San Diego is a beer lovers' paradise! To get a real feel for the California beer culture, join one of these San Diego brewery tours! 3 beer glasses in the front with beer kegs in the background - Text overlay: Best Brewery Tours in San Diego

When you think of San Diego , you probably think of white sand beaches and bright blue skies, but the city has so much more to offer, including its fantastic breweries. With over 150 breweries, it’s home to more breweries than anywhere else in California. It’s no wonder San Diego is classified as a beer enthusiast’s paradise.

My husband Greg and I love beer. We have been brewing beer at home for many years. We also love checking out new breweries as well as hanging out at our local favorites here in San Diego. Over the years, we have done a few brewery tours in San Diego as well. We love that we don’t have to worry about a designated driver and how easy it is to organize. We have wasted precious time trying to decide which breweries to go to, in which order, and guestimating how much an Uber or Lift is going to cost etc. With a tour, you just hop on the bus and enjoy and you know exactly how much it will cost before you go.

The Best San Diego Brewery Tours

North park beerucation tour.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 53 Star Reviews “Such a fun experience! The tour is thorough and delicious. Would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking to have a locals experience of North Park breweries.”

The San Diego neighborhood of North Park is referred to as a mecca for lovers of one or two brews. North Park was once a district filled with dirty old street cars, but it has received much rejuvenation over the years. The introduction of ample hipsters looking to leave their footprint on the area has resulted in a huge increase in breweries popping up. Nobody’s complaining.

Embark on a beer-tasting experience like no other! Try different craft brews at three to four award-winning breweries, all of which are known for their version of the good stuff. A local beer expert will be by your side at all times. The guide will provide a wide range of knowledge and supply delicious snacks that complement each drink. Nothing goes better with a pint than a tasty bite to eat.

One thing you can’t complain about on this beer tour in San Diego is that all beverages and snacks are included. Drink up, folks, this is definitely one of the best brewery tours in San Diego!

The North Park Beerucation Tour lasts approximately three hours. Don’t be afraid to ask your guide any questions, they know everything there is to know about San Diego beer. It’s not just all about drinking, you know.

Unfortunately, there’s no pick-up included with this tour. Although, fortunately, there’s a central meeting point that suits all parties at University Avenue.

Small Group Brewery Hopping Tour

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 39 Star Reviews “Best time ever celebrated my daughters bday with family. Mike was awesome. We are locals but our city has a lot to offer so gota take advantage of site seeing what we forget is here. Thx Mike”

Learn about San Diego’s craft brew scene by signing up for this small group brewery tour of San Diego. You’ll be taken to three unique, local breweries to learn about the work that goes into making their special product. To make things even better, one flight of beer samples at each bar will be included in your reservation. Yes, you heard that correctly.

The four-hour San Diego beer tour has space for up to ten people. If you have a decent number of people looking to learn all about craft breweries, this is the one for you.

You’ll be picked up by an enthusiastic driver/tour guide who knows a thing or two about beer. Their vehicle isn’t just any vehicle, it’s an open-air motor. Therefore, expect the fresh sea breeze to hit your face when driving down the coast. Fresh bottled water will be provided during your journey, but who wants that when there’s booze waiting ahead?

Usually, the time spent at each brewery varies. During this beer tour of San Diego you’ll spend roughly an hour in the first spot, 45 minutes in the second, and finish off in the final spot with the remaining time. There’s a huge possibility you’ll forget what time it is by then.

By choosing this tour, there’s a possibility you could end up at some of the best breweries in San Diego. Mike Hess, Belching Beaver, Fall Brewing, Rip Current Brewing, Modern Times, Thorn St Brewery, Half Door Brewery, and Ballast Point are among the options.

Pickup from various hotels in San Diego is available upon request. Alternatively, the meeting point is in front of the Whiskey Girl bar, an easy location that everyone can get to.

Cruise And Booze Through North Coast’s Craft Breweries

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Star Reviews “WOW! What a fun day! Seriously, I cannot stress this enough… WHAT A FUN DAY!”

Take off on a drinking journey to see North County’s most exciting craft breweries. Enjoy a half-day San Diego brewery tour in a vintage VW Vanagon and visit three noteworthy craft establishments.

Your brewery tour in San Diego will either begin at one of the agreed-upon meeting points or if your hotel is on the pickup list, you’re in luck. The first stop will be Wild Barrel Brewing. Here your guide will take you on a tour of the vicinity and there will be time to order some beers at the site’s bar. It’s going to be hard to get you guys out of there.

Next up is Wildbrew Vista. Allow your guide to take you to the cold room and catch a glimpse of the equipment used to maintain quality. It’s an eye-opening experience that gives you a good idea of the work that goes into keeping the product at the proper temperature at all times.

Finally, visit the award-winning Jacked Up Brewery owned by a lovely guy named Michale. Explore the facility while listening to his favorite music, and finish things up with a flight of beers produced by Michale’s brewery on the tour operator. Beers to that, folks!

Some alcohol, snacks, and water are included with your booking. Although at the breweries, you’ll have to do beer tastings at your own expense. Please note that at the first two places you stop, you’ll have to pay for an admission fee ticket.

This private San Diego brewery tour lasts for four and a half hours. Once finished, you’ll be dropped back at the meeting point, where you can continue drinking beer.

All-Inclusive Brewery Tour In A Fire Truck

This brewery tour can be fully customized to your needs and is a fun choice whether you’re having a bachelor party or looking to organize a corporate team-building day out. You choose a time and what breweries you’d like to visit, and the company does all of the work.

Hotel pick-up is available from various properties in San Diego. Just be sure to check out the list to make sure yours is on it before booking. Once the company confirms it, you’re good to go. On the day of the excursion, your guide will arrive in a flashy red fire truck with some welcome beers and bottled water to kick things off the right way.

If you haven’t got much knowledge about breweries in San Diego, the tour company will provide you with a couple of itineraries, and you can decide which ones you’d like to go to out of the suggestions.

There’s an exciting route on their tour description, which includes a visit to Mission Brewery, which was once a Wonderbread Factory. Then you’ll head on to the Belching Beaver North Park, famed for its peanut butter stout, before finishing up for a round of beers at Thorn Street Brewery.

All alcoholic beverages are included in the price. If you have somebody in your group under the age of 21, they can still come along but won’t be able to consume any alcohol.

Beer Tasting And Brewery Tour In San Diego By Motorcycle Sidecar

Dive deep into San Diego’s beer scene by joining this two-and-a-half-hour brewery tour by motorcycle sidecar. Zoom through the city streets between three breweries accompanied by an experienced driver who knows the city streets like nobody else. Start at Stone Brewing Tap Room – Kettner, where the brewery’s host will look after you.

Learn about its interesting background history and enjoy a flight of beers poured right in front of you. Afterward, your driver will escort you to Ballast Point Brewing in Little Italy, known for their massive selection of local beers. Of course, you’ll get to try some out for yourselves. Finally, you’ll end up at the Coronado Brewing Company San Diego Tasting Room to chat with some of the company’s brewers over some of their beer. Feel free to ask them all the questions you have about the industry.

The private tour departs from out the front of Legacy Resort Hotel & Spa. Your driver will be parked there waiting for you. All transport and beers are included in the price, so the only other expense you could have is if you want to grab some food at one of the breweries.

It’s possible to tailor the itinerary in whatever way you like. You can contact the company for more information.

San Diego Craft Beer Walking Tour Itinerary

Hops in a hopping neighborhood.

With so many breweries producing such a wealth of different beers, it can help to focus your plans around a geographic region or even by the types of beers you want to experience.

A Hop-Lover's Downtown Tour

If there's one beer style that could be considered quintessentially San Diego, it's our India Pale Ales (or IPAs). And when it comes to IPAs, San Diego brewers do not skimp on the hops! Here’s a roadmap for exploring  Downtown San Diego  brews and the local IPA bonanza.

First Stop: Karl Strauss

Where: 1157 Columbia Street

There are usually about 10 selections on tap here, which regularly include Pintail Pale Ale and Tower 10 IPA, both of which deliver plenty of hoppy goodness in a medium-bodied package that pairs well with food. If one of Brewmaster Paul Segura's special beers is available—such as Tower 20 Double IPA or Big Barrel Double IPA—don't pass them up.

Second Stop: Mission Brewery

Where: 1441 L Street - walking time from Karl Strauss: about 20 minutes

Here, you can check out a few of Brewmaster John Egan's hoppy brews, including El Conquistador Extra Pale Ale, which delivers an impressive amount of hops in a very sessionable beer (in other words, it's easy to drink!). Moving up in intensity is Mission IPA and then Shipwrecked Double IPA, which is among the brewery's most popular and best-selling beers.

Third stop: Monkey Paw Brewery and Pub

Where: 805 16th Street - walking time from Mission: about 15 minutes)

Here, you'll not only find a great selection of excellent Monkey Paw brews, you'll also have one of San Diego's best tap lists at your fingertips. Chances are a number of fantastic pale ales and IPAs from all over San Diego will be available, but don't pass up a chance to taste some of Monkey Paw's own. Hooked on Chinook (a single hop IPA) and Bonobos (a San Diego Pale Ale that delivers tons of citrus, honey, and floral hoppiness) are both delicious. And, what's more, you'll be drinking at a gold-medal winning brewery: Bonobos won gold at this year's GABF (Great American Beer Festival) in a crowded field of 120 entries.

Optional Stop 4: Coronado Brewing Company

Where:  170 Orange Avenue, Coronado, CA 92118

If you really wanted to add an extra dimension to your downtown hop tour, you could walk to the ferry at Seaport Village (just a 15 minute walk from Karl Strauss) and float on over to Coronado, where you'll find Coronado Brewing Company. There, you can sip three or four delicious elixirs, including Frog's Breath IPA, Islander IPA, or Idiot IPA. And, when available, Belgian IPA Hoppy Daze is always a favorite.

This was my first experience w/ Scavengers Beer & Adventure Tour. First off, they were kind enough to take us on a North County Beer Safari even though there were only four of us. Perhaps it was our lucky day, but it doesn't seem like they do this normally so don't bank on it. That said, we were happy to get in the six-wheeled Pinzgauer and roll to the first stop. Our tour guide, Jevon, was super knowledgeable about everything beer and the local area in general. Super cool dude, fun vibe, perfect to lead the tour. Rolling out of Carlsbad and up to Oceanside while enjoying the beautiful weather and ocean breeze was amazing. We left our 3 stops up to Jevon and and he helped us settle on our lunch. Each stop had a unique character and ambience but all were awesome. We went to Northern Pine, Shootz and Stone Brewing. The fish tacos and fish wings at Shootz were delicious. Overall, everything we sampled was really good and we had a great day! I would totally recommend going, you won't regret it! Cheers!

What a cool tour they put on. Kyle was great, very nice and informative of the different locations and history. Really enjoyed it. Being from SD and being around the beer industry i can say they do a great job with this tour. The truck/van is pretty cool too!! Highly Recommended!

Super fun it was worth it ! I definitely recommend this tour if your ever in San Diego.

The best route and tour guide you can ask for! Very good would recommend! I love beer!!

Awesome! Had family from out of town and wanted to explore San Diego breweries. After looking at all options I settled on this one because of the vehicle type. Adam was an awesome guide around the city! Very aware of what we would like and hit on all aspects! We had 2 members of our group that aren't big beer drinkers and they had a blast! They found beer they liked at every stop and the ride alone was well worth the money spent. Can't say enough great things about our experience but 5 Stars and definitely recommend to anyone looking for a tour! Already planning the tequila tour that is offered!

Photo of Lauren C.

Jevon made this experience absolutely incredible. From explaining the history of the vehicle, to catering to food allergies and making sure everyone in the group was taken care of. Would recommend this to anyone! Thanks again Jevon!

Photo of Justin P.

We had a group of four for the Tacos and Tequila tour for Scavengers and it was amazing. Our tour guide Jevon was absolutely amazing and very knowledgeable of all the kinds of tequila we tried (he also gives a generous pour haha). We had amazing tacos in downtown San Diego and also close to old town. In addition to the great food, we tasted various tequilas at scenic locations around San Diego to enjoy it! If you decide to do this tour, I recommend asking for Jevon our tour guide. Probably the coolest and chillest tour guide around and cares that your having a good time!

One of the best beer tours I've done! Garrison is a phenomenal driver and tour guide. He had a great list of breweries lined up and took care of booking lunch for us. I would definitely do this tour again and try the tequila tasting. Strongly recommend for anyone that loves beer. Thank you Garrison for taking care of us and making my friend's bachelor party a great experience!

Photo of Alberto G.

What a great experience. I can't remember the last time I had so much fun. Riding around in the vehicle was great, and our driver, Garrison, was great, and was absolutely amazing the whole time. I would definitely recommend this experience for any celebration you have coming up.

I've never been on a beer tour so I did my research to make sure we would have a good time on our little mini vacay to SD. I am glad I picked this tour! I yelped a number of tours and this one stood out. I'm also glad we got Zach, he really came through. He was knowledgeable about the beers, funny and really down to earth. He played good music, joked around and kept our group upbeat and communicating. We had a group of 6 of us so it played out well where we had leg room and a chance to get to know the other people on board. Heck, we even kept the beer flow going when we were dropped off which just happen to be in front of Stone Brewing Co. Back to the tour. We went to two breweries, Ballast Point and Bay City. I'll be honest, I was hesitant when I found out we were going to Ballast Point as most the beers I had at the Long Beach location were dark or strong as hell. Zach asked us our typical beer choices before the tour started which was really cool cause he recommended beers to each of us based on our preference. All his recommendations were on point! Also, Ballast Point has a ton of great beers offered at this location. Definitely going back. Our second stop was Bay City. Another great spot for great beers. Zach took off to get the bbq from Phil's and brought it back so we could eat there. Great bbq but what really stood out was them onion rings. So freaking good. I thought that was really cool that Zach did that cause I kept wondering when I booked the tour how we would have time to visit two breweries and still have time to eat. Zach made it happen. So the setup is we meet up at the site given and head out in this safari truck that seats about 12 people. Pretty cool in my opinion. As we got to each brewery, we would each get 4 tickets a piece which would be redeemed at the bar for your sample of beer. And yes, the samples are enough. You will definitely get buzzed if not drunk by the end of the 3 hours if you actually end up using all the tickets. In our case, we did. We love beer. I am definitely going to recommend this tour and plan on going again if I'm ever in town. Zach made it knowledgeable, entertaining and exciting. I'm so glad I booked through Scavengers Beer and Adventure Tour!

San Diego County Wineries Are the Star on our Winery Train Tour

On this tour, we pop the cork on one of San Diego’s best-kept secrets…the gorgeous urban wineries nestled in the villages that hug the California coastline. As a visitor to San Diego, you probably wouldn’t know about these hidden gems unless you had a special map and an experienced guide to show you around the nooks and crannies of San Diego’s neighborhoods.

San Diego’s urban wineries typically don’t have grapevines growing on site, but the wine is produced there with grapes that are brought in from vineyards around the county and state from farms that focus on growing grapes and not necessarily winemaking. In this way, our urban winery winemakers can choose their favorite grapes to experiment with new and interesting varietals… as well as produce excellent traditional wines.

Some of our favorite experiences on this tour include:

  • Tasting an award winning Cab Franc from an urban winery that has produced dozens of winners in a surfer’s paradise on the San Diego coast.
  • Sampling a spicy habanero white wine from a local winery that hand crafts its wines in small batches, using grapes sourced from local vineyards and renowned viticulture regions throughout California. If a habanero white wine sounds weird to you… just wait until you taste it. You’ll never look at peppers the same way again…it’s absolutely delicious! (And we’re wine snobs, you can trust us.)
  • Meeting the wine makers at a quaint small village winery that have dedicated their life to making the perfect California red . They often come out into the tasting room to meet our guests and talk about their wines and winemaking process.

Of Course There’s Food, Too!

What’s a delicious taste of wine without an exquisite taste of food to pair perfectly with it?  On this tour, we stop at one of our favorite San Diego bistros to enjoy a wine tasting and a light Italian lunch. The wines served during lunch are meant to be savored with the delicious food that the chef prepares for us. You’ll also enjoy a cheese or charcuterie board and chocolate.. you’ll feel totally spoiled, believe us.

Pro tip! Ask your tour guide to recommend a great dinner spot to visit after the tour finishes. Our tour guides know all the nooks and crannies of San Diego, and can make recommendations based on your preferences.

Our Wonderful Guests Have Made This a World-Famous Tour

Imagine our delight when The Travel Channel rated this Winery Train Tour the BEST winery train tour in the world!? It’s because of the thousands of 5-star reviews from our guests. Here are a few of our favorites:

Shani said, “The train tour was awesome! Great people (Shira and Paul – our guides – and our fellow tourists) made the experience even more memorable. I rarely drink, even wine, and wasn’t sure what to expect from this tour, but I had a great time. The wineries and wines themselves were very good, especially for a relative “newbie” like myself. Some wineries were crowded, making it hard to hear our guides, but I didn’t find that to be a big problem (they were public establishments, after all).

I also enjoyed using public transportation to get around the city – the MTS trolley and Coaster train were clean and pleasant to ride. I also enjoyed the opportunity to walk the city a bit and ask our guides questions.

Finally, we had an excellent light lunch in the middle of the tour at a restaurant in Old Town. The food was great (yay for a vegan option), and energized us for the rest of the tour. Speaking of Old Town, I appreciated Paul’s recommendation on other restaurants to try in the area. Definitely recommend that area for great food!

Overall, I highly recommend this tour. It was such a fun, laid back experience, and a great way to see more of San Diego.”

Chelle said, “Absolutely not to be missed!! Marti was our guide and took us through a fun, entertaining and educational day with great wine and food and terrific company. This tour was the highlight of our San Diego visit!”

Karen reviewed us on our Facebook page , “My husband and in laws did the wine tour with Marti, it was excellent. She was very personable, knowledgeable and fun to be around. All the places we visited were very welcoming, good selections of wine, beer, Fresco for lunch was wonderful and Carruth did a great charcuterie board. Would definitely recommend this experience.”

San Diego’s O’Brien’s Pub named the No. 1 beer bar in America

O'Brien's Pub co-owners Tyson Blake, left, and Tom Nickel hold bottles of beer in their bar.

USA Today’s annual 10Best competition was decided by a public vote on 20 nominees chosen by a panel of national beer writers

O’Brien’s Pub in Kearny Mesa, long recognized as one of San Diego’s oldest craft beer bars, was named the No. 1 beer bar in America on Friday in a USA Today 10Best poll.

Founded in 1994 and specializing in serving both Belgian and rare beers, O’Brien’s is co-owned by Tom Nickel and Tyson Blake. O’Brien’s Pub was ranked No. 4 in last year’s 10Best poll, and Nickel said that he and Blake were both surprised and thrilled to have made it to the top of this year’s list.

“I don’t want to say it was nail-biting, but we were very unsure where we’d end up. Knowing we finished first is such an overwhelmingly nice surprise,” Nickel said. “Some of the other nominees were multi-outlet bars with more square footage and in much bigger cities. So, it’s very humbling that our little pub in our little city was able to pull it off.”

The annual USA Today 10Best award for Best Beer Bar begins each year with a panel of nationally known beer writers selecting 20 finalists from different regions of the country. Panelist Beth Demmon, a beer writer and past president of the San Diego Brewers Guild, nominated O’Brien’s, which was this year’s only nominee from California.

From that list of 20, the public could weigh in with their online votes over a 28-day period that ended Feb. 26. The results of the 10 bars with the most votes were public during the first three weeks of voting, and during that time O’Brien’s rose from eighth to third place. But the final week of voting was a secret until the results were revealed at 9 a.m. Friday.

Asked what makes a great beer bar, Nickel said “serving great beer” is a must. O’Brien’s has 28 craft beers on tap and an additional 60 or so in bottles. The pub is known for serving rare and hard-to-find beers, particularly from Belgium and Northern California’s Russian River Valley, as well as collaboration beers between local breweries.

But the most important factor, Nickel said, is the customers — who not only kept the bar alive with takeout orders and huge tips for the staff during the pandemic but who also voted in large numbers in the USA Today poll.

“There is a true sense of community among the customers,” Nickel said. “They’re friends. They fish together, they golf together, they party together and they have crab boils together. O’Brien’s is like a rec club for adults. It’s a place you can go that’s friendly and laid back but everything is high quality. The fact that the customers are so supportive and so passionate about the place is the real difference.”

O’Brien’s Pub, at 4646 Convoy St., was opened in 1994 by Jim O’Brien, who retired in 2003 and sold the business to Nickel. A Yale University graduate once destined for law school, Nickel discovered his passion for the beer industry while working part time at a home-brewing supply shop during a summer break from college. He went on to work in brewing for Pizza Port, Oggi’s and finally O’Brien’s.

In 2015, Nickel hired Blake to manage O’Brien’s and brought him on as a partner in 2017. Besides O’Brien’s, Nickel co-owns with Blake and his wife the Pub at Lake Cuyamaca in Julian. Nickel is also the owner and brewer for the 11-year-old Nickel Beer Co. in Julian, where he lives.
