Tour Highlights

image of Highlight Callanish Standing Stones

The Callanish Standing Stones are an archaeological wonder. Their position is linked to astronomical activity but their purpose remains a mystery. The 5000 year old stones lay hidden under layers of peat until they were unearthed in the 19th century.

image of Highlight Isle of Harris

Harris is Scotland’s paradise. The island boasts stark and striking contrasts, from moody mountains and lunar-like landscapes, to the famous beaches on the west coast. It’s hard to believe the powdery white-sand and turquoise sea belongs in Scotland.

image of Highlight Old Man of Storr Isle of Skye tours Scotland

The Old Man of Storr is a striking pinnacle of rock, perched high upon Skye’s otherworldly landscape. This geological wonder is one of the island’s most iconic sights - it looks even more impressive on a misty day.

image of Highlight Jacobite Steam Train

The Jacobite Steam Train shot to worldwide fame as the Hogwarts Express in the Harry Potter films. The route between Fort William and Mallaig on the West Highland Line has been voted the most scenic rail journey in the world.

image of Highlight Dun Carloway Broch

A broch is an Iron Age defence structure which is unique to Scotland. Dun Carloway is one of the best-preserved examples, with chambers, staircases and the remains of nine metre wall still intact after 2000 years.

image of Highlight Gearrannan Blackhouse Village

Gearrannan Blackhouse Village offers a glimpse into the traditional Hebridean way of life, including Harris Tweed weaving. The crofting village, which is now a conservation area, was occupied until the 1970s when the last residents moved to more modern accommodation.

image of Highlight Isle of Skye

Skye is Scotland’s most popular isle, and you’ll quickly understand why. Skye exudes magic from every mountain, waterfall and rainbow, while its unique geology and beguiling mythology are unlike anywhere else in Scotland. Skye is an ancient and truly enchanting island.

image of Highlight Portree

Portree is Skye’s central hub and most populated town, with numerous shops and places to eat. The main square is a hive of activity, while the quaint harbour with its brightly coloured facades is lifted straight from a postcard.

image of Highlight Highlight Image

Kilt Rock is a breath-taking sight on Skye’s dramatic coastline. Marvel at the magic of Mealt Falls, as it cascades down the striking cliff face - which is said to be shaped by a mythical giant’s kilt.

image of Highlight Glen Coe

This jaw-dropping landscape is the most atmospheric and evocative place in Scotland. Glen Coe translates as the ‘weeping glen’, and the name reflects the sad history of the area, as well as the many waterfalls which cascade from misty peaks.

image of Highlight Inverness Scotland tours

Inverness is world-famous for its proximity to Loch Ness, and its connections to the Outlander story. Known as the ‘Capital of the Highlands’, Inverness has numerous pubs where Highland hospitality is best served with a local drink and live music.

image of Highlight Loch Ness Scotland tours

Loch Ness is the most well-known loch in Scotland, thanks to tales of the Loch Ness Monster. Glaciers carved the deep cavity of the loch, which holds more water than all the lakes in England and Wales.

image of Highlight Eilean Donan Castle

Eilean Donan Castle is perfectly formed and instantly recognisable. A charming stone bridge leads out to the island, which is surrounded by three lochs and a backdrop of mountains. The castle is one of the most photographed sights in Scotland.

image of Highlight Kelpies Scotland tours

The Kelpies are steel sculptures of two horses’ heads; 30 meters high and weighing 300 tonnes. Kelpies are mythological creatures in Scottish folklore, and this modern attraction is the largest equine landmark in the world, designed by Scottish artist Andy Scott.

image of Highlight Ullapool

Ullapool is an idyllic fishing town in the north-west coast of the Scottish Highlands. Here, you can explore quaint shops, savour fresh seafood, or stroll along the town's shores while watching the sun set over the North Atlantic Ocean.

What Other Explorers Say

Loved the views and landscapes the whole group was so nice had fun with them Our tour guide was amazing she told great stories about Scotland and was always really nice and helpful. Had a really nice experience with highland explorer tours would really recommend this tour for everyone.

Our first time doing a tour. 1538km later. 22 of us left as strangers and returned as friends. What a wonderful experience Scotland has been. Ali P was our guide and was awesome. Fun and friendly but ran a tight ship to ensure we made as many destinations as possible. BnBs were all great. Wish I could do it all again. Can't fault a thing. Thank you Ali P 😊

My 14 year old daughter and I had a great time on our trip. It felt like we really got lucky booking this trip. We got to see so much and nearly nothing was crowded. Tim our tour guide seemed to time everything so well. He was also super knowledgeable and a great storyteller. I also felt like Tim was a very safe driver.

We had the best time- Tiim (Timothy) is an amazing driver, story-teller and guide. We can’t wait to come back- I still have Caledonia in my head and Mary Queen of Scots is my new hero! No otters but we did see a whale! 3 Americans, 9 Aussies, 2 Welch, 2 Canadians and a Dane make for an epic 6 days!

Touring the magical landscapes of the Outer Hebrides and the Isle of Skye demands an equally magical storyteller. We have just returned from our tour and I can happily say that we had just that ! Steve was the perfect guide in every way, knowledgeable, charming, funny, helpful, and organized. If you’re lucky enough to be able to take this tour and to have Steve as your guide you will not be disappointed. Great experience, very well curated and narrated, with great tunes ...

The ethereal landscapes of the Highlands are beyond imagination. Couple them with our effusive and engaging guide, Steve, and you have the best of vision, storytelling, and music.

A terrific 6 days. The success of any tour can never be just the places you visit. The weather, accommodation assuming multiple days, size and make up of the group, comfort of the bus all play a part. But you need a fantastic, talented, knowledgeable, quick witted and engaging tour guide and we did. ‘Sophie’ was all of these and more. She kept us entertained with lots of information, updates times and places coming up, histories, stories of the myths and mysteries of th...

Is the Jacobite Steam Train and Eilean Donan Castle included in the tour price?

The 2-hour ride on the Jacobite Steam Train and Eilean Donan Castle entry are optional experiences and are not included in the tour price. You can add the Jacobite Steam Train at the time of booking, whereas the entry for Eilean Donan Castle can be paid on arrival at the destination.

Full Tour Itinerary

Select Day:

Day 1 - Edinburgh/Glasgow - Mallaig - Benbecula

From Edinburgh and Glasgow, we make our way into the beauty of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park . Following a drive along the “bonnie, bonnie banks” and with a song in our heart, we continue through the countryside to reach the remote wilderness of Rannoch Moor.

The haunting atmosphere persists to this day in magnificent Glen Coe , where the Campbells massacred the MacDonalds in 1692. From there we make for Fort William for close-up views of Ben Nevis, Britain’s tallest mountain.

From Fort William we make our way along the famed “ Road to the Isles ”, undoubtedly one of Scotland’s most scenic routes. Our journey will take us to Glenfinnan, where we will see the famous viaduct that stars in the Harry Potter movies. Next, we travel along the banks of Loch Eilt and see the beautiful sands of Morar.

At the historic fishing port of Mallaig, we join the ferry for the crossing to Lochboisdale on South Uist. Dinner will be served on-board, and when we arrive, it’s a short drive to our hotel on the neighbouring island of Benbecula.

Overnight: Dark Island Hotel, Benbecula (or similar) (2 nights)

Day 2 - Eriskay and Vatersay Excursion

After a leisurely breakfast, we join the rest of our party for a drive through South Uist and across the causeway to reach Eriskay. This little island is just three miles long and two miles wide and has a beautiful sandy beach known as Prince Charlie’s Bay. It was here that Bonnie Prince Charlie landed in July 1745 at the start of the ill-fated Jacobite Uprising.

From Eriskay we join a ferry for the short crossing to Barra. On arrival, we drive to Castlebay, the main village on the island, where we visit Kisimul Castle .

Kisimul is the only remaining medieval castle to be found in the Outer Hebrides and is the seat of the Clan MacNeil. It sits on a little islet in the middle of the bay so, just like the chieftains of old, we’ll take a boat to reach this ancient fortress where we’ll see the grand hall, kitchen, dungeon and tower.

Later, we will travel to see Cockleshell Beach, which doubles as the runway for Barra Airport . Barra is served by a twice-daily service from Glasgow, to a timetable that is governed by the tides.

Overlooking the beach is the home of the famous author Sir Compton Mackenzie, who wrote ‘Whisky Galore’. The book is based on the true story of a shipwreck in 1941. The cargo included 260,000 bottles of whisky, much of which was “rescued” before the official salvage team arrived.

The story was made into a classic film in 1949. Much of the filming took place on Vatersay, which is next on our island-hopping itinerary. This little island is famed for the many species of wildflower that can be found here.

Later we return to Eriskay by ferry and make our way back to our hotel in time for dinner.

Day 3 - Benbecula - Isle of Harris - Stornoway

After breakfast, it’s time to move on to explore Harris and Lewis. First, we make our way through the lochans of Benbecula and into North Uist. At Berneray we catch the ferry for Leverburgh of the Isle of Harris.

Our first stop is to the little village of Rodel, where we will visit St Clements Church . This 16th Century church was built on an earlier building by Alasdair Crotach, 8th Chief of the MacLeods of Harris. He died in 1547 and is buried here in an ornate tomb which is decorated with fine carvings.

Harris is famed for its beautiful beaches, and we’ll pass Horgabost , Borve and Scarasta, which have some of the finest sands to be found anywhere. Enjoy the views over the sound to the island of Taransay, which featured in the popular “Castaway” TV series.

We will make a stop in Tarbert, the main community on the island before travelling through the Harris mountains to reach the moors of Lewis and our home for the next two nights in Stornoway.

Overnight: Caberfeidh Hotel, Stornoway (or similar) (2 nights)

Day 4 - Exploring the Isle of Lewis

Today ancient history is on the itinerary as we explore the treasures of Isle of Lewis. First, we make for the west coast of the island to see the mysterious Standing Stones of Callanish . Thought to be 5,000 years old this collection of monoliths is believed to be older than Stonehenge or the Pyramids. The visitor centre contains interactive displays which investigate how the stones were built and what their purpose might have been.

Next, we move on to the Black Houses at Gearannan , to discover how islanders lived, not so very long ago, in these sturdy houses made of drystone walls and thatched roofs.

Our last visit of the day is to the Norse Mill at Shawbost. This reconstruction of an Iron Age grain mill is built on the site of the original mill used by Norsemen.

There are two buildings The Kiln, where grains was dried by a peat fire and The Corn Mill, which is powered by water from Loch Roinavat. The mill was in use up until the 1930s and provides a fascinating view of life on these islands.

Day 5 - Stornoway - Inverness - Edinburgh/Glasgow

We catch the early morning ferry from Stornoway. Breakfast will be served on-board, and there will be time to head out on deck to enjoy the view as we pass the Summer isles and make our approach to Ullapool by sailing up Loch Broom.

Back on our coach, we make our way through the North West Highlands to reach the Black Isle then across the Moray Firth into Inverness. The tour will continue through the Cairngorms National Park then a descend through the Pass of Drumochter to reach Highland Perthshire , where there will be a stop.

The last part of our journey will be through the Kingdom of Fife, then across the Firth of Forth and into Edinburgh. The coach will continue to Glasgow, for those wishing to end the tour there.

Things To See & Do

Isle of Lewis ‘must do’ list:

Step back in time and wonder about the meaning and purpose of the standing stones at Callanish  – or Calanais in Gaelic. You can walk right among them and soak up the atmosphere across the millennia. Nearby Carloway Broch is one of the best-surviving examples of a fortified dwelling, not as ancient as the standing stones, but equally impressive. You can learn more about traditional island life in a blackhouse village, with its preserved thatched cottages. Stornoway boasts more-modern experiences, with a bustling social scene and arts centre, and is famous above all for its spicy black pudding – some claim it’s the best in Scotland – do try it at breakfast.

Isle of Harris ‘must do’ list:

You’ll be spoilt for choice along the south-west coast of the Isle of Harris, as one expansive white sandy beach after another unfurls before your eyes. Sometimes it’s hard to know where one ends and the next starts. On a sunny day, the contrasting pure turquoise waters give rise to many a comparison with the Caribbean, yet here you won’t need to wander far to find solitude and tranquillity, with not a sunbed in sight. On the opposite coast, travel the ‘Golden Road’ – a ribbon of tarmac meandering across a barren and rocky lunar landscape. You’ll still come across crofter’s cottages where you can watch Harris Tweed being woven and perhaps treat yourself to a special souvenir. And – if you’re feeling particularly adventurous – Harris is the best departure point for boat trips out into the Atlantic to the long-abandoned St Kilda archipelago, on the very edge of the British Isles (advance reservations vital – please ask us).

North & South Uist ‘must do’ list:

Explore more endless white-shell beaches along the western shores, and gaze at an unspoilt landscape of peat bog and heather-clad moorland, interspersed with pools of water – fabulous for photographs when the light is right. If you fancy a spot of fishing, then Uist’s thousands of freshwater lochs can answer your every whim. Get closer to nature at the RSPB reserve at Balranald, one of the best spots for wildlife in the UK. Sit by the visitor centre and listen for the distinctive rasping call of the rare corncrake, take the path to the shore or join one of the guided walks which take place through the summer months. Technically a different island, but easy to reach via causeway, Berneray is another beautiful wilderness, with great seal-spotting, fabulous views and  – you guessed it – more amazing beaches!

Barra and Eriskay ‘must do’ list:

There aren’t many places in the world where we’d recommend you spend an hour or two at the airport – even if you aren’t due to fly – but you won’t find another airport anywhere in the world like Barra’s …where the runway is a cockleshell strand, the timetable varies with the tide and you can enjoy delicious home-cooking while you wait. There’s another great beach just over the dunes, too. It’s easy to understand the naming of the main town as Castlebay – from whichever direction you approach, your eyes will be drawn to Kisimul Castle, ancestral clan seat of the MacNeils, seemingly floating in the bay. Hop aboard the wee boat run by Historic Scotland and see it up close for yourself. Chat to locals in the bar about life on the island and get a taste of it by trying some tooth-achingly sweet but delicious Hebridean Toffee. Tick off the neighbouring islands. Vatersay’s apple-core beaches are a stunning spectacle, though tainted with tragedy as the sites of a major shipwreck in 1843 and plane crash in 1944 – reminders that these are remote and wild shores. The most famous shipwreck of all – the inspiration behind Whisky Galore!  – happened on the Isle of Eriskay, reached by a short ferry-ride from Barra. Take time to linger by the dock and beautiful Prince Charlie Bay. Perhaps also take a drive around the island – it’s not that big – and spot some cute Eriskay ponies before stopping for a quick refreshment in Am Politician – a simple-looking bungalow, now a pub, but which houses many a relic of the ship with its doomed whisky cargo.

Travelling To & Around

The islands are connected by ferry routes from Oban and Ullapool, on the West coast of Scotland, and for those who prefer shorter crossings you can also access the islands from the North of the Isle of Skye. You can then travel by a series of causeways and ferry crossings between the islands. Grappling with the timetables – sometimes subject to tidal change – is not for the faint-hearted, however, so why not leave it to us? We can work out the best combinations and timings to ensure you get the most out of your adventure

If time is short, there are also flight connections from Glasgow and Edinburgh to Lewis, and of course the unique experience of landing on the beach runway on the Isle of Barra is on many “bucket-lists”,  with daily services from Glasgow. As a fully bonded tour operator, licensed with the Civil Aviation Authority, McKinlay Kidd can offer fly-drive holidays, complete with one-way car hire, flights, accommodation and inter-island ferries. Leave it to us and enjoy a stress-free holiday!

You admire spectacular views and listen to a haunting story in Glencoe before you continue north up the Great Glen to the mysterious beauty of Loch Ness.

You arrive at Inverness, where you’re dropped off at your booked accommodation. The evening is free for you to explore the 'Capital of the Highlands'.

  • Explore mainland Scotland’s most northern scenery
  • Arrive in the Capital of Orkney, Kirkwall

It’s an early start, leaving behind the 'Capital of the Highlands', crossing over the Black Isle, and continuing past Dunrobin Castle.

From here, you drive along the northeast Highland coastline, travelling into some of Scotland's most dramatic scenery.

Onwards through Scotland's most northerly mainland village, John o' Groats, and then to Gills Bay, where you board the ferry, and cross the Pentland Firth into the Orkney Archipelago.

It’s a short drive to the famous Italian Chapel where you stop for a visit before continuing to the Viking stronghold of Kirkwall, Capital of Orkney. Here you can visit Kirkwall's magnificent Viking Cathedral and enjoy its historic winding streets in the evening.

  • Go to a site as ancient as the pyramids, Skara Brae
  • See the wild ocean clash with redstone cliffs

Today is your chance to explore this archipelago’s fertile green pastures, fringed by shores of golden sands and washed by waters of the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.

You visit the 5,000-year-old village of Skara Brae, the mystical prehistoric stone circle at Brodgar and the Druidic standing stones of Stenness.

You stop in Stromness and then travel onto Maeshowe, where in the 12th century the Vikings left one of the largest collections of Norse runic inscriptions.

Then it’s back to Kirkwall for your second night after what is sure to be a memorable day.

  • Take a look at the stunningly located ruins of Ardvreck Castle
  • Stroll around the beautiful harbour town of Ullapool

After a relaxed start, you leave Orkney and sail the Viking waters back to the mainland. From here, you travel the old road right across the very top of Scotland, driving past the stunning Ben Loyal and Ben Hope mountains, following the rocky cliffs and stunning golden sand beaches.

You then visit the far northwest Highlands and the wilderness of the mountains of Assynt before stopping to view the 15th-century ruins of Ardvreck Castle. From here, you travel to Ullapool, situated at the mouth of Loch Broom, a beautiful whitewashed fishing village where you spend two nights.

You will say goodbye to this group here, and will be collected by your new guide and group on the morning of day six.

  • Discover the tranquil Highland way of life
  • Admire the beauty of the Summer Isles on a boat trip

You have a free day in Ullapool before you join your new driver-guide and companions. This picturesque fishing town is surrounded by stunning mountains and is a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts.

If you want to spot seals, dolphins, porpoises, numerous sea birds, and eagles, you can go on a cruise around the Summer Isles.

Alternatively, you can head up Claypool hill for an easy two-hour walk offering wonderful views over Loch Broom.

Ullapool is also a great place to relax and enjoy the Highland pace of life. You can browse the small craft boutiques, try whisky in a pub, or savour top quality seafood. And in the evening, enjoy some live music and mingle with the locals before your next leg of the journey.

  • Travel by ferry through the Summer Isles
  • Explore a lighthouse and the rugged coastline of Lewis

Wake up, enjoy your breakfast, and look out over Loch Broom as it glistens under the morning sky. First on the agenda today is a ferry journey across the sea.

This two and a half-hour boat trip takes you through the Summer Isles to Stornoway, the main town of the Western Isles. But don’t spend your time snoozing and reading as you sail across the ocean; because if you look out to sea, you may spot dolphins and whales.

Once you’ve arrived on Lewis and Harris, you head to the North West coast. Your driver-guide will make the most of what weather you’ve been blessed with and take you through traditional crofting towns and seaside ports. You even get to see the Butt of Lewis; from the lighthouse here there’s nothing but fishes and water between you and America.

You spend the evening in Stornoway; a bustling port town and the home of Scotland’s most delicious black puddings.

  • Step inside a traditional Scottish home at Arnol Blackhouse*
  • Ponder over the mysteries of the Neolithic standing stones of Calanais**

Today, you immerse yourself in the history and landscapes of this wild island.

You first head to Arnol Blackhouse*. Here, you can experience what traditional farming life was like in these remote reaches without getting your hands too dirty.

A little down the road, you visit the stone fort of Dun Carloway. This structure was built before 100AD and has experienced more battles than you’ve had hot dinners. It’s a wonderful location to ponder over the vast swathes of history that have come before you.

You then travel through a landscape littered with crofting villages to one of the most famous sights of the island, the Calanais Stone Circle**. This prehistoric site still mystifies archaeologists today.

The rest of your afternoon is spent in the beautiful beaches and mountains of the western side of Lewis.

You head back to Stornoway in the late afternoon.

*Please note that Arnol Blackhouse will be closed between Monday 23rd September and Friday 11th October inclusive, due to repairs. If your tour departs between 18th September and 4th October, the visitor centre with shop and exhibition will remain open along with the white house, but unforunately a full visit into the Blackhouse will not be available. We apologise for the inconvenience.

**The Calanais stones will be closed from 26 October 2024. This will affect tours departing between 25-29 Oct 2024. We apologise for any inconvenience.

  • Admire the landscapes that inspired Harris Tweed
  • Cast your eyes upon the slender, blonde curves of Luskentyre beach

It’s time for something a little more dramatic. It’s time to enter the region of Harris.

Harris boasts the highest mountains in the Outer Hebrides and one of the most beautiful white-sandy beaches in Britain, Luskentyre.

The area is also famous for Harris Tweed and myths that are as strange as they are poignant.

After a morning of exploring the dramatic landscapes, you stop for lunch. Depending on the weather, we may even go for a picnic on the beach – so don’t forget to pack your sunglasses.

Your adventure continues on a ferry over the sea to Portree, the largest town in Skye and your base for the next two evenings.

  • Set your sights on Scotland’s most dramatic landscapes on the Isle of Skye
  • Snap a famous photo of Portree’s colourful harbour front

Every horizon in Skye conceals something astoundingly beautiful.

So today, your driver-guide makes the most out of your time on this marvel-studded landscape.

You may travel to the Quiraing mountain pass and enjoy a spectacular walk, venture to Kilt Rock and see a gigantic waterfall, or take a boat trip to the lesser-known Loch Coruisk.

After you’ve enjoyed the sights of Skye, you have your final evening in Portree. There are plenty of fabulous seafood restaurants to celebrate a fine day of exploring.

  • Learn how Eilean Donan Castle survived Viking invasions and 343 barrels of gunpowder
  • Discover how Glencoe earned its name, ‘the Weeping Glen’

Don’t be too sad that your trip is ending today, because there are a lot of amazing things to check out on the way back to Edinburgh.

Once you’ve crossed the Skye Bridge, you get a chance to see Eilean Donan Castle. This classic combination of a sturdy-stone fortification perched upon a loch is about as Scottish a view as you can get. Just ensure you’ve got some room left on your camera to take photos.

You then travel under Britain’s tallest mountain, Ben Nevis. The peak of this mountain is likely to be shrouded high in the clouds.

Your driver-guide may become a little emotional as you move through the valley of Glencoe. This marvellously mountainous area was the site of one of the most tragic massacres in Scottish history. The story is as unforgettable as the landscape.

The hilly views become flatter as you enter the Lowlands and travel to Edinburgh.

You arrive in the early evening.

Is there parking close to the departure point?

We don't recommend bringing your car into the centre of our departure cities. It can be hard to find parking, and there are excellent public transportation services.

How much time do I get off the bus?

We want you to enjoy Britain and Ireland. And we believe the best way to do this is to get you off the mini-coach and out exploring. So, we give you plenty of time to take photos, go walking, and explore ancient ruins.

hebrides tours from edinburgh

Day One - Edinburgh - Glen Coe - Loch Ness

We leave Edinburgh behind and travel to Stirling where we make a photo-stop at mighty Stirling Castle . Enjoy the panorama which includes the Wallace Monument  and the impressive Ochil Hills as a backdrop. From Stirling we make our way towards Doune, famed for its own castle  (of Monty Python’s Holy Grail fame), then onwards to Callander. Shortly the Lowlands of Scotland give way to the spectacular scenery of the Highlands .

Our scenic drive takes us along the beautiful banks of Loch Lubnaig then on through "bonnie” Strathyre towards Glen Ogle and Glen Dochart. After climbing the "Black Mount” we reach vast wilderness of Rannoch Moor which stretches out ahead of us.

The sad story of Glen Coe is retold as we stop to view the imposing, yet sinister beauty of Scotland’s most famous glen. After leaving Fort William look out for mighty Ben Nevis, Britain’s tallest mountain before we experience the majestic grandeur of the Great Glen. As we drive through this spectacular scenery there are stories to be told of clan battles, folklore and myths that have been handed down through the generations.

Our home for tonight is in Fort Augustus, situated on the banks of mysterious Loch Ness .

Overnight Fort Augustus

Day Two - Loch Ness – Inverewe Gardens - Stornoway, Isle of Lewis (2 nights)

After breakfast we drive along the banks of enigmatic Loch Ness . As we do keep a close watch just in case 'you know who' makes an appearance! After a brief panoramic tour of Inverness , the Capital of the Highlands, we enjoy grandstand views over the  Moray Firth  as we travel over the Kessock Bridge. After crossing the Black Isle we shall make our way through the rugged landscape of the western Highlands.

Try and spot the salmon leaping as we enjoy a walk along the Black Water to view the Rogie Falls then it’s a short drive to our next treat, lush Inverewe Gardens *. In stark contrast to the remote surroundings a wide variety of exotic plants and shrubs survive here, thanks to the efforts of the Gulf Stream. We’ll make a stop to visit Corrieshalloch Gorge  to see the dramatic Falls of Measach dropping some 150 feet into the ravine below. The fishing port of Ullapool sits on Loch Broom and is where we board our ferry for the crossing of The Minch to reach Stornoway , on the Isle of Lewis. The sailing will take 2 hours 45 minutes and our cruise-ferry boasts extensive lounge and dining facilities.

On arrival in Stornoway it is a short drive to our accommodation for the next two nights. Overnight: Stornoway

Day Three - Exploring Lewis and Harris

Together Harris and Lewis make Scotland’s largest island. These islands have been inhabited for over 6,000 years and there is a real sense of history as we will discover as we spend today discovering Lewis. Our first visit of the day is to the fascinating Arnol Blackhouse Museum*. A traditional blackhouse was a combination of home, barn and stackyard and this example will give you real insight into how life was lived on these islands in times gone by. The weaving of Tweed cloth  has, traditionally, been an important home-based industry for islanders so when we visit a local weaver, on our next visit, there will be an opportunity to see the fabric being hand woven in the time-honoured fashion – a truly fascinating process. The astonishing Callanish Standing Stones   is our next visit. Archaeologists believe that these 15 foot (5 m) stones were placed here by Neolithic people sometime between 3,000 and 1,000 BC and the site is rated second in importance only to Stonehenge. A short distance away is the impressive Dun Carloway Broch , an Iron Age stone fort known to have been built more than 2,000 years ago. This is one of the best preserved fortified towers in Scotland and it’s beautifully located with wonderful views over Loch Carloway and the sea beyond. Luskentyre Beach  which appears never-ending is our next stop of the day so you can enjoy some beach combing. Look out for the machairs which sit behind the beach. These green grassy plains are covered in a mass of wild flowers in the summer. The Atlantic coast leads us to the small community of Rodel and our last visit of the day to 16 th Century St Clements Church. There’s time to stroll around the pretty harbour before we return to our accommodation in Stornoway .

Overnight Stornoway

Day Four - Stornoway - Butt of Lewis - Inverness

After breakfast we will make our way to the Butt of Lewis  where a lighthouse stands warning passing ships of the nearby rocks. This is the most northerly point of the Outer Hebrides. Due west from here is nothing but the North Atlantic until you reach Newfoundland, Canada! We return to Stornoway for some free time so can explore this bustling port before our island interlude comes to an end and we catch the ferry back to the mainland. Overnight: Inverness

Day Five - Inverness to Edinburgh

There’s time to explore Inverness , the Capital of the Highlands before travelling the short distance to visit tragic Culloden Moor *. It was here that the Jacobite army of Bonnie Prince Charlie was routed by Government troops in a bloody battle in 1746.

The Cairngorm National Park is Britain’s largest and contains five of Scotland’s six highest peaks. The park provides stunning backdrop to our travels through the Spey Valley then we descend through the Drumochter Pass to reach the pleasant Victorian tourist town of Pitlochry where we will stop for refreshments.

The dramatic scenery of Highland Perthshire gives way to rolling farmland as we reach the 'Fair City' of Perth then we join the motorway for our journey through the ancient Kingdom of Fife. The final part of our drive offers wonderful views of the Forth Rail Bridge as we make our way into Edinburgh.

Hebrides Tours

Island hopping on Scotland's West Coast

A Hebrides Tour is an island hopping trip Scottish style! It allows you to explore Scotland's Western Isles at your own pace, a chance to discover world class beaches, the freshest seafood and perhaps meet some of the local marine life. These islands are as rich in history as they are in the variety of landscapes, from the peaks of the Cuillin Mountains on Skye to the flat windswept beaches of Tiree, the Vikings and the Celts have shaped the culture of the Hebridean archipelago. If you enjoy unspoilt places with a real 'edge of the world' feel you will love a Hebrides Tour.

The Hebrides islands are split into two geographical groups; the Outer Hebrides and the Inner Hebrides. The Outer Hebrides, also known as the Western Isles, or Na h-Innse Gall in gaelic - the indigenous language of this archipelago, principally consist of Vatersay, Barra, Eriskay, South Uist, Benbecula, North Uist, Berneray, Harris and Lewis, plus hundreds of other small islands and skerries, most of which are uninhabited. The second group, the Inner Hebrides are split into two sub groups; North & South. The Northern Hebrides are principally made up of Skye, Raasay and the Small Isles, a mini archipelago with an archipelago which includes Eigg, Muck, Rúm and Canna, where (non-natives')cars are forbidden traffic so it's walking tours only here!  Lastly, the Southern Hebrides are primarily made up of  Mull, Iona, Lismore, Tiree, Coll, Islay, Jura, Colonsay and Gigha. Each group of islands has a very different feel to the others and each isle has its own distinct character so island hopping in the West Highlands never feels repetitive.

There are so many islands that there are endless permutations of itinerary options. A sample grand tour, which would take most of the main islands from the Southern Hebrides to the Outer Hebrides and on to the Northern Hebrides, would look something like this:

Glasgow/Edinburgh >> Kennacraig >> Islay >>Jura >> Islay >> Colonsay >> Oban >> Mull >> Iona >> Mull >> Kilchoan >> Mallaig >> South Uist >> Eriskay >> Barra >> Eriskay >> South Uist >> Benbecula >> North Uist >> Berneray >> Harris/Lewis >> Skye >> Raasay >> Glasgow/Edinburgh

A trip of this length would require 7 to 14 days, or 10 - 21 days if including Orkney and/or Shetland in the Northern Isles. My guided island hopping tours are conducted in a relaxed no-rush manner, which is perfect because the pace of life in the Hebrides and Northern Isles is much slower than the mainland and this makes them the perfect place for that 'getaway from it all' type of vacation.

For those looking for a unique island whisky tour it would be easy to incorporate visits to Islay, Scotland's 'whisky island', Jura, Mull, Skye and Orkney, visiting distilleries such as Laphroaig, Jura, Tobermory, Talisker, Highland Park, with the occasional Highland distillery, such as Oban, thrown in for good measure, to create a combined Highlands and islands whisky tour.

Of course I can tailor make an island tour for you from anything from one day (eg. Arran or Isle of Bute day trip), two/three days (eg. Islay/Jura, Mull, Skye) or a multi-day tour (eg. Outer Hebrides, Orkney and Shetland) or as many island as you can fit into two or three weeks - my record, so far, in one trip is 17 islands!
