Everything To Know About the Boston Duck Boats and Tours

Boston Duck Tours takes visitors on an 80-minute tour of Boston

From Boston’s historic homes to the bustling waterfront, it can be a little overwhelming to make sure you hit all of the city’s most noteworthy sites . But there isn’t much of a better way to fit everything in than the Boston Duck Tours.

Since 1994, the “duck” boats have been a staple in the Massachusetts capital, carrying thousands of passengers in peak season across the city. Today, the fleet consists of 28 replica World War II amphibious landing vehicles that take you through Boston and into the Charles River. Here’s everything you need to know about one of Boston’s most popular tours.

View Tours >>

Hit numerous sites in 80 minutes

With tours taking place every day from the end of March through the end of November, the Boston Duck Tours run every 20-30 minutes (depending on departure area) from 9am to about an hour before sunset. Passengers have the ability to get tickets and board at three locations, including the Prudential Center, Museum of Science and the New England Aquarium.

Once onboard, local drivers take guests on an 80-minute tour of the city, hitting numerous historical and significant sites along the way. You’ll slow down to see the Boston Public Gardens, Beacon Hill, JFK Residence, the Old State House and more than 20 other sites.

During the ride, the quirky ConDUCKtors spew out historical facts and interesting tidbits. Each guide takes on a different persona, bringing a unique – and often humorous – twist to the tour. There’s Bobby Oar, Vincent Van Duck, Robin the Riveter, Lenient Louis the Plunderless Privateer, Captain Super Swift and a crew of many other characters.

While the New England Aquarium boats take a slightly different route than the Prudential Center and Museum of Science rides, they see most of the same places. The Prudential Center and Museum of Science boats are also equipped to give tours in nine different languages and are wheelchair accessible.

Taking a duck boat tour is a great way to see Boston’s top attractions

Get on the Charles River

One of the more popular locations along the ride puts visitors right into the Charles. At different points on the trip (depending on your boarding spot), the “Duck” turns from truck to boat, and the drivers take passengers on a 20-minute glide over the river.

Entering the river around the Museum of Science, participants see Boston’s West End and Beacon Hill neighborhoods from the water before cruising under the famous Longfellow Bridge. The excursion gives wide, sweeping views of the Boston and Cambridge skylines and intimately displays the Back Bay, including the beautiful Esplanade, before turning back.

If you’re lucky, you’ll be one of the several passengers picked to drive the boat along the river portion of the tour.

You’ll float on the river for 20 minutes

Ride in a little piece of history

While the present-day boats are all replicas, the Boston Duck Tours started with an original fleet of World War II amphibious landing vehicles that were converted for passengers. Code-named “DUKW” (which is where the current name comes from), the last original WWII vehicle was taken out of the fleet in 2014, but the company still owns one for special occasions.

The replicas are known as “truck ducks.” First built in Kansas, these models were purposely made for tourism and have a stronger hull with an enclosed top. The oldest boat dates back to 2006 with the newest being from 2014.

To localize the fleet, the company named each of the 28 duck boats after a Boston landmark or neighborhood, with the name painted along the side of the vehicle. Boats include Back Bay Bertha, Beacon Hilda, Espla Nadia, Olga Ironsides, Symphony Hal, Fenway Fanny and many others.

Boston Duck Tours no longer uses original American military DUKWs

Ride in the same boats as Boston’s champions

Starting in 2002 with the New England Patriots’ first Super Bowl win, Boston Duck Tours and its boats became the “Official ChampionSHIP” of Boston’s four major sports teams. Whenever one of Boston’s teams wins a championship, the company sends out its “Rolling Rally,” a parade that consists of almost the whole fleet and welcomes the players onboard to travel around the city among crowds of cheering fans.

The duck boats have hosted the championship parade a total of 12 times between all four sports teams since 2002, including six times for the Patriots, four times for the Red Sox and one each for the Bruins and Celtics.

On the day of the championship parade, the summer tours are shut down, and all the boats go towards hosting the rally. In the case of the Patriots, whose Super Bowl parade is in the winter, the fleet is brought back into service for one day in February to celebrate. The Military Roots of the Duck-Boat Tour

How an army vehicle became a tourist favorite

duck tour history

Boston’s Newbury Street is quiet and leafy; high-end stores peek out between sidewalk cafes, where stoppers sit outside, soaking up the sun.

But from down the street lumbers an army utility vehicle, painted tarp-blue and piloted by a man in sunglasses and a tattered red bandana. He goes by the name Captain WeirdBeard . He lets out a strange sound: Quack ! His 32 passengers join in. They all wave as they trundle by the shoppers.

The Boston Duck Tours are truly unabashedly bizarre. But they’re also far from an uncommon sight. Rain or shine, the 28 boats in the fleet take to the city’s streets and waterways, each captained by a character who tosses back equal shares of personality and Boston history to all aboard. The tours wend their way past the usual landmarks: the Hancock Tower, the Make Way for Ducklings sculptures, the Boston Public Library.

But on the swanky Newbury Street, “getting folks there to quack and wave back is the main goal,” one captain told The Gainesville Sun in 1995.

For such a tongue-in-cheek institution, duck boat tours have a surprisingly somber origin: World War II.

In 1942, the U.S. military was faced with a quandary: with the war ongoing, soldiers stationed overseas were in need of supplies and reinforcements. But by that point, most of Europe’s harbors were in tatters; the military couldn’t get close enough to land to reach the troops. In response, General Motors developed the DUKW—a military-grade vehicle able to operate on both land and water, whose finest moment would come about during the D-Day invasion of Normandy in 1944.

The name DUKW derived from military equipment coding : D stood for the year of production (1942); U denoted its amphibious quality; K indicated front-wheel drive capability; W rear-wheel drive. Unsurprisingly, they just became known as “ducks.”

These days, Boston is one of several cities that operate such tours. But they got their start in rural Wisconsin. After the war ended in 1945, the military made surplus supplies available for public purchase. Bob Unger, a veteran from Milwaukee, snapped up a DUKW, which he had learned to pilot during the war. Where he saw an army relic, his fried Mel Flath saw a business opportunity. Flath convinced Unger to bring his DUKW to the Wisconsin Dells—the scenic landscape surrounding the southern portion of the Wisconsin River. They launched their first tour as the Wisconsin Ducks in the summer of 1946, says Dan Gavinski, now the general manager of company.

By the next season, the tour company operated 37 DUKWs. Today, the Wisconsin Ducks, Gavinski says, has the largest fleet of DUKWs in the country, and their 91 vehicles still date from the Second World War.

The Wisconsin Ducks take pride in the label “original”—the company can lay undisputed claim to the first amphibious tour in the country. But the relaxed vibe of the backcountry routes is a far cry from the rambunctious, arguably more notorious tours that wind their way through at least 30 cities worldwide.

In that respect, the Boston Duck Tours, which launched in 1994, were the first. “A lot of people think that we’re the original,” says the CEO Cindy Brown. “But we always make sure to yield to Wisconsin.”

The move to an urban setting was not exactly smooth sailing. According to the company , bringing DUKWs to Boston “took nearly two years, ‘100 halls of government,’ and fierce determination by an ex-banker [the founder Andy Wilson] who felt that there was more to life than the standard 9-5, corporate world.” Securing the 30 municipal permits necessary to operate the tours was a veritable nightmare “due to the infamous bureaucratic red tape, but also because most people had never heard of Ducks and simply thought the idea of a land/water tour in Boston was crazy.”

The tours turned out to not be so crazy after all; during peak season, they now ferry around 4,500 passengers per day. But they are, Brown says, decidedly quirky. The drivers are encouraged to cultivate distinctive personalities, often so effectively that Brown says she sometimes finds herself calling them by their aliases around the office.

Other cities soon followed. Ride the Ducks was founded in Branson, Missouri, in 1977 and operated a rural route, but in 2003, it launched in Philadelphia and Stone Mountain, Georgia, a town outside of Atlanta, where the company is now headquartered. Many urban duck tours, like those in Seattle and Austin, operate independently, but Ride the Ducks is a franchise, complete with a production subsidiary called Amphibious Vehicle Marketing, which provides modern iterations of the WWII DUKWs to companies like Boston Duck Tours.

This interconnectedness, Brown says, is a testament to both the peculiarity of the industry and to its tiny size. “As you can imagine, there aren’t many duck tours out there,” she says. While that closeness fosters a sense of universality among these very location-specific tours, it also causes any backlash against the industry to amplify.

Over the course of their relatively short history, DUKW tours have come under fire for a number of fatal accidents. Thirteen people drowned in 1999 after a boat operated by Land and Lake Tours, Inc. malfunctioned on Lake Hamilton in Arkansas ; the company has since dissolved. Philadelphia has been the site of two accidents: one in 2010 , and one in 2015 —a year which also saw a deadly crash in Seattle , after an axel failure cause a DUKW boat to crash into a bus. “If there’s an accident in one place, all the companies are implicated,” Brown says. “And because our industry is a little bit unique, when something does happen, it becomes a front-page story.”

Yet despite the challenges, duck tours are buoyed by their weirdness, which often comes from the drivers themselves. The industry has a surprising sticking power. Boston is currently training 11 new drivers. Over a six-to-eight-week period, aspiring guides take lessons in driving, history, safety, and theatrics. Most of them stay in it for the duration: some of the current drivers have been in the business for over 15 years, Brown says. (She’s been with the tours for 21 years; Gavinski started with the Wisconsin Ducks as a 14-year-old ticket collector in 1971).

Underneath all the flare, guides try to do justice by their cities. In Londonist last month, the writer Will Noble described how his trip aboard a DUKW, bolstered by his guide’s “occasional bouts of flippancy,” left even him—a seasoned Londoner—ever-so-slightly more knowledgeable about his city. “It was good to have a guide who can ramble on a bit like that,” one of Noble’s fellow passengers said. “He was like Stephen Fry.”

Boston's duck boats are famous: What's their history?

What do you think of when you think of sports championship parades in Boston , besides the teams themselves?

That's easy - duck boats.

Those are the cool looking boat-like vehicles that can travel on land and water, and have become a staple in transporting athletes during championship parades. The New England Patriots , Boston Celtics, Boston Red Sox and Boston Bruins have all used the boats at such parades.

On Friday, they'll roll out for a nother parade celebrating the Celtic's newest championship.

But when the duck boats are not transporting championship teams through the streets, they can be seen traveling the streets and water of Boston showcasing the city to tourists and residents alike.

What are duck boats?

Duck boats are colorful, bulky, boat-like vehicles that travel throughout Boston on land and on water. Boston Duck Tours are 80-minutes in length - 60 minutes on land and 20 minutes on the Charles River. Boston Duck Tours began rolling through the streets of Boston in October 1994.

How many duck boats does Boston have?

There are 28 amphibious duck boats - called ducks - used by Boston Duck Tours. Each duck is colorfully painted and named after Boston landmarks such as "Fenway Fanny," "Kenmore Karla," "Charlie River," "Longfellow Bridget," "Miss Emma Science," "Beantown Betty," 'Beacon Hilda," and "Symphony Hal."

Do Boston duck tours go in the water?

Yes. Boston Duck Tours splash into the Charles River for approximately 20 minutes of each 80 minute city tour. According to the tour website, you will not get wet on the tour, but could get a light spray depending on the wind direction.

How many championship parades have used the duck boats?

The duck boats have been used for championship parades in Boston since 2002. The Boston Duck Boat website states, "Boston Duck Tours, over the years, has had the honor and pleasure of hosting four of Boston’s sports teams in Rolling Rally Championship parades 12 different times."

According to the website, with duck boats "players could stand on, and wave to the crowds below. It was close enough to get these players right up to their fans. But, also far enough to keep them from being mobbed by the crowds."

A brief history of duck boats

The History Channel explained that allied troops used duck boats to get artillery, supplies and soldiers ashore during  World War II .

" DUKW boats made their first appearance in combat during the 1943  invasion of Sicily  known as Operation Husky," History.com states. "The name 'DUKW' corresponded to General Motors’ manufacturing code (“D” is “1942 model,” “U” is “amphibious,” “K” is “all-wheel drive,” and “W” is “dual rear wheels”). Soldiers simplified this by calling them “ducks.”

"Like actual ducks, these boat-trucks with wheels looked a little awkward. But their weird design is what allowed troops to drive the vehicles from water onto land—a crucially important task."

Where do the duck boats depart from in Boston?

According to the Boston Duck Tour website , there are three departure locations:

  • Prudential Center, 53 Huntington Ave.
  • Museum of Science, One Science Park.
  • New England Aquarium, Central Wharf.

How many duck boat tour companies are there in Boston?

Boston Duck Tours is the only duck tour company in Boston.

Do other cities have duck boats?

There are other states that do duck boat tours , like Tennessee, Alaska, Wisconsin, California, Florida, Maine and Texas, among others.

Boston Duck Tours

The quackiest way to see boston.

For years I’ve seen the Boston Duck Tours driving through the streets of downtown Boston. I noticed them as randomly decorated military truck type things, but I never even considered taking a ride on one – that was a  touristy thing to do , and I wasn’t a tourist!

Then one weekend, my cousin and her boyfriend came to town and what did they want to do? One of the Boston Duck Tours!

Fortunately, these days I have two incentives to try out the touristy activities I once ignored: 1. Share my hometown with my husband and daughter who really are like tourists. 2. Get the inside scoop so I can share it with you!

So… we picked a date, bought our tickets online (super easy), and off we went for our first Boston Duck Tour.

boston duck tours

The only slight negative of the entire experience was that it was fairly chaotic when we first get to the Prudential Center. There wasn’t a clear line to stand in and we weren’t assigned to a particular duck or group, so we found a bench to sit on and waited to be directed.

From there on, we were nothing less than impressed.

We were seated on “Old Gloria”, the duck with a big American flag painted onto it, and were soon introduced to our tour leader, Captain Kidding (who described himself as a pirate from Wyoming who, trying to follow the call of the sea, took a $57,000 cab ride to Boston and has been working for the Boston Duck Tours in order to pay off his cab fare ever since!).

To say the least, Captain Kidding was highly entertaining and highly informative. I think I could listen to his narrative 10 times over and still learn something new.

Within about a minute of leaving “home base” on our duck, we were “quacking” at the passers by (not required, but actually pretty fun if you let yourself get into it – and, of course, my 3-year old LOVED it!).

boston duck tours

Our tour guide did a fabulous job of giving us an understanding of the history of different Boston neighborhoods, sharing important historical events, and showing us the beauty and quirks of our city.

Of course, all of this was done completely “in character” as well, so everyone was engaged and it never felt like we were sitting through a history lesson.

When we got to the Charles River, the W.W.II style amphibious landing vehicle (as the Boston Duck Tours describe it) miraculously transformed into a boat. Which reminds me, there was  one  more downside to our journey…

Captain Kidding let all of the kids on the boat take turns driving it (and even a grown-up or two got in there). However, he either didn’t see Siena, or thought she was too young to want a try, so we were left to calm a very distressed 2.5 year old when we ran out of time to request a turn for her… Alas, the challenges a toddler faces!

A testament to how engaging the duck tour was – Siena managed to stay awake in a moving vehicle right during naptime… until the last three minutes. She slept through lunch, of course, but was talking about the duck boat for days afterwards!

Why Should I Go?

If you’ve ever walked the streets of downtown Boston you’ve surely seen the “Duck,” a World War II–inspired boat-bus hybrid, or “amphibious landing vehicle,” cruising the streets, packed with waving tourists. But Duck Tours aren’t only for out-of-town visitors, and summer is the perfect time to enjoy a light-hearted, yet educational tour of Boston, narrated by an expert conDUCKtor. Sail through the city’s most aesthetic neighborhoods, from bustling Back Bay to the historic North End, and enjoy a deep dive into Boston’s rich history. Hear about Trinity Church, the Granary Burying Ground, and the State House. For the grand finale, prepare for the “Big Splash,” as the Duck rolls into the Charles River, and take in the gorgeous views of the city skyline.

Though tours depart from three different locations, we recommend starting your tour at the New England Aquarium, on the historic Central Wharf pier, which features some of Boston’s best shopping and dining. Make a day of it and head to the aquarium with your family, where you can enjoy discounted admission , a 10 percent discount at the Aquarium gift shop, and more, with the purchase of a Duck Tour ticket. For those who haven’t been, the Aquarium has more than 10 exhibitions, a four-story ocean tank, and the largest shark and ray touch tank on the East Coast. It’s worth a visit.

Original Wisconsin Ducks

Our one-hour, half-land, half-water adventure features the most scenic parts of Wisconsin Dells, including the Wisconsin River, Dell Creek, Lake Delton and the Dells Scenic Park, exclusively traveled by Original Wisconsin Ducks ® on trails we’ve used since 1946!

Click the red numbers on the map for a preview of major points of interest!

Original Wisconsin Ducks ® is the ONLY duck tour in the world in continuous operation since 1946. Follow this historic timeline to see how it all began, how the tour has grown and evolved, and how we’ll continue to deliver our promise of Fun! Adventure! On Land and Water! ® for years to come.

A New Weapon for the Allies

With the advent of World War II and the near-constant bombardment of port cities, the Allied Forces realize that an amphibious craft is needed to ferry troops and supplies directly from ship to shore. The answer comes on June 3, 1942 when a pilot version of a 6-wheeled, 2.5-ton amphibious truck is readied for testing. The vehicle proves reliable and versatile, and an initial order of 600 is placed with a delivery date of December 31, 1942.

duck tour history

SO WHY IS IT CALLED A “DUCK?”

As a United States military vehicle, this new amphibious truck is assigned a code: DUKW. “D” represents 1942, the year of its design. “U” indicates a utility vehicle. “K” means all-wheel drive capability. And “W” signifies duel rear-driving axels. But it isn’t long before American soldiers look at the code and the vehicle’s land and water capabilities, and in typical GI fashion simplify it to the nickname “Duck.”

duck tour history

1943 – 1953

An outstanding service record.

Ducks first see action as part of General Patton’s invasion force at Sicily. Despite poor weather conditions, the vehicles perform admirably and are soon slated for duty on D-Day, throughout the European theatre, and the island-hopping campaign in the Pacific. The Ducks prove indispensable. By the end of their production in 1945, a total of 21,147 DUKWs are produced.

duck tour history

1945 – 1946

Civilian life.

While the military continue to use some DUKWs in limited roles (mostly notably, the Korean War), the majority of vehicles stationed stateside are decommissioned and offered to the general public via army surplus. Soon Ducks are being used by communities for everything from fire-fighting to water rescue. But a man named Bob Unger had another idea.

duck tour history

MAIDEN VOYAGE: THE FIRST DUCK TOUR

The tour that would become Original Wisconsin Ducks ® is launched in the summer of 1946. Bob Unger owned an army surplus Duck. Mel Flath had the idea for a ride, and Helen Raab leased them land she owned between Lake Delton and the Wisconsin River for the tour. The first tour is pictured at left, with Raab and her friends in the back, and Unger behind the wheel.

duck tour history

DELLS CORPORATION FOUNDED

In 1947, Helen Raab and Dr. Reinhold Ebert form the Dells Corporation, which represents the land holdings and trails used on the tour. This area, filled with fern dells, rocky gorges, and beautiful wilderness, is known as the Lower Dells Scenic Park. Herman Breitenbach manages the holdings and Raab and Ebert begin purchasing more Ducks for the future.

duck tour history

COLORFUL CHANGES

Dr. Ebert buys out Mel Flath to become sole owner of the business, named Wisconsin Dells Amphibian Lines, while retaining a 50% share of the Dells Corporation. He names the Ducks after Native Americans, adds canopies, paints the vehicles in many vibrant colors, and builds a new Duck Dock at our current location, 1890 Wisconsin Dells Parkway.

duck tour history

CHANGING OF THE GUARD

In May 1956, Dr. Ebert and Helen Raab transfer their interests in Wisconsin Dells Amphibious Lines and the Dells Corporation to an ownership group compromised of four Wisconsin Dells boat companies. The new company is named Wisconsin Ducks, Inc. with Ben Olson becoming the first General Manager.

duck tour history

WELCOMING A NEW STANDARD

In 1959, new General Manager Walt Stanton standardizes the Ducks with their classic green and white colors, changes the majority of Duck names to places the vehicles served in World War II, and introduces the iconic slogan “Fun! Adventure! On Land and Water!” Positive, impactful contributions that leave a lasting and visible legacy for decades to come.

duck tour history

1950 – 1960

Meeting friends along the trail.

Original Wisconsin Ducks ® exclusive wilderness trails are famous for giving passengers an up-close view of wildlife, from whitetail deer and turkey to fox and beaver. But during the mid-century, tour-goers also enjoyed frequent sightings of goats! Helen Raab introduced a small herd in the 1950s, and it continued to thrive in the area near Hawk’s Bill thru the late 1960s. The goats would often approach the Ducks, looking for sugar cubes.

duck tour history

PLUCKY PROMOTIONS

From the days of Helen Raab and Herman Breitenbach, promoting the Original Wisconsin Ducks ® takes many fun and ingenious forms, from advertising and press coverage to driving Ducks through downtown Milwaukee and Chicago! The brochure at left (used in the late 1950s and early 1960s) is proof that the Fun and Adventure of the tour was often reflected in the ads.

duck tour history

1950 – 1970

Steady leadership in changing times.

Wisconsin Dells continues to grow as a vacation destination and Wisconsin Ducks continues to grow in popularity. New challenges come with new growth, but the consistent leadership of men, like Jack Anchor, John Dixon, and Matt Bubon help the attraction continue to grow and thrive, under its new official name of ORIGINAL WISCONSIN DUCKS ® .

duck tour history

SPREADING OUR WINGS

The decade sees Original Wisconsin Ducks ® launching new initiatives to meet growing customer demands and keep up with the changing social landscape. A new Duck Dock is built in 1975, the first female Duck driver is hired in 1977, and Aquaduck Cruise Tours (pictured at left) is purchased (also in 1977). This added 16 more Ducks to our rapidly expanding fleet.

duck tour history

TRADITION MEETS INOVATION

Since 1946, Original Wisconsin Ducks ® has been constantly striving to maintain a high quality tour. One key to this goal is enhancing vehicle performance without sacrificing its historic integrity. In the late 1980s, TINIAN (pictured at right) becomes the first Duck converted to diesel power for improved fuel efficiency, performance and reliability.

duck tour history

MAKING A GREAT THING EVEN BETTER

From the beginning, Original Wisconsin Ducks ® has operated on exclusive trails thru the Lower Dells Scenic Park. As development along the Park’s outer borders increases, a decision is made to enhance the tour by modifying the route and re-opening old trails in the heart of the forest. Passengers now get a first-hand look at sights (like Black Hawk Gorge, at left) not seen in 1950.

duck tour history

2008 And 2009

Disaster and renewal.

In the Spring of 2008, heavy rain causes Lake Delton to rise 51.5″ over flood stage. A breach occurs in the strip of land between the Lake and the Wisconsin River, draining the Lake in two hours. The challenging summer season sees Original Wisconsin Ducks ® operating river-only tours. Thanks to the efforts of State and Local officials, the breach is repaired and Lake Delton is restored by summer of 2009.

duck tour history

NEW ADVANCES FOR A CLASSIC VEHICLE

For 60 years, Original Wisconsin Ducks ® continues its operation by searching out and acquiring more Ducks to replace retiring vehicles. In the new century, a combination of technological advances and the creativity and expertise of our mechanics allow for a new approach. Enhancing (and even rebuilding) existing Ducks to be better than new!

duck tour history

1947 TO PRESENT

A constant and trustworthy guide.

Since 1947, a staple of Original Wisconsin Ducks ® has been the guidebook of the tour, the first being penned by Helen Raab herself. Throughout the years, the guidebook has been revised, updated and redesigned, always with an eye to offering passengers a more complete understanding of the Duck tour and an appreciation of the Dells’ rich history and natural beauty. The guidebook at right was offered in the 1950s and 1960s.

A 70TH YEAR CELEBRATION

The summer of 2015 marked the 70th year of operation for Original Wisconsin Ducks ® , the only Duck tour in the world to operate non-stop over such a time span. The event is commemorated with special promotions, “Heritage Ducks” decorated in mid-century colors and slogans, and the first ever Duck driver reunion. One weekend in June, over 400 drivers from all eras converged in Wisconsin Dells to take part in a grand celebration.

PRESENT DAY

Welcome aboard.

Today, Original Wisconsin Ducks ® continues to look forward, focused on providing a tour that delivers quality, safety and the ultimate in Fun! Adventure! On Land and Water! Boasting the world’s largest fleet of Ducks (90 vehicles) and the passion and commitment of our drivers, mechanics and managers, we’re ready and able to welcome you aboard, now and for decades to come.

duck tour history

Running an attraction as unique and challenging as Original Wisconsin Ducks ® takes more than an amphibious vehicle. It requires vision, dedication, innovation, and passion from everyone involved. Here is a look at the people behind the vehicles; Our drivers and mechanics strive to ensure safety and quality for Fun and Adventure on Land and Water, every day, on every tour.

DUCK DRIVERS

Your driver is as big a part of making the duck tour a fun, safe and entertaining experience as the Duck itself. Their individuality and personality add to the experience, making each Duck tour truly unique. Duck drivers must be at least 18 years of age and able to perform all job tasks, from driving and maintaining the duck to assisting passengers and ensuring their safety. Because of high season demand, college students on summer break make up the majority of our drivers. Original Wisconsin Ducks ® hires male and female drivers who are expected to know and follow the employee manual, pass pre-employment and random drug tests, possess a DOT Commercial Drivers License, and pass the DNR Boating Safety Class. Learning to drive a Duck is both a skill and an art. New drivers are taught “Duck driving basics,” followed by one month of driving practice (including learning the tour and riding along with experienced drivers). Driving and guiding skills are then assessed. It takes an average of six weeks of training before an Original Wisconsin Ducks ® driver is ready to hit the trail! To apply, CONTACT US HERE .

An amphibious Duck is an exceptional machine. In addition to all the parts and maintenance required for any multi-ton truck, there are many vehicle aspects unique to wartime and non-military water operation. Factor in the Duck‘s 1942-1945 vintage, and it’s clear to see why the Duck is a special vehicle that requires special attention. Since 1946, Original Wisconsin Ducks ® has maintained a highly skilled team of full-time mechanics who keep the vehicles running in tip-top shape throughout the operating season. In addition to being mechanical wizards, our “Duck Doctors” are also artists in metal and machinery, able to fashion and fabricate parts, re-engineer Ducks to accommodate diesel engines, and even rebuild a Duck from the frame up!

only for creative minds.
