National Walleye Tour: Pro-Angler Zemke & Co-Angler Kenny are Champions at Lake Winnebago

  • May 19, 2023
  • By Toby Lapinski

OSHKOSH, WI – After two days of competition on Lake Winnebago in Oshkosh, Wisconsin at the second tournament of the 2023  Bass Pro Shops  &  Cabela’s  National Walleye Tour presented by  Progressive , Pro-Angler Todd Zemke from Red Wing, Minnesota and Co-Angler Alexander Kenny from Mequon, Wisconsin are the Champions!

Todd left the dock on Thursday morning with over a 2-pound lead and despite a tougher second day, the Minnesota angler came in early with enough to walk away with the win – collecting $15,000 cash and a new  2023 Triton Fishhunter 206  with a 225 Mercury Pro XS motor as well as winning  a Mercury Contingency Bonus of $1,000. In all, Todd captured $88,435 in cash and prizes.

“There were several different factors that contributed to my success,” said the  Mercury Marine  pro. “I was able to locate fish shallow and the sun showing itself both days really helped my fish react. I never went further than seven feet of water in the upper lake and main lake, those were my primary areas.” Todd reported that he caught his fish primarily on spinners on  boards  in three feet of water using two-hook harness crawlers. “I kept the boat at 1-2 mph and staying around the weeds seemed to be the ticket to the fish that wanted to react.” Todd’s winning weight was 31 pounds and 10 ounces.

Huynh Holds On To Second Place – 31.03

Wolverton, Minnesota Pro Tom Huynh was able to end his tournament capturing the second place spot winning $24,122, including the $500  Garmin  Contingency bonus.

“I ended up fishing jigs super shallow up the river after I stumbled onto a pattern the last day of practice. I didn’t catch many fish but the fish I did get into the boat were the right quality,” said the  AFTCO  pro angler. “A key bait for me this week was a prototype  Northland Tackle  plastic that will be released next year.” Tom said the special part of this prototype plastic is it allows the angler to apply their own scent and the plastic soaks up the scent lasting longer throughout the day of fishing. “My  Garmin  electronics were key this week to find reactive fish and help the fish stay interested until they ended up biting. Also, with the wind today and cooler weather, my  AFTCO  gear kept me comfortable throughout the tournament.”

Third Place Belongs to Local Pro Curtis Tripke

Curtis Tripke from Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin ended the tournament taking home third place while notching his first Top-10 finish with the National Walleye Tour. After two tournament days, Curtis’s total weight was 26.11. For his week of fishing, Curtis earned $16,034.

“I am so thankful for the week I had, especially not getting to pre-fish. But being local and fishing this lake all the time really helped me throughout the tournament,” said Tripke. “Yesterday I didn’t have my first keeper until after lunch. Both days I had to run multiple spots before finding the fish I needed. I stayed shallow, away from the crowd, and just stayed confident throughout the tournament making sure I kept the fish I needed.” The Wisconsin Pro also commented that jigs were his keys to success this week on Lake Winnebago and similar lures to imitate a trout-perch, the main forage in Lake Winnebago.

Kenny Takes the Co-Angler Crown

Mequon, WI Co-Angler Alexander Kenny takes home the title after weighing in 28.02 pounds  over the two days and a check worth $7,500. “Day 1, my Pro-Angler and I were live baiting and jumping around spots,” said Kenny. “Both days were exceptionally tough, the weather wasn’t ideal I don’t think for us. But today my Pro and I grinded out on one group of fish and were fortunate to catch the right five keepers.” Alexander wanted to especially thank his Pro-Anglers both days, his family, traveling partners, and his sponsor Fish Boys Custom Rods.

Walleye Tour Championship takes to waters Wednesday

national walleye tour co angler

Dunkirk Mayor Wilfred Rosas and National Walleye Tournament Director Anthony Wright are pictured.

After four qualifying events that spanned the Midwest, the top 40 pros and top 40 co-anglers are set to compete in the 2022 National Walleye Tour Championship, presented by Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s. The no-entry-fee tournament takes place from Wednesday to Friday on Lake Erie. Not only is it the sport’s most lucrative event, awarding three fully-rigged boat packages, but it also determines the Lucas Oil Angler of the Year, the most prestigious title in walleye fishing.

Professional walleye anglers are accustomed to trolling Erie’s world-class waters, but typically the events are held on Erie’s Western Basin. The city of Dunkirk is hosting this year’s championship.

The location is intriguing for several reasons. First, it’s common knowledge that Lake Erie walleyes spawn early in the springtime in the Western Basin along the shallow reefs. As the water warms throughout the year, those fish disperse and migrate east – some traveling past Dunkirk as far as Buffalo. Secondly, only a few of the 40 pros competing in this year’s championship have much experience probing the Eastern Basin. In short, Eastern Lake Erie is the perfect playground for the biggest event in walleye fishing.

“I’m really looking forward to having the championship in Dunkirk,” said Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s pro Kevin McQuoid, who currently leads the AOY race, and whose son, Eric, won the 2021 NWT Championship on Minnesota’s Otter Tail Lake. “I’ve never fished (Erie) out of Dunkirk, and I know only a small number of guys have. Lake Erie has a record number of walleyes in the system, and with only a 40-boat field, it’s possible to not see another tournament boat all day; it’s that vast. Plus, the sheer number of 5-pounders in the system is going to make it an awesome event.”

“The city of Dunkirk is excited for the opportunity to host the 2022 National Walleye Tour Championship,” said Mayor Wilfred Rosas. “Lake Erie is one of the country’s top walleye destinations, and this will be a great event for our local fishing community. The area has great attractions that everyone can enjoy. We welcome the anglers and their guests to come experience a beautiful New York summer.”

“Lake Erie is a unique walleye destination,” said Jim Steel, who along with his wife, Diane, serve as the Innovative Outdoors Walleye Challenge tournament directors and also City of Dunkirk committee members. “Eastern Lake Erie is popular for its deep-water trolling. Anglers can also be successful in shallow water. We expect that the anglers will use a variety of techniques to land some heavy walleyes. It’s not uncommon to land a 10-pound walleye this time of year. We are looking forward to what these professional anglers bring to the scale.”

The National Walleye Tour events are televised on the Pursuit Channel, the World Fishing Network and are available to stream on demand through several platforms.

The top prize package in the championship is a Ranger 620FS Deep V Boat with a Mercury 250 XL Pro XS valued at $89,995 plus $30,000 with second place earning a Ranger 2080MS with a Mercury 250 XL Pro XS valued at $76,995 plus $15,000. The top prize for the Co Angler in the Championship is a Ranger VS1882 Angler valued at $44,995 plus $6,000.

Anglers will take off each day at 7 a.m. Eastern time from Holiday Harbor at Chadwick Bay Marina, located at 30 Central Ave. The daily weigh- ins will take place at the Dunkirk Pier, which is located at 2 Central Avenue, beginning at 3 p.m. Eastern time. The full field fishes each of the first two days with the top 10 advancing to the third and final day. The winner in each division is determined by the heaviest cumulative weight.

The public is invited to attend the daily weigh-ins, and there will be a free kids fishing clinic after the weigh-in at about 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.

The National Walleye Tour consists of four regular-season events and a no-entryfee championship. Pros compete against other pros, and co-anglers compete

against other co-anglers. For more information on rules and tournament payouts, visit www.nationalwalleyetour.com.

Hoyer, Martin Victorious At National Walleye Tour Finals

national walleye tour co angler

DUNKIRK — After battling some of the best anglers on Lake Erie out of Dunkirk Harbor this week at the National Walleye Tour Championship, the top 20 anglers — the top-10 pro-anglers and the top-10 co-anglers — headed out on Day 3 in search of a big walleye bite.

Heading into Friday — or Championship Day as the pros call it — John Hoyer led the pro side with a two-day total of 10 walleyes for a total of 70.60 pounds.

“I don’t plan on changing up my program, except that there is one area I want to try if the weather cooperates,” said Hoyer before the 7 a.m. send-off. “Hopefully, we reach the area and return safely, because I know there are good fish there, as long as I get them.”

Collin Martin left the scales on Day Two with 63.18 pounds, putting him barely in first place for the co-anglers.

“As luck would have it, I will be fishing with Hoyer again on Championship Day,” said Martin, noting the pair fished together on Day 1. “The winner of either co- or pro- side is a life changing event and I hope we can experience that.”

“The excitement of hosting the NWT Championship on the totally redesigned Dunkirk Pier on the waterfront here is exciting for the City of Dunkirk,” stated Mayor Wilfred Rosas. “To be able to showcase to the anglers and world with the coming TV program being filmed for the Pursuit Channel is a great deal for the City of Dunkirk.”

Going into the final day of competition a few of the pros knew what they needed to do to get to the top of the leaderboard and take home a new Ranger Boat and Mercury 300 motor worth $90,000.

“I have had a great time at the NWT Championship and this week has been really good for me,” pro-angler Drake Herd shared. “Now, if I can find the big fish bite is the secret for us on the Championship Day.”

The largest crowd for the three-day tournament had gathered on Dunkirk Pier in front of the NWT stage, the anglers all made it back and were tied up to the dock, and Chautauqua County Executive PJ Wendel, said, “We are excited to see all the folks out today on this beautiful day in Dunkirk and, after speaking with some of the NWT staff and anglers, we know what it takes to host more of these major fishing tournaments. We have some of the best walleye fishing anywhere and a super lakeshore and pier here in Dunkirk. The future looks bright for these types of events.”

NWT’s Anthony Wright brought Day Two leaders Hoyer and Martin to the stage and introduced them to the crowd.

Duane Hjelm, who has had the hot hand on the NWT circuit this season and was leading the championship with a three-day total of 90.87 pounds, was standing on the stage with co-angler Timothy Berg, who had three-day total of 92.33 pounds. There was only one team left to weigh-in. That was the team of John Hoyer and Collin Martin.

Wright had all four anglers stand on the stage together as they received a round of applause from the hundreds of spectators that gathered for this very moment. On the line was three brand-new Ranger Deep V fishing boats. The winner on the pro-angler side would receive a new Ranger 621FS Pro with Mercury 300 XL, plus cash and prizes; second place pro will receive a Ranger 620FS with Mercury 250XL Pro and cash and prizes; and the top co-angler would receive a new Ranger VS1882 Angler plus $6,000. Wright noted that out of the four anglers on the stage, three of them would be leaving with brand-new Ranger Boats valued at more than $200,000.

The stage was set as Hoyer and Martin placed their bag of five walleyes on the scales. For what seemed like hours, but was only seconds thanks to the state-of-art weigh-in system NWT uses, the scales finally locked at 31.73 pounds, for a three-day total of 102.33 for Hoyer, the 2022 NWT champion. As high-fives were exchanged on stage, Wright announced that the team’s weight gave Martin the 2022 NWT Co-Angler championship with a total three-day weight of 94.91.

As both Hoyer and Martin were awarded their championship trophies, media and family members crowded the stage in an attempt to capture the moments that changed two young men’s lives forever.

Second place for the Pro-Angler went to Duane Hjelm; third-place honors went to Jason Przekurat with 81.37 pounds for three days; fourth place went to Keith Kavajecz with final weight of 81.12 pounds, and rounding out the top five was Austin Ragotzkie with 80.14 pounds.

On the Co-Angler side, Timothy Berg took second place, with third place going to Chris Rhinehardt with 82.11, fourth place going to Kolebe Ferguson with 81.92 pounds and fifth place going to Drake McCarthy with 81.43 pounds.

From the smiles on the faces of the winning anglers and spectators, the city of Dunkirk hosted a first-class event, with a sure sign of more major fishing tournaments to come.
