15 YouTube Channels to Subscribe To for Travel Inspiration

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

Our relationship with YouTube is still in the honeymoon phase. Although we love seeing movies in the theaters and on Netflix, it wasn’t until recently that we discovered the joy of binge-watching YouTube videos. Yes, we’ve always had a YouTube account but we weren’t active for the longest time.

As it turns out: YouTube is a great source of travel inspiration . The Google-owned platform is bursting with all sorts of travel videos — both informative and inspirational, both heavily-produced and rough-and-raw, both local and international. Whether you need help planning a trip, you simply want to be blown away by epic shots, or you simply want to be entertained, you’ll find a channel that suits your needs and wants.

In this post, we’re rounding up some of our favorite travel channels on YouTube!

Before we proceed, shameless plug! Please subscribe to our own YouTube channel , called Vins and Yosh ! Our channel is more on the informative end of the spectrum, so if you’re after destination guides and visa application tips, go ahead and show us some love! And since we’re currently stuck at home, we have a lot of time to edit videos so expect more soon! ✅ SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL HERE!

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

INFORMATIVE CHANNELS

When planning a trip, we usually consult written guides, not YouTube. But there are instances when words and still images alone are not enough. Many times, videos provide a more experiential peek into what to expect (how the place actually looks and how certain scams work) or how to do certain things (like how to use public transportation in destinations with challenging language barriers).

The following channels are not just inspiring but also incredibly informative!

Rick Steves’ Europe

Rick Steves is one of the most trusted names in the travel sector, especially when it comes to Europe. Whenever I’m Europe-bound, I first check if Rick Steves has a feature on the place I’m visiting. His videos are not particularly detailed but they give a useful overview of the destination including a quick history and best things to do.

Honest Guide

Love, love, love this channel. Unlike most travel channels that tend to highlight only the sunny side, Honest Guide prepares travelers for both the positive and the negative — scams, tourist traps, cautionary tales — and suggests better alternatives or other tips. Their content is focused mostly on Prague and Europe in general, but many of these tips apply to other destinations too.

Vagabrothers

Vagabrothers is a channel by brothers Alex and Marko Ayling, English teachers turned travel vlogging legends. At first look, their videos follow the typical vlog format, but as you watch longer, you’ll realize that they are surprisingly packed with useful trivia and helpful tips.

Geography Now

And oh, before planning, watch Geography Now’s feature on the country you’re headed to. Fine, this isn’t really a travel channel, but it gives basic details you need to know about countries, which can influence how you want to approach your trip.

PINOY VLOGS

I decided to have a separate category for Pinoy channels because (1) a huge fraction of our readers are Filipinos, which means (2) their content may be more relatable since we have shared experiences and our own sets of challenges (like visa frustrations)!

I love these channels because they are also very informative. And although these are underrated personal vlogs, they shift the spotlight from themselves to the destination, injecting more substance to the spectacle.

INTERNATIONAL VLOGS

If there’s something I have learned from my years of travel, it’s that the world is full of all types of people and every single one of us has a place in it. It always blows my mind how one group can find great joy in something that another considers mundane, or how a place affects people differently. It’s amazing to see the world through various points of views, which is why I enjoy watching vlogs by people from all walks of life, from various corners of the world.

In this category, I compiled my favorite personal travel vlogs. I met with most of these in person, and it was a pleasure seeing how passionate they are with what they do both on and off-cam.

22 Best Travel Apps Every Traveler Should Know About

From tracking flight delays, finding last-minute accommodations, and even locating the nearest public restroom, these are the most helpful travel apps to download before you travel.

travel guides application videos

Using the right travel apps can help you save both time and money , while making the journey much less stressful . Many of these apps also provide local recommendations and hidden gems tourists don't often get to see — and some are completely free.

Whether you're looking for an app that will give you discounts for popular local events, offer a last-minute booking at a fraction of the price, or help you breeze through the airport , these are the 22 best travel apps to download before your next trip.

Citymapper helps travelers find the speediest route to their destination, providing step-by-step instructions on where to find the nearest bus and train stations. You'll be able to see when the next arrivals are, and real-time routing means you'll get updates every minute. The app also has a chat feature that allows you to update friends and family on your E.T.A. wherever you are.

Available on iOS and Android .

PackPoint takes the hassle out of packing by creating a customized list of what you'll need for your getaway. Enter your destination, travel dates, length of stay, and activities that might require special gear, like hiking or swimming, and the app will create a custom packing list you can save for future use. Besides checking weather conditions for you, the app also allows users to share their packing lists with fellow travelers.

The beauty of Rebtel is you don't need an internet connection to call friends and family back home. The app connects to local phone lines to provide you with cheap calls in 51 countries around the world without having to deal with the hassle of getting a local SIM card or racking up your phone bill.

If you're looking to get outdoors, this app will provide you with the area's best hiking, biking, and running trails. In addition to details on length, starting location, and trail quality, AllTrails includes reviews and photos from a community of hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. You'll find useful information like what to pack, obstacles you'll find along the route, and the best scenic spots to check out.

If you find yourself in the middle of a long layover, Dayuse can get you into a hotel room for a few hours for up to 75 percent less than what the typical overnight rate would be. The app features 5,000 hotels in 23 countries, and allows you to make free cancellations at the last minute, in case you manage to catch an earlier flight.

Selections include everything from business hotels to wellness accommodations, with payments made directly when you arrive. You also get full use of the hotel's amenities for the duration of your stay.

The prices of flights can fluctuate, making it tricky to decide if you should book right away or hold off. That's where Hopper comes in, predicting the best time to find the cheapest fares, saving up to 40 percent. The app also has a price-monitoring feature so that you can select a particular flight and receive alerts if the price drops. Through Hopper, users can also compare the prices and amenities of more than 250 airlines and get alerts about airfare flash sales.

RV Parks & Campgrounds

This camping app helps you locate prime RV parks, campgrounds, rest areas, and gas stations across North America. With more than 40,000 facilities, the app sorts locations based on ratings and includes both privately-owned RV parks and public parks to choose from.

Nike Training Club

Hitting the gym while you're traveling can be tough, but with Nike Training Club , you'll feel like you have a personal trainer right in your pocket. That's because you can access hundreds of free workouts from Nike Master Trainers and celebrities like Kevin Hart, Serena Williams, and Cristiano Ronaldo. Audio and video clips help you make sure you're on top of your technique, while personalized training plans will keep you on track.

If you don't have much time to spare at the airport, Grab allows you to check out what food selections are near your gate, and gives you the option to pre-order your meal so you can pick it up on the way. The app currently operates at over 60 airports worldwide, giving you plenty of bites to choose from on your next trip.

GasBuddy is the app you'll want if you're taking a road trip. GasBuddy tracks down where to find the cheapest gas prices, allowing you to filter by price, location, brand, and amenities. It also provides you with deals at nearby convenience stores and price hike alerts so you can nail down the best prices every time.

Want to know what local events are taking place at your destination? Headout will show you the top attractions, shows, tours, and experiences in popular cities like New York, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Orlando, Hawaii, Dubai, and more.

Activities range from catching a Broadway show, yoga in the hills, or taking a helicopter tour, with exclusive last-minute offers that can be up to 80 percent off.

If you need to access the internet during your travels, chances are you'll have to connect to public Wi-Fi, which can be sketchy. TunnelBear allows you to connect privately and securely by providing you a VPN (virtual private network) that will encrypt your browsing data to keep your information hidden from hackers and advertisers. The app comes with 500MB of free browsing data each month, or you can opt for unlimited data at a low monthly rate.

Hostelworld

Hostelworld is where you'll find more than 17,000 hostels, hotels, B&B's, and communal spaces in 178 countries. The app is great for solo travelers looking to meet fellow vacationers during their trip, including a Noticeboard that highlights events and meetups, and a translator that will help you communicate in up to 43 languages.

WeatherBug provides forecasts for millions of locations around the world, with current, hourly, and even 10-day options. The app also has specific weather maps to track everything from lightning and wind to pressure and humidity, and makes staying on top of changes to the weather easy with instant alerts.

Eatwith allows you to dine with locals, in their homes, all over the world. Menus are posted for you to see, while hosts will typically list what they cook, the languages they speak, and any alcohol pairings they'll be serving. Not only does the app give you a chance to meet locals and get superb dining recommendations, but it also allows you to enjoy a high-quality meal for less than what you'd typically pay at a restaurant.

Available on iOS and Android.

Trying to locate a public restroom can be tricky, especially in a new destination. That's where Flush comes in. The app has a database of more than 200,000 toilets, and quickly provides travelers with nearby bathrooms. You can search without an internet connection, and the app will also notify you if a restroom requires a fee.

While banks may charge you a fee for transferring money abroad, Wise allows you to make a transfer based on real-time currency exchanges, so you can send money at rates the company says are up to eight times cheaper than what you'd find at traditional banks.

TripIt makes it easy to put together a cohesive travel itinerary. Simply forward your confirmation emails, like your hotel and flight reservations, or your rental car reservation, and TripIt will build a full itinerary to help you stay organized with all of your plans.

With real-time alerts, you'll know if your flight is delayed or canceled, while the flight finder can help you book a new option should a cancellation occur.

Another good app for the road, Waze gives you community-based data about traffic jams, and information to locate points of interest like the cheapest gas stations and the fastest routes to your destination. Live maps include voice-guided navigation to easily guide you.

Xe provides live exchange rates and charts to keep you on top of money matters during your travels, easily allowing you to choose between different currencies you'd like to convert. It also has a rate alert so that you can monitor your favorite currencies — and it can be used offline.

Timeshifter

If you're sick of the jet lag battle that inevitably comes with travel, check out Timeshifter , an app that helps you to avoid jet lag long before your flight departs. Thanks to neuroscience research on circadian rhythms and sleep, the app provides personalized recommendations that take into account your age, gender, typical sleep patterns, and specifics about your trip. The app will tell you when you should avoid or seek daylight, and when you should stay awake or take a nap. The result? A gentle jet lag experience, which translates to more time exploring your destination.

FlightAware

If you have a tight connection or are picking up friends or family from the airport, look to FlightAware for help. The app tracks flights in real time, so you can see exactly where the aircraft is at any given moment. In addition to providing arrivals and delays, you can also see if weather will have any affect on certain locations.

7 Useful Apps Every Traveler Should Know About

By Harrison Pierce

Technology continues to make travel easier for millions of people around the globe. New apps offer travelers fresh ways to research a destination, connect with fellow globetrotters, communicate with locals, and track their flights. As a full-time digital nomad , I’ve learned the importance of having the right tools at your disposal when on the road.

Over the past few years, I’ve visited dozens of countries, flown hundreds of thousands of miles, and tested countless apps to find the ones that prove to be the most helpful. And while tools like Meetup, Google Maps, Google Translate, currency converters, and vacation rental , airline, and hotel–specific apps are in fact indispensable on most trips, I find that many of the best travel apps are still undiscovered by my fellow travelers.

Below, seven travel apps that make life on the go markedly easier (and more fun), from real-time flight trackers to photo-sharing gems—all of these apps are free, but some have paid pro versions worth considering. Don’t think these apps are only for full-time travelers—they prove useful for every type of traveler, whether you're in a brand-new destination or back for a return visit.

Discover the best apps for travelers:

Apps for flying, apps for exploring, apps for photo sharing.

Image may contain: Aircraft, Airliner, Airplane, Transportation, Vehicle, and Flight

My favorite app on this list is Flighty, a must-have for any frequent flier . The free version is fantastic, but I recommend splurging for the premium version, which gives you even more useful information and comes at a reasonable cost of $48 per year. The functionality it provides more than justifies the price.

The free version allows you to input all future flights plus past journeys you've taken within the last year. It provides updated information if any schedule changes occur to upcoming flights and allows you to track all the miles you’ve flown in one place.

The other main benefit is that it allows you to share your flight information with friends and family members who are also on Flighty. They will receive real-time updates about your flight without you having to text them. My parents love to make sure I’m safe so they appreciate getting detailed information about my travels—even while I’m in the air.

Image may contain: Gun, Weapon, Shooting, and Spiral

Flightradar24 is a favorite app among fellow aviation geeks. It lets you track almost any aircraft you see in the air throughout the day or night. You can track your own flight, a friend's flight, or any plane you see in real-time. It shares plenty of cool data, like the altitude, speed, arrival and departure airports and times, and tail number.

Image may contain: Logo, and First Aid

There are tons of eSIM apps on the market, but Airalo is probably my favorite, with digital SIM cards available for dozens of countries. I find it to be the most reliable and offers the best data packages. It can be a little pricey, but it is the best option if you’re only taking short trips. Holafly is another eSIM app that offers unlimited data and works well, but I find the app to be much more glitchy than Airalo and would recommend using the desktop version.

Image may contain: Symbol, First Aid, Text, and Logo

This one is for the planner of the group. Wanderlog merges the best of a bunch of different apps into one. Imagine an app that lets you plan a trip with ease: collaborate with friends as if you’re on Google Docs, manage expense tracking like Splitwise, and have a central place for your reservations, checklists, and more. Tripit is a similar travel planner app, so you can download both and get a feel for which interface you like better.

Image may contain: Paper, and Ice

Been allows you to track the countries you’ve visited and make a wish list of places you can’t wait to cross off your travel bucket list . It gives you information like the percentage of the globe you’ve been to and shows you a world map of your trips. It’s always fun to add in a new country whenever I reach my destination.

Image may contain: Sign, Symbol, Road Sign, and Weapon

This app was introduced to me by fellow nomads I met at a cafe in Montevideo, Uruguay . It automatically tracks your route across the world, allowing you to quickly upload pictures throughout your travels that can be viewed by anyone who has access to your profile. It’s an excellent way to share important moments with loved ones without needing to send photos to each person individually. Users can also create easily accessible guides filled with up-to-date information to help you plan your own trip.

Image may contain: Logo, and Disk

Steller is another app that a friend recently introduced me to, and I’ve quickly fallen in love with it. It uses a combination of AI and user experiences to help you plan trips around the globe. From recommendations of things to see, like the Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires or the Royal Palace of Naples, to full guidebooks created by users, you can get inspired, book experiences, and discover hidden gems within this app.

This Company Will Pay You $4,550 Per Month To Move To Iceland & Travel All Summer Long

Do you want to travel the world with your BFF this summer and get paid to do it? Well, I might have just found the best summer job for you. (You can thank me later.) WOW Air is trying to hire a Travel Agent, and they're offering the chosen candidate the ultimate travel experience this summer. TBH, it's giving me serious wanderlust. If hired, the budget Icelandic airline will move you to Iceland for the summer and pay you thousands of dollars per month to travel the world. What are you waiting for? Here’s how to apply for WOW Air's Travel Guide position . If you're chosen, you'll have the summer of a lifetime.

Time to brush off the ol’ resume and get your application ready, because WOW Air wants to hire you as their latest and greatest digital travel content creator. In order to apply for the three-month summer job , you’ll need to create a short video travel guide of your hometown, and then upload it to your application . It sounds easy enough, so grab your bestie and hit the town. The application closes on Monday, May 14.

Are you ready for your mission? If you are selected for the job, you’ll move into a fully-furnished apartment in downtown Reykjavík, Iceland for 10 weeks, starting Friday, June 1. The low-cost carrier will pay you and a buddy $4,550 per month (per person), according to Thrillist. They'll also cover the cost of sending you to a total of eight domestic and international locations for 2-4 days at a time . It's not too shabby, considering you’ll get the opportunity to visit a handful of WOW Air's destinations around the world. If you’re a social media pro (let's face it, I know you are), this job will be a walk in the park for you. TBH, it probably won't be too different than documenting your usual vacation with friends.

Do you think you and your BFF are up for the challenge? Some of the job responsibilities including creating vlogs for each destination, uploading Instagram stories full of useful travel tips, taking pictures of your experiences, and creating any other types of engaging travel content you can think of to create the ultimate digital travel guide for others. The winner will be announced on Friday, May 18 on WOW Air social media platforms, so make sure you’re following along. If you are chosen, you will have just two short weeks to pack your bags and prepare to jet set on June 1.

Make sure you review the terms and conditions before applying for the job. I've already gone through them, so here are a few things to note if you want to be considered as a serious candidate:

  • You must have an active Facebook account.
  • You must be in good physical and mental health.
  • You must be fluent in the English language.

If you want to see the world and make some money while doing it, this is your shot. My advice to you is this: Don’t wait until the last minute to apply to this once-in-a-lifetime position. WOW Air wants you to carefully edit your submission video, meaning you should probably give it some thought and creative flair. Now’s your chance to show off your favorite local ramen spot, that super trendy neighborhood coffee shop you always hit up before work, and your favorite community park to kick back and relax with a good book.

This might be the best job opportunity I’ve ever come across. Just remember, you’ll have to do your part — because after all, it is a job.

How to Make a Travel Guide App

The travel industry is traditionally one of the most profitable to build a business in. Before the global Covid-19 crisis, the travel industry had been growing above global GDP for 9 years straight.

While that came to a halt in 2020-2021, it's back. People are traveling again, exploring new places and enjoying the benefits travel offers to the mind, body and soul.

With the world back to normal, it's a great time to build tools, websites and startups that cater to travelers. This post will show you how. Read on to learn how to build a travel app, and earn your slice of the massive travel and tourism industry.

Why Travel App Development is So Profitable Today

Countless digital tools exist to help people plan and take trips. Yet there's still room in the market for more.

If you're considering this as a business venture, you should be looking to build for mobile. Think about it - not many people take their laptops away on holiday with them – but they all take their smartphones.

People also spend most of their internet time through mobile, so that’s where they’ll be when they’re planning and researching their trip.

Consider this:

  • 77% of travelers use mobile apps to book and pay for flights
  • 65% of tourists are open to using chat platforms to plan or book trips
  • 80% of tourists use apps to research their upcoming trips

Source- Mobile Travel Trends

This is on top of trends that show more and more people using smartphones in general to go online. And 90% of our time spent online on our mobile devices is spent using apps.

The travel app market itself is massive - with top players making more than $1 billion in revenue each year. But don't worry about the prospect of trying to compete with heavyweights like Booking, Expedia and AirBnb. There are plenty of opportunities to niche down and find your lane in this huge market which, by definition, is a global market.

A simple travel guide app is a great way to enter a profitable niche, and a market that's not going to slow down any time soon.

Travel App Examples

If you want some inspiration on travel apps, here you go. These two examples show what's possible with a travel app, what kind of travel app features you may want to include in your app, and what it takes to launch a successful travel mobile app.

tripwolf

Based on a very popular travel guide site, the Tripwolf app gives users more than 600 travel guides in several languages, along with premium tips and photos from Fodor’s Travel and Marco Polo.

Trip wolf also has a lot of useful map integrations that help users with navigating on bike or foot, as well as the best local attractions and sightseeing spots.

The app has handy phrasebooks in 18 languages and lets users directly book flights, accommodation, and tours.

This travel app has certainly been a success, with more than 10 million downloads and generally positive reviews.

How to Build a Travel App with MobiLoud

Ready to start, and launch your own travel app? There's no better time than right now. We'll help you out with some tips on building a user-friendly travel app, as well as showing you the most effective option for travel mobile app development - that doesn't require you to know anything at all about coding.

Must-Have Features for Your Mobile Travel App

If you're going to launch a successful travel app, here are some things you'll want to have.

People love to see rich pictures and images when thinking about their travels. They want to really imagine themselves in various exciting destinations, so help them to do so. Make sure your travel app supports photo galleries and if possible, video content too.

Great Content Navigation

Travel guides have centered around written content for a long time. Make sure your app provides easy navigation through different topics and a convenient scroll through your articles and guides.

Location-based Services

Unless your app is just about one neighborhood, users will be spread about in different places. So to give them the most relevant recommendations and content it’s helpful to know where they are. Make sure your app supports location services!

Social Sharing

Most travelers love to share things they’ve done and places they’ve been with fellow travelers, friends, and family! Make this easy for them by integrating social sharing into your app.

Offline Viewing

Sometimes it’s tricky to get internet in a foreign country, not to mention on a plane or the underground. Make things easier for your travel app users by supporting offline viewing and allowing them to download their favorite content to their devices.

The Best Option for Travel App Development

Building a mobile application is a huge project. It takes thousands of hours of labor, paying skilled developers high hourly rates the whole way.

In general, if you try to build a travel app from scratch, it's going to:

  • Cost you tens (or even hundreds) of thousands of dollars
  • Take many months
  • Be a managerial headache

There’s an easier way to build travel mobile apps, though:

Build your travel app as a WordPress site then use MobiLoud to convert it into native apps for iOS and Android.

This option is easier, more affordable and more efficient than building mobile apps from scratch. In most cases, it's going to be the best option for developing a travel app, unless you have an extensive mobile development team in-house (and unless you're actually a travel app development company, you probably don't).

Let's look at why this is.

No Coding Required

As mentioned in the previous passage, you're probably not running an app development company. If you were, you wouldn't be reading a guide on travel app development you found on the internet.

That means the biggest item of friction standing between your travel app ideas and reality is the ability to code an app.

WordPress is a great way to build a mobile-optimized website, without knowing anything about code. Anyone can use WordPress - and then it's even easier to use MobiLoud to convert your web app to a mobile app.

The MobiLoud team does all the heavy lifting. You don't need to do a thing.

Build for Web and Mobile at the Same Time

People prefer to use apps, but having a website is still essential in order to meet your target audience wherever they are.

More people will discover you via the web, and some people still just prefer to use a website.

If you build your travel app on WordPress first, you're getting the best of both worlds - you maintain a web presence, and allow your users to choose where and how they want to access your content.

Easy to Maintain and Update

Building a custom mobile app is not just hard, maintaining and updating it is too. You need to retain developers on hand, and relay any instructions to them whenever you want to update your content or UI.

But building on WordPress and converting your travel apps to mobile make this easy. Simply publish and update content through WordPress, which anyone can do. The content will update on your travel apps on mobile at the same time.

When you use MobiLoud to do it, our team is always on hand to help with updates and maintenance. You'll save tens of thousands per year by not having to pay developers.

Easy to Test and Validate Your Idea

With a fully custom mobile app taking potentially as much as $150,000 to build. you'll need to be really sure you're on to a winning idea.

If not, you're out a huge amount of money for a useless app, or on the hook with a bunch of mad investors.

Our option is much less risk. Building for WordPress is cheap, and you can convert your site to travel apps for Android and iOS without sourcing huge amounts of capital.

This lets you go to market and test your idea without staking your future on it.

Support for Mobile Features Such as Push Notifications

MobiLoud simply converts your existing website to mobile apps - but it also supports all the additional features that make mobile applications powerful.

Most importantly, you can send unlimited push notifications from your travel apps, and utilize OneSignal to target users at the right place and right time.

How to Build your Travel Guide App (And Convert it to Mobile Apps with MobiLoud)

Here's how you can launch a mobile travel app, with a minimum of time, effort and investment.

1. Build Your Website & Optimize for Mobile

Start off by creating everything in WordPress. Create your site, publish content, integrate visuals and other travel app features as we discussed earlier.

Specifically, focus on building a great mobile user experience through your website. This is essentially what people will get when they eventually use your app, so put the work in to make it great.

2. Sign Up to MobiLoud

Start the app building process by signing up to MobiLoud. We don't require any long-term commitments, and offer a 60 day money back guarantee, if you find it doesn't work for you.

You can book a demo with one of our team to see how it's going to work, learn more about the process and start down the path of converting your website into an app.

3. Hand Off to Our Team

From here, we start to compile your mobile apps.

While the bulk of your app will look just like your mobile website, we'll configure a few small things about your mobile travel apps' UI, such as navigation, native tab menu, and mobile-specific features like spinners and splash screens.

We do all the coding necessary to bring your app to life. All you need to do is wait.

We'll get back to you in a couple of weeks when your travel app is ready for testing. Try it out on your own devices, and let us know if you have any change requests, feedback or questions.

5. Sign Off On the Final Version

We'll make any more changes based on your feedback, and put together a final version for you to try.

Once you're happy, we'll handle the notoriously difficult process of submitting your apps to the Apple App Store and Google Play. Having done this thousands of times previously, we can guarantee approval for your apps.

That's it. All you need to focus on to launch your mobile travel app is the content. We take care of all the coding and technical work ourselves. It couldn't be easier.

travel guides application videos

In this digital era, travel videos have become more than mere documentation – they’re immersive experiences that transport viewers across continents, cultures, and emotions. From the warm embrace of the golden hour to the dynamic movement of camera shots, each element plays a pivotal role in painting an evocative tapestry of your adventures. Embark on this journey with us as we delve into the intricacies of planning narratives, harnessing natural light, and mastering camera techniques.

In the pages ahead, we’ll uncover the art of composition that transforms mundane scenes into cinematic masterpieces. We’ll explore the symphony of colors and sounds that breathe life into your videos, adding depth and emotion to every frame. Whether you’re capturing the vivacity of bustling markets or the serene tranquility of hidden landscapes, we’ll guide you through each step to ensure your travel videos resonate with audiences around the world.

  • Choosing Amazing Places

The choice of locations forms the foundation of your cinematic travel videos. Look for places that are visually striking and narratively intriguing. These are the places that will engage your audience and make your videos stand out.

  • Stunning Views: Seek destinations with awe-inspiring landscapes, architecture, and natural beauty.
  • Narrative Richness: Opt for locations with historical, cultural, or personal significance. Places that tell stories on their own.
  • Planning Your Story

Creating a cinematic travel video is more than just capturing beautiful visuals; it’s about telling a compelling story. Think of your video as a journey with a beginning, middle, and end. To craft a captivating narrative:

  • Structured Approach: Plan your video’s storyline like a roadmap. Outline the sequence of events and shots you want to include. This provides a clear direction for your filming and editing process.
  • Emotional Arc: Consider the emotional journey you want your viewers to experience. Will your video evoke excitement, nostalgia, or introspection? Map out how emotions will evolve throughout the video.
  • Key Moments: Identify pivotal moments that resonate with your overall story. Whether it’s a breathtaking view, a local interaction, or a cultural experience, these moments will be the pillars of your video’s narrative.

3. Planning Your Story

Crafting a compelling narrative is at the heart of cinematic travel videography. Your travel video is more than a collection of scenes; it’s a story that should engage your audience from start to finish. Here’s how to plan your story effectively:

  • Structured Approach: Treat your video like a story with a beginning, middle, and end. Create a storyboard that outlines the sequence of shots and scenes you want to include.
  • Emotional Arc: Consider the emotions you want to evoke in your viewers. Think about how you can build up emotions throughout your video to create a captivating journey.
  • Key Moments: Identify the highlights of your travel that are essential to your story. These moments should capture the essence of your experience and contribute to the overall narrative.
  • Using Natural Light

Natural light is a cinematographer’s best friend, and it can make your travel videos truly cinematic. Here’s how to harness the power of natural light for stunning visuals:

  • Golden Hour and Blue Hour: These are the periods just after sunrise and before sunset when the quality of light is magical. The golden hour bathes scenes in warm, soft light, while the blue hour adds a serene, ethereal ambiance.
  • Setting the Mood: Use the specific qualities of light during these hours to match the mood of your scenes. Golden hour light can evoke warmth and intimacy, while blue hour light can create a dreamy and contemplative atmosphere.
  • Camera Skills Made Simple

Creating cinematic travel videos doesn’t require you to be a professional filmmaker. Here’s how to master camera skills that add cinematic flair to your footage:

Basic Movements: Begin by practicing fundamental camera movements that can instantly enhance the quality of your shots:

  • Panning: Slowly move your camera horizontally from one side to another. This is great for capturing sweeping landscapes or revealing scenes.
  • Tilting: Rotate your camera vertically, moving it up or down. Tilting is useful for emphasizing tall structures or capturing dramatic skies.
  • Tracking: Follow a subject’s movement by moving your camera smoothly alongside it. Tracking shots add dynamism and immersion to your videos.

Stabilizers: Achieving steady shots is essential for a professional look, especially while on the move:

  • Gimbals: Invest in a handheld gimbal or stabilizer. These devices counteract any shaky movements, resulting in smooth and cinematic footage.
  • Steady Hands: If you’re shooting without a stabilizer, practice holding your camera steadily and walking smoothly to avoid jerky motions.
  • Making Pictures Look Great

Composition is a powerful tool for creating visually captivating shots. Mastering composition techniques can significantly enhance the cinematic quality of your travel videos:

Rule of Thirds: Utilize the rule of thirds to create balanced and visually engaging compositions:

  • Imagine your frame divided into a 3×3 grid with two horizontal lines and two vertical lines.
  • Place your subject or important elements along these lines or at their intersections.
  • This technique adds visual interest and guides the viewer’s eyes to key elements in the frame.

Leading Lines: Incorporate leading lines to draw the viewer’s gaze and create depth:

  • Look for natural or architectural lines within your scene, like roads, rivers, or fences.
  • These lines guide the viewer’s eyes into the frame, adding a sense of movement and perspective.

Foreground and Background: Play with foreground and background elements to add depth:

  • Place objects or elements in the foreground to frame your main subject and create layers within the shot.
  • This technique adds dimension and makes your shots more visually engaging.
  • Colors That Feel Right

Colors have a profound impact on the emotional tone of your videos. Understanding color psychology and applying color grading techniques can elevate your cinematic travel videos:

Color Psychology: Different colors evoke specific emotions and moods:

  • Warm Colors (Red, Orange, Yellow): Convey energy, warmth, and excitement. Use them for vibrant scenes and moments of action.
  • Cool Colors (Blue, Green, Purple): Evoke calmness, serenity, and reflection. They are well-suited for tranquil and contemplative scenes.

Color Grading: During the editing process, use color grading tools to achieve a cohesive and cinematic color palette:

  • Adjust colors to match the mood of each scene. Enhance warm tones for joyful moments and cool tones for introspective scenes.
  • Consistent color grading unifies the visual style of your video, making it feel like a cohesive cinematic experience.

8. Getting Extra Shots

Capturing the details adds depth and authenticity to your cinematic travel videos. Consider these techniques to create a richer visual experience:

Texture and Close-ups: Zoom in on textures, patterns, and small details that define the essence of a place:

  • Capture close-up shots of textured walls, vibrant textiles, local crafts, and unique architectural features.
  • These shots offer a tactile and immersive perspective, allowing viewers to appreciate the finer aspects of your surroundings.

Contextual Shots: Incorporate scenes that provide context to your location and convey a sense of local life:

  • Film scenes of bustling markets, people going about their daily routines, or street vendors interacting with customers.
  • Contextual shots establish the setting, culture, and atmosphere, making your video more immersive and engaging.

9. Sounds That Capture Moments

Sound plays a crucial role in creating a multisensory cinematic experience. Here’s how to use sound to enhance the immersion of your travel videos:

Ambient Sounds: Capture the sounds that define each location, bringing your audience closer to the environment:

  • Record ambient sounds like the chirping of birds, the rustling of leaves, the chatter of a crowded square, or the waves crashing on the shore.
  • These sounds transport viewers to the scene, making them feel as if they are right there with you.

Music Selection: Choose music that complements the mood of your video and enhances its emotional impact:

  • Select tracks that resonate with the overall tone of your video, whether it’s uplifting, reflective, or adventurous.
  • The right music creates a powerful synergy with the visuals, amplifying the emotions you want to convey.

10. Making Scenes Flow

Seamless transitions are essential for maintaining the rhythm and coherence of your cinematic travel video. Here’s how to ensure smooth transitions between scenes:

Transition Techniques: Experiment with various transition effects to keep the viewer engaged and create a natural progression:

  • Cut: An instantaneous switch from one scene to another. Use cuts for quick shifts in time or location.
  • Fade: A gradual transition where one scene fades out as the next fades in. Fades create a soft and subtle change.
  • Dissolve: Both scenes overlap briefly, creating a smooth transition. Dissolves work well for sequences that flow seamlessly.

Logical Progression: Ensure that your transitions make sense within the context of your story and maintain a logical flow:

  • Transitions should connect scenes that share thematic, visual, or narrative elements, ensuring a smooth and coherent viewing experience.

11. Slow and Fast Moments

Adding variations in time can infuse your cinematic travel videos with a captivating dynamic. Here’s how to master slow-motion and time-lapse techniques:

Slow Motion: Utilize slow-motion shots to highlight details and evoke emotions in your travel videos:

  • Slow-motion footage emphasizes specific actions, expressions, or movements, making them more impactful.
  • Use slow motion for sequences like a splash of water, a smile, or a sunrise, creating a sense of wonder and appreciation.

Time-Lapse: Create time-lapse sequences to showcase changes over time and capture the essence of a location:

  • Record scenes at a slower frame rate than usual and then play them back at normal speed. This compresses time and captures transformations like shifting clouds, changing light, or bustling crowds.
  • Time-lapses reveal the passage of time in a visually compelling way, adding depth to your narrative.

12. Focus on Close and Far

Mastering the focus of your shots adds a cinematic touch by directing the viewer’s attention. Here’s how to play with focus effectively:

Depth of Field: Control depth of field to draw attention to specific elements and create visual interest:

  • Use a wide aperture (small f-number) to achieve a shallow depth of field. This blurs the background while keeping your subject sharp and prominent.
  • Shallow depth of field isolates your subject, making it stand out from the surroundings and adding an artistic dimension to your shots.

Visual Hierarchy: Guide the viewer’s gaze by using focus to establish visual hierarchy:

  • Place your main subject in sharp focus while allowing the background or other elements to remain slightly blurred.
  • This technique directs attention where you want it, enhancing the narrative impact of your shots.

13. Moving Camera Tricks

Incorporating camera movement can bring energy and dynamism to your cinematic travel videos. Here’s how to use moving camera techniques effectively:

Walking Shots: Add movement to your shots by filming while walking, creating a sense of exploration and immersion:

  • Walking shots allow you to capture scenes from a traveler’s perspective, making viewers feel as if they’re part of the journey.
  • Use walking shots to introduce a location, showcase surroundings, or provide context to your narrative.

Stabilizers: Implement stabilizers or gimbals for smooth camera movement, even when you’re on the move:

  • Stabilizers counteract unwanted vibrations and shakes, ensuring your shots remain steady and professional-looking.
  • Smooth camera movement enhances the cinematic quality of your videos and adds a polished touch.

14. Editing Like a Pro

The editing process is where your cinematic travel video truly comes to life. Here’s how to refine your footage into a coherent and compelling story:

Story Flow: Organize your shots in a logical sequence that follows the narrative arc of your video:

  • Start with an attention-grabbing opening that sets the tone and hooks viewers’ interest.
  • Arrange shots in a way that maintains a smooth and engaging flow, leading viewers through the journey of your travel experience.

Color Correction: Enhance the visual consistency of your shots by applying color correction:

  • Adjust color balance, exposure, and contrast to create a uniform look across different scenes.
  • Color correction ensures that your video maintains a professional and polished appearance.

Color Grading: Use color grading to establish a specific cinematic atmosphere that suits your video’s mood:

  • Apply color grading presets or make manual adjustments to achieve the desired color palette.
  • Color grading enhances the overall visual impact of your video and contributes to its cinematic feel.

15. Telling an Exciting Tale

Bringing all elements together, you’re ready to craft a compelling travel narrative that captivates your audience:

Strong Beginning: Begin with a powerful opening shot or sequence that grabs viewers’ attention and sets the tone for the rest of the video:

  • Hook your audience with an intriguing visual or a captivating moment that sparks curiosity.

Effective Storytelling: Use your planned shots to create a coherent and emotionally engaging journey:

  • Introduce key moments, showcase unique experiences, and convey the essence of each location you visited.
  • Build a narrative arc that keeps viewers invested in the unfolding story.

Memorable Conclusion: Wrap up your video with impact, leaving a lasting impression on your audience:

  • End with a shot that encapsulates the essence of your journey or delivers a powerful message.
  • The conclusion should resonate with viewers and reinforce the cinematic quality of your travel video.

Conclusion .

As you venture into the realm of cinematic travel videography, remember that this journey encompasses both your creative vision and technical expertise. While the process may appear intricate, every step you take contributes to the creation of videos that transport your viewers to the heart of your travels. Embrace patience as you experiment, learn, and refine your skills, understanding that achieving cinematic quality requires time and dedication.

Dive into the realm of experimentation by exploring different angles and perspectives. Seize the opportunity to capture genuine emotions that define your journey—a breathtaking vista, a heartwarming interaction, or a peaceful moment of reflection. Each destination carries its own unique story, so strive to narrate its distinctiveness and charm through your lens.

Striking a balance between mastering cinematic techniques and embracing the authenticity of your adventure is paramount. Allow the technical aspects to enhance your story without overshadowing the essence of your travel experiences. Embrace a stance of continuous learning, staying attuned to new equipment, software, and trends to ensure your videos remain fresh and engaging.

When you go on a great trip, sometimes it’s not enough to tell people about it—you want to show them, too. And in our increasingly digital world, the best way to do this is with a video. Travel videos—when done well—have the power to inspire and share stories in an emotional and immersive way. They also make wonderful keepsakes that encompass all the best memories from your experiences.

How to Make a Travel Video

You don’t have to be a professional to make a travel video, either. Here are some tips for planning, filming, and editing that will help you create great travel videos, even if you don’t have any previous experience.

To Make a Travel Video, First Get the Right Equipment

Any great travel video begins with a packing list. Before you set off for your destination, make sure you’re bringing along everything you need to get the shots you want. First, decide what kind of camera to use. Whether it’s the camera in your phone or a more high-end model, there are lots of options to consider depending on your trip.

If you want to make a travel video with high-quality images, look into bringing a  DSLR camera  or even a  handheld camcorder  or  point-and-shoot camera . If you know you’ll be on the move during your trip or want to capture underwater footage, a  GoPro  is a great all-purpose camera perfect for capturing big adventures. And if you’re not looking to invest a lot in camera equipment, you can always just use your phone. Smartphone image quality is constantly improving, and there are plenty of ways to  improve on that quality , too.

Additionally, if you suspect you’ll be recording a lot of audio, or will be shooting in windy environments, it might be a good idea to invest in a high-quality  external microphone .

Protect Your Equipment

When you’ve decided which sort of camera you’ll be using to make a travel video, you’ll need the right stuff to protect it during your travels. There are plenty of  small camera bags  that will do for any number of cameras, but if you’re going pro and planning on bringing a lot of equipment, consider buying a separate carry-on designed to organize and pad your equipment, like  this sturdy bag  from Ape Case.

If you’re planning to do all the shooting on your GoPro, the  VentureCase  from GoPole will keep your camera and accessories dry and organized.

Know Where You’re Going

Spontaneous travel is fun, but if you know you’ll want to make a video to document your adventures, it helps to know where you’re going. Before you leave, make sure you have a rough itinerary of where you’ll be and when you’ll be there.

Not only will this help you plan out your final video, it will also give you the opportunity to research what you’ll see when you’re there. Check weather reports to determine when the best time to shoot will be and look up images of each destination to start planning the shots you’re likely to get when you’re there. Time of day also plays a big factor when it comes to getting the perfect shot. For example, if you want to capture silhouettes on the  Charles Bridge in Prague , it’s better to visit during the less-crowded sunrise hour.

To Make a Travel Video, You Need to Create a Shot List

Figure out what you want to record at your destination. Most people tend to pull out their cameras instinctively (e.g., whenever they see something interesting). But to make a travel video, it’s smart to plan some of your shots ahead of time so you can get all the footage you’ll need.

If you know you’ll be visiting the Eiffel Tower in Paris, for example, you’ll want more than just a shot from the top. Here’s an example of a list you might make for this specific experience:

  • Establishing shot of the Eiffel Tower from street
  • Shot of the base of the Eiffel Tower
  • Shot of purchasing your ticket
  • Shot of taking the elevator to the top
  • Panning shot from the top overlooking Paris

It might mean more work, but you’ll be thankful you have all that footage when you sit down to edit your travel video.

Narration in a Travel Video

Consider incorporating narration to help tell your story. There are two ways to do this—during or after your trip. If you want to make your narration a part of your video, remember to talk while you record or shoot selfie-style and let your audience know what you’re doing. (“Here we are at the Grand Canyon!”) You can even turn the camera on your travel partners and ask them to tell the camera what’s happening in the moment.

If you choose to wait, adding narration after the trip is over is also a great way to reflect on your travel memories. All you need to do is write a script and record. Think of this as an opportunity to really organize your story. (“Little did we know what was waiting for us around the corner.”) For an extra challenge, try to incorporate both types of narration when you make a travel video.

Another way to liven up your travel videos is by bringing people into them. Just make sure to ask for permission before you start recording. Travel guides, locals, and even your travel partners all make great subjects for interviews. Shots of people are a good way to mix up your footage, and you can even edit their voices over certain shots. For example, if your travel guide is describing the history of a landmark, this is a great time to cut right to your footage of it.

Time Lapses

Time-lapses are mesmerizing to watch and easy to do, so there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be shooting time lapses on your trip. Many cameras, including your smartphone, have time-lapse functions that you can take advantage of. All you need to do is set your camera in a steady place and wait. It’s not always necessary, but it’s helpful to have a tripod handy for filming time-lapses. If you don’t have a tripod, just make sure you have a flat surface where you can place your camera or phone.

To make the most out of your time-lapse, look for moving scenes, whether that be a busy town square or a vivid sunset. Personally, I like to incorporate time-lapses into my trip by setting up my camera at a restaurant or anywhere I know I’ll be sitting for a long period of time.

Editing Your Travel Video

When the trip is over and you’ve recovered from your  post-travel blues , it’s time to sit down and look over your footage. Focus on the moments that stand out and cut anything that didn’t come out as well as you hoped. Unless you documented something truly magnificent, the world doesn’t need to see your blurry or shaky footage. When you’ve figured out which clips you’ll be using, sit back and think about the story that you’re trying to tell and how you can use some of the above techniques (narration, time-lapses, etc.) to bring that story to life.

When it comes to software, there are plenty of  free video-editing tools  you can use to put your video together. Some, like  Windows Movie Maker , come with your computer, or for Mac users, iMovie is available at the  Apple Store .

If you’re willing to pay for your editing software, programs like  Adobe Premiere  or  Final Cut Pro  are a great way to give your videos a professional edge. There’s a bit of a learning curve with these programs, but many tutorials are available online.

Every epic travel montage needs the perfect song, but unfortunately you might run into trouble if you try to upload your video to a public platform without securing the rights to the music you’ve selected. Websites like  Facebook  and  YouTube  will often remove videos if the videos use music that falls under copyright.

The best way to share your video with your friends and the rest of the world is to look for royalty-free music. This is music available online that you can download and use for free. Just make sure to credit the original source. There are plenty of websites to find this kind of music, like  Bensound  or  Sound of Picture.  And if you insist your video is incomplete without your favorite song, you can always try to  purchase the rights  or just keep an unpublished version for your collection.
