The independent voice of cricket

Predicted: India’s squad and XI for the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy

India predicted squad for BGT

India ‘s next Test tour will be that of Australia in December 2024. Here is a prediction of what India’s squad and XI might look like for the high-profile series.

India have won their last two Test tours of Australia. Having beaten England 4-1 at home recently with a young side that had several debutants, they have a lot of expectations riding on them to register a record third straight Test series win in Australia.

Here’s a prediction of what India’s squad and XI might look like. We are assuming a squad strength of 16, with two travelling reserves.

India’s predicted squad for 2024/25 Test tour of Australia

Yashasvi jaiswal.

Left-handed brilliance. The second-fastest to 1000 Test runs after Vinod Kambli, Jaiswal has taken just three series to seal his spot at the top. The South Africa tour indicated that there’s still a lot to learn overseas, and the Australia trip could be a real test.

Rohit Sharma

The last dance? Over a decade since his first Test trip to Australia, and his fourth overall, Rohit could return for the final leg of his Test career.

Shubman Gill

Gill earned his stripes four years ago in the same part of the world, his 91 in Brisbane being considered the birth of a star. Since then, there have been a fair few ups and downs, but he’s now firmly positioned to keep his place after two centuries against England.

Virat Kohli

A much-anticipated comebacks. Kohli missed most of the iconic 2020/21 series due to family commitments: it’s a country that has defined him as a Test cricketer across four tours.

Rahul’s Test debut came against Australia a decade ago, and he has since gone through several ebbs and flows to finally settle into a middle-order role. He can also back up as a wicketkeeper if needed, like he did during the South Africa Test tour.

Rishabh Pant

Pant orchestrated India’s greatest overseas Test series victory last time they were in Australia. Yet to play international cricket since his accident, a fit and firing Pant will be one of the first names on the Test teamsheet.

Ravindra Jadeja

Jadeja has gone from strength to strength as a Test all-rounder . He averages under 22 with the ball in Australia and more than 40 with the bat. Jadeja will be 36 by the time the tour starts, potentially making it his last Test tour to Australia.

Kuldeep Yadav

Kuldeep famously took a five-for in Sydney on his first Test tour to Australia in 2018. Since then, he has seen the lows and the highs, and has now forced his way up the pecking order of Test spinners. Given the upturn in his batting as well, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Kuldeep features in the XI ahead of R Ashwin or Shardul Thakur on certain surfaces like the MCG and the SCG.

Mohammed Shami

Shami has toured Australia thrice, although his last tour was cut short by a broken arm in that infamous Adelaide Test where India were bowled out for 36. Armed with all the experience in the world and a bowling strike rate of 54 in Tests in Australia, Shami will be an important part of India’s seam-bowling puzzle for the series.

Jasprit Bumrah

Bumrah has truly evolved into the “master of all trades and conditions” , as the recent Test series against England proved. He averages 21.25 with the ball in Australia and is only getting better. Scary.

Mohammed Siraj

Siraj started his Test career during India’s last Test tour of Australia. Three games into his career, he was leading the bowling attack. Now, he has firmly established himself as one of India’s top three Test seamers.

Shardul Thakur

Shardul has been a regular feature in the Test XI whenever India have toured overseas. He was also part of the XI which won the Gabba Test in 2021, where he contributed with both bat and ball. He was left out of the XI for the second Test in South Africa, but a scorching run of Ranji Trophy form may win his place back.

Among active India players, Ashwin has the most Test wickets in Australia. He played three of the four Tests during the last series, with his first-day spell at the MCG being a memorable one. Ashwin will be 38 by the end of the year and this will most certainly be his last Test tour to Australia.

Dhruv Jurel

Jurel made a quick and surprise entry to the Indian Test side during the home series against England and impressed everyone with his skills and temperament . So much so, that there are talks of considering him as a pure batting option as well for the Australia Tests.

Sarfaraz Khan

Sarfaraz’s Test debut came after a long wait, but with three half-centuries from his first three Tests, he has lived up to the hype he brought with himself. There were doubts over his ability to deal with extreme pace, but the brief passage of play where he dominated Mark Wood in Dharamshala inspired a lot of confidence in his abilities to counter Australian conditions and bowlers if the need arises next summer.

Prasidh Krishna

Krishna had a poor start to his Test career in South Africa and is currently injured. But he still remains the fast bowler with the best attributes to succeed in Australian conditions with his height and hit-the-deck abilities. If he is fit, there are good chances that he will be the backup seamer in the squad.

Akash Deep (Reserve)

Deep had a Test debut to remember in Ranchi . With his whippy action and decent speeds, he can be a handy backup to have in Australia, especially for a five-Test tour.

Mukesh Kumar (Reserve)

A medium-pacer who thrives more on seam movement than on swing or speed, Mukesh’s skills might not be ideally suited to Australia, but with a lot of first-class experience behind his back, he can be expected to hold his own if they need him to play.

Predicted playing XI

Rohit Sharma (c) Yahsasvi Jaiswal Shubman Gill Virat Kohli KL Rahul Rishabh Pant (wk) Ravindra Jadeja Shardul Thakur/Kuldeep Yadav Mohammed Shami Jasprit Bumrah Mohammed Siraj

* Based on conditions.

BG Trophy 2024/25: India tour of Australia to commence in late November, Perth likely to host 1st Test

I ndia is set to tour Australia for the next edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy later this year, with the tour to kickoff in late November. Perth, which didn't get a single game during the last edition in 2020/21, is likely to host the first Test. The tour is keenly-awaited as both sides have given a tough run to each other in the purest format in recent times. India have dominated Australia, winning the last four editions of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. They have won the last two Test series in Australia as well, being the only Asian side to win a red-ball series on Australian soil.

As per a report in The Sydney Morning Herald, Perth is a strong contender to host the series opener. Notably, it will also be the first time since the 1991-92 that India would play a five-match series on Australian soil. After Perth, Adelaide is set to host the second Test whereas Brisbane will welcome both sides for the third encounter. The fourth and final Test will be held in Melbourne's Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and the Sydney Cricket Ground, SCG in Sydney, respectively.

It is to be noted that Cricket Australia is yet to finalise as well as announce the complete schedule for the upcoming season. However, there is a lot of buzz on the upcoming India-Australia Test series due to the rivalry between the two heavyweights. Moreover, the series holds a lot of significance in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle with both India and Australia occupying the top two spots, respectively, at present.

The two sides' last face-off in Tests came during the WTC 2023 final, where Pat Cummins-led Australia beat India by 209 runs at The Oval, London in early June.

Tentative Schedule For India's Tour Of Australia 2024-25 Out ; Perth Likely To Host 1st Test

India won the BGT 2022-23 [X.com]

Perth will play host to the opening Test of India's marquee tour of Australia for the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, reported Australia-based 'The Age', as the two great arch-rivals extend their rivalry with another high-intense Test series.

Team India will be contesting a five-match Test series against Australia for the first time since the nation's 1991-92 tour against Kangaroos, with the historic series being part of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle .

The iconic Adelaide Oval will play host to the second Test of the series as the venue reattains the season's traditional D/N Test it missed out on for the recently concluded summer when the pink-ball fixture was instead held in Brisbane against the West Indies, who famously defeated the hosts .

Venues Out For India Tour Of Australia

Unlike the 2020-21 Indian trip, when it hosted the final Test of the four-match series, the Gabba will be hosting the third Test of the high-octane rubber before the two teams move to the MCG for the Boxing Day Test and the SCG for the New Year's Test in January 2025.

The final dates and schedule for India's tour of Australia are expected to be announced officially in the coming days by Cricket Australia (CA) following discussions with the BCCI.

Rohit Sharma-led tourists would hope for an itinerary that involves landing in Australia well before the first Test to ensure the best possible preparations and adjustment to the challenging conditions.

It remains to be seen if India would consider playing warm-up games at the start of the tour. However, the BCCI has tended to arrange shadow trips for India A in recent years whenever the senior team has travelled overseas, an idea likely to be replicated for the Australian trip.

India have been the most successful touring team to Australia in the last decade, winning the previous two away iterations of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2018-19 and 2020-21 with a 2-1 scoreline. The Asian giants hold the coveted BGT crown, having not faced a series defeat against the arch-rivals since their 2014-15 loss.

India's tour of Australia likely to commence in late November, Perth to host first Test: Report

Cricket Australia is yet to come out with its schedule for the next season but a final announcement is expected by the end of March.

India's tour of Australia likely to commence in late November, Perth to host first Test: Report

The first Test of the five-match series between India and Australia in Australia will played in Perth, with the series slated to commence in late November. According to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald , Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney and Brisbane will host the other four Tests of the highly-anticipated series. The Adelaide Test will in fact be a day-night affair.

“Adelaide will host the second Test and Brisbane the third, with the Boxing Day and New Year’s Tests keeping their traditional time slots in Melbourne and Sydney,” the report said.

Cricket Australia is yet to come out with its schedule for the next season but a final announcement is expected by the end of this month. It will be the first time India will play a five-match series in Australia since the 1991-92 tour, which the hosts won 4-0.

In the past four series between the two teams, India have won on all four occasions, including back-to-back Test series wins in 2018-19 and 2020-21.

In the 2018-19 series, Perth had hosted the second Test, which the hosts won by 146 runs. Ahead of the 2020-21 series between the two countries, Western Australia Cricket Association (WACA) was reportedly upset with the Cricket Australia’s decision to not allot a single Test to Perth.

India's Australia Tour to Begin in Late November, Perth to Host Test Series Opener: Report

India are set to tour Australia later in 2024 for a five-match Test series with Perth hosing the opener.

India’s highly anticipated tour of Australia later this year will kickstart with Perth hosting the five-Test series opener in late November. According to a report Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney have also been penciled in as the venues of the high-profile tour.

As per The Sydney Morning Herald , Adelaide will play host to the second Test of the series and it will be a day-night contest followed by the third game in Brisbane.

Melbourne will continue to host the traditional Boxing Day Test while the New Year’s Test stays with Sydney.

Cricket Australia is yet to finalise the schedule for its next season though and a final announcement could be made by the end of March.

2023-24 tour will be the first time since 1991-92  that the two teams will be competing in a Test series comprising five games. Australia had comprehensively beaten India back then with a margin of 4-0.

However, India have been dominant of the two sides in the past four Test series between them having won on all four occasions. This includes back-to-back Test series wins on Australian soil – 2018-19 and 2020-21 (both by similar margins of 2-1).

India’s last tour of Australia saw them bouncing back after a horror start in Adelaide, a performance that saw them being bowled out for a historic low score of 36 culminating in an eight-wicket thrashing.

The team then bounced back in remarkable fashion despite the absence of the then captain Virat Kohli who returned home after the series opener. India drew level at one-all in Melbourne before fighting to save the Sydney Test and then storming to a memorable three-wicket win in Brisbane.

India haven’t lost a series in the current ICC World Test Championship cycle. The two-time WTC runners-up began their campaign of the latest cycle last year with the West Indies tour where they won 1-0.

They then toured South Africa for another two-Test series which they drew 1-1 after losing the opener. Then they brushed aside England 4-1 in a home Test series recently and currently sit at the top of the WTC points table.

India tour of Australia, 2020-21

The Indian Premier League is back: What are the main talking points?

Can Kohli finally win an IPL crown, will Starc justify that max contract and what role will the Indian election play?

Bangalore's Mohammed Siraj, left, celebrates with teammate Virat Kohli, centre. after the dismissal of Chennai Super Kings' Ruturaj Gaikwad.

The 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) — world cricket’s largest T20 tournament — begins on Friday, March 22, with the defending champion Chennai Super Kings hosting the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

The tournament fields 10 teams packed with many of the greatest players from around the globe.

While the prize money for this year’s IPL has not been confirmed by organisers, and if previous years are anything to go by, the IPL purse this time around is expected to be around $6m, with the winning team collecting approximately $2.4m.

1. Can Virat Kohli finally capture the one major title that has eluded him?

Virat Kohli is a player who has won just about everything there is to win in world cricket — except an IPL title.

The Indian batsman has played in all 16 IPL seasons for Royal Challengers Bangalore, agonisingly finishing tournament runners-up in 2009, 2011 and 2016. He is the all-time leading run-scorer in IPL history.

With Kohli skipping the recent home series against England for personal reasons, some believe the clock is also ticking on the 35-year-old’s IPL career — could 2024 be the iconic batsman’s final season?

This year’s event represents one of the best opportunities for Kohli to win the IPL. He is joined in the 2024 Bangalore squad by the formidable Aussie talents of Glenn Maxwell and Cameron Green, South African captain Faf du Plessis and fast-bowling Indian teammate Mohammed Siraj.

An IPL crown for Kohli would be a perfect final chapter to the career of one the greatest cricket players ever.

Royal Challengers Bangalore's Virat Kohli tosses the ball after taking the catch of Lucknow Super Giants' Ayush Badoni.

2. Will Mitchell Starc live up to that record contract?

Aussie quick Mitchell Starc made headlines last December when he obliterated the IPL auction record , becoming the most expensive player purchase of all time at $2.98m.

Starc, 34, was auctioned off to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as the centrepiece of their 2024 IPL season campaign. The left-arm paceman averages an impressive 23 for his bowling career in T20s with 74 wickets in 60 T20 internationals.

But the left-arm paceman last played in the IPL in 2015 and has a long, injury-riddled history with the competition.

He missed the tournament in 2016 because of a foot fracture. In 2018, Starc signed for the Kolkata for big money – but was injured again and never played for the team. In 2022, he also pulled out, citing “[COVID-19] bubble fatigue”.

In 2024, Kolkata will be hoping that Starc can deliver them their first IPL title in 10 years. If the big Australian stays healthy, few bowlers in world cricket can statistically impact a contest more than Starc.

Australia's Mitchell Starc bowls a delivery during the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup final match between Australia and India in 2023.

3. Why is the Indian election delaying the full schedule launch of IPL 2024?

The nearly two-month-long tournament will begin on Friday, March 22. Last month, organisers only announced a partial schedule for the first 21 fixtures until April 7 as the dates of India’s upcoming general election had not been announced at the time.

Issues related to the management, adequate policing and security of the tournament whilst the country goes to polls are understood to be behind the curtailed schedule announcement.

The  election schedule was announced last week, with the polls running from April 19 to June 4, and IPL organisers are expected to release the dates of the remaining fixtures in the next few days.

After the election, it is expected that organisers will have to play catch-up on the IPL tournament schedule with possible three-a-day matches slated on some days.

It is anticipated the IPL will finish in late May, which places it very close to the adjacent ICC T20 World Cup that begins on 1 June in the USA and West Indies.

A police officer briefs colleagues on the eve of the first Twenty20 cricket match between India and Australia, in Mohali, India in 2022.

4. Can 42-year-old MS Dhoni defy Father Time (again) to deliver Chennai a repeat title?

No player has the Midas touch at the IPL quite like MS Dhoni.

The evergreen Indian wicketkeeper-batsman has won the tournament a record five times in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023.

Rumours are circulating that the 2024 IPL will be his final go-around in the lucrative competition — but we have heard those rumours before. Incredibly, Dhoni has not played a single professional game since the Super Kings defeated the Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2023 final 10 months ago.

If Dhoni is to bring Chennai another title this year, he will certainly have a strong arsenal of players to do it: Ravindra Jadeja, Daryl Mitchell and Moeen Ali headline an impressively credentialed Super Kings outfit.

If Dhoni does clinch a sixth IPL title, it will add to the already remarkable legacy of a player who has experienced an unprecedented second cricketing career peak as an IPL winner, to go along with his hugely successful Indian international career that ended in 2017.

If this is indeed his career farewell, Dhoni —one of India’s all-time favourite cricketers — can expect incredible support throughout the country during the IPL.
