Grampians National Park

grampians tourist information centre

Grampians National Park is part of the Gariwerd Aboriginal cultural landscape. Parks Victoria respects the deep and continuing connection that Traditional Owners have to these lands and waters, and we recognise their ongoing role in caring for Country.

Explore the natural beauty of the Grampians from its world-famous hiking trails. Discover majestic waterfalls, dazzling spring wildflower displays and awe-inspiring mountain panoramas. Cross paths with kangaroos, wallabies, emus and native birds. Heritage-listed for its Aboriginal heritage, animal and plant life, and stunning natural beauty, the Grampians National Park is one of Australia's most recognisable places. The best way to appreciate it is on one of its many world-class walks or hikes or by taking a scenic drive.

Traditionally known as Gariwerd, this region is home to the largest number of significant and ancient Aboriginal rock art paintings and shelters in southern Australia. A visit to Brambuk – The National Park & Cultural Centre will help you get the most of your trip to these rock shelters.

The Grampians draws walkers from around the world. Hike to the highest peak within the Grampians, Mount William, or explore the plethora of walks around Halls Gap and the Wonderland Range. Views from the Pinnacle are famous, but the steep walk should only be attempted by the fit. If you’re an experienced walker you’ll enjoy the unique challenge of the park’s overnight hikes. Choose from the iconic Grampians Peaks Trail, Major Mitchell Plateau or The Fortress and Mt Thackeray Overnight Hike.

There are more relaxing pursuits to enjoy in the Grampians, too. Go fishing, canoeing or kayaking at Lake Wartook, Lake Bellfield and Moora Moora Reservoir or one of the park’s many other streams and creeks.

Grampians bushfires: Residents faced with critical decisions as properties engulfed, dozens displaced

Grampians farmer Daryl Deutscher often wondered how he would react if an emergency threatened his livelihood, so when embers began blowing over his fence at Dadswell Bridge earlier this week he had moments to replay the scenario he had played out in his mind before.

As flames began to rise on the outskirts of his property, he was forced to make a split-second decision — fight or flee.

"Flame was coming across, burning across the neighbour's paddock, and spotted into my property," he said.

"Mid-afternoon it started to get a bit scary — at my next door neighbour's, I could see a great wall of flame and smoke.

"I couldn't see the house until about eight o'clock [on Tuesday] night because there was so much haze and smoke around his place."

After speaking to emergency services, Mr Deutscher decided to leave his property and make for the nearest refuge centre — but moments later his conscience forced him to turn his car around and return to fight for his animals.

"I wouldn't have gone to town, because I needed to be here for my birds," he said.

"There is no way known you can't be responsible for your stock, no matter what happens."

Half of Mr Deutscher's property was later incinerated by the bushfire that ripped though much of the Grampians, but his house, factory, shed, neighbours and his thousands of birds were untouched.

His neighbour's home also survived.

"It's great to see his house standing there today," Mr Deutscher said.

Fire authorities have confirmed 25 homes have been destroyed in fires in western Victoria this week.

Peter Shaw, from the Horsham Incident Control Centre, has confirmed to the ABC that 24 houses in Pomonal and one in Dadswells Bridge were lost when the blazes swept through the towns on Tuesday.

He said that figure could rise with assessments continuing today. Up to 150 sheep and some wildlife have also been lost.

The Mt Stapylton fire has burnt 4,400 hectares and the Bellfield fire, near Pomonal, has burnt about 2,200 hectares of land.

'I've got to get out of here'

When Sarah Sergeant left for work on Tuesday, she had no idea a bushfire further south in the Grampians at Pomonal would thrust her into the epicentre of a community emergency, where she would be running a relief centre by the day's end.

Approximately 50 residents -- some who have lost their homes -- are seeking refuge at the Stawell Emergency Relief Centre managed by the Grampians Community Health manager of counselling.

"It's very sad. And a bit numb," she said.

Dozens of familiar faces inundated the camp throughout the day as Ms Sargeant watched fire trucks rush the streets of her neighbourhood.

"No-one really knew if their houses were going to be OK."

Rapid assessment teams are in Pomonal counting the number of structures lost.

Pauline Walsh is among the Pomonal residents whose family home was burnt down in the fire.

She lived on 14 hectares of land near the township with her daughter, son-in-law, and two grandchildren.

Her family operated tourist accommodation business Pomonal Cottages Grampians, which featured six cottages, a swimming pool, and camp kitchen facilities set in picturesque surrounds near to the Grampians National Park.

"[My daughter said], 'Mum, you've got to get out of there. It's getting dangerous'," Ms Walsh said.

"It was a mad rush thinking, 'What do I need to take, am I coming back here?' I didn't think it would be as bad as it was.

"The wind was so strong and the fire was in such a dangerous position, you could see it sweeping down the hill side.

"I thought, 'Right, I've got to get out of here.'"

'Significant wall of fire'

Fire fighters from the Ballarat Fire Brigade were deployed to Pomonal at 4.30pm on Tuesday.

Deputy group officer at the Ballarat Fire Brigade Jarrod Pegg said an erratic weather change caused a burnover within 20 minutes of the crew's arrival.

As a result, he made a mayday call from the truck before the crew put down heat protection curtains, activated water sprays and took shelter under blankets.

"We had very little time to react to the stiuation but we were able to get into our truck safely with minimal injuries," Mr Pegg said.

The crew disembarked for a second time at 10pm that night.

"This fire was one of the more erratic fires that I have been to, one of the larger fires," he said.

"Out of nowhere a significant wall of fire came on top of us."

Grampians Wimmera Mallee Water says Pomonal residents should not drink tap water until further notice.

Residents can fill bottles and containers with clean drinking water at the Pomonal General Store.

Anyone experiencing symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea are being urged to seek medical advice.

Elite fire-fighting crews have been helicoptered to remote areas of the Grampians National Park and repelled down into bushland, where they are continuing to fight fire in hard to reach places.

The impact on the Western Freeway is significant -- with multiple trees down -- and it remains closed between Horsham and Stawell.

Fire behaviour across both fires has significantly decreased and both fires have not grown significantly since 8pm Tuesday night.
