GoCar – Experience San Diego Tour

Tour-takers regularly describe GoCar as a fun and exciting way to see the sights. Each yellow GoCar is equipped with a GPS system and prerecorded narration to provide information about the sights. Because you drive the car yourself, you can park the car at any point to explore on foot. The route for the four-hour Experience San Diego outing takes you by Seaport Village, Petco Park, the San Diego Zoo and Old Town, among other locations. Each car holds two people and you must be at least 21 years old to rent the vehicle. Prices start at $202 per GoCar. Tours run daily and depart from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the hour. GoCar also operates shorter, two-hour tours of different San Diego neighborhoods.

Everyday California – La Jolla Sea Caves Kayak Tour

Enjoy a rare opportunity to explore sea caves off San Diego's coast in the area of La Jolla . Everyday California takes kayakers multiple times daily to see the seven sea caves and paddle through La Jolla Cove . Along the way, you'll likely spot sea lions on the nearby rocks and bright orange Garibaldi fish swimming below your kayak. Reviewers describe the tour as beautiful and educational, though some warn that some groups cannot go inside the caves due to unsafe water conditions. Tours last 90 minutes and are limited to 10 kayakers. Prices vary depending on the day and time you book, though you can expect to pay around $45 to $75 for a single kayak and about $85 to $105 for a double. Participants must be at least 5 years old to join the tour. Everyday California also offers seasonal whale-watching kayak tours and snorkeling tours.

Speed Boat Adventures – Speed Boat Adventure Tour

Hop in a speedboat and breeze by all the attractions along San Diego Bay, from the USS Midway Museum to Seaport Village. Limited to just three people, the narrated tour takes visitors on a 1 1/2-hour trip for a look at wildlife, the Coronado Bridge, the downtown skyline and the historic ships of the Maritime Museum . Travelers rave about their guides and say the trip is a great way to see the city. Tickets cost approximately $205 for three passengers; there are less expensive options for double or single riders. Tours leave several times throughout the day. The company does not recommend the trip for children 4 and younger. Speed Boat Adventures also offers a VIP experience where you can drive your own speedboat.

Adventure R.I.B. Rides – Whale & Dolphin Watching

Experience the majesty of whales in the wild with Adventure R.I.B. Rides. During the three-hour excursion, you may spot gray, minke, fin or humpback whales, depending on the season. Plus, dolphin pods are known to swim alongside the boats. Along the way, captains – who are also marine naturalists – provide information about the surrounding sea life. The tour, which accommodates up to 12 passengers, departs twice daily at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tickets start at $98 per person. Children must be at least 4 years old to join the tour. Reviewers describe the tour as awesome. They also appreciate the small boat for its ability to travel quickly to whale sightings and its lack of large crowds. Adventure R.I.B. Rides also offers private whale-watching excursions and tours of the Coronado Islands in Mexico.

Hop aboard Seal Tours' semiaquatic vessel to see San Diego's wildlife.

San Diego Seal Tours

This tour lets visitors experience the city both on land and on water by traveling in a boat with wheels. The 90-minute trip takes participants past key San Diego sights, such as the USS Midway, Point Loma and Seaport Village. Once you glide into the San Diego Bay, you'll see the local sea lions and seals. Trips spend about 30 minutes on land and 60 minutes in the water. Tours, narrated by live guides, depart multiple times daily. Ticket prices start at $42 for adults, $25 for children ages 4 to 12 and $10 for children 3 and younger. Reviewers speak highly of the guides and describe the tour as delightful and fun. The company offers two departure locations: the Embarcadero and Seaport Village.

Nation Tours – Historic Gaslamp Quarter and Embarcadero Coast Segway Tour

Hop on a Segway and explore the city sights as you coast through the Gaslamp Quarter, the Embarcadero and waterfront areas, learning interesting facts and history along the way. You'll see the Martin Luther King Jr. Promenade, Broadway Pier, Petco Park and more. Participants describe the tour as scenic and the guides as friendly and informative. Tours begin daily at 9 a.m. and last two hours. Tickets cost about $80 per person. When you're ready for more, Nation Tours also offers an evening Segway tour of downtown.

Sail Stars & Stripes USA-11 – Public Sail

Tourgoers relish the opportunity to help sail this 78-foot yacht, which competed in the 1992 America's Cup held in San Diego. Aboard the yacht, passengers can help raise and trim the sails or even try steering the boat during the three-hour adventure. What's more, you'll cruise through the bay at twice the speed of the average sailboat. Public sails run at 1 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Fees include free photos and video for passengers as well as water and soda. Tickets start at $125 for adults and $75 for children ages 5 to 18. Visitors can also book private charters or racing tours with the company.

City Cruises by Hornblower Cruises & Events – Whale & Dolphin Watching Adventure

Spot magnificent minke whales, fin whales and a variety of dolphins on this cruise with Hornblower. Depending on the season, you may also see gray whales or blue whales. Onboard naturalists from the San Diego Natural History Museum narrate the journey as you cruise through the open ocean. Plus, if you don't see a whale during your roughly four-hour excursion, you'll receive a pass to take another tour. Yachts have a snack and beverage bar on board. Cruises run in the winter, spring and summer Friday through Monday at 9 a.m. Tickets start at $59 for adults and $27.50 for children ages 4 to 12; children 3 and younger ride for free. Most tourgoers say they are able to spot at least one whale and greatly enjoy the experience. However, others express disappointment with the large number of passengers on board. Hornblower also offers dining cruises and harbor cruises, among other options.

San Diego Sailing Tours – Signature Daytime Sailing Tour

Discover San Diego Bay on a luxury yacht with San Diego Sailing Tours. Departing from Harbor Island, the two-hour tour takes visitors past the downtown skyline, Coronado Island and Point Loma, while the captain shares history and sailing information. Ticket prices start at $89 per person, though you'll pay a bit more for trips departing on the weekends. Tours depart at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. daily. Reviewers offer high praise for the captains and say the tour is a relaxing experience. San Diego Sailing Tours sails private charters and charters its boats for families and other parties.

Old Town Trolley Tours

For a hop-on, hop-off option in San Diego, consider Old Town Trolley Tours. The 25-mile loop stops at 11 key locations, including Balboa Park, where tourgoers can get on and off at their leisure for further exploration. A live conductor narrates each tour aboard the iconic green and orange trolleys. Reviewers say the tour is a good value and that guides are informative, though sometimes difficult to understand. One-day tickets, which cost approximately $45 for adults and $25 for children ages 4 to 12, also include coupons to area attractions. Trolleys run Wednesdays to Mondays starting at 9 or 9:30 a.m.; the time of the last trip varies by season. The company also offers ghost tours and an evening tour to see the city lights.

San Diego Road Trips to Take in Your Lifetime

woman giving the peace sign in front of huge insect sculptures, accessible via one of the many San Diego road trips

Coming up with a list of the best San Diego road trips was easy, and that’s not just because I’ve been visiting once a year for the past decade. San Diego is so close to a bunch of interesting places. The more I go, the more I want to explore the area surrounding this gem of a SoCal city.

Being less than an hour from the Mexico border and just a couple hours from Los Angeles, there are plenty of great places to visit for a quick weekend getaway. Whether you’re in the mood to explore land, sea, or wine country, you’ll never run out of things to do in San Diego.

If you’re curious about the best road trips from San Diego, get ready because I’ve come up with a list of fun destinations. They’re organized by distance, each being a six hours or less drive time from SD.

This post has affiliate links, which means I’ll earn a small commission at no cost to you if you click on them and make a purchase. This is a small way I earn money to support this site. If links aren’t showing up for you , turn off your ad blocking software. Thank you for your support!

San Diego Road Trips

Save this list to Pinterest for later , as I’ll update it as I discover more road trips in San Diego!

travel time: ~40 minutes | get directions | best for: vineyards & art scene

Lets ease into this list of San Diego road trips. Escondido is a short drive north of San Diego, so it’s perfect for a quick day trip. It has the same gorgeous weather as SD but with even more picturesque mountain views and nature trails. It’s also home to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park , the California Center for the Arts , and a really cool sculpture garden in Kit Carson Park.

Downtown has plenty of craft breweries, restaurants, museums, and tasting rooms. If you have time, I suggest heading to the outskirts to check out the wineries in the Ramona Valley AVA and Highland Valley. Two of my favorites are Mia Marie Vineyards and Espinosa Vineyards .

Oceanside / Carlsbad

travel time: ~40- 50 minutes | Oceanside ( get directions ) or Carlsbad ( get directions ) | best for: beaches

Oceanside and Carlsbad are two side-by-side beach towns north of SD. They both have a quaint beachy vibe with restaurants, bars, and shops offering epic coastline views. Oceanside Pier is known for being bustling with more to do, whereas Carlsbad is quieter and has more family-friendly activities, like the Carlsbad Ranch flower fields .

woman walking on a San Diego beach

When you go to Oceanside, check out Harbor Beach for its volleyball courts and fire pits. Carlsbad is known for having a great surf scene, especially at Robert Frazee Beach . Families tend to like Ponto Beach for its large stretch of sand and gentle waves.

Both areas have some great restaurants. If you want fine dining, head to Carlsbad’s 1-Michelin star Jeune et Jolie or their casual sister bar, Campfire . In Oceanside, head to southeast Asian Dija Mara or Wrench and Rodent for creative takes on sushi.

Temecula

travel time: ~1 hour 40 minutes | get directions | best for: wine country

Temecula is Southern Cali’s most well-known wine region and was even voted a “Top 10 Wine Destination” by Wine Enthusiast in 2019. There are over 50 wineries ranging from small boutique spots to large mountainside estates.

Here are some of my favorite wineries to visit:

  • Akash Winery – Stunning father-son winery with a modern tasting room
  • Palumbo Family Vineyards – Intimate tasting room with sustainable wines
  • Vindemia Winery – Great wine and grounds that transport you to Europe
  • Doffo Wines – Funky motorcycle-themed winery with bold reds

Aside from wine tasting, there are tons of activities to keep you busy. Stroll through historic Old Town and check out the specialty shops, outdoor art, and historic buildings. Don’t miss The Painted Garden , a fairytale of a garden store with great plants and garden accessories.

If you want to literally park yourself in the middle of a winery, this is where you do it. The rooms are immaculate, and each offers a view of the estate. You’ll also be within 10-15 minutes walking distance from a bunch of other wineries.

Anza Borrego Desert

travel time: ~2 hours | get directions | best for: hiking

This may be one of my most exciting discoveries for this list of San Diego road trips. The Anza Borrego Desert is the largest state park in California stretching over 500 miles of dirt roads and wilderness. It’s famous for wildflower blooms, slotted canyons, and natural wildlife. Almost all of the park is free to hike or camp except for a few of the more popular spots, which have a $5-10 day fee.

woman taking in the views on a hike that is the perfect San Diego weekend getaway

If you’re looking for a hike, Palm Canyon Loop is a fun one. It’s about 3 miles round trip and takes you to a dense forest of palm trees and stream perfect for a dip on a hot day.

Another option is The Slot , which is high on my list to visit. It’s an about 2-mile hike that takes you to a slot canyon.

palm trees on a hike near San Diego

Want to experience something funky? Don’t miss Galleta Meadows . It’s a large animal sculpture exhibit randomly placed in a field on the side of the road. It gets windy, so be prepared for some epic photos with your hair blowing everywhere!

huge scorpion sculpture in the desert

When you visit, check out the Salton Sea just outside the park. It’s the largest lake in California and a known birder destination.

East of the Salton Sea is a famous outdoor art installation, Salvation Mountain . It features a vibrant-colored mountain decorated with Christian-themed artwork.

  • Full-Day Private Expedition to Anza Borrego State Park
  • San Andreas Fault Offroad Tour
  • Earthquake Canyon Express Downhill Bike Experience

The park is big so you may travel up to 3 hours outside of SD. Therefore you may want to turn this San Diego road trip into a multi-day excursion. Here are some options of where to rest your head for the night.

Mountain View Home

link to book | Borrego Springs, CA | price: ~$200/night | bedrooms: 2 | bathrooms: 2 | fits: 5 people | dog friendly | hot tub

inside a vacation rental near SD

If you’re not in the mood for camping, plenty of accommodations are just outside the park. This mountain view home is 10 miles outside Anza Borrego State Park and offers stunning views with a golf course and community pool.

outdoor pool area of a California rental home

This gorgeous house is made of rammed earth and features tons of outdoor space with plenty of overhangs, a private pool, and an in-ground spa. There’s also a full kitchen and even a separate game room.

Palm Springs

travel time: ~2 hours 15 minutes | get directions | best for: dining, architecture & art scene

Road-tripping from SD to Palm Springs is a no-brainer. I mean, what’s not to love about Palm Springs? With gorgeous weather, tons of restaurants, bars, architecture, specialty shops, hiking trails, and a curated art scene, you could easily spend an entire week exploring the area.

retro mid century modern home with a bright door

If you’re up for a hike, grab bagel sandwiches from Townie Bagels and then check out Andreas Canyon to explore a massive grove of palm trees. Or give Tahquitz Canyon a try, which leads you to a 60-foot waterfall.

woman standing in front of a famous mid century modern home in Palm Springs, a must do on your day trip to Joshua Tree

Afterwards, rest your feet with a self-guided driving tour to explore the stunning mid century modern architecture. Whimsy Soul has a good self-guided door tour you can follow. Or if you’re visiting February or October-May, you can take a tour with Modernist Week or go to their large festival event in February.

When you’re hungry, check out some of my favorite spots like El Jefe for tacos, Rooster & the Pig for Vietnamese, or Bar Cecil for American classics.

artichokes from Bar Cecil in Palm Springs

Lastly, no trip to Palm Springs would be complete without a little shopping. If you’re visiting on a Thursday, downtown Palm Springs main shopping street becomes pedestrian only to host 180+ vendors at Villagefest .

But shopping any other day of the week is also a must. Simply walk down S Palm Canyon Drive and pop into shops of interest, stopping for a world-famous date shake for a treat when you need to cool down.

  • Modern Architecture & More Bike Tour
  • Legends & Icons of Palm Springs Tour
  • Palm Springs Indian Canyon Bike Tour

There are some seriously dope places to stay in Palm Springs because the Hollywood elite used to come here to escape by the pool. Here are some options to consider for your trip.

This modern Palm Springs hotel is just 16 minutes from the Palm Springs Art Museum and offers a stunning view. The hotel is at the base of the San Jacintos, in the heart of downtown Palm Springs.

A Place in the Sun Hotel

link to book | Palm Springs, CA ( get directions ) | price: ~$215/night | fits: varies | dog friendly | hot tub

pool area in Palm Springs, one of the best road trips from San Diego

I’ll never turn down an adults-only hotel, especially in a nightlife-centric town like Palm Springs. This modern boutique hotel has a beautiful backdrop of the mountains and all the amenities you could think of. Yes, even a mini golf course.

Joshua Tree National Park

travel time: ~2 hours 45 minutes | get directions | best for: hiking

Joshua Tree National Park is a popular San Diego road trip add-on when visiting Palm Springs since it’s about 50 minutes away. The park is named for the gnarly and twisted trees that surround it. It has many hiking and camping options, such as the aptly named Skull Rock or the easily accessible Hidden Valley viewpoint.

woman walking in cactus garden at sunrise, a must do on a Joshua Tree day trip

I have a whole guide to spending the day in Joshua Tree National Park . It gets really hot there from May – October, so I recommend starting early to beat the heat and crowds. One of the most magical experiences is seeing sunrise at the Cholla Cactus Garden. Starting that early makes it so you can hit up most of the main attractions by lunch!

woman sitting on a ledge overlooking a viewpoint

Speaking of lunch, head to La Copine for food after exploring the park. This Yucca Valley restaurant makes excellent takes on comfort food with some healthy and fresh dishes thrown into the mix.

Before you make your way back to SD, stop by Pioneertown. It’s a semi-abandoned Old Western movie set/fully functioning town. While you’re there, grab a beer at the Pioneertown staple, Pappy and Harriet’s .

Pioneertown, a must visit on your day trip to Joshua Tree

  • Joshua Tree National Park Scenic Tour
  • Half-Day Guided Hike in JTNP
  • 4-Hour Rock Climbing Trip in JTNP

Since Joshua Tree National Park is about an hour from Palm Springs, if you want to beat the heat and get there for sunrise it’s best to stay near the park entrance. Here are some options.

This modern-aesthetic home is just 5 minutes from the park and features giant 30-foot sliding glass doors, giving you the ultimate view of the Joshua Tree sunset from the comfort of your living room.

Santa Catalina Island

travel time: ~3 ½ hours | get directions | best for: beaches & scuba diving

I have yet to make it to Santa Catalina Island, but it’s safely on my bucket list. To get there, you have to take an hour-long ferry from Long Beach, San Pedro, or Dana Point, or you can take a helicopter from Long Beach or San Pedro.

The two main towns on the island are Two Harbors and Avalon. Two Harbors is more outdoors-focused, with hiking and scuba diving. Avalon is more low key with relaxing beach vibes. You can visit both in one day since they’re about 1 hour and 20 minutes away from each other, but keep in mind there are no Ubers, so you’ll have to rely on taxis or bus services.

  • Private Guided Golf Cart Tour of Avalon
  • 45-Minute Submarine Tour of Catalina Island
  • 2-Hour Adventure Tour on Catalina Island

While a day trip is technically feasible, you’ll probably want to book at least one night if you visit Santa Catalina Island as one of your San Diego road trips. Here are some cute spots.

Charming Catalina Gem

link to book | Avalon, CA | price: ~$250/night | bedrooms: 2 | bathrooms: 1 | fits : 4 people

Most accommodations will be in Avalon, like this adorable coastal gem. It’s just minutes from the beach and instantly accessible to several trails.

Gorgeous Catalina Island Condo

This condo is a bit on the pricey side, but it comes with a lot of amenities that can be hard to find on the island. For example, there’s a pool, hot tub, fitness center, and playground. You even get your own golf cart. Not to mention you’re steps away from the beach.

Los Angeles

travel time: ~2 hours | get directions | best for: nightlife & nearby theme parks

LA is probably the most quintessential getaway on this list of San Diego road trips. I created a 4-day itinerary for visiting LA since that’s exactly how much time I think it deserves, especially if you’ve never been before. With beautiful beaches and tons of restaurants, it’s a Southern California staple you have to visit at least once.

woman giving a peace sign in front of the famous Venice Beach sign

Start your trip with some sun by visiting Venice Beach. There’s a ton of unique boutique shops and great people watching.

Then spend a day in the Hollywood area to soak up all the magic of entertainment. Don’t miss the other hidden gems in this neighborhood, such as hiking at Griffith Park and Runyon Canyon followed by a visit to the farmers market .

view of Griffith Park and Griffith Observatory

If you’re traveling with kids in tow and have a few days to spare, I suggest heading to Universal Studios or Disneyland. They’ll also get a kick out of the fossils at the La Brea Tar Pit .

  • Full-Day Iconic Sights of LA Tour
  • Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood
  • Hollywood Sightseeing and Celebrity Homes Tour
  • Private Luxurious Tour of Los Angeles

I love staying near the Hollywood or Silver Lake neighborhoods because I find them more centrally located, but stay in Venice if you want a true beach vacation!

Santa Barbara

travel time: ~3 ½ hours | get directions | best for: beaching and wine tasting

I love Santa Barbara. From its scenic mountain and ocean views to the whitewashed buildings and variety of outdoor activities, it’s basically an adult playground. I wrote an itinerary on how to spend 3 days in Santa Barbara , which is almost enough time to fit it all in.

paved bike path along the ocean, a must do on any Santa Barbara itinerary

One spot I mentioned, but didn’t have time to visit is the Yvez Valley. It’s part of the larger Central Coast wine region known for growing pinot noir and Rhône varietals. Most of the vineyards are about a 45-minute drive from Santa Barbara, but you explore dozens of tasting rooms from downtown by following the Urban Wine Trail .

Pro tip: If you’re able to, I highly recommend making your way to Channel Islands National Park while you’re in Santa Barbara. You can get to it via boat with Island Packers or a private tour.

  • Small-Group Santa Barbara Wine Tour
  • Santa Barbara Vineyard Tour by E-Bike
  • Santa Ynez Valley Wine Tour

I love staying right downtown so I can walk to all the Santa Barbara attractions, but I have options if you’d prefer a more secluded escape.

I stayed at Drift the last time I went to Santa Barbara, and I loved the impeccably styled rooms and cozy beds. It’s located in the historic downtown so you’re within walking distance of restaurants and a short drive from the Santa Barbara Zoo .

If you’re craving to see how the other half lives, it doesn’t get more luxurious than staying at the Ritz. With meticulous detail, upscale service, and tons of amenities, it’s definitely on my bucket list.

San Luis Obispo

travel time: ~5 hours | get directions | best for: outdoor activities & beaches

I love San Luis Obispo because it’s a great walking town and full of things to do , like ride the waves at Pismo Beach , walk along the Bob Jones Trail , or take advantage of the many delicious restaurants. So it’d be one of my top choices for San Diego road trips.

exterior of the SLO mission,, one of the best things to do in San Luis Obispo

I didn’t make it to Morro Bay the last time I went, but it’s definitely at the top of my list for next time. It’s a small coastal town known for picturesque haystacks and killer oysters (note: killer as in tasty, not vicious).

Pismo Beach

  • Guided E-Bike Tour of Morro Bay
  • Semi-Private Hop-On Hop-Off Wine Tour
  • 3-Hour Kayaking and Hiking California’s Central Coast

SLO has a cute downtown walking area, so stay close by to be near all the shops and restaurants! However, if you want to stay closer to the coastline, stay near Pismo Beach.

This rural getaway is perfect if you want to get away from the crowds. It has a secluded vibe while still being a short drive from downtown SLO and nearby Avila Beach .

Paso Robles

travel time: ~5 hours | get directions | best for: wine tasting

Paso Robles is another must-visit wine region on the Central Coast, especially if you like heat-loving grapes like cabernet sauvignon and zinfandel. Downtown Paso Robles is small, so it won’t take long to explore and you can focus on visiting wineries.

Paso Robles wine country, one of the best things to do in San Luis Obispo

If I have time between winery visits, I head straight to Tin City , a collection of repurposed industrial buildings with craft breweries, wineries, and restaurants. There’s also a whimsical outdoor light installation called Sensorio in Paso Robles that’s totally unlike anything you’ve ever seen.

This cottage is great if you’re traveling with your fur babies since there’s plenty of room for them to get comfortable while still putting you just a short drive away from several wineries and restaurants. If you need a night in, you can make use of the gas grill and dine under the twinkling patio lights.

This modern bungalow is centered downtown, super close to tons of restaurants, bars, and the city’s central park. In the evenings, you can break out the board games or sip your wine in the backyard and listen to the live music from The Pour House across the park.

Las Vegas

travel time: ~5 hours | get directions | best for: gambling & nightlife

Believe it or not, I’ve never been to Las Vegas, but my partner goes multiple times a year. It’s notorious for rambunctious nightlife, gambling, and entertainment which usually isn’t my scene, but I have always wanted to visit for the food.

According to my partner, Lotus of Siam is the best restaurant. Ester’s Kitchen is another awesome spot just off the strip. For an after-dinner show, he recommends the Penn & Teller magic show. He also said there are a ton of Cirque du Soleil options worth seeing.

If you want to try your hand at gambling but don’t want to break the bank, go to Treasure Island or The Flamingo . Want to class it up? Go to the ARIA or The Wynn . If you’re a serious poker player like my partner, go to The Bellagio , made famous by the movie Ocean’s 11. Bonus: All poker rooms in Vegas are smoke free.

When you’re ready to escape the strip, go to Red Rock Canyon for some hiking. It’s a trek, but you’re also within driving distance of the Grand Canyon if that’s a bucket list adventure for you.

If you’d prefer to keep closer to Vegas, head to Seven Magic Mountains if you want some great photos for the ‘gram. This cool art installation has seven rock columns painted vibrant colors. If you love interactive art exhibits, make sure to check out The Sphere when you get back to the strip.

Here are two options at different price points.

ARIA Resort & CaSino

Aria Hotel, one of the best San Diego road trips

I feel like the “go big or go home” mentality is kind of essential if you’re going to visit Vegas. However, you don’t necessarily have to ball out at a place like The Venetian or The Wynn . ARIA is the perfect balance of swank, but not as expensive as some of the other high-rolling places. It’s where my partner always stays.

HORSESHOE Las Vegas

link to book | Las Vegas, CA ( get directions ) | price: $140+ | fits: varies

The Hoseshoe in Las Vegas

If you’re not looking to spend an arm and a leg to visit the strip, The Horseshoe (previously Bally’s) is an excellent resort at a super approachable price point. You’ll be right in the heart of the strip, but you won’t ever have to leave with the onsite dining, casino, pool, fitness center, and shows.

Phoenix / Scottsdale

travel time: ~5 ½ hours | Phoenix directions & Scottsdale directions | best for: restaurants & hiking

I regularly head south to Arizona during the particularly dreary PNW winters, both because tickets are so cheap and because there’s so much to do. Since I go so often, I devised a solid itinerary for what to do if you only have one day in Phoenix . Lucky for you, this is one of the best San Diego road trips so you’ll be closer and have more time to explore.

a woman laughing with hot air balloons in the background during a weekend trip to Scottsdale

If you’ve never been, Phoenix and Scottsdale are two huge side-by-side cities rich with everything from hiking trails to award-winning restaurants, resorts, tasting rooms, and breweries. It’s easy to bounce between the two, so I’ve compiled a list of unique restaurants in Scottsdale so you don’t have to waste precious time searching for true gems.

  • Grand Canyon and Sedona Day Adventure
  • Party Bike Pub Crawl of Old Town Scottsdale
  • 2-Hour Scottsdale Segway Tours
  • Morning Hot Air Balloon Flight Over Phoenix

Scottsdale especially is known for swank resorts. However, I have an option for a more humble condo if that’s more your speed.

Mid-Century Modern Condo

This cozy, newly-updated condo is within walking distance of Old Town Scottsdale, home to numerous tasting rooms, bars, restaurants, galleries, and shops. You can expect a secluded back porch, a flat-screen TV, and tons of natural lighting.

Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia

link to book | Scottsdale, AZ | price: $400+ | fits: varies | dog friendly

pool area with fountain and fire pit

I wrote a long spiel in my weekend guide to Scottsdale on how the Omni was one of the best resorts I’ve ever stayed at. Located north of downtown Scottsdale in Paradise Valley, you’ll have an unparalleled view of Camelback Mountain, not to mention numerous restaurants, three pools, a spa, two boutiques, and endless activities all day long. This property along makes Arizona one of the best San Diego road trips.

Valle de Guadalupe

travel time: ~2 hours over the Mexican border | get directions | best for: wine tasting

While not technically the farthest in distance from San Diego, I saved Valle de Guadalupe for last because it involves driving through Mexico. I haven’t made it here yet, but it’s the highest on my San Diego road trips bucket list. I may or may not already have a spreadsheet dedicated to planning my first visit.

Valle de Guadalupe is located in Baja, California, Mexico, and has been dubbed “Mexico’s Napa.” It’s where over 90% of all wine in Mexico is made. There are over 100 wineries spread across the peninsula ranging from boutique estate wineries like Las Nubes to award-winning premium wineries like Monte Xanic .

  • Valle de Guadalupe Wine Tasting
  • ATV Off-Road Winery Adventure in Valle de Guadalupe
  • Premium Valle de Guadalupe Wine and Food Tour

There are a ton of beautiful hotels to stay near vineyards. Here are two options off the beaten path.

These trippy bubble rooms are located on a campground surrounded by vineyards and restaurants. Each bubble room is flawlessly designed in France and offers a 360° view of the surrounding vineyards.

This adorable loft is situated in the middle of a working winery. It features massive windows to let in natural light and has a private patio equipped with a fire pit, grill, hammock, and epic mountain views.

Meet the Insider: Alicia Perry, beverage director at Consortium Holdings

Location: San Diego, California

Alicia Perry is a born-and-raised San Diegan who’s been working with Consortium Holdings for nearly eight years. The company is known for crafting some of the city’s top-tier cocktail bars and restaurants, and most recently unveiled a massive seven-outlet F&B project at the Lafayette Hotel . The 1940s property has been meticulously restored, bringing Hollywood’s golden-era glamour and high design to the North Park neighborhood. Here are Perry’s recommendations for what to explore on your next visit.

The Lafayette Hotel Interior

Kimberly Motos

“Naturally, I can’t help but recommend The Lafayette Hotel . With its rebirth being so close to our hearts, we aimed to create a space that would remain energized and supported by its local community—all the while evoking interest of travelers both nationally and globally.“

Torrey Pines Beach

John Apps/Unsplash

“I would start off my morning with a visit to one of my favorite coffee shops in North Park,  Hawthorn Coffee . Otherwise, make a quick trip up to Bird Rock , and enjoy an almond croissant from Wayfarer Bread , a bakery that focuses on artisan loaves. Trekking north up the coast, Torrey Pines is a great hike. Otherwise, the Solana Beach area is great, Seascape Surf to be exact.”

Cowboy Star Banana Pudding

Cowboy Star

Following a long day out in the sun, Perry says, “I’d make my way back down to the central area for dinner and a cocktail, starting at Cowboy Star ,” a classic steakhouse “that provides a consistent yet elevated experience. The space itself is warm, inviting, and certainly dignified.”

Reservations are released at the beginning of the month for the following month at Soichi Sushi . “The wait-list alone sets the tone. The experience is unmatched, intimate, engaging, and refined. Chef Soichi Kadoya, now a Michelin one-star, provides a thoughtful and distinguished dining experience.”

Realm of the 52 Remedies Interior

“Sitting under the skylight at the The Lafayette Hotel Lobby Bar while taking in the sun and enjoying a Pimm’s Cup or Brandy Crusta is the way to go. Walking into the Realm of the 52 Remedies , you can’t help but to be enamored of the decor inspired by ancient Chinese medicine. The cocktail list is inventive and alluring, yet approachable. It’s a memorable experience driven by genuine hospitality.”

Casa Y Cocina Interior

Elexia de la Parra

“Some of my favorite shops include Pigment , Shop Good , Casa y Cocina , and Revival Vintage Eyewear . I tend to make my way to that block [around Ray Street and North Park Way] and poke my head in. You’re guaranteed a one-stop shop to find the perfect gift or something special.”

San Diego Wine Tours: FAQ

Valle de Guadalupe wine tours from San Diego cost ~$255 – $270 USD per person. Meanwhile, wine tours in the San Diego area cost ~$120 – $259 USD depending on the tour.

While the San Diego area has about 100 different places you can go wine tasting, I wouldn’t say it’s known for wine. Instead, San Diego is known for its thriving surf culture , fantastic year-round weather, and delicious & diverse food scene !

In order to cross the border, you’ll need your passport. That said, the good news is that you’ll be able to have a smooth and expedited border crossing by going with the established tours that have a special pass.

The best time of the year of a wine tour is between April – June and September – November. But, to see the harvest season in full swing, I recommend going during the fall!

Aside from wine tours, you can do a fun food tour , go surfing, hike through Torrey Pines , spend time at the many beautiful beaches, and visit Balboa Park — there are tons of activities!

With so many things to do in San Diego and it being relatively easy to get around the city , I recommend first-timers spend at least a full 3 days in San Diego! It’s such a wonderful city with so much to offer — even after living there for 4 years, I haven’t seen probably a 10th of the city 😅

How to Get to the Valle de Guadalupe From San Diego

de diego travel tours

 TripSavvy / Molly Fergus

Most people think of Tecate and tequila when they think of Mexico —certainly not wine. But the Valle de Guadalupe, just 90 miles south of San Diego in northern Baja , is a rustic wine destination that’s already being called the Napa of Mexico. We say it’s even better.

The region is one of the fastest-growing wine destinations in the world, with over 150 wineries, yet it remains unfussy and relaxed — and every single winery offers a distinct experience. Sip a bright rosé at Vena Cava , a winery constructed from upcycled materials like 1960s fishing boats; sample nebbiolos at Montefiori , a winery owned by an Italian immigrant who brought grapes straight from the motherland; or drink a bold tempranillo at Adobe Guadalupe while feasting on tapas from a food truck.

In short, you should check out the Guadelupe Valley before it actually becomes Napa (pricier and more developed). The trip is easily doable as a day trip or a long weekend from San Diego or Los Angeles and there are a few ways to get from Southern California to the Valle de Guadalupe.

Hire a Tour Guide

The quick growth in the Valley has brought an abundance of tour groups and guides who will take care of all the logistics for you, including pick-up and drop-off in San Diego, fast-lane border crossings back into the US, and restaurant orders made easy — not to mention a designated driver to take the wheel while you sip the region’s excellent reds. This is arguably the easiest way to enjoy a day at the local vineyards and breweries and there are many tour companies you can find to take you around:

  • Boca Roja Wine Adventures : Tim Barnes started Boca Roja in spring 2016 as a way to ditch the corporate grind. Today he runs a team of six who will organize private tours and drive your group (up to 14 people) around the valley for a customized vacation. You can choose specific wineries to visit, or just relax and let Tim and his team arrange an itinerary — they’re the experts, after all. Winery trips from San Diego or the cruise port in Ensenada are popular, but Boca Roja will also organize longer visits, surf adventures, and craft beer tours, any day of the week.
  • Club Tengo Hambre : Started by two Mexico-focused bloggers, this hip gastro tour company dubs itself a “roving supper club.” Its organized wine and craft beer tours of the Valley include pick up and drop off in San Ysidro — the group will walk across the border together — transportation to each of the stops, and tastings and meals at up to six establishments.
  • Baja Wine and Dine Tours : Gather 6 of your closest friends and fill up a private car for an eight-hour tour through the Valle. Most packages from Baja Wine and Dine include three tastings and lunch, but you can set up additional winery visits if you have time (tastings or drinks cost extra). If you have a smaller group and your own vehicle, Baja will arrange a private, licensed chauffeur to take you around the region.

Drive Yourself

The majority of the drive from San Diego to Ensenada is a picture-perfect cruise along the Pacific Coast on a paved toll road. Bumpy dirt roads connect the wineries in the valley, however, so be sure your car can handle the terrain. Logistics vary based on whether you are renting a car or driving your own vehicle:

  • Rental cars : If you rent a car stateside, your rental company might not allow you to drive its vehicles into Mexico. Check with any vendor before renting, and prepare to pay an extra fee or put a deposit down on your credit card if the rental is permitted. An alternative is to rent a car in Mexico , but know that rates posted online often don’t include government-mandated insurance.
  • Your own vehicle: Mexico does not accept US liability insurance or coverage provided by your credit card, so you’ll need to buy an additional waiver for your time abroad. Check with your auto insurance provider for a quote on a separate policy for international travel.

Time Your Border Crossing

The Valle de Guadalupe is close to San Diego, but crossing back into the US often involves long lines and hefty wait times. Here are a few tips for avoiding the worst of it:

  • Aim for off hours: Many Tijuana residents commute into San Diego for work in the morning and head back to Mexico during the evening rush hour. On the weekends, the rush hours operate in the reverse, particularly late-night Saturday, when partiers are heading home, and Sunday afternoon, when weekend visitors are wrapping up their trips.
  • Check the US Customs Site: The US Customs and Border Site offers real-time updates on waits for drivers, commercial vehicles, and pedestrian and land ports of entry. Use the site to monitor traffic and head to the border when wait times are minimal.
  • Take the Ready Lane: Riders with select identification —including passport cards, Global Entry cards, and SENTRI passes—may use the Ready Lanes, which are slightly faster than the general lanes. The system works by detecting RFID chips in the cards. Standard US passports do not comply.
  • Apply for SENTRI: If you expect to travel across the border frequently, consider applying for a SENTRI card, the land-border version of Global Entry. Candidates who pass an advanced screening and pay a fee may use an express entry lane for five years; all passengers in one vehicle must have SENTRI.

You can visit with a tour guide that will handle your pick-up and drop-off, or you can drive yourself.

Yes, the road most of the way is a cruise along the Pacific Coast on a paved toll road. Make sure your car can handle rougher roads, though, for getting to the wineries from the main roads.

The Valle de Guadalupe, a top wine destination, is just 90 miles south of San Diego in northern Baja, making it an easy day or weekend trip.

What do I need to bring on Mexico Tours from San Diego

First and foremost, make sure to bring your passport on a tour to Mexico from San Diego! It might seem obvious, but there are people who forget it. That’s the main thing that you need to bring.

The other things we recommend are:

  • Bottled water or a filtered water bottle
  • Sim card 📱 or leave your phone off (can also ask your carrier for a special plan, like Verizon’s International Travel Plan )

Outside of that, just bring your sense of adventure and some courtesy to the locals you’ll meet!

Is it Safe to Take a Mexico Tour from San Diego?

This question usually receives a lot of varied responses. Generally speaking, the answer is yes. Most Mexico Tours from San Diego are carefully planned and monitored by experienced professionals, so you can be sure that your safety and well-being will be taken care of.

It is worth noting that this is the busiest land border crossing in the Western Hemisphere!

Cities like Tijuana are known for their crime (and there is a lot of crime ), but tourists are generally safe. Of course this is assuming you are keeping your eyes open, staying under the radar, sticking to the crowded and patrolled places and avoiding the rough areas. We also recommend not visiting at night, as crime typically increases in the evening.

Also double check that there aren’t any travel warnings when you are planning on going to Mexico.

Overall, it’s much safer to visit Mexico on a tour with a local and experienced guide than to try and know all of the okay areas vs. the avoid areas on your own. A tour is generally a much better option, as long as it’s reputable and has plenty of legitimate reviews to back it up!

When is the Best Time to visit Mexico from San Diego?

The Pacific Coast side of Baja California generally offers great (or better) weather in all four seasons. It’s typically cooler during the winter months, but not too cold. The summer months can be hot, but rarely sweltering. So it really comes down to preference and why you’re visiting.

The busiest time to visit Tijuana is between May and September. This is when temperatures are warmest. Spring or fall months are generally better for cooler temperatures without being too hot to walk around and enjoy.

If you’re visiting Valle de Guadalupe, you might consider coming during the summer months as this is generally when everything is alive and open. Spring or fall months can be ideal though due to the milder temperatures.

Just note that vineyards might be closed or offer shorter operating times during the off seasons (winter months, Dec-Feb).

What you need to know when traveling for taylor swift’s eras tour.

US singer and songwriter Taylor Alison Swift, also known as Taylor Swift performs on stage at the ... [+] Paris La Defense Arena as part of her The Eras Tour, in Nanterre, north-western France, on May 9, 2024.

Taylor Swift thrilled fans with the addition of performances from her latest album The Tortured Poets Department when she kicked off the European leg of The Eras Tour in Paris on Thursday, May 9, 2024. She jokingly called that section of the show Female Rage: The Musical . Most concertgoers already knew and sang along to every word of all the songs she sang from the album even though it was released just a few weeks earlier on April 19. Such is the power of Swift.

In her long career of riveting live shows, her stunning performance of “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?” may very well be her masterpiece so far. Swift is enjoying unprecedented success with her latest albums and tour, which showcase how she can tell a story like no other artist. Both her singing voice and her literary voice are stronger than ever, and it’s joyful to watch Swift embody and embrace her mightiness as a performer.

It's no wonder many fans are willing to travel hundreds or even thousands of miles for the chance to see Taylor Swift perform live. Since tickets sold out so quickly for the few remaining U.S. tour dates and resellers are aware of the intense demand, some fans discovered it was more doable to attend one of her international shows.

So, many fans in the U.S. and other countries have decided to make a vacation out of going to The Eras Tour in Europe this summer. If you are among them, here’s some advice on how to make the most of your international adventure.

Consider Your Lodging and Transportation Choices First

Before buying a ticket, be sure that you will have accommodations available. If you can book a hotel that’s within walking distance of a stadium and know the area is safe, that is ideal. Otherwise, check bus and train schedules for the night of your venue, then look at hotels that might be close to bus or train stops.

With tens of thousands of fellow concertgoers leaving at the same time, transportation can get tricky. If you book a room that’s farther from the venue, try to get a rental car instead of vying for a taxi or rideshare after the show. If you do that, just be sure parking will be available. You may need to buy a parking pass from the venue.

Also be aware that hotel room prices skyrocket when Swift is in town because there is such a high demand. If you are renting a car and don’t mind a longer drive, you can save a lot of money by booking a hotel room that’s a longer drive from the venue.

Enjoy The Moment

Amy Wilkinson, a 49-year-old Swiftie from Tucson, AZ, went viral in December 2023 for her reenactments of The Eras Tour performances using Elf on the Shelf dolls. She posted them to her Instagram, @Tswizzle_Momma , and found thousands of people watching each time she posted her videos. Like many other Swifties in the US, she is flying to Europe for The Eras Tour.

Wilkinson told me she had this advice for fellow fans going to the show abroad, “Enjoy the entire experience, from the moment you get on the plane until the morning after. You may be going for the concert, but the memories are made in the details. See the sights. Enjoy the food. Meet other Swifties. This is at the heart of what international travel is about.”

Make The Friendship Bracelets

Rebecca Bartley, a Swiftie from Nova Scotia, Canada, is going to Sweden to see The Eras Tour. She advises bringing friendship bracelets to share with fellow concertgoers on the night of your show. Wilkinson suggested making friendship bracelets in the language of the country where you’ll be seeing the show.

MARINA DEL REY, CALIFORNIA - OCTOBER 13: A Taylor Swift fan, friendship bracelet detail, attends the ... [+] opening night theatrical release of "Taylor Swift : The Eras Tour" at AMC Marina Marketplace 6 on October 13, 2023 in Marina del Rey, California. (Photo by Amanda Edwards/Getty Images)

It’s easy to learn how to make friendship bracelets. I had never dabbled in making jewelry before, but now I find great joy in creating friendship bracelets. I created dozens and handed them to fans at The Eras Tour movie.

To make friendship bracelets, I start by choosing the colors I want and which word or phrase I want the bracelet to express. Then I choose colorful beads and pick out all the necessary letter beads.

Next, I cut off elastic string. I find it’s best to use Stretch Magic elastic string because of its strength and durability. To make the bracelets, I cut off a piece of string that’s twice as long as I need so that there is ample room for cutting and tying multiple knots.

Then I tape one end of the string to my workspace, string the beads I have set aside until I feel like the bracelet is complete. Being careful to not let any of the beads slide off the string, I then wrap it around my wrist to see how it fits and then consider whether I am making the bracelet for a wrist that’s likely larger or smaller than mine. (Also, with elastic string, there’s room for a flexible fit.) I adjust accordingly.

As a last step, I make four to five knots in the string to tie off the bracelet. Many fans choose to add a dab of fabric glue to the end of the knot, but I found that got really messy and wasn’t necessary if you make multiple knots. Then I tuck the knots into one of the beads so that it doesn’t show on the bracelet. Then the bracelet is concert-ready!

Keep in mind that there are a lot of other ways to make friendship bracelets that are for more involved and creative that mine. And, if the idea of making friendship bracelets doesn’t sound fun to you, don’t worry. You can buy premade friendship bracelets on Etsy. Some Etsy shops like RainFoxx13 and BonniesBracelet have elaborate, beautiful friendship bracelets that you may want to keep for yourself. Others sell packs of friendship bracelets in bulk.

If you don’t want to trade friendship bracelets, that’s okay, too. The Swiftie community is accepting and supportive, and you still may get several bracelets as gifts.

What To Wear To The Eras Tour

There are no rules for what you should wear to Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour beyond the guidelines from the venue. Some fans go casual, and others choose to dress to the nines for the show. Some fans choose to wear merch from Taylor Swift’s official store . Many fans choose to dress up in costumes inspired by Swift’s songs and lyrics.

With the release of The Tortured Poets Department and its video “Fortnight,” some fans are choosing to imitate some of her looks from the video. Others are wearing their interpretation of the incredible costumes she wears during The Eras Tour concert. Others look at past eras for inspiration. You are likely to see every era represented in fan costumes at a show.

What You Should Bring To The Eras Tour In Europe

Wilkinson advised me that the number one thing to bring is a portable phone charger. If you plan on recording video and taking photos, your phone’s battery may die down quickly, and a phone charger can ensure you can keep capturing the memories all night.

Earplugs are a good idea if you’re sensitive to loud noise. If you’re bringing kids along, they are a must. They ensure you can enjoy the music while protecting your ears.

Bring along a cardigan or jacket. Layering is a good idea for a concert during the summer. Although it may be hot in the stadium, you might be chilly on the way home from the show.

You can’t go wrong bringing along hand sanitizer and a travel pack of tissues. Even if you can get through “All Too Well” without tearing up, you may cry at the sheer excitement of the experience. It can be intense in the best way.

If you have tickets that are far back, bring along binoculars to see close-up details.

What To Avoid At The Eras Tour

Don’t come to the stadium with a big bag. If you haven’t attended stadium concerts before, you may not know that you need to carry a clear bag if you want to bring a purse. It also has to fit within the measurements allowed in the stadium, so you can’t just buy a clear backpack and expect to get in the show. Check with your show’s venue to make sure you follow their rules for what you can bring.

How To Get Taylor Swift Tickets In 2024

Tickets have already gone on sale for the rest of the currently confirmed dates of The Eras Tour for 2024. However, you can get secondhand tickets from resellers. It’s usually not a good idea to buy from individuals in Facebook groups offering to sell tickets. That’s hard to verify, and many are scammed that way. Instead, check with the individual venue to see how their resell process works. It varies throughout Europe depending on the country and the individual stadium.
