2. Kuala Lumpur

A trip to Malaysia would be incomplete without a visit to Kuala Lumpur. There’s plenty to do here for the whole family.

place to visit in malaysia with family

Kidzania is a mini-city that’s built and run by kids. Your kids can try out various adult jobs like being a fast-food worker , a fireman, or a beautician.

Let your children roam around and explore the whole place. There’s plenty of adult supervision everywhere to ensure no harm comes their way.

Petrosains Discovery Centre

It’s a great hands-on Science Museum that will bring out the Einstein in your little kids. There are so many exhibitions here, that there’s something for every kid, regardless of their age.

For example, there’s a hurricane simulator, an International Space Model or you can even build your own model car.

The Petronas Towers

Petronas Towers Playpark in Kuala Lumpur with Kids

Smack-dab in the middle of the city, the Petronas Towers are the tallest twin towers in the world at 88 stories high. It might just be the most well-known landmark out of all of the amazing landmarks in Malaysia . Gaze upon it from below or go up to the Skybridge to get a panoramic view of the whole city.

The Kuala Lumpur City Park is right next to it, very close to the shopping center . It’s a giant playground that even has a shallow pool with a small waterfall. Check out the Fountain Show at night as well.

Tip:  If you are interested in any additional things to do around the city, check out our post about the  day trips from KL  here.

3. Langkawi

Langkawi , in the Andaman Sea, is an archipelago comprising 99 islands with beaches, rainforests, and mountains. It’s the best place to let your hair down and get some R&R.

attractions in Langkawi, Sky Cab and Sky Bridge

While you’re here, you must check out the cable car. It’s a 15-minute ride to the top of Mount Cincang offering unparalleled views of the lush rainforests, islets, and waterfalls below.

You will also find the Sky Bridge up here too – although I was too scared to take my toddler on a walk across it.

Underwater World Langkawi

place to visit in malaysia with family

This enormous aquarium is home to 500 species of marine animals, like seals, penguins, seahorses, flamingos, and many more.

The highlight of this aquarium is a 15-meter walkthrough tunnel where you can get up close and personal with giant stingrays, huge sharks, and sea turtles. Imagine how much fun your family will have posing for pictures with the sea life here.

Langkawi Wildlife Park & Bird Paradise

This aviary hosts over 2,500 birds from 150 different species, like Eagles, Toucans, Hornbills, Parakeets, Owls, etc. Some of these species are native to the islands, which you’ve never seen before.

There’s also a man-made waterfall, where the birds are free to fly around and interact with visitors.

Pulau Payar Marine Park

Head on over here if you’re into watersports like snorkeling and diving. Abound with bright, colorful corals; the Coral Garden is a sight to see.

Tip:  If you are interested what’s the best time to visit than check out our post about when is the  best time to go to Langkawi  here.

Penang Island is famous for its historical George Town (with its British colonial architecture and Old Hindu and Chinese temples), its beaches and diverse cuisine.

Entopia Langkawi family trip in Malaysia

Entopia is a living garden, which has up to 15,000 free flying butterflies of 60 different species. This garden recreates the natural habitat of a huge number of creatures from insects to reptiles.

Entopia Langkawi Malaysia with Kids

If you want your children to learn about nature and all its unsung heroes, make sure you don’t miss out on this one.

We all loved it here, but our 2-year-old was in absolute butterfly heaven.

Penang Hill

Penang Hill Malaysia

Take a trip to the top of Penang Hill on a funicular train ride. It’s a one-of-a-kind tram with a very steep incline.

Once there, you can check out the historical and religious landmarks at the top or enjoy the rich flora and fauna along the nature walk. There are also play parks for the kids to enjoy up there as well.

5. Petaling Jaya

Often forgotten by most travelers, Petaling Jawa was developed as a satellite township for Kuala Lumpur.

Sunway Lagoon

place to visit in malaysia with family

A sprawling amusement park, it has a water park, a horror-themed ‘scream’ park, and an ‘extreme’ park with sports like paintball, kayaking, go-kart, and bungee jumping.

It even has a large zoo with a broad range of birds, reptiles, and mammals. Be sure to check out the white lions.

This park is located 45 minutes away from KL, so makes for a great day trip for the kids.

Tip: Don’t wait in a long queue with your kids. Grab these tickets online , skip the queue and show the mobile voucher to them at the front to change it over for wristbands.

It’s a popular destination as it serves as a gateway to Sarawak.

Semenggoh Wildlife Centre

Semenggoh Nature Reserve, Kuching, Malaysia

Established in 1975, this is a large rehabilitation centre for injured and orphaned orangutans.

It’s meant to rehabilitate Orangutans and educate visitors at the same time.

Take a jungle trek and get a close-up view of the numerous Orangutans in this animal reserve.

Tip: I love booking the  Semonggoh Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre Tour from Kuching on Viator because it includes hotel pick up and drop off from Kuching (I can’t be stuffed dragging my toddler onto a bus). You can book this great tour here .

7. Perhentian Islands

The Perhentian Islands, Malaysia

These are a group of stunning, coral-fringed islands which will make the perfect ending to your trip. No huge moments, viewpoints, or other distractions, it’s just you and the endless ocean.

White, sandy beaches flanked on one side by jungle-covered hills; it’s the ideal place to get in some quality family time and detox from the hustle-bustle of life in the city.

How to Get There:

The best way to get to the Perhentian Islands is to fly to Kota Bharu. Next, grab this cheap transfer from the airport to Kuala Besut jetty . And then hop on a speed boat for 30 to 45 minutes to reach the islands.

Or Book Organized Transfers to Make Life Simple:

  • Book this transfer from KL to Perhentian Islands
  • Book this transfer from Penang to Perhentian Islands
  • Book this transfer from Cameron Highlands to Perhentian Islands

There are two sections to the country of Malaysia – Peninsular Malaysia, which is south of Thailand and then there is East Malaysia which is located on the northern part of Borneo Island.  To help understand where all these places to visit in Malaysia with kids are – I’ve split the locations between the Peninsular and Borneo.  I’ve further split the locations on Peninsular Malaysia to Kula Lumpur (the capital of Malaysia), north of Kuala Lumpur, South of Kuala Lumpur, and the Peninsular East Coast.  This should help with your itinerary when your planning what to do in Malaysia with kids.

Kuala Lumpur

1. petronas twin towers.

What to do in KL with kids

When it comes to places to visit in Kuala Lumpur with kids, a visit to the iconic Petronas Twin Towers must be on the list. The two 452-meter high towers are shaped like 8-pointed stars, and they are magnificently connected by a Skybridge at 170 meters up. Tickets can be reserved ahead of time for a trip to the Skybridge and the observation deck on the 86th floor. The duration of the tour, between 45 minutes and one hour, is perfect for families. Kids will love zipping up the elevators and taking in the sky-high views of KL.

We recommend staying at the Ascott Kuala Lumpur . It is located right at KLCC, for easy access to all the area offers. Two-bedroom, two-bath well-appointed rooms are great for families who want a little extra space. But, no matter where you are staying in Kuala Lumpur, the train system will get you to the twin towers. Just make your way to the KLCC Station. Nearby KLCC Park is also one of the great places for kids in Kuala Lumpur, with its 2-acre playground, expansive wading pool, and nighttime illuminated water fountains set to music.

2. Kuala Lumpur City Centre

Places to visit in Kuala Lumpur for kids

If you’re wondering what to do in KL with kids – heads straight to KLCC (Kuala Lumpur City Centre) which is right in the middle of Kuala Lumpur and right in the middle of KLCC is the large KLCC Park which is one of the great places to visit in Malaysia with kids.

This park is big with great views of the iconic Petronas Twin Towers. However, the best bit is the huge playground. It seems to go on and on and on with tons of play equipment. There is also a water playground pool area perfect for cooling down in the hot temperatures.

Surrounding the park are lots of fun family activities with KL Aquaria (big aquarium) and Petrosains Discovery Centre (science museum). There is also the big Suria shopping centre under the Twin Towers which is the perfect place to find lots of food options. You could easily spend a whole day in this area.

Kuala Lumpur is great to visit at any time of year and I recommend you visit KLCC Park in the late afternoon which is when it’s a bit cooler and many local families will be here giving it a great vibe. It’s easy to get here from anywhere in Kuala Lumpur and there is a train station under the Towers.

3. Batu Caves

Contributed by Dani from Diapers in Paradise

Batu Caves - Places to visit in Kuala Lumpur for family

The Batu Caves, located about half an hour north of Kuala Lumpur is another one of the great places to visit in Kuala Lumpur for family.  This cave complex sits at the top of 272 stairs, and houses several ornate Hindu shrines. But the most impressive feature is the 140 ft. statue of Lord Murugan that stands next to the steps, visible from far outside of the temple complex.

272 stairs might seem like a lot for kids to climb, but there is plenty of room to take breaks – and indeed, plenty of people stopping to rest along the way.

Children will be delighted when they reach the top to find several chickens and monkeys roaming around, looking for hand-outs. Do be aware that the monkeys can bite, so keep an eye on young kids.

To get to the complex, you’ll wade through a massive souvenir and cheap goods market, but the view once you make it to the top of the stairs is worth all of it! The caves themselves are very interesting, full of shrines and fruit bats, with stunning scenes of sunshine pouring in from above.

We found this to be our favourite thing to do on a day in Kuala Lumpur with a baby !

4. KL Forest Eco Park

Contributed by Lee from The Travel Scribes

Places for kids in KL

Looking for places for kids in KL to take a respite from the many modern shopping malls and bustle of Kuala Lumpur’s busy streets? Head to the KL Forest Eco Park, an oasis of green in Malaysia’s concrete capital.

The park, formerly known as the Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve actually dates back to 1906, where an area of about 11, 000 square metres was set aside for a tropical rainforest. It’s now one of the only large green spaces in the city and the only remaining rainforest in the town itself.

The park is fantastic for kids: saunter around the paths to see a plethora of trees, herbs and different creepers, all well signposted. It’s a relatively easy walk with good paths as long as you stick to the well-worn trails!

The highlight of the park though is definitely the Canopy Walk, a large steel and wood aerial suspension bridge which snakes through the forest itself. The children will love traipsing along the walkway, with amazing views down to the ground and of the nearby Menara KL Tower. It’s also totally safe, as it has steel guards on the sides and sturdy staircases for little feet.

Make sure you enter the park from the Lower Hill main entrance and not the back entrance, next to the Bukit Nanas MRT station. This back entrance is not well-kept and so the paths can get a little muddy in places.

North of Kuala Lumpur

5. fraser’s hill pahang.

Where to go in Malaysia with kids

Just 2 hours drive from Kuala Lumpur is the historic hill station of Fraser’s Hill. Set among jungle-clad mountaintops, Fraser’s Hill (also known as Bukit Fraser) is the perfect weekend getaway from KL.  Fraser’s Hill is definitely a very unique and captivating family-friendly destination in Malaysia.

Designed as a retreat in the 1920s, the fresh mountain air and cool temperatures appealed to British residents of the Klang Valley. Today, what remains is a slice of ‘Old England’ nestled deep in the Malaysian jungle. The village centres around a very British-looking scene of a clock tower, post office and attractive stone bungalows. Fraser’s Hill is famous for birdwatching and hiking. The cooler weather makes many of the hikes less challenging for little legs!

For families, there are so many great things to do in Fraser’s Hill from riding a pedalo on the reservoir at Allan’s Water, horse riding at The Paddock or a round of mini-golf in the town’s park. Jeriau Waterfall just out of town is beautiful and worth the drive. Finally, you can’t visit Fraser’s Hill without popping to The Smokehouse for a cream tea (scones, jam and tea) served English-style on the pretty terrace overlooking the dense Malaysian jungle, Kids and adults alike will adore this quirky taste of 20th century Britain in the heart of Malaysia.

6. Penang Hill

Contributed by Ming from Flyerism

Places to visit in Malaysia with family

Penang Hill, the landmark of Penang is a fantastic kids-friendly holiday destination. It’s located at Ayer Itam, about 9km from the centre of George Town. The peak stands at 833 meters above sea level, and it can be reached by cable car. If you’ve got an active family, you can hike your way to the hilltop via Heritage trail from Penang Hill Lower Station. The distance is about 5km, and it takes roughly 3 hours to reach the top, passing through spectacular jungle scenery with exotic flora and fauna.

When you are top of the hill, there’s no better place to get a panoramic view of Penang Hill than Curtis Crest Treetop Walk at The Habitat. You can also stroll along the Langur Canopy walkway to experience the beauty of the rainforest and observe monkey behaviour.

To relax and unwind, Kopi Hutan at the Monkey Cup Garden is highly recommended. It’s just 10 minutes walk from the Habitat. In this nice little cafe surrounded by trees and creepers, you will want to sample delicious yet reasonably priced cakes. Their staff are very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. Upon request, they will be happy to show you pitcher plants and animals (eg. frogs and scorpions).

7. Eating Cendol in Penang

Contributed by Wendy from The Nomadic Vegan

place to visit in malaysia with family

Cendol is a sweet and refreshingly cold dessert that’s popular throughout Malaysia. Its main ingredients are shaved ice, coconut milk, palm sugar syrup and jelly-like noodles made from rice flour. The noodles are flavoured with pandan, which gives them a bright green colour, making this a fun treat for kids. In addition to these core ingredients, possible add-ons include sweet red adzuki beans, durian, or jackfruit. All of these ingredients are fully plant-based, making cendol one of many vegan dishes in Malaysian cuisine .

The Malaysian Department of National Heritage has even declared cendol to be a Malaysian heritage food, so it’s something every visitor should taste to experience the local cuisine. While you can find cendol at basic restaurants and roadside food stalls all over the country, one especially famous place to try it is Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul on Jalan Penang. A bowl of cendol is the perfect way to combat the heat and humidity in Malaysia.

8. Penang Youth Park

Contributed by Alex from Get Out with Kids

Where to go in Malaysia with kids

One of our favourite places to visit in Malaysia is Penang Youth Park . Also called Penang Municipal Park, it is located in George Town. It is just a few minutes from the town centre by car (or Grab) and it is well worth the visit, especially if you are travelling with kids!

The parkland features a collection of activities that both parents and children can enjoy, including

  • a skating rink/bowl,
  • swimming/splash pools,
  • colourful jungle walking trails,
  • giant chess boards,
  • unique street art
  • multiple playgrounds for all ages and abilities

With the weather in Penang being almost always hot and humid, we particularly enjoyed the swimming/splash pools after a walk through the jungle trails and a play in the playground. The pools provide a great place to cool down and, let’s face it, most kids love a splash in the water on a hot day! (Tip: If you are going on the weekend, go early in the morning to avoid the crowds in peak times!)

Afterwards, we went to the café for a cold drink and a snack. Make sure you take cash though as they do not accept credit cards.

Whether you’re seeking a relaxing experience or a journey packed with exciting activities, the Penang Municipal Park can accommodate for everyone, proving that it deserves a spot high up on your George Town bucket list.

Best places to visit in Malaysia with kids

Ipoh in the central Malaysian state of Perak is one of the best places to visit in Malaysia with kids. With a street art scene to rival Penang’s, hunting down murals and taking creative photos is an Ipoh activity beloved by adults and kids alike.

Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic – the same man behind many of George Town’s most famous murals – was invited to create a series of works in Ipoh a couple of years back. His moody, large-scale paintings reference the town’s heritage and inspired a local street art movement to blossom. As well as Zacharevic’s murals, you can find literally hundreds of colourful street artworks by local artists dotted all around the city.

Mural Art’s Lane in Ipoh’s New Town is a great place to start. Some paintings were created by school children or community groups. Many portray local festivals and traditions, so you can learn a bit about Perak culture as you go. In the old part of Ipoh, Wife Lane, Concubine Lane and Market Lane all boast colourful murals between their cafes and boutique shops. A lot of the paintings are interactive, making it a lot of fun to pose for photos.

Street art is just a small part of Ipoh’s draw. The city is known for its food scene and natural beauty, including limestone karsts and cave temples right on the fringe of the city. It’s a year-round destination, but it’s best to visit outside of the hot summer months.

From Kuala Lumpur, you can get to Ipoh by train (around 3 hours’ journey time). Since it’s almost smack bang in the middle of the peninsular between KL and Penang, Ipoh is a great place to break up the overland journey.

10. Cameron Highlands

Contributed by Colin from Parenting, Passports and Profits

Places to visit in Malaysia with family

The Cameron Highlands is a popular short break for many Malaysian residents and travelling families.

We wanted to try some hiking and were keen to experience the cooler temperatures that allow a variety of plants to happily grow there. The Cameron Highlands produces many of the vegetables that cannot grow in other, much hotter, areas of the country.

There are several trails to choose from including a small peak or two. ‘Mossy Forest’ is maybe the most famous trail in the area, however, it’s only really accessible by car and a good hour or so round trip. The ones we tried are accessible/walking distance from the Tanah Rata village.

Two of the big crops in the area are tea and strawberries. So we prioritized visits to the historic Boh tea plantation and a strawberry farm where you could pick your own. We also visited a butterfly and insect park.

The Cameron Highlands are a few hours’ drive from Kuala Lumpur or Penang. From KL, you head north with the choice of two routes. One is modern and straightforward. The other is the old scenic, winding road up into the mountains. You will need transport while you are there.

Places to visit in Malaysia with kids

Melaka City, also spelled Malacca, in southwestern Malaysia, is probably one of the best places to visit for a family holiday with kids. Just 2 hours away from Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur, it can easily fit into your travel plans as a day trip, but once you are there you might consider staying a few more nights with all the kid-friendly adventures you can have in this UNESCO Heritage city.

The heart of Melaka City is Jonker Street, which is filled with beautiful colonial buildings. As you take a walk through the street, you can break up the historical walk by taking a stopover at Mamee Jonker House, which houses a museum and cafe that offers exciting activities and hands-on workshops for kids.

The best time to travel to Melaka is during the dry season which is in the months of April, May, and October. Among all the hotels there, the most family-friendly accommodation would be The Double Tree Hote l. Instead of welcome drinks, the whole family gets warm cookies upon arrival, making the check-in process a lot sweeter. Instead of getting a cramped room with 4 beds, you get 2 adjoining rooms that will give you a bit of privacy while your young ones are sleeping safe and sound next door. The hotel is also equipped with a pool and a Kids’ Club.

12. Legoland

Contributed by Sally from Our 3 Kids V the World

Best place for family trip in Malaysia

Legoland Malaysia Resort opened in 2012 and includes Legoland Malaysia and Legoland Water Park (see below), both are in the same complex and you can easily walk between them provided you have purchased entry tickets to both.

The great thing about Legoland Malaysia is it’s accessible from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore as it is located in Johor Bahru. However it’s a little further from Kuala Lumpur, you’d be unable to do it in a day trip like we did from Singapore. Legoland has you covered though with their very own Legoland themed hotel onsite and being in Malaysia its very reasonably priced.

The temperatures at Legoland Malaysia are generally warm and humid like most of Malaysia, its rarely cool so purchasing tickets for both is the best option as when the kids get hot and bothered you can cool down in the Legoland Water Park. If you are only visiting Legoland you could easily make it a day trip but if you visiting Legoland, Legoland Water Park, Hello Kitty World and Thomas Town , which are also in Johor Bahru you might consider staying a few days.

We hadn’t visited a Legoland before and the kids were starting to get a bit older so I was happy to visit the Malaysian Legoland as it is much easier on the budget and it was very quiet when we were there. If you go mid-week you’ll likely have low crowds. I think Legoland is perfect for younger kids aged between 3-11 yrs old.

Click here to book your Legoland tickets online.

13. Legoland Water Park

Contributed by Noel from Ten Thousand Strangers

Best place for kids in Malaysia

The LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort is a popular destination in Johor Bahru for travellers crossing the border from Singapore to Malaysia. Especially for those travelling with kids, no one must proceed to their intended destination in Malaysia without passing through Legoland.

However, much to the popularity of the main resort, the LEGOLAND Water Park situation right next to it remains a little less known attraction. Most people think more about the roller coaster rides and other known adrenaline-pumping rides. Not many think about water slides and sprinklers.

Malaysia is known for its ridiculous humidity and unpredictable rain pattern. No one knows when it’s going to rain and if it didn’t, the humidity makes you sweat all day. Which is what makes the LEGOLAND Water Park a better choice to its more popular counterpart.

Fans of extreme park rides will have their chunk of adrenaline rush while enjoying the cool water splashes at the Tidal Tube — a 240-foot high enclosed tunnel with heart-thumping twists and turns. The Red Rush will have the whole family enjoying a thrilling ride down a 312-foot long water path. Kids will have their time building a watercraft they can ride along a river-like track.

But what most kids will enjoy the most is the Joker Soaker. It’s an ordinary-looking water playground but the thrill and fun increases a hundred times over whenever the giant water bucket gets filled and pours 300 gallons of water down every four minutes.

East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia

14. islamic civilisation park.

Where to go in Malaysia with kids

Located near Kuala Terengganu (KT), the Islamic Civilisation Park is one of the main attractions of the Islamic Heritage Park alongside the Crystal Mosque. The best way to visit with kids is via Grab for about 10 RM from downtown KT (best place to stay), or you can catch the public bus if you’re up for it.

Inside the park, you’ll find 23 replicas of the most recognised mosques from around the world. They’re all built to different scales (1:1.7 to 1:22) which is impressive and with information boards in English in front of each mosque, you get to learn a lot about the Islamic culture not only in Malaysia but around the world. The replicas aren’t all cramped up, so you’ll be walking a lot unless you take the small train or a golf buggy (extra cost).

Your ticket also gets you a small passport with a photo of all the mosques inside so you can tick them off as you learn about each one.

Visit early, as there’s little shelter when you’re exploring the park and it will get hot (there’s a small train you can catch around the park). When you buy your ticket, you get a free meal (basic) so don’t worry about filling up before you visit. If you’re up for a long day, the Terengganu State Museum is nearby and is one of the biggest museums in Southeast Asia.

15. Perhentian Islands

Contributed by Carrie from Trains, Planes and Tuk Tuks

Best place for kids in Malaysia

I can’t think of a better beach destination in Malaysia to explore with kids than the Perhentian Islands . These two islands off the east coast of mainland Malaysia are the ultimate low-key tropical paradise. Families looking for 5-star amenities will appreciate the resorts of Big Perhentian. But you can’t beat Little Perhentian for beautiful beaches and peace and quiet.

You and your family can spend your days playing in the sand on Long Beach, or hop in a longtail boat to one of the quieter bays. Almost all of the beaches are kid-friendly — no waves or riptides.

You can reach the Perhentians on a one-hour speedboat from Kuala Besut, near Kota Bharu. It costs 70 ringgits per person round-trip. You can also book shuttle/boat combo tickets from any destination in peninsular Malaysia.

The best time to visit the Perhentians is April through August. They’re inaccessible during the monsoons between September and February, and in March the boat trip is too rough for families with young kids.

If you have extra time, stop for a night in Kota Bharu before visiting the islands. The staff at Zak’s Homestay organize cultural activities led by local students — your kids will get a kick out of the participatory traditional dancing shows.

  16. Tiomon Island

Contributed by Michael from Time Travel Turtle

Best place for family trip in Malaysia

Tioman Island is about two hours off the east coast of mainland Malaysia and, while it’s not quite as isolated as the Perhentian Islands, it’s a relaxing option if you’re looking for a tropical escape away from the tourist crowds.

Along the part of the coastline that’s developed, you’ll find larger hotels that can easily accommodate a family or bungalow-style guesthouses that could be a better option. Some of them open up straight onto the beach, where the calm warm water is irresistible.

The shops will offer snorkelling and diving tours and there are boats that will take you to other parts of the island to explore. There is also a footpath along some of the coast and more adventurous hiking trails that lead into the jungle.

I think the best range of accommodation and laidback restaurants is around ABC beach, but there are more exclusive resorts on other parts of the coast. Either way, it’s going to be laidback and stress-free.

The best way to get to Tioman Island is by ferry from Mersing and costs 75 RM. There are a few ferries each day and the journey takes about two hours. But the schedule changes constantly, so it’s worth making sure of the departure times before you arrive.

17. Juara Turtle Project

Contributed by Emma from Small Footprints, Big Adventures

Things to do in Malaysia with kids

My family and I volunteered at the Juara Turtle Project on Tioman Island for a week together, and we loved it! Juara Bay is a beautiful part of the island that’s very safe for swimming and snorkelling, and the Turtle Project is a professionally-run volunteer program that accepts unskilled helpers and children. We helped with many tasks including patrols looking for new turtle nests, cleaning the hatchery and headquarters, excavating a nest that had hatched, and seeing a full nest of hatchlings scurry to the water!

We also cleaned up the beach one day, collated recycling for the whole bay, made souvenirs and took guests for tours through the visitor centre. There was never a dull moment but we also had some downtime to enjoy the beach and the rest of the Bay. Volunteers receive a delicious cooked breakfast and lunch each day, and we also got to use the Project’s recreational equipment during breaks. This means two meals a day, snorkelling and kayaking down the nearby mangroves is all accounted for in the volunteer fee. Best of all, we also made friends from all over the world, many of whom we’re still in touch with today.

18. Kuching

Contributed by Ania from The Travelling Twins

Borneo - Places to visit in Malaysia with kids

If you are thinking of visiting Malaysia, a trip to Borneo is a must, and the city of Kuching is an interesting place to explore with the kids. The word Kuching in Malay is very similar to the word for cat, so Kuching has become the Cat City. In the town, you can find cat statues, cat murals and even a Cat Museum. But that’s not the main reason why you should visit Kuching and Borneo with kids. The main reason is orangutans!

Borneo is one of only two places in the world (the second one is Sumatra) where orangutans live in the wild. In both places, the populations are declining as their rain forest habitat is being cut and replaced with palm oil plantations.

Just 20 minutes from Kuching is the Semmangoh Rehabilitation Centre (see more info below) where you can see orangutans in the wild. The animals here have been saved from poachers and are re-trained to live on their own. But still, they come for fruit left for them by the carers. It’s very touching to see orangutans in the wild and even better to have them swinging above your heads.

If you fancy seeing different kinds of monkeys – especially the much less pretty proboscis monkey, you should visit Bako National Park, where they live in an untouched habitat.

There is so much to do in and around Kuching with kids , that we were there for over a week and didn’t get bored.

19. Semenggoh Wildlife Centre

Contributed by Taylor from Travel Outlandish

Borneo - Things to do in Malaysia with kids

There are just two places on earth where you can see orangutans living in the wild – Borneo and Sumatra. And as ape populations dwindle worldwide as a result of deforestation and poaching, conservation efforts for these fleeting species have never been more important.

The Semenggoh Wildlife Centre is just outside of Kuching, the capital city of Sarawak in Malaysian Borneo. Just 40 minutes from the city, the rehabilitation centre is home to 31 wild and semi-wild orangutans. The Semenggoh Wildlife Centre aims to reintegrate injured or orphaned orangutans into forest life. In support of that effort, they coordinate twice daily feedings at 9am and 3pm where visitors can come to see orangutans swinging through the trees to collect a feast of bananas, papaya, jackfruit, sweet potatoes, coconuts, pineapples, oranges, and hard-boiled eggs. They’re a population of orangutans who otherwise couldn’t be self-sufficient in finding food, but the wild setting sprawling 1,613 acres makes this wildlife encounter feel far more wild than zoo-like.

Unlike gorilla treks, it’s just $3 to visit these orangutans, and you’re almost guaranteed to see them if you visit Borneo between April to November (outside of the fruiting season).  But even if you’re not lucky, it’s an important and interactive way for families to explore the impacts that humanity is having on fragile ecosystems around the world.

20. Niah Caves

Contributed by Penny from Globe Trove

Borneo - Places to visit in Malaysia with kids

Few people talk about the Niah cave network that lies in the Sarawak district of Malaysian Borneo. Located about an hour’s drive away from Miri, I find that this is one of those locations that you should take children to in South East Asia because there is so much that they can learn from their surroundings. Plus it is a lot of fun!

The cave network is intense and the trek is simple since it is paved by wooden planks. I managed to do the trek in my second trimester so it is definitely doable. It is however better suitable for children who can walk longer distances. A word of advice is to turn back when you get tired because it is a long walk. Oh and carry a torch for the dark cave as you walk in pitch darkness. The limestone caves are also home to an archeological dig site where the oldest human remains were ever found. Did I mention that you can also catch a glimpse of some cave paintings if you make it to the end of the trek?

21. Kota Kinabalu

Contributed by Evie from Mumpack Travel

Places to visit in Malaysia with kids

The capital of Sabah on the island of Borneo, Kota Kinabalu is full of awesome family activities.

Some of the things you can do in Kota Kinabalu including taking a 20-minute ferry to the islands and beaches of Abdul Rahman Marine Park for snorkelling and swimming or an overwater zipline between Gaya and Sapi Islands.  Families will also enjoy eating fresh seafood at the nightly harbourside hawker markets, exploring the Sunday Markets in Gaya Street, enjoying the city views from the Signall Hill or wandering the streets to see the street art.  I’d also recommend a visit to the Masjid Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu mosque which is just stunning.  If you don’t have appropriate dress don’t panic as you can hire it at the on-site kiosk.  Also be sure to visit the Mari Mari Culture Centre which is just a short drive from the city and has a fabulous display of local tribal culture and history.

Kota Kinabalu is easy to reach from Kuala Lumpur and other Asian hubs.  There are also frequent flights to domestic destinations like Kuching and Sandakan. The city centre is an easy 15 minute drive from the airport.

Family accommodation in Kota Kinabalu varies from fabulous family-friendly five star resorts to basic hostels.

22. Kinabatangan River Cruise

Contributed by Jodie from Ala Jode

Best place for family trip in Malaysia

For families who love nature, the Sabah region is the place for family trip in Malaysia.  Without a doubt, the best experience of all has to be a safari cruise down the Kinabatangan River. Surrounded by Borneo’s lush rainforests, the Kinabatangan River is largely untouched. It’s far enough into nature that you could enjoy it yourself, but close enough to the main roads and Sandakan airport that you don’t need to endure a painful journey to get there. When you’re there, you might spot an orangutan in a tree, an elephant drinking from the river or a rhinoceros hornbill taking flight from a tree. Many of the animals around this area are endemic to Borneo, making it a true once in a lifetime experience to enjoy together.

If you can, spend a night on the Kinabatangan River to truly immerse yourself. Sukau Rainforest Lodge is one of Nat Geo’s Unique Lodges of the World. An eco-focused hotel, the staff are attentive and activities are organised to be fun for the whole family. When you’re not on safari, the little ones can attend talks about the wildlife, swim in the family pools or relax in the communal room. You can also take the family out onto Sukau’s rainforest walkway, which stretches far into the trees, and see what wildlife you can spot.

Top 21 Things To Do In Kuala Lumpur With Kids [2024]

Here are the best things to do in KL with kids. Read through and select the ones that fit your interests and time frame. We have written about these attractions based on our own experiences travelling here with babies, toddlers, preschoolers, school kids and, now, teenagers!

Travelling to Malaysia with kids? Listen to our best tips for families here and find out what my kids themselves think about travelling in Malaysia.

Explore The KLCC Playground

KLCC Park

Best playground in the world? Possibly! Our kids rave about the KLCC Playground. So much, in fact, that we had to return a few times during our first visit to KL and many times since. So this received our highest rating: best place for kids in KL!

The KLCC Playground is a massive 2-acres playground within the KLCC Park by the Petronas Towers. Even during busier times, you’ll find there is still plenty of space for everyone. The two photos above this are both of this area.

We recommend visiting in the late afternoon as it’s cooler. Also, as the top Kuala Lumpur attractions for families, both locals and visitors hang out here in the late afternoon, so there are lots of youngsters to enjoy playing with and it has a great vibe.

If energy levels are still high, head to the free adjacent water playground and shallow pools. Definitely the biggest problem we had with this place was getting our kids to leave.

Address: Persiaran KLCC, Jalan Ipoh, 50450 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan

Visit The Petrosains Discovery Centre

Petrosains Discovery Centre

An awesome centre, which is basically a science museum, children adore spending time here, making this a highlight of places to visit in KL for kids.  There are so many hands-on educational exhibits that you could easily spend 3-4 hours as your children conduct science experiments – some with controlled explosions!

Science and technology are presented in a fun and entertaining way, in an easy to navigate “museum-style” concept.  You’ll find space age exhibits through to fossils, with everything divided into 11 main interactive showcases.

Budding geologists or seismologists will be in heaven in the Exploration section and F1 fans will adore the Speed area.  And ensure to catch the Dark Ride, shaped like an oil drop, your “ride” takes you through serene rainforests, up mountains and diving into seas, all with a view to showing you Malaysia’s dramatic landscapes.

Games are dotted around the exhibitions with staff on hand to explain the science behind everything.

It works for toddlers too as the first time we visited here, our oldest was only 2, and we had a great time.

However long you’re staying in the city, we recommend you include this great kids attraction in Kuala Lumpur into your itinerary.

Address: Petronas Twin Tower, Level 4, Kuala Lumpur City Centre

Have An Under-The-Sea Experience At Aquaria KLCC

Aquaria KLCC Aquarium

Conveniently located next to the Petronas Towers and close to Petrosains listed above, this aquarium is a must-see on any list of things for kids to do in KL.  Home to over 150 species of marine life, possibly the star attractions are the tiger sharks and the lethal sea snakes!

A great place to discover on a rainy day, you can spend a few hours exploring the different watery landscapes, from the highlands and flooded jungles of Malaysia to the Amazon basin, coral reefs and open ocean.

Our highlight was the 90-metres walk-through tunnel, where massive stingrays and manta rays soar above your heads.  And, if you have the time, dare you to try the up-close-and-personal Diving with Sharks program or perhaps the Cage Rage experience where you’ll be submerged into a tank but within the safety of a cage.

All in all, we found this one of the best places for kids in KL.

Address: Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Jalan Pinang, Kuala Lumpur City Centre

Visit The Berjaya Times Square Theme Park

Berjaya Times Square Theme Park

Surprisingly, some shopping centres in this city are some of the best places to visit in Kuala Lumpur for kids.  And Berjaya Times Square is probably the top of these.

Reputedly one of the world’s largest shopping centres, we seemed to spend a lot of time here!  With great food options – at good prices – the kids were kept entertained by some rather cool random stuff.  The “Piano Stairs”, that played piano notes as we walked up and down was definitely a highlight!

However, the standout attraction was the amusement park – probably best suited for preschoolers, making this our winner for toddler activities in Kuala Lumpur.  The children’s area has around eight different rides, although there are rides here for all ages.

Overall, this is the largest indoor playground in Malaysia and can be found on the fifth floor of the Berjaya Times Square mall.  Split into two zones: Galaxy Station for adults (+13’s) and Fantasy Garden for children, whatever your child’s age group this is some of the best kids entertainment in KL.

This is fantastic for bad weather days or if you’re suddenly in the mood for a hair-raising roller coaster ride on the Supersonic Odyssey!

Address: Level 8, Berjaya Time Square, No. 1, Jalan Imbi

Check Out The KL Bird Park

KL Bird Park

The main attraction in the famous 60 hectare Lake Gardens, the KL Bird Park is advertised as the world’s largest covered bird park and a top venue in KL for kids.  With over 30,000 birds from 200 species from all corners of the globe, it’s quite an adventure!

It prides itself on being one of the major places to visit in Kuala Lumpur with family, and with most of the birds free to fly around the venue, this was another highlight of our trip.  Accustomed to visitors, the birds often perch on shoulders and heads, which might frighten toddlers.

But for most children this is delightful and you can then purchase small packets of seed to hand-feed them.  We took endless photos whilst hand feeding colourful parrots, which our children rated as one of the best kids activities in Kuala Lumpur.

You’ll see stunning peacocks, parakeets and macaws. Our favourite was the Flamingo Pond and the hornbill area.  Try to time it right for the ostrich and eagles feeding sessions or to catch one of the regular bird shows.

It’s not just the birds that are great either. The gardens here are superb, and it’s a very enjoyable place to wander.

Children are very well catered for here with a small playground, the gardens and even some small rowing boats.  If you are wondering what to do in Kuala Lumpur with family and have a half morning spare in your itinerary, make a beeline for here.

Address: 920, Jalan Cenderawasih, Perdana Botanical Gardens

Visit The Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park

Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park

Looking for a nature-intensive kids attraction in KL?  Then you’ve come to the right place.  Just on the edge of KL Lake Gardens, you’ll find hundreds of butterflies fluttering freely under a high netting canopy at the sweet Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park.

Feeding on colourful hibiscus flowers, the butterflies are a pretty sight.  Hot and humid under the canopy, the park has a tropical feel. There is a maze of footpaths winding through lush vegetation.  Our children enjoyed playing along the paths, the little koi-filled ponds, small waterfalls and – our top favourite – the turtle pond.

Our kids also found the massive beetles a highlight.  These can be viewed along with some other creepy crawlies, such as large stick insects making this one of the fun places for kids in Kuala Lumpur.  There’s also a fairly good educational slant to the visit too with the breeding cycles of butterflies and moths explained.

Not the best butterfly park we’ve been to, yet you can still mark this as one of the places to visit in Kuala Lumpur for family to enjoy.

Address: Jalan Cenderawasih, Tasik Perdana

Explore The Lake Gardens (Kuala Lumpur Perdana Botanical Gardens)

Lake Gardens KL

Often promoted as having some of the best Kuala Lumpur activities for families within its gates, Lake Gardens is truly massive at over 200 acres!

Full of Kuala Lumpur children’s attractions, such as museums, the KL Bird Park (above), the Perdana Botanical Garden (with a Hibiscus and Orchid Garden), a Sculpture Garden, the Butterfly Park (above) and, unsurprisingly, a Lake!

In the middle of KL, it makes for an easy location to reach from wherever you’re staying.  Open every day from 7am to 8pm, it’s free to enter – though you are required to pay an entrance fee for certain landmarks within the grounds, like KL Bird Park.

There are some impressive landscaping and thanks to its grand size; it doesn’t get too crowded except for weekends.  You can easily spend a whole day here, discovering all the different venues and activities. This makes this one of our top places for kids in Kuala Lumpur.

Do note though that this area is big and walking around it can be sweaty work.

Address: Jalan Kebun Bunga, Tasik Perdana

Go On A Food Tour

Kuala Lumpur food tour Preparing delicious street food delights in Chinatown

If your kids enjoy food then a food tour can be a surprisingly awesome activity with kids. I have been surprised how well food tours can work for families.

You walk around a section of the city learning about the history and the culture while trying food and drinks. I find the constant feeding keeps my kids happy and open to learning more!

Simply Enak food tours  have a tour they especially recommend for families, Kuala Lumpur Street Food. On this tour, you learn about the history and cultural influences that make Kuala Lumpur and its food what it is today. It includes visits to local shops, tradespeople and, of course, street food vendors. You learn about traditional Chinese medicine and how herbs can be used to heal as well.

We did this with our kids aged 6, 11 and 12 at the time. They loved watching handmade steam buns being made and tasting a crazy amount of food and drinks such as Indian rotis, laksa, char kway teow, teh tarik (the local tea), baked goods and more. If you haven’t tried the infamous durian before, you’ll also get the chance with some durian puffs.

These tours do their best to cater to dietary requirements and fussy eaters.

Click here to see more information about this tour and use the discount code, DIVE30 for RM30 off your tour price. Kids tickets are also heavily discounted.

You can see our full review of doing this tour with our kids here or watch the following video to see what it’s like. This was filmed when we did this exact tour with our kids.

Visit Little India

Brickfields Little India, Kuala Lumpur

A surprising favourite location for our children, enamoured by the Indian cuisine and vibrant energy of the area, Kuala Lumpur’s Little India (called Brickfields) has curries to fit every level of spice!  We returned quite a few times for some delicious lunches.

And the shops were a highlight too, with lots of sparkly bangles, colourful saris and delicious Indian sweets.

Try to visit here during festival time, when the streets are decorated in splendid colours and music plays from almost every shop!  It’s definitely one of the more interesting places in Kuala Lumpur for kids.

Address: Jalan Tun Sambanthan, Brickfields

Explore Chinatown

Dive Into Malaysia at Chinatown KL

Looking for some free things to do in KL with family?  Head over to Chinatown for a few hours, and wander the quaint alleys and lanes.  You’ll find stalls selling almost anything you need (and lots more that you don’t!).

With the stalls opening daily around 11am, it’s best to drop by around lunchtime – taking in some delicious food – before hitting the market area.  You’ll also find some old temples and pretty Chinese shophouses, making this a lovely way to spend a few hours in Kuala Lumpur with children.

The food tour, mentioned above, explores around here.

Address: Petaling Street, KL City Centre

Make A Splash At Sunway Lagoon

Sunway Lagoon views from the suspension bridge

Just a short drive from the centre of Kuala Lumpur, Sunway Lagoon is a fun theme park.  One of the top KL attractions for family, many different themed lands are waiting to be explored.

With water slides that whirl, a river ride, surf beach, wave pool and even a revolving pirate ship, this will probably be your kid’s favourite vacation day, and our pick of fun things to do in Kuala Lumpur for kids!  We had an absolute blast here.

Part of a much larger complex, which incorporates the Water Park, Scream Park, Amusement Park, X Park, Night Park, Sunway Lost Lagoon and Wildlife Park, it is best to make this a full day out!

Address: 3, Jalan PJS 11/11, Bandar Sunway, 47500 Subang Jaya, Selangor

Click here to buy discounted tickets now. You can also read our full review here.

Check Out The Sunway Pyramid

Sunway Pyramid KL

Located adjacent to the Sunway Lagoon, the Sunway Pyramid Shopping Centre has a plethora of fun activities.  Spend a half or full day here. Enjoy ice skating and visiting The Parenthood indoor play area.

For the older children, there’s a bowling alley, cinema, amusement rides, and arcade games; a plethora of Kuala Lumpur children’s activities.

Near KL Airport, if you only have a short stopover combine this with a visit to the Sunway Lagoon, and stay at any one of the Sunway hotels above the shopping centre, like the Sunway Resort here.

Address: No. 3, Jalan PJS 11/15, Sunway City, 47500 Petaling Jaya, Selangor

Have The Best Day Ever At KidZania Kuala Lumpur

KidZania Kuala Lumpur Theatre

Our children were already big fans of KidZania before visiting the Kuala Lumpur version. It did not disappoint. We have enjoyed a few full days discovering KidZania Kuala Lumpur over the years, and it’s our absolute top pick of kid friendly activities in Kuala Lumpur

If you’ve never been to one then KidZania is a miniature city made for kids where they can undertake various activities representing different careers. Kids can be firefighters, medics, police, store clerks, cooks, pilots, journalists, doctors, nurses, photographers, couriers and even tax collectors.

Each “career” lasts for various amounts of time – usually 15 or 20 minutes – and for each activity, there’s usually an educational aspect to it. For example, kids learn the value of hygiene before making food or fire safety before going to fight a fire.

Kids can earn money (in the local currency, Kidzos) from the jobs they do and get paid in Kidzoswhich can then be spent on activities with a cost where they usually get something to take away (like a hamburger from working in the hamburger restaurant or milk from working in the milk bottling factory).

There’s a department store where kids can spend their earnings too, but it isn’t so easy to do as you need a lot of cash to buy much.

The awesome thing about KidZania, though, is the staggering level of detail. Kids can be involved in organisations they see in the real world.

Many activities have a uniform of some sort that looks close to the real thing. Firefighters wear hats and coats that look like real Malaysian firefighting gear, for example.  There’s even a small ambulance and fire truck that the medics and firefighters ride to their call-outs complete with lights and sirens.

Activities have age guides with many recommended for ages 4+. Younger kids may strugg to get much out of a visit here.  On our most recent visit, my daughter was just a month off 13 and still absolutely loved it.

However, for the majority of visitors to the city, a day here is a highlight of family things to do in Kuala Lumpur.

Address: Curve NX, 18, Jalan PJU 7/5, Mutiara Damansara, 47810 Petaling Jaya, Selangor

Experience District 21 Kuala Lumpur

District 21 KL

Guess what? Yes, that’s right… It’s another indoor theme park for children! This time billed as an “adventure theme park”, District 21 is set within 101 City Mall Putrajaya.

However, it’s quite different here as children face a set of challenging obstacle courses making it one of the more unique activities for kids in Kuala Lumpur.

Sprawling across 6,500 square metres, this indoor theme park features a post-apocalyptic setting with metal beams, steel walls and colourful graffiti.  You can imagine the Terminator being very at home here!

Guests pass through a two-step decontamination chamber – where they’ll be asked to put on protective gloves and non-slip socks.  Briefed on a few safety rules, they are released into the park to discover LED-lit climbing walls, high-speed slides, trampolines and aerial obstacle courses and a zipline.

Our favourite section was the Maze, where you’re suspended metres above the ground and have to maneuver through a labyrinth of steel tunnels, cages and complete some rather confusing mind-challenging puzzles!

For younger children, there are a few kid-friendly rides such as a carousel, pedal go-karts and an easy rope obstacle course.

Safety is well addressed, with padded flooring, helmets, knee and elbow pads.  Terrific fun and a favourite for most youngsters, this is our select venue for kid-friendly things to do in Kuala Lumpur! Although note it’s about a half hour drive from KL Sentral.

Address: AT 6, IOI City Mall, IOI Resort City, 62502 Putrajaya, Wilayah Persekutuan Putrajaya

Enjoy At Waterworld i-City Theme Park

Attached to the ever-popular i-City, fast becoming one of Shah Alam’s and Selangor’s top tourist attractions, Waterworld i-City is a great fun water theme park.

Only 40 minutes outside the city centre, your kids will have a blast riding some great water rides.  The highlight is the vortex ride, known as the Ultimate Tornado.  Image you’re caught in flowing water, dropping from a faucet and spiralling down a plug hole, and that’s the Tornado!

There are also 4 slides within the waterpark, where you can race your friends and family lying face down on rubber mats.  There’s also a family raft slide, where 4 people ride a rubber tube.  And, for younger children, there are kiddies-twin-slides – slightly tamer but still excellent fun.

After the slides, the whole family can enjoy the artificial wave pool, bobbing up and down, with or without a tube.  And there’s a lazy river to glide along and a colourful Aladdin-themed kids play-pool.

With vigilant lifeguards, lockers and clean surroundings, it’s great fun for a morning or afternoon.

Address: i-Gallery, Jalan Multimedia 7/Ah, I-City, 40000 Shah Alam, Selangor

Have Fun At SkyTrex Adventure

SkyTrex Adventure KL

Seeking some serious fun and adrenaline-inducing activities?  Wondering what to do in Kuala Lumpur for kids that is extraordinary? Spend a day at SkyTrex Adventure, with outdoor zip line obstacle courses, rope-climbing and flying fox, all set in the lush Shah Alam Agricultural Park.

45 minutes outside of KL, you and kids will spend your day swinging, climbing and flying!

Divided into three obstacle courses – according to difficulties and each with minimum height restrictions – the venue is only open at weekends and it’s advisable to book ahead. Children under 12 years are required to have a parent/guardian in attendance throughout.

The easiest course – Little Adventure – is ideal for children around 8 years. The second is Big Thrill, more geared towards adults but children below 13 who reach the minimum height requirement can still join in.

Take a picnic (don’t forget your charcoal if you want to BBQ), and dine at the elevated wooden platform, the Skydeck.  Our older kids rated this as the best place for kids in Kuala Lumpur!

Address: Batu 20, 1/2, Jalan Sungai Congkak, Kampung Padang, 43100 Hulu Langat, Selangor

Explore The Farm In The City

Located in Seri Kembangan, Farm In The City is ideal for lovers of the outdoors.

Divided into several sections, our favourites were the reptile corner and the bird aviary.  You’ll also find turtle and tortoise sections, a snake sanctuary, along with deer, bunnies, iguanas, marmosets and peacocks.

This is a top venue for interacting with animals – from photos to hand-feeding. With animals that seem extremely well cared for, this makes for an enjoyable trip!

Address: Lot 40187-40188, Jalan Prima Tropika Barat 1, Pusat Bandar Putra Permai, 43300 Seri Kembangan, Selangor

Check Out The Kuala Lumpur National Zoo And Aquarium – Zoo Negara

Zoo Negara

As zoos go, this isn’t the best, but if you have a free morning and are wondering where to go in Kuala Lumpur for kids, the Zoo is always an option.  And, if your kids are up for seeing some animals, there are lots to be found here.  Wild animals from most parts of the world are on display including leopard cats, pumas, leopards, striped hyenas and many more.

You’ll also find a Reptile Park with a fair selection of snakes, a Malaysian Elephants exhibit and Sumatran orang-utans in the open-concept Ape Centre.

Inside the zoo is also one of Malaysia’s oldest public aquariums, along with a kid-friendly exhibit called Children’s World.  Here, your youngsters will enjoy getting up close with rabbits, ducks, chickens, parrots and guinea pigs.

Be sure to glimpse the newest additions, two pandas from Sichuan, China, and catch an exciting animal show.

Address: Jalan Taman Zooview, Taman Zooview, 68000 Ampang, Selangor

Introduce Your Kids To Malaysian Food At Jalan Alor Food Street

what to do in KL at night - Jalan Alor night food court

When the sun starts going down, there is one hands-down winner to what our family likes to do and that’s head to Jalan Alor Food Street.

Jalan Alor Food Street is a lively night market with open air tables, stalls, restaurants and more. It’s got a great vibe and it’s tons of fun. It’s also located in a great central spot within Bukit Bintang which makes it easy for most families to visit.

For about 500 metres, there are countless food stalls and restaurants lining the street. You won’t have any problems finding something to eat. Try to order as many different things as you can so your kids can learn what they like.

A great reward for the kids trying new foods is to finish up with some delicious coconut ice cream. It’s sold by many stalls in fresh coconut shells, and it’s oh-so-good.

Visit The Islamic Arts Museum

 Islamic Arts Museum

Last on our list of things for kids to do but high on the places of interest for kids in Kuala Lumpur, this is somewhere to teach your children a little about the customs, history and culture of Malaysia.  Welcome to the Islamic Arts Museum.

A wonderfully quiet and cool respite from the manic city, this museum is one of the best we’ve ever visited.  With around 7000 artefacts there’s lots to view!  There are Islamic tapestries, hand-written Korans, carpets, jewellery and scale models of Islamic buildings.

The museum also caters to younger children, with a children’s library, daily craft and weekend workshops.

Generally, a cheaper city to visit, even the high-end hotels can offer exceptional value compared to what you would pay in other capitals, and there is a great range of hotels suitable for families.

A sprawling city, the best areas to stay are Bukit Bintang and KLCC with Chinatown being a good option if you are on a tighter budget.

Below, I’ve listed a few different places to consider including a budget, mid-range and more expensive option.

The Most Popular Places to Visit in Malaysia

place to visit in malaysia with family

The most popular places to visit in Malaysia are stunning — and the country's excellent infrastructure makes getting to them relatively painless.

Although Malaysia is always ranked well among the most visited countries in Asia, China usually steals the limelight and #1 spot. Long-term budget travelers often shun Malaysia as being "too expensive" (mostly because alcohol does cost more than in Thailand). Meanwhile, short-term vacationers in Southeast Asia seem to skip Malaysia for lack of time.

But Malaysia has a lot of beauty, diversity, and adventure on offer, as showcased by these tempting top destinations.

Kuala Lumpur

You'll most likely fly into Kuala Lumpur when traveling to Malaysia, so this one's a no-brainer. But unlike some other big cities in Asia where travelers arrive and get out of town as soon as possible, Kuala Lumpur is a worthwhile destination of its own.

The mix of Malay, Chinese, and Indian influence means you'll have no shortage of culinary exploits in Malaysia's capital city . The cultural diversity is a big part of Kuala Lumpur's allure. Take a short walk or jump on the extensive train network and you can see the delights of numerous cultures.

Kuala Lumpur has no shortage of unique neighborhoods to explore . Interesting sights such as the Petronas Towers , the Perdana Botanical Garden, and the Menara KL Tower provide plenty of enjoyable distractions before you head farther afield in Malaysia.

TripSavvy / Jess Macdonald

Malaysians are proud of their big island on the west coast — and they should be! The colonial city of Georgetown was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has plenty to offer in the way of museums, a seaside fort, historic homes, and most importantly, a famous street-food scene.

Numerous artists have left their marks in the form of murals along the streets of Georgetown. Cafes, shops, and things to do can be found dotted throughout.

Penang is considered one of the best places in Southeast Asia to sample delicious street food of all types. The waterfront esplanade known as Gurney Drive in Penang is lined with stalls and eateries for trying local Malay, Chinese, and Indian treats , among others.

The Perhentian Islands

Backpackers and budget travelers love Malaysia's Perhentian Islands , especially Perhentian Kecil — the smaller of the two islands — where fine sand and excellent snorkeling/diving fill the day before parties start at night.

Nearby Perhentian Besar — the big island — caters more to families, couples, and travelers who are willing to spend more to enjoy the blue water and skip some of the partying. Regardless of the island you choose, getting to the Perhentians requires taking a speedboat. There are a few challenges for setting up shop on the islands .

The Perhentian Islands are very seasonal . Accommodation can be difficult to find on Perhentian Kecil in July, the peak month, but the islands are mostly empty during the winter months due to rain and stormy seas.

Malaysian Borneo

The option to exchange dirty concrete for green rainforests and abundant wildlife is only a cheap, quick flight away ! Visitors to Malaysia often stick to the mainland and forget about the natural wonders on earth's third-largest island only a short hop away.

The Malaysian part of Borneo is divided into two states: Sarawak in the south and Sabah in the north. Both have different vibes and charms . The Rainforest World Music Festival held outside of Kuching each summer is one of the most exciting music-and-culture events in Southeast Asia.

From endangered orangutans to rainforest canopy walks and some of the best diving in the world, Malaysian Borneo should definitely be a part of any trip to Malaysia.

Spelled locally as "Melaka," Malaysia's Peranakan city of Malacca is a worthwhile stop for cultural, historical, and colonial sites . UNESCO even declared Malacca a World Heritage Site in 2008.

Visitors are rarely disappointed by the old town in Malacca. If nothing else, the relaxed vibe is pleasant enough to keep people around for a few days. The close proximity to Kuala Lumpur makes getting there by bus easy. Train isn't an option in Malacca.

Tip: Many shops and museums close in Malacca on Tuesdays — plan your visit accordingly!

Taman Negara

Westend61 / Getty Images

Taman Negara literally means "national park" in Malay, and well, that's what it is! Taman Negara is Malaysia's oldest national park and is considered to be one of the world's oldest tropical rainforests. A long canopy walkway gives visitors a chance to see life high in the trees that normally isn't visible from the ground.

You can enjoy waterfalls and beautiful trekking, bird spotting, rafting, fishing, night safaris, and there's even a chance to see wild elephants — if you're very lucky. Tourists sleep across the river in Kuala Tahan and then take cheap boats to the park entrance.

Some serious guided trekking is available in Taman Negara as is caving.

Cameron Highlands

Malaysia's green Cameron Highlands are one of the few places in Southeast Asia where you'll actually want a jacket or warm blanket at night. After sweating across tropical climates, you may appreciate the change of climate.

The Cameron Highlands are like nowhere else in Malaysia. You'll see plenty of lush scenery, tour beautiful tea plantations, and enjoy access to decent hiking trails that weave through plantations and around volcanoes.

Strawberry farms, butterfly gardens, and flower greenhouses are all enjoyable distractions to be found in the Cameron Highlands. The climate provides good conditions for growing fresh vegetables and producing delicious local honey.

Tioman Island

Located on Malaysia's east coast not too far from Singapore, Tioman Island is a different kind of island destination . Accommodation and excellent diving are surprisingly inexpensive; development is relatively minimal for such a nice island. Abundant nature and scenery make up for the island's severe shortcomings in the culinary department.

Tioman is carved into many different beaches; you'll have to choose when arriving by boat. Some beaches are secluded and surrounded by jungle. ABC Beach is arguably the most popular beach, particularly for budget travelers. Moving between beaches by boat is the regular option, unless you're up for a jungle hike through the interior.

Tioman Island enjoys duty-free status just as Langkawi does, but don't even consider taking your tax-free liquor across the border into Singapore !

simonlong / Getty Images

Located off the northwest corner of Malaysia, Pulau Langkawi is one of the top island destinations in Malaysia for both foreign tourists and Malaysians.

With an airport and ferries connecting it to the mainland, as well as a large tourist infrastructure, Langkawi could unfairly be called Malaysia's version of Phuket, the busiest island in Thailand.

Langkawi has many tourist attractions on offer such as Malaysia's largest indoor aquarium, a cable car, and the Sky bridge that allows views across the island. Unfortunately, the drone of jet skis cause the busiest beaches to be less serene. Duty-free status means that beer is sometimes barely more expensive than bottled water!

Flights from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi can be found for as cheap as US $20! Getting to the island is fast and inexpensive .

Selangor actually describes Malaysia's most developed and populated state that leads up to Kuala Lumpur's urban sprawl. Here you'll find a Formula One racetrack, the National Zoo of Malaysia, and enormous theme parks including an indoor snow park.

Selangor is busy and booming; shopping malls sprawl in many directions. When you can't possibly shop anymore, head to the nearby Genting Highlands — Malaysia's version of Vegas perched on top of a mountain. The First World Hotel and Plaza is the world's largest hotel with 10,500 rooms and a theme park.

But Selangor isn't just about concrete and glowing signs: The famous Batu Caves there are a Hindu shrine with the largest statue of Lord Murugan (the god of war) in the world. The Batu Caves draw large crowds, especially during the Thaipusam holiday .

When you're ready to be wooed by nature, the abundance of fireflies along the river in Kuala Selangor is a dazzling spectacle worth seeing!

Can't decide between visiting dive sites and tropical beaches, hiking through mountains  or exploring swish city centers? Deliberate no more – Malaysia has you covered with its amazing array of things to do.

This Southeast Asian nation has an astonishing variety of landscapes, cultures and cuisines. In the cities, minarets, mandirs and Chinese temples share the skyline with space-age high-rises. Beyond the urban bustle are rainforests, mountains and radiant beaches .

From Peninsular Malaysia to the island of Borneo , traditional arts, crafts and recipes endure – even as cities hurtle towards the latest architectural and gastronomic trends. Here are Malaysia's unmissable experiences.

1. Sip tea at the source in the Cameron Highlands

Once upon a time, Malaysia's sweaty British colonialists fled to higher ground, founding hill stations where they could retreat from the heat and jump-start a tea industry. The most famous are in the Cameron Highlands , and today it's mostly tourists (local and foreign) who come to seek respite from Malaysia's muggy lowlands.

These 1300m to 1829m heights (4265ft to 6000ft) offer plenty of hikes , as well as strawberry plantations and souvenir stalls where you can burn a few ringgit. But the quintessential Cameron experience is sipping a bronze-hued cuppa while looking out at the rippling carpet of tea plantations.

Planning tip:  Boh Sungei Palas not only has emerald hillsides to gaze upon, it also has the most informative displays on tea-making. Alternatively, there's a splendid tea house overlooking the estate at Cameron Valley Tea House  and a further-flung option at  Boh Tea Garden , which offers guided tours. You're sure to find an experience that suits you (...to a T).

A huge gold statue stands in front of a rainbow-colored staircase leading up into a cave system in the rocks

2. Climb up into the magical Batu Caves

Sheer limestone cliffs rise above you. Ahead stretches a staircase of 272 steps. And looking you smack in the eye is an imperious gilded statue, the Hindu god Lord Murugan.

Newcomers to Malaysia won't soon forget their first heady ascent to Batu Caves , nor the cheeky macaques that beset them on all sides. But this popular day trip from Kuala Lumpur (just 13km/8 miles, and easily done by train) also draws repeat visitors galore. Tourists, pilgrims and locals all clamor to experience this natural wonder and spiritual spectacle.

This complex of limestone caverns has entrancing temples, each with dioramas showing mythical scenes. The central Temple Cave has been a Hindu shrine since 1890. After touring inside its two yawning chambers, take a side quest across a short bridge to the quieter Ramayana Cave , where dioramas illustrate the eponymous Sanskrit epic poem of duty and virtue.

Planning tip:  If the regular crowds don't daunt you, time your visit for the Thaipusam festival (late January or early February) when crowds of devotees descend upon the caves, some partaking in ritual piercings – it's an immersive and unforgettable event.

3. Eat at the best food markets in George Town, Penang

The capital of Penang island is awash in street art, festooned with British Raj–era buildings, and crammed with boutiques selling arts and crafts. But before hitting these George Town attractions, heed your grumbling stomach… The best things to do in Penang revolve around eating and drinking – and state capital George Town has the biggest banquet.

In a city rife with food markets, elegant cafes, and everything in between, the only dilemma is where to begin. Our dream menu features chicken curry at venerable Indian spot Hameediyah , slurping Hokkien mee (noodles) at Lorong Baru Hawker Stalls , and following our nose to grilled satay skewers and spicy-sweet rojak salad at Anjung Gurney Night Market . Other must-try dishes are spicy, fishy Penang laksa, and char kway teow , rice noodles sizzled with huge prawns (some of the best are served at Kafe Heng Huat ).

Planning tip:  You'll want to save room for dessert (or two!). Gateaux are worth lingering over at China House , while glistening displays of kuih nyonya (colorful rice and coconut cakes) beg to be snapped up from the markets.

A pair of scuba divers at sea lean towards each other for a kiss on the surface in a tropical location

4. Snorkel or dive in the pristine Perhentian Islands

Culture, check. Food, check. Malaysia is also one of Asia's best honeymoon destinations, especially the Perhentian Islands , where gin-clear waters lap golden sand.

But don't doze off in your sun lounger just yet. Pulau Perhentian is even more magical beneath the water. Snorkelers can spy on coral reefs within reach of the beach (try Teluk Pauh and Shark Point, both on the big island). Better yet, wriggle into a wetsuit and dive among green sea turtles, barracuda and colorful reef-dwellers like yellow boxfish.

The Perhentians are a wonderfully calm (and comparatively cheap) place to take a PADI course before testing your skills among the local nurse sharks (they're harmless). More experienced divers can join excursions down to the MV Union Star . This sunken freighter is known as the "Sugar Wreck" for the cargo it transported before meeting its rusty end; today, the wreck swirls with stingrays and scorpionfish.

5. Scale the sublime summit of Mt Kinabalu

The highest mountain on Borneo, Gunung Kinabalu is Malaysia's first UNESCO World Heritage Site. Viewed from below, this cloud-spearing summit (4095m/13435ft) inspires awe: an outlying peak that rises far higher than its neighbors in the Crocker mountain range. But experienced from the summit, Mt Kinabalu is even more heavenly.

Your penance for this heavenly vantage point? A thigh-burning ascent, some 8.7km (5.4 miles) each way. But every phase of the journey (split across two days) opens up a new natural wonder. The rough steps and stony pathways propel you ever higher above the treeline, past lunar rockfaces, high-alpine grasslands, and tangled carpets of ferns, rhododendrons and bamboo. At Panalaban (3272m/10,735ft), you'll bed down in a hostel for the night… or at least for a few fitful hours because you'll be out of bed early to reach the spiky granite summit at sunrise.

Planning tip:  March to August is dry season for climbing. Limited permits to climb are issued each day, and you have to climb with a guide.

A row of colorful four-wheel cycles stand in a main square backed by a large church building painted red

6. Ride a trishaw around historic Melaka

Trishaws: bone-rattling, traffic-dodging, three-wheeled form of transport. To some, they're a joyride; to others, a menace. But in Melaka , trishaws are out of this world.

This historic port city is home to the blingiest trishaws around, adorned with Hello Kitty neons, the Frozen logo, and lighting rigs that could almost guide lost ships to shore. Lavished in flowers, tinsel and knock-off logos, more than 300 ostentatious trishaws ply their trade in Melaka, some offering history tours.

Aboard a trishaw, you might trundle past the Sultanate Palace and the spiky silhouette of the replica Flor de la Mar . You can spin through Dutch Square , which is lined with pinkish buildings like Christ Church . And as the sun dips below the horizon, your trishaw will begin to twinkle with fairy lights, lanterns and neon signs – it's hard to resist snapping a selfie.

7. Take a hike through Taman Negara

Reality check: for all Malaysia's natural splendor, the country faces serious environmental challenges, like encroachment of palm plantations on forested land. These threats make pockets of unspoiled nature like Taman Negara even more precious.

Literally " National Park ," Taman Negara is 4343 sq km (1676 sq miles) of primeval, protected land crossing Pahang, Kelantan, and Terengganu states. Its 130 million-year-old rainforest is among the oldest in the world (pipped to the title by Australia's Daintree), and along its trails, you're enclosed by the deafening soundtrack of jungle life. Fairy-sized katydids whirr through the forest, macaques chatter in the branches, and hornbills clack their beaks from above. If you're lucky, a gaur, an Asian bison with a distinctive bowl cut, will lumber into view. If you're incredibly lucky, you'll see a glimpse of a tiger, elephant or ultra-rare Malayan peacock-pheasant.

Planning tip:  Whatever your fortunes spotting wildlife, don't miss walking the 45m-high (148ft-high) canopy walkway, taking a firefly boat ride or joining an after-dark hike to see things that go bump (or squeak, or scuttle) in the night.

8. Witness a flight of bats at eerie Mulu Caves

The island of Borneo is an every day Eden, where rainforests and reefs teem with wildlife. Amid this natural abundance, it's challenging to zoom in on one particular spectacle, but Gunung Mulu still rises to the top.

At this national park, toothy limestone pinnacles add drama to a landscape of 60 million-year-old rainforests, twisting streams and deep grottoes. The most momentous experience is seeing the skies blacken with bats pouring out of the mouth of Deer Cave . Up to three million bats hang around in these dank chambers, and their mid-air acrobatics are to flummox hawks waiting for a mammalian mouthful.

Planning tip:  Tours take you inside Deer Cave and amid the spiraling stalactites of nearby Lang Cave, before you step outside to watch the aerial spectacle from around 5pm.

Two women sit by the side of a pool near a waterfall in a jungle

9. Go off-grid on a private jungle island in Royal Belum State Park

What does solitude even mean in the era of smartphones? Find out by going cold turkey on a private island in Royal Belum State Park , way up north in Peninsular Malaysia's Belum-Temenggor Rainforest.

Taking the longboat to the resort, your vibrating phone will fall into a slumber. To replace the constant overstimulus, dive off the island jetty for a swim, sleep in an A-frame tent, and awake to watch for all 10 species of hornbills swooping overhead. You can take guided hikes through the jungle in search of whopping great rafflesia blooms, and watch out for tell-tale elephant footprints in the mud.

10. Join a cooking class in Kuala Lumpur

Malaysia is a confluence of cuisines. There are thriving scenes for Malay, Peranakan, Indian and Chinese food, always with distinctly local and regional twists; try Penang laksa , Ipoh chicken beansprouts, and every variety of cendol (an icy, coconut milk refresher) you can find. Fading colonial influences, like Dutch, British and Portuguese, also lend their recipes to this steaming smorgasbord.

Some flavors will forever be a twinkle in the chef's eye, but you can take a few recipes home by joining a cooking class. Kuala Lumpur is an excellent place to go, offering myriad options where skilled chefs will guide you through recipes like prawn fritters, nasi lemak (coconut rice with all the trimmings) and famous beef rendang .

Planning tip:  LaZat Malaysian Home Cooking has been around since 2007, and offers a changing menu that spans classic rice noodle dish char kway teow , fragrant kapitan chicken and sago pudding.

11. Dive with turtles at Sipadan Island

Malaysia boasts a few marine paradises, but Sipadan is uncommonly remote and wild. The island is an extinct volcanic cone where coral reefs flourish, and palm trees provide scant shade on bone-white beaches. These waters are a catwalk of superstars: head out on a dive and spot big-eye trevallies, hammerhead sharks and two species of turtle – green and hawksbill. They're so abundant that it's not unusual to see a dozen turtles on a single dive!

Planning tip:  The journey to Sipadan takes effort: after landing on Malaysian Borneo, you'll either connect to Tawau or bus onwards to Semporna , from where you can day trip to the island (or stay elsewhere on the archipelago; Sipadan itself doesn't allow overnight stays).

A family of beaded pigs (parent and three babies) snuffle along in the sand of a vast empty beach backed by jungle

12. Look for bearded pigs in Bako National Park

Sarawak's teeming Bako National Park checks off much of the Bornean wildlife ticklist: dense jungle, mischievous monkeys, slinky water monitors and orchids peeping from the ground. More than 190 bird species flit, soar and chatter through Bako, the oldest national park in Sarawak.

So, what makes it distinctive? Firstly, the sea stacks that lend it a dramatic silhouette, sculpted by the action of water (admire them from Pandan Kecil beach). And secondly, the prospect of spotting bearded pigs, whose fuzzy bodies and shaggy snouts make for a gruff and adorable encounter.

Planning tip:  Staying overnight is the best way to maximize chances of a sighting. Take a night walk with an experienced guide who will point the way.

13. Meet magnificent apes in Sepilok, Borneo

We share approximately 97% of our DNA with orangutans, so why not pay these long-lost relatives a visit? Make Sepilok your base: at the 43 sq km (17 sq mile)  Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre , you can watch shaggy apes swing into view. The center pairs young primates with older partners to school them in the ways of the jungle before release. Next, head to Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary , less than half an hour's drive away. Listen for the thundering sound as they race across the wooden boardwalk at feeding time. Their squishy noses and pot bellies have a strange dignity… so like us humans!

Add a third mammalian encounter by visiting Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Centre , which rescues members of Southeast Asia's smallest bear family. There are 45 of these honey-guzzling cuties on site.

14. Get a bird's eye view on Langkawi Island

Langkawi is a true holiday island, with blonde beaches and rugged jungles. The best way to experience its splendor? Get up high.

Ride the SkyCab up to Gunung Machinchang (713m/2339ft), where engineering marvel Langkawi Sky Bridge stands; or drive up to admire views from 881m (2890ft) Gunung Raya. Alternatively, zip-lining helps you feel the wind in your hair and gives you a shot of adrenaline as you fly above the geopark's canopy, startling a few hornbills along the way.

15. Marvel at a spectacular mosque in Kuala Kangsar

Malaysia is studded with magnificent mosques, from Mogul-era marvels to functional modern constructions, but one masjid steals the show for its sheer grandeur: Masjid Ubudiah in the rocky region of Perak. Designed by famed architect AB Hubback, the mosque's whopping gold domes and Italian marble are a visual feast. It's not the only showpiece in town, either: take a spin around Muzium Diraja Kuala Kangsar and the Galeri Sultan Azlan Shah for an extra dose of architectural opulence.
