You Can Take the World's Longest Bus Ride from Delhi to London Next Year

The 70-day trek travels through 18 countries across Asia and Europe

delhi to london bus tour

With flying taking a spot on the back burner this year, it’s no wonder we’ve seen a boom in overland travel, from road trips in RVs to cross-country train rides . But the most impressive land-based journey we’ve stumbled upon is a brand new 12,500-mile bus route between Delhi to London.

Operated by Adventures Overland , a tour company based in Gurugram, India, the Bus to London expedition will depart from Delhi in May and travel through 18 countries over 70 days en route to its final destination: London. The journey will be leisurely, taking a meandering route that brings passengers to the temples of Southeast Asia, the Great Wall of China, the Silk Road Central Asia, and thriving metropolises across Europe, too. In August, it’ll follow the same route in reverse.

The journey is a nod back to the middle of the 20th century when bus routes from Europe to Asia were somewhat common. “Before it all began, and India gained the attention of the Western tourist seeking a slice of ‘oriental mysticism,’ there were two kinds of overland travelers on these routes—those who took organized bus tours like Indiaman, Albert, Silver Express, etc., and then there was the Hippie Trail,” writes Adventures Overland in a brochure for the trip. “Hordes of young men and women packed themselves in ‘magic buses’ and traveled overland from Europe to Asia, in search of ‘enlightenment.’”

The Bus to London journey, however, is a luxury experience—the entire trip will cost $20,000, though it does include hotel stays, meals (sans alcoholic beverages), visa fees, guided tours, and some entrance fees to sights and attractions, not to mention transportation via a coach bus with business-class-style seats, personal entertainment systems, WiFi, and USB ports for charging.

If you’re looking to book the full journey in either direction, there are only 20 seats available, though there are extra seats available for each of the trip’s four segments, which range from 12 to 21 nights and can be booked independently.

Adventures Overland has long been in the business of driving journeys, and it has operated the Delhi to London route since 2017—but only in self-driving caravans. The Bus to London experience will be the company’s first tour in a coach.

There’s a new bus service planned between India and London: 12,000 miles, 70 days, crossing 18 countries

Coach bus

As the travel industry reopens following COVID-19 shutdowns, TPG suggests that you talk to your doctor, follow health officials' guidance and research local travel restrictions before booking that next trip. We will be here to help you prepare, whether it is next month or next year.

Does the "longest bus journey in the world" tickle your fancy? For all you road trip fans, in May 2021, you can spend 70 days in a luxury coach traveling from Delhi to London .

It's the first hop-on, hop-off bus service covering the marathon journey from India to England and will cover 12,000 miles.

Adventures Overland is offering 20 people the chance to take part in this bus odyssey and it will cost roughly $20,000 per person.

A bus is being boarded by a group of travellers, ready to begin their journey.

The journey's start date may be postponed but owners Sanjay Madan and Tushar Agarwal are eager to get cracking.

The website says: "The last few months have altered life for all of us, and the COVID-19 pandemic will continue for a while. Keeping this in mind, we will only start accepting bookings once there is clarity with respect to travel regulations, both locally and internationally."

The bus will depart from Delhi and drive across India before journeying into South East Asia through Myanmar, Thailand and Laos. It will then head to China and Central Asia, before finishing in Europe.

The luxury coach has Wi-Fi and lots of legroom apparently and don't worry, you won't actually be sleeping on it -- most nights will be spent in four or five-star hotels -- hence the fairly steep ticket price.

From there the bus will trundle along the famed Silk Road, crossing into Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. Russia is next with stops planned in Astrakhan, Volga and Moscow, as well as a day cruise on the Caspian Sea.

Finally, into Europe, passengers will take in Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland before heading to Prague , Frankfurt then Belgium.

After 68 days on the road, passengers will arrive in London for two days of sightseeing and can review all of those new passport stamps.

Included in the cost of the trip are all hotel stays, guides and fees related to visas, immigration, sightseeing and movement permits. Planned meals and daily snacks and drinks are also included in the cost. Click here to find out more about tickets and booking.

Delhi to London by bus: 70-day trip crosses 18 countries and tickets cost Dh74,000

The first stage of the 20,000-kilometre journey is set to depart india for the uk in may 2021.

Hayley Skirka author image

The first hop-on, hop-off bus service from India to England is set to depart Delhi in May 2021.

Travel company Adventures Overland is calling the trip the "longest bus journey in the world" and is offering 20 people the chance to travel from Delhi to London by luxury coach.

The driving expedition specialist announced details of its Bus to London odyssey that will cover more than 20,000 kilometres across 18 countries over 70 days.

Like many things this year, the journey's start date may be postponed further, but owners Sanjay Madan and Tushar Agarwal are keen to push ahead with their ambitious road trip.

"The last few months have altered life for all of us, and the Covid-19 pandemic will continue for a while. Keeping this in mind, we will only start accepting bookings once there is clarity with respect to travel regulations, both locally and internationally," explains Adventures Overland's  website.

When the trip does get going, it looks set to be epic. The bus will depart from Delhi and drive across India before journeying into South-East Asia through Myanmar, Thailand and Laos. It will then head to China and Central Asia, before finishing up in Europe.

Tickets for the road trip cost Dh73,510 per person – although the company says costs could vary closer to the departure date.

Only 20 passengers can book the entire trip, but there are options for anyone keen to join for one or two stages of the cross-country overland journey.

Travellers will be riding in comfort on a converted luxury coach, and will have access to free Wi-Fi and an entertainment system, as well as adjustable business-class seats with plenty legroom. Most nights will be spent at four or five-star hotels, with selected destinations having boutique accommodation.

Journey across 18 countries

The road trip will take in 18 countries, including the Czech Republic, where travellers will get to explore Prague. Unsplash

After Laos the bus will continue on to China. Travellers will then spend 16 days journeying through the sprawling country with planned stops including meeting pandas in Chengdu, walking the Great Wall, visiting the Mogao Caves and driving through the Gobi Desert.

Food is a big part of travel and Adventures Overland will organise meals at local restaurants and cafes in each location, and will provide English-speaking guides to share historical facts and interesting information about each destination.

From China, the bus will trundle along the well-trodden route of the Silk Road, crossing into Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. The expedition will then head into Russia, with planned visits to Astrakhan, Volga and Moscow, as well as a day cruise on the Caspian Sea.

The final stage of the journey will take in Europe, starting in the Baltic countries of Latvia and Lithuania, and continuing on to Poland. Travellers will visit the Czech capital of Prague, and Frankfurt in Germany, then drive towards Belgium.

After 68 days on the road, passengers will arrive in London with two days reserved for sightseeing in the UK's capital.

What’s included?

Included in the cost of the trip are all hotel stays, guides and fees related to visas, immigration, sightseeing and movement permits. Planned meals and daily snacks and drinks are also included in the cost, but additional sustenance costs  extra.

Sightseeing costs are included in the fare, with trips to places like the Great Wall of China on the itinerary. Unsplash

Adventures Overland's owners could set a new world record with the trip, but it won't be their first. The pair are already Guinness World Record holders, having made the longest journey in a foreign country when they travelled 17,107km across Australia in 2013.

London calling

This won't be the first time that Adventures Overland has driven from India to the UK. The company has hosted self-driving expeditions  for which people have come together to embark on mass road trips from Delhi to London. However, it's the first time the company will organise the journey by coach. The return leg will set off from England back to India in August 2021.

The 70-day journey will culminate in London. Unsplash

Although the trip looks set to be the first overland bus journey to travel from Delhi to London, it cannot claim the record for being the first tourist bus to travel from India to the UK. That title belongs to the Indiaman bus, which travelled from London to Kolkata and back again in 1957. It had 20 passengers and round-trip fares reportedly cost only £65 (Dh312) per person.

An India-based company will launch the epic journey through 18 countries for 20 passengers in May 2021.

delhi to london bus tour

Update (April 23, 2021): The Bus to London, originally scheduled for May 2021, has been postponed to April 2022, due to COVID-19.

Traveling around the world in 80 days may have been a feat for Jules Verne, but an India-based travel company is launching an equally impressive 70-day bus ride from Delhi to London, departing in May 2021.

The Bus to London will travel 12,427 miles (20,000 kilometers) through 18 countries, including Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, China, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and France.

The service will be operated by Adventures Overland , whose founders Sanjay Madan and Tushar Agarwal came up with the idea to mimic the “magic buses” that traveled on the Hippie Trail from Europe to Asia between the 1950s and 1970s, Lonely Planet reports .

Bus to London will take 20 passengers from Delhi, India, to London, England, and then reverse the journey back to India, with stops to see Myanmar’s pagodas, visit Chengdu’s giant pandas, hike along the Great Wall of China, cruise the Caspian Sea, and enjoy time in Moscow, Vilnius, Prague, Brussels, and Frankfurt.

The journey will take place on a Wi-Fi-equipped luxury bus with business-class seats , each with its own entertainment system, USB ports, and electricity plugs, as well as partitions between seats for privacy. The common spaces include a mini pantry with a cooler for beverages and snacks. Each passenger can bring two full-sized suitcases and will also have their own locker to store valuables.

To sign up for the ride, first download the Bus to London brochure . During the process, you’ll be given the options to join legs in Southeast Asia for 12 days, China for 16 days, Central Asia for 22 days, or Europe for 16 days — or the entire trip for 70 days. The reverse itinerary is also available. Preference will be given to those who sign up for the entire stretch.

This isn’t the first time Adventures Overland has led trips from India to London. In 2017 , 2018 , and 2019 , it led a caravan of travelers, each in their own cars, traveling the route in 50 days.

This Bus Service Will Take You From Delhi to London Via 18 Countries in 70 days

This will be the second time in 46 years that people will have the opportunity to travel by bus from Delhi to London.

This will be the second time in 46 years that people will have the opportunity to travel by bus from Delhi to London.

The entire road trip will cost you Rs 15 lakhs.

For travellers eyeing the ultimate long road trip of a lifetime, Adventures Overland has announced plans to restart its bus service from Delhi to London with the normalisation of movement on the India-Myanmar border.

The service is expected to begin in September this year with the departure of luxury buses offering state-of-the-art facilities from Delhi.

Once the route is finalised, participants in Adventures Overland’s Bus to London initiative will be able to travel to 18 countries over a distance of approximately 20,000 kilometres in 70 days.

The entire road trip will cost you Rs 15 lakhs. The pricing includes all services, such as tickets, visas, and lodging in various countries.

This will be the second time in 46 years that people will have the opportunity to travel by bus from Delhi to London. A similar bus service was unveiled by a British company in 1957 which connected Kolkata to London via Delhi.

The service however was discontinued a few years after the bus met with an accident. After this, a company by the name Albert Tours started a double-decker bus service between Sydney-India-London which continued till 1976 but was stopped due to the internal conflict in Iran and the tensions between India and Pakistan.

The news bus service will bypass all the routes because of which the previous bus services were discontinued. It will now travel to France via Myanmar, Thailand, China, and Kyrgyzstan, rather than Pakistan and Afghanistan. In addition, a cruise ship will also be used to cross the English Channel.

A ferry service will be utilised to transport the bus from Calais, France, to Dover, England, and will take approximately two hours to conclude. The bus will then depart for London.

The bus will have 20 seats and each of the passengers will have their cabin. It will have everything including dining, drinking, and sleeping facilities. You can travel on this bus with all of the necessary documents, including your visa.

Fancy Taking An Epic Bus Journey From London To Delhi?

Eighteen countries, 70 days, and 20,000km - the new London to Delhi bus journey really isn't one for the easily carsick...

Alex Landon

Fancy a trip to India ? How about you jump on the bus ? You know, the one dubbed ‘the Bus to London ‘? It goes both ways…

Originally slated to launch back in 2021, the longest bus journey in the world is finally kicking into gear from April 2023. Not just any old bus route, this bus will take you all the way from London to Delhi , or, indeed, back again if you were on the original bus that runs from Delhi to London.

London to Delhi Bus

That’s a 20,000km journey, spanning some 70 days and passing through no fewer than eighteen countries during the trip. It crosses two continents! On a bus! The mind really does boggle at the prospect of spending so long on a bus, especially for someone who’s been known to grumble if the 35 gets stuck at traffic lights for too long. Who would even think up such a journey? we hear you asking. We refer you to Adventures Overland , an India-based expedition company who specialise in ambitious trips to far-flung places. For all appearances they seem more than happy to jump behind the wheel and start driving wherever their fancy takes them.

London to Delhi Bus

Okay, but… Why?

They’re following the example of The Indiaman bus, which took 20 passengers from London to India in 1957. Now, technically, Adventures Overland is reversing the route, as their maiden voyage will be from Delhi to London. But that bus has got to get home somehow. So they’ll also be running the trip the other way, which is where our interest is piqued. The bus will journey through the UK, France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, and finally India. The journey ends in Delhi.

St. Basil's Cathedral, Moscow

The journey will take in a wealth of unforgettable sights and experiences. See the canals of Amsterdam, Moscow’s Red Square, the Kazakh steppe, the Great Wall of China, and the temples of Thailand and Myanmar. Hang out with giant pandas, wander the bazaars of Bishkek, and cruise on the Caspian Sea. It’s a whistle-stop tour for the restless traveller, packing in a lifetime’s worth of bucket list destinations into one bus trip. Plus, you’ll be travelling in as much comfort as a bus can afford. All seats are Business Class, with plenty of legroom, built-in entertainment systems, private lockers, Wi-Fi, and a mini pantry for water and snacks.

Bagan, Myanmar

Should the full 70 days prove too much of a stretch to you, you can opt to join the journey for one or more of the trip’s four legs (London-Moscow, Moscow-Bishkek, Kashgar-Chengdu, Bangkok-Imphal). There are only 20 seats available, so you’ll want to act quickly to secure your place on what is sure to be a once-in-a-lifetime journey for anyone involved. Except the founders that is. This is probably like a daily commute to them at this point.

The trip from Delhi to London is scheduled to run in April 2023. The return trip from London to Delhi will take place in August 2023.
