Athens may not be at the top of the “most gay-friendly cities worldwide,” but its LGBTQI+ scene has seen a lot of new additions and changes over the past few years. Cultural spaces, museums, and cafe bars that embrace and promote diversity have popped up all over the city.

So, LGBTQI+ travelers here is a detailed guide to gay Athens for all tastes and ages.

Gay-friendly Neighborhoods in Athens

Athens is generally a LGBTQI+ friendly city. Especially if you are planning to stay and explore the central neighborhoods of the city , you’ll have no problem spotting gay-friendly cafes, bars and events and mingling with the local crowds.

That being said, a few areas in downtown Athens are known for being LGBTQI+ vibrant hubs for both locals and visitors.

Here are a few of the most famous gay-friendly neighborhoods in Athens.

Syntagma Neighborhood

The streets around Syntagma are the beating heart of Athens. Split in half by the famous shopping street called Ermou, Syntagma brims with cafes, bars, and eateries of all kinds that attract crowds.

Here you’ll be able to find gay-friendly spots that are designed to cater to every age and preference. Syntagma is also the area where the Athens Pride festival takes place every year, usually during June.

  • How to get there: Syntagma metro station (blue and red line)

The Kerameikos (Gazi) neighborhood

Home to several gay-friendly places, Gazi has had the reputation of Athens’ most gay-friendly neighborhood for over a decade. Even though the area has lost part of its glory over the years and has been transformed several times, it still lives up to its reputation. Every weekend, the streets around Kerameikos metro station are packed with the city’s young queer crowd. You’ll see them lined up in front of the city’s most bustling nightclubs such as Sodade2, Noiz Club, and BEqueer, or on their way to bar hopping. And even if you are not in the mood for clubbing, you’ll find many restaurants and bars to spend a relaxed night out.

  • How to get there: Kerameikos metro station (blue line)

Monastiraki and Psyrri Neighborhoods

Both Monastiraki and Psyrri’s streets really come to life after the sun sets. These are two of the most famous nightlife hubs in Athens , especially popular with younger crowds and people looking to party until the first rays of dawn. Their narrow streets brim with numerous gay-friendly bars and cafes that will satisfy no visitor. While there, make sure to stop by Agias Eirinis Square – one of the most famous spots in the city.

Protogenous street

Even though not technically a neighborhood, this little street definitely deserves a special mention in this guide. The hip Protogenous street in the area of Psyrri lures the city’s queer and stylish crowd. Lined with funky bars, a high-end hair salon, and clothing shops, the narrow alley in the heart of the city center brims with life from early morning to late at night. You can take a morning walk for window-shopping and homemade lemonade in Barrett bar or go on a stroll in the evening for a glass of wine at Tranzistor’s outdoor tables.

GAY ATHENS – A GUIDE TO THE GREEK CAPITAL FOR LGBTQIA2S+

GAY ATHENS

Though a little more subtle and less public than places like Mykonos , the gay scene is still very much alive and well in Athens and we’ve put together this Gay Athens Guide to help you make the most of your visit.

The movement towards widespread social acceptance of the gay and lesbian community has been somewhat slower in Greece than in many Western countries. Greece still holds onto religious traditional values that exclude the realities of the gay community.

But as society moves forward here, the movement has grown and so has the normalization. A community that used to live in the shadows now has entire neighbourhoods that cater to making them feel at home, and a wealth of gay-friendly bars, nightclubs, restaurants, and cafés.

Here are some of our best picks for hotspots in Athens that will always make you feel seen and warmly welcomed!

Gay friendly accommodation in Athens

If you are visiting Athens for the first time as an LGBTQIA2S+ member and hesitating on where to stay, we’ve got you covered. These hotels and gay-friendly locations are perfect to diffuse any worries about being an LGBTQIA2S+ member traveling abroad, and worried about safety and acceptance.

The Gazi Area, formerly an industrial area housing a gasworks plant for the production of flammable gas, has become gentrified in recent decades. Today, it is a melting pot of cultures, ethnicities, and now, orientations, having become an unofficial gay district.

It’s become synonymous with entertainment and nightlife, thanks to a medley of nightclubs, restaurants, shops, restaurants, and gay bars. This is a great place to visit, and if you’re going out on any kind of pub crawl, you’ll probably end up in this area. It’s also got a smattering of gay-friendly hotels.

Gay-friendly Hotels In and Around Gazi

A For Athens can be found on almost every list of the best gay-friendly hotels in Athens. It lies just outside of Gazi, about a 20-minute walk away, but still very centrally located close to major metro stops and with incredible views of the Acropolis. The hotel has a welcoming interior, combining elements of classical Greek design with modern and earthy accents.

All rooms boast creature comforts like rainfall showers (with space for two), plush beds, and even a private terrace hot tub and in-room hammam if you upgrade to the Red or Blue Suite. But the hotel’s hands-down highlight? Definitely the rooftop bar for an evening drink with one of the most sought after views in Athens.

O&B Boutique Hote l is extremely close to the Gazi neighbourhood (only ten minutes away on foot), a bonus if you think you’ll be spending a lot of time there. This boutique hotel definitely attracts a younger crowd eager to hit the nightclub scene, so you’re sure to make a lot of friends if you’re game for going out.

Hotel guests are greeted with a mezze platter and a drink (something you’ll probably appreciate after the journey to get here), and there is a lounge and bar area just off of the check-in lobby. You can also request a room with a view, where you can see the magnificent Acropolis from your window.

Hotel Fresh is a twenty-minute walk from the Gazi district. This is a really popular choice for LGBTQIA2S+ travellers, especially because of its trendy and fun amenities; the hotel offers morning yoga, a gym facility, a sauna, rental bikes and suggested route maps. You can even book couples massages! But the best place to be in the entire hotel is definitely the rooftop: not only is there a fantastic bar with jaw-dropping views of the city, there’s also a rooftop pool where you can have a quick swim alongside your evening drink.

If you want all the perks of a gay-friendly hotel but with a side of luxury, Hotel King George is the one. Located just a six-minute metro ride away from the Gazi area, the hotel sits right beside Syntagma Square in central Athens.

This is a sumptuously decorated hotel with an old-Hollywood vibe, which is fitting as it once hosted stars like Marilyn Monroe. The hotel offers a wealth of services, including private personal shopping, and the amenities include a luxurious underground spa, access to the indoor pool of the hotel next door, and a high-class in-house restaurant.

NEW Hotel is perfect for the laid-back traveller who’s just after a good time. The eclectic décor reflects this personality, with much of the art pieces and in-room design being used from found materials that have been transformed into art pieces. Gazi is also five minutes away by metro, so you’re not far from the action.

The hotel has a rooftop bar and restaurant and a well-equipped gym facility. Morning breakfast spreads are full of fresh foods and fruit to fuel your day, whether you’re planning to get out and explore the city or step into the hotel’s renowned spa for a little pamper session.

Gay-friendly Hotels in other parts of Athens

The Margi is a stunning hotel in one of Athens’ most upscale seaside communities. It’s less than a half-hour from the city centre but provides all the relaxation and comfort from being just out of reach from the bustle of the city. If you’re planning to hit up any beaches, this is a great spot to stay!

The hotel has a beautiful pool, a poolside bar, and a pool-adjacent spa, three things you can do in that exact order for maximum relaxation. Waterfall showers, plush beds, and gorgeous views make this a great spot to stay.

Tip: book room 405 if you want dual views of the pool and the ocean. Or, if you really want to splurge, book the private, 2,000-square-foot villa that overlooks the Aegean Sea. It has a private terrace with an outdoor Jacuzzi, an elegant living room, and a fully equipped kitchen if you feel like whipping up dinner yourself.

AthensWas Design Hotel is located in Athens’ Plaka neighbourhood, about a fifteen-minute metro ride away from Gazi. This beautiful serene hotel is the perfect gay couple getaway if you’d rather stay somewhere more private and romantic, rather than somewhere busy and full of partying travellers. But, it’s still close to all the nightclubs and gay-friendly spots so if you do feel like a little excitement, you don’t have far to go.

The hotel is situated in the periphery of the Acropolis complex and combined with the quieter neighbourhood you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back to ancient times. Hotel décor is modern and sleek, but warmly welcoming. Unlike many other hotels, there are fewer amenities available to guests (there is no pool and no spa), but things like the incredible breakfast and standout guest service make up for this.

The real knockout part of AthensWas, though, are the incredible rooms: interior modern wood panelling, dark coloured accents, rich drapes, and black marble bathrooms.

Things to see and do in Athens

Aside from the obvious Acropolis & Parthenon and the wonderful Acropolis Museum there are many other things to do in Athens that the gay community like to do including;

  • The Technopolis – a performance venue & history museum in the heart of Gazi
  • Big Olive Walks “Tales of Same Sex Love” – a walking tour of Greece’s history of gay love
  • Vouliagmeni Beach – a gay-friendly beach 35 minutes outside the city
  • Alexander Sauna – a gay sauna in the heart of Gazi

Athens Pride Week

Normally held during the first week of June every year, Athens Pride Week is one of the highlights of the summer in Greece’s capital city.

It’s not only a week-long amalgamation of parties, events, and dazzling performances but an important week for the LGBTQIA2S+ community, in a country where traditional religious values made it hard for this critical social movement of acceptance to gain any real traction for a long time.

The very first Athens Pride Week took place in 2005, with around 500 attendees. Today, the celebration draws around 40,000 people, an incredible jump from just 16 years ago and showing how far Greece has come in its acceptance and support of this community.

This is an amazing week-long event that not only has a heavy emphasis on socialization and connection but on human rights and health initiatives.

There are always health organizations offering resources and free on-site HIV and STI testing. Many local politicians and public figures also attend, including the mayor, so you can be sure that this is one big party with some very prominent support.

Dining out in Athens

Athens has a wealth of popular restaurants, nightclubs, and bars frequented by the gay community.

Whether you’re looking for a taste of the city’s best cuisine, a cocktail menu like you’ve never seen before, or you just want to meet and mingle with like-minded people from all over the world (or all of the above), there will definitely be something for you on this list.

Rooster Cafe is great for typical Greek fare in a gay-friendly restaurant. As the name suggests, they specialize in chicken-based dishes and they are open during the day which is a nice change of pace for LGBTQIA2S+ folk who aren’t into burning the midnight oil.

Food is served in a garden-like setting, with great service and delicious food. The portions are generous and will often require a takeaway dish that staff are more than happy to provide. The drinks are popular for good reason: cold, refreshing, and flavourful.

Prosopa is an amazing gay-friendly restaurant with some pretty mouthwatering food. Most of their dishes are made with fresh ingredients and meats sourced locally, including seafood, meat, and produce. The food combines Greek cuisine with Western elements, such as tenderloin with espresso and figs, of all things!

Their website shows that they love good wine, and offer an extensive wine list. This is a popular gay haunt, being located in the Gazi area.

Mount Lycabettus has the best views in town with sweeping views over the city, The Acropolis and out to sea and the islands. You can access it by catching a Fenicular tram or driving and the sunsets are incredible. Have dinner and drinks at Orizontes Restaurant for a truly romantic and unforgettable evening.

If it’s a traditional Greek Taverna you are looking for then you are spoilt for choice. We think Lithos Tavern has the best Moussaka in town while Nikitas is our favourite spot in Psyri for a quick lunch. In Gazi you can’t go wrong at Nezos or Alexandras while Tres Laloun is great for Vegans and Privilege is perfect for a romantic dinner with amazing views.

Athens Gay Bars

Sodade2 might be one of Athens’ most famous gay nightclubs. Being one of the most popular club choices, weekends get jam-packed and there is almost always a long queue, but that only adds to the excitement and it’s worth it once you get inside. There are two dance floors, each playing different music: one for contemporary pop hits, and the other featuring house music.

Koukles Club is a must-visit; run by trans women, it’s become a symbol in the city for the LGBTQIA2S+ community. It’s particularly famous for its live shows, where they run nightly cabaret and drag shows. It’s located in the Koukaki neighbourhood of Athens, only a short metro ride from Gazi (or a half-hour walk, if you are so inclined).

BEqueer is one of Athens premier Queer clubs and have special themed shows and events including live bands, Halloweem events and Drag Shows. Open on Friday and Saturdays until 6am.

MOE Club is a great spot to unwind after the afterparty; open until six am, this is the place to go when all the other clubs have closed and you’re not done with your night. They play live music with DJs, do regular theme nights, and play a lot of Greek hits. Moe is located in the heart of the Gazi gay village.

Enodia Bar & Café is a more casual gay-friendly bar, playing more Greek music than Western hits. They also have an outdoor back terrace that’s open in the daytime during the summer months, so this is a spot you can enjoy while you’re exploring the city during the day, or you can come experience the fun at night. It’s quieter than your average music-thumping club, more of a sit-down-with-a-drink kind of spot.

The TRAP is both a café and music bar located down an alley off of Syntagma Square in central Athens. Though it’s only been open for a few years, it is both straight and gay friendly and has already amassed a loyal LGBTQIA2S+ following. Stepping inside is like jumping back in time; the decor is classy and vintage-feeling and the cocktail menu is truly extensive.

The Ultimate LGBTQ Guide to Athens

G reece has always been high on the list of LGBTQ+ destinations. It’s one of the most liberal and welcoming countries in Europe for travelers of all colors of the rainbow. Mykonos, Santorini, Paros, and other beautiful islands have attracted crowds who vacation at lavish beach clubs and party at some of the best events on the queer calendar. But it’s not only the islands where you can find a community. Gay Athens is one progressive place with several saunas, restaurants, bars, nightclubs, and other establishments that specifically cater to queer people.

Although the majority of the population of Athens is fairly liberal, they especially extended this welcoming nature in the artistic Gazi district, where the vast majority of the LGBTQ+-owned and -operated businesses are located.

To help plan your queer-friendly travels, we’ve put together a comprehensive list of the major LGBTQ+ institutions and safe spaces in the city. From where to party, where to stay and what to do, here’s your guide to gay Athens.

Gazi district

In proximity to the Acropolis sits the latest hub of arts and entertainment — the Gazi district. If you’re looking to go bar-hopping in a queer-friendly safe space, you’ll find it here. As a bonus, the most popular historical sites are just a few stops away on the Athens Metro.

Platia Agias Irinis

Platia Agias Irinis, a square near Monastiraki, has become another popular place in the city to get to know the queer community. The square and its surrounding restaurants and businesses have become a hot spot and a safe place for all.

Drive 30 minutes from the center of Athens and you’ll find Limanakia, one of the most famous gay beaches in all of Greece. During the warm summer months, this nudist santuary, with its rugged shoreline and clear waters, is packed with locals and tourists. Nearby, you can also grab food and drinks at one of the many surrounding LGBTQ+-friendly establishments.

Alexander Sauna Men’s Club

Although Athens has several saunas and spas, it’s Alexander Sauna Men’s Club , in the heart of the Gazi district, that tops the list. You can enjoy cocktails in the lush gardens or head to the upper floors to indulge in, shall we say, more private matters — like those that might take place in the expansive foam playroom.

A Gay Friendly Guide of Athens

gay tour athens

WE ALL  LOVE  ATHENS!

An LGBT guide to exploring Athens

Not only boasting spectacular archaeological sites, delicious food and glorious weather, Athens now holds a subtle yet progressive gay scene. We’ve hit the popular hang-outs of the LGBT community to experience the excitement for ourselves and share with you the gay gems of Athens…

EAT and Drink

If you are looking for a place to grab a small bite and kick back and relax, Rooster cafe is the place for it. Hiding in the shade of the glorious Cathedral of Saint Irini, Rooster provides a cosy interior with a chilled out atmosphere. It’s the most popular gay hang-out in the city due to its perfect combination of contemporary elegance, fantastic comfort food and extensive cocktail menu. Open from 9am until late evening you can enjoy the cafe’s personality at any time of the day; ‘people watch’ whilst having breakfast    with fresh coffee or share Rooster’s fabulous finger food with friends under the stars.

What makes Rooster stand out from the rest is its quirky features. A cute little booksharing library welcomes the exchange and borrowing of books and frequent art/photography exhibitions that you can appreciate whilst sipping on your favorite beverage, add a touch of culture to this funky cafe.

Some other gay friendly cafes/ bars throughout Athens:

– Del Sol Cafe – Trendy cafe in the gay neighborhood of Gazi. Awesome waffles by day, lively ambience by night!

– Enodia Cafe – Traditional Greek interior with friendly staff and frequent special events. Great music!

– Briki – A lively little bar with warm jazzy interior, great for a weekday pint after a long working day!

– Queen Bee – Elegant yet rustic brunch and breakfast joint. Exquisite baked treats!

This colourful cafe definately ticks all the boxes!

There is a wide selection of clubs for the LGBT community to choose from, most of which are located in the gay neighborhood of Gazi. This district of Athens has a very detectable and very friendly gay vibe, possessing not just stylish discos, but also boutique shops, chic restaurants and art galleries, it’s definitely an area for members of the LGBT community to enjoy.

The clubs being so different in interior design and music genre, we couldn’t agree on which place we liked best, so below we’ve named the most popular discos with both gay locals and tourists alike!

Shamone , a vibrant club that’s small but has a huge personality. Great cocktails, stunning visuals and fantastic dance music bring young gay clientele to this hotspot. They’re open throughout the week but weekends seem to be the most popular time to go as they hold many special events such as drag shows, 90’s night and have various hot artists and DJs performing. A hip and hunky hotspot!!

Sodade 2, this place seems to be a bit more popular with the Greek locals as they tend to play more Greek pop than anything else. It’s pretty and sassy and the bar service is great. Hosting alternative karaoke events and themed parties, this place is great for a unique night out. Regardless of it being on the small side, the cool vibe of the place makes up for the overcrowdiness.

Upupa epops , more of a cocktail bar than a club, but boy do these guys know how to make a good drink! Upupa epops has managed to bring the outside inside, with their perfectly well balanced classy outdoorsy decor that makes for a truely striking place to hang out. Their food is homey and hearty whilst presented in a chic way and the friendly bar staff will be more than happy to help you pick out one their a twist. This place has its own sense of unique elegance and will stimulate all of your senses. Make sure to try their Mango G&T!  favourite cocktails with

There are a few gay hot spots for sauna and spa throughout Athens, many of which that seem to be aimed at…the more wild clientele let’s say! So looking for somewhere a bit more peaceful, we chose to indulge in a visit to the Hammam Baths. Combining water, heat and   steam, the roots of this ritual lie in Ancient Greek times, making it the most fitting way to relax and beautify yourself in Athens.

Treat yourself to a warm soapy massage, exfoliations, deep cleanses, ancient massage techniques and ginormous baths filled with olive oil bath bubbles in this heavenly hotspot, found in the quaint district of Plaka. In addition they also provide more basic treatments such as hair removal, manicures and pedicures and you can finish off every treatment in their tranquil lounge with refreshing tea and loukoumis. This is a fantastic place to get ready for a night out or to take a break away from the rat race. Surrounded by marble and stone and service at the click of your fingers, the Hammam Baths will steam away your stresses and make you feel like a Greek God for a day.

gay baths/spas throughout Athens:

– FLEX – Located nearby to Monastiraki metro station, this spa is extravagant to say the least. Including a 40 man steam room, 15 man sauna, whirlpool, solarium, dark room, play zone, private cabins and so much more, This is the place to splIsh and splash!

– Alexander sauna – Famous for its cruising spa fun, this sauna provides you with everything needed to party. With a sling, glory holes and other X rated activities, this sauna is less about relaxing and more about having fun! Wink wink!

There are so many fun things to do and see in Athens, it’s just about finding which activity suits you best. It’s fundamental that you go to check out the famous Acropolis and its highly acclaimed museum and other landmarks such as Zeus’s temple and Agora are also a definate must do.

If food and cooking is your thing, then why not book a food tasting tour of the city. Combine sight seeing with the tasting of traditional Greek snacks and dishes to introduce yourself to the city centre and the deliciousness of the Greek cuisine . There are many different type of tours to choose from; the classic, vegetarian, twilight tours, wine tasting tours and many more, so you are bound to find the perfect tour for you to discover Athens.

We suggest an evening at the Plaka, where you'll find typical Greek taverns.

Greece Athens Gay Tour

Overnight in Athens.

Athens Islands gay cruise

Day 3 - Athens - Three Islands Cruise After breakfast, enjoy a Three Islands Cruise (adjoining gay friendly bus tour) and enjoy your day cruising through the water.

Experience the charm of the Greek islands by visiting three of the most attractive isles near Athens; Aegina, Poros and Hydra.

Aegina has a lovely town full of neoclassical buildings and a well -preserved ancient Temple dedicated to the local goddess Athena Afea, at some distance from the town. This island is famous for its tasty pistaccchio nuts and the special sweets the locals make with them.

During the time you’ll spend there, you can try some of the delicious specialties. Poros is a small and very green island, closer to the Peloponnese than to Attica, with a lovely forest of lemon trees and a very nice main town and charming promenade with lots of coffee and souvenir shops.

Finally, Hydra (Ydra) is an extremely picturesque place, because of the unique architecture of its fortress mansions, which once belonged to the ship-owners of the Ottoman rule period. As far as local delicacies go, this isle is known for their almond desserts (made of almond pasta), that you can taste during your visit.

Re-embark for the sail back to Piraeus Port where you will arrive late afternoon and transfer back to your hotel.

Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.

Argolis Gay Tour

Day 4 - Athens – Argolis Tour After breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel for your full day Argolis tour, visiting the renowned place Mycenae and Epidaurus (adjoining gay friendly bus tour). This tour will also include a delicious lunch.

While driving along the coastal road of the Saronic Gulf to Mycenae you will reach the ancient site of Mycenae which means 'Rich in Gold'. Mycenae was the kingdom of mythical Agamemnon, first sung by Homer in his epics, and is the most important and richest palatial center of the Late Bronze Age in Greece. Its name was given to one of the greatest civilizations of Greek prehistory, the Mycenaean civilization.

Continue the tour through Argos on to Nauplia 1st capital of Greece in 1829. After lunch depart to Epidaurus, on the headland called "Nesi" at Palaia Epidaurus, the theatre of the ancient city is quite well-preserved, in the shape it acquired during the latter years of its function. Apart from a few rows of seats, the cavea is made of limestone with poros staircases. Until now, nine cunei with eighteen rows of seats have been excavated, which originally could accommodate about 2000 spectators. All the benches and thrones of the theatre carry inscriptions with the names of the donors while implying a direct relationship of the monument with the cult of Dionysus. The theater is marveled for its exceptional acoustics, which permit almost perfect intelligibility of unamplified spoken word from the proscenium or scene to all 12,000 spectators, regardless of their seating.

Return back to Athens and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.

We suggest for you last evening enjoy a night out at the Plaka, where you will find typical Greek tavernas complete with music, dancing and celebratory throwing of plates. It's an experience not to be missed!

Day 5 - Athens - Departure After breakfast, check out of your hotel and transfer to Athens, Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport, for your flight back home with everlasting memories of Greece!

Goodbye and Antío :)

Greece Gay Travel

Gay travellers will fall in love with this thick slice of hedonistic heaven..

From ancient Olympia to modern Mykonos, Greece has always been a country where the food is as rich as history, and the locals are as hot as the weather. Thankfully, travellers can cool off in the balmy Aegean Sea, which laps the country’s beloved beaches. While you’ll find gay bars throughout the country, Mykonos deserves a special shout-out. The island’s extraordinary nightlife is as flaming as saganaki—and just as delicious. If you’re planning a big gay Greek adventure, we highly recommend packing your stretchy and party pants…and maybe even a toga for good measure.

LGBT Rights in Greece

Gay greece travel, best places to visit in greece.

Greece has a long and storied history with homosexuality. Beyond Greek mythology being particularly homoerotic—looking at you, Apollo—some of the best-known gay historical figures were of Greek descent. Notably Alexander The Great. Today, Greece remains a largely LGBTQ+ welcoming destination, especially in major cities and throughout the laid-back islands. However, the openly homophobic Greek Orthodox Church maintains a firm grasp on day-to-day life. Much of rural Greece remains devoutly religious.

Gay Activity: Legal Lesbian Activity: Legal Same-Sex Marriage: Legal Right to Change Gender: Legal, surgery not required Same-Sex Adoption: Single only LGBT Discrimination: Illegal in some contexts

Fact: Gays love Greece. It’s one of the oldest and best-known LGBTQ+ destinations. Specifically, Mykonos is the epicentre of gay Grecian nightlife, where local and international Queens perform for bears, boys, and the occasional lesbian. Countless beaches are overridden with queer people in and out of designer speedos. Circuit parties thump out club beats throughout high season, with the largest and most famous being XLSIOR hitting the island every August. Finally, Athens Gay Pride is a celebration of local queer culture. It tends to put activism and social equality at the forefront of the festival.

Gay Villages in Greece: Athens – The Gazi district Mykonos – No Village per see, but most of the island’s LGBTQ+ scene is in Chora.

5. Athens The country’s capital is a clash of historic sites against the modern city.

4. Akrotiri One of modern history’s greatest excavation sites: An entire Minoan city buried beneath volcanic ash after the eruption of 1613 BC.

3. Acropolis In a country brimming with archaeological sites of cultural and historical significance, the Acropolis of Athens is arguably the most culturally and historically significant.

2. Santorini Postcard-perfect Santorini is as Greek as it gets, with its famous stucco architecture rising right out of the Aegean.

1. Mykonos For decades, this lively Greek island has been the preferred hedonistic escape of Europe’s LGBTQ+ (but mostly gay male) population. And its reputation seems to be growing! But beyond the Adonis eye candy and all-night parties, Mykonos also features fantastic local restaurants, gorgeous beaches, and international shopping. Most importantly, it is conveniently a short ferry from Delos, arguably Greece’s most archaeologically rich island.

Best Time to Visit: If you’re looking to party in Mykonos, plan your trip in the high season (Jun–Aug). For cooler weather and fewer crowds, shoulder seasons tend to be a better choice (Apr & May, Sep & Oct)

What a remarkable tour.

What a remarkable tour to a country with such rich history, culture and food. Everything was perfect, and we felt, in every instance, that our Out Adventure hosts, tour guides and boat crew truly cared about us and did their best to make this trip memorable. Every day brought new experiences and towns, and we had delicious meals offered onboard and ample opportunities to explore great restaurants on the islands. But what was most special was sharing this experience with like-minded travelers, all with the zest for life and adventure!

Gay Athens Athens City Guide

Ah, Athens. Mother of democracy, daughter of Zeus and naughty stepsister of the global economic crisis. Lying at the juncture of Europe, Asia and Africa, Greece is lucky heir to the heritage of the Byzantine Empire, four centuries of Ottoman Turkish rule and Classical Greece. And so, its capital city, regardless of recent financial troubles and political turmoil, is still, without doubt, one of the world’s finest cities, drenched as it is in ancient history, trail-blazing culture and year-round sunshine. As for modern Athenians, nothing can keep them from their bold afternoon coffee breaks, street-side philosophising and endearing laissez-faire attitude. Nor should anything stop you. Savour the city slowly, soaking up the affordable luxury amid world-class archaeological sites, before hitting the grungier neighbourhoods for a taste of contemporary Greek culture and its glittering nightlife. Looking for the ultimate Athens points of interest? Mr Hudson’s Athens gay city guide has got you covered.

The best hotels in Athens

Let’s start this gay Athens travel guide with a roundup of the best places to stay. Plaka is the old central standby that gets all the love (as well as the crowds), and understandably so: it’s the cultural heartbeat of the city and boasts many of the best things to do in Athens. Sitting downslope from the famed Acropolis and sandwiched east and west between humming Syntagma and Monastiraki squares, Plaka is Athens’ oldest and most famous neighbourhood. It also happens to be the location of AthensWas Hotel , offering central yet quiet accommodation tastefully designed with an archaic touch. As well as daily traditional Greek breakfasts, the hotel also boasts a quiet terrace and garden rooftop balcony offering unparalleled panoramas of the Acropolis and all of Athens. Just 200 metres from Monastiraki Square is 14 Reason Why , a beautiful property on prime real estate within walking distance of Ermou shopping area and the Roman Agora, featuring a terrace and shared lounge.

The Foundry Hotel

The Foundry Hotel

Northeast of Plaka you’ll find Kolonaki: elite, modern and sophisticated without being too pretentious. Home to Athens’ wealthiest locals and characterized by artisan shops, hip cafes and ritzy restaurants, it’s fashionable to stay in Kolonaki. With that in mind, why not try the Coco-Mat Hotel Athens ? Offering well-located, elegantly designed units within one of the city’s most vibrant areas, Coco-Mat is a modish haven, providing relaxation, homemade breakfasts and select services. If being close to the beach is a priority, however, head down to Glyfada, a lively, lovely and self-sufficient seaside neighbourhood 30 minutes south of central Athens. Luxurious and contemporary minimalist  Brasil Suites Boutique Hotel is a fine choice if you plan on staying in the area, just a short walk from Glyfada’s exclusive shopping district and beach.

Check out LGBTQ+ Athens with a Local

  • Copied to clipboard

Athens has a long history of LGBTQ+ representation. Today our inclusive, diverse city is perfect for a romantic getaway, but also ideal for a single’s night out.

Athens is often hailed as the birthplace of democracy, but it was also the birthplace of gay culture. Openly practiced and celebrated, homosexuality was part of the social fabric of ancient Athens. Today, the Greek capital remains a very gay-friendly city, with countless gay and lesbian bars, many openly gay celebrities, and a vibrant LGBTQ+ community. Your local will introduce you to the LGBTQ+ scene, including cafes, bars, and beaches, as well as suggestions for drag shows and nightlife.

There is something wonderful to be said for bypassing the all too common hop on hop off tourist experience and having a one on one ramble through the city with an individual that is unscripted and wholly authentic; instructive, illuminating, ingenious!

This two-hour tour began with the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Syntagma Square, with a walk through the National Gardens, past the Numismatic Museum and Garden, the Academy of Arts and Sciences, through the neighborhoods of Monastiraki, Psiri and Gazi. It was definitely a five-star experience. Thank you to This Is Athens for making this program possible.

Country music star, Athens native ‘steadily improving,’ cancels rest of tour after heart attack

ATLANTA — Country music star and Athens native Colt Ford continues to recover after having a heart attack earlier this month.

Ford was doing a show in Gilbert, Arizona, on April 4 and fell ill after the performance.

He was initially admitted into the intensive care unit at Banner Desert Medical Center in Mesa, Arizona and was later transferred to the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale.

Since then, Ford has been steadily improving but has canceled the rest of his 26 tour dates while recovers,  according to reports.

“At this time, his family is requesting privacy and appreciates your continued thoughts and prayers,” Ford’s team said in a statement.

Golf Channel analyst Charlie Rymer, who is a friend of Ford’s, said his condition was touch and go at one point.

“Odds of survival were grim. Now … He’s making great progress and doing better by the minute. Please keep Colt and his family in your prayers,” Rymer said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Mike Flaskey, CEO of Mike Flaskey Entertainment, also gave an update saying Ford was “awake and talking, after being incapacitated for 7 days from a life-threatening health issue after his last show. God has worked a miracle, and we need those prayers to continue for a full recovery!”

Colt Ford  is known among the country music world for his mix of country and rap. He’s had several No. 1 hits, along with “five consecutive Top 10 debuts on the Billboard Top Country Albums Chart with Declaration of Independence bowing at #1 in 2012.”

Ford has done collaborations “with everyone from Toby Keith, Brad Paisley, Keith Urban, and Jermaine Dupri to members of No Doubt, Lit, and Lady Antebellum,”  according to his website. “Additionally, he co-wrote Jason Aldean’s #1 hit ‘Dirt Road Anthem’ and Brantley Gilbert’s #1 hit ‘Country Must Be Country Wide’ as a behind-the-scenes force in the studio.”

Low amateur Neal Shipley finishes dream week at Masters with Tiger Woods pairing on Sunday

Change Text Size

Neal Shipley guaranteed himself a chair in Butler Cabin by Friday night. The 23-year-old Ohio State graduate student was the lone amateur to make the cut, shooting an admirable 76 in brutally difficult second-round conditions.

That meant Sunday night would always be one to remember. With low amateur honors comes an invite to sit with the eventual Masters champion and be honored on national television in Butler Cabin.

“Playing with Tiger, Sunday at the Masters, the whole week, I think I have to win one of these things to kind of top this week,” Shipley said after his final round 73.

Four days at the Masters can transform a golfer’s life. Usually, that distinction is the champion’s alone. Shipley can build a case from this week – progressing from relative anonymity outside of the most informed golf circles to low amateur honors at the Masters and a tee time with arguably the greatest golfer of all time.

A bit of incidental serendipity secured the young amateur the most desirable Sunday pairing in golf. Shipley made a double bogey on the par-4 18th on Saturday to shoot 80 and fall back to 11-over. He was understandably frustrated. He had hoped to do more than make the cut. He wanted to contend into the weekend, just as Sam Bennett did a year ago. Those hopes were dashed. The frustration quickly faded when Shipley’s caddie got the news of Sunday’s pairing.

“That's when the emotions turned around,” Shipley said.

So, on Sunday, Shipley floated around Augusta National without care. He talked with Woods about golf and Woods’ 15-year-old son Charlie . In between, Shipley hit some golf shots, too.

“Just kind of a cool, like, casual round with Tiger, you know, other than you're here at the Masters,” Shipley said.

That’s a big qualifier, though Shipley’s play was enough to believe the assertion. He made four birdies en route to his 1-over round of 73. Shipley was four shots better than Woods, who labored to shoot 77 in his 100th career round at Augusta National. Shipley also got three more hours of sleep than Woods. Woods told Shipley he woke up at 3:45 a.m. for their tee time. Shipley slept like a baby and awoke at 6:45 a.m.

“He's such a normal guy and really cool,” Shipley said of Woods. “He was great to me all day. Couldn't be more appreciative of him just being awesome today, and it was just really cool to be around him and just the attention he gets and the roars. The crowds were phenomenal.”

It’s undoubtedly the biggest spotlight Shipley has played under in his career. The former James Madison golfer transferred to Ohio State as a graduate student in 2022 after earning a quantitative finance degree in just three years. Shipley started 2024 by winning the Southwestern Invitational in California for his first collegiate victory and last summer, he finished second in the Dogwood Invitational, Sunnehanna Amateur and Trans-Mississippi Amateur.

Then, he finished runner-up to Nick Dunlap at the 2023 U.S. Amateur to earn an invitation to the Masters. He will play in the U.S. Open in June as well, and this week’s experience will make him better for it.

“I was just kind of doing my thing and not doing anything special, that was good enough to make the cut and compete out here and beat a lot of players that are on the PGA TOUR,” Shipley said.

That included Woods. If nothing else, Shipley can say he bested the 15-time major winner at Augusta National.

Pretty good.
