Packs of world-famous civet coffee at Mt. Apo Cafe in Davao, Philippines

Photo from Mt. Apo Coffee

Civet Coffee is one of the most unique yet expensive coffee in the world, not only because of its taste but also the way it is prepared.

Civet Coffee is made with the help of a civet, a cat-like wild animal that is native to the country, particularly in Davao. It eats the sweet coffee cherries and then poops the beans.

This organic process gives the coffee beans a more profound and smoother flavor with no bitter taste, making it a favorite among coffee lovers. However, purchasing it in Europe or America can cost a fortune!

Getting it from the source is a less expensive option. Mt. Apo has a cafe where visitors can buy a cup and take home a bag of beans of this world-class coffee.

The strength of its dark chocolate-like scent is so natural that it tastes like roasted hazelnuts. It's a must-try drink during your stay in Davao.

BEST TIME TO EXPLORE DAVAO CITY

The best time for explore Davao City is between December to February for it’s normally the coolest and driest time of the year. If you are fan of festivals, you might visit Kadayawan Festival in the month of August. During this month this is a bountiful harvest of fruits so the price of pomelo, durian and mangosteen are relatively cheap. Just make sure to reserve hotel room in advance for its the most popular time of the year. Bring extra load of patience also for many tourist flocks to join the festivity. I explored Davao in the month of December, the weather is fine and majority of the tourist attractions are not crowded.

HOW TO GET THERE

Located two hours south of Manila and Pampanga, you’ll be arriving at the Francisco Bangoy International Airport. I strongly recommend that you fly via Clark International Airport to avoid the hassle of long lines and traffic. Local and international flights are also cheaper via Clark compare to Manila airport. Worried about the transportation? P2P buses are available to and from Clark Pampanga. Check daily flights to Davao City via Philippine Airlines . Check current promo fares at www.philippineairlines.com .

ALT="places to see in central mindanao"

WELCOME TO CENTRAL MINDANAO TRAVEL GUIDE! If you are planning to travel around Central Mindanao anytime soon, this travel guide is perfect for you. This travel guide highlights the best places to visit in Central Mindanao or SOCCSKSARGEN!

SOCCSKSARGEN – located in Mindanao is far by one of the cheapest tourist destinations in the Philippines that I have recently visited. There’s a cherry on top of SOCCSKSARGEN or The Central Mindanao ; it is totally cheap to travel here!

Affordable and Safe – are two words that travelers would love to hear about a place they’re visiting. If it is affordable to reach a certain tourist destination, who wouldn’t dare to check out the beauty of that place? Safety. This is one of the most important things that travelers consider when visiting a particular destination.

Table of Contents

The Central Mindanao (Region XII)

The Central Mindanao is an administrative region in the Philippines, designated as Region XII. This region is now more commonly known as SOCCSKSARGEN. SOCCSKSARGEN centers on its four provinces and one of its cities namely called South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, and General Santos City.

Surrounded by vast forests, high mountains, wonderful lakes, and majestic waterfalls, the region is surely one of the best places to visit in the country. An underrated region that deserves to get more recognition from local and foreign tourists.

Best Places to visit in SOCCSKSARGEN (Central Mindanao)

Listed down are the must-see attractions in the region. These are the best places that you should see when traveling around Central Mindanao.

Seven Waterfalls, South Cotabato

There is something so special about the province of South Cotabato – a wide range of rainforests, freshest tilapia from its lake, unique culture and traditions, and breathtaking, hidden waterfalls scattered in the wild.

Situated in Lake Sebu; a well-known town in South Cotabato boasts the natural wonders of the seven waterfalls that can only be seen in the province itself. Namely as Hikong Alo (Passage), Hikong Bente (Immeasurable), Hikong B’lebel (Zigzag or Coil), Hikong Lowig (Booth), Hikong Ukol (Wildflower), Hikong K-fo-i (Short), and Hikong Tonok (Soil).

The first 2 waterfalls – Hikong Alo and Hikong Bente, the only falls that are accessible to the public. Meanwhile, you can only see the other five waterfalls by ziplining. Get an adrenaline rush as you ride the 180-meter high zip line, known as the highest and longest zipline in Southeast Asia! This is a one-of-a-kind experience that shouldn’t be missed, isn’t it?

The view from above would definitely make you speechless! (That actually happened to me.)

The Grand Mosque, Cotabato

The Grand Mosque or also known as The Sultan Hassal Bolkiah Masjid is one of the mosques that you can visit in Cotabato. Dubbed as the largest mosque in the Philippines , The Grand Mosque can accommodate 15,000 people. Funded by the Sultan of Brunei, this mosque actually cost around Php300 million. Make sure to wear proper attire when entering the mosque.

No Entrance Fee.

Asik-Asik Falls, North Cotabato

Asik-Asik Falls is one of the most popular destinations in SOCCSKSARGEN. Your trip wouldn’t be complete without visiting these majestic falls situated in the province of Cotabato. This is quite far from the city yet surely worth visiting! Fall in love with the 140-meter wide curtain-like spring falls and appreciate God’s masterpiece! It feels like you don’t want to leave this place anymore.

Lotus Flower, Lake Sebu

This is definitely one for the books. You shouldn’t miss out on visiting the beauty of the lotus flowers in Lake Sebu! Wear a traditional costume and take a lot of instagrammable photos while taking a wooden boat. Catch the lotus flower blooming in the morning from 5 AM-8 AM. The lotus flower viewing is only until 10 AM. There’s no entrance fee. All you need is to rent a boat (which usually costs around Php 200 per ride) and a good camera!!

Lang Dulay Weaving Center

Named after the Lang Dulay , a Filipino traditional weaver (the National Living Treasures Awardee) , this weaving center was built in order to preserve the culture and traditions of the Tboli people (indigenous people in South Cotabato) and to preserve the art of weaving in the region and the Philippines.

Lang Dulay Weaving Center has become one of the top tourist attractions in South Cotabato. If you want to have a deeper knowledge about the Philippine culture, then this place must be in your bucket list! You may watch and learn a lot of things about weaving from Lang Dulay’s family!

No Entrance Fee. Donations will do.

For adventure seekers and outdoor enthusiasts, visiting Lake Holon is the best thing that you can do when in South Cotabato. This is one of the Tboli tribe’s hidden gems that is something to be very proud of!

Lake Holon is 1,341 meters above sea level it takes about 3-4 hours to reach the lake. Please know that you need to contact the Tourism Office before visiting Lake Holon. They highly encourage tourists to book in advance because they limit the number of guests visiting per day.

Why You Should Watch Vincenzo: A Korean Drama Review

New La Union, Sarangani Eco Park

If you are up for another new adventure, you may visit Sarangani Eco Park. Sarangani is just two hours away from General Santos City. Quench your thirst for an adrenaline rush by trying out one of the thrilling activities in the province. You can go white water tubing in the clear waters of the Pangi River. Ride on the improvised rubber tube and experience the 1.6-kilometer ride over the water. No need to worry about this activity. In addition , it is totally safe. You will have a guide until it is done.

For the tubing activity, its cost depends on the distance.

1.6 KM = Php 130; 2.1 KM = Php 200, 4.1 KM = Php 300 (As of writing)

General Santos Fish Port Complex

GenSan is the biggest importer of tuna. This is where you can get a sight of the biggest tuna in the country. To be able to see it, you need to get to the port from 8 AM to 10 AM. Make sure to visit the Tuna Capital of the Philippines to learn more about fisheries and aquaculture.

The Pink Mosque

The Pink Mosque is located in the town of Datu Saudi Ampatuan in the province of Maguindanao. Maguindanao is part of BARMM and obviously not part of Central Mindanao. But geographically speaking , the province of Maguindanao is situated in the central part of Mindanao; boarded by Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat. So if you are traveling around Central Mindanao, you can also visit the Pink Mosque to tick off another bucket list! Note that this is the only pink mosque that you can find in the Philippines!

Best Things to do in Central Mindanao

  • Chase the waterfalls.
  • Visit the mosques.
  • Get to know more about the indigenous people and tribes in the country and learn about their ways of living.
  • Witness the breathtaking view of the lake.
  • Try the highest zipline in Southeast Asia.
  • Go on a food trip.
  • Visit the Capital Tuna of the Philippines.
  • Taste the freshest seafood in the region.
  • Hike Lake Holon and go camping.

Whether you are trying to escape from reality, get away from hustle and bustle of life, or have an open mind about the unknown culture, traveling around Central Mindanao provides the best experience that you could ever have!

Among the places mentioned above, what do you think is the best place to visit in Central Mindanao? I hope this travel guide to Central Mindanao helps!

Davao Region (Region XI Profile)

Davao City, modern metropolis bursting with life, verve and color, is located in a land area of 244,000 hectares and is touted as the world’s largest in land area. This city, teeming with a vibrant populace, is the bustling hub of commerce, education, tourism, arts, culture and wellness in the southern Philippines.

Situated in a typhoon-free zone with a dynamic, able support from the local government and harmonious synergy of multi-cultural and multilingual peoples from different indigenous tribes, Muslims communities, migrant settlers and a large expatriate community, make this cosmopolitan city conducive for business, investments and tourism.

Davao Region

Designated as Region XI, Davao Region is one of the regions of the Philippines, located on the southeastern portion of Mindanao. Davao Region consists of four provinces, namely: Compostela Valley, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, and Davao Oriental. The region encloses the Davao Gulf and its regional center is Davao City.

Region XI was originally called Southern Mindanao, and in addition to the three Davao provinces also included Surigao Del Sur and South Cotabato. At that time, Compostela Valley was still part of Davao del Norte. Republic Act No. 7225, ratified on March 16, 1992, created the province of Sarangani from South Cotabato. Then, Republic Act No. 7901, signed on February 3, 1995, by President Fidel V. Ramos transferred Surigao del Sur into the newly created region of Caraga (Region XIII). Finally, on September 19, 2001, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's Executive Order No. 36 reorganized the regions and provinces in Mindanao. This moved South Cotabato and Sarangani to SOCCSKSARGEN region and renamed Southern Mindanao as Davao Region.

The Night Scene

Davao's lively night scene is an adventure in itself with its diverse fun and wholesome night activities and destinations. A fun-filled fusion of various after-dark actions in videoke and piano bars, dance clubs, music lounges, restaurants, and coffee shops. Davao's favorite night spots are conveniently located in popular dining and entertainment enclaves such as The Venue (Quirino Avenue.), Matina Town Square (Matina), Rizal Promenade (Rizal Street), Victoria Plaza Mall (J.P. Laurel Avenue), Station 91 (C.M. Recto Avenue), Fountain Place (Agdao), Damosa Gateway (Lanang), Jack's Ridge Resort and Restaurant (Shrine Hill), among others. Or opt for a night of chance and test your luck the Casino Filipino (Grand Regal Hotel) or at the Casino Filipino VIP Club (The Apo View Hotel).

The perfect climax to your night? A cup of rich and creamy durian coffee in the metro's coffee shops and cafes. But of course, you can extend your crazy party hours until the wee hours of the morning.

Foodtrip Hang-out

Eating out is just one of the many favorite pastimes of the Davaoeños. More often, you would hear them say "mangaon 'ta!" (let's eat!) or even discuss about the next meal while dining. It is because food is cheap, fresh and mouth-watering in this city known for its abundance of seafood and farm-fresh bounties.

Never miss to sample local specialties such as inihaw na panga (grilled tuna jaw), inihaw na bihod (grilled tuna roe), crispy buntot ng bariles (tuna tail), chicken barbecue grilled the Davao way, and of course, the ubiquitous kinilaw (raw tuna or blue marlin strips marinated in coconut vinegar, soy sauce, chili and other local spices), served with puso (hanging rice) and an interesting dip consisting of soy sauce, coconut vinegar, calamansi (Philippine lemon) and local spices.

You can also find numerous selections of Filipino, Thai, French, Italian, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese and other foreign cuisine in various restaurants around the city, making Davao City a truly exciting place for dining.

Wander Around

Here are suggested itineraries to complete your Davao experience.

  • Around the metro

Experience the daily grind of the locals as you stroll along San Pedro Street. You can find the city hall, city council and San Pedro Cathedral, the city's largest church, along this thoroughfare. You can also take a break and savor durian at the nearby Durian Park (Bolton St.). Get a glimpse of Davao's culture and history as you witness local tribes weave beautiful fabrics at the T'boli Weaving Center (Waterfront Insular Hotel), and see how the city progressed through time with a visit to the Davao Museum (Insular Village). Take a trip back to another era at the Japanese Tunnel & Restaurant (Balusong-Matina). Then make a stopover for fresh fruits at Bankerohan Public Market.

  • Bounties of Nature

Enjoy a day with nature in the fascinating countryside. Visit the Philippine Eagle Center (Malagos), Malagos Garden Resort (Malagos), Crocodile Park (Diversion Road, Ma-a), GAP Farming Resort (Diversion Road, Ma-a), High Ponds Resort (Toril), and Eden Nature Park (Eden, Toril). See how our premium tuna products are packed and shipped at the Davao Fish Port Complex (Toril). On your way back to the city center, make a brief stop at Lola Abon's Durian Factory (Matina) for durian confections you can take home.

  • Shop, shop, shop

Davao City prides itself in having the most number of malls and department stores this side of the archipelago. Indulge yourselves with hours of shopping and recreation at Gaisano Mall of Davao (J.P. Laurel Avenue), Victoria Plaza (J.P. Laurel Avenue), Gaisano South Citimall (Ilustre Street), NCCC Mall (Matina), Makro (Bangkal) and SM City (Ecoland). Aldevinco Shopping Center (C.M. Recto Avenue) is a favorite bazaar for "pasalubong" (take home) items of batik garments, brass products, ethnic accessories and souvenir shirts sold cheaper than those in the malls. Other favorite "pasalubong" include fresh and candied fruits, orchids and cutflowers, packed frozen tuna, and fresh seafood available in various shops and public markets.

Getting Around

The Davao International Airport service flights from major points of destinations in the Philippines including the cities of Manila, Cebu, Iloilo, Bacolod and Zamboanga as well as direct flights from Manado (Indonesia) and Singapore, connecting Davao virtually to the world.

Air travel from Manila to Davao is approximately 90 minutes by plane. Travel time by sea takes three days from Manila North harbor to Davao's Sasa International Wharf while land travel via the scenic Pan-Philippine or Maharlika Highway takes around 42 hours.

The new Davao International Airport is a mere 15-minute ride from downtown Davao. Metered taxicabs and car rentals are readily available.

Top 11 Places to Visit in SOCCSKSARGEN (Mindanao)

We recently visited Mindanao for a backpacking trip in SOCCSKSARGEN and we were blown away by its beauty, people’s hospitality and harmony of a diverse, well-preserved culture. It also made us realize how safe it is to travel in this part of Mindanao specifically to the provinces of South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and city of General Santos; contrary to the stigma that people have about it. If you also plan to explore this part of Mindanao, here’s the top 11 places to visit in SOCCSKSARGEN that you should not miss!

Asik-Asik Falls in Alamada, Cotabato

Enchanting. One of a kind. There is just too much to say about this place but you’d surely be lost for words upon seeing it with your own eyes. This is Asik-Asik Falls — just one of the many yet among the most remarkable waterfalls in the region. It is one of the tourists’ top favorite places to visit in SOCCSKSARGEN. It is characterized by a curtain of waterfalls that flows through the walls that are covered in lush green. Unlike any other waterfalls, Asik-asik does not have a wide and deep catch basin but it sprinkles down a rocky base with shallow waters only. Its name is derived from a Hiligaynon word “asik” which means sprinkle.

How to Get There:

  • From Cotabato : make your way to the terminal where you can take a bus bound for Davao. Get off at Libungan Public Market. Then, hop onto a jeep going to Barangay Upper Dado. From the drop off point, haggle for a tricycle or habal habal that would take you to Asik-Asik Falls. You may also opt to take a tricycle from Libungan Public Market to another terminal with tricycles going to Alamada. From there, charter another one that would take you to Asik-Asik Falls.
  • From Davao : Make your way to Ecoland Bus Terminal. From there, take a van or bus bound for Cotabato. Tell the driver that you’re going to Alamada so they can drop you off a point where you can charter a motorcycle going to Asik-Asik Falls.

Note : Be mindful of the vans and buses’ trip schedule. It’s safer to travel to Alamada before 5:00 PM and stay at inns or homestays by the jump off. Also, be it known to you that the more or less 30-minute trek going down to the falls (especially on the way back up) isn’t as fun as a walk in the park. It is an agonizing one yet with a priceless reward, so to speak.

Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque (Grand Mosque), Cotabato City

Cotabato City’s Grand Mosque is named after the current Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal  Bolkiah  ibni Omar Ali Saifuddien III who funded about half of its construction cost and the rest by the former Philippine President’s administration, Noynoy Aquino. It is considered to be among the largest mosque in the Philippines and Southeast Asia.

There is no entrance fee when visiting the mosque. However, please observe proper attire and following their rules shall you decide to enter. There are attires for rent just outside for only Php 100.00 . Also, take note that there are no public vehicles passing by nor terminals around . Thus, it is best to rent a tricycle or a habal habal that would take you here and the other attractions in the city from the airport.

Sultan Kudarat Provincial Capitol

In case you’re wondering what is there to see in this place, this structure holds the title of the “largest provincial capitol” in the Philippines up to this date. Located in Isulan, Sultan Kudarat, this white building, about five-story tall with a golden dome sits in a sprawling greenfields in the town proper. The golden statue of Sultan Muhammad Dipatuan Kudarat whom they named the province after stands in front of it. The said Sultan is considered as the greatest in Maguindanao and the most powerful in Mindanao.

Lang Dulay Weaving Center, Lake Sebu, South Cotabato

This Weaving center is a legacy left by the late Lang Dulay , the T’Nalak Master Weaver of the T’boli Tribe in Lake Sebu, South Cotabato. The National Commission for the Culture and the Arts awarded her in 1998 with the “Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan” (GAMABA) for preserving their weaving tradition. Further, she used to be one of the Philippines’ National Living Treasures not until her passing on April 13, 2015.

The T’boli tribe is known for T’Nalak (T’boli cloth) weaving which designs were sent and taught to them in their dreams by the abaca goddess, Fu Dalu. This is the very reason why they are known as the “dreamweavers”. Lang Dulay is believed to have received more than a hundred of designs. She passed down most of it to her granddaughters (as she never had a daughter) to preserve the weaving tradition.

Other Places to Visit Near SOCCSKSARGEN

Our Muslim brothers and sisters in Mindanao are open about accepting visitors in their place of worship regardless of the religion. Our responsibility as non-Islam then is to respect it. Because of that, mosques have become among the top places to visit in SOCCSKSARGEN and its nearby region. While Grand Mosque is the only one located in SOX itself, there are two more from a nearby region that can be also visited. These are the White and Pink Mosque.

Masjid Al-Nasser Abpi (White Mosque), Maguindanao

Among the sought-after spots that backpackers in SOCCSKSARGEN would never miss out on is the White Mosque in Datu Odin Sinsuat in Maguindanao – a province in the neighboring region called BARMM or Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. This is relatively the newest of the three mosques that travelers would visit in SOCCSKSARGEN and BARMM.

There are no Muslim attires for rent in the temple so make sure that you at least pack or wear a modest outfit especially if you decide to visit White Mosque. They don’t collect entrance fees from visitors, too . The only thing they’d ask is respect by observing the rules in the mosque.

White Mosque, Cotabato City

Like Grand Mosque, Al-Nasser Abpi is situated in a far end of a corner where there’s no public transport available . Hence it is advisable to rent a tricycle or a habal habal to get to it and away hassle-free.

Masjid Dimaukom (Pink Mosque), Maguindanao del Sur

tourist attraction in region 11

Masjid Dimaukom, also known as the Pink Mosque is named after Samsudin Dimaukom, the mayor of Datu Saudi Ampatuan who also directed its construction. It is situated in the province of Maguindanao del Sur and was given to its people as a gift. The iconic color of the mosque represents love and peace and as per the hearsays, it was the former mayor’s wife’s favorite color, too. The construction of the mosque itself shows the values it embodies since not only Muslims took part in it. There were also Christian laborers, too.

8 Must-Visit Places in Region 12: The 12th Paradise

If the Philippines as a whole has been called a paradise of 7,107 islands, then its South Central Mindanao region is a paradise within a paradise.

We can even say that it’s the “12th Paradise.” Region 12, also known as “Soccsksargen,” is composed of the provinces of South Cotabato, (North) Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, and the cities of General Santos, Cotabato, Koronadal, Kidapawan, and Tacurong.

The Department of Tourism – Region 12 recently launched its tourism promotional drive in another region, Western Visayas, in the cities of Iloilo and Bacolod.

“The launch of the region’s new image will put to the fore its cultural, adventure, and natural attractions which are largely unexplored,” said DOT Regional Director Nita Nelly Dillera.

It was also an opportunity for businesses to match with their counterparts in Western Visayas.

The exhibit features the inaul of Cotabato City, the tinalak of Lake Sebu’s T’boli tribe, the tasty tuna and processed food from the “tuna capital” of General Santos City, and the tropical fruits from Cotabato and South Cotabato provinces.
