Review: Jayco Journey Outback

In 2014 Jayco combined the best of two models, the Destiny and the Sterling, into a new caravan, the Journey. It’s grown to become the most popular in the range of Jayco’s pop-tops, and continues to find new fans thanks to a line-up of sought-after features.

The Journey range is divided into two basic groups, those designed more for highway touring and those equipped for tougher operations on less accommodating tracks. Designated as the 17.55-8 and -9 or Outback models, these are the biggest sellers in the Journey range.

Jayco’s pop-top vans have always been popular with those looking for a lower roof line for enhanced aerodynamics, fuel consumption or storage reasons. They are also sought after by buyers who don’t want to fork out for a larger tow vehicle.

Today they’re increasingly an option for couples moving up from something like a camper trailer, or those moving up from tent camping and looking for more creature comforts. With good ground clearance in the Outback models, tougher set-up and a smaller travelling profile than most caravans, they can still be taken to many of the places you once sought with your camper trailer or tent.

The Outback kit including Jayco’s popular JTECH independent trailing arm suspension package with heavy duty drawbar (120mm deep instead of 100mm), a front jerry can holder, black checkerplate panelling over the lower portion of the body, external 12-volt power outlet, galvanised rear bumper bar, gas bayonet fitting to the exterior for use with an external barbecue and 120 watt roof-mounted solar panel. These vans have a much better resale value and give you that element of extra flexibility no matter what circumstances might throw at you.

The Outback fitout also introduces larger 235/75R15 tougher all-terrain tyres on alloy rims in place of the touring 185R14 rubber found on the highway models.

The downside to this is the weight increases by an extra 150kg and the ball weight increases by 25kg, although neither is excessive.

Since they have a shower fitted they come standard with a 100 amp-hour gel battery for the water pump, a second 82-litre water tank, and a second 9kg gas bottle to run the water heater unit.

All of the 17ft vans, including the 17.55-8 and -9, also come equipped with a Truma air conditioning system. These excellent German-made units do a much better job in extreme conditions and are worth having.

Like all Jayco vans, the tandem axle shower-equipped models have a 475kg of carrying capacity to accommodate the extra water.

The fitout provides for a range of features that are worth having. There are 12 internal layout styles to choose from across the range. One of the attributes brought over from the Sterling was the higher walls. This allows for tinted Dometic double glazed windows built-in blinds and insect mesh.

With the larger windows, zip-out panels in the pop-top walls and a roof-mounted skylight over the bed, the interiors of these vans are bright and sunny.

The fully separate all-in-one bathroom across the rear is the stand out feature. It comes with comfortable layout, plenty of storage spaces and the shower has been improved with a single-piece unit eliminating the risk of leaks.

There are a range of bathroom and kitchen options to choose from. The Outback model as tested came without a normal oven to allow for extra storage, but it is an option. There is a microwave, Smev three-burner gas hotplates and single electric hot plate gas stove with griller underneath.

The extra electric hotplate comes in handy, saving gas when mains power is available, as does the dual-mode water heater. The fridge, which was 110 litres capacity in the Sterling, has now gone up to a standard 150 litre three-way unit.

For sleeping, there’s either an island orthopaedic double bed or two singles, with inner spring mattresses. For peace of mind, all the Journey vans are equipped standard with a Camec security door.

While the Outback vans are designed basically for two, there is a $299 option to purchase an additional cushion and baseboard, which converts the dinette into another bed.

A stand out feature certainly not available in the 1970s is the electrical and entertainment systems. Lighting is all LED and completely wireless. This eliminates the risk of any wiring problems and also means you never have to get out of bed to switch off a light – there’s a remote for that. A USB charging point is standard as well as an 18-inch LED television/DVD player with mounting bracket and wind-up antenna. There’s a Fusion CD/radio system, complete with external speakers.

To complete the outside living experience there’s an optional external shower (with free-standing shower tent if desired) and an external TV socket. To extend your options all Jayco outlets offer an annexe kit.

All the Journey models come with a white Euro-style fibreglass body, with sloping aerodynamic nose. Smart graphics set off the finish and give a sharp style to these vans.

There are so many options to choose from across the range. One certainly worth considering for off roaders is the Coast to Coast Control Panel ($207) which monitors water levels in up to four tanks (two standard plus optional third and waste water tanks) as well as battery charge levels   There is also the excellent Al-Ko Electronic Stability Control to keep your van where it belongs, as well as a longer A-frame, Tregg offroad polyblock coupling, and leather seat coverings.

Pop-tops have come a long way since the first humble camper was introduced by Jayco in the 1970s and they remain as popular as ever. The reason for that is undoubtedly due to their value for money in terms of quality, resale value and great list of standard features.

At $41,563 RRP as tested, it is excellent value.

Jayco Journey: Review

Jayco, being Australia’s largest caravan manufacturer, is in the envious position of being able to offer the largest range of layouts and designs in all styles of vans and pop-tops. Readers will probably be familiar with the entry-level Starcraft range of pop-tops but there is now a new kid on the block, the Jayco Journey. It’s an apt name for a caravan, and I can’t think why someone hasn’t used it before.

LAYOUT & DESIGN

Like many Jayco vans and pop-tops, the Journey is available as an Outback model but I was more than happy with the normal road-going variant, which was more than adequate for my purposes. It comes fitted with standard tandem-axle load sharing leaf spring suspension, whereas the Outback comes with Jayco’s JTECH independent suspension.

One of the differences between the Starcraft and the Journey is that while the former has aluminium cladding, the latter has a composite fibreglass exterior. It has a high-gloss finish and is designed to be both hail and dent resistant. Underneath the fibreglass is an aluminium frame that is filled with polystyrene foam for insulation with 3mm ply covering both sides. From the outside, the Journey pop-top is quite a smooth looking van, aided by the flush style of both the windows and the Camec security door.

Jayco JourneyIMG 3131

Setting up the Journey takes a little longer than a normal caravan, but it’s really only a matter of releasing the four corner clips and raising the roof from the inside, not without having to set the awning to ‘open’ first of course. With the roof raised, the awning out and the corner steadies down, we’re ready to sit back.

BEDROOM & STORAGE

Up front, the island bed takes prime position. With large windows on either side and another in the front wall, there is plenty of light and cross flow ventilation. When extended, and I reckon it will have to be for most people, the bed measures 1.88x1.35m (6ft 2in x 4ft 5in). It’s okay getting around the offside corner but, given the proximity of the kitchen bench, it’s a bit of a tight fit on the nearside.

Around the front wall, the bedhead consists of the usual features – side wardrobes and overhead lockers, set slightly lower than usual allowing for the pop-top, plus bedside cabinets and a small shelf under the window. In addition to the usual reading lights, Jayco has fitted under-locker LED strip lighting for a more subtle effect. Like the rest of the van, the bed lights are controlled by Jayco’s soft touch switching.

Not necessarily a bedroom feature, but still in that area of the van, is the swivel arm fitting for the flatscreen TV that sits above the nearside corner cupboard. Thus located, it can be easily seen from either the bed or the dinette on the opposite side. In addition to the swivel arm, there are the other usual essentials – 240V powerpoint, 12V antenna connection and sound system RCA plugs.

In the cooking department, the kitchen is simply, but adequately, fitted out. It comes with a four-burner cooktop and grill, along with a stainless steel sink with drainer. There isn’t a great deal of working space but the cooktop does come with a flush lid. And with a grill instead of a full oven, there’s plenty of space for drawers and cupboards. As with the rest of the pop-top, there are overhead lockers but these are set lower than usual.

Opposite the kitchen, the dinette is fairly easy to get to from both sides but is definitely only for two people, given the minimal leg room. The single pole-mounted table is well-sized and will swivel around if needed to make getting in and out a little easier. However, given the upmarket status of the Journey, perhaps something like a Zwaardvis swivel might be more appropriate.

Instead of having reading lights fitted over the dinette, like the bed, LED strip lighting is located under the overhead lockers. Still on electrics, in the corner area next to the microwave there’s both a radio/CD player and a control panel that does everything from indicating water tank levels and battery charge levels to turning off all the electrics. It’s quite a handy device.

One of the challenges in a pop-top with a bathroom is closing off the bathroom from the rest of the van. That’s been achieved here with vinyl walls above the fixed internal walls and then simply using a curtain for the door – in many ways, much better than having a fiddly zipped-vinyl door.

Fitted into the bathroom are a nearside shower cubicle, offside cassette toilet and a rear wall vanity cabinet. To fit everything in, the cupboards and overhead lockers are narrower than usual, leaving the wash basin to overhang slightly but also making it a usable size. Given the size of the pop-top, there are a couple of compromises in the bathroom design. However, I reckon they are more than acceptable given what is available.

THE BOTTOM LINE

For a couple, the Journey offers all the contemporary caravanning features that buyers seem to like, yet it is not a heavy van at all. Indeed, it is a very good towing prospect.

Being a pop-top, there is slightly less internal storage than might be available in a conventional van, but I don’t see that as a disadvantage at all.

For those who like a bit of air space around their head, the pop-top does have some considerable advantages. And, all up, I reckon this Journey is a neat little package which will do well as Jayco’s flagship pop-top.

MEASURING UP

  • Easy towing van
  • General layout
  • External boot space
  • Electrical setup
  • LED strip lighting

I would have liked...

  • A bit more room around the end of the bed
  • Better swivel for table

Jayco Journey 17.55-8 Review

It’s been a while since we’ve looked at Jayco’s premium pop-top, the Journey. For the 2016 model year, it’s been given a spruce-up inside with new fabrics, while outside, Jayco has splashed new graphics along its flanks.

DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION

We’re looking at the 17.55-8 Touring model here, which has a 5.18m (17ft) body with a double bed layout (a 17ft model with two single beds is also available). There’s also the 4.88m (16ft) model, which doesn’t have a bathroom but also has a choice of a double bed or two singles.

The Journey is built on a hot-dipped, galvanised chassis, which is well made with no weld spatter or rough joints. The C-channel lateral supports have cut-outs, which help to reduce weight, and the A-frame has a centre-mount jockey wheel, making life easier if you use a weight distribution hitch (WDH). The A-frame rails themselves have nothing getting in the way of WDH C-clamps except for an external tap, which is set back a fair way anyway. Not that you’re likely to need a WDH, as the ball weight is only 113kg at Tare and you’ll probably only add another 40kg to that with a payload.

jayco journey 17.58 3 outback review

The Journey towed very well behind the Isuzu MU-X – it didn’t pitch or sway and its cut-in on corners wasn’t excessive. The relatively clean drawbar design means tight U-turns were also easy to negotiate.

The two 82L water tanks are mounted each side of the wheel set, which augurs well for good weight balance. The gas plumbing is tucked up well out of harm’s way. While sealant is the only way to ensure the pipes and wiring going into the body doesn’t bring in dust and water, Jayco hasn’t gone overboard with it like I’ve seen some manufacturers do. Some of the water hoses could be better tucked away, though, with a few a bit too exposed for my liking.

The Journey’s aluminium-framed, composite external walls look neat and are a welcome step away from corrugated aluminium sheeting. The white over grey decor is conservative, yet details like the smooth walls and moulded rear wall housings (which encase the LED tail-lights) give the overall effect of a modern-looking van. The alloy spare, encased in a neat plastic cover, is mounted low on the rear wall, making it easier to remove and refit. Under the spare is a tubular rear bar, which won’t protect the spare wheel cover from rear damage but does give the lower body good protection.

The fibreglass pop-top roof section is large, encompassing the whole roof up to where the front begins to curve down to the front panel, where an opening window, with mesh screen and blind, is fitted with a gas strut-assisted shield.

The external features are fairly simple here, with nothing you’ve not seen on a pop-top before. External storage is limited to the front boot, in which two 9kg gas cylinders are fitted with a wall separating them from the storage area. While fitting the gas cylinders in the lockable boot is good for reducing the chance of theft – and making for a cleaner-looking A-frame – they do take away potential storage space.

The pop-top is raised by Jayco’s Easy Lifter canopy lifters, one at the front and one at the rear. Because the roof has the air-conditioning unit fitted, it is quite heavy, so lifting it is not exactly a one-handed operation. But once the roof has been lifted into position, there’s generous headroom inside.

The white vinyl skirt adds to the bright feel of the interior and has four zippered, meshed windows – one on each side. The ceiling has a large hatch, screened and meshed, LED lights and the centrally-mounted air-conditioning unit. Double-glazed push-out windows with roller blinds and mesh screens line the van, and the ones in the dinette and bedroom also have curtains with pelmets.

The kitchen is on the nearside, just to the left of the entry door. It could do with more storage and food prep space, although, in a 17ft pop-top you’ll always have space compromises.

There’s a storage locker above the bench and two below. Then there are three ‘Ezi-glide’ drawers (including a large pot drawer) and a small pantry cupboard. The drawers have simple pull-release handles but the runners are not quite as smooth as they could be. The kitchen bench has almost no free bench space, unless you count the sink drainer. However, with the cutting board over the sink and the glass cooker lid closed, you’ll have most food prep requirements covered.

The stainless steel single-bowl sink has a mixer tap which is fed from either mains pressure or from the two 82L tanks via a 12V pump. There’s an inline filter and, of course, hot water drawn though the 22L-capacity gas/electric heater.

Forward of the fridge and microwave is the L-shape dinette. In this case, the dinette table can be removed and re-fitted as a bed base, meaning the Journey has the potential to be a three-berth van. The table itself is a good shape and size for getting around it and the lounge cushioning is comfortable.

There’s storage space under the seat bases, too. On the seat base front panel there’s a two-pole 240V socket outlet and Setec power converter. The 240V circuit breaker is also mounted on this panel – perhaps not the most convenient spot for it. Above the dinette there are overhead lockers as well as the audio system and the control panel for the water and battery levels.

Moving on to the front bedroom, the 1.88x1.35m (6ft 2in x 4ft 5in) island bed is ensconced in a generous cupboard space. There are two lockers above the bed, a hanging wardrobe and a lower drawer and cupboard on either side, and triangular corner cupboards at the foot of the bed. There’s a TV bracket mount and antenna plug on the nearside back wall of the bedroom, where there’s also a two-pole 240V socket outlet.

There’s enough room to step around the island bed and lighting is covered off well with a reading light on each side of the bed and an LED dome light on the ceiling.

The bed lifts on gas struts to reveal a reasonably deep, wide and long storage space. The onboard battery and 12V water pump are also housed in this space, which does encroach on the available storage but also makes access to these vital components very easy.

Finally, there’s the bathroom, at the tail end of the van. There’s a separate shower cubicle on the nearside, a vanity unit in the centre against the back wall and a cassette toilet on the offside. For a 17ft van, it is surprisingly roomy; you don’t feel like you’re squeezed in at all. The vinyl skirt of the pop-top has provision for enclosure of the bathroom, which works well enough but is another thing you have to fiddle with.

THE BOTTOM LINE

While more external storage, more open kitchen bench space and an easier pop-top operation would be nice, the fact is that the Journey is good value for money, well-balanced to tow and well-featured throughout. That its layout is also so well-balanced, with good space provision in the bedroom, bathroom and living area, only adds to its appeal.

Measuring up

  • Good towing balance
  • Well-designed layout
  • Limited external storage
  • Not a lot of kitchen bench space
  • Fiddly pop-top operation

I have a 1756-2 outback 2014 model and i know the older models say 2011 had leaf spring and not the new jtech the leaf spring ones are a few hundread kgs lighter just something to think about i should have got an older model but the jtech is fantistic leaf spring may not suit where you want to take it mmmmm dont know

I have a leaf sprung Expanda that has done the Gibb, parts of the Cape Leuque rd (Quandong Point) Oodnadatta trk from Maree and out through the Painted Desert, Winton to Broken Hill the dirt way via Windorah, Vic High Country etc and has survived everything in between. The coil suspension wasn't available when we purchased ours. Its all about extra preparation with a van and drive to the conditions.

onehdft said: Hi all, I'm new to the forum - just wanted to introduce myself and ask a few questions... Apologies in advance if they have been asked a thousand times before... My wife and I have come from a remote touring background and currently have an Ultimate camper but a growing family and a desire for more comfort means moving to a different model. We are thinking about caravaning it on the formed dirt roads, and then tenting in and out of destinations if we need to... I had a look at the Karavan, Nautilus and Bushtracker which look to be fantastic bits of gear but if I'm honest seem to be overkill for what we want and frankly not affordable for us. The weight in the Bustracker is also a bit of issue although it's a fantastic product- I need to keep any solution to 2000 tare, 150kg ball and a 2500 ATM. My questions relate primarily to the 17.58-3 pop top Outback but am considering the 20 foot full caravan version as well... 1. I'm considerate of machinery, fastidious about tyre pressures and drive very conservatively to the conditions - do you think there will be any issues apart from the odd cupboard or plumbing issue taking these models down corrugated tracks like the Tanami, Gibb, Bridsville, Oodnadatta etc. at their worst.... I can live with doing a few running repairs for a purchase price of less than half the other vans I've mentioned I just don't want to have any serious structural failures. 2. Are Jayco conservative of tare, ball and ATM estimations or pretty close all things being equal - I've already read they can vary with the outback models unloaded...? Are my tare, ball and atm goals unrealistic...? 3. When ordering is there opportunity to do things like supply your own batteries (Lithium would be the go now I'd think) or make small changes such as go for a half height fridge for more bench space etc. or are they all the same and that is it..? 4. A pop-top appeals for weight saving and ventilation - does this bear out in reality, are there lots of pop-top owners wishing they'd gone for the full height van...? 4. Does the air conditioner on the roof of the pop top make lifting the roof a trial...? Many thanks in advance, Cheers, Mark... Click to expand...
