The Guinness Storehouse In Dublin: The Tours, History + What To Expect

A visit to the Guinness Storehouse is one of the most popular things to do in Dublin and it’s the most-visited of the many paid tourist attractions in Ireland .

Located at St James’s Gate, the Guinness Factory sits on the site where Arthur Guinness set up shop with a 9,000-year lease in 1759.

There are several different Guinness Brewery tours to head off on, and we’ll take you through the best of the bunch in this guide.

You’ll also get some handy visitor info (e.g. try and visit late afternoon!) along with the history of the Guinness Brewery in Dublin and more. Dive on in!

Table of Contents

Some quick need-to-knows before you visit the Guinness Storehouse

Although the Guinness tour is fairly straightforward, there are a few need-to-knows that’ll make your visit that bit more enjoyable.

1. Location

The Guinness factory is located slightly off Dublin’s south quays here . It’s a 15-minute walk from St. Patrick’s Cathedral , a 20-minute walk from Kilmainham Gaol and  very  short walk from some of the best whiskey distilleries in Dublin .

2. Book online to avoid the queues

So, you can just rock up and buy tickets for the Guinness tour on the day, but you’ll likely have to queue (the queues here are often very long). So, it’s worth buying your Guinness tour tickets online in advance. More on this below.

3. Opening Hours

The Guinness factory opening hours are Monday to Friday, 10 am-5 pm, Saturday, 9:30 am-6 pm, and Sundays from 9:30 am to 5 pm. If you book your Guinness tour tickets online, you’ll need to pick a specific time.

So, there’s some very limited free parking at the Guinness Storehouse on Crane Street, ( see it here  on Google Maps). There’s paid parking near the Four Courts here (15-minute walk away).

5. Part of the Dublin Pass

Exploring Dublin over 1 or 2 days? If you buy a Dublin Pass for €70 you can save from €23.50 to €62.50 on Dublin’s top attractions, like the EPIC Museum, the Guinness Storehouse, The GPO, the Jameson Distillery Bow St. and more (info here ).

The History of the Guinness Brewery in Dublin

guinness history

Photos in the Public Domain

When you visit the Guinness Brewery in Dublin, you’re treading on hallowed ground! It was the original site where Arthur Guinness began his brewery business in 1759.

Planning for the future, he signed a 9,000-year lease at £45 per annum and started brewing his dark porter-style ales. He used dark malt to create his stout, which was instantly a favourite with river and street porters, among other local workers.

Then things escalated

Ten years later, he decided to begin exporting, shipping a modest 6.5 barrels to England, and the rest, as they say, is history. By 1886, Guinness sales reached 1.13 million barrels a year, and the company was floated on the stock market.

That was in spite of the fact that Guinness owned no bars or pubs and refused to advertise (this changed drastically over time). The product spoke for itself.

The decline and joining up with Diageo

In the 1970s, Guinness sales had declined, so the owners had to relaunch it and introduce pale malt. The company merged with Diageo in 1997 but retained the Guinness brand’s rights and trademarked the Irish harp logo.

Now, in early-2024, Guinness is a roaring success both at home and overseas. However, not all pints are equal – see our guide to finding the best Guinness in Dublin for more.

The different Guinness Storehouse tours

As I mentioned before, we’ve done the Guinness Storehouse tour several times over the years. They come in the guided (during ‘normal’ times) and self-guided form.

Having done both, I can’t recommend the guided tour of the Guinness Storehouse enough. The tour guides are brilliant, and you’ll just have a more enjoyable experience.

1. Guinness Storehouse Experience (€30)

This is arguably the most popular Guinness Factory tour, as it involves polishing off your visit with a pint in the Gravity Bar.

This self-guided tour (affiliate link) costs €30 and it should take you around 1.5 hours from start to finish, depending on how long you linger. Here’s what it involves:

  • A Guinness (18 +) or a soft drink in the Gravity Bar
  • You get to ramble around the Guinness Brewery
  • Experience Canvas D8; a summer programme of culture and art
  • A guaranteed timed entrance

2. Guinness Storehouse Experience + Guinness Academy (€38)

This tour includes everything in the storehouse experience, with the one incredible addition of learning how to pour your own pint in the Guinness Academy.

This version of the Guinness Factory tour costs €38 and, with the addition of the Guinness Academy, is pretty similar to the first tour. It includes:

  • Tuition in the Guinness Academy where you will learn to pour a pint

3. The Jameson + Guinness tour combo (€97)

Now, the final tour (affiliate link) will suit those of you that plan on also visiting the Jameson Distillery on Bow St .

This is a combo, skip-the-line ticket that includes both attractions. It starts around €97 , and it includes the best of both tours. Here’s what you get:

  • Timed skip-the-line entrance to the Jameson Distillery
  • Timed skip-the-line entrance to the Guinness Storehouse tour
  • 2 drinks (pint of Guinness + 1 Jameson)
  • Photo stop outside the Brazen Head (the oldest pub in Dublin)

You’ll often see the Guinness Factory mentioned in guides to the best museums in Dublin . This puzzles some, but it is a museum of sorts.

The Storehouse is home to fixtures from the Guinness Brewery’s original days. Interestingly enough, some of these are from over 250 years ago.

3. Old-school Guinness ads

Immerse yourself in 80 years of Guinness advertising – you’ll be surprised at some of the memories it brings back! Interact with the ads and take selfies that put you in your very own Guinness ad.

Tour aside, there are plenty of other things to do at the Guinness Storehouse that’ll make your visit an enjoyable one.

From tasting and learning to your face on a pint (yes, your face  on  a pint) and more, there’s a little bit of something to tickle every fancy.

There’s a definite art to pouring the perfect pint, and the Guinness Academy is the place to learn it for yourself.

Get behind the bar and follow instructions from the Beer Specialist on hand, who will give you some useful tips. You’ll be able to tell a bad pint of Guinness from a good one from then on!

3. The STOUTie

Within the STOUTie Room walls, guests can purchase a second glass of Guinness and see their own Selfie smiling up from the creamy head.

It’s a unique moment combining the latest technology with a little extra malt extract for a picture-perfect pint!

4. Enjoy a Pint at the Gravity Bar

The Gravity Bar is one of the most unique rooftop bars in Dublin and it’s the perfect place to linger over a pint or try one of the experimental brews.

The panoramic views through the wall of glass add to this unforgettable experience. You can also see a specially commissioned artwork by Irish street artist, Aches.

Places to visit nearby after the Guinness Factory tour

One of the beauties of the Guinness tour is that, when you’re finished, you’re a short distance away from some of the best places to visit in Dublin .

Below, you’ll find a handful of things to see and do a stone’s throw from the Guinness Storehouse (plus places to eat and where to grab a post-adventure pint!).

1. Whiskey distilleries (3 to 6-minute walk)

roe and co distillery

If the Guinness tour has you thirsty for more alcohol activities, you’re in luck – some of the top whiskey distilleries in Ireland are a short walk away. Roe and Co (6-minute walk), Pearse Lyons (5-minute walk) and the Teeling distillery (15-minute walk) are all nearby.

2. Dublin’s Oldest pub (10-minute walk)

Very much the reigning champion of ancient pubs in Dublin , and by some distance! Just a 10-minute walk from the Guinness Factory and Proudly boasting on a scroll of painted parchment on the pub’s whitewashed walls that it dates back to 1198, the Brazen Head is Dublin’s oldest pub and is also one of its most popular. See our guide to the oldest pubs in Dublin for more.

3. Phoenix Park (15-minute walk)

Dominated by the 200ft tall Wellington Monument, Phoenix Park is an enormous space and one of the largest enclosed public parks in any capital city in Europe (the Wellington Monument is also the largest obelisk in Europe!). Make the 15-minute stroll across the Liffey and up Wolfe Tone Quay to explore its vast expanse. It’s also home to Dublin Zoo and Áras an Uachtaráin .

4. Kilmainham Gaol (20-minute walk)

Infamous for being the site of incarceration for many Nationalist leaders, Kilmainham Gaol has played a hugely significant and symbolic part in Irish history and the prison is well worth a visit. It is absolutely worth taking a Guinness tour while you’re in Dublin! Taking a Guinness tour in Dublin is as much a rite of passage as it is an education in beer brewing and Irish history.

The tour not only provides you with a fascinating insight into the making of the iconic stout that has the world smitten, but you also get a birds-eye view of Dublin city from the Gravity Bar, with a complimentary pint in hand.

The journey from barley to beer is beautifully narrated and presented, making it an immersive cultural experience that shouldn’t be missed. It’s not just about the beer at the Guinness Storehouse, it’s about the stories, the history, the people, and the pride that’s poured into every pint!

The self-guided Guinness tour at the Dublin Storehouse is 2 hours long, however, brewmasters recommend spending a minimum of 90 minutes drinking in the historic past of this iconic beer, while sipping away on a cold pint yourself throughout the tour.

Of the tours I mentioned above that include visits to the Storehouse itself, all of them include guided portions as well as self-guided portions as you make your way through the Gravity Bar. You can spend as little or as long as you want, but the self-guided tour typically lasts between 1-2 hours.

Is There a Dress Code for Guinness Storehouse?

guinness brewery tours dublin ireland

Long pants, long-sleeved shirts, and closed-toed shoes are the required dress code for the Guinness Factory tour .

Regardless of which Guinness tour Dublin piques your interest, tourists who fail to properly dress for the occasion may be denied entry into certain areas of the tour.

What Does the Guinness Storehouse Tour Include?

During The Guinness Storehouse Tour, visitors will be treated to an interactive journey across seven floors, surrounding the central glass atrium shaped like a pint of Guinness.

Is Guinness in Dublin Different from Elsewhere in the World?

Coming from someone who drank a lot of Guinness in Ireland as well as other parts of the world, Guinness is definitely different in the country as a whole when compared globally.

It’s lighter, more refreshing, and it simply tastes better. Makes sense, right? I mean, anything that’s brewed right in front of you is likely going to have a cleaner, and overall better taste!

Is Guinness Good in Dublin?

The average pint of Guinness will run you about €5.50 – €6.50 across most Dublin pubs and bars, while the price for a pint in the Guinness Storehouse is slightly more expensive at around €7.

guinness brewery tours dublin ireland

To order a Guinness in Dublin, you can simply say “I’ll have a pint” or something similar. It’s the most ordered beverage country-wide, so the bartender will likely know to what you are referring.

↪️ Pro Tip: Just be sure to order all of your stouts first so they have time to settle. Otherwise, the bartender may give you an earful if you order 6 Bulmers and a Guinness at the end.

Guinness Storehouse Dublin Ticket Prices

Guinness tours in Dublin often pour a shamrock on the head of thw Guinness before serving

If you decide to skip the Guinness tour altogether and just pay for entry to the Storehouse on your own, here is the ticket cost breakdown:

Guinness Storehouse Experience – €22

Guinness Academy Experience – €34

STOUTie Experience – €30

Connoisseur Experience – €95

Each of these different “experiences” offers unique tastings and inclusions (like your selfie printed on the head – also known as the foam on top of the Guinness – during the STOUTie Experience), but none rival the adventures that accompany the tour groups guided by the local Irishmen.

If you’re looking to immerse yourself in Irish culture, be surrounded by traditional Irish music, and share the experience with some friendly locals, then don’t consider skipping one of the tours I mentioned above.

Can You Go to the Guinness Gravity Bar without a Tour?

guinness brewery tours dublin ireland

Unfortunately, anyone not on the premises for a Guinness Storehouse tour will not be allowed to enter the Gravity Bar.

Owing to the nature of the storefront and the operations that take place to keep guests moving efficiently while enjoying all there is to see, allowing anyone not on a tour to hang out at the bar for hours on end would disrupt the flow of guests and take away from the overall in-house experience.

Fortunately, if you simply want to sit back and enjoy a few rounds of Guinness, there are literally hundreds of nearby pubs that will allow you to do just that! But, if you want to enter the Gravity Bar at the Guinness Storehouse, you’ll be required to enter via a guided tour.

When is the Guinness Storehouse Open?

Monday through Friday the Guinness Storehouse opening hours are from 10AM to 5PM and Saturdays and Sundays the Storehouse is open from 9:30AM to 5PM.

It’s also important to note that the last admission to the Storehouse occurs at 5PM on the dot.

Where is the Guinness Factory in Ireland?

guinness brewery tours dublin ireland

Fortunately for travelers, the Guinness Factory is located in Dublin, Ireland just a mere 30-minute car ride from the country’s main international airport!

How Far is the Guinness Storehouse from Dublin?

Depending on which route you take, the Guinness Storehouse is between 10-15 miles from the airport which takes about 25-40 minutes to get to during high traffic times.

If you’re coming from the Dublin Airport (DUB), then there are actually a few different routes you can take to get to the Guinness Storehouse.

Assuming you have a rental vehicle, you can stay on the main freeways (M50, R148, and R810) and go around the city which is actually usually about 10-15 minutes faster than following the most direct path through Dublin’s city center. Thanks to the one million pedestrians and heavy car traffic you’ll find in the city, you’ll want to avoid that route if possible.

The journey around the city is a bit farther in distance (about 15 miles/24km compared to 10 miles/16km) than the route that cuts right through the city, but you’ll be avoiding lots of one-way streets, heavy pedestrian and car traffic, and all of the lights and stop signs.

What is the History Behind the Guinness Factory?

How do I Pour the Perfect Pint of Guinness?

While no one can deny my skills at drinking the perfect pint of Guinness, I am absolutely no master at pouring one.

Therefore, here’s a great video from Alan who works at the Gravity Bar in Dublin who is going to explain exactly how to pour your very own perfect pint of Guinness when you arrive!

Guinness Storehouse Discount Tickets and Groupons

The best Guinness tour Dublin has to offer includes multiple tastings

If you’re like me and you are always looking for a discount code or hoping to save some euros here or there, I totally get it.

Unfortunately, as far as the Guinness tour Dublin comes up with as the perfect fit for you and your trip, it’s pretty unlikely you’re going to find any discount codes.

I have found some in the past, but they ended up being for tour operators that I haven’t listed in this post for good reason . Do yourself a favor and look to save money elsewhere on your trip to Ireland.

Your experience is going to be directly impacted by the amount that you spend in this case, so it’s worth budgeting for the extra money here.

Taking a Guinness Brewery Tour is one of the most popular things to do in Dublin .  When visiting the Irish capital, you just have to sample some of the country’s most famous beverage – Guinness. There really is no place better to try a pint of this well-loved beer than at the original source.

The Guinness storehouse dates all the way back to 1759, where it was founded by Arthur Guinness . Since then, you can’t pass a pub anywhere in Ireland where they aren’t proudly pouring this stout. So if you are visiting Dublin , be sure to tick this significant activity off your list.

Activities to do in Dublin Guinness Storehouse

The historic Guinness factory is located right in the heart of St James’s Gate. Since 1759, this has been the home of Guinness – where Arthur Guinness signed a 9000-year lease! The actual Guinness Storehouse, where the tour takes place, was once the brewery’s fermentation plant. This building goes back to 1904.

This Guinness tour and tasting experience will give anyone a complete understanding of this beverage. Not only will you get to see and learn about the production of this beer, but you will also get to taste it in the perfect setting. The tour includes some interesting sights and experiences.

If you are interested in learning about a massive part of Irish cultural heritage, then you just have to visit the Guinness Brewery Dublin. Even if you are not a massive beer fan, this experience is well worth doing for the view at the end in the Gravity Bar!

About the Guinness Tour

This brewery tour is one of the most iconic attractions in Dublin. Whether you love the famous stout, or just want to experience a unique Irish landmark, then this tour is a must.

The Guinness Storehouse is a 7-story building. The tour covers the entire place, allowing you to learn everything there is to know about Ireland’s favourite drink.

Guinness Brewery Tour

The tour involves a completely interactive journey through this building – teaching you absolutely everything you could imagine about Ireland’s beer brewing heritage and history. The tour is self-guided, so you can choose to take it at whatever pace you like.

You get to see some really amazing things during this tour, such as a blue indoor waterfall from the Wicklow Mountains, and walls with barley growing on them. There is also a room modelled after the old ships that used to transport Guinness. Another highlight is all of the old ad campaigns on display.

Some of the different themes that the tour covers include history, production, ingredients and recipes, the craft of brewing, distribution and transport, advertising and Guinness sponsorships. You will also get to learn how to pour the perfect pint and can choose to do the connoisseur tasting experience.

Each floor will unveil new stories around the history and life of Guinness. You will get to learn about how Guinness has become one of the world’s favourite beers. The tour also focuses on the beer’s creator.

Guinness Brewery Tour Highlights

As this tour covers a large area, there are many exciting things to expect along the way. Here are some highlights of the experience.

The World’s Largest Pint Glass

The Guinness factory tour starts at the glass atrium. This is the very bottom of the world’s largest pint glass.

To put this massive glass into perspective, it would hold 1 million regular pints of Guinness! Taking a tour through a gigantic beer glass is definitely a unique Irish experience.

Guinness Brewery Tour

Gravity Bar

Enjoy a multi-sensory tasting experience at the very top of the Guinness Storehouse. After climbing your way up the building, learning all about this beer, there is nothing better than finally enjoying a taste of it.

The Gravity Bar is the brewery’s own special bar – a worthwhile attraction to visit in itself. This bar offers unbelievable sweeping views over Dublin. With the Guinness Storehouse below you and St James all around you, there is no better place to raise a glass of the top Irish stout.

The tasting experience here will really allow you to appreciate and enjoy this famous black brew.

The Cooperage Cafe

Located on the first floor, the Cooperage Cafe is the perfect place to line the stomach pre- or post-tour. Delicious coffee, pastries and sandwiches can be enjoyed here. If you need some quick fuel, then this cafe is always a favourite.

Before leaving your Guinness tours, make sure to stop off at the fantastic souvenir shop. The store should definitely be explored before leaving the brewery in order to secure that perfect keepsake.

From pint glasses to rugby balls, there is plenty of Guinness merchandise to help remember your Dublin adventure.

Guinness Storehouse in Dublin – The Ultimate Tasting Tour

Written By: The Planet D

There’s a reason the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin is Ireland’s most famous visitor attraction. Not only is the home of Guinness ; the world’s most famous stout, the tour itself is fun and fascinating. Plus, you get to taste a lot of Guinness, so it’s a win-win!

Table of Contents

History of Guinness

guinness storehouse dublin tours

Started by Arthur Guinness in 1759, Guinness has been a staple of Ireland ever since. Located in the heart of Dublin at St. James’s Gate Brewery, Guinness signed a 9,000-year lease to operate his brewery on the premises.

Great Guinness Storehouse Tours

A Guinness Brewery tour should be put to the top of anyone’s travel itinerary. We used Get Your Guide when booking city tours. Guided tours offer skip the line tickets to the visitor experience , and free cancellation within 24 hours for most tours.

About The Guinness Tour

guiness storehouse dublin

The tour begins at the “Seal of Guinness” where Arthur Guinness signed his famous 9,000-year lease. Guides take you through the multilevel storehouse showing how the Guinness Stout is made from the barrel house to the fermentation plant. It all ends with a frosty pint at the bar.

Water from the Wicklow Mountains

guinness storehouse tour water

Once you learn about the early beginnings, you are lead to a blue waterfall where the freshwater from the Wicklow Mountains is pumped into the brewery.

Dave and I have always said that Guinness definitely tastes better in Ireland and something tells me it’s because of the Wicklow water. The tour showcases the natural ingredients of Guinness in detail. Barley plants are actually growing on the walls!

Guinness Casks – Firkins

guinness storehouse tour kegs

Your Guinness Storehouse Tour then takes you to the Cooperage and Transport floor to learn of how casks are made and transported.

Have you ever heard of the word Firkin? In Toronto, we have Firkin pubs all over the city and I never knew what it meant. The word Firkin is the size of a cask. It’s like a keg only smaller.

Tasting Tour of Guinness

guide to the guinness storehouse

The factory tour is fun, but let’s face it, we are all here to drink Guinness. The tasting room is the best brewery tour setting on the planet with dry ice and neon lights adding to the mood. The hallway leads to a stark white tasting room with smoke billowing out of slender containers.

The containers aren’t just for show, each container is filled with the aromas of Guinness. The smell of barley, malt, hops, and yeast fills the air. It’s as delicious as you ever could have expected.

guinness beer tour dublin

Once you are finished in the white room, it’s on to the next room that feels more like the inside of a grand ship than a beer tour. That’s because it is modeled after the ships that transported Guinness to the mainland. You can even ring the bell from the ship Lady Miranda Guinness that used to transport Guinness from Dublin to Liverpool.

Guinness in Advertising

guinness tours dublin

One of my favourite exhibits in the Guinness Storehouse was the display of advertising campaigns over the years. Guinness has always been quite creative when it comes to advertising their beer. From a whistling oyster to a bicycle-riding fish, there have been some very unique commercials out there.

Guinness is Good for You!

guinness storehouse tour ireland

What I loved hearing was that Guinness is actually good for you. Once upon a time, people drank a pint of Guinness after giving blood in Dublin to replenish their electrolytes. That is certainly one way to entice people to do a good deed. Did you know, Guinness is also considered a light beer? Even though it is dark in colour, it is light in taste. It has fewer calories than most beers and less sugar. So drink on people! Read more: 16 Fun Facts About Ireland To Prepare For Your Next Journey Abroad

The Guinness Harp

guinness harp

Did you know that the emblem of Ireland is a harp? When Guinness developed their label, they too used the harp but flipped it backward so that they could trademark it. When you visit the book of Kells at Trinity College you will see the real Irish harp on display.  The harp was greatly revered in history and often played at courts.

How to Pour a Pint of Guinness

deb beer

When visiting the Guinness Storehouse, you can either take the regular tour through the brewery or you can add a premium tasting experience. The Connoisseur Tour takes you to the Guinness Academy brings you into a private room where you learn how to pour a pint of Guinness.

  • You can book your Connoisseur Tour directly at the Guinness Storehouse Website.

You’ll master the art of the six-step process of pouring the perfect pint of Guinness that takes 119.5 seconds to perfect. The harp plays an important role in making the pour perfect.

  • When filling the pint, the bartender pulls the tap fully until the beer reaches the harp emblem on the Guinness pint.
  • Once it touches the top of the harp, they stop pouring and let it sit until the cascade has settled to a nice dark pint.
  • They then continue to pour the rest of the head.

Once you are finished you receive a diploma and a fresh pint of Guinness to enjoy on your own.

Gravity Bar at Guinness

guinness storehouse tour city

The Guinness Storehouse Tour doesn’t end like other brewery tours. This one takes you to the 7th-floor of the factory to the Gravity Bar. Enjoy the sunset in this chic bar as you sip on a complimentary pint of Guinness. It has some of the best views of Dublin. Once you are done, you make your way down the escalator to the exit where you can pick up your complimentary checked coats and bags before heading off to explore more of Dublin.

And there you have it, your Guinness Storehouse Tour is complete. Have you taken a tour of the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin? Did you enjoy it?

Thank’s for the great article. Everyone who visits this city should do the Guinness Storehouse Tour. My favorite exhibit is also the one with all the commercials and advertisement campaigns of Guinness over the years. Particularly the Bicycle riding fish, very appropriate considering that one of the best ways to get to know Dublin is by bicycle.

What is the Guinness Storehouse?

If you want to learn what exactly goes into a pint of the "black stuff" and the story of how this famous stout went from humble beginnings to being sold all around the world, then the Guinness Storehouse, the home of Guinness in St James’s Gate in Dublin and winner of the World’s Leading Tourist Attraction 2023, is the place to start

Guinness Storehouse_web-size_2500x1200px

St James's Gate, Dublin

The story of Guinness goes back more than 250 years, when Arthur Guinness, from Celbridge in County Kildare, decided to set up a brewery. In 1759, he signed a 9,000-year lease at a site at St James’s Gate in Dublin city centre . He built the Guinness brewery up slowly, and ten years later, started exporting barrels of stout by ship to England.

By 1868, St James’s Gate was like a mini city, with a cooperage, barley maltings and even its own railway and fire brigade. The company built its own barges to transport barrels of stout along Ireland’s waterways and hired scientists to perfect the stout.

When you arrive at the Guinness Storehouse and walk among the brewery buildings, the cobbled streets and tram tracks, and arrive at the famous black gates, the story starts to come to life. This is the largest stout brewery in the world and during a visit, you will take a journey through the life and story of this iconic beer.

Barley pit at the Guinness Storehouse

Barley pit at Guinness Storehouse

At the Guinness Storehouse visitor attraction, the self-guided tour starts with the basics of how Guinness is brewed. You will learn about the four ingredients that go into making the perfect beer – water, barley (which is mashed and roasted), hops and yeast – while you go along walkways of different levels, with waterfalls, hops growing behind glass and industrial pipes and fittings giving some of the sounds, aromas and atmosphere of a brewery.

Along the way, through audio-visual displays, you will learn about Arthur Guinness and his family , before visiting the roasting area to learn how the barley is milled, mashed, separated and roasted at 232°C for the perfect flavour, aroma and colour.

The storehouse building itself was built between 1902 and 1904 and was used as a fermentation house. During your visit you will see pipes, machinery and huge vats preserved from those times.

The fermentation area shows the final stage of the brewing process, when the yeast is added to the mix of barley, water and hops. A cooperage area tells the story of the skills of the barrelmakers.

Exhibit of past adverts of Guinness

Past Guinness adverts

In 1929 Guinness started producing its famous colourful ads and pub signs , with the slogans "Guinness is good for you" and "My Goodness, My Guinness", featuring zoo animals including sea lions, penguins and of course the famous toucan. This exhibition is one of the most popular areas for visitors.

Clever advertising helped spread the story around the world, and in 2009, when Guinness celebrated its 250th anniversary, 50 million people around the world raised a glass to toast Arthur’s Day.

Today, Guinness is the world’s best loved stout. It is brewed in 50 countries and sold in more than 120 countries. It is estimated that 10 million glasses of Guinness are enjoyed every day around the world.

People at the Gravity bar with pints of Guinness

Gravity Bar, Guinness Storehouse

There are three tour options to try at the Guinness Storehouse:

  • A basic self-guided Storehouse experience, which includes a drink at the Gravity Bar .
  • You can also add on a "Stoutie" option, a second pint with your selfie on the head, or visit the Guinness Academy , to learn how to pour the perfect pint.
  • A Connoisseur ticket gives you an exclusive tasting in the Connoisseur bar and a pint-pouring session.

Your visit will end at the top floor Gravity Bar, which has floor to ceiling windows with 360-degree views of Dublin city. The vista stretches as far south as the Dublin and Wicklow mountains, across Dublin Bay, and north to Howth peninsula, taking in landmarks such as St Patrick’s Cathedral and the iconic Poolbeg chimneys.

Before you raise your beer glass to sip your creamy pint of Guinness, you will see how it is poured and allowed to settle halfway through. Experts have worked out that the necessary time for this "perfect pour" is 119.53 seconds.

Allow at least 1.5 hours for a visit to the Storehouse – but you can stay longer as there is a lot to take in, and there are cafés and bars on different levels if you need a break, and a gift shop of all things Guinness on the first floor.

Glass of Roe & Co whiskey

Roe & Co whiskey distillery, Dublin city

The Guinness Storehouse is in the historic Liberties area of Dublin, which was once home to many of the city’s whiskey distilleries.

For things to do nearby, you might like to visit Jameson Distillery in Smithfield, or the Roe & Co or Pearse Lyons and Co , distilleries are both within walking distance. On the tours, you’ll learn about whiskey distilling and the area’s famous " Golden Triangle " of distilleries.

Within 20 minutes’ walk of the Storehouse, you will find two of Dublin's most historic buildings – St Patrick’s Cathedral , founded in 1191 and Christ Church Cathedral , which dates back to the year 1030.

Need to know

You're advised to book tickets in advance, but you can buy tickets when you arrive (expect queues at busy times).

Tours are self-guided and the Self-guided and Gravity Bar ticket includes a voucher for a pint of Guinness, another beer or a soft drink at Gravity Bar.

Children 18 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

The Guiness Storehouse is open seven days a week, from Sunday to Thursday, 10am to 7pm (last entry 5pm), and Friday and Saturday, 10am to 8pm (last entry 6pm).

To arrive by bus , take the 13, 40 or 123. The nearest Luas (tram) stop is St James’s Hospital.

There is free parking in the visitor’s car park on Crane Street, but spaces are limited.

The building is fully accessible and has lifts throughout.

If you’re visiting Dublin , you absolutely must stop by the Guinness Storehouse, which is one of the most-visited attractions in all of Ireland! Don’t let that statistic fool you; the Guinness Storehouse experience is really unlike any other brewery tour out there, and it’s one that will really stick with you!

Here are some quick facts about the Guinness Storehouse:

  • It’s made up of 7 floors!
  • You can get an official certificate showing that you know how to pour the perfect pint of Guinness from the Guinness Academy.
  • Get a free pint at the end of your tour! It’s included in your ticket.
  • At the end of the tour, you’re rewarded with panoramic views of Dublin in the Gravity Bar, which is the highest bar in Dublin.
  • The inside of the storehouse is shaped like a giant pint (the world’s biggest pint, to be exact); if it were to be filled, there would be 14 million pints in it!

Woohoo, you’re planning a trip to Dublin! Here are some of our top recommendations.

History of the Guinness Storehouse

sign that says guinness st. james's gate brewery dublin

Arthur Guinness, with a 100-pound inheritance from his godfather, signed a 9000-year lease in 1759 at St. James Gate Brewery. Yes, you heard me right – a 9000-year lease .

That lease is still going strong on the 4 acres of land! For a while up through the 19th century, this brewery was also the largest in the world.

historic lease under glass on the floor

Believe it or not, the Guinness family has also helped out Ireland a lot over the years. Firstly, the brewery gave many people in Dublin jobs (with good compensation!) and even provided more rights to its workers back when many places didn’t.

The family has also aided with the construction of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, helping with reconstruction often. Also, if you happen to stop by St. Stephen’s Green, you may realize that the family also helped with making it a prominent park in the city!

Buying Tickets to the Guinness Storehouse

The easiest way to purchase tickets is to go to the Guinness Storehouse website and purchase them ahead of time. You can purchase tickets for a time slot, and that’s when you’ll be granted entry.

For anyone over 18, tickets start at €19.50, for children 13 – 17, tickets are €16, and for children 6 – 12, tickets are €5. Any child under the age of 6 is free.

Notice how I said that tickets start at €19.50… that’s because ticket prices can change depending on how busy the time is that you choose. Keep that in mind when purchasing your tickets!

If you purchase your tickets ahead of time, it’s super easy to get into the storehouse. All you have to do is go and type in your information once you arrive and your tickets are printed. Then you can waltz right in and begin your self-guided tour!

How to Get to the Guinness Storehouse

The Guinness Storehouse is easily accessible by public transportation, which is how I got there.

Black sign that says Guinness Storehouse with a white arrow

The first option is to get to the Guinness Storehouse by using the LUAS, which is the Dublin tram system. To do this, take the red LUAS to James’s. From there, it’s a short 5-minute walk to get to the storehouse.

If you’d like to get there by bus, you can get off at O’Connell Street from any of the following buses: 40 towards Liffey Valley, 13 towards Grange Castle, or 123 towards Walkinstown. Make sure you have a leap card or you’ll have to have exact change on you to take the bus.

You can also easily get to the Guinness Storehouse by taking a taxi; the best way to get a taxi in Dublin is by using an app called Free Now. I used this app often in Dublin and it’s extremely reliable, though taxis can be costly in the city!

Other options include walking (very easy to do if you’re already downtown) or taking a car. There’s first-come-first-serve free parking near the storehouse on Crane Street.

The Ground Floor

The ground floor sets the stage for a lot of the tour. There’s an orientation to your self-guided tour every five minutes, and I highly suggest sticking around to hop into one of these orientations.

Since the tour is self-guided, it’s nice to at least start off by hearing from a Guinness expert! After you’re oriented, you’re free to go off on your merry way.

This is also the area where the Guinness merchandise store is. There are many things in the store but don’t worry, you can come back to the store after you’re done with your tour if you want. That way, you won’t have to carry your stuff around with you the whole time.

blue waterfall in the guinness storehouse

One thing that I suggest you consider purchasing is a customized Guinness pint glass to commemorate your stay. My friend and I did this and we love our glasses so much! They come in a pack of two, so if you split it with a friend you can snag a deal. Plus, each glass can say something different in the pack of two!

After you leave the orientation, you become a little more knowledgeable about Guinness as you’re told about the four main ingredients in the beer: water, barley, hops, and yeast. There are some pretty cool exhibits in this area. Trust me; you’ll want to take some photos!

The First Floor: History & Transportation

At this part of the tour, you learn all about the coopers who make the barrels that transport Guinness. You also find out that Guinness is being transported to over 150 countries worldwide! Everyone loves their Guinness.

There’s also a section where you can learn more about Arthur Guinness and the Guinness family, giving you some of the history mentioned earlier in the blog post. This floor also features the Cooperage Cafe, so if you’re hungry, you can already stop and grab a snack!

The Second Floor: Smell & Taste Guinness

Now, this is where the tour starts to get fun. You get to experience the awesome aroma room, where you can smell each of the four ingredients that go into Guinness. You may be shocked at how amazing these aromas actually smell! It really does something to your senses.

guinness pints in a tasting room

This is also the floor where you are officially taught how to drink Guinness in the Velvet Chamber. Yes, this means you get even more free Guinness on your tour, though it is a mini pint glass!

Be sure to listen to the tour guide when they go over how to taste Guinness; it actually does make a difference if you drink it the way that they tell you to!

The Third Floor: Guinness World of Advertising

Believe it or not, but this was actually my favorite floor of the entire tour! It’s where you get to explore the Guinness World of Advertising and see all of their awesome marketing over the years that they’re so well-known for.

clocks that say tick followed tock followed tick

Some of the awesome exhibits that you’ll definitely want to see include the fish riding a bicycle and the “tick followed tock” section. There’s even one exhibit you can partake in, making it look like you are on a Guinness poster! This is a great photo opportunity.

This floor also has a Guinness Advertising short film that I suggest watching. It’s a great break from the rest of the tour in my opinion!

Really take in everything on this floor; it’s one of the busiest floors of the entire tour.

The Fourth Floor: Guinness Academy

Now, this is one of the most fun floors because you get to pour your own glass of Guinness. This is, of course, not required, and it does use your free pint ticket.

However, there’s just something about pouring your own glass that makes you enjoy it even more! Plus, then you’ll have a cool party trick since you’ll know how to pour a glass of Guinness .

fish riding a bike sculpture

Though there may be a bit of a wait since there’s a line, I’m here to tell you that it is 100% worth it.

Once it’s your turn, you’ll be in a group with a guide who will teach you all about holding your glass at 45 degrees and filling the pint to the harp on the pint glass. You’ll also learn that it takes 119 seconds to pour the perfect pint!

Another stop on this floor is the Connoisseur Experience, which I didn’t partake in. You can book a stop here for an extra fee and experience a tasting of the different kinds of Guinness with a staff member! When I return to Dublin, I’m doing this part of the tour.

The Fifth Floor: Food

This is the floor where the Guinness restaurants are! The first option is Brewer’s Dining Hall, which has a lot of Guinness-inspired dishes and other foods that are traditional to Ireland. This is a more laid-back option with an open kitchen.

sign that says everyone's irish on march 17th

The next option is the 1837 Bar & Brasserie, which has both small dishes and bigger entree options. There are also platters that you could get to split between yourself and some buddies.

Lastly, Arthur’s Bar is also on this floor. This is your traditional Irish pub with small snacks to go with Guinness. Sometimes there’s even live Irish music in the bar, which only adds to the awesome atmosphere!

If you don’t want anything to eat on this floor, don’t worry. There are a lot of other great places to eat in Dublin !

7th Floor: Gravity Bar

two empty pint glasses on a table

Okay, I know I said the Guinness World of Advertising floor was the best floor, but… I lied. This is the best floor. Grab the pint that you poured and head straight up here if you aren’t going to any of the restaurants.

I highly suggest taking the elevator, so you don’t spill it. I saw so many people accidentally do that!

view of dublin from the guinness storehouse above.

This is where you get amazing views of Dublin. It is the city’s best view and the highest point in the city too. You can even see the Wicklow Mountains from here, which is where the water used for Guinness is taken from; not the River Liffey, as many assume!

It can be very busy up here, so if you see an open seat, grab it quickly! The earlier in the day that you book your ticket, the less of a chance you have of it being busy. My tour was at 4:30 p.m., and it was so busy up here, but I didn’t mind! It only added to the fun.

Check out my vlog from when I visited the Guinness Storehouse below!

Love Ireland! And the Guinness Storehouse is a must-do! A good glass of Guinnes, the views, and the entire atmosphere…

I totally agree! 🙂

This looks like such a great time! Alas, I’m stuck drinking Guinness at home (it could be worse!) for now, but would love to see this when the world opens up again!

It’s totally worth visiting one day! 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!

What a great guide! When I visited Dublin I didn’t go to the Storehouse as I don’t drink Guinness, but it looks like a fascinating place! I might have to include a visit on my next trip to Dublin!

I think it’s great even if you aren’t a Guinness fan! I hadn’t ever tried it before until I did the tour.

Pinned for future travels! I just cancelled our May trip to Dublin. So sad. That will be the first place we travel when international flights open up. Dublin and Guinness are calling me!

I hope you get there eventually! It really is such an amazing city. I studied abroad there last spring and fell in love with the city & the country! Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

I love your photos in this post! I love all sorts of beer, but never managed to appreciate Guinness, despite it looking very appetising. Would be interested in visiting the brewery though, I’ve never been to Dublin but it’s definitely on my travel wish list 🙂

Thanks so much! Honestly, even if you’re not a fan of Guinness, it’s so worth doing the tour. It’s such an interactive experience!

I don’t like beer, but whenever there are breweries to visit, I am always the first in line! I visited the Alexander Keith brewery in Nova Scotia back in the days, I found the visit so interesting!

It’s totally a great place to visit even if you aren’t a beer fan! I hope you get to visit there one day. 🙂

I’ll keep the Guinness Storehouse in mind as a must see when visiting Ireland. Your visit sounds fun, and there’s so many interesting facts. I can’t get over the 9,000 year lease, that’s insane!

The lease is pretty cool; you can see it during the tour!

This is such a detailed guide! It’s great. I did this years ago. I must admit I poured a really horrible Guinness.

Thank you, I’m glad you liked the post! I’m not sure my Guinness pour was the best either, but hey, still got the certificate!

I didn’t get a chance to go here when I was in Dublin but this great guide makes me want to go back for it.

You should; it’s such a great experience!

This is an awesome guide! I went to the Guinness Storehouse when I visited Ireland in October 2017 and LOVED it! Gravity Bar was so fun and it was so cool learning about Guinness in general. 🙂

I’m so glad you liked it! The Gravity Bar was so cool; I loved seeing Dublin from above!

With any luck due to the pandemic, I’ll be able to visit Ireland next year for my 30th birthday. Reading this post made me SO excited to go! I can’t wait to visit the Guinness Storehouse! I felt like I was there with your photos and writing, it got me in the mood to start planning! Can’t wait to share with my friends!

Hoping you get there next year! Ireland really is such an amazing country. 🙂

Guinness Storehouse looks like such a cool place! I can definitely see why it brings visitors from all over the world.

I agree. Thanks for stopping by!

Wow, I didn’t know the storehouse was 7 floors tall – that’s huge! I guess the world really likes its Guinness 😉

Yeah, it’s crazy huge! Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

I did the Guiness Storehouse tour, but I want to do the more in depth one next time! My favorite part was having Guiness at the top. I want to learn how to pur it!

You definitely should! It’s really fun learning how to pour your own pint.

Such a great one! Since my colleagues went a year ago for a weekend getaway over to Dublin I was planning my trip. Last notes are done now! Really great article!

Thanks so much! Glad it was helpful. 🙂

What a fun and awesome post! I’ve been wanting to visit Ireland for awhile and would definitely want to take this tour. 7 floors is really big but it looks like there is a ton to see. I love how they got a 9,000 year lease. Lol. It seems funny they would pick that many years but it looks like they will use it!

Surprisingly the tour goes by pretty fast! I thought 9,000 years was quite random too. Thanks for stopping by!

I have always wanted to visit the Guinness plant! It looks so much fun! I’m not a huge fan of beer, but it’s such an iconic place!

It’s honestly a great experience even if you aren’t a big beer fan! Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

I’ve been to Dublin many times, but still ahven’t made it to the Guiness Storehouse. Will definitely add it to my bucket list for next time. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you! I hope you make it to the Guinness Storehouse sometime. 🙂

I’m not a beer drinker, but it is interesting how passionate people are about their beers, and Guinness seems to have really inspired a lot of brand loyalty!

I agree! It really is a fun experience regardless if you like to drink beer though because everything is so interactive! Thank you for stopping by. 🙂

Hmm, years ago, Guinness was my favorite beer. I don’t drink it that often these days but I definitely still like it and would definitely visit when I visit Dublin!

That’s great to hear! I hope you get to the Storehouse one day. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!

I would love to visit Ireland, and of course a visit to the Guinness Stonehouse is a staple in that itinerary. Such beautiful views from the top! Thanks for sharing.

This is so awesome! I went to the Guinness Storehouse when I was in Ireland. Such a fun experience! I also go the certificate too and have it hanging in my office. 🙂

I loved the Guinness factory! Was there years ago with my mom. Now I’m obsessed with finding a Guinness as good outside of Ireland. ?

I swear it’s so much better in Ireland too! It’s probably because it’s fresher and didn’t have to be transported anywhere. Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

Ahh I loved the storehouse!! So fun pulling your own pint. This is a great post and really informative

I’m glad you loved the storehouse as much as me! Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

OMG, Guiness is one of my favourite beers! This has been added on to my bucket list hehe! Thanks for your insight and the useful tips so that we know what to expect-I am having an itchy foot now!

It’s one of my favorites too! Funnily enough, I hadn’t even tried it until I studied abroad in Dublin & then I loved it. I hope you get to the storehouse sometime!

Cant believe I missed out on this place, then again I thought I was going to move to Ireland and then Brexit happend and all plans were put on hold. These pictures however do make me want to book another trip to Ireland after Covid.

I also would love to move to Ireland – I was planning on going on a Working Holiday Visa later this year but I’m not sure if/how that’ll work out with Covid. :/ Hopefully we both get there sometime!

7 floors of Guinness goodness?! Sign me up!! Love this super helpful and informative guide! Thanks for sharing!!

It’s such a great experience! Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

When I go to Dublin, which hopefully will be soon, you can bet I’ll be going here. Although I might need to hurry if there’s only 8750 years left on that lease!

This New Guinness Storehouse Tour Takes Beer Lovers Behind the Scenes Like Never Before

guinness brewery tours dublin ireland

Sipping a perfectly poured pint of Guinness is one of the best beer experiences money can buy. But how does Guinness make their beer so special?

Now you can find out for yourself. The Guinness Storehouse in Dublin, Ireland , has officially opened a public brewery tour for people who want to know what goes on “beyond the gates.”

While Guinness has offered tours before, none have been as comprehensive as this new tour, which takes guests through some of the parts of the St. James Gate Brewery that have never been open to the public.

The three-hour tour takes guests through the actual brewery, getting a first-hand look at Guinness’s brewing process and history from 1759 to the present day. The tour includes passing through the Guinness Roast House, 200-year-old Vat Houses (where the “maturing” process happens), the brand’s experimental Open Gate Brewery, and even the famous underground tunnel that leads to Brewhouse 4, according to the Guinness Storehouse website.

“It’s an amazing site – a 50+ acre brewery right in the heart of Dublin city, full of so much history and great stories, and of course home to the world’s best pint as well,” Padraig Fox, general manager at Open Gate Brewery in Dublin, told USA Today.

At the end of the tour, guests are treated to a beer and food tasting at Arthur’s Bar, the public bar attached to the storehouse, where people can get the perfect pint. Guests will also leave with a Guinness-branded item as a souvenir.

“It’s a real treat for Guinness fans, stepping into the history of the brewery from Arthur’s time, but also seeing one of the most modern brewhouses in the world," Fox told USA Today .

Tickets for the tour are €95 (about $105 USD) per person and the tour is currently only available in English. For more information or to book your tour, visit the Guinness Storehouse website .

The Guinness Storehouse tour starts at the famous gates

Sat in a cozy local pub, the incessant buzz of Irish-accented voices swirling around you, traditional music flows from a live band in the corner. In front of you is a pint of Guinness, looking like the absolute meal in a glass it is. The perfect line of white foam contrasting the almost black liquid underneath as you’ve waited patiently for it to settle. This is the simplest, yet possibly most enjoyable way to experience Ireland . But first, let’s take it back to where the nation’s favorite beer started – with a Guinness Storehouse tour in Dublin. It’s almost a crime to skip this national treasure location, even if you don’t like beer.

Where is the Guinness Storehouse

Since the company began in 1759, the Guinness Brewery has stood at St. James’s Gate in Dublin, Ireland. The huge wooden gates bearing the familiar harp symbol on one of the world’s most famous brews is unmistakable. While the actual storehouse building is a lot newer, this part of the city has an unbelievable amount of history with beer.

Book any city bus tour and you can all but guarantee that one of the stops will be at the world famous gate. Which makes it really easy to make a Guinness Storehouse tour part of your day . In fact, on of my favorite European travel tips is to take advantage of these city bus tours.

From Dublin’s busy and popular Temple Bar area, it’s about a 25-minute walk to the Guinness Storehouse. Or you can take a taxi if you want to save your legs. I chose to walk on my visit as it was a lovely day out – and I got to see a lot more places along the way.

How to get Guinness Storehouse tour tickets

pint of Guinness in Dublin

As one of the most popular experiences in Dublin, an already busy and popular city, you’ll want to book ahead to avoid disappointment. I booked my Guinness Storehouse tour a week before I visited.

When you book, either directly through the Guinness Storehouse website, or a ticket seller such as GetYourGuide , you’ll have to select a time slot. So while you might still see availability closer to the date, getting time you want may not always be possible. Earlier in the day is likely to have better availability.

If your time in Dublin is limited, and in any way around a weekend, plan ahead as best you can .

Pricing starts at around €26 but can be more for busier times like afternoon or weekends. Expect to see some variance on pricing depending on when you choose.

TOP TRAVEL TIP: The Guinness Storehouse is fully accessible with escalators and elevators throughout. That means anyone with mobility concerns or in a wheelchair won’t miss out on any of this magical experience.

How long will you spend?

The Guinness Storehouse tour took a lot longer than I expected. I honestly thought I would be in there an hour, see a bit of the brewing process, maybe a couple of museum-like exhibits and then top it off with a quick pint. I was wrong.

Yes, all the above is part of the experience, but you will get so immersed in it all that you’ll spend way longer than planned. From understanding all the stages of making Guinness, to learning the history of those who made it what it is today. Then of course there are tastings. And between all that is floor after floor of exhibits and artifacts from Guinness-making past.

The Guinness Storehouse tour will take you up through 7 floors in total. And the last one is the Gravity Bar with its incredible views out over Dublin. If there’s the perfect place to have a pint in Dublin, this is it .

All in all I would suggest allowing yourself around 2 hours to visit the Guinness Storehouse. You can likely do it in 90-minutes if you’re powering through, but you won’t be savoring that pint, and you won’t be allowing yourself time in the gargantuan gift shop.

What if I don’t like beer?

Entrance to the Guinness Storehouse tour

It’s not beer, it’s a meal in a glass. The lifeblood of Ireland. If you’re ever going to try Guinness, this is the place to do it.

I didn’t think I liked Guinness, having taken the odd sip over the years and deciding it wasn’t for me. But I did say that if I ever get a pint of Guinness I’m going to wait until I’m in Ireland. That’s exactly what I did, and I was pleasantly surprised .

Even if you don’t like beer, or stout, or whatever you want to call it, this place is iconic. We all know the advertisements with the toucan and all other fun commercials they have had over the years. The part of the Guinness Storehouse tour detailing the advertising was one of my favorite areas to explore.

The Guinness Storehouse is a history lesson, museum and factory all in one. Children are welcome here – although they won’t get a pint of Guinness at the end. So it’s not just about adults drinking beer, it’s a great place to learn more about Dublin and Ireland too.

The Guinness Storehouse tour

Guinness Storehouse tour entrance

I’ve taken part in brewery tours before. They’re usually a quick run through of the behind the scenes, and last maybe 20 minutes to half an hour. They typically end in the tasting room with a sample or two of whatever you’ve seen being made. The Guinness Storehouse tour blew any of these previous tours out of the water.

The entrance to the Guinness Storehouse tour is an Instagrammer’s dream with a replica St James’s Gate set up and decorated for you to take your photo in front of .

Proceeding to the exhibit, the first words you see are written on the black and white tiled floor. They state that “The essence of Guinness is all around you”.

WHAT IS GUINNESS MADE FROM?

Irish beer facts

There are four ingredients in Guinness: Water, barley, hops and yeast. The first floor of the Storehouse tour takes you through what each one of them does in the beer making process.

The four ingredients are displayed in a way that makes you feel like you’re really in the beer-making process, not just reading about it . Grab a handful of barley, smell the hops, run your hands through the cascading water.

DID YOU KNOW? They have a supply of the irreplaceable yeast locked in a safe here at the Guinness Storehouse?

THE GUINNESS FAMILY

You will be introduced to the history of the Guinness Family, dating back to the O.G. Arthur Guinness. Could this really be the most loved man in Irish history?

In an interesting part of the museum, find out how the brewing of this now famous beer began. And what led up to the signing of a 9000-year lease for the brewery. Now that’s a commitment.

BREWING GUINNESS ALL DAY EVERY DAY

Guinness brewing process

The magic of Guinness might start with four simple ingredients, but it is brought together with the brewing process. This part of the Guinness Storehouse tour focuses on the incredible 11-steps it takes to get these ingredients to your pint glass .

Find out the magical barley roasting temperature it takes to achieve the perfect Guinness flavor. Learn why nitrogen does to Guinness and why it’s used. And see some the equipment used to make your new favorite beer.

DID YOU KNOW? Every day at 10am there’s a tasting team to check the quality of the Guinness that’s been brewing. What a job!

IS ALCOHOL GOOD OR BAD?

test your alcohol knowledge on the Guinness Storehouse tour

One of the most interactive parts of the tour – other than the tasting – is the 10-question quiz about alcohol . Now I love a trivia game as much as the next person so I took on the challenge.

I won’t spoil the quiz, but through a series of True/False and multiple choice questions it turns out I still have a lot to learn. I got a really terrible score of 4 out of 10.

The questions will teach you about alcohol consumption, how long it takes your liver to process alcohol and tackles common understandings of alcohol effects and whether they’re right.

THE GUINNESS STOREHOUSE BUILDING

Inside the Guinness Storehouse

Throughout the Guinness Storehouse tour you’ll slowly make your way up higher and higher through the multi-level brewery. Despite how this could come off very factory-like, it is actually a beautiful and bright space.

Windowed-ceilings, colorful glass with mirrored panels to reflect is, as well as refurbished steel beam and brick interiors make for a fascinating journey through the Storehouse .

The use of everyday brewery-related items such as beer casks and machinery in the decoration is impressively unique.

THE TASTE EXPERIENCE

sampling the Black Stuff in Ireland

All this talk of beer made you ready for a pint of Guinness? Hold on, we’ll get there. First things first, you’ll get an official explanation of what you’re tasting and how you should taste it .

The group will be ushered into a special room dotted with giant white vats which ooze beer scented plumes of smoke. These are the esters of beer, the flavors. Take a whiff and wait for the staff to serve up a couple dozen mini Guinness glasses.

Grab your shot-o-Guinness, and (without sampling too soon) head over to the tasting room. Here, while waiting for your Guinness to settle, the chief taste specialist will recommend the best way to sample your beer.

THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF ADVERTISING

Guinness advertising

Unless you’ve been under a rock for decades you’ve likely seen the distinctive advertising of Guinness. Who doesn’t love the colorful toucan, or the any of the other kooky animals from the Guinness menagerie?

The advertising part of the Guinness Storehouse tour is one of my favorite exhibits. Iconic slogans and posters are on display with statuesque replicas of the most inventive animal creations .

You can end it by watching a video of some of the commercials. In a nod to the fact you have to let a Guinness settle before it achieves the perfect white head on black beer, you might remember the “Good things come to those who wait” commercial of the late-90s.

TAKE A BREAK MID-TOUR

Arthur's Bar, Dublin

Not sure if you can make it through all the levels without a pint of beer and some sustenance? Or maybe extend your visit after checking out the Gravity Bar. The Guinness Storehouse has more than one place to relax.

Arthur’s Bar serves food, and of course Guinness. While the Gravity Bar is an experience, Arthur’s is a lot less busy of a place to hang out for a while . Take in the views of Dublin while you sit back and relax.

GUINNESS AND A VIEW

Enjoying a frosty beer at the Guinness Storehouse tour

You’ve made it through the Guinness Storehouse tour, up through all the floors, and you are now likely an expert on brewing. Time to put the hard work aside and reap the reward.

Your Guinness Storehouse tour ticket includes a pint of Guinness at the Gravity Bar. Hand in your voucher, wait patiently for the pour and enjoy the view while you drink .

There is seating, but the later in the day you go here, the busier it gets. That means seating can be limited. Hover long enough and you might be lucky, or use some Dutch courage to go make new friends.

Failing that, there are plenty of places to stand and savor your pint while gazing out over the beautiful city of Dublin. Spot some landmarks or hang by the bar to watch mesmerizing pour after mesmerizing pour of the Black Stuff.

SHOP ‘TIL YOU DROP

Ireland souvenirs

As if you’re leaving this fine drinking establishment without a souvenir or two. Preferably a decorative toucan pint glass, a beer or two, or any number of items displaying slogans, logos or advertising campaigns past.

The marketing ploy of filling your patrons with alcohol then making them walk past the gift shop on the way out is genius at its finest . I succumbed and I’m not even ashamed.

Is the Guinness Storehouse tour worth the price?

Lovely Day for a Guinness

It’s expensive but it is an immersive experience. You’ll get to try a pint and some samplers which is worth about 15 EUR in itself. It’s a part of history in Ireland, and has one of the coolest bars in the city.

I had never had Guinness before my visit, and I’ll admit, I’m now a fan. I’m really glad my first ever pint of Guinness was in one of the best bars in Ireland, atop the legendary brewery where it was made. That made it even more special .

If it’s your first time in Dublin, the Guinness Storehouse tour really is a must-do experience. Whether you like beer or not, you can’t ignore the power of this famous Irish brand. This really is an interesting place and feels more like a museum. Of course, I wish all museums came with a pint of beer.

I enjoyed my visit with you to the Guinness storehouse. I was fascinated by the exhibits and I did the same as you — experienced my first Guinness there and became a fan. I’ve learned it really does taste better poured by a master.

I really enjoyed how you included some fun facts about the process.

It is true what they say about Guinness – that it tastes best in Dublin. I tried it in England and was not a big fan but when I tasted it in Ireland it was completely different, much creamier and fuller flavour. I was at the Dublin brewery many years ago and was enchanted at the displays (loved all the advertisement board through the years). It was a great experience, as your article portrays and the view from the rooftop Gravity bar was one of the best views in Dublin. We stayed and had a few more beers, so the free sample one certainly pays off!

A lovely post that brought back memories of our trip to Dublin which – of course – included the Guinness Storehouse. We really enjoyed our visit and thought the museum was well laid out and nicely designed. We particularly enjoyed the advertising display – so many iconic ads! And yes, the Gravity Bar at the top was an essential place to enjoy a tipple. How nice that you enjoyed your first Guinness there and that you’re now a fan! Lots of good advice about visiting and what to expect.

Having a Guinness (and lots of it) is probably one of the most interesting ways in knowing Dublin and its people. As I haven’t been to the city, I think this is where I would likely to start 😉 This is truly a cultural touchstone carrying the very Irish emblem that is known worldwide. The Gravity bar is perfect to finish the tour and savor the tipple. Your tour reminded me of the sherry visit I did in Jerez that made me slightly tipsy at the end 😉 #flyingbaguette

You describe a pint very well. That is coming from an Irishman 😁 I know where the Storehouse is located and your post does a great job describing it. Very helpful. 2 hours is easily enough time to appreciate the experience and enjoy the view of the city from above. I miss home now lol

I actually found the Guiness Storehouse fascinating. Once you get past the tourist stuff, the history of the beer and how it is such an integrated part of Ireland (and Dublin) history. I love your observation of filling with alcohol then letting them shop haha. Fun fact, the bbq sauce counts as a liquid and security will take it. (insert sad face here).

Oh no!! More reason to go back – and pack it in your suitcase this time

Whilst this is an experience I would probably skip when in Ireland, I appreciate your comprehensive guide to this tour and sharing with us your impressions and insights. Guinness and Ireland are synonymous, like Amsterdam is with Heineken, so I understand that the storehouse tour is high on many visitor’s lists. I like that the experience allows you to fully immerse yourself with the brand and is not just a quick in-and-out.

Carolin | Solo Travel Story

Very interesting, who knew there was so much to know about a beer 🙂 I loved the advertising part, it’s always fun to see how products evolve in their offer to the public. I have Ireland high on my list of places to visit soon and this experience will certainly not be missed on a trip to Dublin.

Exploring Ireland: Day trips worth taking from Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway

Whatever you think of the name, the concept of “daycations” is pretty straightforward: take a day to explore the region around where you live and then return to sleep in your own bed at night. It’s the chance to break up a regular routine, plus it’s a great way of engaging in a little tourism without spending a fortune on accommodation, usually the heftiest expense of any holiday.

And in Ireland, where tourist accommodation is squeezed by seasonality and availability – in the last couple of years, up to a third of all hotel beds have been tied up in public contracts – that can mean significant savings.

The idea is simple: be a tourist in your own area. Take a visit to a nearby attraction, or maybe explore some ruins. Go for a hike in the mountains, or kayak on a nearby lake. Everyone’s version of the ideal day out is different and can change depending on the season and the weather.

Here are some ideas on where to explore from the base of a number of Ireland’s largest populated areas – Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway.

Have you ever visited Marsh’s Library in Dublin?

Of course, you could devote plenty of days to exploring without leaving the city centre: when was the last time you went to the Natural History Museum, for example? Have you ever visited Marsh’s Library or the Casino at Marino? And while we all know it’s there, have you ever actually been to the Guinness Storehouse? But there’s a lot to explore within a couple of hours’ drive of O’Connell Street – including some genuine surprises.

Brú na Bóinne, just west of Drogheda, is one of the most known neolithic sites in the world, a Unesco world Heritage attraction that draws hundreds of thousands of yearly visitors. If you have never been, you should go.

But if you like your neolithic sites without the crowds, there’s the cairns at Loughcrew , 50km to the west, near Oldcastle along the R154. Of the 32 tombs here, Cairn T is the most accessible, a 15-minute walk up the hill from the car park. Although it mightn’t seem as impressive as Newgrange, the passageway is illuminated during the spring and autumn equinoxes, and the passageway is visible when Heritage Ireland guides are present; otherwise, the key to the gate is available from the cafe at Loughcrew Gardens.

Glendalough is one of the country’s most significant and beautifully located monastic sites, but it does get busy. A far less visited alternative is the Fore Valley in Co Westmeath, about 5km east of Castlepollard near the shores of Lough Lene. There’s nary a visitor here, but the setting for the ruins of St Féchín’s 7th century monastic village is stunning: a cluster of ruins huddled at the base of a beautiful valley, that is looped by a 3km walking trail. If you do visit, be sure to pick up a guide map at the Fore Abbey Coffee Shop, which will also explain the “seven wonders” of the valley – the monastery in the bog, the water that flows uphill, the tree that won’t burn, the water that won’t boil, the anchorite in a stone, the mill without a race, and the lintel raised by the prayers of St Fechin. And even if you don’t believe, it’s a beautiful place to linger.

The particularly arresting artwork in Spike Island by inmates is on display upstairs in the punishment block

Corkonians are spoilt for choice when it comes to things to do beyond the city limits. The train ride to Fota Island, for instance, is one of the most scenic in the country, as you chug past marshy Harper’s Island and over the bridges on Lough Mahon and the Slatty Water.

Fota has plenty to keep you entertained for the day with the wildlife park and, just by the tiger enclosure, Fota House , which can be visited by guided tour. Even if you don’t step inside, take time to walk around the gorgeous arboretum.

While it may lack the high-tech razzmatazz of its sister museum in Belfast, the visit to the old White Star Line building is a stirring one

Although most Corkonians are well familiar with Cobh, how many have set foot inside the excellent Titanic Experience ? While it may lack the high-tech razzmatazz of its sister museum in Belfast, the visit to the old White Star Line building (the last port of call before setting out into the North Atlantic) is a stirring one: when you enter you’re given a ticket with a real passenger’s name on it; you then go through the exhibits and find out at the end if they survived or not. Further along the seafront is the dock for Spike Island , whose 1300-year history is told in compelling detail; particularly arresting is the artwork by inmates upstairs in the punishment block.

Cork has no shortage of terrific hikes, including the wonderful cliff walk that starts at Knockadoon Pier, 45km east of the city on a headland looking out over Capel Island. The 7km-long looped cliff walk is stunning, taking you along the coastline past the old signal tower (which dates from 1803) and back to the pier, which is a popular spot for a swim. About 500 metres offshore, Capel Island is an uninhabited bird sanctuary; you’d need permission from Birdwatch Ireland to visit.

King John’s Castle has stood on the banks of the Shannon for 800 years, but when was the last time you went inside? Photograph: Eye Ubiquitous/Universal Images Group via Getty Images

There’s a lot to see in Limerick these days, from the relatively new to the very old. The wonderful International Rugby Experience opened in 2023 and tells the story of the sport as well as providing a chance to test your kicking skills. King John’s Castle has stood on the banks of the Shannon for 800 years, but when was the last time you went inside? If it’s been a while, you might enjoy the primer on Irish history (there’s a lot of gore) and the chance to try some medieval games in the courtyard, like a proper game of hopscotch.

What about experiencing Limerick from the water? Nev Sail has kayaking tours that start just behind the Hunt Museum and take you up and down the river, under the bridges and up close to the sturdy walls of the castle.

If you’re looking for more watery adventures outside the city, head north to Killaloe, where Aoife O’Mara’s My Next Adventure has a range of kayaking tours: the Brian Ború Experience is a two-hour trip through 1000 years of history (and 13 of Killaloe’s stone bridges) as far up as Lough Derg. The Full Moon Kayaking takes you right out into the middle of Lough Derg at sunset before returning to Killaloe.

For an even more active day out, the Ballyhoura Mountain Bike Trails are, at 98km, the largest of its kind in Ireland, weaving in and out of thick forest and gorgeous mountain views – and they’re only a 45km drive south of the city, just beyond Kilmallock. There are five loops of varying length and difficulty, from gentle, family-friendly slopes to rugged speed tracks designed to challenge the most intrepid riders (you might even catch world champion rider and local lad Oisin O’Callaghan going for a spin). If you don’t have a bike, you can rent everything – including helmets and protective pads – from the Ballyhoura Mountain Bike Centre at the base of the mountain. If you prefer to do your wandering on two feet, the waymarked Ballyhoura Way wends its way through 90km of forest trail, field paths, moorland and tarmac road.

Outside of Galway city, a journey around Lough Corrib is a fantastic day trip option

With Connemara, the Aran Islands and the Burren on its doorstep, Galwegians have no shortage of day trip options from the City of the Tribes. But even within the city there are some interesting ways to discover, not least with a tour that takes full advantage of Galway’s reputation as a capital of fine food.

Galway Food Tours is a local outfit that operates a range of food tours where you get to sample lots of different local produce, from sushi to chocolate. Day tours start outside McCambridge’s on Shop Street include six food and drink stops and you finish in the Soul Garden at the back of Massimo’s in the West End (where you bid farewell with a goody bag). They also offer whiskey and craft beer tours as well as a food and cycling tour that uses e-bikes.

Outside of the city, a journey around Lough Corrib is a fantastic day trip option. Just before you get to Oughterard, Aughnanure Castle was once home to the “fighting O’Flaherty’s”; these days the six-storey tower house on a rocky outcrop overlooking the lake is open to visitors. If you fancy getting out on to the lake, Corrib Cruises has twice-weekly summer sailings from Oughterard that take you out to explore the monastic ruins of Inchagoill, the largest island on the lake.

Just beyond Oughterard is the Quiet Man bridge, the idea of which has raised collective eyebrows since the 1950s film starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara became part of the Irish-American cultural lexicon, but there’s no denying that it’s an absolutely gorgeous spot. In Cong, there’s the Quiet Man Museum (strictly for the hard-core fans) but far more interesting is the 3km forest loop walk that brings you to Leonard’s Tower, aka the Guinness Tower, on the grounds of Ashford Castle. Climb the 85 steps to the top for views and a decent leg workout. One final stop, on the eastern side of the lake, are at the ruins of Ross Errilly Friary, just beyond Glencorrib, the most complete Franciscan monastic ruins in the country. From here, it’s 27km back to Galway City along the N84.

See The Book Of Kells At The Trinity College Library

The Library of Trinity College in Dublin is one of the oldest libraries in Ireland and nothing will make time fly by quicker than the dark aisles of its 16th-century reading halls. The library has over 7,000,000 volumes of books on its shelves but if there's one thing that visitors must see, it's the Book of Kells -- the four Latin Gospel manuscripts dating back to the 9th century. No matter the time of the year, the library always has at least one volume on display for the public to see.

Catch A Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour

Flights can get pretty darn tiring. Oftentimes, there's very little energy left for anything exciting on a layover, let alone exploring an entirely new city . In that case, hop-on hop-off bus tours offer visitors an excellent means through which to see Dublin without much physical exertion on their part. Simply catch an open-top double-decker bus, grab a seat in a corner, and watch Dublin's top attractions pass by as you listen to audio guides for context.

Get A Taste Of Irish Food

What better way to spend a layover in Dublin than to eat your way through the Irish capital? Food blogger Ketty Quigley's Delicious Dublin Tours take visitors on a three-hour walking trip around the city with stops at plenty of famous eateries in between. As local experts tell tales of Dublin's food history, visitors will not only taste the best of local Irish food, but they will also learn of its past and present. These tours operate regardless of the weather in the notoriously temperamental capital.

Hop Onto A Viking Splash Tour

Long layovers in Dublin are one thing if you're alone or in the company of a fellow adult, but finding entertainment can be a far more tedious task when traveling with kids. A Viking Splash Tour is an excellent adrenaline-filled activity -- and an incredibly unique one at that -- for both adults and kids to take part in when in Dublin. The tours take place on a restored World War II amphibious vehicle that functions much like a bus on the roads but transforms into a boat as it mightily glides into the Grand Canal Dock, splashing passengers on board with the cold waters of the canal.
