The Complete Guide to Churdhar Peak Trek

Churdhar Peak Trek takes you to the highest peak in the outside Himalayan range. George Everest made his astronomical reading of the Himalayan Mountains. Chur-Dhar is also known as Churi-Chandni Dhar (Bangles of snow ridge). The approach to the Churdhar summit can be done from three sides. The shortest and most popular one is from Nauradhar in the Sirmour district. The peak is surrounded by a 56 square km forest sanctuary, which makes trekking a delightful affair. The trek to Churdhar can be done from May till November when the snow melts and the trails are accessible. The trek is a steep hike inside a dense Deodar forest, terraced fields and Gujjar pasture lands.

The last one hour of the trek is a moraine walk as you leave the forests behind. At the summit, the views are outstanding. On a clear day, you can see Badrinath and Kedarnath, The Gangetic basin, Sutlej River, Shimla, Chail, Kufri, Kasauli & Chakrata.

➤ Highlights of the trek

  • At a modest elevation of just under 12,000 feet, Churdhar is the highest peak outside the Himalayan range. Very few know that it is from the top of this peak
  • George Everest made his astronomical reading of the Himalayan Mountains. Chur-Dhar is also known as Churi-Chandni Dhar (Bangles of snow ridge).
  • This peak is visible from Shimla, Kasauli, Solan & Kufri and retains a streak of snow on its upper ridge throughout the year.

➤ Trail Information

At around 8 am, I got a bus for Rajgarh from DC Office, Solan. Rajgarh is also known as Peach Valley and is famous for the HPMC factory and its untouched scenic beauty. It took about one and a half hours to reach Rajgarh. To my luck, as soon as I stepped out of the bus, I saw a bus conductor calling out “Nohra!” I rushed towards the bus and jumped in but got no seat.

In no time, the bus got crowded and the journey began. The views during the journey were scenic, with green valleys across a large span of my vision. At 11.45 am, I reached the Nohradhar bus stand, which is not quite a bus stand but a road where buses halt. Just in front, I saw a board welcoming tourists for the trek to Churdhar. I took supplies like water and food items for the journey and started my trek at about noon.

Since this is a very locally popular trail, there is no need for guides. The initial part of the journey is a bit difficult as the trail is full of rocks. It is advised to trek with good trekking shoes. After a few hundred metres, I thought of climbing the mountain directly rather than following the conventional path. There was no trail, but I carried on hoping to find a trail, but even after an hour, nothing appeared.

Meadows of Jamnala-Churdhar peak trek-treks in himachal- Indiahikes

Meadows of Jamnala. Picture Credit : Amit Tiwary

Then, I passed by a house, where I asked for the route to Churdhar from persons there and to my luck, they confirmed that I was on right track. For 15 to 20 minutes, I trekked and again got confused about the trail. So I had to wait there for someone to pass by so that I could confirm the route. After a few minutes, a guy came from uphill and confirmed the route and now, the trail appeared.

I resumed my journey following the trail that was very recognizable now. The views were very scenic, passing through forests and meadows with the sounds of chirping birds. There were many spots for camping; however, I had to go further so I erased any thoughts of camping there.

At about 3 pm I reached Jamnala, which is a plain meadow or rather can be called a large ground with a couple of shops for basic supplies. So, I halted there for tea and filled my water bottles from a tap present on the ground and resumed my journey after 10 minutes. Night stay facilities were also available at Jamnala.

Now, the next destination was Teesri, with 4-5 more km to go. Now the route was through dense forests and there was no problem. Multiple water streams can be found a midway, however, few offer clear water. Now the route is easy and most of the route is straightforward.

When I was on the trek, many people were undertaking the same journey, most of whom were locals. After about 2 hours, I reached Teesri, which can be located at a distance of about 200 metres. Teesri is a Gujjar settlement.

I had six kilometres more to go and it was already 5 pm. I decided to camp here. It took me a lot of searching to find a decent campsite. However, this campsite turned out to be a bad idea because the wind kept blowing my tent off. And the whole area was inclined towards my tent. I would have to look for accommodation at Teesri. I made Maggi and soup on my own as I had cooking utensils. The night sky view was very mesmerizing.

I woke up at 7 am and resumed my journey after having tea. Now, the path was quite straightforward for about 1 km, passing through rocky paths, forests and then meadows. It was very scenic!

At one point, there were two routes to Churdhar peak. One of them went directly up to the peak. Another went all the way to the temple and then to the peak. The short one was steep and 4 km long and the other one was 7 km. I took the local people’s advice and took the longer route.

On way to Churdhar Summit-Churdhar peak trek-treks in himachal- Indiahikes

The trail again entered dense forests, with a few sources of water. The trail was very different from yesterday; it was a combination of ascents, descents and level walks. I would get slower at steeps inclines and run quickly downhill. Finding the trail wasn’t hard but it was rocky and I had to be careful, lest I slipped.

At around 10 am, I reached a small meadow, where there were two trails – one to the temple and one to the peak. I went over the descending path, which led me to the temple premises within minutes. I washed my feet and hand and offered my prayers in the temple. Then, I had the food (Bhandara or langar) in the Dharamshala.

About an hour later, I left for Churdhar peak, which was 2 km away. I could already see Lord Shiva’s idol, which sits proudly atop the peak. However, I knew this would not be so close. The path to the peak got steeper and steeper.

Come to think of it, there was no trail. There were huge boulders all along and the sight of the peak kept me going. I had to navigate every boulder one by one. It felt a lot like rock climbing.

The last part, which was about half of the path, was very steep. It took me 2 hours to reach the peak. The view there was very beautiful, with clouds all around. I could see no mountain higher than this peak.

After offering my prayers to the intimidating idol of Lord Shiva, I looked for a path directly leading to Teesri (about 3 km away) because a local had told me about this trail. But I couldn’t find it. I had to retrace the same route and walk another 7 km, by the end of which I was exhausted. I reached Jamnala at 4 pm.

Now, I could take two routes to reach Nohradhar – one through a forest, by which I came, and the other by the trail which is used by most locals. I chose the second one to get an idea of all routes but later I regretted my decision as this path was full of rocks and is quite difficult and longer.

I reached Nohradhar at 7 pm only to find out that the last bus to Solan was at 4 pm so I had to spend the night at Nohradhar. There are plenty of options for a night's stay. However, on searching, I found a dormitory, which was much cheaper than other stay options so I chose that one.

I left the next day for Solan.

Things to remember

1. the Last bus from Nohradhar to Solan is at 4 pm and to Rajgarh is at around 6.30 pm. 2. Don’t rely on the ATM in Nohradhar as ATMs here are closed on Sundays and other holidays. 3. From Churdhar Peak to Teesri, there’s a direct path, which saves about 2 hours. Learn about this route from the locals before going on the trek.

➤ How to get fit for the Churdhar Peak Trek

Click on the image to view the Video

The Churdhar Peak trek is classified as a trek of  moderate difficulty . You trek up to an altitude of 12,000 feet. This means there is a long trail that you will have to climb. Hence, you need to make sure you are fit for the trek.

Cardiovascular endurance On the Churdhar Peak trek, you have to trek for 32 km over two days. This requires a good amount of endurance. You can  begin by jogging everyday .  Start jogging at a slow pace and then keep increasing your pace day by day. Make sure you are able to  jog 4 km in 20 minutes  before the start of the trek. It takes time to be able to cover this distance in the given time. Swimming, cycling and stair climbing without too many breaks in between can help too.

Strength This is another area you should work on. There is a lot of trekking distance that you will cover carrying your backpacks and trekking along with your backpack is not a very easy task.  You have to walk on uneven terrain during the trek. It could be taxing for your legs. For this, strengthening your legs will help. You can do some squats to strengthen them. Do around  3 sets of squats, with 8 squats in each set .

Flexibility Another aspect that will help you trek comfortably is flexibility. For this, you can do some stretching exercises –  stretch your hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors, lower back muscles and shoulders  regularly. On your trek, it is important that you arrive on the slopes with your muscles relaxed. Carrying a backpack, however light, can become a strain after a while. These exercises will help you to be in good shape before the trek.

Working out indoors If you can’t go out and jog because of time and space constraints,  here’s a video  you can use to work out indoors.

churdhar trek

3 days/2 nights, 12,000 feet, 0°c to 22°c, himachal pradesh, fixed departure dates churdhar trek, package price, churdhar trek - best weekend near delhi - chandigarh.

Shiv jo on churdhar

In the vicinity of Chandigarh, the Churdhar Trek (3,647 m) is a spiritual journey for the ideal weekend retreat. From April through November, Broza adventures provides trips to this beautiful walk. The Indian state of Himachal Pradesh's Sirmaur district is home to Churdhar, situated at a height of 3,647m (11,965ft). The highest peak in the Sirmaur district and the highest peak in the outer Himalayas are found there.

A deodar-roofed temple of Lord Shirgul Devta with a lingam dedicated to Lord Shiva is located below the top (Chudeshwar Mahadev). For the locals of Sirmaur, Chaupal, and Solan, this temple holds a special place in their hearts.

Churdhar is sometimes called "Chur Chandani," which means moonlit mountain. There are three ways to approach the summit: via Nauradhar (16 km from Sirmaur), Sarain (8 km from Chaupal, Shimla), and Pulhwal (8 km) (Chaupal, Shimla).

The most well-known one is from Nauradhar in the Sirmour area, with lovely rest stops in between and a spectacular view all around. It is a location of immense religious significance in the state's Sirmaur district. A colossal statue of Lord Shiva that towers over Churdhar Peak is enthralling to look at and transports you to the stories of ancient Indian epics like the Mahabharata and Ramayana.

Churdhar Trek is one of the most thrilling treks around Shimla. Beautiful views of the Dhauladhar, the Greater Himalayas, and some large peaks in Uttarakhand, such as Swargarohini (6,252 m), Bandarpoonch, and others, can be seen on a clear, bright day (6,316 m), Kedarnath (6,940 m), and Badrinath (7,138 m).

Best Time To Do Churdhar Trek

Churdhar begins with steep inclines and has a moderately difficult ascent and descent. The ideal months to hike these pathways are May, June, October, and November. This journey qualifies as a pre-and post-monsoon season excursion because of the unfavorable temperatures and precipitation. The average temperature during the daytime ranges between 25 and 15 degrees Celsius, but the overnight low is substantially lower.

Short Itinerary

Day 01: drive from chandigarh to nohradhar and trek to base camp:, day 02: trek from the base camp to churdhar peak and back to base camp:, day 03: trekking from base camp to nohradhar and travel to chandigarh:, detail itinerary.

Churdhar base camp

Day 01: Drive from Chandigarh to Nohradhar  130 km (5 hours) Trek to Base Camp

  • Meeting place: Section 17 of the ISBT.
  • Nohradhar travel time is 5 hours.
  • Base camp is a 6 km, 4 hr hike away.

Your travel to Nohradhar's base village will start from Chandigarh. Nohradhar is a spot where you can taste the local way of life and converse with residents. The trail is highly muddy until it finally enters a woodland. The distance of today's hike is 6-7 km. Build the camp. Snacks and tea would be provided. I'm going to watch the sunset. Dinner and early bedtime are advised because the next day will be spent trekking extensively.

Trekking on churdhar top

Day 02: Trek from the Base Camp to Churdhar Peak and back (Trek 12km, 7 Hrs)

  • Churdhar Peak is around 12,000 feet above sea level.
  • A 12 mile, 7-hour hike

Start your journey early in the morning and proceed towards Churdhar Peak, which is around 7 kilometers away. While on the go, you can make calls, but the network is unreliable; Jio and Airtel work nicely. You'll be rewarded with views of the Churdhar Peak and the snow-covered Mountains after Teesri. You'll arrive at the top in 3 to 4 hours. Take in the sweeping vistas from the peak. Return to the base camp, where dinner and snacks will be served. Rest a while.

Get up early because this will be a long trekking day. It would help if you ascended slowly through woodland for 5 kilometers to reach Teesri, at 3250 meters. The windiest part of the trek is at Teesri, where several shops are along the mountain's peak. After crossing Teesri, the treeline starts to recede. The temple of Chureshwar is located 2 kilometers uphill from the top. When you reach the summit, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of high Himalayan peaks like Kinner Kailash, Srikhand Mahadev, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. Spend some time there and then return in the evening to the campsite.

Travelling is an important element of our lives, and people who do not travel do not live fully. Our objective is never a location but rather a new approach to discovering things, and trekking is thrilling, and there is a saying that "the finest vistas come after the hardest climbs." So, let's talk about the Churdhar trek, which is one of Shimla's most intriguing hikes. In this article, our experts will provide you with all the Churdhar trek details - Churdhar trek itinerary, Churdhar trekking distance, Churdhar trek location, and much more. Scroll through to know more about this awesome adventure.

Introduction

The Churdhar peak is the tallest mountain in the Himalayan range outside of the Himalayas. Churi-Chandni-Dhar is another name for this summit. Locals think Shri Chureshwar or Shirgul Maharaj resided here in ancient times; hence it is called after them. The panoramic views from the peak are breathtaking. Kinner Kailash, Shrikhand Mahadev, Kedarnath, Badrinath, Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, Black Peak, and the Dhauladhar Range are among the Himalayan peaks seen from the top. The Gangetic basin, the Sutlej River, Shimla, Chail, Kufri, Kasauli, and Chakrata can all be seen from the peak.

The path from Nauradhar is the most popular of the three approaches to the top. It takes around three hours to drive from Kasauli to Nauradhar. This cab service is also included in the package. After arriving at Nauradhar, lunch will be served and free the rest of the day. The majority of visitors choose to spend the day in this town. The Churdhar Trek begins the next morning shortly after breakfast.

Churdhar Trip's initial 1 km is a somewhat difficult trek with a steep, rocky, and muddy environment. Beyond that, the trip becomes easier with a regular ascent through dense pine woods that leads to a lovely meadow where the day's campground is surrounded by cedar and pine trees scurrying quietly as if to sing you a lullaby to sleep. The final portion of the walk is a hard moraine hike. Still, because a 56-square-kilometre forest sanctuary encircles the summit, you can take in the panoramic vista of lush green forest with the Greater Himalayas in the distance.

Churdur Peak Suggested Trekking Itinerary from Nohradhar

Day 1: Reach Nohradhar - Jamnala/Teesri After overnight Journey, you can reach Nohradhar in the morning. After a small rest and breakfast, you can start your trek. Carry water some food items along with you. The trek is full of rocks as we start but after that it becomes quite easy.

Jamnala is a plain meadow where you will find couple of shops for basic supplies, you can also take night halt in Jamnala if you reach late, otherwise you can continue your journey. Teesri is around 5 kms from Jamnala, which will be our night halt campsite.

Day 2: Jamala/Teesri - Churdhar Summit - Jamala/Teesri After 1 km of rocky trail, you will pass through forests followed by meadows, which offers scenic views. After a point, there were two routes to Churdhar peak. One was a direct and shorter but steep trail of 4 kms to the Churdhar peak. Another was via the temple, which was easy but 7 kms long. It is advisable (even by locals) that one should take the longer route and visit temple before the summit.

After visiting temple, resume your trek to Summit. The summit trek is still very hard and time consuming but offers breathtaking views. Trek down to Teesri or Jamala, as per the trekking speed, timing or guide recommendation. Night stay in Camps.

Churdhar Trek Overview

The Churdhar trek is the highest in the outer Himalaya region. The peak is also famous by Churi Chandani Dhar's name and is named after a great ancient Indian emperor Shri Chureshwar. The view from the top of the peak is unbelievable, and it feels like you are standing above the clouds. There are various Himalayan peaks visible from the top, and those peaks are – Kinner Kailash, Shrikhand Mahadev, Kedarnath, Badrinath, Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and some others. From the top point, other visible, beautiful places are – The Gangetic basin, Kufri, Kasauli, Shimla, Sutlej River, and chakrata. There are three different routes for reaching the summit, but the one called Nauradhar is the most popular among all 3. The very first km of the trek might be pretty tricky for a few beginners as the route compromises rocky and muddy landscape, and the way is a little steep. But it would be fine and get back to normal once you reach thick forests of pine trees, which take us to beautiful meadows.

Health & Fitness

In nature, the Churdhar Trek is regarded as a moderate trek. The trail ascends to a height of over 12,000 feet. There is a significant altitude gain, from Nohradhar to Churdhar peak (7,000ft to 12,000ft), which necessitates the use of very powerful lungs.

The Churdhar Trek necessitates a high level of cardiovascular endurance. And you might be considering how to strengthen your lungs? To begin, go for a jog every day. Begin jogging slowly and gradually increase your speed. As a result, cardiovascular endurance exercises are highly vital for making your lungs stronger than before.

The Workouts

  • Walking with a 10kg rucksack strapped on your back is a terrific way to shape your legs and body. It aids in the burning of calories, the reduction of excess weight, and the strengthening of your body.
  • For high ascents, stair climbing is the finest workout. Include it in your training routine.
  • Jogging can help you live longer by strengthening your lungs and improving your life. It’s a high-intensity aerobic activity that necessitates a lot of oxygen. This is an excellent activity for protecting weight and maintaining good health.
  • Squats are the most effective functional exercise for improving balance. Legs, thighs, hips, and hamstrings are also strengthened.
  • Pull-ups, push-ups, sprints, mountain climber, burpee, jumping jacks, and 60-second plank (3-5 sets each).
  • Pushing your body upstairs after stair climbing is another fantastic cardiovascular exercise. This is often considered to be the most effective workout for improving strength and power. Carrying an 18kg pack also helps a lot.
  • Finally, remember to pamper your body with some breathing exercises, Yoga, and Meditation.
  • For the best outcome, eat well, stay hydrated, and get enough rest.

The Churdhar trek is a popular trekking route located in the Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh, India. It is renowned for its scenic beauty, diverse flora and fauna, and the spiritual significance attached to Churdhar Peak, which is the highest peak in the outer Himalayas of the state.
