Blake Lively's 'It Ends With Us' promotion called 'disrespectful' by some survivors of domestic abuse

Blake Lively smiles on the red carpet

Blake Lively has become the center of criticism online among some survivors of domestic violence, who say the actress has shifted focus away from the central premise of “It Ends with Us” during the film’s promotional tour.

The movie, which debuted in theaters on Aug. 9, is an adaptation of the widely popular Colleen Hoover book of the same name. It centers around florist Lily Bloom (played by Lively) and her abusive relationship with a neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid (played by Justin Baldoni). Hoover has said the story was inspired by her parents’ abusive marriage .

Some of the marketing around the film — which is being released by Sony Pictures Entertainment — has appeared lighthearted , with viewers being encouraged to “grab your friends” and “wear your florals” to see the film.

As expected with any major Hollywood film, Lively, as the star and executive producer, has been a central part of the marketing campaign. But some of Hoover’s fans online have expressed disappointment at the actress, saying she has promoted the film as more of a romantic comedy and has rarely addressed the darker subject matter of domestic violence.

“It was portrayed more so as a chick flick, like, ‘Grab your friends, wear your nice prints and come over here and watch this movie.’ And that’s not what it was about,” said Yesenia Puente Bravo, a survivor of intimate-partner violence who said she related to Hoover’s book.

“A lot of us that read the book and that relate to Lily are not going there because of the floral prints or the hair or the clothes,” she said. “We’re going there because we want to see ourselves on the big screen.”

Puente Bravo, 33, said the film’s promotion has felt so “disrespectful” that she no longer plans to see the movie in theaters. Dozens of people on X, TikTok and Reddit have echoed similar complaints, saying they wish the promotional campaign put more of a spotlight on survivors of domestic violence.

Representatives for Sony Pictures Entertainment, Lively, Baldoni and Hoover did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Despite the ongoing scrutiny over media interviews, official promotional materials for the movie, such as the trailer, appeared to make the movie’s domestic violence premise more clear. Millions of Hoover fans who had been awaiting the film adaptation were also quick to see it in theaters. The movie surpassed $180 million globally after just 10 days of release, according to Variety .

However, rumors surrounding alleged behind-the-scenes drama among cast members have continued to swirl amid its box office success. Online, fans dissected the New York City premiere red carpet, pointing out Baldoni did not appear in any photos alongside Hoover or other cast members. Others took note of Baldoni doing most of his media separately from the rest of the cast. And while he follows Lively and cast member Jenny Slate on Instagram, neither follow Baldoni.

In the past month, both Lively and Baldoni have posted about the film many times on social media.

Last week appeared to be the first time Lively posted about domestic violence. She wrote on her Instagram story, “Everyone deserves relationships free from domestic violence.” The post included statistics about intimate partner violence and a link to the National Domestic Violence Hotline.

She also reshared an interview with BBC News in which she said that, although the film covers domestic violence, “what’s important about this film is that [Lily] is not just a survivor and she’s not just a victim.”

Vocal critics of Lively said they feel she has talked more about the character’s wardrobe choices , and has kept her interviews playful with games or icebreakers . She’s also cross-promoted her hair care brand and organized an “It Ends With Us”-themed event with cocktails from her alcoholic drinks company . One of the cocktails was named “Ryle You Wait,” according to the Instagram post from Lively’s company, Betty Buzz.

Lively “named a cocktail after the abuser,” said Jjanga Weir, a domestic violence survivor. “So it’s just one insensitive thing after another, and then for her to plug her hair care company or her husband … She had so many opportunities, and she still does have an opportunity now, to make an apology and try to make things better.”

A clip of Lively talking about the film, cut from a lengthier interview, has also drawn scrutiny online. In it, an interviewer asks Lively how viewers who identified with the film’s darker themes could approach her about the subject. Lively responds, jokingly, that they could ask her “for my address or my phone number” or that she “could just location-share.”

In the full interview , which is available on YouTube but has not been widely circulated across social media, Lively goes on to say that “unfortunately, we all know at least someone … who have experienced [domestic violence]. And the beauty of this has been to see people and to see this movie alongside women who haven’t experienced this, thank goodness.”

Ryan Reynolds’s involvement during the marketing campaign became another point of criticism , with Lively and her husband appearing to cross-promote each other’s films on social media. Reynolds stars in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which debuted in July. Some fans online said they believe their promotions took away from the focus on domestic violence in “It Ends With Us.”

A representative for Reynolds did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Weir, who has been critical of the film’s overall marketing campaign, said she noticed a distinct contrast in the way Baldoni and Lively have promoted the film.

Several of Baldoni’s social media posts and media interviews have raised awareness toward domestic violence and shared resources . During the film’s premiere, he told ET , “this isn’t my night. This is a night for all the women we made this movie for.”

“It’s a shock for me for it to come from a man. I don’t know if it’s part of healing to see a man stand up for us, because I think it’s very important,” said Weir, 32. “Most men don’t want to listen to women. They want to listen to another man. So I think it’s incredibly important that Justin is making it about the actual issue rather than just himself.”

Maddie Spear, a trauma therapist who has worked with survivors of domestic violence, said she wishes Lively would have more openly used the phrase “domestic violence” in interviews and spoken about resources for those who may be seeking help.

“I have a lot of understanding for Blake. She’s an actress, and it might not be her full job to understand all the really hard themes of everything she is in,” said Spear, who was among those online who criticized remarks made by Lively during the media tour. “However, I think also, as the lead and a producer of this movie, there is an expectation for her to have a bit more understanding than the average actress in the film, especially if you’re choosing a film with such needed but heavy topics.”

Mik Zazon, a survivor of domestic violence who watched “It Ends With Us” on opening night, said much of the marketing “gave the whole movie just an awful taste in my mouth.”

Still, she said the film accurately portrayed some of the difficulties of what it’s like to struggle with intimate partner violence.

“The events of the violence happening were really blurry, to the point where you don’t know if it was an accident or not,” said Zazon, 28. “And also not being able to understand if that deep gut feeling she has in her stomach is justified, or an overreaction, is extremely real, and is something I dealt with in my four years of being in a relationship with an abuser.”

What Zazon and some other survivors said the movie depicted poorly, however, was the process of leaving such a relationship. It’s not as simple or smooth as asking for a divorce, many online said, and such direct confrontation with an abusive partner could be dangerous in real life.

Zazon said she also wishes the movie would have included a disclaimer at the beginning in order to better prepare viewers for the subject matter, as well as provided resources at the end.

“When we talk about this, it’s not just celebrity drama, it’s not just Hollywood drama,” she said. “I really think that this should have been a cultural shift in how we portray love in movies that represent such a deep personal issue that so many women go through.”

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline by calling 1-800-799-SAFE (7233), visiting www.thehotline.org or texting LOVEIS to 22522.

What is Black Myth Wukong Based On? Journey to the West Story Explained

Sun Wukong from Black Myth: Wukong, Journey to the West book cover

Game Science's much anticipated 2024 video game , Black Myth: Wukong , is based on one of the most popular stories in Chinese mythology.

Black Myth: Wukong drops players into a fantastical Asian landscape where they play as an anthropomorphic monkey protagonist, known as the Destined One. Despite an absence of early PS5 reviews , the game has been received favourably on PC, gaining a Metacritic score of 81.

The action RPG draws on the soulslike genre for its gameplay, but for its story it is steeped in the culture and lore presented in one of China's most classic tales, Journey to the West .

What is the Story of Journey to the West?

black myth wukong destined one

Journey to the West was first published in China in the 16th century and has gone on to become one of the most famous and beloved stories in East Asia.

The story's premise involves the pilgrimage of a monk, Tang Sanzang, as he ventures into the Western Regions to recover sacred Buddhist scriptures, and encounters a series of tests and trials along the way.

Aiding the monk on his journey are three disciples. Zhu Bajie, simplified to "pig" in English, was an immortal commander who was reborn in the womb of a sow due to an error in the reincarnation wheel and rendered him a pig-human hybrid.

Sha Wujing, translated to "sand", was a celestial who was exiled to the mortal world and made to look like a sandman after he accidentally broke a goblet belonging to the Queen Mother of the West.

Rounding out the trio is Sun Wukong, aka "monkey" or Monkey King, the most famous of the three and the character who holds the most importance for the story of Black Myth: Wukong.

In short, Sun Wukong was a monkey who sought immortality and was taught the 72 heavenly methods of transformation by the Grand Master of Bodhi.

He was often a mischief-maker amongst those in heaven and stole their immortal prizes in his quest for eternal life. His teachings and expertise in martial arts and magic also made him very powerful and when the deities of heaven attempted to stop him he was able to fight off their 100,000 celestial soldiers.

The Jade Emperor eventually appealed to the Buddha to subdue him, which resulted in Sun Wukong being sealed in a mountain for 500 years, until he was freed by Sang Tanzang and joined the pilgrimage.

The Monkey King aids the monk's quest with his iconic staff, the Ruyi Jingu Bang, which can be shrunk and enlarged to seismic proportions and weighs 17,550 pounds, which Sun Wukong can handle with ease.

Journey to the West features 100 chapters, in which Sun Wukong and his companions primarily help to defend Sang Tanzang from a variety of enemies and monsters known as "Yaoguai".

The story ends with the monk receiving the sacred scriptures from Buddha and the deity providing blessings upon the group, which results in Sun Wukong achieving Buddhahood.

Journey to the West is a tale that has inspired many adaptations over the years, including the 2009 video game, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West , the popular anime series Dragon Ball and now Black Myth: Wukong.

How Journey to the West is Utilised in Black Myth: Wukong

black myth wukong zhu bajie

Black Myth: Wukong comes from Chinese developer Game Science and, as one of the first major AAA games out of China, it seems fitting the team chose to adapt one of the nation's most popular myths. Some reviewers have even described the game as "the God of War for Chinese mythology".

However, Black Myth: Wukong doesn't do a simple copy-and-paste job of Journey to the West . Instead, the story takes place after the events of the novel, following what happens to Sun Wukong after he achieved enlightenment.

In this narrative, Sun Wukong rejects immortality, which angers the Celestial Court and leads to the Monkey King being defeated and sealed in stone.

Before his demise, Sun Wukong splits his power into six relics which are hidden across China and players, as the Destined One, are tasked with recovering these items in an effort to free the legendary character.

Spread across six chapters, Black Myth: Wukong takes players on a journey where they encounter, recruit and battle many of the same characters from Journey to the West , such as Zhu Bajie, Yellow Wind Sage, Black Bear Guai and the Bull Demon King.

Similar to the Monkey King, the Destined One also wields a size-changing staff like Ruyi Jingu Bang and has the ability to cast spells and shapeshift into different beings.

So, while Black Myth: Wukong isn't an exact adaptation of Journey to the West , it is useful to know the basics of the classic story to get a more rounded understanding of what is happening in the game.

Black Myth: Wukong is available to play now on PC and PS5 .

How Diamondbacks share Chase Field with Green Day, Journey—it's concert season in Phoenix

Portrait of José M. Romero

It's concert season at Chase Field, right in the middle of what could be another run to the postseason for the Arizona Diamondbacks .

Def Leppard, Journey and Steve Miller Band rocked the stadium on Friday night, much of the available seating filled halfway through the opening performance. The three rock legends played many of their hits to an appreciative crowd that filled what would be the outfield for a baseball game, much of the lower level and up to the last row in the upper deck.

On Sept. 18, Green Day performs at Chase Field. There are two full days to set up for the show after Arizona's final game of a homestand on Sept. 15 and several more to get the field baseball-ready again before the Diamondbacks return from a two-city road trip.

"Capacity and downtown location make it an ideal spot," Diamondbacks president Derrick Hall said in an email interview with the Republic. "Additionally, we provide quick load-in and load-out without space restrictions and own our own flooring. Icing on the cake, depending on time of year, can have concerts under the stars."

In what has become an annual ritual, it's another year of big names for performances at Chase Field. The Diamondbacks and their events company, Arizona Diamondbacks Events and Entertainment, took over booking and promotion of concerts, along with stadium maintenance, from Maricopa County in a deal reached in May of 2018. Ever since — with 2020 and 2021 off due to the pandemic — the club has staged multiple concerts each year.

"It's just given us a tremendous opportunity to be incredibly creative and flexible with the ballpark and find different ways to use it, "said Michael Hilburn, vice president of event development & production for ADEE. "Really try to push this ballpark to be an event space 365 days a year. ... It frees us up to maximize the use of the ballpark. It's exciting. It's been awesome so far."

Comparing calendars and choosing a concert date

Many concert tours happen in the summer, and the Diamondbacks have to synch calendars when the team is away from home with the touring schedules of bands and artists. Hilburn said the booking work for next year has already begun since the 2025 Major League Baseball schedule has been released.

A music festival of some kind is on the horizon.

"We are more than open to hosting as many (concerts) as we can and will be creating our own annual music festivals," Hall said. "We definitely see concerts growing at Chase Field. We have been able to generate new revenues that we can reinvest in our stadium, and as our reputation continues to grow as a 'can’t-miss' venue through word of mouth and promoters, our opportunities will increase. We are landing huge headliners, and can sense a great deal of momentum and tailwinds."

The club couldn't have known that the baseball team would make a run to the World Series last year when it booked Morgan Wallen, Metallica, and Pink with Brandi Carlile. The Pink concert on Oct. 9 didn't have to be postponed or moved to another day even though the Diamondbacks were amid the National League Divisional Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers because Game 2 that day was in L.A.

That meant there was enough time to set up the stage and show infrastructure before the concert and execute the takedown of everything before Game 3 on Oct. 11.

The key to faster setup time is the turf field, installed in 2019. It's why the ADEE doesn't need more than a Diamondbacks' six- to 10-day road trip to install the concert infrastructure, have a night or two of shows, and then take it down in time for the next baseball homestand.

The B1K synthetic surface is designed specifically for baseball. Hilburn called it a "game changer" because the turf is flexible enough to quickly rise to ordinary playing level when the concert flooring is removed. It takes about a day to be ready for baseball.

"It was the right move for us to do in the desert, the amount of water we use to grow that (real) grass, the amount of sun that needs to be put on it that then heats the building," Hilburn said. "The other side of it, and the tremendous advantage of having it, has been what it has opened up for us on the non-baseball side. The ability to do these concerts and events in season without the harm of damaging natural grass and having to replace grass midseason. That has been completely removed from the equation."

Hilburn and his staff make it a point to attend a concert somewhere around the country featuring the bands booked for Chase Field sometime before they get to Arizona. The idea is to observe how the show goes, how the bands sound both with a crowd and in sound check and what the setup looks like.

For Journey/Def Leppard, Hilburn went to PNC Park in Pittsburgh last month.

"It just helps us be ready as a building, as a team, on the production side," Hilburn said. "Every tour kind of brings a different element to it. They have special effects or production components that we need to prepare for. It's a lot better than hearing from an email from somebody like "Oh, you can expect this when we come in.' Let's just put our own eyes on it and be ready for it."

Setting up Chase Field for the show

On Wednesday morning at Chase Field, the entire baseball field, except for the infield diamond and pitcher's mound, was covered with protective flooring, and the stage was in place, though not fully set up.

The transformation into a rock concert venue means covering the artificial turf playing surface to protect it and then modifying field access for concert-goers with floor seats. Temporary restrooms will be installed on the field, and the backstage area is the service level of the stadium, not including the home and visiting clubhouses at Chase Field.

In November, Chase will host a different kind of event for the first time: the Hondo Rodeo Fest. The event will feature three days of rodeo action followed by live musical performances from country stars, including Brooks & Dunn, Hank Williams Jr., and the Zac Brown Band.

The baseball season, including the World Series, will be over by then.

"It's going to be such a unique thing," Hilburn said. "The prospect of having, really, like the World Series of rodeo in here with some of the biggest names in the sport competing for a $1 million purse, followed up by some of the biggest names in country music each night for a concert, is going to be so awesome. And again, it just speaks to the flexibility that we have in this ballpark, that we can do anything."

Finding Success Starts with Finding Your Purpose

  • John Coleman

success is a journey book summary

It’s never too early — or too late — to ask the big questions.

Many people work their whole lives to achieve material success only to find their happiness and sense of purpose wanting when that success comes. They often spend their later years looking for purpose in their lives in order to feel a sense of meaning. Searching for meaning late in your life is a missed opportunity. Success without significance — purpose, service, and meaningful relationships — is not really success at all. It’s important to properly reflect on how you can live a life imbued intensely not just with the superficial trappings of “success” but with deep purpose and joy in all we do — starting now. Ask yourself:  What is the core purpose of my work and the ways in which it makes the world better? Who are the key relationships in my life, and how can I deepen them? What more can I do at work, at home, and in my community to serve others? How am I becoming better each day?

In 1995, Bob Buford wrote the bestselling book Halftime , which popularized the concept of “moving from success to significance” in the second half of life. Buford realized that many businesspeople work their whole lives to achieve material success only to find their happiness and sense of purpose wanting when that success comes. And he rightly encouraged those people to seek out meaning and impact in their later years.

What I Believe About Success

When will you be successful? If you’re like most people, what comes to mind is someday—somewhere off in the future, when you’ll suddenly wake up and think, “I made it! I’m a success!” That’s how most unsuccessful people see success: as something to strive for and hope to reach “someday.”

Each of us has a picture in mind of what we want our career to look like, our family to look like, and yes, from an early age we often conjure up images of the houses, cars, and things we would like to obtain. In many persons’ minds, success is something way off in the distance that they will run themselves ragged to get to – if they ever get to it at all.

At one time, I viewed success as a place where I would arrive. I defined it as the progressive realization of a predetermined, worthwhile goal. But over time, I realized that the definition falls short of the mark. It leads to “destination disease” – the belief that if we just arrive somewhere (e.g. attain a position, accomplish a goal, have a relationship with the right person), we will be successful.

But many years ago, I came to a different conclusion about success. All the traditional definitions either made success a destination to reach, or required some magic formula to obtain. I began to see success as a journey, an ongoing process of growth. And after over nearly fifty years of knowing successful people and studying the subject, this is the definition of success that I now embrace:

Success is…

Knowing your purpose in life,

Growing to reach your maximum potential, and

Sowing seeds that benefit others.

You can see by this definition why success is a journey rather than a destination. No matter how long you live or what you decide to do in life, you will never exhaust your capacity to grow toward your potential, nor will you run out of opportunities to help others. When you see success as a journey, then you never have the problem of trying to “arrive” at an elusive final destination. And you’ll never find yourself in a position where you’ve accomplished some final goal – only to discover that you’re still unfulfilled and searching for something else to do.

Another benefit of focusing on the journey of success instead of on arriving at a destination or achieving a goal is that you have the potential to become a success today . The very moment that you make the shift to finding your purpose, growing to your potential, and helping others, successful is something you are right now, not something you vaguely hope one day to be.

Let’s talk more about how to pursue each of the three aspects noted above.

Knowing Your Purpose

I believe that God created every person for a purpose. As psychologist Viktor Frankl said, “Everyone has his own specific vocation or mission in life. Everyone must carry out a concrete assignment that demands fulfillment. Therein he cannot be replaced, nor can his life be repeated. Thus everyone’s task is as unique as his specific opportunity to implement it.” Each of us has a purpose for which we were created. Our responsibility – and our greatest joy – is to identify it.

Finding our purpose requires us to seek to discover two things: our passion, and our giftedness. What is the deep desire set in your heart, the thing that sets your soul on fire? What makes you cry? What do you get most excited about? And what are you good at? No one else in the world has exactly the same gifts, talents, background, or future that you do.

Think about the unique mix of abilities you have, the resources available to you, your own personal history, and the opportunities around you. If you objectively identify these factors and discover the desire of your heart, you will have done a lot toward discovering your purpose in life.

Growing to Your Potential

Novelist H.G. Wells said that wealth, notoriety, place, and power are no measures of success whatsoever. The only true measure of success is the ratio between what we might have been and what we have become. In other words, success comes as the result of growing to our potential. It’s been said that our potential is God’s gift to us, and what we do with it is our gift to him.

We have nearly limitless potential, yet few ever try to reach it. Why? The answer lies in this: We can do anything, but we can’t do everything. Many people let everyone around them decide what their agenda is in life. As a result, they never really dedicate themselves to their purpose in life. They become a jack of all trades, master of none–rather than a jack of few trades, focused on one.

Reaching your potential requires focus. That’s why it’s so important for you to discover your purpose. Commitment to continual improvement is also key. Each day you can become a little bit better than you were yesterday.

Forget the past and focus on the future. That’s where your potential lies, ahead of you – no matter whether you’re eight, eighteen, forty-eight, or eighty. You still have room to improve yourself. You can become better tomorrow than you are today. As the Spanish proverb says, “He who does not look ahead remains behind.”

Sowing Seeds That Benefit Others

When you know your purpose in life and are growing to reach your maximum potential, you’re well on your way to being a success. But there’s one more important part to the success journey: helping others. Without that aspect, the journey can be a lonely and shallow experience.

Helping others is something you can do right here, right now, whether it’s spending more time with your family, developing an employee who shows potential, helping people in the community, or simply putting your own desires on hold for the sake of your team at work. The key is to link your purpose with your desire to help others.

Entertainer Danny Thomas said, “All of us are born for a reason, but all of us don’t discover why. Success in life has nothing to do with what you gain in life or accomplish for yourself. It’s what you do for others.”

The success journey will not look the same for everyone, because the picture of success is different for every person. What doesn’t change are the principles used to take the journey. They can be applied at home, in school, at the office, on the ball field, and in church. It doesn’t matter where you are now. You can learn and apply these ideas. You can be successful today.

Recently I have been thinking a lot about this very topic. As a new college student who is also reaching the grand end of High School, what my grand purpose in life is and my success throughout my studies are a constant thought. Reading this passage made me realize I fall vicitim to ” Destination Disease” as John Maxwell states is ” The belief that if we just arrive somewhere (e.g. attain a position, accomplish goal, have a relationship with the right person ), we will be successful.” When reading John’s definition of success in comparison tony own. Which falls under the categories of “Destination Disease” I came to a realization that It is time for me to start viewing my success as a journey.

When I got up this morning and started to get myself together and open up my computer, I was not that excited to start my homework for school, but as I started listening to my instructor and now reading this passage, I woke up! I’ve been pausing and reflecting already. The wheels in my head are turning and I’m fully engaged. I also fall into the group of people who think of success as if there is a deadline and as I get older it’s almost been pressuring as I reflect on life, I’ve been telling myself you need to open up and move forward there is more to life you need to accomplish if you want to be successful, not only for myself but my family. Reading on this, is almost reassuring that I’m still going in the right direction and I will always need to be reaching for future goals in life to continue to be successful.

7 Steps to Achieving Success in the Business of Life

First of all, what is a success? Is it a destination or a journey? Every person understands life differently, but the key elements of success remain exactly the same.

We outline the book in a nutshell and describe the features for reaching success: try, fail, change your plan.

Who Should Read “Success Is a Journey”? And Why?

In the 21 st century, any person can find various self-help guide books, conveying unique messages. The “magic” lies within the choice. It is not easy to pick the perfect one for you, the one competent enough to lift you up, motivate and the way you function. What keeps us down? It is not the environment; our ego is responsible for that.

“ Success is a Journey ” is a book targeted for the entire world, there are no discriminations or prejudices. The truth is bitter; the fact is that you are the creator of everything, a perfect vision must be aimed towards productiveness, happiness, and self-development .

About Jeffrey J. Mayer

Jeffrey J. Mayer

As a writer, Mayer has written many books, which changed people’s lives like Time Management for Dummies ; If You Haven’t Got the Time to Do It Right, When Will You Find the Time to Do It; Success is a Journey . Despite working as a writer, Mayer is also the founder of one consulting company called Mayer Enterprises.

“Success Is a Journey Summary”

There are varieties of key factors and helpful tips that are essential to become a successful individual . How to recognize which person has the capacity of becoming successful in life? It is simple, look for those stubborn and modest people who never give up.

You shouldn’t quit if you wish to earn the privilege to be among those persons. If something is holding them back, they’ll avoid complaining or whining. A true winner is aware that without difficulties in life he/she cannot dig deep to find what lies beneath the self-made ego. Success also depends on your expectations.

What you take yourself to be? Are you worthy? Do you have high hopes? By answering these questions, you can be the master of your life , and the judge of your personal success and accomplishments.

The goal is not to be faultless, don’t pursue perfection in whatever you do, you are not a robot, the goal should be an integral part of real dedication and openness to learn and try as hard as possible. Learn from every experience, expand your knowledge and progress through life. Many motivators and entrepreneurs advise everyone to write their goals down, make a list and start fulfilling them.

However, we have one planet but millions of worlds (in the human mind), the same goes for millions of criteria for measuring success. Measuring success on a day-to-day-basis and week-to-week-basis is useful. Established brands would probably prefer to use a quarter-to-quarter or yearly measurement system; it all depends on company’s requirements.

Success is the end result of previous dedication and hard work; you have to try harder than your competitors if you want to feel the taste of success. Some people may say: It is based on “expanding and developing” and “getting ready for bigger and bigger challenges in life .”

Being an all-around master is a scenario that doesn’t even occur in movies. It would be the best if you are able to underline your potential strengths and use them to avoid the taste of failure. Nevertheless, you have to be prepared for false steps as well, since losing is a part of the “game of life.”

Jeffrey J. Mayer presents not one but series of useful techniques, management principles, and various guidelines capable of getting the best out of you. If you are looking for a book with a smooth flow targeted for any individual involved in any business; this is the right one for you.

According to Jeffery, people have to start believing in themselves, raise their expectations and never blame anyone for their emotional or professional breakdowns. It is evident that challenges would emerge, but that is a part of the game. He doesn’t exaggerate things, he speaks about real life-situations and how to act if you find yourself in such.

Key Lessons from “Success is a Journey

  •       Follow your dreams not your obsessions
  •       The difference between negative and positive thinking
  •       If you crave for success, you have to want it bad enough

Follow your dreams not your obsessions

In pursuance of success, a person vision ought to be supported by a well-defined plan or a strategy that acts as a guide. This passion should burst into flames if an individual wants to have or achieve something.

It must not be an obsession because if you are obsessed with someone or something, you’ll feel trapped and resistant towards change.

Have Fun along the way

It may sound weird, but if you are not having a good time along the way you haven’t picked the right dream.

If you feel suffocated by your job or work environment, then you should quit immediately. A successful person must be happy and satisfied with its life, not just rich.

If you crave for success, you have to want it bad enough

Perhaps, the most important of all principles is having a strong desire and energy pointed directly towards the ultimate goal. Gradually, this desire will turn into action. For instance; Dedicated people don’t have the word “no” in their vocabulary.

Our Critical Review

The lack of originality is perhaps the greatest flaw that certain critics refer to. Certainly, Jeffrey talks about many well-worn platitudes about success, which sometimes sound too straightforward and obvious.

However, don’t let that discourage you, we recommend this book to owners, executives, and manager ready to brush up some of their management skills.

John Maxwell: Success or Significance

Oura - Your Success is in Your Hands

Do you know the difference between success and significance? I know a lot of people who believe they are successful because they have everything they want. They have added value to themselves. But I believe significance comes when you add value to others—and you can’t have true success without significance. I came to this conclusion while working on my book Your Road Map for Success , in which I wanted to define success. I habitually file good quotes and stories I come across, and then reference them when writing a book. In preparation for the book, I pulled out every quote I ever filed—137 quotes to be exact—on the topic of success. I laid them out on the table and carefully thought through them. After six months I came to understand that success is:

knowing your purpose in life, growing to your maximum potential sowing seeds that benefit others.

The big question is: Once you’ve learned something, do you have a heart to share it with others, or do you hold it for yourself? Success is indeed a journey, but if you stop at adding value to yourself, you miss the reward of significance. Here are a few of my observations about the journey to significance. This journey takes time. It is a process that requires patience and commitment. Success is usually the steppingstone to significance. There has to be a certain amount of success in people’s lives before they are willing to take the step to significance, where they ask themselves, “What else is there in life beyond professional and monetary success?” Pursuing significance takes us out of our comfort zone. Significance is not attainable in a natural way. Let me describe to you the difference of what I think natural and unnatural is: I don’t think you glide or fall into significance. You don’t wake up one day and say to yourself, “I’m significant.” Significance takes us out of comfortable territory into uncomfortable territory. Rusty Rustenbach, in his pastoral article Giving Yourself Away , hits this topic out of the park. He writes, “You and I live in an age when only a rare minority of individuals desire to spend their lives in pursuit of objectives which are bigger than they are. In our age, for most people, when they die it will be as though they never lived.” Once significance is sensed, nothing else will satisfy. I think Katherine Graham put it best: “To love what you do and feel that it matters—how could anything be more fun?” I know a lot of people who love what they do but don’t feel it matters much. And I know some people who don’t love what they do but do feel it matters. But when you can love what you do and feel that it is making a difference in the lives of others, now you have the right combination.

Five Differences Between Success and Significance   1. Motives

With success, my motives may be selfish; with significance, my motives cannot be selfish. Significance and selfishness are incompatible. When I was a young pastor, I would go to a church and look at my laypeople, and my first thought—as wrong as it was—was, What can they do to help me? As I matured, it turned around where I would think, What can I do to help them? In my experience, motives matter because: •    Selfish people seldom find significance. •    When you help others, you help yourself. When you help yourself, you may not help others. •    As Solomon wrote in Proverbs 23:7, “As [a man] thinketh in his heart, so is he.”

2. Influence

With success, my influence is limited; with significance, my influence is unlimited. Here’s an anonymous quote I found that will help illustrate: “When you influence a child, you influence a life. When you influence a father, you influence a family. When you influence a leader, you influence all who look to him or her for leadership.”

Success can last a lifetime; significance can last several lifetimes. People who desire significance value time. They evaluate what they do with their time, and they invest their time wisely. M. Scott Peck said, “Until you value yourself, you won’t value your time. Until you value your time, you will not do anything with it.”

Success asks, “How can I add value to myself?” Significance asks, “How can I add value to others?” My evolution from selfishness to significance went something like this: What can others do for me? → What can I do for myself? → What can I do for others? → What can I do with others, for others?

If I pursue success, my joy is the result of my success; if I pursue significance, my joy is the result of others’ success. Very frequently I’m asked what motivates me. And I tell you, I crossed the line a few years ago where the success of other people is a higher reward to me than my own success. Why is it so rewarding for me to add value to others? First, it’s my calling. Second, it’s so productive to get beyond myself and to help people grow and develop. And third, it’s rewarding for me because it pleases God.

Editorial Rating

The rating – what does it mean.

At getAbstract, we summarize books* that help people understand the world and make it better. Whatever we select for our library has to excel in one or the other of these two core criteria:

Enlightening – You’ll learn things that will inform and improve your decisions.

Helpful – You’ll take-away practical advice that will help you get better at what you do.

We rate each piece of content on a scale of 1–10 with regard to these two core criteria. Our rating helps you sort the titles on your reading list from solid (5) to brilliant (10). Books we rate below 5 won’t be summarized. Here's what the ratings mean:

10 – Brilliant. A helpful and/or enlightening book that, in addition to meeting the highest standards in all pertinent aspects, stands out even among the best. Often an instant classic and must-read for everyone. 9 – Superb. A helpful and/or enlightening book that is extremely well rounded, has many strengths and no shortcomings worth mentioning. 8 – Very good. A helpful and/or enlightening book that has a substantial number of outstanding qualities without excelling across the board, e.g. presents the latest findings in a topical field and is written by a renowned expert but lacks a bit in style. 7 – Good. A helpful and/or enlightening book that combines two or more noteworthy strengths, e.g. contains uncommonly novel ideas and presents them in an engaging manner. 6 – Notable. A helpful and/or enlightening book that stands out by at least one aspect, e.g. is particularly well structured. 5 – Solid. A helpful and/or enlightening book, in spite of its obvious shortcomings. For instance, it may offer decent advice in some areas while being repetitive or unremarkable in others.

*getAbstract is summarizing much more than books. We look at every kind of content that may matter to our audience: books, but also articles, reports, videos and podcasts. What we say here about books applies to all formats we cover.

  • Well Structured
  • For Beginners

While the rating tells you how good a book is according to our two core criteria, it says nothing about its particular defining features. Therefore, we use a set of 20 qualities to characterize each book by its strengths:

Applicable – You’ll get advice that can be directly applied in the workplace or in everyday situations. Analytical – You’ll understand the inner workings of the subject matter. Background – You’ll get contextual knowledge as a frame for informed action or analysis. Bold – You’ll find arguments that may break with predominant views. Comprehensive – You’ll find every aspect of the subject matter covered. Concrete Examples – You’ll get practical advice illustrated with examples of real-world applications or anecdotes. Controversial – You’ll be confronted with strongly debated opinions. Eloquent – You’ll enjoy a masterfully written or presented text. Engaging – You’ll read or watch this all the way through the end. Eye opening – You’ll be offered highly surprising insights. For beginners – You’ll find this to be a good primer if you’re a learner with little or no prior experience/knowledge. For experts – You’ll get the higher-level knowledge/instructions you need as an expert. Hot Topic – You’ll find yourself in the middle of a highly debated issue. Innovative – You can expect some truly fresh ideas and insights on brand-new products or trends. Insider’s take – You’ll have the privilege of learning from someone who knows her or his topic inside-out. Inspiring – You’ll want to put into practice what you’ve read immediately. Overview – You’ll get a broad treatment of the subject matter, mentioning all its major aspects. Scientific – You’ll get facts and figures grounded in scientific research. Visionary – You’ll get a glimpse of the future and what it might mean for you. Well structured – You’ll find this to be particularly well organized to support its reception or application.

Recommendation

A popular leadership speaker and prolific author, John C. Maxwell has a great deal of experience in the process of personal growth, and he communicates it well. This book, published as The Success Journey in 1977, is a useful step-by-step guide to plotting your journey to success, right down to the thoughtful exercises at the end of each chapter. Maxwell does a nice job of mixing the personal and professional sides of success and encouraging you to redefine it. His definition is that success is following your true purpose and living up to your dreams and potential, rather than just accumulating wealth and possessions. The book is quite a fast read – probably because a good portion of it is devoted to quoting others – and its evangelical tone may not appeal to all readers. Maxwell also makes frequent use of catchphrases, which help fill a page but say little. getAbstract recommends this book to ambitious individuals looking for guidance on creating and following a workable, actionable life plan.

Know Where You Are Going

Before you begin your journey toward success, you must have a definition of what it takes to be truly successful. Many people have the wrong definition. They think that success comes in the form of money or power, achievements or possessions; others think that success is the pursuit of happiness, though their quest for it makes them continually miserable. Success is not a destination; it is a process. Success comes from having a mission in life and knowing how to grow in order to fulfill it.

One of the first steps in embarking on your journey to success is to determine the direction in which you are going. You must have a dream to drive you, motivate you, add meaning to your life and ultimately determine your destiny. How do you develop a dream? First examine your thoughts and focus on the hopes you think about most often. You must be confident that you can fulfill your goals. Cast aside your fear of failing. Use your creativity and “constructive discontent” to your advantage in the development of your dreams. Your vision requires dedication and perseverance. Many people lose sight of their objectives and let their dreams slide away. Share...
