6 Wasatch Resorts in a Day with the Ski Utah Interconnect Tour

Connecting the dots with the ski utah interconnect tour.

The hardest decision to make when skiing in Utah is often, which resort to ski? For the folks who always order the appetizer sampler or suffer from FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), the Ski Utah Interconnect Tour might be for you.

What’s an Interconnect Tour?

Now in its 35th season, the Interconnect Tour links together Deer Valley, Park City, Brighton, Solitude, Alta Ski Area, and Snowbird ski resorts. Participants can depart from Deer Valley and hit up to six resorts—along with some backcountry terrain—on the way to Snowbird with some uphill travel along the way. Or try the more difficult tour, beginning at Snowbird and side-stepping, traversing, and hiking your way through Little and Big Cottonwood.

The thrill for many of the Interconnect Tour is being able to ski the varied resorts in a single day—something that would be near impossible and also wildly inefficient if being done by car. While the resorts of the central Wasatch are nary more than a mountain pass or ridgeline away from each other, these same geographic barriers create three distinct canyons, each with its own road or highway to travel to the upper reaches where the chairlifts begin. Looking at a map really puts all of this into perspective.

It’s no secret the ski industry community has long dreamed of physically connecting these resorts via a few strategically placed chairlifts, gondolas, or roads open through the winter. But, for now, the only way to make a few turns at half a dozen resorts in a day is with Ski Utah’s Interconnect Tour, and a burning a few calories along the way.

Get to Know the Guides

First and foremost, the Interconnect guides are tried and true experts in skiing, snow safety— including avoiding avalanches and other backcountry hazards—and getting their groups safely to their destination while having a whole lot of fun along the way.

Lead guide Deb Lovci has been guiding groups for a few decades through the Wasatch, which she knows like the back of her hand. I’m pretty sure you could hand her a map of the Wasatch with all the words removed and Deb could fill in the name of every valley, peak, stream, and ski line from Alta and Wolverine Cirque to Deer Valley and the Daly Chutes. No wonder Outside Magazine named her Best Ski Guide in 2015. And she does it all on telemark skis. Who needs your heels attached when Supergirl was likely molded after Deb? Fun fact: The large pack she totes around holds enough chocolate for the whole group. No bonking when Deb is in the lead.

44-year old guide Brian Brechwald has an impressive resume as well, though he does tend to lock his heels down from time to time. If there’s a stash of untracked powder to be found, Brian will sniff it out for the group. It’s like a sixth sense.

If you’re lucky, some of the other guides on your trip might be the boisterous Jay Burke, who proudly states his ski preference as “not telemark,” or Luke Ratto, who spends the work week managing skiutah.com and weekends repairing broken gear. Whether you need a lesson in burping the ABC’s or a quick boot or binding repair, these guides deliver.

Private Tours

The standard Interconnect Tour is, well, far from a standard ski day. It’s unforgettable in every way. But, if you’ve done it once before, and/or have a group of strong backcountry skiers who want to work a little harder and reap the powdery rewards, private tours are the way to go.

Private tours are also a great way to slow it down and move at your group’s pace—perfect for families wanting a unique ski day, or a group of friends looking to change things up.

On these tours, your group can work with the guides to decide where to ski with custom start and finishing points, as well as terrain and route opportunities not available on standard tours.

“Private tours give us the opportunity to fit the tour to our client’s ability,” says lead guide Deb Lovci. “If they are hard chargers and want to rack up some vert…we are up for that. Plus, it is nice for the group to all know each other—it creates really fun dynamics!

Who Can Interconnect?

While no previous backcountry experience is necessary, all participants must be advanced to expert skiers in good physical condition. A typical tour includes walking, hiking, and traversing, in addition to skiing diverse snow conditions. Outside the resort boundaries and away from groomed runs, rope lines, and signage, Mother Nature decides the snow conditions. Luckily, the experienced group of guides always seek out the best snow, as this group of snow safety experts wants to ski primo conditions too!

Not sure you can do it? Lovci recalls her favorite guest: “This older, tiny women on the tour for her (I think) 25th wedding anniversary was on her own! Her husband doesn’t ski well enough, and it is something she has always wanted to do. She was so much fun! Lots of moxy.”

Some chocolate may have been involved in this effort, but what happens on the Interconnect Tour stays on the Interconnect Tour. Book your Ski Utah Interconnect Tour online , or call 801-534-1907, Monday through Friday.

The Best Backcountry Skiing Locations in Utah for 2023

Table of contents.

Utah’s licence plates say “The Greatest Snow On Earth,” and anyone who’s gotten in a few backcountry runs can attest to this. By the time any of the 40 annual Pacific snowstorms make their way to Utah, they become proverbial ‘perfect storms’ and dump 500” of amazing, blower powder annually around Salt Lake City and the rest of Utah. All that snow, and tons of backcountry locations only 35 minutes from a major American airport make it easy to have the time of your life skiing the best powder in the world .

Utah backcountry skiing

Wasatch backcountry skiing

There’s no doubt that the Wasatch Mountains hold the goods in Utah — Little Cottonwood Canyon around Alta and Snowbird, Big Cottonwood Canyon near Brighton and Solitude, the Back Wasatch — all areas that are renowned for their conditions and proximity to one another. Not even backcountry skiing in California lets you ski six resorts in one day. Beyond Wasatch, the La Sal Mountains have some solid places to ski right around Moab. There are tons of objectives for every level of skier, from mellow treeline runs like you’d find skiing in Tuckerman Ravine to steep couloirs and low angle meadows. So whether you’re a newcomer looking to earn you turns in the backcountry, crave some expert-level steep skiing, or want to tackle a multi-day adventure with friends, Utah has it all.

When is the best time to backcountry ski in Utah?

The backcountry skiing adventures in Utah usually kick off mid-November and last through April. The region typically gets 500” of snow, and in a good year, conditions can be favorable through late spring. The best month to ski in Utah is February. It typically sees the most amount of snow, with conditions generally staying prime until mid-March.

One last word to the tech-savvy: if you’re sticking around Wasatch, and let’s face it, most of us are, there’s an amazing app called Wasatch Backcountry Skiing Map available on both iOS and Android, it’s not free, but it has ALL the route beta you need to know.

1. Mount Superior

If there were a poster child for skiing in Utah, Mount Superior would be it. For those who’ve skied at Alta or Snowbird, it’s impossible not to draw an eye on Superior with its steep, white encased mass towering 3000’ above the Little Cottonwood Highway. The skiing is really good here. In fact, it’s skiable on all sides, which are comprised of steep, expert terrain where conditions need to be optimal before approaching anywhere near it.

Cardiac Bowl and the South Face

The two main faces for descents are Cardiac Bowl and the South Face. From the Alta trailhead, follow the Cardiff Pass route. Cardiac Bowl and Chutes can be gained after some demanding skinning along the ridgeline, which requires concentration and experience. From the bowl, you can ski to the south side and finish the ascent up the to the summit. If you’re looking for something a little crazier, you can mountaineer up the South Face, but do so with a guide. There’s little margin for error out there.

2. Hogum Fork

When looking west from Snowbird it’s hard to miss the mass of peaks, ridges and chutes choking the skyline. Much of this terrain comprises the Lone Peak Wilderness Area, more specifically Hogum Fork. The terrain here is generally big, steep and above treeline with plenty of diverse options to choose, but you have to earn it.

Put in the work, reap the rewards

Compared to other areas, access here requires a good deal of effort and a big day but the reward of solitude and plethora of five-star terrain is unbeatable. This is a place best suited for experienced backcountry travelers in good shape. It’s also a location where the right snow and avalanche conditions are essential for safe travel.

3. Alta and Snowbird

Believe the hype! If you’re looking for an abundance of dry powder, spaciousness that rivals the backcountry skiing in Canada AND excellent access, you don’t need to head to Colorado for such stellar backcountry skiing —the Alta and Snowbird ski areas are our little slice of heaven right here in Utah. Next-door neighbors, they both have their own unique vibes . But don’t be lulled into a false sense of security due to all the other skiers in the backcountry, more people means greater attention must be paid to snowpack and weather conditions. When in doubt, hire a guide to show you the best the area has to offer.

Alta backcountry skiing

One good thing to know about Alta: the resort doesn’t mind backcountry skiers using its snowcat route for backcountry access. A little inbounds to get out of bounds isn’t a problem. If you’re looking for slackcountry access, the Supreme lift will deliver you to the goods. On snow days, when the resort skiers are doing their thing it’s the perfect time to check out backcountry options.

An excellent starting point is Grizzly Gulch, which only requires a short skin and delivers quickly on skiable pow – great backcountry skiing for beginners . Catherine’s Pass (via Grizzly Gulch) is reachable by skinning or lift and offers fantastic bowl skiing with further access to the trio of Sunset Peak, Mount Tuscarora, and Pioneer Peak – all of which offer chutes, couloirs, bowls and trees of their own. Another option for the area is Flagstaff Mountain and Upper Days Fork, which can be tracked out fairly quickly, but is still worth getting up early to hit skiable chutes, bowls and trees. All of these options and more are attainable with skins. No resort pass required. Not bad.

Alta backcountry skiing

Snowbird backcountry skiing

Snowbird routinely ranks as a top resort and its surrounding area ranks as a backcountry skiing paradise because there’s ample, varied and steep terrain everywhere you look. While there’s plenty for families to do here while on vacation, the advanced and expert skiers here will have plenty of hard slopes to carve and shred, some of which are as gravity-defying as the backcountry skiing in Washington . It’s not on everybody’s bucket list only because of its name.

Slackcountry access to White Pine Fork happens via a Snowbird backcountry gate, from where you can take a short hike to the west to Temptation Ridge and shred the Temptation Chutes, or traverse up the ridgeline and head for Birthday Chutes and Tri Chutes. In upper White Pine, there’s the spectacular Glacier Bowl and the West Pass. This area is also accessible via the White Pine Trailhead if you’re not based out of the resort. And if you feel like springing for it, there’s heli-skiing if you want that hard-to-reach pow.

Can you ski between Alta and Snowbird?

Yes, you can ski between Alta and Snowbird. The side-by-side resorts offer connected terrain, (with a new combined pass). The two mountains share a two-mile-long ridgeline that stretches from the top of Sugarloaf Pass, through to Baldy Shoulder, and then down to the bypass road. The double-resort pass offers skiers of every level a chance to experience all of the inbounds terrain that the whole area has to offer.

If you want to take full advantage of the area and head off-resort, Snowbird and Alta backcountry guides that offer day, weekend and week-long packages for all objectives. From beginner backcountry touring clinics for the whole family to expert-only choose your own adventure trips, there’s no shortage of fun to be had here. If you’re looking for an Alta and Snowbird backcountry trail map, you won’t find a better one than the Wasatch backcountry ski map mentioned above.

4. Mill D North Fork

There are few touring areas that provide as varied terrain as Mill D. Long known for its easy access aspen glade skiing, Mill D has a bit of everything, including plenty of advanced options. The drainage there also acts as a relatively safe harbor when avalanche hazard is elevated. It should be noted that there are plenty of approaches to diverse terrain regardless of hazard conditions. Mill D is a great stomping ground for new users but it also draws experienced folks due to its diversity and the forgiving nature of its terrain.

5. Solitude

The name says it all. Long considered a local’s locale, Solitude is far less crowded than its neighbors and offers plenty of Utah’s famous powder. Simply put, it’s a gem of a ski vacation destination where there’s plenty of skiable lines available after it’s more famous neighbors get tracked out. There’s a lot of family options and the resort itself has done much to bolster its standing amongst its other more frequented neighbors.

The best Solitude Mountain runs

The resort offers sidecountry access to challenging terrain in Honeycomb Canyon, where skiers can discover chutes and wide-open powderfields in Wolverine Cirque. For even more of an adrenaline rush, there’s Fantasy Ridge which requires a hike over very exposed terrain that leads to narrow shoots and other technical delights — all of which is just a short trek from the resort. You can also skip the resort, too, and find access to Silver Fork Canyon and Honeycomb by parking at the lower Solitude lot and skinning/bootpacking up to Silver Fork for runs like Silver Spoon, Meadow Chutes and Brad’s Line. Also attainable from the Solitude lot is USA Bowl, which has good tree skiing, with other options further beyond, like South Monitor and Scott Hill.

6. Brighton

As the first ski resort in Utah, Brighton has something for everybody: there’s family-friendly trails, lots of night skiing and amazing slackcountry and backcountry terrain. It’s also a world-famous destination for snowboarders, too, so if you’ve got one in your group (or your family), there’ll be something for everyone. What makes Brighton so special is it is a perfect place for regular resort skiers to get a taste of the backcountry.

Hidden Canyon, Mt. Millicent and the Wolverine Cirque

Just off of the Great Western Lift is Hidden Canyon which offers some of the easiest backcountry access you’ll find, and runs lasting for days after a storm. On the other side, the lines off of Mt. Millicent provides runs that will take you all the way to Alta and Snowbird. And just beyond Millicent is the Wolverine Cirque, with insanely steep chutes.

7. Park City

Park City might be famous for hosting some of the best mountain biking in Utah , but not many know that the Park City Mountain Resort is also the largest ski area in the United States. This means that there’s tons of paths and activities to choose from, whether you’re an adventure seeker, luxury traveler or going on a family vacation. If you’re looking to ski off-resort all together, there are plenty of Park City backcountry ski tours available, with guides who can introduce you to the best — and least crowded — places, with access as easy as the backcountry skiing in Jackson Hole .

The Park City Ridgeline

More important, though, are the backcountry runs available both within and without the resort, collectively known as the Park City Ridgeline. While you can get to the ridgeline directly from the resort, the terrain and its bowls and treelines are attainable from outside the resort, mostly on the Solitude and Brighton side of Big Cottonwood Canyon. Regardless, if you’re not too proud to take PCMR’s giant lift, the 9990, explore the southern half of the ridgeline and ski the classic Monitor Bowls or No Name bowl, all of which offer steep and sustained runs. They’re also huge. On the northside of the Ridgeline consider Dutchess Draw and McDonald’s Draw each with big, each skiable and mega on powder days.

8. La Sal Mountains

The Wasatch Mountain Range might come to mind for most when they think of the best backcountry ski spots in Utah, but there’s another truly great location, definitely off the beaten path, that bears mentioning as a serious destination for any backcountry skier: La Sal Mountains, just outside of Moab! While the majority of people only know of the best mountain bike trails in Moab , locals who are more familiar with the area are taking advantage of its 12+ 12,000’ mountains for backcountry skiing objectives.

Backcountry runs for all skill levels in Moab

Whether you want to find powder stashes in the Corkscrew Glades or shred the vertical on Mount Tukuhnikivatz (Mount Tuk, as it’s affectionately known to locals), the access for most lines and runs is straightforward thanks to Moab being a solid spring and summer recreation destination. There’s paths everywhere and lots of trailhead options.

One of the easier runs is Haystack Mountain, which, with its south and east-facing aspects, serves up plenty of corn come spring. For the backcountry skier looking for something more challenging, be sure to check out Mount Mellenthin. The summit ascent requires a lot of care and preparation (cliffs! avalanches! beware!), but there are high angle chutes and bowls waiting for you on its north face.

So, while the 3.5hr drive from SLC may not be on the top of everyone’s weekend ski list, those who decide to make the journey will find themselves soon planning out their next trip back. Knock off work early on a Friday, and you’ll log two full weekend days of backcountry skiing before you need to make the drive home.

Two U of U cross country skiers finish 5th and 7th in Tour de Ski

ITALY – Sophia Laukli and Novie McCabe, both students at the University of Utah, saved their best for last, finishing fifth and seventh respectively to post career-best World Cup results in the final stage of the FIS Tour de Ski in Val di Fiemme, Italy, Tuesday. Most of those top-ten spots in the annual multi-day event are historically spoken-for by European athletes.

“It felt pretty good,” McCabe said to US Ski and Snowboard’s Tom Horrocks after finishing the traditional final 3k climb up the Alpe Cermis in Cavalese. “It was tough, obviously, but I’m stoked about it.”

“It was quite a shock,” Laukli said to Horrocks of her fifth-place result. “After yesterday, I was extremely tired, so it was a bit of a 180. I was really looking forward to this race, though, and I knew that this was my style of course, so I was really excited.”

Indeed, the Alpe Cermis certainly fits the style for Laukli and McCabe, with pitches as steep as 28 percent. The course kicked off with a 2.5k loop before heading out onto the famed Marcialongo trail, which provided a brief respite for the athletes before the final climb. Jessie Diggins was fifth coming out of the Marcialongo, with Laukli and McCabe a bit further back in the field of 46 athletes who started the race.

“I was right with Sophia,” McCabe said to Horrocks as they began the climb, “and I knew that she was going to be in a good position, so I tried to follow her.”

“I tried to stay pretty chill and ski it tactfully well,” Laukli said to Horrocks, “and I was able to start the climb with a lot of energy. Like Novie said. We were pretty far back, up until the climb started, so we were well-rested and able to make some moves on the climb.”

Norway’s Heidi Weng won the race, with Sweden’s Ebba Andersson in second and Delphine Claudel of France in third. Russia’s Natalia Nepryaeva was fourth to secure the overall Tour de Ski victory. The overall win also moved her into atop the World Cup overall standings. Jessie Diggins was 15th Tuesday and finished eighth overall.

Sophia Laukli’s First World Cup Podium as Karlsson and Klaebo Win Tour de Ski on the Slopes of the Alpe Cermis

tour de ski uttak

The Alpe Cermis

When the Grand Tour of skiing—the Tour de Ski—was dreamed up by Vegard Ulvang and Jurg Capol in 2006, one of the first definitive decisions was that it would need a Queen Stage: a stage that sought to distill the essence of ski racing—the brutal beauty of the slog—to its purest state. The Tour de France had its Alp d’Huez, and the Tour de Ski would have the Alpe di Cermis.

Through seventeen editions of the Tour de Ski, the climb of Alpe di Cermis has become nothing less than iconic in Nordic Skiing. This is where Therese Johaug and Marit Bjoergen cemented their legends in tandem, year-after-year, battle-after-battle, racing up the fall line. This is where Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo lost the 2020 Tour to Alexander Bolshunov on the final day. Martin Johnsrud Sundby, Petter Northug, Dario Cologna, Jessie Diggins, Heidi Weng: all have played prominent roles in past hill climbs. In 2015, it’s where Liz Stephen notched a 5th place , and kicked off the breakout World Cup season for the American women, culminating in the team’s first ever distance World Championships medals ( That Falun 10 k where Jessie Diggins and Caitlin Gregg were 2nd and 3rd) .

tour de ski uttak

The Alpe is the culmination; it is also the main event. Things were no different for this year’s Tour de Ski. On the women’s side, Frida Karlsson hoped to arrive at the summit in possession of the Yellow Bib. On the men’s side, Klaebo looked to do the same, but with ghosts of Alpe’s past haunting his each and every stride. Both Karlsson and Klaebo had dominated over the course of the first six stages, but both, remarkably, remained vulnerable. Karlsson (2:31:16.0) held an advantage of 1:12 over second place Tiril Udnes Weng, while Klaebo carried a 1:02 advantage over second place Calle Halfvarsson in the men’s field. Simen Hegstad Krueger—winner on the Alpe in 2021—held fifth place overall at 1:45 back. In a normal ski race, those margins would have all but guaranteed victory for the leaders. But in a race up the Alpe de Cermis—where the final kilometers stretch out time gaps with every meter gained—no lead is ever safe.

Laukli Highlights Women’s Race with First Podium

Sophia Laukli spent the past year seeking out the most challenging propositions in endurance sports, and learning to make them her specialty. Last year on the Alpe, she recorded a 5th place finish alongside teammate Novie McCabe in 7th that marked a definitive breakout. Already then, the goal was set. Return to the Alpe in 2023, and seize it. In the interim, she has run and skied her way to the top of climbs around the world, winning the Lysbotn Opp rollerski climb last July ahead of Heidi Weng and Delphine Claudel, who were 1st and 3rd up the Alpe, respectively, last year. Through highs and lows in this Tour, she was able to keep sight of her “big goals for today” as she put it in post-race comments.

When it comes to the unexpected, however, one can only prepare just so much: “Right before the climb started, I got tripped up and lost all the positions I had made up [by working the flat section],” she said. “I was back to being in the back of the pack going into the climb.”

Her experience on the climb told her two things: “Tactically, it’s very difficult to pass people, and [the Alpe] is a long climb.” Laukli held it together. She found her teammates, Jessie Diggins and Rosie Brennan, climbing in 5th and 6th place through the crux of the Alpe. Laukli held her emotions in check, saying she, “[didn’t go] full-on panic mode, and [it] saved me today.” There was poise. There was patience. And there was also a whole lot of power. It appeared impossible that she could climb back to the podium, and yet Sophia Laukli had taken that word and controlled it: it was impossible how well she was skiing.

That fact became most apparent in the final 200 meters of the race. Having begun the day at the back of the pack, Laukli had raced herself into position to stand on the podium for the first time in her World Cup career. None of that would come easy; she crossed the finish line and folded over in the snow. Five minutes later, she stepped onto the podium in third place. The 22 year old Maine native, and current University of Utah skier, became the first of her new generation of American women to achieve that milestone.

tour de ski uttak

In the end, Laukli’s finish was just 35.7 seconds behind French climbing specialist Delphine Claudel. Claudel entered the steepest sections of the climb behind Frida Karlsson, the overall leader . At a hairpin 1.5 k from the finish, a brief tangle between Karlsson and Heidi Weng allowed Claudel to establish a gap, and Weng was the one who followed. But none were able to surpass Claudel at the finish line where the Frenchwoman claimed her first World Cup victory, and her first win on the Alpe di Cermis.

tour de ski uttak

For her part, Laukli seemed to search beyond herself to explain her astounding performance. “I lucked out I guess,” she said. “My tired was less than other people’s tired, and so it was enough.” Laukli’s achievements on the day could have overshadowed what other American women accomplished: one of the team’s best days ever, putting three in the top ten. There was the tenacity of Jessie Diggins, pushing to the front of the race early on in the Alpe climb, working “through disappointments but never losing belief” as she would say after the race. Then through the middle part of the climb, Rosie Brennan had joined Diggins, pushing to improve her Overall 5th place standing on the day. It all came together: “[It felt surprisingly] nice and comfortable,” Brennan said. “Usually [on the Alpe], you are alone and work on just keeping a rhythm, but today is was like ‘now I gotta stay with them.'” The American women had come together for the toughest test in ski racing.

tour de ski uttak

As Laukli pushed for third, Diggins and Brennan stuck together to finish fifth and sixth on the day. Brennan moved up to fourth Overall, her best Tour de Ski overall finish ever. “[The World Cup] has been a hard start for me this year, and I’m starting to come around. [This Tour de Ski] was a good sign for the future.”

With her race today, Jessie Diggins moved up to 11th Overall in this year’s Tour de Ski. Diggins commented that she is “more proud of how I handled this Tour than any other one. I just didn’t stop believing and kept going. Now it’s time to recover, and keep training.”

Diggins did add that she would undertake some post-race evaluation on how she was recovering: “I’m not 100% sure when my next race will be,” she said.

Karlsson won the 17th edition of the Tour de Ski with a 15th place finish on the Alpe, remaining 33 seconds ahead of Niskanen and Tiril Udnes Weng. The finish culminated a week in which Karlsson continuously bolstered her reputation as the dominant distance skier in the women’s field. Karlsson’s win also marks another milestone for the current generation of Swedish women skiers, delivering the first Overall Tour de Ski win since Charlotte Kalla won in 2008.

Krueger Wins Day, Klaebo Wins Tour in Men’s Race

tour de ski uttak

Part of the emerging legend of the Alpe Cermis is that it has been the only arena capable of diminishing the otherwise-unstoppable force of Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo. Klaebo entered the day having won all six of this year’s Tour de Ski previous stages, another of the many accomplishments that only he can claim in the sport of skiing. Even so, there was almost no speculation that Klaebo would make this year’s Tour a clean sweep with a win on the Alpe di Cermis. The Alpe has made appear Klaebo human before; it would most likely do so again.

The lingering question was whether he could avoid a repeat of 2020 when Alexander Boshunov and Sergey Ustigov successfully wrested the yellow bib from Klaebo on the climb. With previous Alpe di Cermis winner, Simen Hegstad Krueger, in fifth place—1:45 behind Klaebo—there was still a possibility that the climb could prove to be Klaebo’s undoing yet again.

That possibility turned into real tension when Krueger initiated a move at the base of the climb, opening a gap in the field. A group of Norwegian men quickly formed, but without Klaebo. Sjur Roethe, Hans Christer Holund, and Didrik Toenseth moved up with Krueger. Klaebo was still within reach, but his lack of push to stay with the field indicated a concession from him; he would let the climbers go and focus on keeping the yellow bib on his back at the finish.

Krueger set a blistering pace up the steepest sections of the climb, dropping both Toenseth and Roethe (last year’s Alpe winner). Hans Christer Holund was the only one up to the task of marking Krueger, with Krueger doing the bulk of the work as he searched for seconds on Klaebo. Between the 8 k and 9 k mark, Krueger trimmed 47 seconds from his 1:45 gap to Klaebo. The math was evident: it would be hard, but not impossible, for Krueger to win the Tour. The aggressive push from Krueger meant that some of those who had tried to keep with him didn’t just lose touch with the pack when they went, but really fell off. That allowed skiers who had been more conservative through the early section to challenge for the final podium spot, including Frenchman Jules Lapierre and German Friedrich Moch. Klaebo kept to himself through their machinations, and Lapierre soon had established a gap over the other challengers.

In the end, Krueger crossed the finish line only five seconds ahead of Hans Christer Holund to win the Alpe for a second time. The Frenchman Lapierre crossed with the most emphatic celebration on the day: his first World Cup podium. Krueger’s celebration was perhaps a bit subdued: he had looked back to find that Klaebo had put in a remarkable second effort over the final kilometer. The Alpe, it turned out, did manage to expose Klaebo’s humanity, but the struggle also revealed his character. A skier who appears so often to win by virtue of talent and tactics earned a special victory today by racing with his heart.

tour de ski uttak

Part of the Alpe’s legend is in posing a challenges to skiers, but it also appears that the Alpe di Cermis has a sense of justice. Klaebo has clearly been the best skier in this Tour de Ski; with his third Overall victory, he moves a step closer to becoming its most successful skier of all time. That he has not already notched that title speaks to both his youth (we often forget how young Klaebo is), and to the prowess of the skier he chases: Dario Cologna, who during his career earned four Tour de Ski titles.

Behind the Norwegian battle at the top of the Alpe Cermis, the American men were busy continuing their steady climb toward the top of the World Cup. Scott Patterson was the top finisher for the Americans, finishing 14th in his second climb of the Alpe (he was 38th last year). Patterson said in post-race comments that the result marked a high point for him at this Tour de Ski, and that he is, “looking forward to the focus on the longer races later in the season,” including the 50 k in Holmenkollen.

Ben Ogden was the top American finisher in the Overall Tour de Ski standings, finishing 13th after a 24th place finish in his first climb of Alpe di Cermis.

Conclusion to the 17th Tour de Ski

With that, the 17th edition of the Tour de Ski comes to a close. World Cup Skiing departs the slopes of  Alpe di Cermis, leaving more stories etched in the snow on each steep hairpin. It reminds us once again of all that makes ski racing beautiful when the time is right, when the skiers are prepped, and when and all of our eyes watching.

The World Cup takes a collective rest for the next two weeks, before resuming in Livigno, Italy on January 21st. From all of us at FasterSkier, thanks for following along for another edition of the Tour de Ski!

tour de ski uttak

On a historic day for the Stifel U.S. Cross Country Ski Team at the final stage of the Tour de Ski, Jessie Diggins clinched her second overall Tour de Ski victory and Sophia Laukli won her first ever World Cup on the famed Alpe Cermis hill climb and is now the youngest American to ever win a cross country individual World Cup.

After six stages of races, the athletes were drained, but the last six athletes on the Stifel U.S. Ski Team left in the stage race lined up on the start line to finish out the 2023-24 Tour de Ski. The final stage was a mass start, where all the athletes left in the tour are off the line at once. Off the start line, everyone took a lap around the previous day's 2.5k course, then on a windy path to the start of the infamous climb, which concludes with 4 kilometers straight up an alpine ski mountain. The hill has an average gradient of nearly 12% and peaks with a gradient of 28%.

Diggins led the overall by 43 seconds after the last stage in Val di Fiemme, Italy, and attacked, but two-time Tour de Ski winner Heidi Weng of Norway threatened and pushed the pace. Diggins used everything she had to maintain her overall lead and cross the finish line in sixth, winning the overall by 31.6 seconds. Weng was second in the overall while Kertuu Niskanen of Finland finished third.

But it was Laukli who had the glory of the World Cup stage win. Even with a fall, she powered past her competitors to win easily—barely looking winded as she crossed the finish line. Laukli, this summer’s winner of the overall Golden Trail World Series trail running series, excels at hill climbs and had her first podium in 2023 at the same venue. It is the first time an American has won the Final Climb.

“I don’t think I’ve let it fully sink in,” said Laukli. “It feels insanely good. It’s super fun to have my first victory, but also have one of the best races of my life—feelings-wise and tactics-wise. Obviously I’ve had the most success in this race, but it’s just really motivating for the rest of the season and future seasons—and in more than just the hill climb. I don’t think I could be more motivated for skiing in general.”

Behind Laukli, Weng was second and Delphine Claudel of France third. On the Stifel U.S. Ski Team, Rosie Brennan was 12th in the climb and Sammy Smith was 23rd. Brennan also finished 12th in the overall standings, while Laukli was 14th and Smith 26th.

On the men’s side, Zanden McMullen was 36th in the hill climb and Scott Patterson was 42nd.

Jules Lapierre of France won the stage, with Friedrich Moch of Germany second and Hugo Lapalus of France third. Harald Oestberg Amundsen of Norway won the overall Tour de Ski with Friedrich Moch of Germany in second and Lapalus in third.

The FIS Cross-Country family is looking forward to a season’s highlight with the FIS Tour de Ski performed by Le Gruyère from 28th December 2021 to 4th January 2022. The 16th edition of the prestigious competition row starts off in Lenzerheide (SUI), moves on to Oberstdorf (GER) and closes up traditionally in Val di Fiemme (ITA) with the famous Final Climb to Alpe Cermis.

With six competition days, this season’s Tour de Ski schedule was shortened due to the preparation phase for the upcoming Olympic Winter Games that will take place in February 2022. The event schedule however covers Olympic formats on the second race day (29th December) with a 10km/15km Interval start in Free technique in Lenzerheide as well as the Sprint in Classic technique on the fourth race day (1st January) in Oberstdorf.

With the according schedule, elite athletes are expected to participate at the Tour in preparation for the Games. As the selection process is still going on, teams are about to announce their line-up in the upcoming days.

Cross-country Tour de Ski 2023/24: preview, full schedule, how to watch live

Norway's Johannes Klæbo is defending his Tour de Ski crown in the cross-country skiing event, with Jessie Diggins of USA going in as the favourite to land the women's title she last won in 2021.

Johannes Klaebo of Norway competes at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships Planica, Slovenia.

The 2023/24 Tour de Ski in cross-country skiing gets underway with a sprint race in Toblach, Italy on Saturday, 30 December.

Can anyone stop reigning men's champion Johannes Klæbo from securing a third-consecutive crown?

Frida Karlsson is the reigning champion on the women's side, but the question is whether she will even start to defend her title. The star has struggled to find her best form since contracting COVID after the cross-country skiing opening event in Ruka, and 2021 champion Jessie Diggins is currently leading the overall season rankings.

The Tour de Ski, which is part of the FIS Cross-Country World Cup, will see skiers compete in seven stages, moving from Toblach to Davos, Switzerland, before the finale on the famously steep and gruelling mass start in Val di Fiemme, Italy.

Read on to find out all you need to know about the 2023/24 edition of the event, including the full schedule and top skiers to watch.

2023/24 Tour de Ski: Stars to watch

On the men’s side, Johannes Klæbo is the Tour de Ski favourite. He picked up where he left off last season and currently leads the World Cup overall rankings.

In fact, the reigning Olympic champion from Norway has won four races this year, which is 50 per cent of the season so far.

His compatriot, Harald Oestberg Amundsen is also having a good season and currently sits second in the overall standings after dominating the distance events.

Elsewhere, keep an eye out for another Norwegian, Paal Golberg , who won the 10km freestyle in Ostersund and is expected to be a medal threat.

On the women’s side, USA’s Jessie Diggins has taken full advantage of Frida Karlsson ’s fitness struggles to take the lead in this year’s overall rankings.

As a previous Tour de Ski winner, Diggins goes into the event as the favourite. However, she’ll have to be at her best to beat Sweden’s Ebba Andersson , who has won multiple times this season and currently edges Diggins in the distance events, as well as Emma Ribom , who currently tops the sprint charts.

Jessie Diggins: "I'm really good at suffering for a long time"

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
