Echo Trip Fly Rod Review

What is great about fly fishing is that there is a toy for every situation . If you are like me, there is a fly rod for every occasion. One particularly fun fly fishing rod that came out this year is the Echo Trip. The company Echo Fly Fishing is known industry wide to design outstanding fly rods with a creative spin. What also sets Echo apart in the fly fishing industry is the fact that all Echo Rods can be purchased by any fishermen. You don’t have to bring home a six figure income to own an Echo rod. The Echo Trip is an eight piece travel rod that comes in quite handy in many fishing applications. I’ve have had the opportunity to fish and review the Echo Trip Fly Rod and used it to instruct fly fishing.

Initial Thoughts on the Echo Trip Fly Rod

The Echo Trip Fly rod is an 8 piece travel fly rod that comes in three line weights of 5, 6, and 8. As far as I know, I have not seen any companies design fly rods that have more sections than this one. The length of all the Echo Trip fly rods, including the five weight that I was testing, is 9 feet in length. The color of the blank used in the 5 and 6 weights is dark green. The grip of the rod is made from cork and is a traditional Western style seen in many fly rods in the smaller weights. The rod has lightweight snake and low friction stripper guides as well.

Echo Trip Fly Rod Sections

The action of the Echo Trip Fly Rod is marketed as a medium fast action fly rod and in comparison to the other single handed fly rods that are designed by Echo Fly Fishing this rod falls towards the slower action side of the graphite fly rods.

The Echo Trip Fly Rod comes with a rod tube and rod sock. The rod tube is made from plastic with a nylon cover and zipper to open and close. Attached to the rod tube is an adjustable carrying strap.

Field Testing the Echo Trip Fly Rod

Although geared with 8 pieces as a travel rod the Echo Trip is a fantastic all around rod. This spring I fished the Echo Trip as my main fly rod on lakes, rivers, high country, and even used it during fly fishing instruction and was quite impressed with the performance.

The Echo Trip is a medium action fly rod. It is marked as a medium fast, but I would say straight up medium. When casting the Echo Trip loads smoothly deep into the rod. The lower section is where the power comes from.  Also this rod is incredibly easy to cast. There is a large sweet spot and makes casting effortless. This rod is would be perfect for a beginner, but is also nice for more advanced anglers. Often new fly fishers purchase or use fly rods that they struggle cast because of the flex. As an instructor, this rod was great to get into new fly fishers hands. Within minutes, these novices were loading the rod well and casting with ease. It is amazing how the right rod makes instructing so easy.

Echo Trip Fly Rod Review

I found the Echo Trip a fun rod to fish.  Obviously, where portability was a factor the Echo Trip was outstanding. It’s nice to be able to put it in the backpack hassle free and it packs down small enough that it is easy to carry with you anywhere. When biking into work, I could easily carry this rod with me. The Echo Trip could really give new meaning to “Working Late.”

Setting up the Echo Trip takes a little bit longer due to the many pieces. Echo has small dots on the ends of each section that show where to line up the sections. Once together the rod fished as well as four piece rods I spend most of my time with.

Echo Trip Section Dots

Although a medium action rod, the Echo Trip had more than enough power to bring in large fish. There is good lower section power on it. Even hot 20 inch rainbows were outmatched. This rod was equally at home casting small dry flies to small brook trout and grayling. Small fish were equally fun to play. The 5 weight really is a pretty versatile trout rod capable of throwing indicator rigs, small streamers, and dry flies.

The aesthetics of this rod are nice. The cork handle is built well and looks great. The reel seat is black and pairs nicely with the dark green rod. The chrome snake guides look sharp and match nicely with the dark stripping guides.

Echo Trip Stripping Guide

One thing that I did have to pay attention to is that with all of those pieces, I felt like I had to check my ferrules often to make sure none of the pieces were coming loose. In the past, I have broken rods due to the sections coming apart when casting. This didn’t happen often, but I definitely made sure to keep them in check.

The Echo Trip pairs up nicely with the 5 weight Airflo Bandit line. This a super cool fly line that casts well on medium action fly rods. The most unique feature to this fly line is that the first twelve feet is alternating two tone with olive and brown. This line was developed for fishing in New Zealand where trout are spooky and will shy away from noticeable lines.

Airflo Bandit is perfect with Echo Trip

This line is perfect here in the West especially here in a mountain resort town where trout are heavily pressured. Every advantage is important. This camo line could be a game changer when fishing where trout may see hundreds of flies over a weekend.

Another feature that I like is how smooth this line casts and lays down. The long taper allows for big casts with dry flies. Casts lay down with little disturbance and it is the perfect line for fishing dries or small nymphs. My largest fish on this rod and line came when fishing in a shallow pond. This fish came in to feed late in the evening and was swimming in six inches of water. I was able to make a long and accurate cast right to this fish without spooking it. I am convinced that the camo and long taper made this fish possible.

A couple good fish caught with the Echo Trip

Like all Airflo floating lines the Bandit line uses SuperDri technology that allows the fly line to float high in the water as well as repel grit and mud. The other characteristic of Airflo lines is that they are made from Polytetrafluoroethylene. This material has low friction and allows the line to move effortlessly through the guides.

Final Thoughts

The five weight Echo Trip is a great all around medium action trout rod. With eight sections, this rod can be taken anywhere. It fits easily into any backpack and is ideal for hiking into remote waters. Although a travel rod, it is a solid all around fly rod. It is perfect for fishing lakes rivers and can fish nymphs, streamers, and dries. When fishing the Echo Trip, it matches perfectly with the new Airflo Bandit line. The Airflo Bandit is the ideal floating fly line for to use with fish that spook easily. The camo head and long taper allow for long stealthy casts. If you are looking for a new rod or even a new backup rod the Echo Trip paired with the Airflo Bandit line should make your short list. Best 5 Weight Fly Rods: 5wt Showdown

Fly anglers in the market for an excellent 5wt rod are spoiled for choices.

Often considered “all-arounders,”  5wt rods are a great option for minimalists as well as anyone who wants a rod that’s capable in the vast majority of situations. Trout, panfish, smallmouth bass, and even largemouth and other similarly-sized species can be landed on a 5wt, and though they may be heavier than ideal for euro nymphing, they’ll accomplish most of what an angler needs.

If you’re looking for a new 5wt fly rod, keep reading. Below, you’ll find reviews of some of our favorites, as well as a complete buying guide:

Best 5wt Fly Rods Reviewed

Sage trout ll - best 5wt dry-fly rod.

Amazon   | Bass Pro | Cabela's

Material: graphite/resin KonneticHD

Action: medium

Length: 8’ 6”

Weight: 5wt

Almost forgotten in the wake of the popularity of euro nymphing, a true dry-fly rod like the Sage Trout LL will remind you of why a perfectly-executed medium action is a thing of beauty. Armed with the latest blank technology and sporting a refined taper that’s nothing short of magical, this just may be the perfect 5 wt dry fly rod.

While Sage offers a 9-foot variant of the Trout LL, it’s hard to argue with a shorter rod that almost disappears in your hand while casting the tightest loops you’ve ever seen. Overhanging vegetation has met its match with this rod, and within 50 feet or so, I doubt any rod can drop a dry fly on the surface with a better presentation or greater accuracy.

Yes, it’s that good.

Truly a dream to cast, whether you’re just getting started or are a veteran of cold streams, this Sage casts dry flies and droppers to the absolute limit of your ability - and then some.

The taper on this rod is a masterclass for other manufacturers, and from surprising backbone near the handle to easy timing, fighting and false casts feel like nothing you’ve fished before.

Expect a Fuji ceramic stripper guide, perfectly executed ferrules, a beautiful reel seat, and in-hand feel that rivals any rod on the market. If you’re in search of an amazing 5 wt to target rising trout, panfish, and smallmouth bass, I’m confident that you’ll be delighted with the Sage Trout LL.

Pros:

  • Awesome blank technology delivers amazing casting and presentation
  • Ultra-light in-hand weight
  • Forgiving medium-fast action
  • Top-end components and excellent aesthetics
  • Not a euro nymphing rod

Winston AIR 2 - Best 5wt All-Around Fly Rod

Amazon   | Winstons

Material: graphite/resin composite

Action: medium-fast

There’s no question about the effectiveness of euro nymphing, but specialty rods designed just for this application suffer as all-arounders.

Enter the Winston AIR 2.

Equipped with a 9-foot composite blank with a medium-fast taper and a stiff tip, the AIR 2 excels in tight line techniques and can launch nymphs capably to medium distances. Streamers are no less effectively lofted by this rod, and dry flies and droppers land effortlessly, too. While not the perfection for dry flies that the Sage Trout LL has proven itself to be, the Winston AIR 2 is a better one rod to rule them all, especially if you’ve already mastered the fundamentals.

Extremely light in hand, the AIR 2 is a very capable wet fly rod, perfect for soft hackle flies, indicators, and heavier nymphs. Capable of greater range than the Trout LL, it’s probably better in a hard fight, too, as the backbone feels stouter.

The cigar handles, stripper guides, ferrules, and reel seat are masterfully crafted, and this rod’s aesthetics are wonderful.

If you need a high-end all-arounder, the Winston AIR 2 may just be the best there is.

  • Stiffer action allows for tight line techniques, wet fly presentation, droppers, and indicators
  • Not as good with dry flies as the Sage Trout LL

Thomas and Thomas Zone - Best Mid-Range 5wt Fly Rod

Amazon   | Thomas and Thomas

Material: graphite/resin composite with StratoTherm Resin technology

Thomas and Thomas are known for their uncompromising high-end rods, but the Zone demonstrates that with the right know-how and design philosophy, a medium-range rod can match the performance of options beyond the price range of many anglers.

The Zone’s blank sports the same tech that the Avantt and Exocett employ, and you can feel that on your first cast. A true medium-fast action that offers excellent feel, it casts ably to about 60 feet, and as you’d expect from a 9-foot rod, offers delicate presentations in close to about 20 feet.

The Zone is probably at its best with dry flies, though streamers and soft-hackled flies aren’t beyond its capabilities. It’s very light in hand, and the half-wells grip is comfortable and fatigue reducing.

Its blank offers plenty of fight for big fish, and I’d feel confident playing a big brown trout in a strong current.

Expect really well-executed components, like a ceramic/titanium stripper guide and solid reel seat.

If there’s one criticism of the Zone - and you may have heard this before - it’s aesthetic. The blue theme doesn’t please the eye as it should, and there’s no competition with the Trout LL and AIR 2 in terms of looks.

That said, there’s no beating the price-to-performance ratio of the Zone, and if you’re in the market for a capable all-rounder that won’t leave your wallet empty, this rod deserves a closer look.

  • Great price-to-performance ratio
  • Awesome high-end blank technology delivers amazing casting and presentation
  • Excellent moderate-fast action
  • Not as good with nymphs and streamers as the Winston AIR 2

Sage Foundation Fly Outfit - Best 5 wt Fly-Fishing Combo

Material: graphite

Action: fast

If you watch two fly anglers making false casts, mending, or flipping a long leader - and one of them struggles while the other makes everything look like child’s play - that difference is the result of the better angler having perfected foundational skills.

And while there are many excellent fly-fishing outfits out there, none in our view surpass Sage’s Foundation for anglers who already have a solid base of skills.

The Foundation’s blank is very stiff, and the graphite is tapered to create fast action that’s perfect for experienced anglers who switch between dry and wet flies. Especially if you need an all-arounder that’s capable of tight line techniques like nymphing, the Foundation is as close to perfect as you’ll find.

Medium-range casts are wind-bucking, accurate, and easy to manage for an angler with the requisite skill, but of course the fast action makes short-range casting more challenging. With that in mind, however, anglers with years on the water will be able to launch streamers and other wet flies respectable distances or loft nymphs up stream before working them back down the current.

Dry fly casting is acceptable, too, but that stiff, fast action is more suited to nymphing than gentle presentation.

Expect well-executed guides and a comfortable, fatigue-reducing handle.

Sage pairs these rods with their outstanding Spectrum C Fly Reel. Known for its reliable drag system and capacious arbor, it’s a great reel in its own right and a fantastic addition to this outfit.

Sage’s Foundation is an exceptional outfit for experienced anglers and a more than capable backup to specialty rods.

  • Excellent fast blank
  • High-quality components
  • Casts well at all but short distances
  • Paired with the excellent Spectrum C reel
  • The action is better suited to experienced anglers than those trying to build skills

Echo Trip - Best 5wt Travel Fly Rod

Fish USA | Amazon | Echo Trip

If you’ve ever been traveling and passed the perfect trout stream, you know exactly why a compact, capable travel rod is such an amazing idea. The Echo Trip is among our favorites, and the 5 wt makes an ideal companion when you’re not sure what you’ll come up against.

All-arounders really shine on the road, where the conditions favor versatility over hyper-specialization, and the Trip is good enough that you’ll forget it’s actually a travel rod.

In hand, the Trip feels slower than medium-fast, and it flexes to very near the handle when casting. Anglers newer to the water will find the Trip supports skill building, allowing plenty of feel and easier timing than a faster blank. It loads and casts dry flies really well, allowing delicate presentations and covering short- as well as medium-range casting.

The 5wt demonstrates plenty of backbone close to the handle, and the soft action works well to cushion fragile tippet and leader. Indeed, I really like the Trip for hard-fighting smallmouth, tossing a variety of poppers, dry flies, and streamers to them in quiet eddies and vodka-clear pools.

Expect an anodized aluminum reel seat and stainless guides, with fit and finish being uniformly very good.

But while the Trip excels with a variety of wet and dry flies, it’s not going to be a good choice for euro nymphing, where a fast action and a stiff rod tip are essential. That said, it’s a capable jack of all trades that won’t let you down on your adventures far from home.

  • Packs down really small
  • Excellent blanks with a medium action perfect for experienced as well as novice fy anglers
  • Excellent casting with dry and wet flies
  • Plenty of fight-winning backbone
  • Not an excellent choice for euro nymphing, as the action is too soft for tight-line techniques

Temple Fork Outfitters NXT Black Label - Best 5 wt. Fly Rod for Beginners

Amazon   | Black Label

Material: ?

Weight: 5wt.

Temple Fork Outfitters is incredibly invested in the sport through education programs. Backing schools that teach novice anglers the ins and outs of fly fishing, their long-term experience with people who’ve never held a fly rod before really shines through in the NXT Black Label.

Described as “the gold standard for fly fishing schools and educational programs across the United States,” the 5wt NXT Black Label has a strong claim to be the best novice fly rod, hands down.

TFO knows that fundamentals are everything. They also understand that while euro nymphing is amazingly effective, the stiff rods that are required for tight lines techniques make casting and other basic skills very difficult for novices.

That’s why you’ll find that the 5wt NXT Black Label sports a medium-fast blank that transmits plenty of feel to your hand. You'll really know when the rod loads on the back cast, making it easier to learn to time your casts. It drops flies on to the water with finesse, offering delicate presentations rather than unsubtle plops. And it loads deeply, allowing long casts even on breezy days.

As a medium- to short-range dry fly rod, the NXT Black Label really excels, delivering better casting performance than it should in the hands of someone who’s just learning their way around a fly rod. And when put through its paces by a pro, expect gentle presentations, plenty of range, and startling accuracy.

Dry flies, streamers, droppers: this rod can do it all, and do it all well.

Obviously, this is a great rod for learning the fundamentals of the sport, but it’s sufficiently excellent that it may be a long while until you outgrow its performance.

And if that weren’t enough, it’s also affordably priced.

  • Affordable price!
  • Outstanding performance for the money
  • Casts well, even into the wind

Buying Guide: What To Look for in a 5wt Rod

Why 5wt versatility.

5wt rods are the daily drivers of fly angling, offering reliable performance with a wide range of flies and techniques, and holding their own in fights with everything from panfish to largemouth bass.

As such, manufacturers tend to shy away from specialty 5wt rods, reserving true euro nymphing rods for the 3 and 4wts and stout, hard-fighting blanks for the 6wts and heavier.

Versatility is the watchword for 5wts, though like the unbeatable Sage Trout LL, they may still be better at some applications than others, while allowing you to work gin-clear streams and lily-choked ponds with one rod.

Graphite and graphite/resin composites are the dominant materials in 5wt blanks.

5wt rods are uniformly manufactured from graphite and graphite/resin composites.

Typically very light in hand, graphite and graphite composites offer unrivaled stiffness and strength, while translating energy to your hand directly. Excellent feel, predictable loading, and amazing casting are the hallmarks of good blank tech, and 5wt rods push these materials to their limits.

All other things being equal, longer rods cast further and make tight line techniques easier to execute. Shorter rods tend to be more accurate, and overall better at shorter ranges.

Long rods are right at home on wide-open rivers and streams.

Typically, if you fish small streams with overhanging vegetation, a shorter rod - under 9 feet - will serve you better. But if maximum distance is necessary, and there are no obstacles overhead, a long rod is the best choice.

The predominance of euro nymphing and tight line techniques has led manufacturers to push blank action toward the fast end of the spectrum, meaning that the rod will bend closer to the tip than the grip.

Faster rods cast nymphs longer distances, and they’re perfect for feeling every bump and bounce through a tight line connected to your nymph. But they’re difficult to cast for beginners, and it’s important to truly master the fundamentals to get the most from them.

By contrast, medium action blanks load easily and deeply, allowing ideal presentations for dry flies. That deeper bend also translates into more feel and easier timing, making them a better choice if you’re new to the sport.

Final Thoughts

Veterans an beginners alike will welcome the range of excellent 5wt rods currently available, and whether you’re looking for a new outfit to get you started, a dedicated 5 wt dry fly rod, or an outstanding all-rounder, our shortlist is sure to please.

We hope that this article has helped you find the right 5wt fly rod for your needs and budget, and we’d love to hear from you if it has.

Wrapping up

You can not go wrong with any of Echo’s fly rods, especially if you are hard on your gear. I have an Echo fly rod that’s older than I am. It’s been jammed against a wall, tumbled down a hill, and fallen out a car multiple times. It’s just as good as the day I got it.

Gear Review: Echo Prime + Echo Trout Fly Rod - First Impressions

Words + photos by: josh thelin.

I recently got my hands on a couple of the new fly rods that Echo will be releasing mid November. One of them is their newest premier saltwater rod, and the other is their top end trout rod. Both of them will be at the highest end (price-wise) of Echo's offerings in the $350-$525 zone. This is smack in the center of the "mid-priced" rod category that has seen a lot of attention and growth in the fly fishing industry over the past few years. There is good reason for this as well. For some people, a high end rod is either unaffordable or irrational. Most high end rods are a combination of meticulous construction and peak performance. What makes the mid-price range so alluring in most cases however, is that you get all (or most of) the performance, but the rod might lack higher quality finishes and/or materials like reel seat inserts and hardware. However, this is not to say that every rod under $700 is ugly and falls apart after a season by any means. But, for a company like Echo who tends to make their rods with function as their top priority, it tends to attract anglers who are likeminded in their fishing endeavors...

    Echo Prime Fly Rod Review

The first rod I cast was the Echo Prime. A saltwater rod available in either 4pc or 2pc configuration, the Prime comes in 8-12wt options (8, 10, 11wt for 2pc) and is 8'10" across the board. According to Echo: "when targeting flats fish, things happen quickly and usually in the 40-60 foot "kill zone." Everything about the Echo Prime rod has been optimized to help you succeed in the zone."  This is interesting because one of the first things I thought about while working out line was "man this would be a good bonefish rod." The slightly shorter length and not incredibly stiff action helped me dial in accuracy quickly and confidently. There was not much wind that afternoon, so the Prime was not tested much in this department. But I could create good line speed and felt it would do well if breezy. (Better in the wind, I believe, than the Echo Bad Ass Glass Quickshot I reviewed recently)

Fly line used: Airflo Ridge Striper WF8F (290gr)

    Fly rod tested: Echo Prime Fly Rod 8'10" 8wt (4pc) - $469.99

The Echo Prime boasts a "Dual Zone" (cork) handle, which I'm still not 100% what that means...but I will say the larger half wells front lip and overall size of the cork felt good in my larger hands. This can be an afterthought for most consumers, but I do find it makes a difference. For instance there are some rods, like the TFO Mangrove, which is a great rod, but the cork handle is small and sometimes uncomfortable casting for long periods of time.

Overall I was very impressed with the Prime. With a moderately aggressive floating line it cast incredibly well within 70ft with good reserved power. I am not sure how it would do with heavier aggressive heads or sinking lines. But, as this road is advertised with flats fishing in mind, it seems incredibly capable within that capacity. I am going to try very hard to bring this on my next bonefish trip.

    Echo Trout Fly Rod review

Fly line used: Airflo Super-DRI Elite WF5F

    Fly rod tested: Echo Trout 9' 5wt - $349.99

In the lighter weight options, the Trout has been made to help protect lighter tippets and softer presentations with a softer tip section. So, seeing as this rod is only available in 4-6wts, if the 6wt has a stiffer tip and the 4wt has a softer tip, I would think it's safe to say the 5wt is right down the middle of the road. I would tend to agree with this thinking after casting it as well. I did not get the impression that the rod was only dialed in for dry flies, nor did I get the feeling it was hungry to only throw sinking lines and meat. I think the Echo Trout 5wt is going to be a great rod for those looking to buy one trout rod that can handle dry flies to nymph rigs.

    Echo Trout Fly Rod Review

One added perk I thought was interesting, was the included fighting butt (similar to the Echo Shadow X ) that will be available in the other models as well from the 4-6wts. This would allow anglers to adjust the rod to specific styles/techniques such as nymphing.

Overall the Echo Trout was a pleasure to cast. Similar to the testing of the Prime, these were just preliminary reactions while casting in my parking lot, but for what I got out of the tests I was certainly impressed. I will be curious to cast the Trout and the Boost 6wts side-by-side to see which would be better for streamers...

Thanks for the review. It was good .

The lower section is where the power comes from. Also this rod is incredibly easy to cast. There is a large sweet spot and makes casting effortless.
