Coach/Cruise/Fly Nature Tour
We recently went on the Real Journeys Nature Cruise of Milford Sound. We chose to do the coach ride out, then cruise, then fly back to Queenstown, and I highly recommend this option. The coach tour was very nice, with wonderful scenery and a good commentary from the driver (Paul Brown). However, I'm very glad we didn't do the coach ride both ways. Flying back instead was more expensive but gave a very different view of the same trip (and wasn't another 4 hours!). The flight was very enjoyable. The cruise itself was well done and the commentator was good. I doubt you'd see more "nature" with this cruise than with the shorter one, but the length was why we chose it and it was a good choice. One comment about lunch: Instead of the boring sandwich option, we chose the bento box and the Indian meal, and both were very tasty. But the sandwich box is packaged so that you can take up on deck and eat while you watched/listened. The two meals we chose were packaged so that they had to be eaten in the dining room. There were windows, but even so, we ate too hastily so that we could get back on deck to enjoy the scenery more fully. Keep that in mind when you choose lunch. Or better yet, pack your own lunch and save the money.
The Foveaux Strait is known for it's rough weather - and so a trip from Bluff to Stewart Island on a ferry is a bit of a hit and miss in terms of wave height and generally rough seas... oh boy did we have a rough ride over... but never felt safer - the crew handled the few sick passengers very well and professionally and on the way back it was much calmer. They also use the ferry to transport goods back and forth - in our case about 12 or more huge boxes full of kina (sea urchin) left the Island for the mainland with us and our luggage... all in a days work for the crew.
I guess the nature of this ferry is that weather conditions will dictate. On both ride over and back - and at the terminals - the crew were very professional. The coffee was free! The two comments - perhaps a bit more commentary info, however the sound system does suffer from that similar to airlines in that no one can actually hear what is being said.
RealJourneys is a large but well-run organization, and we thoroughly enjoyed the two experiences we booked with them: an all-day kayak in Milford Sound and a day cruise in Doubtful. Our guides for the kayak were friendly and knowledgeable, and the guide-to-client ratio was good. Were it not for the roar of overhead helicopters and planes, we might have been able to hear him better! We chose to be picked up in Te Anau, and we also enjoyed the commentary on the way to Milford Sound, and the opportunity to stop at a few places on the way back. The Doubtful Sound trip is expensive but for us it was worth it. The early trip across Lake Manapouri was really quite breathtaking, followed by the bus ride across Wilmot Pass, and then the cruise on Doubtful itself. I need to make special mention of the naturalist guide on this cruise: he was knowledgeable and absolutely wonderful. And he had a way of saying everything that made us want to listen. At one point he made the courageous suggestion that we turn off the boat engines, and that everyone find a spot and stay there for just a few minutes--no walking, no talking, no eating--so we could hear the sounds of Doubtful unimpeded. I was surprised at how completely everyone complied, grateful for the chance to enjoy some quiet, and only sorry that we couldn't do it for longer! It was a highlight among highlights. The scenery here is fabulous in every direction, and we also got to see one last Fiordland Crested Penguin still on his little rock (most of the others had left for the season). I know that the exact itinerary can be different from day to day, and was delighted that ours included a visit to the mouth of the sound where it meets the Tasman Sea. I know that some people think that a visit to the Manapouri Power Station sounds boring, but both the station itself and the conservation story behind it are powerful examples of human engineering and the ability of public opinion to elevate conservation to a level of importance. The visit is short but very interesting, so I'd recommend taking the opportunity.
We decided to take the bus tour to Milford Sound rather than drive and we were so pleased we did. Our driver Alex was fantastic and extremely funny. He made the trip so much fun and very informative. We then went onto the scenic cruise which again was informative and enjoyable, but it was the bus trip that made it worthwhile. I would highly recommend.
We passed through Te Anau with the intent of probably driving to Milford Sound and boating there. However, to save our four young children from another long road excursion we opted to take a day trip on Doubtful Sound out of Manapouri via coach across pass. A little bit expensive but a memorable trip, lots of history and some awesome scenery along with a pod of playful dolphins right alongside the boat. Every NZ trip needs a touch of Fjordland and this was ours. Slightly conscious that we were the only participants in shorts and many had arctic gear on! Hadn't clocked that it rains 2 days out of every 3 in Doubtful and howling winds come with the Roaring Forties but we were fine, the coldest part of the trip was the coach! Very friendly crew too. Head back to Te Anau for a scenic stroll and a meal at the excellent Kepler's restaurant.

Maria helped us get on a wonderful tour after we had been cancelled twice due to weather or overbooking (another company). Service was excellent and we were able to see Milford Sound before we left Queenstown.
It was a fair price for a great tour and excellent service

Amazing scenery and great trip. Unfortunately couldn't hear the commentary so missed a lot which was frustrating, and spoilt it, as there was important information being shared, when we went to find driver to clarify information he'd disappeared..

Yes would buy from them again, kept informed very good prompt customer service.
Yes very good tour lots of stops on way to Milford sound and very informative commentary both on bus and boat trip on the sound. Did pick us up in a taxi with another 2 customers to take to bus a 30min walk away, but did not drop us back to accommodation said they never did that, did call us a taxi but was at our own cost. As did not have our transport worked out an extra expense.

Do you pick up anywhere in Queenstown? I have not booked my accomodations yet but am curious where I would be picked up from? Do you pick up from AirBnBs?
Real NZ uses large 55-seater coaches for this tour. Given the narrow nature of many Queenstown streets- this is not something they are able to offer. They do however collect from the CBD and many bus stops along Frankton road

Latest Questions about Milford Sound Nature Cruise - RealNZ (Milford Sound)
Hello, If I am staying at Te Anau and planning to drive to your Milford sound start point, where is the nearest point I can park my car? I would also like to now how long the drive to is to Milford from Te Anau Thank you
Hi! We say to allow 2.5 hours to drive into Milford Sound for your nature cruise as you will want to stop along the way and take photos. Even if you weren't stopping I would still allow 2 hours as Google Maps does not take into account the windy roads and one-way sections of the road. There is free parking available on Deep Water Basin Road, this is a 20-minute walk from the terminal. Otherwise, if this is full there is a paid parking at the Milford sound terminal

Hello, I would like to book the Milford Sound nature cruise. I was wondering if this tour is wheelchair accessible and if so is it easy access , can the person sit by the window to see out?
Thanks for your inquiry. The Milford Sound Nature Cruise is wheelchair accessible, most of the boats have split levels so you will not be able to access the decks above but they do have space on the lower decks where there are windows so you will still be able to soak in the amazing views of the sounds. Getting onto the boat and into the terminal has wheelchair access so that would be no problem, if you do have some mobility we could also look into getting you up on the upper decks as well

Hi, I know it seems like a silly question, but is the Milford Sound cruise rocky? Do people get sea sick?
Hi there, That's not a silly question at all. The Milford Sound boat cruise actually does not go out beyond the heads into the open ocean. It stays in the confines of the fiord (Sound) the entire time so there is little to no swell. It does however depends on the weather conditions of the day.
