Sallie House

Home » Highlights » Sallie House

Atchison’s most famous haunted house, the Sallie House, is visited by hundreds each year. The house is currently not occupied, and available for both daytime visits and overnight stays. A waiver is required due to the potential for personal injury, though no serious injuries have been reported since the last tenants in 1993.

History of the Sallie House

Originally built at the turn of the century, this house became the residence of an Atchison physician. The front served as office space and examination rooms, while the doctor and his family lived upstairs.  One day, a frantic mother arrived carrying her 6-year-old daughter, Sallie. The child had collapsed from severe abdominal pain. The doctor diagnosed appendicitis and knew there was no time to delay surgery. Believing the appendix would soon burst, the doctor began cutting Sallie before the anesthesia took full effect. Sallie’s screams suddenly stopped and she grew pale and limp. She died on the operating table – her last memories of a man whom she believed was torturing her.

Hauntings at the Sallie House

Though the house had long been known to be haunted, Sallie’s haunting grew ominous in 1993, when the house was rented to a young couple. Their dog seemed to growl at nothing, especially near the upstairs nursery.   Things began to take a violent turn, however. Fires broke out in the house and a series of sinister attacks on the husband began. The operating area would become cold. Objects would visibly move when the young man drew near. He could feel scratches upon his chest or abdomen. But never did the ghost attack the wife or baby.

Events that have been witnessed by visitors to the Sallie House include:

  • video and investigative equipment that stop working
  • batteries that are full immediately and completely draining
  • experience moving objects
  • unexplained scratches or bruising on their bodies during/after visits
  • physical touches
  • mysterious coldness
  • Trained guide dogs refuse to enter the nursery

Confirmations and Media Attention

Psychics have confirmed the presence of spirits dwelling in the home and many have actually communicated with them – and skeptics have left as believers. Visits by paranormal investigators have provided audio, video and photographic proof of paranormal activity.

The house has received coverage on several television networks, including A&E, The Travel Channel, The Discovery Channel, and the Syfy Channel, as well as various national publications and radio outlets.

Sallie House: The History of This Atchison Kansas Haunted House – You Can Tour It!

Sarah Paschall

Featured in almost every paranormal series and documentary in the history of the genre, the Sallie House is considered one of the most (if not the most) haunted house in America. Located in Atchison Kansas – at 508 N. Second Street – the home’s dark, mysterious history has both terrified and fascinated people around the globe. If you’re looking to add a bit of creepy to your day, keep reading as we take an in-depth look at the Sallie home, its reported hauntings, and the history and myths that made this location so famous, or infamous, rather.

The Sallie House

Built in the 1800s, this mid-century home has 3-bedrooms and 2-bathrooms. The 1,200 square foot residence was originally built for Michael Finney and his family, who would live in the home off and on throughout the generations until 1947.

Four members of the Finney family (at different times throughout the years) died of natural causes in the residence. The property had numerous owners after the Finney family, but none would be as memorable as the Pickmans, a young couple who purchased the home in the 90s and began reporting strange, sometimes violent, occurrences in the home that were beyond explanation. In the present day, the home acts as a sort of macabre attraction for those looking for a scare as well as a hub for paranormal investigators looking to catch evidence of spirit activity.

Sallie House Haunting

Almost every form of paranormal activity has reportedly occurred in the Sallie House, which is why it has gained so much media coverage over the last 20+ years. Series such as A Haunting , Most Haunted Town , Unexplained Mysteries , My Ghost Story , Ghost Adventures, and  Sightings have all told the story of the Sallie House Atchison Kansas and the paranormal entities that reportedly inhabit it.

The activity has been so severe at times that some believe the hauntings may be demonic in nature or speculate that the Sallie House could be home to a supernatural portal where spirits can enter as they please. Regardless of what the home harbors behind its walls, one thing many can agree on – there are some very odd things going on in this haunted house Kansas City. People have reported seeing full-bodied apparitions (one being that of a young girl), mysteriously burning candles (some with traces of burnt fingerprints on them), and objects moving in thin air, while others have heard disembodied voices of women, men, and children at night as well as scratching on the walls and the sound of furniture being moved around. There have even been reports of physical attacks and possessions.

Sallie House History

Though the home is referred to in modern times as the Sallie House, there is no factual proof that a young girl named Sally actually lived in the house or died there. There is, however, an endless supply of urban legends surrounding the story of the residence – one of the more famous of them being that Dr. Charles Finney, the owner of the home at the time, was operating his office out of the first floor of the residence and attempted to perform emergency surgery on a little girl (Sallie) which would result in her death.

There are actually two versions of this story – one being that a woman rushed her ailing 6-year-old daughter to the home after the girl complained of severe abdominal pain. When Dr. Charles Finney discovered that the girl’s appendix was on the verge of rupturing, he opted to perform surgery on her at his residence and did not even allow time for the anesthetics to take effect before beginning the procedure. The little girl died on the table.

In another version of events, it is said that Sallie was born as a result of an affair Dr. Finney was having with an African housemaid. When the little girl became ill, the mother brought Sallie to her father, who would not allow for the girl to be taken to a hospital for fear that his extramarital activities would be exposed. Instead, he performed the surgery himself and she died due to the botched procedure.

While it’s true that the tragic story of Sallie could be nothing more than macabre legend, it still doesn’t mean that the Sallie House hasn’t seen its fair share of dark events, since it was discovered in the early 2000s that there was a pentagram drawn on the basement floor of the home as well as evidence of Satanic rituals taking place on the property. There was even a luminol test performed in the home that allegedly highlighted signs of blood spatter in the closet of the master bedroom as well as satanic sigils on the walls. A bloody sweater was also reportedly found in the attic.

The Pickman Family

Tony and Debbie Pickman were a young couple, recently married, and pregnant with their first child when they moved into the home on 508 North 2 nd Street in December of 1992. Happy and hopeful that this would be the perfect dream home to start their family, Tony Pickman and his wife had no idea that they were moving into what would turn out to be their worst nightmare.

The activity seemed to start around a month after the couple moved in and was far milder than what was to come. In the earlier days of their time at the house, the couple only recounts small things occurring, such as lights dimming, cold spots, toys playing on their own, and animals acting strangely.

After the birth of their son, the activity seemed to pick up a bit more, even keeping the baby awake at all hours. In fact, the couple discovered from a neighbor that the nursery lights remained on all throughout the night, even after the Pickmans switched them off so the baby could rest. Strange mold had even begun to form on various household items for unexplained reasons.

At one point, the couple even returned home to find that all of the stuffed animals Debbie had organized in the nursery were on the floor, forming a circle. At one point, after a particularly scary evening, the couple decided to spend the night at a family member’s house, but just as they were leaving, Tony Pickman began feeling a burning pain on his back and it was later discovered that he had sustained 3 mysterious scratches down his back.

Shortly after the attack, the Pickmans sought the help of psychic medium Barbara Connors who visited the home in order to get a better idea of what was taking place there. Her conclusion at the time was that a little girl (Sallie) was inhabiting the home and did much of her haunting to get attention from the family.

Upon Connor’s advice, the couple tried their best to embrace Sallie as a sort of ghostly daughter, but as time passed, the activity and the attacks on Tony continued. In one instance, during their child’s birthday party at the home, a doll even caught ablaze. Finally done with living in constant fear, the Pickmans moved out of the home only 2 years after moving in. In recent years, Debbie Pickman has admitted that she now believes Sallie was not the spirit of a lonely little girl, but rather a demon posing as an innocent child in order to gain the trust of the family.

Tony, Debra, and their children still live in Atchison, according to their Facebook pages.

Who Owns Sallie House?

This is actually a tricky one since all the information regarding Sallie House seems to be more about its tenants than the owner, but according to the official Sallie House website, Les Smith Jr. has been the actual owner of Sallie House for over 20 years.

Ghost Adventures Sallie House

In the sixth episode of their tenth season, Zak, Aaron, and Nick from the Travel Channel’s popular paranormal series Ghost Adventures investigated the Sallie House with former owners, Tony and Debra Pickman. Some of the strange occurrences that took place during the investigation included Tony Pickman suffering welts on his neck from an unknown source, another guest being scratched on the arm, a guest psychic nearly fainting, the words “scratch Satan pain kept spirits” caught on the Puck device, and a teddy bear rolling on its own.

Sallie House Haunted

It’s impossible to give a Yes or No answer to the validity of spiritual activity in any allegedly haunted location. It really comes down to what you believe – for skeptics, bumps in the night and apparitions may be nothing more than optical illusions and natural sounds within the house, while believers of the paranormal would say its ghosts letting their presence be known. What most can agree on, however, is that there is some pretty compelling evidence that has come from this place. Numerous paranormal investigators have visited the Sallie House in hopes of finding something strange, and they do, more often than not.

If you’re still not convinced by all the evidence, why not book yourself a night at the Sallie House and see if there’s any truth to the stories!

First, let's talk about the haunted activity of Atchison. This town is located an hour northwest of Kansas City, Missouri/Kansas. It has been an attraction for paranormal hunters, brave tourists, and ghost-hunting extraordinaires. Since westward migration in the latter part of the 1800s, the town was a center for transportation and became a railroad hub.

Since the inception of these stately homes in the 19th century, bizarre happenings have occurred, and Atchison has been known for its ghostly sightings and paranormal stories. The town thrives on its seasonal haunted events, especially during the fall season. The most famous in this haunted heartland is the heartland ghost herself: the ghost of Sallie House.

The Sallie House Haunting

The most famous haunted house of all is Sallie's House, where people pay to visit for the day, and the most daring of the guests even stay overnight. The home belonged to Atchison physician Dr. Charles Finney, who had his office downstairs and his house upstairs.

One day, the story goes that a fearful mother knocked on Charles Finney's door about her 6-year-old daughter named Sallie, who was suffering severe abdominal pain. After arriving at the family's new home, the doctor quickly diagnosed Sallie with appendicitis.

Frantic that the organ would not be removed in time for the girl to live, the doctor began the surgery before the anesthesia was fully working. Her screams immediately ceased, and the girl died on the operating table. This true story has since gripped visitors and residents alike. It brings hundreds of interested people to Atchison every year to see the heartbreaking ghost story for themselves.

Sallie's House hauntings took hold of the public when a young couple (Tony and Debra Pickman) rented the home in 1993. Their dog seemed to growl at seamlessly nothing, but things began to quickly take a turn for the worse.

Gruesome attacks on the husband started, fires broke out randomly, and objects would move when the man came close to them. Tony Pickman had personal attacks against him, heard unexplained voices, had burnt finger marks from candles that somehow lit themselves, and felt random cold spots in the house.

Since then, the Kansas Paranormal Group began investigating the unexplained mysteries happening at 508 North Second Street. The paranormal investigators discovered that Sallie was not the only ghost in the home. Still, there was a middle-aged woman who seemed to be more angry and violent than Sallie.

If you are a first-time seeker of ghost adventures, Sallie House is not for the faint of heart. However, this home has been featured on multiple TV shows and networks, including the Travel Channel, A&E, The Discovery Channel, and the Syfy Channel. YouTube is also rife with amateur paranormal investigations of the Sallie House.

But don't fret if you don't have a television. Sallie House is open to the public for visitors and ghost hunters to discover the home for themselves. There are two ways to visit the Sallie House: self-guided tours and overnight stays. The self-guided tours are one hour long and cost $18/person. If you feel extra brave, you can stay the night at the haunted home starting at $125/person.

All attendees must be 18 years or older. Every guest must sign a waiver in case of personal injury (although nothing serious has happened since the Pickmans lived there in 1993). There's no waiver, however, to become a paranormal witness at the Sallie House!

Ghostbloggers: Visiting Atchison’s Sallie House

timtrudell Atchison , Kansas 1

The Sallie House. Mention this to almost anyone around Atchison, Kansas, and you’re likely to get looked in the eyes and asked if you saw anything. Considered one of the most haunted houses in the United States, the house has been featured on ghost hunting shows. Video purports to show toys moving by themselves. Men – not liked by the spirit of Sallie – have allegedly been known to have scratches randomly appear on their backs without warning. Voices have been heard. A radio in the house turns on and off by itself.

Poppycock? Is the house possessed? Maybe it’s a portal to the spiritual world? Paranormal experts believe the house to be haunted. The spirit of Sallie, a young girl, allegedly died in the kitchen. One story basically says a doctor ran his medical practice on the main level of the house, while the family residence was located on the upper floor. One night, Sallie’s mom brought her in for emergency treatment.

The doctor believed he needed to operate immediately. However, before the drugs could take effect, he started the operation. Sallie was awake as the doctor cut into her body. The young girl died a traumatic death, likely from a burst appendix. It’s believed that may be the reason why Sallie haunts the house, and the doctor may be a reason she can be violent toward men.

I’ve seen the Sallie House before, from the outside, on a previous Haunted Atchison trolley tour (during daylight). As part of a hosted trip of Haunted Atchison with other writers, I toured the house with a guide. The five of us – Travel with Sara , the HodgePodge Hippie team and our host/guide – entered the house at 508 N. 2 nd Street. It was dark, as we were taking a late night tour of the Missouri River town. Standing outside, we took photos of the house.

As I looked at my photos later, I noticed a sixth shadow to the far left of the photo. Remember, there were five of us. I figured it was the shadow of our host, but I could see her shadow against the house. This sixth shadow looked like a hand holding on to the corner of the house. A shadow of a tree limb, maybe?

As we entered the house, we were each required to sign a waiver. A waiver? For a house tour? Either this was a gimmick or we were about to get into some serious stuff. Oh, the stereo had been playing as we stood outside. Shortly after entering, it stopped. As we stood in the dining room, we looked around, as I believed we each subconsciously wanted (and didn’t want) to see something. Then, we moved on to the kitchen.

Sallie House history

It was in this room, our host told us, that Sallie fell victim during her operation. The room features a hospital slab and some props for dramatic emphasis. Then, I felt something touch my right ear. It felt like hair falling over my ear. Since I wear my hair short, it wasn’t mine. It also felt like it could have been someone – or something – touching their finger to my ear, too. As my wife can confess, I am very sensitive about people touching my ears. It happened a few times. I mentioned it to the others.

Moving to the basement, Thena from Hodgepodge Hippie may have had the right idea, stopping about halfway down the stairs, with one foot on a step up in case we needed to run. As we “investigated” the basement for spirits, we dubbed ourselves “Ghostbloggers” (patent pending). Matt, Thena’s husband, checked out a hole in one of the walls.

Soon after, Sara heard a noise. I recall hearing something, but it didn’t register. She thought it sounded like a nail being tapped on a metal chair. We all looked at the chair, assuming, I guess, it would move about or maybe hover a few inches above the ground. Nope. However, our guide had an EVP (electronic voice phenomenon) app on her phone. This app has been used by professional ghost hunters. It registers energy in the room and spirits will use that energy to form words.

Message from a spirit?

As we looked at the chair, “Closer” came across the phone. She stepped next to the chair. “Ill” came across. After that, the energy disappeared. As we looked at pictures on our phones, one of our team members noticed the outline of a face on the basement wall. That picture wasn’t on my phone. Very odd. However, we decided it was time to move on upstairs.

As we toured the top floor of the mid-1800s house, Thena’s phone randomly took photos. One was of a bed. Later, that photo was a blur, despite each of us seeing the bed pic.

After we left the house, we discussed what we saw and felt, as we tried to wrap our minds around our first known spiritual experience. Did we see a ghost? Did we actually have a paranormal experience? Can each item be logically explained? Perhaps. Perhaps not. That’s the difficulty of these types of experiences. Some people believe they’re open to the experiences, while others will flat out deny ghosts and paranormal life exist.

Spirits possible?

I left the Sallie House unsure of my beliefs. I wanted to believe what I thought we encountered, but I also hoped it wasn’t possible. I’m not sure why. I recall “dreams” so vivid that I can tell you that my Grandma Trudell sat at the end of my end one night in North Dakota and talked with me about life. Later, when my brother passed away, he visited me on his way to start his journey. He stood, looking like I remember from my childhood, with his wide-brimmed hat, trimmed with Native American art.

I recall my mom telling us about a house she and my dad lived in that was haunted. She said dishes flew out of the cupboard one night. They lived near a train track, so I thought maybe it was vibrations from a train, pushing them out on to the floor. But, she claimed they flew out of the cupboards. I don’t think my parents lived in that house more than a couple of months.

The after-life is truly unknown. We all have our beliefs, and I won’t mock someone for theirs. Did we have spiritual encounters at the Sallie House? I do know one thing: If I wasn’t a believer in the spiritual world before my visit to Atchison, I left closer to being one…and that had nothing to do with the Sallie House. A couple more experiences rocked my core (and I will share those in a later post).

Believe in spirits or not, but you can visit the Sallie House for a self-guided tour ($10 per person) on weekends through the end of October. Group tours can also be arranged. If you’re interested in trying an overnight stay, that can be booked, too (please note: People book a hotel room, too, just in case they don’t make it through the night).

Atchison, Kansas – Touring the Haunted Sallie House

Travel · Uncategorized

This past week of my life has shaken me to the core. I never knew fully if I believed in spirits or ghosts (or whatever else you want to call them), but I always felt like what I did believe was that there was a possibility. It’s kinda my motto in life…”Anything’s Possible.”

Thinking about my life of experiences that I maybe had or didn’t, I can’t really think of a time where I felt a “presence” of something truly “ghost-like” or spiritual. All that changed the night of Monday, September 10th. My husband and I, along with fellow bloggers from Travel with Sara and The Walking Tourists, were invited to Atchison, Kansas, for a Haunted Tour of the time. On our agenda? Touring the Haunted Sallie House.

While I was invited and hosted during my tour, the thoughts, opinions, and experiences are 100% my own.

The Sallie House – The Most Haunted House in America

Ask anyone in the town of Atchison, Kansas, if they know the stories that surround The Sallie House, and you won’t find a soul who doesn’t. In fact, while the town is known for many things and amazing people, such as Amelia Earhart , being haunted is one of the top reasons that people are familiar with the location of this town.

From the outside, The Sallie House looks just like any other house. White front, small porch, a few windows, and a second-floor level that appears to hold bedrooms.

If you walk around the house, you’ll also notice a small backyard and another door in the rear entrance. Sounds pretty normal, right?

Atchison Kansas, The Sallie House

It’s what happened inside that house many, many years ago that made The Sallie House what it is now.

Reports state that a male doctor used to live in the home and used the front of the home for patients while his family lived upstairs. One night, a mother and her daughter, Sally, showed up urgently needing help for little Sallie was having extreme stomach pain that couldn’t be stopped.

The male doctor had to react quickly and do what he could to help. While anesthesia was given, he had to act quicker than originally thought, meaning that little Sallie was feeling the operation trying to help her abdominal pain. (It was stated that she had appendicitis)

Unfortunately, Sallie passed away on the operating table, with her last living memory of feeling the pain was from the male doctor.

Those who have visited The Sallie House have reported a ton of different and strange things happening. Voices, cell phones having issues, footsteps going up and down the stairs…you name it. But the real kicker of what’s been reported? Scratches mysteriously appearing on the body of some men who visit the home.

Every person who visits The Sallie House will have their own experience. I fully believe that, 100%.

This is my experience, honest and true.

My Experience at The Haunted Sallie House in Atchison, Kansas

I honestly didn’t have any expectations when I knew I was going to visit The Sallie House. I was on the fence if I was a believer or not, so all I knew was that myself and my husband were planning on entering the home with an open mind.

(Between you and me…I should have mentally prepared just a little bit more. My usual cool, calm, and collected self was squealing like crazy throughout that home.)

When we entered The Sallie House, we were greeted by the radio being on, which was abnormal in itself since no one else had been there that day, and to even get in the door required a code.

Our guide quickly assured us that it was a good night apparently for some “things” to happen, and I suddenly started to feel as though we may actually be in for some spooky stuff.

Before anything could happen, everyone in our group had to sign a waiver. I’d be lying if I said I had any clue what I was signing because I was so excited to get on with the tour. We all signed quickly and were ready for the tour to begin.

Atchison Kansas, The Sallie House

Where else would we start the tour but in the kitchen, with the story of little Sallie being told? Standing in the house and hearing the story first-hand is a very, very different experience than reading it on the internet. Trust me.

Once the story was done, we immediately headed down to the basement. And when I say immediately…I mean, everyone else was in front of me, and I was the last one in line.

My husband was the first to follow the tour guide, and he was ramped up and ready to go. In my mind, I felt like the last person in line had a chance to get back upstairs quickly if needed…Smart, right?

Halfway down the stairs is where I planted my feet, while everyone else was braver, exploring the darkness of the basement.

Looking back..it would have been nice if we had had a flashlight of some sort, but none of us thought that far ahead and used the lights on our phones instead.

In the basement is a hole of sorts…ominous for sure. Reports have heard voices, etc coming from the hole in The Sallie House.

Atchison Kansas The Sallie House

Directly at the bottom of the stairs sat a metal chair. Maybe it was for guests to rest, maybe it was there for other unknown reasons…Travel with Sara stated that she heard a noise coming from the chair, almost like a tapping or hard knock.

It was at this time that our tour guide turned on her EVP (a machine that senses the energy and allows spirits and ghosts to form words to talk to humans in the vicinity). One of the first words that popped up on the screen? CLOSER.

Atchison Kansas, The Sallie House

Our brave guide and leader stepped closer to the chair. The energy level was still high at that point, and the basement became eerily quiet. None of us were taking a breath to see what was going to happen next.

Photos were being taken left and right to see if anything would show up later in pictures. During the time of the EVP saying closer, the other blogger captured these two different images with her phone.

The first shows an orb-like image surrounding the chair and our guide. (who was the one with the EVP and the one that moved closer when directed)

In the second photo…look closely. Do you see the face of the man staring back at you? I see it, 100% loud and clear. Look above the cell phone and to the left slightly. Once you see it, you’ll never unsee it.

Atchison Kansas, The Sallie House

At that moment…I’m not gonna lie, I was ready to get up those stairs. Up we went, back to the kitchen. With the EVP still on, the words were flowing as well. Words such as “crucifix” popped up on the screen as we all just stared in disbelief.

Another blogger felt something breathing or blowing air on him in the kitchen. It was enough for me to start thinking that we honestly weren’t alone in this house.

It was at that moment that my phone started to go crazy. Now, let me point out that I don’t have the latest and greatest phone by any means…It’s old but get’s the job done, which is all I can really ask.

As I was standing in the room, watching the lights from the EVP go crazy, letting us know that something or someone was in the room with us, my phone started randomly taking pictures. In fact, it took 3 pictures right in a row, all without me pushing a button.

I can’t explain it, I don’t know why…but something was making my camera go off on the phone. That alone was enough to prompt me to head up the stairs, to the areas of the room where people get the most “activity.”

Up the stairs we went, but again, I really felt as though we weren’t alone in that house. We toured each room but didn’t seem to have a lot of activity for the most part.

During the last bedroom, my phone began to act funky again, and another random picture was taken. The odd part? It took a picture of the bed in the room to which I showed the rest of the people on the tour.

Later that night, as I was looking through my photos, the photo was a complete blur of blue…100% different than the picture that was stored on my phone during the tour of The Sallie House.

Did that photo get erased or manipulated by Sallie or someone else in the house? I have to believe so since I saw the original.

We all agreed that it was time to depart, and we thanked the home for its time and left. We all honestly took a moment and just stood out on the street, staring at the house. We all had experiences, heard things, felt things, and just had that “feeling” that we will never forget.

Taking a tour of a real haunted house as an adult is a much different experience than when you were a kid. None of us were trying to scare each other or be silly.

We were all there for the same reason, to see if the stories that swirled around The Sallie House were true.

Do you believe in Orbs?

Those who believe in ghosts often speak about orbs or “floating objects” that appear in pictures signaling that spirits are surrounding a location.

Before our trip to Atchison, Kansas, I’d never thought twice about an orb, ever.

Whether these “floating” objects are orbs or not is up to you to decide and believe, but these are just a few of the shots that my husband caught of the aura outside and around The Sallie House.

The Sallie House

Our time at The Sallie House is one that I’ll never forget. I’ve found myself thinking about my time in the house and feel that I do believe that the stories aren’t just “tall tales.”

There is something about that home. There is something that draws people in and makes them keep coming back for more.

Are you brave enough to take a tour of The Sallie House? Would you stay all night if given the chance?

Both options are available and are a must for all the thrill-seekers and curious people of the world. Don’t delay in booking because the tours and overnights fill up quickly. Book your tickets and tours HERE.

My final thoughts about our tour of The Sallie House? I’m a believer. The signals and experiences that happened there were too raw and true to not be real.

Sallie house, kansas’ most haunted house will give you chills.

The Sallie House has not just been called the most haunted house in Kansas, but the most haunted house in the entire nation. Why, you ask? Well, it may have something to do with the rumors that tell of a little girl named Sallie and how she met her tragic demise at the hands of a surgeon’s botched surgery right inside the home.

Built in the mid-1800s in Atchison, Kansas, the home is located at 508 N. Second Street and has seen its fair share of history throughout the years. Passing hands multiple times, the home is rumored to have once housed a little girl named Sallie, who actually died in the home during a wildly unsuccessful makeshift appendicitis surgery.

But it wasn’t until the mid-1990s that Sallie’s tragic story gained local and national attention. Then-owners Debra and Tony Pickman began to notice strange occurrences in the home, including attacks on Tony, unexplained voices, and even finger marks on candles that light themselves.

So, who is haunting the Sallie House? Could it just be the spirit of Sallie herself? Some believe that there’s more to the story — including reports of a middle-aged woman who is said to be behind the frightening attacks.

History of the Sallie House

Built in the 1800s, the home has three bedrooms and two bathrooms, a modest home, filled with ghosts. It was built for Michael Finney and his family who lived in the home until 1947. Four members of the Finney family died of natural causes in the home throughout the years, and the home housed multiple families during its time. None, however, would be as memorable as the Pickmans.

This young couple, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, bought the home in the 1990s. They soon started to experience strange, sometimes even violent occurrences in the home. These days, the home sits as a spectacle, a macabre attraction for ghost investigators hoping to solve the mysteries of the home.

Beginning of the Hauntings at the Sallie House

The home has been said to be the location of almost every type of ghostly activity. Apparitions, disembodied voices, objects moving on their own, shadow people, attacks, you name it. This could be why the home has gained much media coverage over the last twenty years. The home has even been featured on popular television shows such as A Haunting , Unexplained Mysteries, Ghost Adventures , and Sightings .

The activity has been so severe at times that some believe the hauntings in the Sallie House could be demonic in nature. Others believe that the Sallie House is home to a ‘portal’ of sorts, that allows entities from the spirit world to enter our physical realm.

Regardless of what lies behind the walls of the home, there’s one thing everyone agrees on — the home is extremely haunted.

People have stated that they have seen the apparition of a young girl for themselves, who many believe is Sallie, as well as the apparition of an older woman standing in the windows. Candles are known to light and burn on their own, objects pick up and move through the air on their own, and others have reported disembodied voices of men, women, and children. Scratching on the walls at night is commonplace, alongside the sounds of furniture being moved around. There have even been reports of more physical attacks and possessions.

History of Sallie

Though the home is referred to as the Sallie House, there’s no steadfast proof that a girl named Sallie ever resided there. However, there are reports of a man named Dr. Charles Finney owning the home and operating his office out of the first floor of the residence. The legend of Sallie arose when Dr. Finney attempted to perform emergency surgery on Sallie, which resulted in her death.

Two versions of the Sallie story exist, one being that a woman rushed to her ailing 6-year-old after the girl was complaining of severe abdominal pain. When Dr. Finney realized that the girl’s appendix was on the verge of rupture, he opted to perform her surgery at his residence — without any anesthetics. She later died on the operating table.

In the other version, Sallie was born as a result of an affair that Dr. Finney was having. When the little girl became ill, her mother brought her to Finney, since he would not allow her to go to the hospital for fear that his extramarital affairs would be exposed. Instead, he performed her emergency surgery himself.

While the Sallie story can’t be confirmed, it’s no legend that the home has seen its fair share of dark events.

A Darkness Unfolds

It was discovered in the early 2000s that a pentagram was drawn on the basement floor of the home. Satanic ritualistic remnants have even been discovered, as well as a luminol test that was performed, which highlighted signs of blood spatter in the closet of the master bedroom.

Luminol is a substance that highlights the proteins found in blood underneath a black light.

The Sallie House’s Current Hauntings

After Tony and Debbie Pickman moved in, a month passed without activity. Once they began to settle into their new home, lights started to dim on their own, and animals began to act strangely. After the birth of their son, the activity picked up even more, and strange molds grew on household items.

At one point, the couple even returned home from a day out to find all of the nursery’s stuffed animals in a circle on the floor. That night, Tony began to feel intense burning on his back and it was later discovered that he had three significant scratches running down his spine.

After learning the home’s history and about the story of Sallie, the Pickman’s attempt to embrace Sallie as a sort of phantom daughter. Soon after, the attacks on Tony continued. During their child’s birthday party, a doll even caught on fire for no apparent reason.

After two years of being assaulted mentally and physically in the home, the Pickman’s finally moved out. Debbie Pickman now believes that Sallie was not the spirit of a little girl, but a malevolent entity posing as a child in order to gain the trust of the family — for what reason, we’ll never know.

The Sallie House Today

These days, ownership of the house is tricky, but according to the official Sallie House website , Les Smith Jr. has been the actual owner of the home for over 20 years. Those who dare to enter the home can take a tour, or even stay the night in the home. ( Just like staying at the Lizzie Borden House! )

You can stay at a haunted mansion in Atchison, Kansas — but the spirits might ghost you

Stephanie O'Reilly stands in front of the brick two-story McInteer Villa. it is decorated with skeletons, including a skeletal horse pulling a carriage with a skeletal passenger.

Since being built in 1889, the McInteer Villa has been the location of nine documented deaths. Stephanie O'Reilly bought the mansion in 2018 and outfitted it to take visitors back in time.

When Stephanie O’Reilly learned that the haunted Victorian house at 1301 Kansas Ave. was for sale, she drove by it out of curiosity.

Over and over she found herself driving an hour from her home in Lawrence to look at the McInteer Villa in Atchison. She felt an almost otherworldly attraction to the property.

“I’m not obsessed with anything,” O’Reilly said. “But there was something about his house.”

She joked with her parents about the notion of co-signing on the house. To her surprise, her dad said yes.

In early 2018 they bought the house.

Since then, O’Reilly has brought the house back in time, filling it with period-appropriate décor, opening its doors to the public and experiencing quite a few spooks herself.

“Some people go into it like: ‘Who’s here? Why are you here? Are you stuck here? How did you die? What is your name? What year is it?’ ” O’Reilly said of the paranormal investigation field. “I just like to be scared.”

Stephanie O’Reilly bought the McInteer Villa in 2018 and invites anyone to stay and experience the haunted mansion.

The story of McInteer Villa

A wooden fireplace mantel inside the McInteer Villa is decorated with skulls, flowers, decorative balls and a tiny birdcage holding a light-up cat ball. It has a candle on either end.

The McInteer Villa was built in 1889 by John McInteer, a successful manufacturer of saddles and harnesses.

McInteer lived there with his family until he died in 1902. His second wife continued living in the house with various members of her family until the death of her brother, Charles Conlon.

The villa was then a boarding house for 25 years and had one more owner before the Gerardy family bought it in 1969. O’Reilly bought the house from the Gerardy children, and regularly calls them up with new discoveries to see if they are similar to something their mother experienced.

Over the course of its existence, the house has been the location of nine documented deaths. O’Reilly said some paranormal experts have said the house is home to a “portal,” which would account for the large number of different spirits encountered throughout the house.

“I don’t know,” O’Reilly said with a shrug and a laugh.

Others have also suggested that the large basement of the house (which has seven different, brick-walled rooms) was once home to a secret clinic performing medical procedures on women.

Footsteps, voices, babies crying, a creaking rocking chair, figures in the windows, cabinets that open after they’ve been closed, a shadow figure in the hallway. That’s just a partial list of the (para)normal activity at the McInteer House.

The McInteer House is open for overnight stays, self-guided tours during the day, and guided tours by O’Reilly for certain events.

Almost every weekend is booked throughout the year, and just about every day during the haunted season of September and October.

O’Reilly has cameras posted in some of the common rooms of the house, which can pick up electric voice phenomenons (EVPs) and other phenomena. Many of these, she posts to the McInteer social media accounts.

She also has cat toys scattered around the house. The toys, which light up when touched, often go off without being touched (by a human), alerting to the presence of a ghost.

A cat ball in the small bird cage on the mantle, lights up to let visitors know a ghost has drifted by. (Cami Koons | Flatland)

Flatland sat at the dining room table of the villa with O’Reilly for an interview. Early on in the conversation an alarm on the table sounded, another indicator that a ghost (or something) had touched it. At other times the conversation stopped due to an unexplained creaking or a tapping.

Believer in the paranormal or not, a visit to the McInteer Villa leads one to question every little noise and movement.

Haunted Atchison

Atchison is just an hour north of Kansas City. It’s a quaint town along the Missouri River with just over 10,000 people.

It’s famous as the birthplace of Amelia Earhart, and as home to one of the nation’s most haunted houses .

A little over a mile from McInteer Villa sits the Sallie House , a famously haunted attraction that has appeared on a number of paranormal investigation shows, and is currently owned and operated by the city.

Mary Jane Sowers, the event coordinator for Locally Atchison, said haunted tourism has been thriving in town for well over a decade.

Attractions include the Sallie House, McInteer Villa, events at the Raven Hearse Manor and a trolley tour between all of the haunts.

The haunted trolley ride only occurs during the haunted season on the weekends. Sowers said it’s always a big hit.

“We sell out so fast and completely sell out,” Sowers said.

Each season the haunted trolley brings about 1,000 people to each of the haunted houses in town.

A skeleton dressed in a flight cap, goggles and flight jacket sits in an old leather chair next to a candelabra.

The city benefits from the profits of the trolley and from ticket sales at the Sallie House. Local businesses and services in Atchison benefit from the visitors during the haunted season as many will eat a meal in town, fuel up, do some shopping or stay the night.

“It works out really (well),” Sowers said. “But we all three (the Chamber, McInteer and Raven Hearse) work together really well.”

The haunted tourism complements other tourism in town. Sowers said a lot of folks who come for haunted attractions will also stop at the Amelia Earhart birthplace museum, Muchnic art gallery or other attractions in town.

“Atchison is a very, very fun town, it’s quiet, cozy, homey,” Sowers said.

What it's like to visit McInteer Villa

“Cozy” and “homey” are not exactly the words that come to mind when thinking of a house infested with ghosts.

But that’s exactly how long-time ghost hunter Melissa Johosky describes McInteer Villa.

She’s investigated and slept in some of the nation’s spookiest spots like Malvern Manor in Iowa, Myrtles Plantation in Louisiana and many of the other big-name haunted locations.

“I’ve been to a bunch,” Johosky said. “But out of everywhere that I have been, McInteer Villa is hands down my favorite.”

Melissa Johosky, on the right in a red top with sparkly thread, poses with her husband, on the left in a gray Bass Pro Shops t-shirt and glasses, at McInteer Villa.

Since the first time she set foot in the grand house at 1301 Kansas Ave., Johosky said it has felt like home. She’s since been back at least 20 times, and has made it a regular, family gathering place.

“McInteer is really the only place I walk into and I feel like I’m home,” Johosky said. “It’s the only place I feel like I have a connection with.”

Part of that is the beauty of the house. It has a wrap around porch, tower with a classic conical roof, bay windows and a brick façade with contrasting details.

It’s exactly what one would expect a haunted mansion to look like, only this one is actually haunted.

“I don’t know that I’ve ever been there that I haven’t had something paranormal happen,” Johosky said.

Johosky typically hears footsteps up and down the stairs and hallways, hears voices, and on one occasion, her niece got scratched at the villa.

She recalled a visit when one person in the group was listening to a ghost box with headphones. A ghost box, or spirit box, according to Spirit Shack, is a device that scans AM and FM frequencies to generate white noise. In the white noise, spirits can speak, allowing real-time communication with the ghosts in the room.

Through the spirit box, they heard what sounded like a conversation between two young children, who kept saying “You touch it, it’s on his hip.” “No, you touch it,” the other would reply.

Those listening to the box didn’t know what the ghosts were talking about. But they later came to find out that her husband, who was in the room, had a concealed carry gun on his hip.

“It was really creepy,” Johosky said.

Some of her strongest paranormal experiences have been in the villa’s unfinished basement.

Johosky and her closest friend sat in chairs back to back with one another. Each had on a blindfold and headphones playing white noise so they couldn’t hear the other. This is another common practice in paranormal investigations.

Johosky said she kept seeing visions of bodies of water, which kept getting larger and larger. At the end of the experience, she learned that just behind her, her friend felt like she was drowning. The feeling was so intense that the friend passed out and had to be taken outside.

a black-and-white photo of two skeletal hands poking out of a square cutout in a brick wall.

O’Reilly embraces both period-appropriate and spooky décor throughout the house. Here, skeleton hands emerge from a mysterious hole in the basement. (Cami Koons | Flatland)

“My best friend to this day will not go back in that room,” Johosky said. “It was very intense. It was very weird, but it was also cool.”

As much as she loves the house and feels at home, Johosky is still afraid of the spirits in the home. That’s part of the fun.

“I would not go to any part of that house by myself for any extended period of time,” Johosky said.

O’Reilly maintains a healthy amount of skepticism for everything she hears. She believes in the experiences of others, but prefers to experience things for herself.

“I tell them, ‘Oh my god, that’s so crazy,’ ” O’Reilly said.

But usually, she’ll soon experience a similar interaction, or hear from others who had similar experiences in the same places.

She welcomes everyone into the house, even the skeptics.

“I enjoy the skeptics here because when you’re not looking for it, that’s sometimes when it happens,” O’Reilly said.

Quirks of the trade

As active as her house is, O’Reilly can’t guarantee that folks will have a paranormal experience.

Ghosts, as it turns out, are unreliable employees.

“I can’t schedule an appearance,” O’Reilly laughed. “If I could schedule an appearance, I’d be raking it in.”

Her dad, who went in on the house with her, passed away 2 years ago, but he’s still a part of the business.

She keeps his ashes upstairs in the house. Sometimes she’ll walk by, tap the case and say, “Dad, stir s--t up.”

“One, it keeps me from crying,” O’Reilly laughed. “Two, he would find that funny. And three, it’s a business, so stir s--t up.”

Just like she can’t schedule an appearance, she can’t turn the ghosts off.

Sometimes a family pays to stay the night but only lasts a couple of hours. She remembered one family who had to leave after several hours of the cat balls lighting up.

“They didn’t get here until like 7:30 and were out by 10,” O’Reilly said. “I felt bad, but they were freaked out. I knew when the cat balls were freaking them out that anything else that would happen that night was just going to be too much.”

But she gets it. The house has been too much for her at times too.

“There are times, I just want to go home,” she said. “It’s super uncomfortable when the sun goes down and you’re by yourself. It’s a whole different feel.”

O'Reilly stands to the right of a fireplace decorated with ornamental spiderwebs, gourds and other fall decorations

Her house is haunted year round, but O’Reilly changes her decorations to fit the seasons. She said the spirits are always very active on the days she redecorates. (Cami Koons | Flatland)

Sometimes, the upstairs is too unnerving for her, and she’s waited to finish cleaning until the guests for the night arrived.

“I mean, it’s my house, and that’s what I paid for,” O’Reilly said. “But I want other people to experience and send me pictures and video.”

As she gave a tour, she recounted some of the things that other visitors had seen in one room or another.

“Nope. I’m okay, I don’t need to see that, ” she’d say about some of the spookiest stories, and laugh.

Hidden, haunted gem

Johosky hasn’t been inside the famous Sallie House that’s just down the street. To her, McInteer is just more inviting. Even if folks don’t have a paranormal experience at the villa, they get to stay in a beautiful historic house.

“People are missing (out), I mean, it’s like a hidden gem,” Johosky said. “The ghosts are just a bonus.”

Her biggest piece of advice to any first time ghost hunters visiting McInteer Villa: Sit in silence.

“Listen to the house come alive, and make noises,” Johosky said. “You’ll hear things that really catch you off guard.”

She also recommended that folks take lots of pictures and take them in bursts of three at a time. It’s common to see something move across the three images.

In her many visits to the house, Johosky has admired O’Reilly’s care for the house and cheery personality.

“I just think she is a breath of fresh air for the paranormal field,” Johosky said. “She’s not all serious (or) high strung about it … she can have fun with it.”

Johosky also noted O’Reilly’s passion for paranormal experiences. Not only does she travel to other haunted houses, but she continues to explore her own.

“She loves that house,” Johosky said. “That house has her heart, and she just wants to share it with everyone.”

The Sallie House- America’s Most Haunted House

I recently visited what is often referred to as the most haunted house in America, The Sallie House in Atchison, Kansas. Full Disclosure: I was a guest on a fully guided tour of this house on a dark evening in September 2018. I went in as a total skeptic of all things haunted and exited on the fence, but close to believing.

Outside Sallie House

ENTERING THE MOST HAUNTED HOME IN AMERICA: THE SALLIE HOUSE

Upon entering, the radio was playing and we were all ushered into the dining room where we each had to sign a waiver. It was at that point I began to wonder what I was doing in this house. I signed the waiver and our tour began.

Sallie House Waiver

Keep in mind, this is not a mansion. The Sallie House is a basic two-story home built in the mid-1800’s with a basement.

The living room and dining room had an aura about them, but I still can’t pinpoint what it was. Our tour began in the kitchen where Sallie’s story began. It’s fair to say that a young girl died in the home due to a ruptured appendix. I quickly learned that there are good ghosts and bad ghosts. The bad ghosts live where people have died in unusual situations. This seemed fairly straightforward to me, as it was in terms that made sense to me. Good ghosts live where people have passed away peacefully while surrounded by people that love them or alone in peace. It’s when things go bad in death, that the ghosts become on the bad side.

THE BASEMENT AT THE SALLIE HOUSE

We ventured down to the basement and realized a flashlight may have been good to have in our hands. Thank goodness for smartphones and the built-in flashlights. If there is one piece of advice I would give someone visiting the Sallie House, it’s to be sure your smartphone has a good charge on it upon entering. In fact, one of the people touring the house with me was  Hodge Podge Hippie and her phone took random photos throughout the whole tour of the Sallie House.

While down in the basement, I heard what sounded like a tack pressing on metal. I turned my light towards where it came from and there was a metal chair near the sound. I glanced around at our feet and nobody had feet near it. At this point I thought, why not take a few photos? I tried to take several photos and my phone would not take a photo. Upon pressing the button a dozen or so times, I was finally able to take three photos. As it would turn out, these three photos were very interesting and I will let you be the judge of what you think we all witnessed in the basement of the Sallie House. It did not take long for me to be convinced that someone else was there with us. I did not use a flash in any of these photos.

FULL BELIEVER IN THE SALLIE HOUSE

A skeptic I was, but no more. The next day in Atchison would make me a full believer, and that story will be coming. The Sallie House in Atchison, Kansas is a must visit for anyone curious about paranormal activity and what makes up the world of ghost hunting. This whole adventure was fascinating and eye-opening to me.

I was not surprised to learn that most people who plan to spend the night, do not. It is really interesting to me that there are individuals that thrive on the haunted experiences and Atchison, Kansas is a definite crowd pleaser when it comes to haunted experiences.

All inquiries to explore the Sallie House should be made through here.

Personal tours, as well as self-guided tours, are available. I would also highly recommend the Haunted Trolley Tours that run through the Fall season. This tour offers insight into all of the haunted places in Atchison, Kansas.
