TripSavvy / Shraddha Gosavi

According to this walking tour, Mumbai's heart lies not in its monuments but in its markets. You'll be expertly guided through the vibrant but chaotic bazaars of Kalbadevi and Bhuleshwar, where it's otherwise easy to get lost. The area is a fascinating mix of shops, stalls, noise and activity, mosques, temples , and tranquility. Lou Jones/Getty Images

Mumbai's iconic dabbawalas are an essential part of the city's functionality. These men carry and deliver about 200,000 dabbas (tiffins/lunch boxes) to the city's office workers every day. The concept was started to meet the needs of British rulers. However, it's continued on to cater to Indian businessmen who can't get home for lunch. This tour starts with an informative talk by the Chief of the Dabbawala Association. After this, you'll be involved in sorting and delivering the tiffins with the dabbawalas .

  • Cost: Depends on the number of people.

Sharell Cook

Communities include the Kolis (fisher folk), Parsis, Christians, Jews, Hindus, Muslims, Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists. That's quite a mix! Worli Fishing Village

Soltan Frédéric/Getty Images

Get a peek into the daily lives and rituals of the koli fishing community, Mumbai's original inhabitants, on this walking tour. The fishing village is located on what was one of Mumbai's seven islands. It was recently given a colorful makeover, when a group of young city residents painted its buildings as part of an ongoing slum beautification project. Another significant but little-known attraction there is the remains of historical Worli fort.

Bandra, from Village to Metro

Frédéric Soltan / Contributor/Getty Images

One of Mumbai's cool neighborhoods and "Queen of the Suburbs", Bandra was originally a Portuguese settlement that continued to exist after the British gained possession of the Bombay islands further south. The neighborhood's liberal attitudes have made it a firm favorite with the city's hipsters and celebrities. Portuguese-style heritage bungalows, modern street art, historical churches, fort remains, and groovy cafes are some of the eclectic attractions .

  • Duration: Four hours, daily. Recommended starting times are 9 a.m. or 2 p.m.
  • Cost: Depends on the number of people. Expect to pay 3,000 rupees for a solo tour.

Cultural and Heritage Tour of Vasai

Have a day to spare and want to go somewhere offbeat on the outskirts of Mumbai? Take this tour of Vasai! Most likely, you haven't head of Vasai. It's hard to believe but it was a headquarters of Portuguese rule and a thriving fort city in the 16th and 17th centuries, when Mumbai was merely a string undeveloped islands. These days, it remains delightfully cutoff from the city's urban sprawl and feels more like Goa. Read more about the Cultural and Heritage Tour of Vasai .

  • Tour Operator: Amaze Tours.
  • Duration: Full day, 10 hours.
  • Cost: 3,500 rupees per person.

Asia Pacific Airlines Add 26.4 Million Passengers In 1Q 2024

  • Asia-Pacific airlines seeing strong recovery with 88% of pre-pandemic passenger numbers
  • March 2024 saw 37.5% increase in international passengers, indicating robust growth
  • Air cargo demand up 15.3% due to manufacturing uptick, showing region's resilience

The full impacts of open borders and no travel restrictions throughout Asia-Pacific are now flowing through to airline passenger numbers, which is moving the region's international traffic closer to full recovery from the pandemic. The region's recovery has been characterized by disciplined capacity management and careful route expansion, leading to profitable returns and high passenger load factors.

There is still a way to go to reach 100%

Today, the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) released its March 2024 Traffic Results, which showed the region's airlines carried 28.2 million international passengers, a 37.5% increase from the 20.5 million recorded in March last year. That strong gain demonstrates the continuation of robust growth in both international air passenger and air cargo demand, mirroring the growing expansion in global economic activity.

In the first three months of this year (1Q24), Asia-Pacific airlines carried 82.4 million passengers, which is 88% of the 93.5 million they carried in the first quarter of pre-pandemic 2019. Similarly, this year's March international passenger traffic of 28.2 million is 89% of the 31.7 million transported in March 2019.

The Push From Asia Pacific Airports To Lower Carbon Emissions

It should be noted that these figures from AAPA are for international travel and do not include domestic air travel, which in Asia-Pacific has been recovering much faster without internal travel restrictions. AAPA Director General Subhas Menon commented:

"March saw another healthy expansion in both passenger and cargo markets, culminating in a strong first-quarter performance for 2024. For the three-month period, Asian airlines registered a 47% year-on-year increase in the number of passengers carried, fuelled by a surge in demand for both leisure and business travel."

Demand for air cargo has been on a rollercoaster ride since the pandemic grounded commercial passenger aviation, taking out vast amounts of belly-hold cargo capacity. Airlines and entrepreneurs lined up to book slots for converting aging passenger aircraft into dedicated cargo planes , but when restrictions faded, demand patterns changed, and cargo loads dropped.

IndiGo Could Operate Cargo Flights To China By February End

In March, manufacturing activity increased, driving a corresponding rise in trade and export activity in Asia-Pacific, in part propelled by strength in the e-commerce sector. This led to a 15.3% year-on-year increase in international air cargo demand (freight tonne kilometers) while a 16.2% increase in freight capacity (available freight tonne kilometers) edged the load factor down by 0.5 percentage points to 62.7%.

The region's airlines are bouncing back

AAPA has 14 members: Air Astana, Air India, All Nippon Airways, Cathay Pacific, China Airlines, EVA Air, Garuda Indonesia, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Philippine Airlines, Royal Brunei, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways and Vietnam Airlines. However, it collects data from 40 Asia-Pacific-based carriers of all shapes and sizes from across the region, stretching as far afield as Australia's Qantas and Air New Zealand.

As airlines release their quarterly or full-year results, CEOs often share the view that 2024 will not produce as good a result as 2023, with one describing last year as being "as good as it gets for an airline." Airlines are facing turbulence from all directions, marked by international conflicts, extreme weather events and supply chain issues that are increasing costs and causing travel disruptions.

Despite that, Menon concludes that the Asia-Pacific airline industry is growing steadily and is steadfastly focused on improving air connectivity and the travel experience of its customers. The next quarter will move the needle closer to full recovery, which is now expected to be late in 2024, barring any new or unforeseen external shocks.

Are you happy with the Asia-Pacific airlines? Let us know in the comments.

Luxury Travel to Mumbai

Travel+Leisure World's Best Awards 2023 logo in white

The capital of Maharashtra and India ’s economic powerhouse, Mumbai is a huge metropolis home to over 22 million people. A melting pot of cultures, the affectionately named City of Dreams envelops all who come in a cloud of colour and sound, its energy undeniably contagious. Mumbaikars have a real love for life, which they live at quite a pace, and the best way to enjoy this city is to simply join them.

The city previously known as Bombay become the principle gateway to the Indian Subcontinent and it has transformed from a collection of fishing islands on the shores of the Arabian Sea to one of the world’s biggest urban sprawls.

Mumbai is a city of contrasts. It is at once home to some of the country’s most expensive real estate and some of Asia’s biggest slums. Its high-rise buildings and glitzy shopping malls share pavement space with British-style architecture and bustling street markets. Weaving its way through this fascinating tapestry are streets that heave with cars, pedestrians, rickshaws and bikes. What may seem chaotic to the untrained eye is in fact a finely-tuned system that enables its inhabitants, who always have somewhere to go, to get from A to B.

There is so much to see and do, from marvelling at iconic structures such as the Gateway of India and Chhatrapati Shivaji terminus to exploring its museums, temples, mosques and churches. Admire the city’s skyline with a stroll along coastal Marine Drive and get swept up in the glamorous world of Bollywood. If you need to escape the hustle and bustle, Sanjay Gandhi National Park is a 103sqkm oasis of green on the northern fringes of the city, home to numerous species of birds, butterflies and plants.

Much of Mumbai’s appeal lies in its diversity. Keep your ears open to the hundreds of different dialects, let your taste buds savour the different regional cuisines and allow yourself to get swept up by this hugely vibrant and exciting city.

The best time to visit is between October and March. September and April are considered the shoulder months when it is very hot in the middle of the day but mornings and late afternoons are lovely. From the end of December until the middle of January, mornings and evenings can be foggy and nights cold, but during the day the weather is great for sightseeing.

  • Visit the Gateway of India, Mumbai's most iconic landmark
  • See the dabbawalas in action as they deliver thousands of lunchboxes across the city
  • Learn about India's fight for freedom at the Mani Bhavan Gandhi museum
  • Take an evening stroll along Marine Drive

WHIAANHPI and SmithsonianAPA Unveil Joint Theme for 2024 Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month: ‘Bridging Histories, Shaping Our Future’

The White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders and the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center issue call for intergenerational connection, action, and reflection.

The White House and WHIAANHPI will convene over 1,000 AA and NHPI leaders on May 13 for a landmark celebration at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium.

Today, the White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (WHIAANHPI) and the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center are proud to present our joint 2024 theme for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AA and NHPI) Heritage Month: “Bridging Histories, Shaping Our Future.”

Since the late 1970s, our country has recognized the invaluable contributions of AA and NHPI communities each May. For more than a decade, the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center and WHIAANHPI have collaborated to identify a national theme for AA and NHPI Heritage Month in consultation with the White House and community partners. Previous themes such as "I Am Beyond" (2014) and "Visible Together" (2023) have been warmly embraced, both by federal agencies and community-serving organizations, and have served as catalysts for meaningful dialogue around AA and NHPI identity.

The 2024 theme is an homage to our ancestors and invites all Americans to delve into the legacies, triumphs, and challenges that have shaped AA and NHPI communities. It embodies the spirit of our collective journey – one rooted in resilience and hope – and encourages us to forge intergenerational connections to honor our past and pave a durable path forward.

The White House and WHIAANHPI will use this theme to foster discussions during our May activities, including a landmark celebration on May 13, 2024, at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, DC. This historic convening, uniting over 1,000 AA and NHPI leaders spanning five presidential administrations, will mark the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the White House Initiative and the President's Advisory Commission on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders during the Clinton Administration. Sign up to receive the livestream link here .

About Our 2024 Theme: “Bridging Histories, Shaping Our Future”

As the Nation observes Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AA and NHPI) Heritage Month in May, we reflect on our rich heritage and storied past. From Indigenous Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities whose wisdom and knowledge helped to shape this country and continue to guide us today, to the immigrants and refugees who came to our shores in search of better opportunities, to the trailblazers who paved the way for progress across generations – our communities’ journey has been one of tragedy and triumph, adversity, and resilience.

Knowing our histories gives us power. Throughout the month, let us embrace the interconnectedness of our stories and honor the visionaries who came before us. Let us commit to spotlighting the myriad ways diverse AA and NHPI communities have enriched every facet of American life. And let us endeavor to build bridges across generations, experiences, and cultures to forge a future where all of us can thrive.

The White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (WHIAANHPI), established by President Joe Biden through Executive Order 14031, is charged with coordinating a whole-of-government agenda to advance equity, justice, and opportunity for AA and NHPI communities. Learn more at hhs.gov/whiaanhpi.

The Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center (APAC), established in 1997, strives to ensure the comprehensive representation and inclusion of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders in the Smithsonian’s collections, research, exhibitions, and programs. Through education initiatives, publications, and public programs, APAC provides new avenues to document, celebrate, and share the rich and diverse history, art, and culture of AA and NHPI communities.
