There are numerous options for getting from Vancouver Airport to Downtown Vancouver, ranging from public transit to taxis and private limousine services. We outline the various options below, starting with our #1 recommendation: Vancouver SkyTrain - Airport to Downtown. It is less expensive and faster than a taxi or limo.

Vancouver SkyTrain - Airport to Downtown

Ever since the 2010 Winter Olympics, Vancouver Airport transportation has been much easier, thanks to the Canada Line, an integral part the of Vancouver Skytrain System . Without transferring, you can get from Vancouver International Airport to Vancouver City Centre Station in just 24 minutes! The SkyTrain station is directly connected to the airport terminal. The modern air conditioned trains run along an elevated track and over a bridge before descending below grade for the rest of the trip into downtown Vancouver.

Canada Line trains operate at 6—7 minute intervals midday and peak hours, 12 minute intervals during the early morning and evening, dropping to 20 minutes as the night progresses. The first train departs YVR for Waterfront Station in downtown Vancouver at 5:10 AM; the last, at 12:57 AM.

An additional $5.00 is added to single ticket fares from Vancouver Airport, but you can avoid this by purchasing a Compass Card and loading it with a day pass or stored value at the start of your trip.

Fares can be purchased from ticket vending machines at the station entrance or at the 7-Eleven or Pharmasave store located on Level 1 of the domestic terminal.

If you are buying a single adult ticket you don't need to go to a ticket machine. Save time and go paperless: you can tap your contactless debit or credit card right at the fare gate. Interac, Amex, Mastercard, and Visa are accepted. It's a convenient and environment-friendly option for single travelers. For more information see the contactless payment section on our fares page.

Major transfer points include Bridgeport Station where you can transfer to Richmond BC or take an express bus to the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal and Waterfront Station where you can transfer to the Expo Line or connect to the SeaBus which crosses Vancouver Harbour to North Vancouver.

Getting from Vancouver Airport to Downtown by Taxi

There's a continuous queue of taxis waiting outside the arrivals level at YVR that will take you downtown, or nearly anywhere else you may wish to travel. Getting from Vancouver Airport to downtown by taxi is more expensive than the Canada Line, however, the price per person goes down when sharing a cab with additional passengers, becoming comparable when three or more are sharing.  It will usually take longer than the train, except late at night when traffic is light.

Be sure to ask your driver up front if you can pay by credit card (unless you plan to pay with cash).  There are frequent reports of taxi drivers not accepting credit cards, even though they are supposed to.

Taxi Fares from Vancouver Airport to Downtown

Taxi fares from Vancouver Airport are regulated by a zone system with fares ranging from $20 to $43. Trips to downtown Vancouver fall near the top end of the range — between $34 and $41 including GST. As of January 2020, UBER and Lyft have been approved to operate throughout Greater Vancouver.

Navigating from Vancouver International Airport (YVR) to the vibrant heart of downtown Vancouver was an integral part of my recent journey to this bustling west coast city.

Vancouver, known for its stunning natural beauty and cosmopolitan allure, offers a variety of efficient and user-friendly transportation options for this essential transit.

Here’s a comprehensive guide based on my firsthand experience, designed to help you choose the best mode of transportation according to your preferences, budget, and travel style.

SkyTrain – Canada Line

My Choice and Why : The Canada Line of the SkyTrain system was my top pick for transportation. Not only is it cost-effective and efficient, but it also provides a scenic route into the city.

The Canada Line directly connects YVR to downtown Vancouver, with a travel time of approximately 25 minutes to Waterfront Station, the line’s terminus that sits at the edge of downtown.

Experience : The process was straightforward. Signage within the airport guided me to the Canada Line station, located between the domestic and international terminals.

The trains run every 6 to 20 minutes, depending on the time of day. I purchased a Compass Card from the automated kiosks at the station, which also offered single-use tickets.

The fare from YVR to downtown varies depending on the time of day, with an additional AddFare for airport departures.

Riding the Canada Line provided a comfortable and quick entry into the city, offering glimpses of Vancouver’s diverse neighborhoods along the way.

Taxi Services

Overview : Taxis offer a direct and convenient way to get from YVR to downtown Vancouver. Taxi stands are well-marked and located just outside the arrivals area.

Experience : While I opted for the SkyTrain, I noticed that taxis were readily available, offering a hassle-free option for travelers.

The journey to downtown takes about 20 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic. Taxi fares are metered, with an approximate cost that varies but provides a straightforward, albeit more expensive, alternative to public transit.

For those traveling in groups or with significant luggage, a taxi could offer value through convenience and speed.

Ride-Sharing Services

Overview : Ride-sharing services, such as Uber and Lyft, are operational in Vancouver and available for pickups at YVR.

Experience : On a previous visit, I used a ride-sharing service for my transit needs. The pickup area for ride-sharing is clearly indicated at the airport.

The app provided an estimated fare and wait time, making it a convenient option for reaching downtown.

The cost is competitive with taxis and can be a preferred choice for its ease of use and the comfort of ride-sharing vehicles.

Car Rentals

Overview : For travelers preferring the flexibility of their own vehicle, several car rental agencies operate at YVR.

Experience : Car rental kiosks are located near the airport’s arrivals level. While I didn’t rent a car this trip, renting offers the freedom to explore Vancouver and its surroundings at your leisure.

Remember, downtown parking can be pricey and scarce, so consider this if planning to spend most of your time in the city center.

Airport Shuttles and Limousines

Overview : For a more luxurious or group-oriented approach, private shuttles and limousines are available for hire at YVR.

Experience : Although I did not personally use these services, they can be an excellent option for larger groups or those seeking a more upscale experience.

Booking in advance is advisable, ensuring your ride is ready upon arrival.

Tips for a Smooth Transit from YVR to Downtown Vancouver

• Plan According to Your Schedule : If arriving late at night or with tight time constraints, taxis or ride-sharing may be more reliable than public transit.
• Consider Your Luggage : The SkyTrain is convenient and efficient but navigating public transit with heavy luggage during peak hours can be challenging.
• Stay Informed : Check for any transit updates or changes in service, especially during holidays or significant events.
• Budget Accordingly : Choose the option that best fits your budget and travel needs. The SkyTrain offers great value, but taxis or ride-sharing provide added convenience.

How to get from YVR (Vancouver Airport) to downtown Vancouver

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is located approximately 12 km from downtown Vancouver. There are several easy transportation options available to get from the airport to the city centre.

Public Transit

The Canada Line is Vancouver’s rapid transit rail system that connects YVR to downtown Vancouver in under 30 minutes and to downtown Richmond in 18 minutes. Skytrain Trains leave the airport station approximately every seven minutes during most times of the day ( click here for a schedule and map ). The trip from YVR to downtown Vancouver takes only 26 minutes on a two-zone fare of $4.55, plus the $5.00 Canada Line YVR AddFare. The YVR AddFare fee is charged on tickets FROM YVR, but not on tickets TO YVR. You can buy a ticket at the station, or simply use any contactless credit/debit card to swipe in and out at the automatic gates. The YVR AddFare may be waived if you have a pre-purchased fare, e.g. a day pass or stored value on a Compass Card.

Taxis and Shuttles

Taxis are available at the taxi stands located at Level 2 Arrivals directly in front of Domestic Terminal and the International Terminal. A taxi from Vancouver International Airport to downtown Vancouver costs from CAD 38, excluding tips.

Courtesy shuttle buses provide transportation to many of the local hotels, Airport South, and YVR JetSet Parking. Follow the signs at Level 2 Arrivals to be directed to the appropriate pick-up location.

Several shuttle services are available from YVR to downtown Vancouver, including the Vancouver Airport Shuttle, which starts at CAD 15 per person.

Ride-sharing Services – Uber, Lyft, KABU

All three local ride-sharing services, Uber, Lyft and KABU are licensed to pick-up and drop off at YVR. Once you have ordered your car using the relevant app, proceed outside Level 2 Arrivals to the marked pick-up area. It is after the taxi area and clearly marked on green signs.

Car Rentals

Major car rental companies have desks at YVR, so hiring and returning your rental car is easy and convenient. The majority of well-known rental companies are located steps away from the terminal on the ground floor of the parking area. Some smaller providers are a bus-ride away. Remember to include time in your schedule for pick-up/drop-off as you may need to take a short shuttle bus ride to the rental station. Find out which is where by clicking here .

The Canada Line Skytrain is by far the most convenient and affordable option to get from Vancouver Airport to downtown Vancouver. If for other reasons you need a taxi, shuttle or car rental, those are available too.

Getting from Vancouver International Airport to Downtown

Public transportation

Both the International and Domestic terminals are served by the YVR–Airport Station of the Canada Line . To get there from the Domestic terminal, go to level 3 and walk towards the Link Building (which is located between the two terminals)  and then follow the signs towards the Canada Line.

From the International terminal, after clearing customs and immigration, walk toward the exit to the International Arrivals Greeting Area. Exit the building and follow the signs marked Canada Line, towards the parking garage. Just before the garage entrance, take the escalator up to the platform. The station is pretty well-marked and it would be difficult to get to lost, but look for one of the green-jacketed YVR greeters throughout the airport if you need help.

Once on the platform, you’ll need to buy a ticket using the vending machine: cash and credit cards are accepted. If you’re headed downtown, it’ll be a 2-zone ticket, which costs $8.75.  Trains run every 6-10 minutes from 5:10am until 12:57 am.

For your return trip:  if you plan on riding public transportation (bus, Seabus, or SkyTrain) several times on your trip, opt for a book of 10 (2 zone) Fare Saver tickets for $31.50,  for a per-trip cost of only $3.15.

Shuttle buses

Courtesy shuttles service several Richmond hotels and two Vancouver Airport hotels. Aeroshuttle also provides shuttle service to downtown hotels starting at $15.50 per adult (one way), which is useful if you will be bringing a lot of bags and don’t want to hassle with public transportation, or if your hotel is far from a Canada Line station. No reservation is required; just head to the ground transportation area (level 2) of either terminal.

Taxis are a convenient way to travel from the airport to downtown, but if you’re on your own, they are the most expensive option. The fare will be between $28 and $32, so it’s a good deal if you are traveling with a few other people, or are arriving or departing very late at night.

One of the first things you need to know when you are planning a trip to British Columbia is likely how to get from Vancouver Airport to downtown Vancouver. Whether you are coming into Vancouver before your Alaska cruise or are coming into the city for a holiday, there are several ways to get into the city. Vancouver International Airport is not actually in Vancouver, it is in nearby Richmond, but as distance goes, just a few kilometers from the city of Vancouver

This post will give you all of the options when it comes to traveling from Vancouver Airport to downtown Vancouver. There are several ways to get into the city centre from YVR including renting a car, taking a limo, a taxi, Uber, Lyft or public transit.

How to get from Vancouver Airport to Vancouver

Many major car rental companies have desks at YVR, so hiring and returning your rental car is easy and convenient. You should book your car in advance, gone are the days of choosing a car on arrival. If you are planning on heading outside of downtown Vancouver, a rental car is the easiest way to get around.

If you’re taking a taxi from YVR to Vancouver after arrival, use one of the taxi stands located on Level 2. Taxis operating from the airport are licensed and will use a  zoned fare rate  that will depend on your destination.

Uber and Lyft

Metro Vancouver has two main ride-hailing apps: Uber and Lyft. However there are more than two in the area. Besides these two, KABU is also authorized to pick up passengers at Vancouver Airport and take them into the city (or anywhere else they want to go).

There are three places to get picked up at YVR, they include International Arrivals, Level 2, Domestic Arrivals, Level 2, and South Terminal. 

When should I request a ride? Ride App drivers have a dedicated waiting area at YVR, which is a short distance from the terminal. Please wait to collect your luggage before requesting a ride. 

Limo and Private Car Service

When flying into YVR, many companies offer pre-arranged meet-and-greet services or simply use YVR’s official licensed limousine company. you can grab a limo on arrival (subject to availability)

Public Transit

Vancouver does not have a subway, but it does have rapid transit, and most of it is the SkyTrain. The Canada Line portion provides rapid rail service linking Vancouver International Airport to downtown Vancouver. Trains leave the airport station approximately every seven minutes during most times of the day. There are 16 stops along the line, with downtown Vancouver stops including Yaletown, Vancouver City Centre and Waterfront. The trip from Vancouver Airport to downtown Vancouver takes less than 30 minutes and costs approx $9.25

Shopping opportunities range from 711 and Hudson News outlets to designer brands such as Cartier, Bulgari, Burberry, and Gucci. Pick up local chocolates from Rogers’ (after security in Domestic) or visit iStore for travel gadgets.

Make a night of it and stay at the Fairmont Vancouver Airport , a soundproofed luxury hotel and spa that is situated in the US section of Main Terminal—perfect for an early morning flight or a late night arrival.

Food and Drink Options

There are various places to eat and drink before and after security in the Main Terminal. Food on the Fly allows you to take restaurant meals and snacks onto the flight. Fast food options such as A & W, Starbucks, Subway, and Tim Hortons can be found on both sides of security. For a taste of local food, try Stanley Park Taphouse in the Domestic Terminal after security or Pajo’s Fish & Chips before security in the International Terminal before security. For a special treat, visit Globe @YVR inside the Fairmont Vancouver Airport for a romantic meal of local West Coast cuisine before take off.

The Flying Beaver Bar & Grill at Airport South, near the Floatplane Facility, is a local institution that’s well worth a visit if you’re traveling from here.

Parking/Car Rental

Hourly, daily, weekly parking options are available next to Main Terminal at Gateway Valet or the Parkade, with other slightly cheaper options such as jetSet Parking and Value Long Term Parking just a short shuttle ride away. Parking is also available at Airport South and free electric vehicle charging stations can be found at all parking lots.

Main Terminal has onsite car rental through National, Alamo, Hertz, Dollar Thrifty, Avis, and Budget (as well as members-only Zipcar). Off-site rentals (a 10-15 minute shuttle ride away from the Courtesy Shuttle Zone) include Enterprise Rent-a-Car, Discount Car and Truck Rentals, Routes Car Rental, and local car shares Car2Go and Evo CarShare.

Getting to and From YVR

Getting to or from the Vancouver International Airport (YVR) from downtown Vancouver is about a 20-minute car ride and not much more by public transport thanks to the Canada Line, a monorail-type train that is part of Vancouver's efficient and reasonably priced public transportation system. You can conveniently access trains from both the International and Domestic Terminals and get to various locations in and around Vancouver.

Vancouver is a progressive town with a commitment to sustainable living—and its commitment to excellent public transport is part of its green charm.

Nevertheless, if private transport is more your speed, lots of other options are available from downtown.

• Public transit: The Canada Line has made getting to and from the Vancouver International Airport by public transportation easy and affordable. This rapid rail service connects Metro Vancouver's busiest north-south corridor, linking downtown to Richmond and Vancouver International Airport. Access to the Canada Line is from within the airport terminal.
• Taxis: Taxis servicing the Vancouver International Airport follow a set-rate fare zone system for reliable pricing. A taxi ride from the airport to central Vancouver takes about 30 mins and costs between Cdn $20 to $40 depending on the zone you're traveling to. A $3 to $10 tip on top of this is standard. Taxi fares to the airport are based on the meter and from downtown Vancouver, including from the cruise ship terminal, are about $35.

✗  Don't worry about the rain (…too much)

Contrary to its "Raincouver" reputation, Vancouver is one of the driest cities in the country from June through September.

It does rains frequently during all other months, but rarely so hard that you can't walk wherever you're going and enjoy the outdoors. For a few years while growing up in Vancouver, I didn't even own a rain jacket!

✓ Keep in mind that Vancouver is tiny

People who visit Vancouver are always surprised by how compact the city is.

To walk from one extreme corner of downtown to the other only takes forty minutes. And it's mostly flat. So if you're in the middle of downtown nothing is more than an easy twenty-minute walk away.

You definitely shouldn't spend all your time downtown, though, but even then every neighborhood's within biking distance, some are walkable, and they're never more than 40 minutes away by bus.

✗  Don't bother trying to use Uber Do bother!

Finally, in January 2020, seven years after Uber first tried to enter Vancouver but was quickly given the boot, ridesharing is here. Lyft, Uber, and other companies have been the go-ahead to start running so people can finally get around Vancouver like they do pretty much everywhere else in the world.

✗ Don't rent a car

Vancouver is tiny, difficult and expensive to park in, and easy to get around by foot, bike, or public transit, so a rental car is not the best way to explore the city.

✗ Don't be afraid to walk at night

Like any city, Vancouver has its share of opportunistic criminals, so don't be a complete idiot and wave your valuables around while drunkenly stumbling down dark alleys.

But as long as you don't do that, you'll be fine.

Vancouver is super safe night and day, no matter which part of town you go.

✓ Pick a conveniently-located base

The most convenient place to stay for getting around Vancouver is the West End.

It’s a relaxed but densely-populated local area within walking distance of everything downtown and close to the SkyTrain to the airport.

Specifically, look to stay in the square between Davie, Denman, Robson, and Burrard. The Burrard is a good bet for a funky and perfectly-located hotel.

✗  Don't ever get turned around

If you get spun around and forget which way's which, look for the mountains. That way's north.

✓ Beware of Skid Row

The area between Gastown and Chinatown, centered on the intersection of Hastings and Main, is called the Downtown Eastside.

For fellow fans of the TV show The Wire , it's Vancouver’s version of Hamsterdam . It’s where all the city’s—and really much of Canada’s—drug addicts and untreated mentally ill people are concentrated.

If you go, you will see people injecting themselves with drugs in broad daylight and high out of their minds, screaming at everyone and anyone.

✗  Don't avoid Skid Row, though

The area is heavily policed and totally safe.

We actually recommend walking through it once to experience the gritty underbelly of beautiful Vancouver.

Bonus fun fact:

The term skid row, which now refers to an impoverished urban area, originates from Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. In Vancouver's early days, that's where they once skidded, i.e. dragged, logs.

✗  Don't expect to do a day trip to Vancouver Island

Many visitors we've met think Vancouver Island is super close to Vancouver and an easy day trip.

A couple of them pulled off a day trip nonetheless, but that's crazy. If you want to go to Victoria or Vancouver Island, go for a few days. Or fly.

✓ Take the SkyTrain to and from the airport

The SkyTrain, Vancouver's light rail / subway system, directly connects the airport and downtown. Often, it's faster than taxis and it's cheaper for individuals and couples.

For groups of three or more, a taxi costs about the same.

✓ Use public transit

  Many tourists we've hosted during our time as Airbnb hosts, Americans especially, tend to disregard public transit as an option because back home it's dirty, unreliable, and inconvenient.

It's the opposite here in Vancouver.

Everyone rides public transit in Vancouver and you should too.

✓ Know how to pay for public transit before you ride

Vancouver's transit system accepts contactless Visa and Mastercard credit cards and Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay.

If you don't have such "high-tech" payment methods, you'll need to pay exact change ($2.95 for one zone).

Your best bet if you're staying longer or planning to use public transit a lot is to get a Compass Card . For $6 (refundable only at the Stadium-Chinatown station) it gets you about $0.50 off each ride and can be prepaid or linked to your credit card for automatic reloading.

✗  Don't throw out your transit receipt

You can transfer and ride on Vancouver's public transit system as many times as you want during the ninety minutes after you pay.

It's more than ninety minutes, really, because as long as you're on the bus/train/ferry when you're ninety minutes expires, you're fine.

✓ Keep transit zones in mind

If you take the SkyTrain or the SeaBus outside of Vancouver's city limits, you'll need to pay extra for going into different zones. Check this map  to be sure.

Note that all buses are one zone, so you don't have to pay extra for crossing zones when you're taking the bus.

✗  Don't be afraid to ask the bus drivers

Unlike in many other cities, Vancouver's bus drivers are generally friendly and helpful, so don't be scared to ask them for directions or to let you know when it's your stop.

You can even ask them for directions if you're not taking the bus.

✓ DEFINITELY Rent a bike if it's nice out

Vancouver’s so bike-friendly that car-lovers always complain that bike lanes are taking over the city.

You can’t beat ’em, so join ’em.

The cheapest way to do so is to use Vancouver’s shared bike system,  Mobi , which costs about $10 a day.

For bigger bike rides, like our top-recommended route that we share in our post on  7 Cool Things to Do in Vancouver , rent a better bike for $30 to $50 a day.

✓ Put your bike on the bus to really get out there

If you rent a bike (which we highly recommend) don't be scared of putting it onto the racks on the front of busses or taking it on the SkyTrain. This allows you to cover more ground with one-way bike routes.

✓ Lock your bike just about anywhere

There are tons of dedicated bike parking spots along the streets of Vancouver, but if none are nearby don't hesitate to lock your bike to the nearest sign, parking meter, tree, or whatever looks secure and doesn't get in the way of pedestrians and traffic.

✗  Don't ever leave your bike unlocked

Bike theft is a huge problem in Vancouver.

To avoid being a victim, don't ever leave your bike unlocked and out of your sight and don't leave your bike locked overnight on the street unless all the wheels and the seat are locked too.

Getting Around Vancouver Quick F.A.Q

It's not as quick and easy as Uber, which the taxi mafia has successfully kept out of town, but you can use an imitation app called eCab . You can also try your luck at hailing a cab on the street, but we wouldn't recommend it unless you're right downtown by Granville and Georgia streets. Otherwise you might be stuck waiting a long time.

There are two private companies, False Creek Ferries and the Aquabus, that run similar, competing services. They are the most convenient—and quirky—way to get between downtown, Olympic Village, and Granville Island.

We wanted to stay in the West End near Stanley Park, but also wanted to visit the Richmond area for the Asian food and tea. We are not planning to rent a car. Google maps seems to estimate close to an hour using public transportation from West End to Richmond. Any recommendations for better/faster way to get from West End to Richmond?

Hey D.M. What makes it take so long is that the West End and the main dining areas of Richmond aren't right on the SkyTrain. If you want to speed up your trip without taking a taxi the whole way, you could a taxi to/from the stations. The SkyTrain ride itself is fast, 20min.

Hi Lotus. Hard to say without more info. Generally, I'd suggest sticking close to the SkyTrain—anywhere along the line that interests you and fits your budget—so that you can get there and back quickly and easily.

Our family of 4 are avoid bikers and want to explore the city with our own bikes (not rentals). Is there a good hotel that is bike friendly? Is it generally ok to bring our bikes in the hotel room at night?

I'm arriving at the airport in Vancouver on Aug 1st. We'll be driving and we're heading to the Sunshine Coast and beyond. Looking at a map, the most direct route through Vancouver is the 99 (Granville St). But it looks like it won't be fast. Is there a quicker/better way to bypass the city and get to Horseshoe Bay? Hi Tom. Yeah, you may be faster taking SE Marine along the south edge of the city to Highway 1, and circling Vancouver on the highway. Depends on traffic, though.

I use a fold up wheelchair, which my kind husband pushes, to get around and visit museums. Can I take this fold-up wheelchair (non motorized) onto the public transportation buses? Thank you for your thoughts!

I just had a very poor experience in Vancouver. I drove up from Bellingham WA to attend a meeting at a west side library. No parking at all, for any price. I would be happy to use transit, but I had no idea where to park and ride. The only suggestion I received was to park at White Rock, but the estimated transit time was an hour and a half. Suggestion: recommend places where people who arrive by car can connect with the city.

Getting Around Vancouver, Canada

The best ways to get around Vancouver are on foot, by bike and via public transportation. Many major attractions and popular neighborhoods are located within walking distance of one another in this condensed city. However, if you feel your feet growing weary, the TransLink system – which includes the SkyTrain, the SeaBus ferry and numerous bus routes – is both manageable and affordable.

Getting into town from the Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is also easy: you can use the Canada Line rail system or you can hop in a cab. Taxis fares from the airport to downtown Vancouver cost roughly CA$32 to CA$39 (about $25 to $31). The airport is located about 10 miles southwest of the city center. If you've chosen to fly into the Seattle–Tacoma International Airport (SEA), you'll find plenty of car rental companies there, too. You can also take a  shuttle  from Sea-Tac to several locations in Vancouver: Ticket fees vary depending on your drop-off location.
