time of year : 70º to 100º  F.

Average monthly rainfall for this time of year : 1″. We have experienced some torrential afternoon showers and thunderstorms.

Pack light , as we will not have room in the van for more than one piece of luggage plus a camera bag for each of us. Restrict your main piece of luggage to no more than 26 inches. Magrit & I both travel for 4-5 months with 25-26 inch Travel Pro Max Lite luggage. Most airlines are now charging for more than one piece of checked baggage. Keep in mind that laundry service is available in most locations.

Two pairs of shoes:  One sturdy pair for in the field that you can get wet and muddy. One pair for evenings.

Long pants and socks so that you can tuck your pants into your socks to avoid tick exposure while in the field. Short, lightweight gaiters are useful. Here is a fun brand , $20….you need to attach the included piece of self-stick velcro to the back of your shoe.

Tick repellent.

Headlamp with Red Light Mode.

Small umbrella for rain and shade.  I use an umbrella often to block the sun from hitting the front element of my lens. Black is best.

Sweater or light jacket for a possible chill on early morning shoots.  A light layer underneath a rain jacket can be surprisingly warm.

Hat for sun and rain protection.

Sunscreen and insect repellent.

Bathing suit for the swimming pool at our hotel in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer.

Horse riding in Camargue, France

camargue horse tour

In European summer of 2020, my great friend Stine and I went on a 2 week road trip through Belgium, France and Germany and did an amazing horse ride on Camargue horses along the French coast. In this post I’ll tell you all about the ride we did, the Camargue horses in this area and the stunning nature to witness in the south of France in Camargue.

This article contains links, some of which are affiliate links. If you make a purchase through one of my links, I earn a commission which allows me to fund this blog. I only post links of products I have used and enjoyed and that have truly benefited me on my travels!

Horse riding in camargue france

Let’s ride in the Camargue in France!

On this ride in France I rode the fantastic Nandos! He’s a Camargue horse and palomino cross and absolutely lovely to ride with lots of spice. The ride we went on was with Le Palomino just outside of a beautiful little town called Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. The beautiful white horses at Le Palomino were stunning and in very good condition. We were in a group of about 12 people on the ride and some were complete beginners, some intermediate and some experienced. I expected the ride to be slow as there were quite a lot of beginners. Even though it wouldn’t have been a problem to have a slow ride as the nature was so beautiful, we had the opportunity to do a couple of trots and canters and some amazing gallops over the wide Camargue beach just outside Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. The local horses were absolutely amazing and very well matched to their riders. Even as we were splitting up the group for the gallop, the beginner horses stayed behind in a walk, very relaxed, while we galloped down the beach. The guide was very friendly and knowledgeable but his English was limited, however we quickly were able to understand each other with my broken french and his broken English, and a very helpful guest that translated some parts for me. All in all, an incredible ride!

Camargue’s nature and horses

The nature in Camargue is absolutely stunning and there are many opportunities to see birds and to see the greater Flamingo, which we even saw a big group of on our ride! You’ll see cattle and the typical Camargue horses roaming the marshlands. This breed of horse from the Camargue is thought to be one of the oldest in the world! These small horses live in the wet- and marshlands in the area which makes them quite hardy, as they’ve been surviving in this harsh environment. Despite their small size, they’re very stocky and are able to carry adults easily. They usually have a calm temperament with lots of stamina and agility which makes them absolutely lovely to ride!

Horse riding holiday in France

The town of Saintes Maries de la Mer and where to stay

While we were traveling through France, we stayed at a lovely campsite in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer called La Brise . The first night we however wild-camped a little further into the Camargue and away from Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. We used the app iOverlander to find a beautiful little wild camping spot, next to a river and behind an old chateau. Besides the lovely experience we had on the ride, we also really enjoyed our stay in the town as they serve great local cuisine and incredible seafood! We enjoyed the beach and the bubbly town a lot and I truly recommend staying here a few days to go horse riding and exploring. We camped under a pop-up mosquito net almost every night during our road trip which allowed us to witness the beautiful night sky in the south of France, which was an absolutely amazing decision! It made the road trip and camping experience so much more enjoyable and stunning. It was an amazing experience to be by yourself, in a vast nature reserve, on top of a mountain, watching the sun set. On the picture below you can see one of the streets of the cosy French town at night, it was lovely to walk around with music playing at every corner and the friendliest people!

Camping with mosquito net in nature

If you're also planning to go road tripping or horse riding in Europe, you can do fantastic overnight horse riding tours in Switzerland and visit the Spanish riding school in Vienna . You can do fantastic rides all over Europe, with varying landscape and horses. Almost all these places offer multi day or over night horse riding tours and short rides! This truly makes Europe a horse lovers paradise and perfect for your horse riding holiday.

White horses of the camargue, 29th september - 02nd october, 2022.

Fully Booked

The White Horses of the Camargue Photography Tour . Famous for its beautiful wild white horses that roam the area, the Camargue is a haven for any lover of the wild. Join experienced equine fine art photographer Jonathan Chritchley in this 3 day photo tour that gives you a thoroughly unique experience – photographing these wild horses running together through the warm waters of the Mediterranean, through the lakes and marshes, and nurturing their foals in fields warmed by the sun. We stay in a lovely hotel with pool and superb restaurant in the middle of the Camargue and close to the historic town of Saintes Maries de la Mer. With this as our base we set out at either end of the day to photograph these beautiful animals, each session involving 5 or 6 ‘gardiens’ or cowboys/cowgirls who will herd the horses as Jonathan directs the shoot to give you the very best possibilities for some amazing photography. Photograph a herd of 15 horses as they charge through the lagoons towards you. Join a single white stallion on a secluded beach at dawn as he stands proudly, gallops along the dunes and in and out of the water. Spend some intimate time with the mares and foals, getting to know these lovely, gentle animals whilst shooting close-ups and portraits. There will also be slideshows, editing and processing sessions and photo reviews by Jonathan at the hotel. This is not an experience you can buy ‘off the peg’, but rather one especially created for lovers of photography and wildlife, to capture these moments that will stay with you for a lifetime.

NB This workshop can be booked alongside THE AIR PROJECT, a 2 day aerial abstract photography workshop with Jonathan, also taking place in the Camargue just before this workshop.

White Horses of Camargue

Photogenic icons of the south of france.

In the wild, the white Camargue horses are found only on the wetlands and salt marshes of southeastern France. They are thought to be descended from prehistoric horses that lived during the Paleolithic period more than 17,000 years ago. Throughout history, this ancient breed is believed to have been crossed with several other breeds—particularly Arabian horses. This genetic combination permits these brawny animals to withstand the region’s bleak, cold winters and intensely hot summers. They are so strong it is said they can canter through mud up to their bellies!

12 05 03 H6I2593

The Camargue horse is the traditional mount of the gardians. These cowboys of the Camargue are responsible for rounding up the wild black “fighting” bulls that graze the land. Over time, the gardians have developed the original breed of Camargue horses into a surprisingly agile, surefooted and reliable mount. The Camargue is considered one of Europe’s few remaining original breeds, although it was not officially recognized as a unique breed until 1976. Today, there are about 30 separate herds spread over an area of around 203,000 acres. Foals are born starting in April. Though they are dark in color at birth, all the Camargue horses are white when mature. It is speculated that white coats may provide a natural mosquito repellent for animals adapted to salt marsh living.

Camargue Flamingos AM 06 04 07 KX9R3731

Our amazing shoot concentrates on photographing the horses during the best light of day, with the goal of creating images depicting as much of their untamed life as possible. Horse drives orchestrated by the gardians are at the top of our shooting list, but fighting stallions and quiet moments in the marshes are also on our agenda. Our photo safari takes place on private ranchlands adjacent to or inside to the Parc naturel régional de Camargue—a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Here, along with the famous horses and bulls dwell an interesting assortment of wading birds and shorebirds, including impressive flocks of greater flamingos. Our tour includes a visit to the Parc Ornithologique de Pont de Gau for very accessible viewing and shots of hundreds of pink flamingos. Don’t miss this exceptional opportunity to photograph the white horses of the Camargue for yourself!

Days 4-7 For the next four mornings and afternoons, we bring the ranch horses to different properties, allowing for a wide range of photogenic backdrops and behaviors. We photograph the white horses running through the shallow water of salt marshes and along the beach in the waves and salt spray. With shots of fighting stallions, mares with their dark foals in the fields or at the ranches, and detailed portraits—head shots and gardian riders in their gear—we have many opportunities to capture this time-honored breed in a variety of environments unique to this seaside estuary. We also take advantage of the sweet light at sunrise and sunset to silhouette horses with or without riders.

We assume no responsibility for medical care or for special dietary requirements. Tour members are asked to refrain from smoking with or near the group.

5. CONTACT SCHEDULE Participants will receive three emails before the trip departs: 1. Initial Tour Information sheet confirms the deposit and provides pre-departure information. 2. Invoice/Practical Information provides clothing and photo gear recommendations, climate data, and applicable health advisories. Visa information will also be included (if applicable). 3. Final Tour Information includes arrival instructions, itinerary revisions (if any), hotel addresses, trip telephone contact information and participant list. We provide the trip leader's telephone number(s) and/or email address with final documents so you can inquire about special photographic questions you may have regarding your trip. We welcome your calls or email messages to [email protected].

6. PHOTO SAFARI TRIP FEE INCLUSIONS Information supplied upon enrollment describes the specific details that are included in your trip fee. Generally, these include lodging in double room occupancy, all meals (specified in the itinerary as BLD denoting breakfast, lunch, or dinner), ground transportation during the trip in vans or small busses, internal tour air transportation as specified, meal and baggage tipping, and guide services provided by the trip leaders. Not included are airfare or other transportation from your home to the trip staging location, airport departure taxes, insurance, alcoholic beverages, and bar expenses (plus bottled water and soft drink expenses on international tours outside of North America), tips and gratuities to local guides, phone calls, passport or visa expenses, laundry, or items of a personal nature. Gratuities to Van Os Photo Safaris trip leaders are optional and always appreciated. Rates are based on group tariffs; if the trip does not have sufficient registration, a small party supplement may be charged.

Most of our trips are priced in double occupancy (shared) accommodations. Single accommodation is available for a supplemental cost in many locations; see the pre-departure trip information or call our office for details. You will be charged the single supplement fee if you desire single accommodation or if you wish to have a roommate, but one is not available. In some remote locations, clients with single rooms are infrequently compelled to share a room due to circumstances beyond our control. In such cases, appropriate per diem refunds will be made reflecting the direct cost of the single room at the facility where clients are required to share. There is no additional single supplement fee on ship-based cruises if you request a roommate and one is not available.

Cost increases may occur unexpectedly due to rising costs of airfares, ground transport, fuel surcharges, accommodations, and currency fluctuations, among others. Van Os Photo Safaris, Inc. may be compelled to amend prices, and we reserve the right to do so without prior notice. An increase in trip prices shall not be sufficient grounds for any refund of funds paid for the trip other than as determined by the terms of our cancellation policy.

7. LOGISTICS Whenever possible, our trip participants are lodged in comfortable, modern hotels. We select among the best available accommodations but refrain from extravagance. Some interesting photographic destinations are far removed from modern amenities, however, and where necessary we will be accommodated in rustic country inns, cabins, or tented camps.

Meals are always a special part of our trips for the camaraderie they engender and the opportunity they provide to try new foods from different areas. Depending on the trip and specific locale, participants order restaurant meals from the full menu or, less frequently, table d'hôte. Some trips include picnic lunches in the field. Fruit juice for breakfast and coffee or tea is included with the meals. Soft drinks are included with meals on tours within North America. Participants are responsible for their own bar tab (including bottled water, soft drinks, as well as alcoholic beverages on tours outside of North America) at restaurant lunches and dinners.

Our itineraries are intended as examples only. Participants should allow for flexibility due to changes in weather, natural history or cultural events, or other logistical arrangements deemed necessary by Van Os Photo Safaris, Inc., or our leaders.

The second tour leader (and any subsequent additional leaders) listed for each trip on the website will be added as the group size warrants. If only one space remains on a trip, and logistics permit, we accept two people traveling together, even if it exceeds the trip maximum.

8. RESPONSIBILITY Van Os Photo Safaris, Inc. and/or their Agents act only as agents for the passenger (trip participant) in regard to travel including, but not limited to, sightseeing, meals, lodging, transportation, and all other services whether by railroad, motor coach, automobile, van, boat, ship or aircraft or any other conveyance, and they assume no liability for injury, damage, loss, accident, delay or irregularity which may be occasioned for any reason whatsoever, or through the acts, bankruptcy or default of any company or person engaged in conveying the passenger or in carrying out the arrangements of the trip.

They can accept no responsibility for losses or additional expenses due to delay, cancellations or changes in flights or other tour services, and by force majeure including sickness, weather, strike, war, volcanic eruption, terrorist acts, political unrest, quarantine, epidemics, pandemics and outbreaks, or other causes. All such losses or expenses will have to be borne by the passenger, as trip fees provide for arrangements only for the times and locations stated. Baggage is at the owner's risk entirely.

The right is reserved to 1) substitute hotels of similar category for those indicated and to make any changes in the itinerary or transport where deemed necessary, or caused by changes in flight schedules or equipment substitution; 2) cancel any trip prior to departure due to low enrollment, in which case full refund of the paid trip funds will be given, but Van Os Photo Safaris, Inc. is not responsible for any other trip preparation expenses such as penalized or non-refundable air tickets, visa fees, travel insurance premiums and medical related expenses; 3) At the company’s sole discretion, suspend or postpone any trip due to force majeure or disease outbreak in which case the trip may be rescheduled, or a refund issued less any non-refundable deposits paid to tour component providers on behalf of the passenger, or a travel credit given, but Van Os Photo Safaris, Inc. is not responsible for any other trip preparation expenses such as penalized or non-refundable air tickets, visa fees and medical related expenses; 4) substitute trip leader(s) for the leader(s) originally specified, in which case the substitution is not a basis for participant cancellation or refund other than provided by our normal cancellation policy; or 5) accept or retain any person as a member of any trip.

Trip prices are based on tariffs and exchange rates in effect at the time of publication and are subject to adjustment in the event of any change therein.

A signed Registration Form with the Enrollment Conditions and Release and Assumption of Risk sections must be returned by each participant prior to the commencement of the trip. Participation by any trip member will be declined in the absence of the signed Registration Form including the Release and Assumption of Risk section, with no trip fee refund. No modification to the Registration Form including the Release and Assumption of Risk section will be accepted.

Should Van Os Photo Safaris, Inc., or anyone acting on their behalf be required to incur attorney's fees and any costs to enforce this agreement, the enrolling trip participant(s) agree(s) to indemnify and hold them harmless for all such fees and costs. Daily itinerary

White Horses of Camargue | 5 Day Photo Tour in France - day 1

Day 1 - Day 1: Arrival

We'll begin the trip by meeting at the Marseille airport at 1PM. Our schedule will be tight, so that we can accomplish more during the next few days and make the most of our time in France. For this reason, we advise that newcomers book morning flights or stay in Marseille overnight. Our recommended airlines to fly into Marseille are KLM or AirFrance. Once the group has assembled, we'll begin our journey towards the Parc Naturel Régional de Camargue, also known as the Camargue National Park. Upon arrival to the town of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer – where the park is located – we'll receive a brief orientation on shooting the horses and other important reminders to keep in mind during our tour. Thereafter, we'll make our way to the first shooting location to capture the ranchers herd the animals into dynamic squadrons, galloping upon the sandy beaches or in shallow water.  We'll spend the wonderful golden hours of the day before sunset photographing Camargue's unparalleled equine beauties.

White Horses of Camargue | 5 Day Photo Tour in France - day 2

Day 2 - Day 2: Show of White Horses

On day two, we'll head out to photograph the horses in the early morning in the pink salt marshes. This amazing photo shoot will be followed by a short critique and discussion session of the photos we've taken, before we head out into the park once again. This time, we'll continue to sharpen our photography skills as we capture the spectacular foals and mares at sunset.

White Horses of Camargue | 5 Day Photo Tour in France - day 3

Day 3 - Day 3: Camargue National Park

On day three, we'll spend the sunrise birdwatching in the Camargue National Park. We will have a special access only for our group in this park to have the best light when we see the 340 species of birds that visit this park, the most famous are the pink flamingoes. We'll follow the paths and make use of the observation booths in order to capture these colourful creatures mulling about in their colonies on a small island near Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, which is the only such habitat for these birds in France.

In the afternoon, we'll have another photography educational masterclass and critique session, before we head back into the national park for a sunset session in the classic marshes with the white horses as they move around with their herds, guided by the ranchers.

White Horses of Camargue | 5 Day Photo Tour in France - day 4

Day 4 - Day 4: The Camargue Bulls

We'll have two shooting sessions again this day – one in the morning and the other in the evening. In the morning, we will photograph the Camargue bulls which takes place in a natural site between marshes and tall grass . The herd of 15 to 20 free-roaming bulls is led by herdsmen on horseback. The photographers are high on a large trailer pulled by a tractor. This allows you to move to change your point of view without scaring the bulls. It will be a very memorable experience as we even have breakfast with the herdsmen to have the chance to talk to them about their lives.

In the afternoon, we will focus on landscape photography shooting the pink salt marshes as we make some abstract compositions.

White Horses of Camargue | 5 Day Photo Tour in France - day 5

Day 5 - Day 5: Departure from Marseille airport

This will be our last day together in France. We will have the sunrise session with the horses on the beach as the finale.  After breakfast, we'll pack our belongings and begin the drive back to Marseille, arriving by around noon. From there, you'll be able to catch your flight home or onwards to your next destination, no doubt with a plethora of new photography skills under your belt and a portfolio of incredible images of the white horses of Camargue.

We highly recommend that you get a travel and medical insurance. Your own domestic medical insurance and private health scheme will not cover you whilst you are overseas.

The tour will always dependent on weather, as the weather can be highly unpredictable.

9 Top Things to Do in the Camargue, France

camargue horse tour

South of Arles, France, the great Rhone River splits on its final push toward the Mediterranean, in between creating a triangle of wetlands, pastures, dunes, and salt flats—the Camargue. In this vast, marshy landscape, long-horned bulls and white horses run semi-free, flamingos fly overhead, and gardians —cowboys—toil on their manades (ranches) in France’s version of the Wild West. Come here to bird-watch, horseback ride, explore Spanish-style and Crusader villages, attend bull games (not fights), stay on a Camarguais ranch, and get to know a singular way of life devoted to independence, freedom, and hard work.

Ride a White Horse in Camargue Regional Nature Park

Small and agile, the Camargue’s striking white horses with their flowing tails resemble the horses painted on the walls of Lascaux cave some 15,000 years ago. Indeed, they’re considered one of the world’s oldest breeds. Used to work the land and herd the black bulls, these Horses of the Sea are celebrated at the annual Féria du Cheval in July in the town of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, with concerts of Roma music and equestrian shows. Jump astride one of these majestic animals yourself and explore Camargue Regional Nature Park , a 210,000-plus-acre expanse of salt marshes, lakes, rice fields, and glasswort-covered moors. Many riding stables, including Les Arnelles and Le Palomino Le Boumian , offer trail rides.

Be Awed by Pink Flamingos

As you drive the Camargue’s lonesome roads or stroll its secluded trails, don’t be surprised if you look up at the blue sky and spy great pink birds flying overhead, their wings striped with black. Flocks of flamantes roses —pink flamingos—make the Camargue their home, the only site in Europe where they regularly breed, an average of 10,000 pairs a year. To see them up close—and to learn a bit about them—stop by the Parc Ornithologique du Pont de Gau in the heart of Camargue Regional Nature Park, with trails and boardwalks ambling through the marshy, bird-filled landscape. Next door, the Maison du Parc Naturel Régional de Camargue , the nature park’s main info center, is another favorite bird-watching spot, with exhibits of mounted birds helping to i.d. the live ones you see flitting and fluttering and floating outside the giant picture windows. You’ll soon come to realize that, although the flamingos are the stars, there are plenty of other birds to admire—some 400 different species, including purple heron, white storks, and spotted eagles.

Watch the Bull Games

If you hear music blaring as you’re moseying around Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, you can bet bull games— courses Camarguaises —are going on at the arena by the beach. This is bullfighting Camarguais style, a longstanding tradition featuring the small, spirited, crafty bulls that may have originated from horses brought here by Attila the Hun. They roam the Camargue as they please until they’re rounded up for bullfight season, late April through September. Rest assured, these games differ from their Spanish cousin in that the bulls are not killed. Instead, young rasateurs challenge the bulls in a game of cat-and-mouse, with the bull snorting and charging as the rasateurs grab tassels and bows from their horns with a finger-held rake, jumping to safety over low walls. The most prestigious bull games— La Cocarde d’Or —take place in Arles in July. You can also see courses Camarguaises in Nîmes and Tarascon.

Learn About Camargue Life at Musée de la Camargue

Humans have survived in this challenging landscape for centuries, ever fighting the mercurial sea and river and the saltiness of the soil. Learn how they built dikes and embankments to expand their farms and other ways they figured out how to endure at the Musée de la Camargue , about 20 miles south of Arles. This museum, filled with innovative exhibits, is housed in a typical bergerie (sheepfold) dating from 1812. Outside, walking trails leads into the countryside beyond.

Walk on the Walls of a Crusader Town

Some say Aigues-Mortes , looming above the Camargue’s flat landscape, is an off-the-beaten-path version of Carcassonne. The walled medieval town dates back to the mid-13th century when Louis IX built it as a staging point for his Crusade to reconquer the Holy Land. On August 28, 1248, his fleet of 1,500 ships took off from here on an eight-year expedition that failed. He tried again in 1270 when he died in Tunisia. Despite these fiascos, the town remained France’s most important Mediterranean port until Marseille became a part of France in the late 15th century. Today, Aigues-Mortes is considered Europe’s best-preserved wall fortifications, with sites including La Tour Constance, the royal tower that served as a lighthouse and later a prison; the spectacular medieval ramparts, built by Louis IX’s son; and two 17th-century chapels. Come here to stroll the ancient streets, pop into galleries and local restaurants, and take in the vast history.

Stay at a Working Manade

There’s no better way to feel the pulse of this region than to stay on a working ranch, where you can experience the life of the gardians who have worked this unforgiving landscape for generations. Some offer trail rides, opportunities to work alongside the gardians , and local feasts. Most are located on acres of land where bulls and horses roam. There are many good choices, including La Manade des Baumelles , where prize-winning bulls are bred; and Mas de Peint/La Manade Jacques Bon , where you are invited to help sort bulls.

Pay Homage to Three Marys

Towering above the Camargue’s main town of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, the Romanesque Église Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer is named for the three Marys—Mary Salome, mother of the apostles James and John; Mary Jacobe, the Virgin Mary’s sister; and Mary Magdalene—who, legend states, washed ashore here after being shoved out to sea without sails or oars following Jesus’s crucifixion. Their supposed relics are preserved in the church’s cavelike crypt, where hundreds of thanksgiving votives flicker in the darkness. Here, too, a statue of the Marys’ Egyptian servant Sarah, the revered patron saint of the Roma (an ethnic group of itinerary people originally from northern India that live predominantly in Europe), is preserved, garbed with piles of dresses provided as offerings. On May 24 and 25, thousands of Roma pilgrimage here to worship Sarah. Be sure to climb up to the church’s rooftop terrace, offering fabulous views over the distant sea.

Visit a Salt Pan

The Camargue’s saltiness is a challenge for farmers, but it also has its upsides— fleur de mer. That’s the gourmet salt packaged under the label Le Saunier de Camargue (among others) that is coarse, delicately perfumed, and coveted by chefs around the globe. The Romans were the first to harvest the salt here, which continues with saulniers —salt farmers—today. Take note: It’s harvested by hand , which explains its pretty price. You can explore by car or on your own, via D36, which will take you to the village of Salin de Giraud and the surrounding salt pans and salt mountains. Or visit by sightseeing train, electric vehicle, or mountain bike.

Sample Camargue Gastronomy

The Camargue is the only place in France where rice is grown (which became very important during the lean World War II years). There are three varieties—white, black, and red, with the world-famous red being granted protected geographical indication (PGI) status in 2000. This explains why one of the favorite local dishes is paella, often cooked outdoors in giant, cast-iron pans. Compared to its Spanish cousin, paella Camarguaise is creamier, sprinkled with chicken and shrimp, with the nutty rice adding a flavor all its own. And, sorry to say, those majestic bulls roaming the fields find themselves on the platter as well, often as a cooked-to-perfection, wine-laced stew ( gardianne de taureau ). There’s also the emblematic tellines —a small shellfish residing in the estuaries and plenty of other seafood. Restaurants throughout the region offer these and other local specialties, though if you have time for only one, it should be the Michelin-starred La Chassagnette in Le Sambuc, where a former student of Alain Ducasse works his culinary magic.

Spring and autumn bird-watching

The Camargue region includes a large UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve, where each year, especially during spring and autumn, the region’s wetlands host thousands of migrating birds. At these two times of the year, bird watchers hope to catch those who flock to the Camargue in spring to mate after a winter in Africa, and those that journey from more northern parts of Europe to a milder climate in the autumn.

Flamingos: The emblem of the Camargue

Pink flamingos are, without a doubt, the most emblematic species to the region. Whiling away the days in the sallow spots of the park’s wetlands, the Camargue ‘s flamingos can be spotted all year round. North of Saintes Marie de la Mer, at the heart of the natural park, is the Ornithological Park of Pont de Gau , a bird park that has miles of trails for ambling and where you’ll easily spot these beautiful birds.

Flamingos in the Camargue

Aside from the birds, there are lots of mammals to spot in the landscape. Coypu, boar, fox and sometimes you might catch a glimpse of a beaver.

Beverrat in the Camargue

The Camargue is home to around 350 species of birds, including migratory ones. From Eurasian Spoonbill to White Stalk and Grey Heron, whichever corner of the park you’re exploring, make sure to bring binoculars and a guide book.

The black bulls of the Camargue

The black bulls of the Camargue have been reared by the cowboys of the region for centuries. Raised for traditional bullfights or to export to Spain, they are a big part of the daily life of the Camargue . Unlike Spanish bullfights , where spectators watch the fight between a bull and its matador, the bullfights of the Camargue – Course Camarguaise – are all about agility. Dressed all-white, men try to sneak ribbons or tassels off the black bull’s horns.

Black bulls of the Camargue

The salts of the Camargue

Salt production is also a main focus in the Camargue , along with its horses and bulls. South of the village of Salin de Giraud is where you’ll get the best views of these incredible pastel-coloured salt pans . If you’re interested in a tour, Salins du Midi salt company in Aigues-Mortes – which each year produces 500,000 tonnes of salt – is open to the public and organises tours.

Exploring the Camargue on horseback

Though the Camargue horses might look wild as they roam the landscape with barely any fences, they’re mostly all used by the gardians for herding or trekking. Visitors to the Camargue will easily be able to explore the area on horseback with riding stables situated along most of the commonly used roads in the park, especially around Les Saintes Marie de la Mer. You don’t need to be a pro and the cost isn’t dear.

Equine Photo Expedition 21.-24.09.2023

Camargue tour.

The Camargue is probably the most iconic destination for photographers. Everybody knows the photos of white horses splashing through the water, impressive black bulls and pink flamingos. And now is your chance to be part of it and fulfil your photographic dreams! Join me for a 4 day tour to the Camargue in late summer setting. Next to the classic photo sessions at the beach with Camargue horses, we will also photograph beautiful Lusitano horses and in more magnificent places.

FOR VIDEOGRAPHERS & WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHERS

This tour offers a perfect opportunity into the realm of horse photography / videography, due its natural settings. The choice of sessions, locations and breeds allows for a wide variety and experience.

21.-24.09.2023

min. 4 max. 8 persons

Fitness Level

Easy, walking required

  • Expedition date
  • 21.-24. Septemberl 2023, 4 days
  • Start and End in Arles, Southern France
  • Min. 4 / max. 8 Persons
  • This tour will start with a pick up in Arles, Southern France to our home base, from where we will make our half day trips all over the Camargue.
  • Be ready for 2 photo sessions a day and return with a full hard drive full of wonderful photos.
  • We are planning multiple photo sessions (2x day) in the natural scenery of the Camargue with mostly free horses / liberty work
  • The locations feature exclusive photo shootings on the beach and sea, in the swamps of the delta, with architecture and the picturesque coastal and provençal landscape.
  • 2x Theoretical classes: Basic workflow with Adobe Lightroom and how to retouch photo halters and live editing of one of the pictures taken during the day

camargue horse tour

Informations

  • We will have mainly staged photo sessions with portraits, herds and free roaming horses sessions. You can’t do nothing wrong with your standard 70-200 mm Iens, but I strongly encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and take the opportunity to try out new lenses.
  • To include landscapes, water reflections and architecture, a 35 mm is a good choice, and to be more flexible a 24-105 mm or similar zoom is a great alternative.
  • For wildlife shots and free horses I recommend 100-400 mm lenses. More tele zoom would only be necessary, if you also plan to photograph wildlife / birds.
  • You may bring your laptop for the theoretical class and to store your photos.
  • Mid September offers a mild late summer weather, with fresh mornings and evenings.
  • We will have photo shoots on the beach or in other "water" locations. You can access the beach barefoot, for other places you might need (over knee) rubber boots. In the grass field of the delta rubber boots / waterproof boots are recommended. Or simply enough socks, pants, shoes, to change.
  • Bring protection against mosquitos for the early morning or evening sessions by the water
  • On flat plains, beach sessions or big pastures it is required to walk a lot to reach the destination.
  • We will take pictures in any weather, except in thunder storms or unbearable weather. Weather in the mountains or close by the sea can be extreme and slightly unpredictable, but safety is more important than being struck by lightning for a horse photo. Worst case, the sessions on exposed areas must be cancelled or switched.
  • The Expedition is very intense and we will spend much time together. For this reason I reserve the right to pick the best candidate for a tour, to ensure we will get along well.
  • Accommodation & Food
  • We will sleep in shared rooms (double) in a house with beautiful view
  • We are self-catering, but our house has a well equipped kitchen.
  • There will be enough space for us to work
  • I will speak English, German or French depending on the group requirements.

Exciting and unique

What to expect.

During the past years I have made many contacts to amazing horses and people in different parts of Europe. For my unique horse photo tour Expeditions, I will put together one highlight after another. Our horse models will be mostly local horse breeds with a special focus on rare and endangered breeds. Each Expedition in unique and I don’t plan to repeat them in the following years.

Think outside the box

What you can learn.

The Equine Photo Expedition is not like a workshop. We don’t have any theoretical classes, but focus on travelling, exploring and discovering new locations, amazing horses and the best scenery the place offers. But this doesn’t exclude any learnings! We will share experiences and give each other insights in our workflow, by spending time with each other and work together. Before embarking the tour we will have a preparation call to get to know and clear things up. A harmonic and social group is crucial to a successful trip together as a group. I strongly encourage you to step out of your photographic comfort zone and experiment with new techniques, lenses and angles during the tour.

I was fortunate to be accompanied by these amazing photographers. Here’s what they say.

Danke <3

Monika Bogner

Adventurous, exhausting and awesome.

This is probably the best way to describe the Alm-weekend. If you are looking for locations that you can't reach by car, but only by foot, a tour with Cécile during the Almsummer is the right choice. In addition to unique horses and locations, you will also get an insight into her way of working with horses and an honest exchange (if you like). For me it was a very successful weekend with many special impressions, a lot of kisses from the two four-legged family members of Cécile and lots of new pictures on the hard drive. It won't be the last time 🙂

Laura Julia Mann

Meet The Camargue Horse, One Of The Oldest Breeds In The World

Modified: Sep 15, 2020 by ihearthorses · This post may contain affiliate links ·

If you ever have the opportunity to visit Southern France, be sure to take in the Camargue Natural Park.  Located by the Mediterranean Sea, the park is full of wetlands and marshes. However, what draws the horse enthusiasts and photographers to the park are the Camargue horse herds. Visitors from all over the world go to view and photograph these beautiful, intelligent, graceful horses. So, we decided to take a look at the history of these beautiful horses and what makes them so unique.

Camargue white horse, Camargue, France

The history of the Camargue horse

Southern France was proven to be the home of prehistoric horses.  The Camargue horse is thought to carry this lineage.  Archaeological finds from the Burgundy area of France reinforce this fact. This evidence makes the Camargue horse breed one of the oldest breeds in the world, having been around for thousands of years.

Legend states that the Camargue was a present from Neptune to be man's faithful companion. It wasn't until 1976 that the French government set standards for the breed. Eventually, in 1978, a studbook was established.  Today, the horse breed is bred under the standards and strict rules of the association.  This is an effort to keep this ancient breed of horses as pure as possible.

The Biological Research Station of la Tour du Valat oversees and protects the horses.  There are still wild herds, but some horses have been domesticated and are used for many different riding disciplines.  Additionally, these horses are semi-protected in Camargue National Park.

Characteristics of the Camargue horse

Brown at birth, the Camargue horse changes to the traditional white color around the age of four. Genetically this is considered a grey color. This is why some of the horses do not appear a pure white. At an average height of 13 to 14 hands, the Camargue horse falls into the category of a pony. Like the primitive horse, Camargue horses have heavy square heads.

gray horse

Much like the North American Mustang, centuries of natural selection has enabled the Camargue horses to become resilient. They are able to survive the substandard nutrition and the sometimes-hostile conditions of the marshes they live in. Despite being short in stature, these horses are sturdy, can easily travel long distances, go extended periods without food, and withstand hazardous conditions. They are ideal horses for endurance and trail riding.

Over the centuries, history tells us that several different armies have inhabited the area. The horses brought in by the soldiers has had some influence on the Camargue horse.

Herd of White Camargue Horses running on the water . Parc Regional de Camargue - Provence, France

There is evidence of Arabian and Barb horse breeds visible in the shape of some of the horses' heads and conformation.  The horses' stout, rugged bodies have straight shoulders, a deep chest, and a short back.  They weigh around 650 to 900 pounds.  Additionally, this weight is carried on powerful, capable legs.

The necessity to adapt to a wet environment has made the breed’s feet evolve into broad, healthy hooves that withstand moisture.  They are also less likely to develop the hoof problems of other breeds of horses. Because of this, it is not necessary to put horseshoes on these horses.  Nicknamed "the horse of the sea," these horses love the water, another effect of living in the marshes.

A part of the culture

Playing a large part in the Camargue culture, there is evidence of the Camargue horse at every turn.  The herdsmen of the Camargue region are called Gardians.  They live similar lives to the traditional North American cowboy of the 1800s. Additionally, they play a big part in carrying on Camarguais traditions.  Their mount of choice is the Camargue horses.

Their even-temperament, sturdy nature, and bravery make Camargue horses ideal for herding the Camargue bulls of the region.  These feral bulls are often used for bullfighting in southern France.

Whether you are a photographer wanting to catch the majesty of the wild horse on film or a horse lover that wants a chance to view one of the oldest breeds on earth, a trip to southern France would be worth the time and effort.

Booking Details

The Camargue Horses Photo Workshop 2024

Dates:  for 2024

  • Spring 2024 – April 26th – 30th
  • Autumn 2025 – TBA

Who is this for?

The trip will be of great interest to both seasoned photographers and those new to photographing birdlife and the semi wild horses of the Camargue.

Whatever your level of experience you will be guided through how best to capture images.

A minimum of four participants are required for this photo workshop.

  • The Camargue Horses Workshop

The goal of this workshop is to capture the stunning beauty of the wild Camargue horses as they gallop through the salt lagoons in the early morning sunlight. However we will also be photographing the birdlife including the wonderfully flamboyant pink flamingos, the uniqueness of this rugged location and the extraordinary light of the south of France.

With an area of over 930 km2 (360 sq mi), the Camargue is western Europe’s largest river delta. It is a vast plain comprising large salt lagoons or étangs , cut off from the sea by sandbars and encircled by reed-covered marshes. These are in turn surrounded by a large cultivated area. Approximately a third of the Camargue is either lakes or marshland. The central area around the shoreline of the Étang de Vaccarès has been protected as a regional park since 1927, in recognition of its great importance as a haven for wild birds. In 2008, it was incorporated into the larger Parc naturel régional de Camargue. The Camargue is home to more than 400 species of birds, its salt lagoons provide one of the few European habitats for the greater flamingo. The marshes are also a prime habitat for many species of insects, notably (and notoriously) some of the most ferocious mosquitos to be found anywhere in France – don’t forget that insect repellent.

Camargue horses (Camarguais) roam the extensive marshlands, along with Camargue cattle – Manade, free running bulls. The Camargue horse is an ancient breed of horse indigenous to the Camargue area in southern France. Its origins remain relatively unknown, although it is generally considered one of the oldest breed of horses in the world. For centuries these small horses have lived wild in the harsh environment of the Camargue marshes and wetlands of the Rhône delta, here they developed the stamina, hardiness and agility for which they are known today. Traditionally, they live in semi-feral conditions in the marshy land of the region. The Camargue horse is the traditional mount of the gardians, the Camargue “cowboys” who herd the black Camargue bulls. Camargue horses galloping through water is a popular and romantic image of the region, the image that we will try our best to recreate.

Boris Pasternak's museum house

Guided tour of Pasternak's museum housein Peredelkino village

Pasternak’s “important achievement both in contemporary lyrical poetry and in the field of the great Russian epic tradition" was honored with a Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958. For many readers outside Russia, Pasternak is known mainly as the author of the touching historical novel Doctor Zhivago written in 1957. The novel as a whole communicates the haphazard, uncertain and chaotic quality of life caused by the Russian Revolution and the heroic case of quiet humanism demonstrated by a single person.

Pasternak’s translations of Georgian poets favored by Joseph Stalin probably saved his life during the purges of the 1930’s. However, the individualistic Pasternak was not suited to the Soviet artistic climate when art was required to have a clear socialism-inspired agenda and so Russian publishers were unwilling to print Pasternak’s novel. In fact, Doctor Zhivago first appeared in Italy in 1957.

Pasternak won his Nobel Prize the following year. Despite Pasternak politely declining his Nobel Prize quoting: “because of the significance given to this award in the society to which I belong”, the award nevertheless spread his fame well beyond Russia. He ended his life in virtual exile in an artist's community in Peredelkino village. His last poems are devoted to love, to freedom and to reconciliation with God.

Pasternak was rehabilitated posthumously in 1987. In 1988, after being banned for three decades, "Doctor Zhivago" was published in the USSR. In 1989 Pasternak's son accepted his father's Nobel medal in Stockholm.

Pastenak loved his house in Peredelkino, the house and surrounding nature featuring in his poetry. The poet considered the cycle of poems "Peredelkino", which he completed in the spring of 1941, to be his best work. The poet spent the first difficult months of the war in Peredelkino; he completed the novel "Doctor Zhivago" here, wrote the Lara poems and translated Shakespeare and Goethe. It was in this house that he learned he was to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature on October 23rd 1958. He died here on May 30 1960.

The house in Peredelkino only acquired the status of a museum in 1990, thirty years after the poet's death and a century after his birth. The museum has fully preserved the environment and atmosphere of the house where Boris Pasternak lived and worked. The director of the museum is Elena Pasternak, grandaughter of Boris Pasternak.

The Assumption Belfry and Ivan the Great Bell Tower

The Assumption Belfry and Ivan the Great Bell Tower

View from a corner of Assumption Cathedral on the architectural ensemble of the Assumption Belfry (at the left) and Ivan the Great Bell Tower (at the right) built in the Moscow Kremlin in 16th century. The tower’s name implies that it had once housed St. John’s Church, and that it used to be the tallest building in Moscow (height with cross is about 80 m). For many decades the bell tower was also the main watchtower in the Kremlin, and later also a fire tower. Petrok Maliy, the Italian architect who built the Kitai-Gorod wall in Moscow, started the construction of the church of the Resurrection, later renamed Church of the Nativity, next to the Ivan the Great Tower in 1532. Decades later was converted to a four-tier belfry for large bells, known today as the Assumption Belfry after its main 64-ton bell placed in the middle of the fourth tier. The Assumption bell tolled only on great holidays and to announce events of exceptional significance.
