Train Concert Setlist Info

The song list for a Train show has only gotten harder to map out as the band continues to explore every corner of their catalog and more. On their 2022 AM Gold Tour, Train began putting a new spin on many of their biggest hits, blending covers of Steve Miller Band ’s “The Joker” with “Meet Virginia,” The Beatles’ “Hey Jude” with “Drive By” and Redbone’s “Come and Get Your Love” with “Hey, Soul Sister.”

However, no matter how unpredictable the journey of a Train live show becomes, all roads still lead to the same, satisfying conclusion: “Drops of Jupiter.” The 2001 smash single remains as the band’s trusty concert closer in 2024. Find an average Train setlist from their Summer Road Trip tour below.

Train’s Summer Road Trip 2024 Setlist:

11 Beautiful Vintage Train Rides In The U.S.

train tour history

  • Activities and Interests

  • United States

Climb aboard for a trip back in time with a ride along the rails on a vintage train. Once the transportation of the future, trains replaced covered wagons to take people west and ended the need for the Pony Express. A victim of modernization itself, passenger trains have been replaced by cars and airplanes. Today, riding a train offers a relaxing, fun, nostalgic experience while offering beautiful scenery.

My family has always enjoyed touring transportation museums and enjoying rides aboard so-called iron horses. Here’s a look at some of the best vintage train rides across America.

1. 1880 Train, Hill City, South Dakota

The Black Hills of South Dakota have long been cherished for their natural beauty. However, when gold was discovered in the 1870s, it set off a series of events that led to the forced removal of Native Americans, who had been promised the land because of its cultural significance. As the area developed, a railroad was constructed, running from Keystone to points in the Hills. Today, you can take in the sights of the old lumber and gold mining operations as you travel almost 10 miles from Hill City to Keystone aboard the 1880 Train . You’ll travel through a beautiful forest and open mountainside. The trip even includes a steep hill climb. Your ride aboard the steam engine-led train includes your choice of passenger car, from an enclosed car with cushioned seats or wooden benches with open windows. The 1880 Train offers round-trip and one-way rides between Hill City and Keystone. You can catch the train from either city’s train depot.

Pro Tip: The 1880 Train runs the trails from mid-May until mid-October.

North Shore Scenic Railroad.

2. North Shore Scenic Railroad, Duluth, Minnesota

Your trip along Lake Superior aboard the North Shore Scenic Railroad begins with a self-guided tour through the Lake Superior Railroad Museum, which offers a look at the region’s rail history. Once aboard the train, you can sit in enclosed cars with individual seats or take in the views from an open-air car with bench seats. As you travel along the north shore, you’ll be a few feet from Lake Superior, which offers amazing views of an ocean-sized Great Lake. A narrator relives the region’s history as you travel through wooded areas as well as small, picturesque communities en route to Two Harbors, a scenic lakeside town. North Shore Scenic Railroad offers a variety of trips along its 28-mile route.

Pro Tip: The North Shore Scenic Railroad rides the rails mid-May through October.

3. Great Smoky Mountains Railway, Bryson City, North Carolina

Explore western North Carolina aboard a train powered by steam or diesel on the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad . Hop aboard a comfortable, enclosed dining car and enjoy a delicious meal as you travel through the Nantahala Gorge or beautiful forests and as you pass through the Cowee Tunnel en route to Dillsboro, a historic town where you can do a little sightseeing or enjoy a meal. Your ride on the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad can also be experienced from an open-air car.

Editor’s Note: For additional Smoky Mountain inspiration, consider our picks for eight beautiful smoky mountain hiking trails here .

Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.

4. Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, Akron, Ohio

As the only railroad operating within a national park, the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad features vintage train cars, from the locomotive to each passenger car. You can enjoy a meal inside a glass-domed dining car or sit in a classic passenger car. The train takes you through Cuyahoga National Park , alongside the Cuyahoga River. During your trip, you’ll take in the amazing views of the park’s forest as well as wildlife, including a beaver marsh and otters. A second route takes you to the Hale Farm, a living history farm that depicts life during the 1800s. You’ll tour classic farm buildings, see farm animals, and even watch cooking demonstrations using utensils common to the era. The railroad also hosts special dining excursions.

Pro Tip: Plan to spend 3 to 4 hours for your experience aboard the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.

5. Cape Cod Central Railroad, Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Traveling over 27 miles of the former New Haven Railroad, Cape Cod Central Railroad takes you along sand dunes, cranberry bogs, and marshes as you experience areas of the cape that can only be seen by train. Using vintage locomotives and passenger cars, Cape Cod excursions depart from Buzzards Bay and Hyannis. Dining and lounge cars date back to the 1930s and ’40s, as well as a club car from 1917. Cape Cod Central Railroad also hosts special events and holiday-themed trips. Running June through October, you’ll want to plan 2 hours for the round-trip adventure.

Boone Scenic Valley Railroad.

6. Boone And Scenic Valley Railroad, Boone, Iowa

Travel back to the 1920s as you board a coach car to travel from Boone to the mining town of Fraser on the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad . Besides coach cars, you can enjoy your tour from a bi-level commuter car or an open-air car. As you travel through the river valley to the old mining town, you’ll see a different view of Iowa as you pass through heavily wooded areas. Lunch and dinner tours are also popular with train riders. The Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad operates from Memorial Day weekend through October.

Pro Tip: Passengers are encouraged to arrive an hour before their tour. Ride tickets include admission to the James H. Andrews Railroad Museum, where you can learn about the history of Iowa’s railroads before or after your train ride.

Royal Gorge Route Railroad.

7. Royal Gorge Route Railroad, Canon City, Colorado

Travel 1,000 feet below the mountains on this train ride. The scenery of southeastern Colorado alone is worth a ride on the Royal Gorge Route Railroad . But, toss in the history that a vintage train brings, and your Royal Gorge experience becomes a bucket-list trip. Heading out from Canon City, you’ll pass alongside the Arkansas River as you travel through the canyon, looking up to the Rocky Mountains on either side. Enjoy your ride from the comfort of a dining car on one of the four dinner options, or catch a ride in a coach car. You’ll definitely want to spend time in the open-air cars soaking up the majestic views. Arrive early to check out the Santa Fe Depot before your adventure. Passengers should plan to spend 2 to 3 hours on the round-trip tour.

Editor’s Note: Find more area inspiration in our g uide, How To Spend A Day At Royal Gorge .

8. Kansas Belle Dinner Train, Baldwin City, Kansas

Offering dinner train rides on Saturday evening and a Sunday afternoon lunch tour, the Kansas Belle Dinner Train only operates on weekends. With the Saturday tour offering a romantic dinner menu, you’ll often find diners dressed a little more formally for this 3-hour train ride. The Saturday trip features a five-course meal, from appetizer to dessert, with entrees that feature prime rib, Cornish hen, and fish. As you enjoy your dinner excursion, you’ll pass through the Kansas countryside. The Sunday trip is more family friendly, with a casual environment and a three-course meal. The dinner train also offers a children’s menu.

9. Cass Scenic Railroad, Cass, West Virginia

Traveling the same line from when it was built to support logging in 1901, the Cass Scenic Railroad traverses 22 miles over a 4.5-hour round trip that takes you almost 2,400 feet in elevation to Bald Knob on the second highest peak in West Virginia. During your travels, the steam-powered locomotive takes you past some of the most beautiful views on the Appalachian Mountains. You’ll see spruce trees among the dense forest, as well as valleys and other mountain peaks. While in Cass, check out the historical buildings and stores at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park .

Pro Tip: The Cass Scenic Railroad runs May to November, but Cass Scenic Railroad State Park is open year-round.

Blue Ridge Scenic Railway.

10. Blue Ridge Scenic Railway, Blue Ridge, Georgia

Dating back to the 1880s, the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway got its start as a rail line running from Marietta to Copperhill, Tennessee. Today, you’ll hop aboard the heritage train and enjoy a scenic 1-hour ride to the sister cities of McCaysville, Georgia, and Copperhill. It’s a 6-minute walk from one community to the other, and while you’re there, you can spend up to 2 hours exploring or shopping before hopping back on the train for the 1-hour return trip to Blue Ridge.

Pro Tip: The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway runs March to December, closing in January and February.

11. Grand Canyon Railway, Williams, Arizona

Running daily from Williams, the Grand Canyon Railway takes you to a depot just a few feet from the Grand Canyon’s southern rim. With vintage steam and diesel engines, you’ll enjoy your ride in enclosed and air-conditioned passenger cars while traveling through ponderosa pine trees and then to a high plains desert before arriving at the canyon. You’ll want to arrive early at the Williams depot to check out the Western town, and then watch as the local sheriff takes on would-be bank robbers in a memorable shootout. Then, as you’re enjoying the ride to the canyon, you’ll be entertained by Western characters through song and skits. You may even see train robbers racing alongside the train on their faithful steeds. During your excursion, be on the lookout for any would-be robbers who may have sneaked onto the train. Your round-trip visit to the Grand Canyon includes spending three hours at the South Rim, where you can explore the canyon’s sights on your own or sign up for a guided tour.

Pro Tips: You may want to consider reserving a room at the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel during your visit. Learn more about the Grand Canyon North Rim versus South Rim here .

There Are Even More Historic Trains In The USA To Hop On This Year!

  • Historic US train rides offer an authentic way to learn and experience America's past, from the oldest continuously operating railroad in the US to a railway that retraces the steps of the Klondike Gold Rush.
  • These historic American train rides provide stunning scenery, whether it's winding through the San Juan National Forest, passing through the majestic Alaskan mountains, or taking in the beauty of the Catskills during the winter holiday season.
  • Many of these American historic trains and their old railroads allow passengers to immerse themselves in the Wild West theme, witness the rich mining history of different regions, and enjoy interactive experiences like themed train robberies and shootouts.

While passenger trains have long largely gone out of fashion in America, there are plenty of historic train rides all around the country. Some of these train rides are only short, while others are much more complete adventures.

9 White Pass And Yukon Route, Alaska

High in the alaskan mountains, this rail route is a throwback to the klondike gold rush.

The Klondike Gold Rush was the last and greatest of the gold rushes in history. Thousands of people scrambled to cross over the mountain ranges of Alaska to get to the gold fields of Dawson City in Canada's Yukon Territory.

Soon, a train was built through the mountains from Skagway to Canada. Today, a section of the railroad from Skagway to Whitehorse has been restored. It offers a great throwback to the Klondike Gold Rush, enabling travelers to learn about this event's history and retrace the steps of those who lived throughout this significant time in US history.

  • Built : 1898 to 1900

8 The "Skunk Train," Northern California

Witness stunning redwood views and vistas along the noyo river canyon.

Take a tour through the redwoods of Northern California on the historic "Skunk Train" (it was once notorious for its smell from the train's fumes). Today, visitors can still ride in the old railroad cars without the smells of the past.

Relax and enjoy the ride as it takes passengers through varying scenery, including over trestle bridges, through tunnels, and along the Noyo River Canyon.

The railroad has real Wild West stories and offers a trip back in time for passengers who can learn about this period and the people who lived it.

See the gold mines at the end, capping off an authentic tourist experience.

6 The Polar Express, New York

Soak up christmas magic and the catskills mountains from this historic train.

The Polar Express takes over during the winter holiday season from the historic trains in the Catskills offering rides for hikers. The Polar Express is Christmas-themed and a wonderful experience for the whole family.

Passengers are encouraged to wear their pajamas and really get into the festive atmosphere. The Polar Express is one of the best ways to enjoy the Catskills in the winter. It's also among the best Christmas experiences in the US, hands down.

There are plenty more scenic Christmas train rides that adults will love as much as kids during the holiday season.

5 Royal Gorge Route Railroad, Colorado

A rich military and presidential past give this real wild west train ride its flowers.

The Royal Gorge Route Railroad is so stunning that President Teddy Roosevelt claimed it bankrupted the English language. It is a real Wild West railroad famous for the "Royal Gorge War," which involved fights between rival railroad companies to build the first railroad there.

Ride through the "Grand Canyon of Arkansas" and explore one of America's heritage trains.

  • Built : ~1880

4 Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, New Mexico

See the epic rocky mountain west on north america's oldest, longest, and highest steam railroad.

Another historic train ride in America worth hopping aboard is the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad in Chama, New Mexico. For those after a peaceful and history/landscape-rich trip in this New Mexico stronghold, the Cumbres and Toltec route is one to consider.

The rail runs 64 miles and is North America's oldest, longest, highest, and most authentic steam railroad. Passengers also get to witness the stunning Rocky Mountain West.

  • Built : 1880

3 Georgetown Loop Train, Colorado

Gold panning and mining make this short historic train ride worth it.

Another historic train to jump aboard for scenic views is the Georgetown Loop Train , located 45 miles west of Denver in beautiful Clear Creek County, Colorado. This route is unique because of its gold panning stop and mining museum detour.

Because Colorado has long been associated with gold (and silver), this scenic loop takes passengers along areas where people once and can still find gold. It's also worth mentioning that this train runs between Georgetown and Silver Plume, spanning nearly one hour and 15 minutes. All in all, this is one of the most historic steam train rides in the US for true locomotive fans hoping to combine history and scenic views!

  • Built : 1877

The scenic train from Denver to Moab is also worth the adventure for those hoping to hop aboard historic rail rides from Colorado!

2 Conway Scenic Railroad, New Hampshire

Sandwiched between a weekend of Third Eye Blind shows back in June, was an Amphitheater performance by none other than the beloved Train. I'm no stranger to their live shows. I've seen them everywhere from 20,000 capacity outdoor stadiums to Tropicana Field to intimate settings such as the Mahaffey Theatre for their Christmas Show last December. No matter the venue, Pat Monahan and company always seem to bring down the house.

Their most recent Tampa stop was no exception as Train played a set full of hits to a mostly filled Florida Central Credit Union Amphitheater. (Likely cause from tickets being on Groupon for $15) I missed out on openers Matt Nathanson and The Fray, but got my spot in the lawn just as Train hit the stage.

One of the reasons Train has survived and still has the ability to play such large venues after all these years is due to the vocal ability of Monahan. The singer is an absolute beast, focusing on the vocals and belting out line after line that carries well into the last few rows of lawn space. Pat's antics really make Train an entertaining band to see live. He departed into the crowd for a few songs and even invited audience members on stage to dance with him at different parts of the night.

The other main reason is that Train is a well oiled machine now that knows what the fans want to hear. They play materials from all seven of their studio albums, but they definitely focus on the hits. Even a causal music fan would be amazed with how many Train tunes they recognize. Not one of the greatest hits was missed on the evening, keeping the crowd loud and captivated for the full set duration.

Highlights for myself was poppy '50 Ways to Save Goodbye' right into 'If It's Love' to get the crowd going from the start, as well as honoring their early work with classics in 'Meet Virginia' and 'Drops of Jupiter.' I thought the best vocal performance of the night was hearing Pat sing his heart out on 'When I Look to the Sky.'

The fans were well satisfied throughout the set, and Train even threw in a series of familiar covers to mix things up. This included Aerosmith's 'Dream On' as part of a sing a long encore. Overall, there was no better place to be in Tampa that night for $15. Train is always sounding good and putting on a fun show. I know I'll be buying tickets next summer (or hopefully this winter) for their next stop in Florida.

Train was decent, not as good as they were last year when I saw them at The Ravinia in Highland Park, but decent. As usual, their performance was a very high energy one, which definitely made it enjoyable. However, in spite of that, the vocals and the instrumentation still left something to be desired.

They opened with one of their newer songs and initially the lead singer's voice sounded a little nasal and whiny. Fortunately, it got better as the show progressed. Even so, there were still a couple of rocky moments and at least one where I saw him pull his earpiece out so he could hear himself because he was off key.

As for the instrumentation, after hearing such great musicians at the Milwaukee Summer Fest, the band didn't really excite me or make me say ooh. While they weren't horrible, they weren't spectacular either. I did however, like the background singers. They sounded really good and they definitely added a much needed element to the show.

I also loved when they brought the kids from the audience onstage and let them dance during one of the songs. That was awesome and I love the fact that Train's show is one that you can bring a kid to without having to be concerned that they'll see or hear something they shouldn't. Therefore, in spite of my various caveats about this particular performance, I won't rule out seeing them again because they still have great songs, they always give you a good show and in spite of my caveats, I still had a good time.

I first saw Train in concert in 2006 and I loved every minute of it. This is exactly my type of music. It isn't too hard, yet it makes you feel pretty good about things going on around you.

I especially love Pat's acoustic version of Drops of Jupiter. I really like when they play that one on a show. There's something really honest about simple guitar pieces – it really shows off a person's talent, as it does with this piece by Train.

That said, it's also really fun when Pat suddenly whips out a megaphone to sing "I Got You". I like how they seem so comfortable with their music. The audience really got into it when "Save Me San Francisco" was performed. The audience was part of the song, and were made to sing part of the song. This was a really fun part of the show. The audience really got into the show at this point.

I went to my last Train show with a few people that weren't really familiar with Train, but as the show went on, they really seemed to be having a good time and getting into the music. You just couldn't help yourself.

Train have a way of just making you feel like you wanted to join in. I will definitely go to another concert by Train this year, they're touring pretty hard at the moment. I think the 'nonbelievers' that were with me would also immediately agree to going to another concert!

Saw OAR, James Bay and Train this past Wednesday at the Hammerstein Ballroom. During the beginning of James Bay's set that there were not enough speakers to fully fill the space, but they figured out how to fix that audio by the end of the show. James Bay - Let it Go brought chills. He is so so great live - and even more talented of a live performer than he is a recorded artist. Extremely talented guitar player, and integrated rock with his adaption of Creedence Clearwater Revival's 'Proud Mary.' The night ended with Train - they were... AMAZING. Patrick Monahan has such a stage presence and was nothing but smiles the entire night. The set list was so on point, and even included an appearance from Matt Nathanson. They finished with Hey Soul Sista and Drops of Jupiter.

Pat and the boys at a nice small venue, support was adequate and appropriate for the band

Train played All their best from the back catalogue plus a selection from the tour titled album

Saving the top tune for the encore

A great mix of old and new with Pat interactive with the mixed audience...

Extremely warm especially once everyone started bopping and singing although some breeze eventually started to drift through

Drinks prices were extortionate and the empty plastic glasses caused more issues once discarded on the floor ...concession and security were efficient and friendly ... Park next door .., pre book and save a few quid

Twenty minute walk to the quod along the canal for some pre concert food

I had the best time at this concert. Train performed a couple of covers (awesome!), a few new tunes, and their greatest hits! Pat was a consummate showman and the band was exceedingly talented! I took my parents (very young 63 and 64) for their 45th anniversary! Train is one of their all-time favorite bands and it was an absolute treat to share this experience with them. They drove up from Nashville to see them with me in Columbia.

Thank you to Train for such a wonderful performance! You guys are tremendously talented and put on a fabulous show!!!

Thank you Songkick for alerting me to this concert and making this experience possible for myself and my family!

Train was Awesome. Pat is such an amazing and talented artist. From taking probably 100+ selfies with fans while singing on stage, to him and all the band autographing a Train t-shirt and tossing it into the crowd, the entire evening was one of the best concert experiences of my life. I love when they do covers of other groups songs. Tonight Train did "With a Little Help From My Friends" and Pat brought out Isaac Slade (The Fray) and Matt Nathanson to sing with him. Best version of that song I've heard. Can't say enough good things about Train, from the band to their music, to attending live concerts. They are the best.

This was my 8th Train concert..their concerts are unbelievabley amazing. Pat (lead singer) makes you feel like hes performing just for you. He does an amazing job connecting with the crowd. Every Train concert I've been to has improved emensly. I doubt you will go to any concert and get the same interaction. Mostly every concert I've been to, have gotten something out of it. It's either a signed t-shirt, a t-shirt he threw into the crowd and I caught, a signed beach ball, a picture with him or even going up on stage. The experience you will encounter at a Train concert is unforgettable.

Even with it being so hot out the entire band really went all out on stage train played for about an hour and a half. Matt Nathanson, and the singer for fray joined in on the song with a little help from my friends! It was excellent! Also enjoyed the rendition of Dream on by Aerosmith! During the encore!

This is the hands down best band! Not only do they have a amazing music, but the lead has the other members sing different songs as well! That is a great secure band lead! He always includes the fans in concert and it is very deliberate you can tell its not staged. I will always follow them and their amazing concert Venus. Thanks Train you are officially my favorite band. If you knew my obsession with music..that's saying a lot!

11 Best Train Rides in Michigan | Scenic Michigan Train Tours

Would you like to save this full guide.

We'll email this article to you, so you can come back to it later!

Michigan has several picturesque routes that you can drive. But it also has several that you can only see on authentic train rides. Through countrysides and historic towns, taking a scenic train ride in Michigan is a fun way to tour the Mitten especially during the fall .

Many of the trains are historic themselves and have been restored to give you the chance to experience a piece of the past. In fact, the state has a rich history in the railroad industry. The next time you want a one-of-a-kind day trip, check out the below train rides in Michigan .

Steam Railroading Institute-Owosso

Michigan’s Railroad History

The railroad system in Michigan started in 1833 when the first tracks were laid between Adrian and Toledo on the Erie & Kalamazoo Railroad. Surprisingly, it was a state newspaper — The Western Immigrant — that suggested building a transcontinental railroad the year before.

However, it took three years for horse-powered rail services to start on the line. That’s right! The first rail services were powered with horses, not trains. It wasn’t until 1837 that the first steam locomotive was placed into service on the Erie & Kalamazoo Railroad.

Rail Expansion Across the State

In the meantime, other parts of Michigan started building railways. Construction began on the Michigan Central Railroad in 1836. It connected Detroit with Ypsilanti in 1838, Ann Arbor in 1839, and Jackson in 1841. By this point, the Michigan rail system had grown to more than 104 miles.

By the end of the decade, more rail construction connected Detroit with Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, and New Buffalo, making it the first line to cross the state. This gave Michigan 380 miles of rail line as of 1850. After that, the tracks expanded across state lines, allowing service into Chicago for the first time in 1852. Four years later, a line connecting Detroit to Toledo was completed.

In 1855, the Iron Mountain Railroad was the first common carrier line to be chartered in the Upper Peninsula. Then, the Negaunee-Marquette line was finished in 1857. Michigan had 770 miles of railroad by 1860 and 1,739 miles by 1870. In 1871, the state built 559 miles of mainline track, the most in a single year.

Railroad expansion continued at a significant pace, reaching 3,823 miles by 1880, 6,957 miles by 1890, and 7,946 miles by 1900. Michigan had more than 9,000 miles of track by 1910. Meanwhile, the road system was improving, so more people were using cars and trucks to get around. As a result, the miles of railroad track began to shrink. As of 2010, the length of Michigan’s railroads had dropped to a collective 3,634 miles.

Contribution to Economy

The rail boom had a very important role in Michigan’s economic development. Freight railroads gave shippers a cost-effective means to transport bulk and heavy commodities. The automotive industry still depends on the rails to transport materials between their plants and to move finished vehicles to their markets. Also, the agricultural industry relies on freight rails to ship grains to the marketplace.

Over recent years, freight lines and the trucking industry have collaborated to transport goods via containers. Along with being cost effective, it’s an energy-efficient alternative to trucking because it generates less air pollution. Furthermore, railroads are critical to the country’s defense in terms of transporting heavy weaponry.

Intercity Passenger Services

Intercity passenger service between Kalamazoo and Detroit started in 1846 and was provided by the private railroads until 1971. Then, Amtrak was established to operate a passenger service. This era began with two daily round trips between Detroit and Chicago.

In 1974, the frequency was increased to three daily round trips, and one of them went to Toledo. The Chicago-Port Huron service started the same year, and the Chicago-Grand Rapids service started in 1984. In 1994, the two services that ended in Detroit were extended to Pontiac. The following year, the third service that ended in Toledo was rerouted to Pontiac.

The passenger business remained relatively steady for several years before a major increase during the beginning of the 21st century. Statewide intercity passenger numbers achieved a record high in 2013 and decreased slightly in 2014. The 2013 high may have been influenced by Amtrak launching services that operate at up to 110 mph, the first in the United States outside of the Northeast corridor.

Amtrak and private railroads continue to offer passenger train rides in Michigan, contributing to the state’s economic well-being. The services connect people to educational and career opportunities, increase productivity, encourage tourism, raise property values around the stations, and enhance environmental efficiency.

Train Rides in Michigan Upper Peninsula

Lake linden and torch lake railroad.

On the west side of the Upper Peninsula in Lake Linden, the Houghton County Historical Society runs a museum complex with a wide selection of exhibits, including large machines that are displayed outdoors. The Keweenaw Peninsula village used to be home to the biggest copper milling operation on the continent, and the society showcases its importance. The museum building has three floors with artifacts and other items regarding local mining, logging, and cultural history.

Among these exhibits is a working Calumet & Hecla Mining Co. train, which you can ride on the Lake Linden and Torch Lake Railroad . These historic train rides in Michigan are available during the summer and part of October for Halloween-themed adventures. The train travels a ⅖-mile loop around the museum campus, and the cheap ticket fees pay for track and car maintenance. If you live in the area, annual family passes are available. Once you’ve finished your train ride head to Marquette for a beautiful color tour .

Tahquamenon Falls Riverboat Tour & the Famous Toonerville Trolley

Tahquamenon Falls Riverboat Tours has been offering riverboat and scenic train rides in Michigan since 1927. The tours are located on a logging site that was once operated by Robert Hunter. He purchased the 15,000 acres in the early 1900s and had a small rail line — the Hunter and Love Line — built to aid the work.

At the time, lumberjacks would stack harvested trees on the river bank in the winter. When spring came, the river would thaw, swell from the melting snow, and carry the logs downstream and over Upper Tahquamenon Falls (the Niagara of Michigan) to Lake Superior. In the process, though, many of the trees would absorb too much water and sink, or they would sustain damage going over the falls.

The Duluth South Shore and Atlantic Railroad built the Hunter and Love Line, which spurred from Soo Junction, Michigan, to the sawmill about 5.5 miles away. The 24-inch gauge railroad was completed in 1910, aiding the transport of the harvested trees.

Hunter completed his logging operation in 1925, at which time the sawmill and railroad spur were shut down. Eventually, the rail was reopened to shorten Joe Beach’s daily river patrol as a conservation officer at the McNearney Farm along the river. Then, he got the idea to start a waterfall tour business using the rail line and a riverboat.

You can experience the 6.5-hour tour for yourself. It begins at Soo Junction with a 35-minute ride on the Toonerville Trolley — a narrow gauge train — and is followed with a 2-hour narrated cruise on a riverboat. Once you reach the rapids above Upper Tahquamenon Falls, you can disembark and hike the ⅝-mile trail to see the falls. You get about 1 hour and 15 minutes to explore the area before returning to Soo Junction.

Polar Express Train Rides in Michigan

Southwest Michigan Train Rides

Coopersville & marne railway.

Offering historic train rides in Michigan, the Coopersville & Marne Railway is an all-volunteer railway that operates vintage locomotives and passenger cars from the 1920s. First laid in 1858, the tracks run for about 14 miles from Coopersville to Grand Rapids . However, the passenger service only travels 7 miles between Coopersville and Marne. The rest of the line between Marne and Grand Rapids is reserved for hauling freight cars.

The passenger services run between spring and winter, preserving a part of Michigan’s railroad history and educating you along the way. During the ride, the train crosses over an open deck girder bridge, a road bridge, and four creeks. Part of the way, the track runs alongside Interstate 96. Upon arrival in Marne, the vintage locomotive detaches from the cars, moves onto the passing tracks, and reattaches to the other end of the train to pull it back to Coopersville — all within about 90 minutes.

On Saturdays during the summer, the railway operates EnterTRAINment Excursions. These rides feature a variety of musicians and the Singing Trainman, who performs railroad and other acoustic songs. You even learn about the railroad history and equipment from the conductor. In addition, the Coopersville & Marne Railway offers specialty train rides throughout the year:

  • The Bunny Train operates in the spring and features the Easter Bunny with a cast of musical, wacky characters who perform and pass out toys.
  • The Veterans Free Troop Train operates around Memorial Day weekend, offering free rides to veterans.
  • The Great Train Robbery is an event that takes you back to 1858, giving you the thrill of the Wild Old West with a shootout between recognizable characters.
  • The Murder Mystery Train involves solving a simple robbery that turns into a murder mystery.
  • The Famous Pumpkin Train is a fall train rides Michigan tradition featuring the Scarecrow, Little Crow, and Grand Pumpkin.
  • The Santa Train in the winter gives kids a chance to meet Santa and his friends and listen to Christmas-themed stories told by a Princess.

Little River Railroad

Using an authentic steam engine train that’s more than 100 years old, the Little River Railroad offers scenic train rides in Michigan. The ride runs from Coldwater to Quincy or Hillsdale before returning to Coldwater. When the train gets to Quincy or Hillsdale, it takes about 30 minutes for the locomotive to detach and reattach for the return journey. During this time, you’re allowed to get out of the passenger car and watch the process.

The price and length of the train rides depend on the theme that Little River Railroad has planned. Here’s an overview:

  • The Lazy Days summer rides and Holiday Express with Santa last for about 45 minutes to 1 hour.
  • The Easter Bunny Express with an Easter Egg Hunt, Father’s Day ride, Quincy Flyer, and Fall Pumpkin Train last about 1 hour and 45 minutes.
  • The Hillsdale Flyer is about 4 hours because the city is farther away than Quincy.

Additionally, you can rent a passenger car or the entire train. It’s a unique way to celebrate a birthday, family reunion, company event, or other gathering.

Steam Railroading Institute-Owosso

Train Rides in Southeast Michigan

Steam railroading institute.

Operating the famous Pere Marquette No. 1225 , the Steam Railroading Institute offers some of the most popular train rides in Michigan. The institute manages a museum complex where the former Ann Arbor Railroad roundhouse and steam shops were located in Owosso. Through the summer, the complex is open for tours.

When you first arrive, go to the Welcome Center to see a model railroad layout, a collection of archival materials and artifacts, and other exhibits. A volunteer guide can take you through the museum and give you a behind-the-scenes peek at the collection and equipment. The highlight of the tour is visiting the back shop where the Pere Marquette rests when it’s not in operation. Make sure that you visit the gift shop for fun railroad toys, souvenirs, and specialty gifts before leaving.

Throughout the year, you can ride the Pere Marquette 1225 , one of the biggest operating steam locomotives in Michigan. It’s famous for being the muse for the 2004 animated film “The Polar Express.” The animated train was created based on its blueprints and sounds. Although weekend trips and sporadic all-day excursions are available during the year, the 1-hour The Polar Express train ride in Michigan attracts a lot of people in December.

In addition, the SRI complex features a 7.5-gauge miniature railroad. The little train operates between the rails and parallel with the Shiawassee River Trail. It’s a fun ride for all ages and is only available on Fridays and Saturdays between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Huckleberry Railroad at Crossroads Village-Flint-

Huckleberry Railroad at Crossroads Village

From Memorial Day through Labor Day, you have the chance for scenic train rides in Michigan on the Huckleberry Railroad . The railroad was part of Flint Pere Marquette Railroad Company when it was put into operation in 1857. The line got its name from the trains running so slow that a person could jump off, pick some huckleberries, and jump back on without much effort.

You can ride this historic line on a 40-minute journey from Crossroads Village. The railroad operates three locomotives — one diesel, one coal-fired, and one steam — on a rotation to accommodate repairs and improvements. The locomotives pull original and replica wooden coaches along Mott Lake and down the historic Pere Marquette roadbed before turning back to Crossroads Village.

For a couple of weekends during the summer, you have the chance to spend the day with Thomas the Tank Engine. The event features a ride on Thomas, meeting with Sir Topham Hatt, lawn games, and more. It’s an exciting event for young kids who love watching Thomas at home.

Also, Crossroads Village has more than 34 historic structures to explore. You can’t visit for a train ride without catching a show at the opera house, learning about craftsman trades, or hopping on amusement rides. Your ride on the Huckleberry Railroad is only one small part of an all-day adventure.

Michigan fall color train tour on the Pere Marquette 1225

Michigan Transit Museum

In Mt. Clemens, the Michigan Transit Museum is located in the old Mount Clemens Train Station, which was built in 1859 and operated until 1980. The building is on the National Registry of Historic Places and houses a range of exhibits that keep alive Michigan’s railroad history. During its operation, the depot was part of a 60-mile line that ran between Detroit and Port Huron.

A harrowing story at the depot — Thomas Edison saved the son of the station agent in 1862. The boy was on the tracks and in the path of a boxcar. As thanks, the station agent taught Edison telegraphy, which started his short railroading career and some of his earliest inventions.

Aside from exhibits, the Michigan Transit Museum offers train rides on its continuously restored equipment. The coaches are pulled by a former United States Air Force Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton RS4TC diesel switcher. Only the military owned this specific model, and the museum is one of several places across the country that has one to preserve. All of the train rides are about 45 minutes and feature a different theme throughout the year:

  • Summer trains run mid-June to mid-September
  • Fall Harvest trains run from mid-September to mid-October
  • Trick-or-Treat trains run at the end of October
  • Holiday Express trains run in December

Greenfield Village-Dearborn

Greenfield Village at the Henry Ford Museum

The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn is an internationally recognized destination that immerses visitors in the innovation and resourcefulness that helped make the United States what it is today. It’s a historic landmark with an exceptional collection of artifacts that spans 300 years of history and continues to grow.

Greenfield Village is part of the experience, offering historic train rides in Michigan. The operating steam-powered locomotive is one of the oldest in the country. It runs on the Weiser Railroad from an 1800s train depot. During the ride, you learn about the history of railroading in the area. Afterward, you can explore the working late 19th-century roundhouse. This area of the museum complex features other modes of transport as well — Model T and horse-drawn carriage rides.

For a couple of weekends, Thomas the Tank Engine visits the Weiser Railroad. Along with riding the special character train, the all-day celebration includes meeting Sir Topham Hatt, magic shows, live music, storytelling, and more.

Southern Michigan Railroad-Clinton

Southern Michigan Railroad

Managed by the Southern Michigan Railroad Society, the Southern Michigan Railroad is a line that stretches for 13.5 miles. This Jackson Branch began in Palmyra in 1836 and was expanded to Tecumseh in 1837 and again to Clinton in 1853. What makes it different from the other railroads is that it’s completely owned by the organization and only used to preserve the line’s history. This makes it a living museum that operates historic train rides in Michigan .

While you learn about the historic railroad, the trains take you on a scenic journey through forests, countrysides, and small towns. During the year, the organization offers various themes. The 2-hour Spring Wildflower Trains run between Clinton and Tecumseh, giving you layover options to explore. The Summer Tours run from Clinton to Tecumseh, and the Fall Colors Tours in October run from Tecumseh to Clinton. In December, Santa Tours are available. You have the chance to attend popular events in the towns during some of these train rides.

The Old Road Dinner Train

For a Michigan train tour with dinner, hop aboard The Old Road Dinner Train operated by the Adrian & Blissfield Rail Road Company. The trains operate from Blissfield and Charlotte.

The Blissfield Train runs on part of the original Erie & Kalamazoo Railroad through rich farmland in Southeastern Michigan that is thought to have been the bottom of Lake Erie at one time. The ride takes you to Lenawee Junction where more than 40 trains used to exchange passengers and goods every day. You can book three-course lunches or five-course dinners — both with an optional murder mystery. Weekday evening charters are also available.

The Charlotte Train runs on part of the Grand Valley Rail Road, which was built in 1870 and connects Jackson and Grand Rapids. During the leisure, 2-hour round trip, you pass through historic Charlotte and some countryside to the east. On the other hand, you can book a five-course dinner with or without a murder mystery.

Along with fine dining, the Murder Mystery Trains feature a humorous tableside mystery with an acting troupe. The group rotates the shows during the year and selects some of the riders to participate. The murder mystery and dinner take about 3 hours.

Moreover, the Adrian & Blissfield Rail Road Company offers several specialty train rides in December. You can have lunch with Santa, experience the Santa Express, or solve the New Year’s Eve murder mystery. In any case, you can expect a spectacular show and delicious food.

Coopersville Train - Fall in Michigan

Alternative — A Southern Michigan Train Tour on Amtrak

For the most part, the above train rides in Michigan only allow you to explore a town or two. Did you know that Amtrak makes it easy to visit multiple cities in Southern Michigan ? The center of the company’s cross-country rail system is in Chicago, and the trains make frequent daily trips to key cities in Michigan — Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, East Lansing , Battle Creek, Jackson, Ann Arbor, Detroit, and Port Huron.

In fact, there are 22 depots from which you can start a Michigan train tour on Amtrak. It’s possible to plan an entire vacation out of riding the rails. Although you don’t get a history lesson with your ride, you can look out the window for a scenic view of the state’s beautiful landscape.

Have you experienced any of these Michigan train rides? Do you have a scenic train ride on your bucket list?

Denver Railroads

Colorado has one of the most colorful railroad histories in the world. Following the discovery of gold and silver in the Rockies, railroad lines were pushed up nearly every canyon and high pass, making them the lifeline of every mining camp and community in the state.

It was the railroads that changed Denver from a wild frontier town to a large, urban city -- the most elegant and sophisticated metropolis between Chicago and Los Angeles. The colorful history of railroading through the Rockies has inspired railroad buffs for many years, making Denver one of the major destinations in the world for rail fans. But even railroad novices will enjoy some of the model railroads and railroad museums to be found in the area.

Established in 1958, this museum has the largest collection of historic records, mementos, artifacts, photos and stock of Colorado railroads. At one point, more than 2,000 miles of narrow-gauge track probed the mountains of Colorado, and the exciting era comes to life at the  Colorado Railroad Museum .

The Museum is housed in a replica of an 1880-style masonry depot, filled with 50,000 rare old photographs and artifacts. Outside on 12 acres of sprawling grounds are more than 50 narrow- and standard-gauge locomotives, cars and other rolling stock. The museum has its own spur, allowing it to have "steam ups" throughout the year. In the basement of the museum is one of Colorado's largest HO model railroad exhibits, representing more than 20 years work in an area 45 feet by 20 feet, much of it recreating a cross-section of the state's most interesting railroads such as those at Cripple Creek, Telluride and Tennessee Pass. There are also many special events throughout the year, including Steam Ups With Thomas, visits from Santa and much more. It's a great, family-friendly attraction. Locomotives and cars come from such famous Colorado railroads as the Colorado Midland; the South Park, the Florence & Cripple Creek; the Denver Boulder & Western; and the Manitou & Pikes Peak.

The Rio Grande Southern 1931 Galloping Goose No. 2; a meticulously restored Rio Grande 1881 Baldwin 2-8-0 engine; a huge Burlington CB&Q 4-8-4 locomotive; and the "Navajo," a 1937 steel observation car once used on the Santa Fe Super Chief. The museum also has the Railroad Book Store with more than 1,000 titles as well as an assortment of railroad gifts, tapes, magazines and memorabilia.

DENVER TROLLEY

The  Denver Trolley  is a replica of an open-air "Seeing Denver" streetcar operated by the Denver Tramway Company in the pre-World War I era. The trolley follows a scenic route along the South Platte River, beginning near the REI building at  Confluence Park.  It   then goes by the  Downtown Aquarium ,  Children's Museum of Denver at Marsico Campus,   Empower Field at Mile High  and other attractions.

GEORGETOWN LOOP RAILROAD

The  Georgetown Loop Railroad   is a reconstruction of one of Colorado's most famous railroads. The original railroad reached  Georgetown  in 1877 and builders intended to continue it to the rich mining town of  Leadville . That line was never completed, but it was decided to push the railroad up the valley another two miles to the neighboring mining camp of  Silver Plume . The problem was that Silver Plume was 600 feet higher in elevation. To gain that much altitude that fast, the railroad had to twist and turn four and a half miles, making two and a half complete circles and at one point crossing over itself on a 90-foot-high trestle -- the Devil's Gate Bridge. With the collapse of the mining industry and the coming of the automobile, the railroad was closed and in 1939 the bridge and rails were torn up for scrap metal. For 35 years the grade lay undisturbed, but then the Colorado Historical Society began to buy the land to reconstruct and operate the railroad. Steam returned to the valley in 1975, and in 1984 the Devil's Gate Bridge was reopened. Today, steam-powered locomotives make the climb up the valley through the end of September. The train may be boarded in Georgetown or Silver Plume and offers panoramic views, particularly when crossing the bridge. From the open-air viewing cars it is possible to see bighorn sheep and other wildlife, and the sound of the train whistle echoing down the valley is unforgettable.

ROCKY MOUNTAINEER

Get a feel for the rails while seeing some spectacular scenery that only a train ride can provide by traveling from Denver to Glenwood Springs, Colorado, to Moab, Utah, on the  Rocky Mountaineer   . You'll go through Ruby Canyon, see Mount Logan and cross the Continental Divide and see deserts, arches and hoodoos. The spacious glass-domed train coaches let you take it all in.

Tiny Town  began in 1915 at the site of an old stagecoach stop just outside of Denver when George Turner began erecting one-sixth sized buildings for his young daughter. In 1920, the town was open to the public and in just five years it became one of Colorado's top five attractions. By 1939, a miniature railway was added, but a flood, a fire and changing economic conditions forced the attraction to close. In 1988, volunteers began the resurrection of Tiny Town. Today, more than 100 colorful buildings are in place, all beautifully hand-crafted with wonderful details, many with full interiors. Some of the buildings are exact replicas of famous structures from Colorado's history, but all fit the character of a Colorado village at the turn of the century. The one-sixth size village is circled by the miniature tiny town railway, a mile-long run with open-air cars pulled by an authentic steam locomotive similar to the narrow-gauge locomotives that once worked the mountain lines of Colorado. The train crosses a trestle over a small stream, and curls through tall pine trees in its lovely mountain location, affording excellent views of the 100 buildings of the village.

FORNEY MUSEUM OF TRANSPORTATION

The  Forney Museum of Transportation    is a one-of-a-kind collection of more than 500 exhibits relating to historical transportation. It began with antique cars, but soon expanded to include vehicles of all kinds. Some of these are familiar, while others spark the imagination. Highlights include the Big Boy, the world's largest steam locomotive, and a selection of Forney Locomotives, as well as rail cars and private cars.

HUDSON GARDENS

Constructed in the spring of 2000,  Hudson Gardens & Event Center's    Garden Railroad features more than 700 feet of "G" gauge railroad brass track, trestles, bridges, waterfalls, and a variety of plantings matching the scale of the miniature trains. Higher and lower loops allow two trains to run simultaneously--a diesel engine and a steam engine. And a third rail even runs a trolley on a short line. More than 40 tons of rock were used to create this condensed Colorado landscape. A great diversity of plants, from dwarf conifer to rock garden miniatures "create" the garden. The water is recycled to the lower pond and up over the two waterfalls. The Railroad Garden is a popular attraction for Garden Railroad enthusiasts of all ages! The railroad runs May through the first weekend in October.

OTHER RAILROADS IN COLORADO

Royal gorge route.

Considered by many to be the most spectacular stretch of rail in America, the  Royal Gorge Route    offers the best experience of the Royal Gorge on a breathtaking, two- or three-hour scenic and historic train ride on the most famous portion of the former Denver & Rio Grande Western train line. The tracks cling to a narrow ledge while the canyon walls rise 2,000 feet straight above. A highlight is the world-famous "Hanging Bridge." The train features one of Colorado's finest gourmet lunch and dinner train experiences throughout the year, as well as many special events, including Mother's Day Brunch, Oktoberfest and Santa Express Train.

CRIPPLE CREEK & VICTOR NARROW GAUGE RAILROAD

Take a ride on the  Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad   , a four-mile round trip through one of the most historic goldfields in Colorado on authentic steam locomotives. Cripple Creek legalized casino gambling in October 1991, and now offers over 20 casinos with slot machines, poker and blackjack. The train runs daily from Memorial Day Weekend through October.

DURANGO & SILVERTON NARROW GAUGE RAILROAD

CUMBRES & TOLTEC SCENIC RAILROAD

500 S. Terrace Ave, Chama, NM The  Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad  is America's longest (64 miles each way) and highest (10,015 feet) narrow- gauge steam railroad. Starting in Antonito, Colorado, the line angles southwest through rolling high country, then begins a steady climb through the forested slopes of the San Juan range, passing through groves of pine and at 10,015 feet in spectacular Toltec Gorge of the Los Pinos River. The line then begins a precipitous 4-percent grade drop into Chama, New Mexico.

COLORADO & SOUTHERN R.R. CO

326 E. 7th St., Leadville Leadville, the highest incorporated city in the nation, is the departure point for the Leadville, Colorado and Southern Railroad . The train leaves from Leadville's century-old depot and travels over the old Colorado & Southern high line, following the headwaters of the Arkansas River up to a spectacular view of Fremont Pass. Then it's down to French Gulch water tower where the train stops to view Mt. Elbert, Colorado's highest peak.

Westward Bound Tour

Earlier this summer, Union Pacific's legendary Big Boy No. 4014  toured in five states during its 2024 Westward Bound Tour from Wyoming to California. In addition, this mighty steam locomotive was on public display for two days each in Roseville, California and Ogden, Utah. During the tour, the Union Pacific Museum  hosted a special, sold-out passenger trip from Roseville to Sparks, Nevada. The unique experience was the annual gala fundraiser for the nonprofit organization and provided a rare opportunity to travel on this historic heritage equipment. In all, Big Boy No. 4014 will visit 14 of the 23 states Union Pacific serves in 2024.

Future Schedules

Last fall, we had anticipated including Boise, Idaho, and Portland, Oregon on the Westward Bound tour. As planning continued, we determined that the network capacity on our northern corridor could not accommodate Big Boy No. 4014 along with anticipated demand on a single track. Our goal is to share the Big Boy with as many rail fans as possible across our network, and we look forward to seeing everyone track side – 25 feet back – this fall.

The historic georgetown loop.

Our most popular mountain railroad adventure is the historic Georgetown Loop Railroad tour. From late April to early January, we feature daily excursions to the “Silver Queen of the Rockies,”… Georgetown, CO. This railroad traces its heritage all the way back to the booming silver rush days of the 1880’s, when tons of rich minerals were freighted down the tracks through Clear Creek Canyon to the smelters of Denver.

Just getting to Georgetown's Devil's Gate train station (named after a very intriguing rock formation that your driver will point out) is a unique adventure. Your tour guide will feature a brief intermission high atop the snowy peaks of Loveland Pass at 11,990 feet above sea level. You can even have a mid-July snowball fight! The splendor of the Continental Divide is on full display as we present a photographic opportunity for all of you shutterbugs that bankrupts the English language with its raw beauty.

With three blasts from the steam whistle, your journey begins. Ride in comfort and style as the powerful turn-of-the-century locomotive chugs through lush forests of blue spruce and lodgepole pine. And keep your camera ready as the railroad crosses the thunderous waters of Clear Creek eight times!

From its birth at the top of the Continental Divide to the majestic waterfalls beneath the High Bridge, Clear Creek is what inspired treasure seekers to "go west, young man, go west and grow up with the country." Chock full of gold flakes and nuggets, this vibrant waterway runs cold and clear all year long and enthralls rail passengers with its sparkling vistas and thunderous acoustics.

These Historic Rail Journeys From New York City Revive the Golden Age of Travel

Image may contain Nature Outdoors Scenery City Water Waterfront Architecture Building Cityscape and Urban

Train lovers everywhere wait all year for Hudson River Rail's annual excursions that allow passengers to relive the historic splendor of the 20th Century Limited express passenger train, once billed as the “most famous train in the world.” The popular rail journeys sell out every year—and last year, tickets were snapped up in minutes.

Why? Traveling up the Hudson River in two restored vintage train cars, passengers are transported back in time to the 1940s and 50s, when movie stars and presidents boarded the train via red carpet. The scenic train trips follow the original New York Central Railroad main line between Manhattan and Albany, about an eight-hour round trip.

For those looking to experience the golden age of travel themselves, the United Railroad Historical Society of New Jersey has just released the 2024 Hudson River Rail schedule with departures slated from April through July, as well as in October and November (ideal for catching views of fall foliage ).

Image may contain Nature Outdoors Scenery Railway Train Transportation Vehicle Road Plant and Vegetation

The popular Hudson River Rail day trips travel up the Hudson River between New York City and Albany.

Passengers can choose from two classes of service, both of which include lunch and drinks. The luxurious observation lounge, named the Hickory Creek, was the the rearmost—and most exclusive—car on the 20th Century Limited, and is the last-remaining car from the original train. It's since been meticulously restored to its historic appearance, from the signature oversized windows to the vintage carpeting and furniture. If you can't nab one of Hickory Creek's dozen or so seats, then Tavern Lounge No. 43, a lounge car first built in 1947, offers a more affordable alternative to experience the historic route. With seats facing inward and plenty of room to meander, drink, and chat, both of the cars foster a refreshingly social atmosphere on board.

In addition to the day trips from New York City's Penn Station to Albany, this year will premier two new offerings, including overnight itineraries between Chicago and New York. During four one-way and roundtrip journeys in June and July, passengers will sleep aboard the train's historic Pullman Sleeping Cars, indulge in multi-course meals cooked on-board by a private chef, and enjoy the open bar service available throughout the trip.

For the history buffs out there, the 2024 schedule includes a new variation on the classic day trip excursion: the Hudson Valley History Tour. The excursions, slated in May, October, and November, offer a fully narrated tour of the Hudson River Valley in partnership with the National Park Service’s Trails & Rails program.

Tickets go on sale March 15 at 10 a.m., with day trip prices ranging from $179 to $399. The overnight journeys between New York and Chicago are $1,600 for a one-way trip and $3,200 for a round trip.

Last chance for fans to enjoy piece of Merseyrail history

The trains have travelled millions of miles transporting passengers across the Liverpool city region

If you have used the Merseyrail network at any point in the last 45 years, the chances are you have travelled on a Class 507 EMU (Electric Multiple Unit). Introduced in 1978, the trains have travelled millions of miles transporting passengers across the Liverpool city region but are set to head off into retirement when the final remaining units are withdrawn from service over the coming weeks.

Now, the train operator, in association with the Branch Line Society is giving people the opportunity to have a final ride on the trains before waving goodbye to them. ‘The Wirral Swan Song’ charter train will run on Sunday, September 15 on the Wirral line.

Starting at Hooton at 9.20am, the special service will call at all stations on the route, returning to Hooton at 6pm. Lunch and breaks throughout the day will be scheduled. A second and final farewell tour will take place later in the year, of which details will be announced nearer to the time.

A rare opportunity to experience bi-directional running, where trains can operate in either direction of a section of track will also be a feature of the excursions giving passengers the opportunity to sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenic views across the Wirral Lines. Subject to availability, two Class 507 units are scheduled to operate the services.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and improve our understanding of you. This may include adverts from us and third parties based on our knowledge of you. More info

Sally Ralston, Head of Community & Engagement at Merseyrail , said: “These trains are much-loved by people not just from within the Liverpool city region, but across the whole of the UK. The proceeds of the ticket sales will benefit Merseyrail’s current charity partners; Centre 56 Rescue Me Animal Sanctuary, Blackburne House and Parkinson's Wirral.

“Onboard, there will be an opportunity to purchase souvenirs for the special trip including window decals. A charity raffle will give people the chance to win some fantastic prizes and further support the charities.”

The 507 fleet is currently leased from Angel Trains, who are also supporting the farewell tours.

David Jordan, Chief Operating Officer at Angel Trains, said: “We are proud to have supported passengers travelling across Liverpool and beyond for the past 30 years and the role that our fleet has played in creating jobs and sustaining businesses within the region.

“We would like to thank all those at Merseyrail and Merseytravel, who have worked with us to keep this fleet delivering for passengers for as long as it has.”
