Hard Rock Stadium

By Edward de la Fuente

Our guide to Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, includes information on events, tickets, parking, public transportation, nearby hotels and restaurants, seating and more. Read on to find out how to get the most out of your gameday experience.

For a 30-year-old stadium that has seen more than its fair share of major sports moments, the football venue in Miami now known as Hard Rock Stadium — the longtime home of the Miami Dolphins — has witnessed quite a bit of change.

Originally known as Joe Robbie Stadium, it has sported eight different names thanks to a revolving door of corporate naming sponsors, from the plain (Dolphin Stadium) to the ludicrous (Land Shark Stadium).

It went from a state-of-the-art football-only venue to a multipurpose football/baseball stadium when the Florida Marlins moved in for the 1993 season, and then back again after the Marlins moved on to their own ballpark, now known as LoanDepot Park .

And it has undergone a few renovations, but none more dramatic than the  two-year refurbishment it underwent prior to the 2016 season, when seats were removed from all four corners of the upper seating bowl in favor of four large videoboards; every seat was replaced, the color going from orange to aqua; and a massive canopy was installed over the seating area to protect the majority of fans in case of inclement weather or incessant sunshine (both of which Miami frequently has).

The venue received a new name, Hard Rock Stadium, to go along with all the new bells and whistles. In addition to its usual duties as the home of the Dolphins, the University of Miami Hurricanes and the Orange Bowl, it hosted its sixth Super Bowl in 2020.

And the list of big-time events it has staged is long, from the World Series to college football’s BCS Championship, and from the Pro Bowl to WrestleMania.

For a stadium with so much history in the NFL, college football and MLB, there’s still more memories yet to be made.

Getting to Hard Rock Stadium

Miami is a notoriously car-dependent area, and thus if you’re going to a game at Hard Rock Stadium you probably should have a car. The stadium is not in Miami proper but rather in Miami Gardens , a suburb nestled between Miami and Fort Lauderdale; from downtown Miami the stadium is about 15 miles away.

The easiest route to the stadium is via Florida’s Turnpike, a north-south toll road that connects with Interstate 95 just south of the stadium site. After passing through the stadium toll plaza, which every car that exits Florida’s Turnpike must do, turn right onto NW 199th Street, aka Dan Marino Boulevard, and the stadium will be on the right (but by then you’ll already know that, since it will be clearly visible).

If you’re without a car, there is a transit alternative in the form of an express shuttle that departs Hard Rock Stadium following games and runs to several points around South Florida, including downtown Miami, South Beach and Fort Lauderdale.

Riders pay $10 each and can catch the shuttle from Lot 14 east of the venue. (If you need transport to the stadium before the event, you’ll need to find a taxi or rideshare.) This might be a more desirable option to get to Hard Rock Stadium if you’re visiting South Florida and staying in a hotel in a popular district.

Parking at Hard Rock Stadium

Hard Rock Stadium is surrounded on all sides by a massive parking lot , divided into numbered and color-coded portions. Most of the parking areas closest to the venue itself are permit-only; however, there are cash lots on the west, east and south sides. As of the 2020 season, it cost $50 to park in a cash lot;  advance purchase options are available.

Visitors on a budget have a couple alternative options when parking at Hard Rock Stadium. First, anyone driving a car equipped with a SunPass toll transponder can save $15 off the cash rate by using the transponder to pay for the parking fee.

This offer is good only at lots designated with a “SunPass Plus” sign — look for the Yellow lots on the south side of NW 199th Street, and to your left as you exit the turnpike. There is an additional SunPass lot past the turnpike overpass on 199th.

Additionally, there are two free parking lots located along NW 27th Avenue, north of the Hard Rock Stadium grounds. Head west on 199th Street, then turn right on 27th, cross over the canal that runs just north of the stadium, and look out for the lots on the left side. From these parking lots, it’s a 15-minute walk to Hard Rock Stadium.

Things to do around Hard Rock Stadium

You might be surprised to find out that for all the high-profile events Hard Rock Stadium holds, there’s little in the way of entertainment surrounding it — few restaurants, hotels and retail that seem to be the hallmark of the event experience these days.

With such a large parking lot surrounding the stadium, though, you’re gonna get quite the tailgate scene. There’s a lot of space to move around and set up your pregame party, even if there are a few restrictions.

If you’re staying in a hotel outside the immediate vicinity and looking for a sports bar or restaurant-type atmosphere, you’re best off finding that near where you’re staying and then heading to Hard Rock Stadium when you’re ready.

Meanwhile, the Dolphins do typically hold pregame parties of their own outside the stadium gates, complete with games, live music and more. Look for organized parties to take place in the plazas on the south or east sides of the stadium.

If you’d rather venture out on your own, your choices are limited in the immediate stadium area, which is largely residential. There are a few strip malls along NW 27th Avenue west of the stadium, where you can find a Denny’s and a Pollo Tropical , among other eateries.

There’s also a Walmart Supercenter on the southeast corner of 27th and 199th Street, but parking is restricted for football fans and tailgating is forbidden.

The Calder Race Course and adjoining casino are a few blocks to the north, as well. Fans are permitted to use the parking lot there for free and then walk to Hard Rock Stadium, a distance of about 1¼ miles. The Stadium Hotel, the closest established hotel to Hard Rock Stadium, is also in this area.

Watching a game at Hard Rock Stadium

From the outside, Hard Rock Stadium shows a little bit of its age, in the form of its concrete edifice and the set of circular ramps at each corner — typically a tell-tale sign that the venue was built in the 1980s or earlier.

Other than that, though, the stadium’s overseers have done a good job keeping the building up to date over the years, giant renovation or not, with the addition of things like a Dolphins Hall of Fame and statues of one-time team owner Joe Robbie, legendary coach Don Shula and Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino.

Inside, the more recent improvements should be more evident, in both decor and creature comforts. In addition to the large concourses that were already present, Hard Rock Stadium now boasts bar and standing-room areas underneath the four videoboards in the upper seating bowl. The number of seats in the upper tier were reduced drastically to make room for those videoboards, with seating removed in the less desirable corner areas.

The shade canopy, the most obvious product of the recent renovation, provides the biggest boon to fans. Beforehand, most of Hard Rock Stadium’s seating bowl was exposed to the elements, a fact fans who attended Marlins games at the stadium knew all too well.

Now, a majority of the crowd is shaded during afternoon games, and shelter is available in the event of a sudden storm that South Florida often receives. However, note that shading is not the case for the lower seating bowl on Hard Rock Stadium’s north side (sections 114-122) — this area can still receive the brunt of sunlight during early-afternoon games, which can make for an uncomfortable environment, especially early in the season.

Unsurprisingly in the home of South Beach, luxury amenities are available to fans who are willing to shell out a little extra for a VIP experience. Hard Rock Stadium’s club seating levels are filled with exclusive clubs and bar areas that offer the velvet rope experience, and suite boxes are fitted with theater seats in addition to the food and drink service.

The most conspicuous luxury feature at Hard Rock Stadium are the “72 Club Living Room Boxes” that include wide, cushioned seating and legroom, TVs and coffee table-like shelving and in-seat service — sort of like being at a Las Vegas sportsbook, except there’s a live game in front of you. These boxes are stationed along each 35-yard line on the stadium’s south side.

Food and drink at Hard Rock Stadium

The stadium’s concessions options have been undergoing an overhaul in recent years as well, with the introduction of a handful of local restaurants. Among the stands worth checking out:

  • Popular Little Havana restaurant Versailles peddles its celebrated Cuban sandwiches;
  • Fuku (run by celebrity chef David Chang) sells fried chicken sandwiches;
  • Shula Burger (popular with Dolphins fans for obvious reasons) offers a steakhouse-style burger;
  • and Grown , owned by Sharon Allen (wife of former Miami Heat guard Ray Allen) sells organic dishes such as salmon burgers and free-range rotisserie chicken.

If you’re looking for a unique-to-South Florida beer selection among the many choices at Hard Rock Stadium, look for one of several beers offered by J. Wakefield Brewing, based in the Wynwood section of Miami. El Jefe , a coconut-based Hefeweizen, is a popular option.

Beyond Football: Hard Rock Stadium's Diverse Lineup of Events

In 2022, Hard Rock Stadium was the site of Miami’s first Formula One race, building a 19-turn track with 11 grandstands in the middle of the parking lot. Organizers even created a makeshift “marina” where party yachts sat on the water as spectators watched the race. The event will return in 2023 and is already one of the most anticipated events on the Formula One circuit.

During March, Hard Rock Stadium hosts the biggest names in men’s and women’s tennis at the annual Miami Open , the biggest tournament outside the four Grand Slams. Thirty courts cover the tennis campus, and spectators wander among them watching their favorite players from just a few rows away. Fans also enjoy Champagne bars, day clubs, sushi restaurants and shaded lounge areas. Top matches take place on Center Court inside the stadium.

Unforgettable Performances at Hard Rock Stadium

But Hard Rock Stadium isn’t just a place for sports. The biggest concerts in the world also play here, including Bad Bunny’s shows during the summer of 2022. Previous acts have included the Rolling Stones, U2, Beyonce and Jay-Z, and Madonna. Hard Rock Stadium hosts the annual Rolling Loud Music Festival , which features hip-hop’s brightest stars. Jazz in the Gardens brings the biggest names in jazz and R&B to Miami Gardens in March.

Gourmet Delights: Culinary Adventures at Hard Rock Stadium

The Hard Rock in-stadium experience includes full liquor bars in each corner, as well as craft beer bars with a massive selection of local brews. You’ll find all the flavors of Miami in the concourse, too, whether it’s Cuban food from landmark restaurant Versailles or mojo-roasted chicken from Pollo Tropical. Argentinian specialties such as empanadas and grilled meats are available at Novecento, and local legend Shula Burger also has locations inside the stadium.

This service is designed to make game day more convenient and enjoyable for fans.

LEED Gold Certification For Sustainability Efforts

This recognition highlights the stadium's commitment to environmental stewardship through various green initiatives, including removing 99.4 percent of single-use plastic in food and beverage operations and using biodigesters to redirect waste from landfills. This makes the Hard Rock Stadium 1 of 6 NFL stadiums that have received a Gold or higher certification. South Florida Motorsports also achieved the highest rating possible for best practices in environmental management, the FIA Three-Star Environmental Accreditation. It is now the sole Formula 1 location in the United States to receive this rating. Hard Rock Stadium bag policy

Hard Rock Stadium bag policy

The Hard Rock Stadium bag policy is very clear about which items are allowed inside the stadium for events. You can bring in one clear vinyl or plastic bag that is 12” x 6” x 12”. This bag can also be a Ziploc-style bag.

You might also be allowed to bring in a small clutch or purse that is about the size of your hand. If you have diaper bags or other kinds of medical bags, these will need to be cleared by gate personnel and will require a search. They might not be allowed to be brought in if they are not being used for these purposes.

Smartphones, binoculars, and cameras are permitted, but there are no exceptions to the bag rule without prior arrangements. If you need to check a bag at the gate, the fee is $15, and there are no outside lockers. You will be handing off your items to staff to keep them safe during the event. This is why working with Bounce for your luggage storage needs is far preferable to having to store items at the last moment at the gate.

Hard Rock Stadium food policy

The Hard Rock Stadium food policy is simple and easy to follow. No outside food is permitted unless it’s needed for medical reasons. There are many, many restaurants to choose from inside the venue, and even people with food allergies or dietary restrictions will be able to eat a meal here.

Cash is not accepted inside the stadium to pay for food, so make sure that you have other forms of payment with you. You can also convert your cash to prepaid VISA gift cards at set locations around the stadium.

Guests are allowed to buy two alcoholic drinks at one time. Alcohol sales cease near the end of games. Alcohol from outside the stadium may not be brought in with guests. You are allowed to use mobile ordering within the stadium so that you can eat at your seat.

How to get to Hard Rock Stadium

Hard Rock Stadium transportation

If you are worried about how to get to Hard Rock Stadium, this info will help. Taxis are allowed to drop off and pick up at Gate 4. Rideshare is required to pick up and drop off at Lot 42 on NW 27th Ave . This lot is a 20-minute walk away from the stadium, so you will need to plan for this part of your trip in advance.

Sunpass allows stadium goers to use “easy pay” to get into the parking lots around the stadium. This system also offers a discounted parking rate for holders of these passes. There is a parking hotline if you have questions, or you can email the stadium to find out what your best options will be for things like accessibility parking.

There is no public transit that takes you to the stadium, so you will need to plan to drive or use another form of transportation.

Hard Rock Stadium camera policy

Video cameras, monopods, tripods, and selfie sticks are prohibited inside the stadium per the Hard Rock Stadium camera policy. You can bring in personal devices like cell phones, but you will not be allowed to record for professional purposes. You also must refrain from taking videos or capturing photos in a way that impedes other people from enjoying the game.

Anyone who is interfering with the progress of a game will be ejected from the game without re-entry and without a refund of the cost of their ticket.

Hard Rock Stadium rules

Hard Rock Stadium rules

Hard Rock Stadium policies do not condone or allow illegal, disruptive, or irresponsible behavior from any ticketed guest inside the stadium. All guests are required to follow stadium rules and comply with the requests and instructions of security personnel. Anyone who is not willing or able to comply with the rules will be removed from the game without re-entry.

The gates of the stadium open four hours before kick-off for Miami Dolphins games. The Green Lot parking gates are open for five hours before kickoff m(ideal for tailgating). All other lots are open four hours prior to kick-off.

Stadium gates do not open for access to your seats until two hours before kick-off. Tailgating is allowed in various lots around the stadium. You will need a valid parking pass to be allowed to tailgate. No beer kegs are allowed on the grounds, and no box trucks are permitted. No open fires are allowed, but grilling equipment can be used to prepare food in parking areas prior to kick-off.

Hard Rock Stadium is a very fun place to head to if you want to catch an NFL game or another event during your trip. This stadium has clear rules, and it is easy to have a great time on the grounds of the stadium. Make sure that you get your luggage and personal possessions stored safely with Bounce before you head to the stadium. Having fun on gameday means being prepared to walk right into the stadium and make the most of your much-anticipated event. Plus, then it’s so much easier to head out after the game to experience some of Miami’s iconic nightlife , including some fantastic rooftop bars .

Miami Dolphins rally past Jacksonville Jaguars 20-17 in home opener

Updated on: September 8, 2024 / 5:36 PM EDT / AP

Jason Sanders nailed a 52-yard field goal as time expired, and the Miami Dolphins  rallied past the Jacksonville Jaguars 20-17 on Sunday to win their fourth straight season opener.

Fresh off a big offseason payday, Tua Tagovailoa threw for 336 yards and a touchdown and led Miami on an 8-play, 31-yard drive over the final 2:09.

Tyreek Hill  started the comeback with an  80-yard touchdown catch that sparked Miami's sluggish offense in the third quarter and got the Dolphins within 17-14. After the score, Hill placed his hands behind his back as if to simulate being handcuffed, hours after he was placed facedown and handcuffed on a street by Miami-Dade Police officers after being stopped for a traffic violation near Hard Rock Stadium.

Hill finished with seven catches for 130 yards. Devon Achane had seven catches for 75 yards and ran for 25 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.

Sanders tied the game with a 36-yard field goal with 4:22 left, and the Dolphins' defense stepped up from there, sacking Trevor Lawrence on consecutive plays to set up Tagovailoa for the winning drive.

Lawrence, who also signed a big contract extension in the offseason, completed 12 of 21 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown. Tank Bigsby had 73 yards on 12 carries.

Rookie receiver Brian Thomas Jr. had a 14-yard touchdown catch and drew a pass-interference call on cornerback Jalen Ramsey — who had been listed as questionable with a hamstring injury — on Jacksonville's first touchdown drive. The play set up Jacksonville at the 1-yard line and Travis Etienne ran it in from there.

Etienne had the ball punched from his grasp by Dolphins safety Jevon Holland just before crossing the goal line in the third. Miami scored one play later when Tagovailoa found a streaking Hill, who outran two Jaguars defenders into the end zone.

After the Dolphins got a fourth-down stop on Jacksonville's next drive, Sanders missed a 42-yard field goal that would have tied it.

Achane had a 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, but besides that, the opening half of the season was mostly a dud for the Dolphins, who were expected to be as good or better offensively after bringing back most of the weapons from a unit that led the NFL in total yards in 2023.

Miami turned the ball over on downs twice and punted four times before Hill's touchdown.

Jaylen Waddle had five receptions for 108 yards, including a 63-yard catch that set up Miami at the Jacksonville 26 while trailing by 10. Miami went backward for three straight plays, though, and Tagovailoa took a third-down sack that knocked the Dolphins out of field goal range.

Jaguars: CB Tyson Campbell left with a hamstring injury in the fourth.

Dolphins: Waddle was evaluated for a concussion after taking a hard hit in the first half but returned a couple of plays later. ... LB David Long left in the third quarter with a hand injury but returned.

Miami-Dade officer involved in detaining Tyreek Hill is placed on administrative duty

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill speaks during an NFL football post game news conference, Sunday, Sept. 8, 2024, in Miami Gardens, Fla. The Dolphins defeated the Jaguars 20-17.

A Miami-Dade police officer has been placed on administrative leave after Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was handcuffed and detained by police Sunday, hours before the team played against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Video circulating online appears to show four officers surrounding Hill as he is in handcuffs. Hill is lying on the ground while one of the officers has a knee on his back. Another video shows an officer approaching Hill quickly and Hill falling to the ground, though the view is partially obstructed.

Hill was pulled over about one block from the Hard Rock Stadium, where the Dolphins play, according to the team. He received a citation for reckless driving and driving without a license, said Drew Rosenhaus, Hill’s agent.

After the game, Hill put a positive spin on the incident.

“Obviously, everybody has bad apples in every situation, so I want to be able to use this platform to figure out a way to flip this and make it a positive on both ends — on my end, and then also Miami-Dade — so that way we can team together and do something positive for the community, cause that’s what it’s all about,” he said in a postgame interview. Hill added that he has respect for police officers and wants to be one someday.

Hill said he still does not know why he was placed in handcuffs.

“I’m not going to give you a version that I still don't know what happened,” he said. “But I do want to be able to use this platform to say, ‘What if I wasn't Tyreek Hill?’”

He added, “I wasn’t disrespectful ‘cause my mom didn’t raise me that way. Didn’t cuss, didn’t do none of that.”

The Miami-Dade police department will be reviewing body camera footage of the incident, Director Stephanie Daniels said on X.

“I’m committed to transparency and accountability to the community with any situation involving my officers,” she said.

Hill said he felt alone in the moment and was fortunate that his teammates, Calais Campbell and Jonnu Smith, showed up and tried to deescalate the situation.

Campbell, a defensive tackle, said he was driving to the stadium and saw Hill in handcuffs. When he got out of his car to intervene, he was handcuffed as well, he said.

“I didn’t understand what the issue was, but for him to put handcuffs on me, I felt some kind of way. But that just goes to show you our resilience, though,” Campbell said. “We didn’t let that stop us, we just got back in line, got focused again, and went out there and played a good football game. But that definitely was a interesting way to start a ball game.”

The Dolphins went on to defeat the Jaguars 20-17. Hill finished with seven catches and 130 yards. After an 80-yard touchdown reception, Hill appeared to pretend to be handcuffed during an endzone celebration. Copyright 2024 NPR
