15 Best Safari Lodges In Kruger National Park

When it comes to exceptional game viewing, there is nothing that can compare to the Kruger National Park. It is not uncommon to witness the majestic Big 5, including the elusive leopard, powerful lion, formidable buffalo, magnificent rhino, and majestic elephant, all in one day. Additionally, you may also have the privilege of spotting rare species like the cheetah and wild dog. This park is not only one of Africa’s oldest conservation areas, but it also boasts the widest range of wildlife in South Africa. However, you may be wondering which part of the park is the best and where you should choose to stay.

To avoid the crowds and experience a truly remarkable safari, we recommend heading straight for Kruger’s private game reserves. These reserves, driven by conservation efforts, are among the finest safari locations in the park and are home to some of the most exceptional safari lodges on the entire continent. Whether you are a couple, honeymooners, or a family, these 5-star lodges offer a luxury safari experience that is unparalleled. From exquisite cuisine and impeccable service to serene health spas, fully-equipped gyms, and even your very own private butler, these lodges have it all. Moreover, with Africa’s top trackers and guides, you can expect outstanding off-road game viewing, thrilling night game drives (which are not accessible in the public park), and a luxury safari vacation that will leave a lasting impression. In our comprehensive guide, we have compiled the top 15 lodges in Greater Kruger, which encompasses the vast Kruger National Park and a collection of neighboring private reserves. It is widely regarded as one of the best destinations for wildlife viewing in Africa.

While the national park offers accommodation in well-equipped government rest camps that are perfect for self-drive safaris and budget package tours, the private reserves provide a more lavish experience. Within Kruger, there are several private concessions that function as private game reserves. These reserves are home to small, exclusive safari lodges that offer all-inclusive packages. The Big Five viewing opportunities in Greater Kruger are exceptional, and the private reserves and concessions are unmatched when it comes to regular, up-close encounters with these magnificent creatures.

If you are seeking an exclusive luxury safari experience, you may be wondering where to stay.

Best time to go

Generally, the Kruger Park can be visited all year around, but the different seasons offer different experiences. The dry winter months of May to September are considered the best time for game viewing as the vegetation is less dense and animals congregate near water sources making them easier to spot. Day temperatures in winter are pleasant but it can get chilly during the night.

The summer months of November to April are characterized by heavy rains, which can make road conditions difficult and limit game viewing, but it also means that the park is lush and green, and the wildlife is more active. Many young animals are born during this time. January to March is the best time for bird watching as many migratory species are present.

Kruger Travel Q&A

Setting off on an adventure to a new country is an exciting experience that also comes with a set of questions. In the following section, we've addressed the most common travel topics related to Kruger, from getting there and transportation to understanding local customs and ensuring health and safety during your trip.

How do get to Kruger National Park?

If traveling internationally, the most common entry point is through O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg (JNB). There are multiple daily flights to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) in Nelspruit, the smaller Eastgate Airport (HDS) in Hoedspruit and Skukuza Airport (SZK) within the National Park operated by AirLink and CemAir . Some lodges feature their own airstrips, allowing guests to book direct fly-ins straight through the lodge for a seamless travel experience.

Kruger is about a 5 to 6-hour drive from Johannesburg along the N12 and N4 highways. The roads are well-maintained, and the drive is straightforward, taking you through some scenic areas of the Mpumalanga province.

Should I choose a lodge inside Kruger or at a Private game reserve?

Staying inside Kruger National Park plunges you right into the heart of one of Africa's most iconic wildlife terrains. You're amidst vast expanses teeming with the Big Five and myriad other species, granting a raw, unfiltered brush with nature.

Opting for a private game reserve, like Sabi Sands, Timbavati, Klaserie, Kapama or Thornybush, takes the experience up a notch. Here, it's about exclusivity. With fewer tourists around, sightings are intimate, and the off-road driving capabilities let you get up close. While the luxury and personalized service of private reserves might come with a higher price tag, Kruger's sprawling landscape offers a broader range of budget-friendly options. There are some lodges that boast private concessions within Kruger, offering an exclusive and intimate safari experience within the park.

Is there a risk of malaria in the Kruger area?

Kruger National Park is located in a region where there is a risk of malaria, especially during the rain season. Although the risk is generally low, it can increase during the wet summer months from September to May. It's advisable to take necessary precautions, which include taking malaria prophylactics, wearing mosquito repellents, and using bed nets to prevent mosquito bites, especially during the evening and nighttime. We recommend to consult with your doctor or healthcare provider before visiting.

What wildlife can I expect to see during my visit at Kruger?

Kruger National Park is renowned for being home to the Big Five, which consists of the elephant, leopard, buffalo, lion, and rhinoceros. It is one of the best places in the world to witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

Alongside the Big Five, Kruger hosts a stunning diversity of wildlife. In the vast landscapes ranging from dense forests to open grasslands, you can expect to see a variety of other animals including giraffes, which move gracefully among the acacia trees, and zebras that often graze alongside wildebeest forming a picturesque sight in the wild. Hippos and crocodiles can be spotted in the rivers and waterholes, offering you an amazing chance to observe their behavior in the wild. Not to forget the cheetah, another big cat you might encounter in Kruger; this majestic creature is known for its incredible speed and grace.

Bird watchers also flock to Kruger, as it is home to a plethora of bird species, boasting around 500 species, including the vibrant lilac-breasted roller and the large ground hornbill, offering splendid sights and sounds that complement the rich mammalian life.

What should I pack for a trip to Kruger National Park?

We advice you to wear light, breathable, and neutral-colored clothing as they blend well with the natural surroundings and don't attract unwanted attention from the wildlife. Avoid bright colors as they can disturb the animals and refrain from wearing white as it can quickly get dirty.

Consider clothing that covers most of your skin to protect against the sun and biting insects. A wide-brimmed hat can provide good shade for both your face and neck. Given the fluctuating temperatures, layering is a smart choice. It can be chilly in the morning and hot in the afternoon. Bringing a fleece or a warm jacket for the early morning game drives in open safari vehicles.

Comfortable and durable footwear is a must. Consider bringing shoes that support your ankles, especially if you are planning to do any walking or hiking. Shoes with thick soles will protect your feet from thorns and other sharp objects on the ground.

Are there also more affordable accommodation at Kruger?

If you're looking for a more budget-friendly way to discover Kruger, we recommend a self-drive safari and staying at one of the numerous SANParks rest camps, that can be booked directly with the South African National Parks on sanparks.org . These camps are by no means luxurious but they offer a budget-friendly way to stay in a prime location within the national park. Its also worth checking booking sites like booking.com for alternative lodging options around Kruger, e.g. in Nelspruit, Hazyview and Hoedspruit.

Where can I enter the National Park and what are the hours?

Kruger National Park has several gates that provide entry to different sections of the park. Opening and closing times for these gates vary seasonally and are subject to change, so check the official website of SANParks . Usually gates open at 6:00 AM and close at 5:30 PM during the winter season (April to September), and open slightly earlier at 5:30 AM, and close later, at 6:30 PM during summer season (October to March).

Paul Kruger Gate, one of the primary entrances, is centrally located and provides direct access to the central part of the park and to Skukuza. Orpen Gate and Phalaborwa Gate are situated in the central zone, while Pafuri Gate is located in the far north. Gates in the south include Malelane Gate, Crocodile Bridge Gate and Phabeni Gate. Entering or leaving the park through Numbi Gate in the west is not advisable.

If your accommodation lies within the National Park borders, you have to be at the gate early enough to reach the lodge before the gate closure time, and the park rangers are very strict on that.

Travel Guide

  • # 11 in Best Places to Visit in Africa in 2023

Situated roughly 260 miles northeast of Johannesburg , the nearly 5 million-acre Kruger National Park offers some of the best access to wild animals in Africa. The Big Five – buffalo, elephants, leopards, lions and rhinos – all reside here, as well as Nile crocodiles, hippos and rare birds like southern ground-hornbills and lappet-faced vultures. But this sprawling wildlife sanctuary is home to more than just animals. Giant baobab, fever and marula trees tower above the park's savanna, thornveld and woodland landscape. What's more, Kruger's Marula and Nxanatseni regions house the Albasini and Masorini ruins, where Portuguese colonists and members of the indigenous Ba-Phalaborwa ethnic group once traded metal products, beads, clothes and more.

For wildlife lovers, there’s truly no place on earth that compares with Kruger National Park. Located in the far northeast corner of South Africa, the 7,500-square-mile reserve spans 16 distinct natural environments. It is home to not only the Big Five of safari lore — lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros, and cape buffalo — but also myriad fascinating wild animals that dazzle and delight. And you won’t just see one or two zebra or a few wildebeests. Being in the “bush,” as it’s referred to here, means witnessing hundreds of water buffalo moving across the plains, families of dozens of elephants heading to the river, a pride of lion tracking prey together, an entire baobab tree filled with monkeys chattering, or dozens of plains animals such as giraffe, antelope, and zebra coming to drink at a waterhole.

I’ve been writing about African safaris for more than two decades and I still get the same thrill and rush of adrenaline every time I spot an animal in the wild that I had previously only known in a zoo setting. And it’s not just the “big” animals that are amazing. I once spent a wonderful 30 minutes watching baby porcupines run in circles that I still laugh about. That said, the first time I spotted a lion from the back of an open-air jeep in Kruger, the roar reverberated through my body as though someone had hit a gong next to my ear, and I can feel it in my chest still.

Although every safari drive is different, and animal sightings can never be guaranteed, the Sabi Sand Game Reserve along Kruger’s southwest border is famed for both its luxury lodges and its incredible game viewing with one of the highest densities of wildlife per acre in South Africa. These lodges employ some of the most highly trained guides in their field; working with trackers, you’ll be driven right into the heart of the bush to track wildlife, and on a visit of two or three nights, most guides at private spots around Kruger should be able to track down almost any animal you want to see.

The private safari lodges below are all known as premier spots to see wildlife; to narrow down the list, we spoke with safari experts and combined their advice with personal experience to create this ultimate viewing list below.

Note: Although you may be able to spot rhinos at these camps, these properties are all conservation-oriented and working to protect rhinos from poachers (a full-time endeavor, unfortunately), so those sightings won’t be mentioned here or on the safari lodge’s digital sites. Here are some incredible spots to see wildlife in Kruger National Park:

1. Cheetah Plains, Sabi Sand

Micato Tours has a long history of booking exceptional African safaris; in fact, they’ve won Travel and Leisure’s World’s Best Safari Outfitter award nine times. When I reached out to see where their favorite spots for wildlife viewing in Kruger were, their South Africa specialist didn’t hesitate to say her absolute favorite camp is Cheetah Plains, saying, “It is perfect for those looking for well-imagined luxury and a dedication to solar-powered sustainability.” Adding a note on one of the special parts of the property: A contemporary gallery space, a vivid showcase of some of Africa’s most celebrated artists, one of the personal passions of owner Japie van Niekerk. Eco-luxe Plains Houses accommodations offer spacious private spaces for groups of up to eight people, along with private pools that provide views over a watering hole.

The Wildlife

One unique element of safari drives here is that they utilize Land Cruiser electric safari vehicles, an eco-friendly, zero-emissions offering that not only is part of larger conservation efforts but also delivers near silent, unobtrusive, and smooth travel. Cheetah Plains is known as a prime Big Five viewing for its abundance of leopard, lion, rhino, elephant, buffalo; also here, perhaps not surprisingly, large coalitions of cheetah, plus zebra, giraffe, antelope, and 500 species of birds.

A veranda on the property of Singita Castleton.

2. Castleton, Singita Sabi Sand

Singita is the penultimate destination for both conservation and luxury safaris in Southern and East Africa. The company has 15 properties across several countries. The safari lodges in the Sabi Sand — Ebony and Boulders — were the company’s original locations, and the attention to detail, as well as the ability to spot not just the Big Five but smaller creatures such as birds and reptiles, is beyond compare.

Reminiscent of an African farmhouse, Singita Castleton is designed for exclusive use. Its new light and airy contemporary interiors include six double en-suite cottages that spill onto tree-shaded lawns. This former home of the grandfather of Singita’s Founder, Luke Bailes, combines old-world charm with modern features, including state-of-the-art wellness facilities such as a fitness center, yoga pavilion, and even massage treatment rooms.

Singita Sabi Sand was one of my first safari destinations and is still one of my favorites. It was here that I realized you didn’t have to rush from sighting to sighting (as is the case at some lodges that only want to show you the most “important” animals), but to slow down and enjoy spending time with gorgeous bid life or search out wild dogs and other elusive hunters. Guests of Castleton have their own private field guide and tracker with a private Land Rover for the duration of your stay. You are likely to spot a great variety of wildlife, including leopards . They are elusive creatures, but the Sabi Sand Reserve , in which Singita has a 45,000-acre concession, is very well known for its leopard activity. These cats form an important part of the area’s diversity, with Singita guides and trackers becoming familiar with various resident leopards that have established territory near the Sand River.

3. Saseka Tented Camp, Thornybush Game Reserve

Saseka, another Micato selection, has a setting that’s an African classic: Thornybush Game Reserve, 35,000 sweeping acres of private nature reserve sharing a fenceless border with Kruger National Park. In addition to traditional lodges located in the reserve, Thornybush also offers unique stays at its Saseka Tented Camp , one of the rare luxury tented camp options in Kruger. Each of the spacious tents opens up to its own private deck, swimming pool, and outdoor shower with views of the bush.?

Set on a bend on the Monwana River, Saseka has unimpeded views of the riverbed for unique animal sightings even without going out on a game drive. However, the area is also known for its outstanding Big Five encounters, especially leopard and lion, and for showcasing a wide diversity of wildlife that freely crosses from Thornybush into Kruger and back again.

4. Ulusaba, Sabi Sand

Full disclosure, Ulusaba was the very first safari lodge I visited when I first started writing about Africa 20 years ago. I have a special spot in my heart for Sir Richard Branson’s sumptuous property. I stayed in the main Safari Lodge, where I was enchanted by the swinging rope walkways that connected the treetop chalets under leafy foliage. The other option for overnights here is Rock Lodge, set 800 feet on a rocky hill above the plains, which affords special views of wildlife on the move below. Micato, who also recommends Ulusaba, suggested the newer Cliff Lodge, comprised of two special suites a short walk from the main section of Cliff Lodge for the ultimate in luxurious privacy (this is where Sir Richard stays when he visits).

Known for their storied open-air jeep safaris, guests cap their ultimate Africa trip watching at waterholes for everything from lions and elephants to leopards and giraffes, plus hippos, spotted hyenas, and rare species such as wild dog.

A suite at Lebombo Lodge.

5. Singita Lebombo Villa, Kruger National Park

Singita Kruger National Park is located northern peak of the park, a little off-the-beaten-path from lodges in the southern Sabi Sand. The extra effort to get here is well worth the effort. Staying here feels like you’ve been tucked into an incredible nest of contemporary comforts, with eagle-eye views over the riverine woodlands.

The highlight of lodging here is Singita Lebombo Villa , which is a light, sculptural private villa ensconced under mature trees on the banks of the picturesque N’Wanetsi River. Two spacious two-bedroom suites, each with a private pool, link together to create a spectacular four-bedroom offering with an open plan kitchen and exclusive boma. All views provide a front-row seat to a rich and diverse habitat teeming with game.

The game here is more reclusive than the southern Sabi Sand, but the rewards are worth the effort. Singita Lebombo is especially well known for its lion population, including the large Shishangaan pride. Northern Kruger is also where the fences have been dropped with neighboring Mozambique as part of the creation of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, which means the opportunity to see large herds of elephant, buffalo, and rare antelope species including eland and tsessebe.

The property is very unique from the decor to the staff to the animals. Kruger Gate Hotel is the best hotel to stay at when visiting Kruger National Park. It is close to the entrance of the park and you get an added plus of seeing wild life in their habitat just from your room. The food was excellent. I would highly recommend eating at the resort because there is not much around the hotel. The facilities were clean the staff was very attentive to our needs. Definitely top tear in customer service. hospitality, cleanliness, and accommodating.

Review Hippo Hollow Country estate in Hazyview Spacious accommodation and large walk in shower with double shower heads Elephants roaming on site was awesome and entertaining Only amenities were two swimming pools  Garden chalets facing the pool has no TV, curtains need upgrade, poor lighting Hotel rooms have TV with limited channels Friendly staff Free wifi Delicious breakfast Chalets facing the river have crocodiles and hippos are spotted as well Close to Kruger national park

This is an awesome location from which to explore Kruger national Park. It is just 10 minutes drive from Malelane Gate, which is less crowded than some. The amazing thing is you practically don't need to leave the hotel because the park is right across the river. From the deck of the hotel we saw a rhino grazing right on the shore, elephants, 3 sets of mother with baby hippos, (who've made this spot their little nursery), monkeys, impala, waterbuck, and numerous types of birds.

Laguna Lodge

Our expectations of our stay at Laguna Lodge were more than exceeded. Gerda, the hotel owner, was incredibly accommodating and friendly to us. She booked us a table for both of our evenings in Graskop at two delicious restaurants. She also gave us lots of tips for exploring the Blade River Canyon, our upcoming stay in Kruger National Park and other destinations on our trip. I have never had such a great hotel stay. Many thanks for that.

Linvale Country Lodge

Checking in went very smooth, safe parking, a nice clean room, great swimming pool and a good breakfast (also for our vegan). The hotel with quiet surroundings is a relaxation oasis as well as an excellent starting point to discover the Kruger National Park. We felt very much at home here thanks to the exceptionally kind and welcoming staff. We would highly recommend this lodge to anyone looking to stay in Hazyview.

Mdluli Safari Lodge

We had a wonderful stay at Mdluli! The rooms were exceptional and the staff so friendly and helpful. The room was clean and beyond our expectations. This is truly a luxury tented experince. The property overlooks a watering hole and you can watch animals from the pool area or from your tent. The access into Kruger National Park is amazing. This is a treat hotel for couples or families. And the food was great!

Kruger Park Lodge Unit No 521 with Private Pool

The chalet was extremely spacious and well equipped with all rooms containing much needed AC. We had everything we needed including a private pool which was a nice bonus. A maid also came daily to clean which was a nice touch as well. The grounds were well maintained and we enjoyed walks around the golf course. Overall a good spot to relax and to use as a base for travelling into the Kruger National Park.

We used this hotel as our base for exploring the Kruger National Park. We loved the huge room and huge bed. Since we always got up early we barely saw everything in the daylight, but nonetheless the accommodation was great. The staff was very helpful and friendly, and provided us with breakfast bags for our safaris since we got up in the night. There is also a restaurant on site to have dinner.

Jörn's Gästehaus

Everything! Dream hotel and location. The staff was being nice and accommodating, went above and beyond to make our honeymoon special. The place is gorgeous, well maintained, excellently located. surrounded by nature and just a short drive to shops and restaurants, felt quite safe and happy. perfect place to start coming or going to the Kruger National park and Tschukudu game reserve!

A Traveller's Palm

A Traveller's Palm is ideally located a couple of minutes from the Phalaborwa gate to the Kruger National Park which is a must-see when coming to South Africa. The hosts are lovely, and the place has a pool and a garden which are ideal to relax after a long day of wildlife spotting! Finally, we got lucky and got a room with a super nice "outside" bathroom, lovely!

Jabula Lodge

Our trip to Marloth at Jabula Lodge Restaurant (MPUMALANGA) was brilliant. The hotel was clean, the room comfortable with a view of the bushes, with the possibility to see the animals from your room. The staff were really really friendly and the food was excellent. Frankly we had a great time. Our trip was to visit Kruger National Park nothing to say, just ❤️❤️❤️💯💯💯

The location is great, very close to Kruger National Park(Malelane Gate).

Rukiya Safari Camp

Our stay at the Rukiya safari camp was the highlight of our trip to South Africa. The camp is an awesome place to stay at, and the personnel and guides are exceptionally friendly. We booked the full-day game drive in Kruger national park, and we had a wonderful time there with our excellent field guide.

The location is exceptional with breathtaking mountain views and the grounds are magnificent. The pool area is also impeccably kept and a nice spot to relax and read a book. The mall and shops not far from the Hotel and a big plus for me is that they are very close to the Kruger National Park.

Kruger Park Hostel

Best place to stay for going to Kruger national park. It's a new hostel and everything was really good, comfortable beds, very clean, dinner together, all the staff are welcoming and they spread really good vibes. Plus they organise very affordable half day trips to the national park.

Holiday Flat Stormvoel 547

Kitchen was very well stocked and had everything we needed. Apartment was comfortable and very secure. We had our gated parking and remote for the gate. Very friendly and helpful owner. He provided information for our visits to Kruger National Park and Blyde River Canyon.

The staff were excellent and the food was absolutely delicious, especially the mussel pot. The location is perfect with quick access to the Kruger National Park. The breakfast pack provided by the hotel definitely helped with the drive at the Kruger.

Casterbridge Hollow Boutique Hotel

We had a great time here. Our breakfast was included, but we wanted to leave at 5h00 AM to go to the Kruger National Park so the hotel packed us a great breakfast pack. Will definitely stay here again.

Tswalu, South Africa: the ultimate destination for a luxury safari

Motse accommodation at Tswalu private reserve in South Africa. Photo / Supplied

At Tswalu in South Africa , diamond tycoon Jonathan Oppenheimer has created the kind of luxury safari that most of us can only dream about, writes Catherine McGregor

It was when the mountains caught fire that we started to worry. A summer storm had rolled in over the Korannaberg ranges and lightning was slashing through the vast desert skies, setting the hillside alight before quickly being extinguished by the torrential rain. On the verandah, the clink of ice in our pre-dinner cocktails was being drowned out by the roar of thunder. It was time to go inside.

The summer rains bring life to the Kalahari Desert, the arid sandy savanna that straddles the border of Botswana, Namibia and South Africa. At Tswalu Kalahari reserve in South Africa the rain can transform the parched land literally overnight. The landscape, once barren, is suddenly carpeted by thick tufted grass, spiky gemsbok cucumbers and tiny yellow dubbeltjie (little devil) flowers. For visitors, the odd lightning strike is a small price to pay for such abundance.

The reserve features unique safari camps like Loapi and Tarkuni, each offering maximum privacy with no shared guest areas. Photo / Captcha Creative

Located on the southern edge of the Kalahari, not far from the Botswana border, Tswalu is a truly unique safari experience. The property has been owned since 1999 by the billionaire Oppenheimer family, who once controlled the majority of South Africa’s diamond industry through their controlling stake in De Beers and now use their immense wealth to support their conservation and philanthropic efforts. Tswalu is not only South Africa’s largest private wildlife reserve, but arguably its most remote, at around 10 hours’ drive from either Cape Town or Johannesburg. Isolated and ultra exclusive, Tswalu just might be the ultimate destination safari.

Tswalu Kalahari is South Africa's largest private wildlife reserve, offering an expansive sanctuary nearly twice the size of urban Auckland. Photo / Loapi Images

The distance by road doesn’t bother most guests, since hardly any of them drive. Tswalu has its own private airport and offers a direct charter air service from both Johannesburg or Cape Town. For Tswalu’s mega wealthy clientele, flying in is a no-brainer. That airstrip is a game-changer, says Nigel Pace, Tswalu’s head of hospitality. “Yes, we’re really remote – but in terms of access, we’re actually easier to get to than places like Kruger or Sabi Sands.”

After touchdown, guests are collected by their drivers and depart for one of three luxury camps dotted across the vast reserve. Motse, Tswalu’s original camp, features nine guest suites, or legae (“home” in the local Setswana language) and has the feel of a relaxed-chic boutique hotel. The recently opened Loapi is a collection of six extraordinarily beautiful tented camps , each with a dedicated homathi (house manager) and chef. All six Loapi residences are located at least 100m from each other, with no communal or shared guest areas or services, allowing for an incredibly private stay.

My stay was at Tarkuni, an exclusive-use homestead designed for multi-generational families or parties of friends. Tarkuni accommodates up to 10 guests in five suites, each with their own private verandah, arranged around a living area featuring a spectacular double-height fireplace. Upstairs is a spa treatment suite and games room; out the front is a swimming pool and waterhole where baboons and antelope regularly come to drink.

With a total maximum of 40 guests in an area almost twice the size of urban Auckland , it’s hardly surprising that the word “private” comes up so much at Tswalu. If you’re staying at Loapi and Tarkuni, you can quite easily avoid ever seeing another soul, save for your own small team of staff. On top of that, every booking guarantees you a private 4×4 safari vehicle, including a dedicated guide and tracker, for the duration of your stay. More than anything, it’s this that puts Tswalu a cut above most other luxury safari experiences.

The word “private” comes up so much at Tswalu. Photo / Dook

Having your own vehicle doesn’t only give you privacy – it makes each game drive a totally personalised experience. Want to focus on tracking lesser-known sub-species like the desert black rhino? No problem. Want to stay out all day? Can do. Tswalu’s guides and trackers know the reserve like the back of their hands, and are trained to create for you the most memorable safari experience possible. As your stay continues, your priorities can change, and the value of a private vehicle only increases. With your own vehicle, you’ll never find yourself stuck with day-one newbies who need the safari basics explained or want to stop to photograph every passing kudu – although if that’s something you still want to do, that’s absolutely okay too.

Tswalu's location in the Kalahari Desert means it’s home to rare species such as the desert black rhino and the Kalahari black-maned lion. Photo / Marcus Westberg

A Tswalu safari is as unique as the land itself. The aridity of the Kalahari means you won’t see any elephants or hippos here, and the sheer size of the reserve can sometimes make spotting animals a challenge. Don’t arrive expecting a Kruger-style wildlife buffet, but that doesn’t mean you won’t see plenty of amazing sights, like a lioness and her cubs contentedly chowing down on a zebra carcass at the edge of a water hole. For 10 minutes we sat quietly in our vehicle, snapping photos from just a few metres away, as the desert sun slowly set behind the horizon.

While it isn’t the place to spot the Big 5 around every corner, Tswalu boasts a remarkable number of species that are rarely seen elsewhere. Along with more common species like oryx, wildebeest, cheetah, buffalo, zebra and giraffe, the reserve is a wonderful place to see rare and endangered species including the Kalahari black-maned lion, desert black rhino and African wild dog. Tswalu offers a lucky few the chance to see the Temmick’s pangolin, one of the world’s most elusive mammals; if you get the chance to accompany the resident pangolin scientists on a nocturnal research outing, grab it.

Tswalu is also home to multiple colonies of meerkats, who have become used to human visitors through a painstaking habituating process. These charmingly gregarious creatures are best spotted in the early morning as they leave their burrows for the day, or at dusk, when they return. Like all wild creatures, however, no viewing is ever guaranteed. Despite the best efforts of Tswalu’s tracking team, we sadly didn’t see any meerkats on our visit. It’s a tribute to the power of the Kalahari landscape that our sunrise walk to the burrows, and the Jeep-side breakfast afterwards – magicked seemingly out of thin air by our guide – remains one of my favourite memories of our stay.

Along with preserving wildlife, making memories is what Tswalu is all about. On our drive back to the homestead, our guide told us that bush dining is one of the experiences guests request most often – whether that means a fully hosted braai with butler service and a mobile kitchen for a group, or a secluded gourmet picnic for two (with a staff vehicle positioned nearby, just in case). Other once-in-a-lifetime experiences include a night under the stars in one of Tswalu’s “star beds”, private camps whose level of luxury puts most other glamp-outs to shame.

There’s one special Tswalu experience that towers above all others, and that’s dinner at Klein Jan, the incredible on-site restaurant founded by Michelin-starred South African chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen. It’s the sort of dining experience that relies in part on the element of surprise – so if eating here is on your bucket list, look away now. The magic begins when you pull up outside what appeared to be a ramshackle farmhouse in the middle of nowhere. This is actually the Klein Jan entrance building, where we sat on the stoep, or verandah, and drank cocktails as the thunderstorm rolled in.

Klein Jan, a restaurant founded by Michelin-starred chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen, offers a culinary journey through South African history using local ingredients. Photo / Dook

We were guided through the farmhouse and into a door on the side of what looked like a disused water tank. Suddenly we were descending a staircase wrapped around a waterfall, then led through more jewel-box spaces and into a spectacular glass-walled dining room. While Klein Jan is open to non-guests for lunch – people fly in and out just to spend a few hours eating here – dinner is for Tswalu guests only, and is included with every two-night stay. The tasting menu at Klein Jan is a journey through both South African culinary history and the natural world of the Kalahari, utilising such unfamiliar ingredients (at least to me) as fever berry, xigugu (a traditional corn and peanut paste), kaiings (crackling) and boerbok (South African goat). As we ate, lightning carved through the sky, the landscape fleetingly illuminated before being plunged back into the inky black darkness of a desert night.

The next morning dawned clear and bright, the previous evening’s torrential rain already absorbed by the thirsty red sand. For our last experience, we were going horse riding – a prospect that initially had me slightly anxious, but which, I was assured, was perfectly safe in this part of the reserve. After the exhilaration of the previous few days, a quiet hour on horseback was the ideal end to our stay. With no engine noise or whirr of camera shutters, we could hear the Kalahari’s birds bursting into song in celebration of the rain. Above, the desert sky was enormous and blue; around us, the ochre sand was stippled with summer green. At our dismounting site, the riding guides removed our horses’ saddles and bridles. As we climbed into our Jeep for the last time, the horses set off at a gallop, back across the savannah and towards home.

Why the Best African Safaris are a Mixed bag

In the southeastern corner of Zimbabwe, 50 miles from the border of Mozambique, the scars of cattle ranching and mid-century clear-cutting, a failed war against the tsetse fly, are still legible in the bush. Decades of hard, often Sisyphean conservation work have succeeded in showing the resilience of the savanna's low acacia and fever trees, thorny shrubs, and monumental baobabs. Today, this wild place has a happier problem: an abundance of rhinoceros. Within the 130,000-acre Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve, they are a daily, no-binoculars-needed sight. The lodge here is Singita Pamushana , one of the most superlative in Africa, set high in the jagged exposed rocks above the Malilangwe Dam and its rainwater lake, where hippos bellow and elephants bathe. Comprising only eight house-sized suites with working wood fireplaces and private pools, it's also an exclusive booking that draws in-the-know families back year after year.

Many travel from Europe or the US simply to stay here and enjoy the better-than-you'd-expect wine cellar, central pool, and water views from a mountain lodge surrounded by some of the world's best-managed safari animals. Others come here as a part of a wider trip through Zimbabwe-after a jaunt to Victoria Falls, say.

But, Elizabeth Gordon, CEO of Extraordinary Journeys , a private excursion operator, recommends something a little more gourmet: pairing the yin of Pamushana with the yang of Loapi, a new ultra-luxury safari camp in the Kalahari's Tswalu game reserve (and one of Robb Report's 50 best hotels in the world ).

Opened in July, Laopi's six tented safari homes-each with personal butlers, private chefs, and plunge pools-are set within 281,700 acres of otherworldly desert landscape in South Africa's largest private game reserve.

Not only does the land here give an antithesis to the water and foliage of Pamushana, but so does the game. The big five-even elusive leopards-can be found in Malilangwe. But the desert is for creatures more elusive still: wild dogs, cheetahs, aardvarks, brown hyenas, porcupine, and pangolins. There are desert rhinos here, as well as massive dark-maned lions, leopards, buffalo, and many other familiar safari species-but no elephants. Meerkats are the stars, here. The contradiction is the point.

"Don't be afraid to mix and match," says Gordon, who was born in Kenya. "I'm always looking for places that are unique, more interesting, that aren't a typical hotel. They have to have heart and soul."

Gordon is an expert at creating zebra-stripe safaris: high-contrast adventures with dueling landscapes and experiences. But more than merely emphasizing difference, her philosophy of safari is one all world wanderers can take to heart: "Luxury" alone is too easy, and therefore, less luxurious. You need to "earn it" through discovery.

"You have to try something new because that's what Africa is all about," she says. "To see the ruins of Great Zimbabwe you have to stay at a really simple hotel. Canoeing the Zambezi is not comfortable, but it's exciting. Walking for three days through Lewa with tents and bucket showers is nothing fancy but it is very experiential. Sure, going to a Four Seasons is luxury, but it's easy."

That doesn't mean white-glove service in a five-star hotel isn't your reward-but to create an extraordinary journey, Gordon recommends skipping the Marriott and booking hotels that offer something authentic. There's the resort-style Fairlawns in Johannesburg where every room is unique, or Cape Town's residential urban boutique Cape Cadogan and the art-filled Ellerman House. A four-night sojourn at the jewel-box-sized Clarendon in Bantry Bay is better appreciated between exhilarating game drives in Makanyi Private Game Lodge in Greater Kruger National Park and andBeyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge in Namibia.

Getting to and between the richest private camps and imaginative hotels in Africa offers its own opportunity to turn the worst part of travel into its own highlight.

I traveled from Sydney directly to Johannesburg, thanks to the newly doubled Qantas capacity on the A380 superjumbo on that route since October. It's the first airline to fly that plane between the two commonwealth countries and it's already adding 54,000 seats.

The Australian carrier also recently made that long-haul flight a lot more enjoyable, pouring $100 million into upgrading its network of lounges and adding restaurant-style dining from a menu designed by Australian Chef Neil Perry to its 14 onboard first-class suites.

(Speaking of "long-haul," in 2025 the airline is going to push it to the limit with "Project Sunrise:" an ultra-long-haul direct from Sydney to N.Y.C. designed by a multidisciplinary team of sleep scientists.)

Once you're in Africa and off the jumbo jet, small private charters land on dusty runways directly in or just outside the camp-provided that no zebras are on the runway. Back in Joberg and Cape Town black cars are waiting on the runway to whisk you to urban resorts. Flying so rarely feels joyful but juxtaposition between aviation styles is one way to inject it with comfort and interest.

"When you come from the lush bush and mountains of Zimbabwe to the Kalahari you see less, but what you see is more purposeful," says Gordon. "It makes seeing that cheetah on the top of a dune all the more impressive. Cool adventures are still out there."

I have spent a lot of time exploring best game reserve to go to and I am going round in circles.

What we would like- best immersive experience with nature. We are a family of 4, the kids are 12 and 14 and they love nature. Yes we would like to see the main players, but would also like something a little different.....giraffe's, smaller mammals, birds, etc. To sit on a verandah, in the evening, and watch animals come to a watering hole whilst drinking a moderately priced bottle of Crement ....may give you an idea.

Kruger is appealing because it's so vast- I love the idea of not knowing what you may see.

Many of the lodges are beautiful but so expensive, but I would like something that is mid-range, so not luxury and not basic.... a solid 3-4 star. My husband and I went to Phinda many years ago and LOVED it, but it far too expensive for us now (especially as we are now 4 people).

We also need to think about malaria risk.

We will travel in August 2024

Any help greatly appreciated.

You need to give a budget. What is moderate to one, may not be moderate to another. Your kids are both likely to be charged the adult rate and you will need 2 rooms. Also you may have issues with availability at this point for August of this year.

Thank you. I am thinking around 25-35000 R per night (for 4). Am I delusional ?? :-)

Do you mind tented?

You all happy to share or you want separate rooms?

Do you mind 9 per vehicle?

best safari hotels kruger

I can recommend Naledi Bush Lodge in Balule PGR. Good value, small, (4 rooms), family friendly, owner managed lodge (Kjell Bismeyer). Their Leadwood Suite where we stayed, offers private separate accommodation suitable for family and friends.

It has an expansive private “verandah” deck with a plunge-pool, overlooks your own small waterhole and bush.. Two roomy en suite bedrooms separated by a covered patio and private lounge space. Sleeps 4 +, the rate for 4 pax ppspn is R26,800. Located not far from Hoedspruit town.

Its not delusional to go for nice 4* private safari lodge but it would be mostly toward the upper end of your price range, however, availability is the key issue as these mid-level places get booked well in advance and August is a popular time for many visitors.

If you are wanting to stay in Kruger NP itself, there are a number of private lodges at various price points within your budget such as Rhino Post Safari Lodge,Camp Shawu, Camp Shonga,Shishangeni and Hoyo Hoyo. The link below has detailed information and their own web sites will have the latest tariff rates.

Thank you - I will have a look.

Happy to share and happy with tented. Would prefer less in the drives- thank you!
