You’ll love these experiences in stunning Stockholm

Any trip to Stockholm should begin with a wander down the cobbled alleys of Gamla Stan. Kirk Fisher/Shutterstock
Stockholm ’s pleasures are legion, from abundant waterways and elegant green spaces to neighborhoods that brim with character to fascinating museums that showcase art, explore the past and celebrate Sweden ’s culture.
Even if you only have a few days here, you can see and do plenty. Whether you’re looking for history, culture or nature (or all three), here are our suggestions for places and activities that should be at the top of your list.
1. Take in the grandeur of Stadshuset
Topped with three golden crowns, Stockholm’s red-brick City Hall has been a symbol of the city since its completion in 1923. Visits are by guided tour only, with highlights including the Blue Hall, where the Nobel Prize banquet is held every year, and the opulent Golden Hall, covered in mosaics depicting key events and people in Swedish history.
Across the courtyard, the 348ft(106m)-high tower has spectacular 360-degree views of central Stockholm. An elevator takes you halfway up, after which there are stairs and sloping walkways to the cupola.
2. Stroll down Strandvägen
Stretching along the Östermalm waterfront from Nybroplan to the Djurgården bridge, Strandvägen is Stockholm’s grandest boulevard. Turreted apartment buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries line the northern side of the street; on the southern side, a gracious waterfront promenade follows a quay dotted with cafés and restaurants.
Passenger ferries and sightseeing boats bound for the archipelago load at the avenue’s western end. Come summer, when crowds linger into light late evenings, Strandvägen is Stockholm at its liveliest and most beautiful.
3. Take to the water and see Stockholm by boat
Visitors are often surprised that Stockholm’s core consists of islands and canals – which means you haven’t really seen the city until you’ve seen it from the water (or jumped into it !). At the very least, hop on the Djurgården passenger ferry for the 7-minute trip between Slussen and Djurgården.
For something more informative, take a Harbor Boat Tour around the islands of Kungsholmen and Långholmen, circle Djurgården on the Royal Canal Tour or travel Under the Bridges of Stockholm to visit both the Baltic and the Lake Mälaren sides of the city. Alternatively, choose one of the hop-on-hop-off boats that travel between key attractions on the Stockholm’s Baltic side.
4. Get pastoral on Djurgården
Known for its many museums, the island of Djurgården is also a fine destination for nature and outdoor recreation. Once a royal deer park, the 689-acre oasis on the eastern edge of the city has extensive woodlands and meadows crisscrossed by walking and cycling paths. You can rent bicycles next to the bridge at the Djurgården Visitor Center and at Sjöcaféet , which also rents kayaks, canoes and pedal boats.
For a beautiful walk or ride, follow the path along the bay and canal on Djurgården’s north side from the blue gate (Blå Porten) near the bridge. It’s a little over 2.5 miles (4km) to the island’s easternmost tip. About 20 minutes from the bridge, Rosendals Trädgård makes a delightful stop, with biodynamic gardens, a farm-to-table cafe and a stone-oven bakery.
5. Feel Swedish culture come alive at Skansen
The world’s oldest open-air museum, Skansen provides a cultural history of Sweden at one large but accessible site. Since it opened in 1891, more than 150 buildings of cultural significance have been moved here from all over the country. In many of them, you can watch people in period dress making handicrafts or performing other traditional tasks. Various gardens represent different regions, while a zoo lets you encounter a variety of Swedish wildlife.
If you happen to be in town for any major holidays such as Walpurgis Night, National Day, Midsummer, St Lucia Day, or Christmas, head to Skansen to experience traditional Swedish celebrations.
6. Get lost in the cobbled streets of Gamla Stan
Every visitor to Stockholm heads to the Old Town – and for good reason. Dating back hundreds of years, the cobblestone streets lined with narrow buildings in warm ochre hues are a delight to wander around – especially once you get away from the touristy main drag of Västerlånggatan.
There are major attractions here, too, from medieval and Renaissance churches to the huge baroque Royal Palace . Yet much of Gamla Stan’s charm comes from simpler pleasures: a quiet square, a tiny alley, a hidden courtyard, or quirky delights such as Stockholm’s smallest statue, an iron boy just 5.9in (15cm) high, looking up to the moon.
7. Celebrate Sweden’s sensational super troupers at ABBA: The Museum
Four decades after splitting up (holograms don’t count), ABBA remains a pop music phenomenon and Sweden’s biggest musical export of all time. If you’re a fan, don’t miss this irresistibly camp museum packed with memorabilia, from photos and letters to the group’s elaborate stage costumes and a replica of the Polar recording studio with original instruments and equipment.
Most entertaining are the many interactive stations where you can sing with the band on a hologram stage, try your hand at mixing music, dance like your favorite ABBA-avatar or “try on” costumes for a virtual photo shoot.
8. Plunge into Swedish history at Historiska Museet
For anyone interested in Scandinavia’s past, Historiska Museet is a must. Its Viking exhibit showcases more than 2500 artifacts, with interactive stations covering just about every aspect of Viking life. Another permanent exhibit picks up where the Viking exhibit leaves off, tracing Swedish history from the year 1000 to the present day, with a timeline on the floor to guide your steps.
Below ground, the glittering Gold Room displays more than 3000 gold and silver treasures, including three heavy gold collars from the 5th century CE and a jewel-studded gold reliquary from the 13th century.
9. Board a 17th-century ship at Vasamuseet
This custom-built museum commemorates one of Sweden’s greatest failures: the sinking of the warship Vasa , just 20 minutes after it set sail under great fanfare from central Stockholm in 1628. Although built as an expression of Swedish military power, Vasa was fatally unbalanced, and a strong gust of wind was enough to cause her to list. Water quickly flowed in through the open gunports – and down she went, only 0.8mi (1.3km) into her journey and just less than 394ft (120m) from shore.
For over three centuries Vasa lay at the bottom of Stockholm harbor – before a dramatic salvage operation in 1961 raised her to the surface. Today displayed in a hangar-like space just next to (but not in) the water, the impressively preserved ship is the museum’s star attraction. Other exhibits provide background and context to this compelling tale of epic failure and amazing recovery.
10. Explore Skeppsholmen and Kastellholmen
Smack in the middle of Stockholm’s harbor, the green islands of Skeppsholmen and Kastellholmen provide a perfect break from Stockholm’s urban bustle. As you walk around the islets, beautiful views unfold in all directions, with Strandvägen and Djurgården to the north and east, and Södermalm and Gamla Stan to the south and west. You’ll also find interesting boats to admire, from the full-rigged sailing ship af Chapman (now a hostel ) to 19th-century wooden boats and a lightship docked along Östra Brobänken.
For more than 300 years, Skeppsholmen and Kastellholmen were the domain of the Swedish Navy. Though military operations have since moved elsewhere, the triple-tailed Swedish naval flag is still flown daily from the roof of the small citadel on Kastellholmen: a symbol that the country is at peace.
11. Take in the views from Södermalm
With steep cliffs rising straight from the waterfront, Södermalm is the place to go for panoramic views of central Stockholm. One justly popular spot is Monteliusvägen , a clifftop walking path just west of Slussen, opposite Stadshuset and Riddarholmen. A bit further west, central Stockholm’s highest point, Skinnarviksberget, is a good place to soak up some sun or enjoy a picnic while gazing out at Kungsholmen and Lake Mälaren.
Alternatively, head east from Slussen to the clifftop street Fjällgatan for a magnificent view encompassing Djurgården, Kastellholmen, Skeppsholmen, Gamla Stan and beyond.

12 Stockholm highlights
Publish date : 17 June 2024
In Stockholm for the first time? Here are the most talked about must-see attractions and museums in town.
The list of things to do in Stockholm could be made endless and there are more than a hundred attractions to choose from.
To make it easier we have picked out the most unique and talked about attractions and museums for you to choose from. From internationally renowned attractions like the artful metro system and The Vasa Museum to contemporary museums like Fotografiska and ABBA The Museum.
- ABBA The Museum – Sweden’s most famous musical export has its museum on the island of Djurgården. Follow in Agnetha, Björn, Benny, and Anni-Frid’s footsteps and discover how ABBA became a global disco phenomenon in an interactive exhibition.
- Drottningholm Palace – Drottningholm, built during the latter half of the 17th century, is the best-preserved palace of its kind in Sweden. The baroque palace overlooking Lake Mälaren is a popular day-trip attraction and the official residency for the royal family. Highlights include the palace, the surrounding park, and the well-preserved palace theater; one of the few 18th-century theaters in Euorpa still in regular use.
- Fotografiska – Fotografiska opened in 2010 and has become one of the world's premier venues for contemporary photography, with branches in New York, Milano, Tallinn, and Shanghai. The museum's restaurant has won several accolades for its heavy focus and sustainability, and the outdoor bar is a popular summer hang-out spot.
- Moderna Museet – Housed in a building conceived by Rafael Moneo, Moderna Museet features one of Europe's foremost collections of modern and contemporary art. Moderna's permanent collection includes works by Dalí, Picasso, Derkert, Christo, Duchamp, and many more. It also features regular programming of thought-provoking temporary exhibitions and a sculpture park surrounding the museum.
- Monteliusvägen – Monteliusvägen, running along the northeast edge of Södermalm island, is a beloved walking path and a great viewpoint of inner city Stockholm. A popular spot for a sunny Sunday walk, it offers a vista over Kungsholmen, City Hall, City/Norrmalm, Riddarholmen, Old Town/Gamla Stan, and Slussen. Along the way, you'll also find the extremely picnic-compatible Ivar Lo's Park.
- Nationalmuseum – The premier museum of Swedish art and design. Nationalmuseum's collections span over 600 years and include paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics, furniture, classic designs of everyday objects, and more. The Gustavsberg Porcelain Museum is a branch of Nationalmuseum, perfect for those who want in-depth knowledge about Swedish ceramics and pottery.
- Royal National City Park and Djurgården – The island of Djurgården has been a destination for recreation and entertainment for centuries. A big portion of the Royal National City Park (established in 1995; the first of its kind in the world) is located here; its lush, green nature contrasts with inner city Stockholm's busy streets just a short walk away. On the entertainment side, many of Stockholm's most popular attractions and museums are located in Djurgården. Several of the ones mentioned in this article, as well as Gröna Lund , The National Museum of Science and Technology , Nordiska Museet , and more.
- Skansen Open-Air Museum – Beloved by visitors and locals alike, Skansen is the world's oldest open-air museum. Founded in 1891, Skansen is a time machine to the Sweden of yesteryear. Its many historical buildings, dwellings, and farmsteads have been transported here and rebuilt, brick-by-brick, log-by-log. Skansen also has a zoo with Nordic animals, and two aquariums; one focused on the Baltic and one with tropical fish and amphibians .
- Stockholm's metro system – One of Stockholm's most visible attractions is its subway system, with artfully decorated platforms and ticket halls. Although the blue line has probably the most visually striking stations, most stations in the system feature some kind of artful decoration. Some of the most photogenic stations are Kungsträdgården [pictured above], T-Centralen , and Stadion .
- The City Hall – The City Hall is an iconic part of Stockholm's skyline. Built from over 8 million red bricks, City Hall has been the seat of power in Stockholm since 1923. The building was designed by Ragnar Östberg and is a prime example of Swedish national romanticism in architecture. Most notably, the televised Nobel banquet is held here each year in December.
- The Royal Palace and Old Town (Gamla Stan) – The current Royal Palace was finished in 1754, having been constructed after a fire destroyed the previous one, " Tre Kronor ", in 1697. Open to the public, it has over 600 rooms and 5 museums. The palace's location is in Stockholm's oldest district, Gamla Stan (Old Town), making it a perfect destination for a whole day of historical exploration.
- The Vasa Museum – Arguably the most famous failure in Swedish military history, the warship Vasa sank during her maiden voyage in 1628. The Vasa was rediscovered in 1950, mostly intact due to the brackish waters, salvaged, and put on display in a temporary museum. The current museum opened in 1988 and is one of Sweden's most popular tourist attractions, with over 1 million visitors annually.

Travel tips for Sweden tours
This Scandinavian hot spot offers something for everyone at different times of the year. For travelers looking to take part in local festivities, the best time to visit Sweden is in December. Christmas markets are in full swing during the holiday season.
Summer is also a fantastic time to visit Sweden, when temperatures are comfortable and days stretch longer and conditions are perfect for outside exploration. During June through early July, Stockholm sees about 18 hours of sunlight daily!
Sweden is nestled within the Nordic region, which makes it an excellent place to visit on a trip that includes the neighboring Nordic destinations. Our 10-day tour, Highlights of Scandinavia: Sweden, Norway & Denmark , gives you an introduction to each country. If you have two weeks to spare, our Scandinavia: The Capitals & the Fjords tour may be right for you.
Here are some of our favorite places to visit in Sweden:
- Stockholm : The winding medieval streets and beautiful buildings of the Old Town, locally known as Gamla Stan, are just a few of the capital city’s unique appeals.
- Uppsala : This ancient city holds the tombs of the first Swedish kings, Scandinavia’s oldest university, and an 800-year-old Gothic cathedral.
- Lovön Island : This island is just a short ferry ride from Stockholm and is home of the 16th-century Drottningholm Palace, a UNESCO-listed royal residence.

Our Sweden vacation packages give you the opportunity to taste traditional cuisine at included meals. A few things you’ll come across here? Smoked salmon and pickled herring served with crisp bread often act as the centerpiece for a smörgåsbord , or Scandinavian buffet. Meatballs accompanied by lingonberry jam are a typical dish, as are open-faced sandwiches.
Another cultural experience you may take part in while on one of our tours to Sweden is fika . This mid-morning and mid-afternoon gathering is a social hour, coffee break, and chance to nibble on pastries or bread, all rolled into one.
Packing light is always a good idea when traveling—that’s our recommendation when going on group tours to Sweden, too. One suitcase and one carry-on bag per person is the ideal amount of luggage to aim for. That should be enough to hold everything you need and still allow you to go from place to place with ease.
When it comes to packing clothing for your trip, be sure to check the weather forecast as temperatures vary throughout the year. Layers and comfortable walking sneakers are always a good idea. Don’t worry if you have questions about what to bring on tour—one you’ve reserved one of our trips to Sweden, we’ll send you detailed information about your itinerary, including a packing list!

Group drives hours to visit abandoned GA hospital they saw on TikTok. Now they’re facing charges
A group of four north Georgians saw an abandoned hospital in Newnan while scrolling TikTok and decided to pay it a visit.
The old Newnan Hospital was shut down in 2012 and has sat empty since then, according to the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation.
Earlier this week, Newnan police were called to the hospital after a security guard spotted four people inside and saw one of them with a gun.

They were later identified as Brandon Baird, 19, Atlanta McCure, 18, Madison Perez, 18, and Gavin Shoilekov, 21. McCure is from Jasper and the others have addresses listed in Ellijay.
After they were spotted, all four ran out of the building. Newnan officers found a shirtless Baird and chased him down the street until he was arrested.
The other three were seen walking towards the Coweta County Jail and taken into custody.

Next time I go to Scandinavia, I'll definitely keep Nordic Visitor in mind. They booked us great hotels that were centrally located and made it easy for us to tour every location at our own pace. The timing of travel was well considered so we could grab breakfast before our train to the next location, our accommodation were lovely, and communication leading up to our trip was smooth, even given the time difference. Highly recommend.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sweden Tours
If you're thinking of visiting Sweden, you might have a few questions. For your convenience we’ve collected the most asked ones, so check our FAQs below. You can also find more detailed information on booking and payments on our general FAQ page .
1. Is Sweden safe to visit?
Sweden is a safe country for both visitors and locals. In fact, the Global Peace Index rates Sweden as one of the safest countries in the world. Sweden is also one of the safest driving countries in the world according to the World Health Organisation .
2. Is Sweden Scandinavian?
Sweden is part of Scandinavia, along with the neighbouring countries of Denmark and Norway.
3. Is Sweden part of Europe?
Yes – Sweden is part of Europe and is located in the north of the continent.
4. What is the currency of Sweden?
The Swedish krona (SEK) is the official currency of Sweden – keep this in mind if you plan on exchanging money as Sweden does not use the Euro.
5. What language is spoken in Sweden?
The official language of Sweden is Swedish, with English widely spoken. However in Swedish Lapland and the northerly regions, the locals may also converse in Finnish or Sami.
6. What is the warmest month in Sweden?
The warmest month on average is July. Swedish summers are typically pleasant, and temperatures can get as high as 30°C (86°F) between June and August.
7. What is the best month to go to Sweden?
For mild weather and sunshine, we recommend visiting Sweden from May to September. Not only will you experience Sweden’s charming towns and natural attractions in pleasant conditions, but you’ll also have longer summer days to enjoy them. Regions close to the Arctic Circle experience the ‘midnight sun’ during the summer months – a phenomenon where daylight lasts well into the evening.
If you enjoy wintry activities, a cooler climate and landscapes blanketed in snow, then a visit between October and January is perfect for you. The winter is prime northern lights viewing season and Swedish Lapland is the ideal region to chase them down.
8. Where can we see northern lights in Sweden?
The further north you are of the Arctic Circle, the better your chances of seeing the northern lights, so we suggest visiting the province of Lapland . Here’s our list of aurora viewing areas:
- Kiruna, Sweden’s most northerly town
- Abisko, a charming mountain resort village in an “aurora zone”
- The Aurora Sky Station, a northern lights observatory based outside of Abisko
Swedish Lapland is a beautiful place to go on a ‘northern lights safari’, so why not learn more about the area, and what to expect there, in our northern lights Lapland guide .
9. When is the best time to see the northern lights in Sweden?
The best time to see the northern lights in Sweden is during winter, specifically from October to March, with peak visibility between December and February. Evenings are the best time to go searching for the lights and ideal viewing conditions are remote areas away from light pollution, with clear skies.
10. What is a self-guided tour?
A self-guided tour is a package where all of the bookings and activities are organised for you by your dedicated travel consultant. On these tours, you travel without a guide and navigate the journey yourself.
11. Which is best to tour Sweden – by rail, cruise or self-drive?
The best way to tour Sweden depends on the form of transport you most enjoy and how you prefer to experience attractions.
Sweden’s train system is prompt and comfortable, and when travelling through the countryside, the views from either side of the carriage are exceptional. Rail travel is popular among locals and for good reason – you get to enjoy a traffic-free journey with good amenities and opportunities to stretch your legs.
If you’re the seafaring type, then try a Scandinavian cruise that starts or ends in Sweden. You get to enjoy sweeping views of the coast and experience overnight stays in cosy cabins. By choosing to cruise, you’ll get to visit other famous Nordic cities like Copenhagen and Oslo. You’re also in visiting distance of cities like Tallinn and Helsinki. Find more cruises on our Scandinavian packages .
Self-drive tours are another appealing option as you get to set the pace of your journey and enjoy the flexibility of driving to each attraction. Sweden has some of the safest and most well-maintained roads in the world. A smooth and picturesque drive, another benefit of taking the wheel is that you receive a hand-drawn map of your route and a detailed reference guide with area information and nearby sight-seeing.
12. Can I choose the arrival date?
Yes, you can choose the best arrival date to suit you depending on package and season. All our vacation packages can be purchased online, and once you’ve decided on the best journey for you, you can choose your ideal dates. If you’ve already booked, but your travel plans have changed, then get in touch with your travel consultant as soon as possible so they can rearrange your trip.
13. When should I book my flight tickets?
We advise that you book your package first to secure your tour. It may be worth checking potential flight times and prices first, but be aware some airlines and flight booking websites raise their prices between visits, so remember to do research using “Private” or “Incognito” mode. Once your tour is confirmed by email, go ahead and purchase your flights. If you have missed out on flights, please get in touch with us to change the dates of your tour.
14. What should I pack for my trip?
We advise all our guests to dress sensibly and pack warm layers, as well as wear comfortable shoes when visiting Sweden. Northerly regions like Lapland can reach temperatures as low as -50°C (-58°F), so it’s best to wrap up! Scandinavian weather can change quickly and it’s better to plan for the unexpected than to be underprepared. We recommend that you bring:
- Jumper or fleece
- Waterproof jacket
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Umbrella or poncho
- Sleep mask (summer)
- Foot warmers (winter)
- Thermos (winter)
- Binoculars (for cruise-goers)
- Sunscreen and sunglasses (summer)

There are many things to see and do in Stockholm, a bustling and gorgeous city. For art lovers and museum goers, there are numerous unique locations to engage your intellect (see the museum section below). For active adventurers, a biking or walking tour of the city is an excellent way to understand its character and charm.
For foodies, enjoy Swedish delicacies and beverages, as you wander the main squares and districts. Don’t forget the canal tours and boat tours that you can take as well. The most popular attractions in Stockholm include: the Royal Palace, Gamla Stan (old town), Djurgarden island (beautiful parks and walks), Stockholm city hall, Ostermalm (chic neighborhood) and many excellent museums.
Souvenirs from Stockholm
Souvenirs are always a fun way to share your experience with others and to revel in your trip after you return home. Stockholm has a lot of local treasures that you can take with you including salted liquorice, wooden utensils such as a Swedish butter knife, lingonberry preserves, Swedish gummy candies, Swedish interior design or philosophy books and visuals of incorporating greenery into every living space. As always, your trip will reveal what is most interesting to you to bring home as a souvenir.
Stockholm Museums
Stockholm has many distinct and wonderful museums to explore. Ranging from historical to artistic to cultural, you are sure to learn more about Sweden from attending one or many of these museums. Some of the great museums include: Skansen the open-air museum on Djurgarden island, Fotografiska museum showcasing excellent photography, the ABBA museum that pays homage to this well-known band, the Vasa museum that takes you aboard the Vasa battleship and the Moderna Museet which hosts famous 20th century and modern visual artists.
Outside the City
There are plenty of day trips to take from Stockholm that are well-worth the visit. Whether you’d like to see some of the beautiful countryside Sweden has to offer, or some special towns, it is worth venturing outside of the city.
A very popular day trip is to Drottningholm Palace to tour the grounds and get a sense of royalty of past and present Sweden. Sigtuna is also a short trip from Stockholm and allows you to step into medieval times. Natural spaces near Stockholm include Djurgarden island, Tyresta National Park and further on Angso National Park.
Christmas Markets in Stockholm
During the Christmas season, many travelers delight in attending the festive Christmas markets in Stockholm and surrounding areas. These markets have homemade handicrafts, seasonal treats and delicacies, cheer and of course Santa for the kids.
Some popular Christmas markets are the Gamla Stan (old town) Christmas market, the Skansen Christmas market and the Drottningholm Palace market. All of the markets have beautiful environments and some have been running for over 100 years!
