Bardolino on Lake Garda

Bardolino sits on the eastern shore of Lake Garda and has beautiful lakefront views, much like any of the other towns on the lake. However, what sets Bardolino apart from the others is its fine winemaking. The Bardolino ‘rosso’ wine is well-known throughout the world, and when you visit you can enrich yourself in the winemaking culture that has existed here for hundreds of years.

Although Bardolino has only been a tourist destination for the past hundred years or so, it was inhabited in Roman times because of its magnificent climate. The large hills that surround the city now are home to hundreds of vineyards. The natural fortification of the hills made it very secure against barbaric invaders. Today, you can see what remains of the southern city gate from Roman times that was rebuilt in the 12th century. Bardolino also features a castle from those times that was rebuilt in the 14th century.

Bardolino Wine

But for most Bardolino visitors, it's the wine and not the architecture that draws them in. Wine lovers are encouraged to visit the Museo del Vino (Museum of Wine). Don't worry if you're not normally a museum person. This attraction isn't so much a museum as it is a detailed tour of how wine is made in the area. During your visit you'll be able to see how vintners take the grapes from the nearby hillsides and transform them into an award-winning beverage.

Bardolino's signature wine is the result of an expert blend of many different grapes. The Covina variety provides the body and the colour of the wine. Molinara grapes create the light and fruity fragrance, while Negrara grapes add to the freshness of the wine. Finally, Rondinella produces the crisp and clean flavour.

Understandably, there are many different wine cellars you can visit during your stay in Bardolino. You can take tours through several different cellars, but if you want the best then head to Cantina Caorsa. The grapes grown here account for two thirds of the wine made in Bardolino.

Bardolino Festivals

As you might expect, a region with such deep ties to wine and winemaking is bound to celebrate it! There are three festivals for you to choose from. In late September you can be a part of the Festa dell'Uva or Wine Festival. In addition to wine tasting there are fireworks, outdoor concerts and lots of food. Yearly attendance for this event is around 4000 people.

Although Festa dell’Uva is certainly the biggest, don't worry if you're visiting Bardolino at a different time of year. During May, you can attend the Chiaretto Wine Festival. In November, the city hosts the Novello Wine Festival.

Bardolino Attractions

Even if you're not visiting during a festival, there's plenty to explore in the streets of Bardolino. The narrow winding streets of the old town centre have lots of opportunities for shopping , eating or just soaking up the atmosphere. Bardolino is unique in that while it is a popular tourist location, most of the shops in the area are still used by Italians as well.

If you want something beyond the regular tourist fare, you've come to the right place. Quality leather goods, fine arts and designer clothing are just some of the surprising things you'll find in this quaint city. Every Thursday morning, you can buy produce directly from the farmers during the weekly farmer's market. It's a great opportunity to get your hands on some authentic yet inexpensive olive oil and other fresh local foods.

Bardolino Restaurants & Nightlife

Don’t worry if you miss the farmer’s market because you'll never be at a loss for new restaurants to try in Bardolino Centro Storico, the city centre. Local produce is the star at the restaurants and cafés of the area. Menus include fresh fish, regional olive oil and, of course, Bardolino wine. Many of the restaurants have lakeside seating where you can enjoy your meal while gazing out across the water. Sunsets over Lake Garda from the shores of Bardolino are truly something to be seen.

Once the sun goes down, the city's nightlife springs into action. Primo Life Club at Via Marconi offers a restaurant, dancing and a separate piano bar. Club Mezzo and Barr La Strambino have bars and live music, plus many of the hotels in Bardolino offer live music and entertainment on a regular basis.

So no matter what time of year you choose to visit, Bardolino offers the traveler the perfect Lake Garda experience.

The city of wine on Lake Garda.

The town of Bardolino is located on the eastern shore of Lake Garda and lies between the towns of Garda to the north and Lazise to the south.

The name Bardolino has Longobard origins and could be translated as "the little place of the Longobards". The castle that defended the town was built towards the end of the 9th century by concession of King Berengario, to protect the inhabitants from invasions and looting.

Over the following centuries, the castle was modified several times until the era of the Scaligeri , lords of Verona, when it took on the definitive form that we can still admire today.

The mild Mediterranean-type climate of Lake Garda is particularly suited to the cultivation of vines and olives , which in this area represent a very important economic and tourist resource.

Bardolino is in fact known not only in Italy, but also in the rest of the world, for its excellent red wine, which has carried the DOC mark since 1968 and Chiaretto , the popular rosé wine.

There are in fact numerous wine cellars in the municipal area, many of which offer guided tours and the possibility of tasting and purchasing their products on site.

The city of Bardolino is therefore a suitable place both to rest and to practice sports, excursions or long walks through enchanting landscapes .

Lovers of food and good cuisine will be delighted to discover the food and wine specialities at the many characteristic restaurants. The high availability of hotels, residences, campsites and other accommodation facilities guarantee that you will find the ideal solution for a perfect holiday in total relaxation.

What to see in Bardolino

Among the beauties of Bardolino is mainly the characteristic old town , with its streets and alleyways leading to the splendid lakeside promenade . This place is coloured every spring with the blossoming of thousands of tulips .

In the harbour area, right in front of the Town Hall, there is an ancient stone table called " la Preonda ". For the people of Bardolino it is certainly a symbol, a place used in the past by fishermen, but also a meeting point for the inhabitants themselves.

Curious fact - According to a local legend, if a person takes a tour around the Preonda, he/she will have good luck in life and will certainly return to Bardolino.

Walking along these streets, the gaze is attracted not only by the warm colours of the houses, but also by the still clearly visible remains of the mediaeval towers , one of which is leaning, by the walls of the ancient castle, and by two splendid passages: Porta San Giovanni , to the north, and Porta Verona to the east.

Among the religious buildings in the historic centre, we would like to mention the ancient Romanesque church of San Severo and the parish church of S.S Nicolò and Severo, overlooking Piazza Matteotti.

Also very important is the presence of several museums dedicated to the typical features of the territory, such as the Wine Museum and the Oil Museum , skilfully set up and where considerable amounts of wine and food products are available for purchase.

You can take independent or guided excursions , suitable for couples, groups of friends and families with children. In fact, we find facilities dedicated to boating and equipped to safely perform all kinds of water sports , tennis courts or bicycle rental services to explore the surrounding area in absolute freedom.

A typical excursion to be made on foot or by bicycle is the one that leads to the ancient Hermitage of San Giorgio . Located in an elevated position above the nearby Rocca , it enjoys an excellent panoramic view of the Gulf of Garda below.

All the faces of Bardolino: what to do and see in this surprising town on Lake Garda.

Silvia turazza.

Lying at the foot of the morainic hills covered with olive trees and vineyards, the city of Bardolino is one of the best known and most popular on Lake Garda , both for its scenic beauty and because every year it is home to many cultural initiatives and events .

Famous for the production of Garda DOP extra virgin olive oil and the red wine that takes its name and rosé, Bardolino is located 30 kilometers from Verona , on the eastern shore of the lake, and its name means “Little place of the Lombards “.

In addition to the splendid walks by the lake, the alleys of the center and the narrow streets full of flowers and shops, this town hides a very ancient history and treasures that you absolutely must discover to learn to really love it.

bardolino

The ancient origins of Bardolino.

Bardolino has very ancient origins testified by prehistoric finds discovered by scholars and researchers. In particular, traces of the pile-dwelling civilization of the lower Lake Garda have been found in the hamlet of Cisano.

The church of San Severo is also a testimony of the town’s antiquity: the foundations of this Romanesque jewel date back to the 9th century. Also inside the church there are a beautiful cycle of 12th-14th century frescoes and an early medieval crypt.

Curiosity: among the numerous finds from the Roman era stands out a singular funerary monument erected by a man to himself while he was still alive. The signs of Scaliger control are still visible today in the turrets and in the remains of fortifications.

What tu see in a day trip in Brdolino

The treasures not to be missed in bardolino..

It is wonderful to walk in the center of Bardolino and admire the typical fishermen’s houses a stone’s throw from the lake shore. These houses were built in a herringbone pattern, one behind the other starting from the first one that stands on the beach. The streets then arose perpendicular to the coast to facilitate the transport of boats safely in front of the house. Not only that, you will find many souvenir shops, clothing and trendy things, interspersed with bars and restaurants set in romantic and suggestive corners.

The castle.

The exact history of this Castle is clouded by the lack of specific documentation. It is thought that towards the end of the 9th century, King Berengar, unable to repel the Hungarians, allowed the construction of fortresses and forts to defend the towns on Lake Garda. With the Scaligeri of Verona, the castle was rebuilt and enlarged to form a single fortress for the whole town, when it assumed the shape still visible today in the tower, in the doors and in the course of the streets. Sturdy walls were erected reinforced by towers, battlements and battlements: surrounded by a moat it communicated, through Porta San Giovanni (or superior) to the north, with Garda, and through Porta Verona (or lower gate) to the southeast. Today only the two access gates and the rectangular tower on the lakefront are visible of the castle.

Church of San Zeno.

In addition to the Church of San Severo (referred to in the paragraph above), the Church of San Zeno also represents the great historical and artistic heritage of Bardolino and is another testimony of the town’s antiquity. It is in fact considered among the most important monuments of Carolingian origin in Italy , with its Latin cross plan and barrel vaults. It is also the custodian of archaic and refined decorations in the side apses.

bardolino

What to do in a day trip in Bardolino.

For groups of friends, families and children..

In the port area, right in front of the Town Hall, there is a colorful train to comfortably visit Bardolino and entertain the little ones.

On the lakefront (towards Garda) you will find a large barrel with a heart-shaped porthole in which to enter to take beautiful souvenir photos of your visit to Bardolino.

At the end of the town, on the lakefront after Parco Carrara Bottagisio, there is a beautiful Ferris wheel . 30 meters high, it is also pet-friendly: a carriage is equipped for the transport of our little four-legged friends.

A splendid historic sailing ship , the San Nicolò , sets sail from the port of Bardolino for tours and excursions crossing the waters of the lake.

In Cisano, a hamlet of Bardolino, there is the Oil Museum . The path unfolds starting from the story of an era in which processing techniques seemed immutable to reach the beginning of the twentieth century, with the turning point offered by technological progress. On display are ancient and unusual tools, in use since the eighteenth century: lever presses, water-powered wheel crushers and other original tools. A special section tells about the cultivation and production of oil through videos and educational panels.

Also in Cisano you will also find the Sisàn Museum , which preserves a detailed classification of the ornithological and fish species of the lower Garda with documented all the traditions related to them.

bardolino - trenino

For sportsmen.

Bardolino is home to two wonderful routes: the Lazise – Bardolino – Garda cycle/pedestrian path and the Way of Bardolino .

The Way of Bardolino is a cycle/pedestrian path between the vineyards of Bardolino and its surroundings, inaugurated in March 2020, about 100 km long in total, surrounded by greenery. It also takes you to know the wineries in the area, which offer tastings. In all, this walk unfolds on 18 paths of different lengths, from a minimum of three kilometers up to a maximum of twenty kilometers, ideal for those who love cycling or long walks. It crosses 6 municipalities: Bardolino, Costermano, Garda, Rivoli Veronese, Affi and Cavaion Veronese.

For lovers of nightlife.

Bardolino, together with Desenzano, is home to many beautiful nightclubs and discos where you can have fun and stay up late. For aperitifs and cocktails we mention Blanka , Mezzo Clubbing ,  Swing Bardolino ,  Lido Mirabello Beach .

bardolino

The main events and manifestations of Bardolino.

Palio del Chiaretto : every year in May this beautiful event is held to experience a unique experience in Bardolino made of color, flavors and entertainment, which well blends all the food and wine and cultural history of the area. At the appointment, on the flowery and colorful lakeside of Riva Cornicello, the wineries of the Bardolino area are present, with their kiosks offering the tasting of Chiaretto wine (Chiaretto DOC, Chiaretto Classico DOC, Chiaretto Spumante DOG). There are also many f ood stands along the lakefront offering typical dishes of the lake tradition that go well with Chiaretto wine. Find out here the dates of the current year.

Grape and Wine Festival : every year between the end of September and October there is the annual stage created to pay homage to the wine that is the symbol of a territory, from the Classic to the Superior and to the Chiaretto, which animates the lakefront and the streets of the historic center of Bardolino with a full calendar of events. The beating heart of the event is Parco Carrara Bottagisio, where local associations offer Bardolino wine for tasting , in a long avenue dedicated to the most famous glass of red on Lake Garda. But the Grape Festival is not just wine: dozens of food stands with local delicacies offer tasting menus to delight guests comfortably seated in the thousands of seats available on the shores of Lake Garda. Furthermore, there is never a shortage of musical events , both at the Carrara Bottagisio Park and at the Port of Bardolino. Find out here the dates of the current year.

Bardolino is also famous for its many churches : walking towards the hills behind Bardolino you will find San Zeno , from the Carolingian period, and San Severo , a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture located at the northern entrance of the city; this church was built in the twelfth century and is known above all for its beautiful frescoes .

Today the old town centre is teeming with bars, restaurants and small shops (that during summer are open until late), where you can taste the typical products of the area : take a walk in complete relaxation through the alleys, discovering the most lively soul of this coastal village.

A few tips for your stay in Bardolino

LOCAL DELICACIES The perfume of oil and Bardolino wine

Bardolino is popular for its tasty varieties of wine and oil .

The Bardolino is a red wine produced in the south-east of Lake Garda and recognized as a PDO certification mark , perfect to accompany meat, pasta but especially tasty cheeses.

You can visit the many wineries in the area and take part in a tasting tour, to better appreciate this local specialty.

Bardolino also hosts several events dedicated to wine: Festa del Chiaretto in May, Festa dell’Uva in October and Festa del Novello in November.

A typical vine row

Lake Garda is also known for its vast production of “ Olio del Garda ” ( Garda Olive Oil ), another typical product recognized by the prestigious certification “PDO”, with a delicate and slightly fruity taste .

Bardolino has dedicated the Olive Oil Museum to Garda oil, located in Cisano.

The museum explains the tradition of oil production in the Garda area and has audio guides in English and Dutch.

Adjacent to the museum is also the outlet, where you can buy Garda oil at affordable prices. If you prefer, many other farms offer tasting tours of this extraordinary oil.

CYCLING IN BARDOLINO Paths in the midst of nature

Lake Garda bike trails

The area of Lake Garda, as well as for its food and wine specialties, is also known for the many bike paths that run along the Benaco (the ancient name of the lake).

Among these, one of the most beautiful is the cycle path that connects Lazise, Bardolino and Garda , for a total of about 13 km.

It is a path surrounded by nature, which winds through the reed beds, perfect for meeting ducks, swans and mallards that populate the lake; along the way you will also find many places to eat for a short break during the walk.

The ideal time to appreciate this route is certainly the sunset , when the water of the lake reflects the last rays of the sun, giving a magical atmosphere and a picture-postcard view !

If you want to make a longer and more demanding tour, take a complete tour of Lake Garda for a total of about 160 km , including cycle paths and roads: in summer you can stop in one of the many beaches with crystal clear water for a regenerating bath.

If you have time, enjoy a suggestive cruise on the lake with the ferries that cross it from Desenzano to Garda !

Lake Garda’s beaches

Lake Garda's beaches

In this small village that overlooks the lake, you could certainly not miss the beaches! Here are the most famous ones:

From south to north, you will first find Cisano Beach (Lido di Cisano) , made up of rocks and grass: this beach is also a beautiful picnic area, and there’s a parking lot nearby.

Heading north, you will then find  Mirabello Beach (Lido Mirabello) , a  private equipped beach , with a large parking lot; the beach is mainly of gravel and rocks and the water is immediately deep, so it is not really suitable for children.

If you are travelling with children , you can opt for the beach of Punta Cornicello , where there are also bars and restaurants: nearby you will find free parking, but also a playground for children. Near Punta Cornicello there is also “Holiday Beach”: this Lido perfect for those looking for fun and nightlife by the lake, with a restaurant open both for lunch and dinner, and often parties or theme nights.

The origins of culture, art and tradition

  • Prehistory and ancient times

The finding of remains of stilt-house settlements beside Lake Garda and the hamlet of Cisano showed that the first villages date back to the Bronze Age.

In 1986 digs in Cisano showed traces of piles within the lake bed. Nowadays there’s no evident trace of their existence but the near museums show important finds such as utensils and crockery.

Those findings allowed scholars to reconstruct the life style of old inhabitants of that age: from hunting to the plants they consumed; a very interesting discovery was the finding of traces of grape seeds belonging to theVitis Silvestris, that testifies to the presence of vines since ancient times.

There have also been findings dating back to Ancient Rome: coins, boundary stones, sculptures and cemetery remains. Although there’s no evidence of the presence of real villages, Ancient Romans might have built houses and funerary structures in the area whose remains were found in some ancient churches. As an example ruins of a Roman necropolis were found near the ancient chiesetta di San Pietro.

The use of wine too dates back to Ancient Rome; the findings of farming settlements and the remains found in numerous areas of the Region testify to it; some of these remains were related to the use of wine in religious rites (situlae and paterae) or to wine conservation and transportation (amphorae).

However the first written sources testifying to the presence of vines in Bardolino arrived during the Early Middle Ages, together with the representations of bunches in some churches of the surroundings.

The origin of the name

The name “Bardolino” has Lombard origins and it means “Lombards’ small place”.

  • The Middle Ages

For a long time Bardolino was the scene of the barbarian invasions like the rest of the Italian territory.

Since 568, after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the region was inhabited by the Lombards who dominated the north of Italy including the Garda area.

At that time the whole Verona shore was gathered into a single municipality whose county seat was Garda.  The village became so important as to give its name to the lake by replacing the old one, that is Benàco.

The Early Middle Ages was also influenced by the strong power of Colombanian monastic movements including the powerful San Colombano abbey of Bobbio. The monks started evangelizing the community and they encouraged the development of the area. Taking advantage of the climate and the land they promoted the vine and olive oil plantation (the latter was also used for liturgical aims).

The Lombards dominated the north of Italy until 774, before being defeated by the Franks guided by Charlemagne.

Between the ninth and the tenth century the region protected itself from the invasions through castles and fortresses; the Bardolino castle was built at the end of the ninth century when king Berengario allowed the inhabitants to built strongholds to protect themselves

In the following centuries the castle went under various modifications and the Scaligeri finally gave the tower, doors and streets their current structures.

In the twelfth century Bardolino was an autonomous municipality run by the vicinia and it had its own statute.

In 1222 a “corporation” was found by gathering some families that were authorized to fish beside the town seaside. Fishing influenced the construction of the built-up area giving it the typical comb-shaped structure.

Houses were built one behind the other starting from the first one that was located on the shore. This structure engendered perpendicular streets allowing to pull the boats in front of the houses.

Comb-shaped structure

As streets were perpendicular to the shore, they allowed to easily transport the boats and to safely place them in front of the houses.

Modern period and Contemporary History

Bardolino followed the destiny of the Scaliger Signoria; later it was ruled by the Visconti dynasty and then it went under the power of the Republic of Venice from 1405 to 1797. During this last period Bardolino became the centre of the venetian navy on the lake; that period was the height of the village’s splendour due to trade development and the birth of magnificent buildings .

After the short Napoleonic period, Bardolino went under the power of the Austrian monarchy together with the whole Kingdom of Lombardy – Venetia.

In 1848 Bardolino rose up against the Austrian troops and it suffered their reprisals: fires, raids and executions lasted until 1866, when the village was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy.

During that period the economy of the region was mainly based on handicraft, fishing and agriculture; this last was characterized by products of excellence such as  olive oil and wine . It should be remembered that just in the nineteenth century the wine production of the region started being referred to as “Bardolino”.

In the twentieth century the Bardolino became even more famous and it started to be known as the Garda “local wine”.

Starting from the 50s tourism modified the old structure of the village and it became its main industry.

The tourist traffic was initially limited, as the only tourists visiting the lake were rich house owners; the first Sunday flows of tourism started during the Fascist Era.

New businesses and ventures rose such as beach clubs, dance halls, swimming competitions and heliotherapy; since then they never stopped and they were at the height of their success during the 60s and 70s.
