How to apply for a Schengen visa from Bahrain

How to apply for a Schengen visa from Bahrain

If you are from Bahrain and intending on visiting Europe, you may find it difficult to travel throughout the continent without obtaining a Schengen visa. If you successfully apply for a Schengen visa from Bahrain, you will be able to spend up to 90 days in the entire Schengen area—a territory comprising 26 of the most visited countries in the region, including France, Germany, and Italy. Today’s blog will provide a step-by-step guide for how to apply for a Schengen visa from Bahrain. If you are considering applying for a short-stay Schengen visa from Bahrain, read on to learn about the Schengen visa requirements for Bahrain citizens and residents and Schengen visas and types for Bahrain passport holders. In addition, you will find the answers to some commonly asked questions, including, “Where do you apply for Schengen visa in Bahrain?” and, “How much does a Schengen visa cost from Bahrain?” All this about the Schengen visa for Bahrain residents and citizens—and much more—below:

  • There are certain deadlines you must observe when applying for a Schengen visa. Being mindful of these deadlines means having a general idea of when you need to travel, so that you can submit your application on time. Obtaining travel-medical insurance, receiving invitation letters, checking your passport validity—fulling all of these (and additional) requirements take time, so make sure you leave yourself enough in the run up to your trip.
  • If you are applying for a short-stay Schengen visa from Bahrain, you should hand in your application at least 15 days before you intend to travel to Europe.
  • And while it’s always good so submit a Schengen visa application ahead of time, there is such a thing as being too early—most applicants are not allowed to apply earlier than six months before they intend to travel.
  • The type of Schengen visa you need reflects your purpose for travel. There are a number of different available Schengen visas or types for Bahrain passport holders; some of the post popular include Tourist, Business, and Medical Schengen visas
  • Browse the complete list of Schengen visa types through this link , and decide which one best reflects why you are travelling. The purpose you select will be the type of visa you should apply for on your official Schengen visa application form.
  • The type of entry category you receive will determine if (and if so, how many times) you can re-enter the Schengen area after entering it for the first time on your Schengen visa.
  • Schengen visas are available in single, double, and multiple entry categories. If you receive a single entry Schengen visa, you will not be allowed to return to the Schengen area after you leave it—even if you still have time left on your visa. If you have a double entry Schengen, you will be able to exit the Schengen area and re-enter it one time during your visa validity period. Finally, if your receive a multiple-entry Schengen, there will be no limitations on the number of times you can enter, exit, and re-enter the Schengen area—so long as you are exiting and re-entering while your visa is still valid.
  • For example, if you enter France—A Schengen Member State—and return to Bahrain, you will have officially left the Schengen area, and you will only be let back into the zone if you have, at minimum, a double-entry Schengen visa. Therefore, if you want to travel back and forth between Bahrain and the Schengen area, you should pursue a multiple-entry Schengen visa from Bahrain.
  • Now that you know your relative travel dates and Schengen type and category, it is time to determine your primary destination in the Schengen area; i.e. which country in the Schengen area you will be spending the most time in while on your trip. The country that reflects your primary destination is the country you will apply for your Schengen visa from.
  • For example, if you are planning to spend 90 days traveling throughout multiple countries in the Schengen area, but you plan to spend a majority of days in France, then you will apply for a French Schengen visa from Bahrain.
  • If you are spending an equal amount of time in two or more countries (for example, 30 days in France and 30 days in Spain) you will apply for your Schengen visa from the country that represents your first entry into the Schengen area (so if the first time you enter the Schengen area is by flying directly from Manama to Paris, France would represent your first entry into the Schengen area, so you would apply for a Schengen visa from France.
  • Even if you know what country you are applying to, you may still be wondering, “Exactly where do you apply for Schengen visa in Bahrain?”
  • You should apply for your Schengen visa for Bahrain residents and citizens from the embassy, consulate, or visa application center affiliated with the Schengen country you are applying through. Because Bahrain is small country, the majority of these locations will be in the capital of Manama.
  • Certain countries, particularly smaller ones, will delegate other larger countries to represent their respective consular interests and to oversee the issuance of Schengen visas. For example, those applying for a Dutch Schengen visa will do so via the German embassy in Manama (rather than the Netherlands Embassy).
  • Valid passport with blank space for your Schengen visa
  • Two passport photos
  • Proof of accommodation
  • Proof of finances
  • Proof of travel medical insurance
  • Visa application form
  • In addition to the above required basic materials, applicants must also submit a number of supplemental documents, depending on what type of Schengen visa they are seeking.
  • For example, if you are applying for a Visiting Friends and Family Schengen visa, you will likely have to obtain an invitation letter from the person who you plan to visit in the Schengen area.
  • Please note that if any of the above documents are not already in English or the official language(s) of the Schengen country you are applying through, you may have to submit them with an official translation (into English, the official language(s) of the country, or another accepted language).
  • For example, if you are applying for a Visiting Friends and Family Schengen visa from France and you receive an invitation letter from someone in Paris that is written in Arabic rather than French, you may need to have that letter translated by a notary, and submit both the original and the translation as part of your application. If you are confused about this issue, contact the embassy/consulate of the country you are applying to in order to find out what languages they accept document submissions in.
  • The majority of Schengen countries will allow Bahraini citizens and residents to apply through the official Schengen visa form, which is universal to all countries and accessible online here:
  • Download, print out, complete, and submit this form alongside the rest of your basic required and supplemental documents.
  • Alternatively, depending on what Schengen country you are applying to, you may be asked to apply through its online visa portal; for example, both French and German Schengen visa applicants are asked to apply using the respective French and German online-visa portal, available here ; and here , respectively.
  • Most Schengen countries require that you make an appointment to drop of your Schengen visa (verses, say, simply dropping off your passport during normal embassy operating hours).
  • If you applied online through a country-specific online portal, you will likely have received a prompt to schedule your appointment.
  • If you didn’t apply online (or didn’t receive a prompt) you will likely have to contact your application destination directly in order to make one (or see if you need one).
  • Almost all Schengen visa applicants are required to attend their Schengen visa appointment in person.
  • Your Schengen visa appointment is where you will drop off your application, pay your Schengen visa fee (if you haven’t already paid it online), submit your biometric information (if you haven’t already done so on a recent previous Schengen visa application), and attend a short interview.
  • If you are wondering, “How much does a Schengen visa cost from Bahrain?” The answer is 80 EUR for most applicants. For complete information on Schengen visa fees, click here .
  • Your biometric information is your fingerprints and photos, which all applicants are required to submit unless they have done so within the past 59 months.
  • If your application for a Schengen visa from Bahrain is accepted, you will receive a notification to pick up your passport (which contains your new visa). After doing this, you can go on your way!
  • If you are rejected for a Bahraini Schengen visa, you have the right to appeal. For more information on the general appeals process, click here .

Have you ever dreamed of seeing the Eiffel Tower in Paris or Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome? Perhaps you’d like to explore the mythical temples in Greece or gaze up at the Northern Lights from Norway. With a Schengen visa , you can do all these and more.

The Schengen visa is a “short stay visa” that allows you to travel around several countries in Europe , namely: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland .

Guide to Applying for a Schengen Visa in Bahrain

Unless you’re a national of a visa-exempt country or a citizen of the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) — you need a Schengen visa to “transit” through the airports of the countries cited above. The visa allows you to stay for not more than 90 days within a 180-day period .

To apply for a Schengen visa, here is a step-by-step guide on what to do:

#1 – Decide on what country you would like to visit.

#2 – Schedule an appointment through the VFS Global website . Select the country you plan to visit. For best results, set an appointment at least 2 or 3 months before your intended date of travel.

#3 – Prepare the necessary documents. These include:

  • Filled out Application Form from the VFS Global website
  • Passport (original and photocopies; valid for at least 3 months before date of travel, issued within previous 10 years , and with at least 2 consecutive blank pages )
  • Residence Visa (original and photocopies; valid for at least 3 months after date of departure from Schengen country)
  • Medical Insurance for travel (covering entire period of travel and valid for all Schengen countries)
  • Certificate of Employment (indicating start date, work position, and monthly salary)
  • Proof of Financial Capability ( e.g. bank statements, payslips)
  • Flight Tickets (valid and confirmed)
  • Hotel Accommodation (confirmation email)
  • Passport-size Photo (recent, with white background)

NOTE: Sponsors and employers supporting a visa application must be informed that visa applications may only be submitted and withdrawn by the visa applicant. Hence, no information will be provided or action taken without the written and signed consent of the applicant.

Regarding applications for business and visit purposes, sponsors and employers may provide a Letter of No Objection or an invitation   letter   ( e.g.  stating coverage of transport and accommodation costs). Send these directly to the applicant so that he/she can submit them during his/her visa appointment.

#4 – Submit all documents to the VFS Global Office. Proceed to the department of the country you plan to visit. You may need to wait for an hour or two. When your turn comes, the staff will check your requirements and obtain your biometrics ( i.e. photo, fingerprints).

Once your application is approved, surrender your passport for the Schengen visa stamp. You will receive an official receipt , which you will need to claim your stamped passport.

As for the visa application fee , the amount may vary depending on your destination. For a short stay visa in France , for example, you will need to prepare a visa processing fee of about BHD 27 , VFS logistics fee of around BHD 7 , and VFS service fee of BHD 5 to BHD 7 .

#5 – Wait for the approval stamp. This could take up to 15 working days , depending on the season. You will receive a message (SMS) when you’re visa is ready for pick up.

NOTE: Once you have received an approved visa stamp, it would be wise to proceed with your travel as planned. This will make the process easier when you apply to visit other Schengen countries in the future.

Major Schengen visa update for Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia and India

german tourist visa from bahrain

Under the new arrangement, nationals of Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Bahrain will be eligible for five-year multiple-entry Schengen visas

Marisha Singh

Passport holders from Bahrain, Oman and Saudi Arabia, are set to benefit from extended travel privileges as the European Union (EU) announced the issuance of five-year multiple-entry Schengen visas.

The announcement was made by Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, during the High-Level Forum on Regional Security and Cooperation held in Luxembourg.

He said, “I would like to welcome the adoption by the [European] Commission this morning of decisions that will allow to harmonise the rules on the issuing of multiple-entry visas for GCC countries.”

Borrell expressed the EU’s commitment to strengthening relations with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries by harmonising visa rules.

Schengen visa changes

Under the new arrangement, nationals of Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Bahrain will be eligible for five-year multiple-entry Schengen visas, allowing them to make multiple visits to Schengen Area countries within a calendar year.

However, travellers must adhere to the 90/180-day rule, limiting stays to a maximum of three months within any six-month period.

While specific details are yet to be officially released by EU authorities, it is anticipated that first-time applicants and eligible passport holders from the mentioned countries will benefit from the extended visa validity as well.

Notably, citizens of the UAE are currently the only GCC nationals who enjoy a visa-free entry to the Schengen Area, while discussions are ongoing between other GCC nations and the EU to further ease visa requirements.

Read: Visa-free travel to Schengen countries soon? GCC-EU talks see progress

Earlier this year, talks saw EU countries consider the lifting of visa requirements for nationals of Kuwait and Qatar based on several key criteria, as revealed in a recent report:

  • Irregular migration
  • Public policy and security
  • Economic benefits
  • EU relations with the countries

The European Union Commission’s assessment concluded that both Kuwait and Qatar present a low risk in terms of irregular immigration.

Should the European visa requirements for these GCC countries be lifted, travellers would be eligible for the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS).

Indian nationals benefit from new Schengen visa rule change

In addition to the visa changes for Gulf citizens, the EU has also adopted more favorable Schengen visa rules for Indian nationals.

Eligible Indian travellers with an established travel history and prior Schengen visa usage will now be granted multiple-entry visas with extended validity, starting from two years and potentially extending to five years, subject to passport validity.

Previously, the standard rules of the Visa Code applied.

New Schengen visa rules for Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain and India

T ravelling to Europe has become much more convenient for GCC and Indian visitors. The European Commission has approved new regulations for the issuance of Schengen visas to citizens of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Oman who live in their home countries.

Under the new system, Saudi, Bahraini and Omanis will now have access to multiple-entry visas, allowing them to travel to 25 out of the 27 EU countries using the same visa within five years.

This implementation has significantly simplified the process of obtaining a Schengen visa, making it much more convenient for eligible applicants, even first-time applicants. They can now look forward to receiving a multiple-entry visa that remains valid for up to five years, relieving them of the stress of frequent visa applications.

"The European Commission has adopted new rules for the issuance of Schengen visas for Saudi, Bahraini and Omani nationals residing in their home country. It is an important step promoting people-to-people contacts and facilitating exchanges between the EU and GCC citizens," the delegation of the European Union in GCC posted on X.

Kuwaitis can be issued with long-term, multi-entry Schengen visas valid for five years. UAE nationals enjoy visa-free travel to the Schengen nations, permitting stays of up to three months at a time. However, a Schengen visa is a must for UAE residents.

Additionally, the European Commission adopted specific rules on issuing multiple entry visas to Indians. Under the new regulations, Indian travellers are now eligible to obtain a two-year Schengen visa, a significant enhancement compared to the shorter validity periods previously offered.

To qualify for this extended visa, applicants must have obtained and used two Schengen visas within the last three years in accordance with the regulations. Upon successfully utilising the two-year visa, travellers can typically anticipate eligibility for a five-year Schengen visa, subject to the maintenance of sufficient passport validity.

This decision comes in the context of strengthened relations under the EU-India Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility, which seeks comprehensive cooperation on migration policy between the EU and India, with the facilitation of people-to-people contacts being a key aspect due to the importance of India as a partner for the EU.

These changes ease the visa application process and facilitate smoother travel experiences.

Schengen visas allow the holder to travel freely in the Schengen area for short stays of a maximum of 90 days in any 180-day period. The visas are not purpose-bound, but they do not grant the right to work. The Schengen area consists of 29 European countries (of which 25 are EU states): Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland and Sweden, along with Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.

What Else Should I Consider Before Visiting Bahrain?

Tourist Visa In Bahrain 3

Bahrain is an exquisite Middle Eastern commercial and tourist destination.

While Bahrainis welcome foreigners and visitors of different faiths, as in many other Middle Eastern countries, visitors must familiarize themselves with the country’s culture and local regulations to avoid offending their hosts.

  • Bahrain has a formal dress code.
  • Avoid breaching cultural and religious standards, and dress conservatively in public, just as you would in any other country with a Muslim majority.
  • Women should cover their shoulders, knees, and midriffs and avoid wearing anything that reveals their bodies. While men face fewer restrictions, wearing shorts in public is often considered inappropriate.

What Are The Required Documents To Apply?

  • Passport Scan. Make sure it is valid for at least 6 months, starting when you arrive in Bahrain.
  • Copy of your return flight ticket.
  • Copy of your hotel booking in Bahrain (if needed).
  • Copy of relative/friend’s ID reader (if needed).
  • Copy of your bank statements from the last three months.
  • Copy of at least 3 months valid GCC residence permit (if needed).
  • Copy of a valid visit visa to the UAE, UK, USA, KSA (excluding Hajj and Umrah visa), Schengen, or USA Green Card. (For certain nationalities.)

Sometimes, it is important to upload a few additional essential documents.

Additional Information

The Bahrain e-Visa allows for multiple entries.

  • The Bahrain e-Visa is valid for around 90 days from arrival, with a maximum stay of 30 days per entry.
  • If your visa is approved, you must use it within 30 days, or it will expire. When you enter the country, the validity of this visa will be recognized.
  • This visa allows you to visit family and engage in tourist and business activities.
  • You are not permitted to engage in remunerated activities (work) in Bahrain.
  • Check that your passport is valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Bahrain to apply.
  • When applying for this visa, applicants must be outside the Kingdom of Bahrain.
  • You will not require this visa if you are a citizen of the Golf Cooperation Council (Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, or the United Arab Emirates).
  • This Bahrain Tourist e-visa is also required for children.
  • You must enter Bahrain via an airport. This visa cannot be used to enter Bahrain via the King Fahad Causeway.
  • To depart Bahrain, you must have a valid/confirmed onward travel ticket.
  • Before you can apply for another visa, your current one must expire. It is important to note that visas are only issued one at a time.
